ways skam/it s2 couldve been good:
i have literally been thinking about this since it finished
cast an actual hijabi as sana - skam it to me felt flat in its storytelling, and casting a white actress as sana shows to me that they didnt really care. how hard wouldve it been to cast an actual hijabi in the role?
nico saying the n word looks like ludovico’s fantasy of being able so say it. and if he writes the script then its likely that he says it outside of his work. as a white man in a first world country he should know not to say it despite english not being his first language.
narrative-wise, i dont think that it makes sense to swap isak and noora’s season around. if julie had done it that way round it wouldve been fine, but s2 builds and evolves eskild’s character, wheras i dont think that we saw enough of filippo to believe the character? eskild acts like a parent/sibling figure to isak and noora. and having elenoora away completely during s3 reduces filippo to this sort of “mysterious character” that gives martino this life changing advice after their third meeting. they dont live together and therefore dont have the relationship that isak and eskild had.
niccolo’s video - it was nice the first time i watched it and shows rocco’s piano skills but it doesnt tell the audience anything about nico’s character. with even and eliott’s videos you get a sense of what their character is like: even enjoys love stories but is a bit erratic; eliott is a romantic and gentle with his interview. nico’s video is 5 minutes long and instrumental. and what julie (and presumably david will do) did was link the video with isak and even’s story: even a filmmaker, says he will make a film about isak, and then also references baz lurhmann, pretty woman and romeo and juliet throughout. you never see nico play the piano once during s2 outside of the video.
the video links to changing their first kiss: isak and evens parallels romeo and juliet (dir. baz luhrmann - even’s favourite director) it also provides us with some pretty heavy symbolism: isak is baptised, he is kissed by god and essentially reborn. nico and martino pays homage to the original and thats about it. theres no film references for a first time viewer to even think of romeo and juliet, nico is not dressed as god and therefore martino is not “reborn.” the closest thing we got was martino throwing his mask away in front of st peter’s basilica, which brings us onto...
a complete lack of roman catholicism! skam it is set in rome, the literal centre of modern-day catholicism, and there’s little to no mention of it. instead they go down the route of natural selection (copying og again, but this time sana’s arguments fall flat) when it wouldve been so much more interesting if martino did a mac finds his pride and came to terms with both his catholicism and his sexuality.
