Ruin the Friendship
Author’s Note: It’s still November 22nd in the States and I was anxious to get this finished since it is Dacre’s birthday! Just a little something I started a few weeks ago. I highly recommend listening to the song before reading. Hopefully you guys enjoy!
Song Inspiration: Ruin the Friendship by Demi Lovato Pairing: Dacre Montgomery x Reader Word Count: 1,537 Warnings: sexual references, smoking
I glanced up from where I sat when I heard the front door open and close. It was Dacre.
“Hello,” I said as he entered the main room. His cheeks were still flustered and the tips of his hair were still drenched in sweat. He had clearly just gotten back from the gym.
He unzipped his jacket, tossing it on the nearest chair. I went back to minding my own business when he disappeared into the kitchen.
Dacre and I first met at the start of college. We sat next to each other in several classes and effortlessly gravitated to one another. We had been best friends ever since. We moved into a shared house a little over a year ago. He frequently traveled for work which left me with plenty of time to myself.
I sat curled up in a chair opposite the dining room; a fire crackled subtly in the fireplace. I had been working tirelessly on a paper, but now that Dacre was home it would be hard for me to focus. I could hear him shuffling around the kitchen. I set my things aside and made my way to see what he was doing. He placed a now empty cup into the sink before moving in the direction of the laundry room. From the corner of my eye, I saw him reach for the back of his shirt and pull it over his head. A smirk spread across my lips as I fixed myself a glass of water. Dacre was about to be disappointed.
“Hey!” he exclaimed, “You did laundry.” He reappeared, still shirtless because I’d put a kink in his usual routine. Come home, toss his dirty gym clothes in the washer, grab some clean ones from the dryer, and disappear upstairs to shower.
“I always do laundry.”
“HA!” he chuckled, “That’s a lie.”
I laughed as he rounded the corner, “What do you want for dinner?”
He spun on his heels to face me. A grin spread across his face as he walked backwards, his tongue lingering between his teeth. “You know what I like.”
Dacre would shower for at least ten minutes which would give me just enough time to wrap up what I had been working on. I moseyed back to my chair by the fireplace, eager to wrap up this assignment and move on.
Just as I’d planned, Dacre descended his way down the stairs, his hair still wet and only a towel wrapped around his waist. I watched with confusion as he wandered to the kitchen. He was well aware that there wouldn’t be clothes in the dryer like normal, but maybe he knew something I didn’t.
As he passed through the room again, I mentally noted that his hard work in the gym and eating healthy was paying off. I then mentally kicked myself for even thinking of my friend in that manner. Once he finally disappeared upstairs again, I forced myself into the kitchen to cook.
The only lights illuminating the kitchen were the ones above the stove and the glow from my phone. The smell must have finally wafted upstairs because Dacre appeared in the dining room, thankfully clothed this time. He leaned against the wall as a cigar burned brightly between his fingertips. He watched me as I sat on the counter with a grin on his face. To be honest, sometimes it aggravated me when he smoked in the house. But tonight, the deep haze it was creating, was working for me. I shook the underlying thoughts from my head again before sliding off the counter.
“Will you help me decide which suit to wear for the premiere?” he asked.
I wasn’t sure why I hesitated to reply, but I did. I had helped him numerous times before. Why did I feel anxious? “Yeah,” I paused, “Let’s eat first then I’ll come help you.”
Dacre was leaving in two days to be gone for about a week. I sat in the center of his bed, Indian style as he paced around the room packing. He held up two different suits in front of me, alternating between the styles.
“So do you think the navy one?” he held it in front of him before switching, “Or the gray one?”
My eyebrows drew together before I simply shrugged, “Try them on.” His gaze lingered with mine a little longer than I felt it should have.
He effortlessly dropped his athletic shorts and tshirt to the ground. Slipping on his trousers and buttoning up his shirt, I stopped him before he threw on the gray blazer.
“Go ahead and try on the navy one,” I said. He didn’t protest, sliding out of the gray suit and into the navy one. I scooted off the bed as he pushed his arms through the sleeves of the navy blazer.
“Definitely this one,” I said, fixing the collar of his shirt, “It bring out the blue in your eyes.”
The very blue orbs I was speaking of stared down at me. The cigar from earlier had found its way back to his hand and between his lips. My gaze fell, undoing the first button to his blazer. “Only button the bottom one,” my fingers lingered, “It looks more relaxed.”
He was still staring at me when I looked up again. I could smell his smoky breathe he was so close. I quickly pushed past him and headed back downstairs.
When I reappeared about half an hour later, Dacre had cut off the light, leaving the only source of light coming from his bedside lamp and the bathroom. He was rummaging through the cabinet beside the sink. I dropped a bundle of socks in his suitcase. He always seemed to forget those.
“Get too hot for ya?” he asked when as he dropped some items in his suitcase behind me. Puzzled, my eyebrows drew closer before I realized what he was talking about. I looked at him with perplexed disbelief. He grinned, “Don’t act like you haven’t thought about it before too.”
“Too?” I repeated.
He plopped down on the edge of his bed, clearly amused. “I’ve thought about you that way before.”
I crossed my arms in front of my chest. Moving to stand closer in front of him, a smirk playing on the corners of my mouth. “What way?” I asked.
Dacre rolled his eyes, “I’ve thought about crossing the line with you.”
The bottom of his cigar flared up brightly as he inhaled, exhaling in my direction. I was basically standing between his legs by now, my arms still crossed and that darn smirk still on my lips.
“Put down the cigar,” I whispered, “Drop it.”
His gaze was fixed with mine as his hand moved to put it out on his bedside table. Moments later, one of his hands had found my waist and the other cradled my face as his lips crashed into mine. It wasn’t long before his hands made their way under my thighs, hoisting them up to wrap around his waist. He pushed me into the nearest wall, his lips still attacking mine. He tasted of smoke and just a hint of mint. My fingers twisted their way through his hair, our breathing growing heavy.
Dacre only ever made flirtatious remarks at night. It was usually when we caught each other sneaking into the kitchen for a late night snack. The moonlight made him brave. I was anxious to see if he’s still be this brave at sunrise.
I felt a hand lightly shaking me before my eyes shot open. I glanced to the fire burning beside me and then to the figure that had woken me. Dacre looked at me with concern on his face.
“It’s almost midnight,” he said, “I didn’t want to wake you but this chair can’t be comfortable. You should go get in bed.”
“What?” I stood up, stretching a little. My phone read 11:57pm. It was completely dark out now.
“You were going to cook when I went upstairs to go shower, but you passed out a few hours ago.”
I followed him up the stairs, sleep still wanting to take over my body. I leaned against his door frame and continued to be confused. A gray and navy suit hung on the back of his bathroom door, his suitcase only filled with a few trivial items.
“I was dreaming,” I finally realized aloud. My gaze dropped to the ground. I could feel the heat rising in my cheeks. Dacre must have noticed. He chuckled quietly, “What were you dreaming about?”
I hesitated for far too long before shaking my head, “Nothing. Just-“
“Just what?”
He made his way over to me slowly. His arm rested against the frame above my head. He bit his bottom lip, the same smirk I had worn in my dream dressing his lips now. “If I had to take a wild guess, I’ve probably had that dream once or twice too.”
My eyes were fixed on him as he moved in closer. I had a feeling this was going to play out as seamlessly as the hopeful dream my mind had conjured up. And I was perfectly okay with that.
