their souls were pretty tied together, ed passing out after getting impaled and almost dying is why al collapsed when he was walking around with winry and their group - they had to carry his unliving armor with them and just hope that he would eventually come back. If ed had actually died, there’s a good chance al would’ve followed almost immediately after
