Years of training (in the kitchen) has paid off. Getting to put his culinary skills to use for a special occasion is an honor. Ideally he'd like things to be as perfect as he could manage. In times like this, they all need the moment of respite, a warm meal with good company to lift their spirits. It simply won't do to let that be ruined by a bad dinner on his part.
