I think the anime actually did have a sort of 'intended roughness' but from the other end of the scale; it's as smooth as a medical room, intended to give a sort of uncanny valleyness to the setting. The washed colour palette, the 'animated live action' they were going for... it doesn't say to me that the CSM anime was cleaning it up just to clean up, but to provide its own take on the series.
but ultimately, i don't think it fits with CSM. The bright neon of the volume covers helps sell the mood better than the bleak dystopia of the anime.
Tumblr media
I don't think the anime looks was a good advertisement for the manga. it looked more like texhnolyze than chainsaw man.
The people getting mad at Bocchi being a moe-esque show for curbstomping CSM's sales record are in for a treat when they find out the All-Time Number 1 first week sales record for TV anime; Uma Musume Season 2 Vol.2 at 150K+ on it's first week release.
The linking factor here being that Bocchi and Uma Musume are both hilarious and well made and not just moe shows.
Going back to CSM, again, it’s been repeated ad nausem but it’s the same shituation as to why Dorohedoro anime and Kengan Ashura anime feel so lackluster: The stylistic roughness is part of the charm that should’ve been incorporated, not a limitation that the anime should’ve strived to correct.
On one hand, yes, intended roughness opens the way to criticism from people that don’t get it’s in fact intended, and is mistaken for actual incompetence, and yes, anime are ultimately ads for the source material in many cases, but that doesn’t mean we can’t push the envelope and try to go with it nonetheless, right? Studios definitely have the talent, skill, and resources to pull off stylistic roughness, so get your feet wet, it’s clearly something people appreciate and can learn to appreciate; Mob Psycho has shown that roughness can be polished and incredible, despite that being a seeming oxymoron. Give it a try.

I think Normal would have a Mr. Mime. I think he would admire its spirit, I think the uncanny valleyness of its body would remind him of a mascot, and I think the stepdad thing is funny. Yet another person to fuck Normal’s mom.
