Why Shin's panic attack upon seeing Hiyori's picture on the laptop was 100% genuine
I think I'm stating the obvious by this point but since I'm bored and I still see people who say that he acted like this just because he got a chance to mess up with cards and it was over the top I decided to write something regardless.
Now, messing with cards was defnitely part of the reason why he ran away but I can assure you, that either way his panic and uneaseness at that moment was genuine.
It's obvious if you understand fundamental trait of Shin's and Hiyori's "friendship" where their relationship was toxic and Hiyori traumatised Shin so badly that he is paranoid and has really heavy trust issues. Even if deep down he wants to believe in others he just can’t because of the trauma and experiance he went trough in the past.
He doesn't believe in geniuine kidness of others as he sees it as a weapon to use him and manipulate the weaker. As evidance you can see how he assumes from the start that Sara is kind to Kanna only so she can make her depended on her and use her later. Because in his mind “bad people always feign innocence” just like Hiyori did.
On the other hand his own kidness he sees as his weakness and naivety as that was exactly the reason why he trusted Hiyori in the first place and he suffered terrible consequences because of that later.
So now he does everything he can to never show his "weak" (meaning kind) side again until he wants to get used (or worse killed) like he was in the past. The strong in Shin’s mind are the ones who are smart enough and won’t think twice when it comes to using others, “weaker” people than them. And Shin sees Hiyori as the strong one too - that’s exactly why he imitated him in the first place. So in Shin’s mind it kinda looks like this:
Strong - Feigns innocence, uses kindness as a mean to manipulate others, manipulative, sneaky, is a bad person deep down inside. (Example: Midori and Sara)
Weak - Truly kind, easily trusting, always ends up being used by the “strong” - just like Shin in the past (Example: Shin and Kanna).
The game already implied that Shin was scared of Hiyori in the past. We get to know this because of his AI. And if Shin is still alive, after the talk with his AI his unsettling sprite appears where Shin is silent but you can clearly see he's remembering his trauma he went trough. And memories are affecting him... badly to say at least.
The case is even if Shin says he doesn't care about Hiyori he is still terrified of him just as badly as he was in the past. Even when he tries to act tough and not caring, the game makes it pretty obvious if you pay attention to Shin's behavior.
For example, during cast's first meeting with Midori where he calls for participants and orders them to gather closer to him, it is heavily implied that Shin is the only one who was hesitating to come closer and stayed behind untill Hiyori called him again.
Shin is not only scared of him in the game, but also on Nankidai's sketches. While I know they are not canon, they are giving us the players amazing insight on characters' relationships and personalities.
Do you remember the scene in this AU when Kai rescues Shin from Midori?
Let's bring it back to get a look how exactly it went. All translations below belong to @yttd_wiki on Twitter.
Sketch 1:
Midori: "Shin is so nice..."
Sketch 2:
Kanna: “Sou! What happened! Please answer...!!”
Sketch 3:
Kai: “I am sorry to rain on your festival.”
Sketch 4:
Shin: "...Was there any reason for you to protect me?" Kai: "Even if it's a person like you, I know someone who would be sad if something happened."
Sketch 5:
Midori: "Ahaha...even though I only came here today to enjoy the festival..."
See? Shin is terrified. And he's terrified to the point he’s shaking. Hiyori is supposed to be his "friend" and yet he can't stop shaking in his presence - not only that but he is pretty sure he's going to be attacked along with Kai - he even took some random branch in order to protect himself in case that would be necessery.
When Kai is defeated by Hiyori and everybody finally finds them Midori wants to grab Shin (for whatever reason) but luckily Keiji catches him and Shin backs away.
Sketch:
Keiji: “Hey, quit that... You've been caught red-handed."
And when everything is over Midori leaves saying next time he wants to watch fireworks along with Shin. Shin however is still in shock after what happend seconds ago and doesn't answer.
Sketch:
Midori: "Next time, let's watch it together, Shin... It's a lovely sight to see...” Shin: ...
When Midori finally leaves, all the tension from Shin's body is fading away and when Kanna is asking him what happend he says he's feeling sick and he wants to go home. That's how badly scared he was and how badly that whole event took on his psyche. Not to mention Midori appeared with a KNIFE and we know he’s unpredictible when it comes to hurting others. And I think Shin knows it better than anybody too.
Sketch:
Kanna: “What's wrong...? What happened today, Sou? You look... a little pale..." Shin: "...Urgh... I... I think I feel sick... I'm... going home..."
The only reason he stayed at the festival with others was because Sara was insisting for him to stay. She thanked him for an opportunity he gave them to meet together and begged him to change his mind.
Sketch 1:
Sara: "U... Um...! Thank you very much...! Sou...!"
Sketch 2:
Sara: “Because of you, Sou... everyone got to see each other... and we had a great time! So... please... don't tell me you're leaving...!"
Sketch 3:
Shin: "...That was a lie. You always fall for my tricks.."
He was geniuenly moved by her honesty and decided to cover the whole event and his panic as a "lie" and brushes it off by saying that “Sara always falls for his tricks”. The case is: that reaction wasn't fake by any means and his toughness is an obvious act. Notice how Kanna mentioned how pale Shin is. Besides Shin is not as good actor as he wants to be seen by others. His feelings often break trough his facade - we saw that in game many, many times.
And now back to the picture on the laptop. Now you understand why his panic in that moment was genuine? Seeing Hiyori again was like he was slapped with all bad memories he was unlucky to witness.
And the last reason it got such strong reaction out of him was probably because there was a high possibility he'll be found out that Sou Hiyori isn't his true name or even personality. He wouldn’t be able to cover it as a coinsidence because they even have the same scarf.
In his mind the others will get to know that in reality he isn't that "badass villain" he wants them to see in him but abused, manipulated and used “weakling” with big, soft heart that patheticlly struggles to survive even while having 0% rate. Uncovering his true indetity is for Shin like saying "come and kill me" and he obviously doesn’t want it.
So what I want to say is while trauma with Hiyori is big part of why he had an honest panic attack while looking at his photo, in my mind it wasn't the only reason for that either. But no matter the reason, his reaction was 100% genuine.
