Word of Honor Ep 6, and let’s talk a little about what’s canon, and what’s not, and about the particular slip-slidiness of the line between them on this show.
But first, due diligence: If you are NEW or JUST VISITING, this is a re-watch, so you’re going to find SPOILERS not just for this ep, but for the entire show. Scroll away and come back later if you haven’t seen all 36.5 eps and want to watch unspoiled. Also, heads-up, this got super long, because I had to talk about that stuff up there and then still talk about the ep. Hashtag long post (remorseful).
So, “canon,” as applied to fannish source material (in Western fandom, at least) traditionally has been considered the official stuff – the episode, the book, the comic, the movie – based on the religious definition of  “canon,” the collection of texts accepted as genuine and official within a religion. The word “fanon” – widely accepted fannish ideas – plays on this, as does the fandom concept of “word of God,” or things the Creators have said about the text but outside of it. Is it in the show as it aired or the book as it was printed? Canon. Is it not in the show as it aired or the book as it was printed? Not canon. (Apocrypha? Maybe. Anyway.) Generally, I think we’d say that things like material in the first draft of a script that doesn’t make it through revisions and onto the screen isn’t canon, even if you can get your hands on a copy of the first draft. The final product that airs is what’s canon. BUT this gets super slippery in something like WoH, in a way that’s exemplified in this episode. This ep is one of the places where people who can lip-read Chinese have spotted some significant dialogue changes between what the actors say on-screen and what lines have been dubbed in. (Everybody’s dubbed in cdramas, it’s just the thing that happens. You have your on-screen actors, and you have your voice actors. The ONLY person in The Untamed who did his own voice dubbing, for instance, was Ji Li, who played Nie Huaisang. All the other characters had voice actors dubbed in. In fact, the voice actor for Jiang Cheng in The Untamed is the voice actor for Wen Kexing in WoH.) One of the descriptions of WoH that I’ve heard is that this show was filmed as a bl and dubbed as a bromance. The thing is, nobody tried very hard to hide the shift. There are plenty of places that you can clearly see the actor’s mouths don’t match the dubbing, and they’re not artfully shot or edited to hide this. They’re fully on-screen, mouthing words that don’t match, right out in the open, almost like they want to you to pick up on it. Almost like it’s canon, because it’s right there on-screen, aired in the episode. In my first-watch reactions to Eps 36 and 37, I talked a lot about how the dubbing puts a layer of de-queered no-homo over what the on-screen actors are saying in these places, but if you can see what they’re actually saying and understand it, does that make it canon? What does it mean, both textually and meta-textually, if you can’t believe what you’re hearing – what you’re being told – because it contradicts what you’re seeing? How does that affect what we’re told about Our Protagonists and its “truth,” particularly in the final scenes? How much is the show deliberately working against censorship in this way? How much is it teaching us to look deeper than what we’re hearing on the surface?
Several people have talked about what’s actually being said by the on-screen actors in places where this happens, and I’m going to direct you to AvenueX on Youtube if you want a complete overview, because she’s reliable and has a good compilation that’s easy to find. She has a couple of videos called “Lip Reading for Sugar,” and the March 9, 2021, installment includes the Ep 6 incidences, the most significant of which are: At 3:05 in the ep, when WKX throws himself on Zhou Zishu’s back during the zombie Drug Men attack, calls him “mom,” asks ZZS to carry him, and tells “mom” that “your shoulder blades are the most beautiful.” Only no, Gong Jun didn’t say this, if you watch his mouth compared to the sound of the words. Instead of “niang” (mom), he says “Zhou Zishu.” Twice. “Zhou Zishu, carry me.” “Zhou Zishu, your shoulder blades are the most beautiful.” This is not only important because it emphasizes he’s gay for Zhou Zishu’s shoulder blades, but also because he’s fucking baked on Drunk Like A Dream incense when it happens, and later, ZZS will reveal that Drunk Like a Dream makes you see what you most desire, and he’ll confront WKX about how he “kept calling” someone’s name while he was under the influence of it. This makes no sense with the dubbing we get, because with “mom” dubbed over ZZS’s name here, WKX only calls Zhou Zishu’s real name once while he’s under the influence, at the end of ep 5. That is not kept calling. ANYWAY, once WKX clears his head and flies them away from the Drug Men, back to the a lakeside, there’s another disjunct at 5:05, when the dubbing has WKX tell ZZS not to play hero, that he doesn’t lose face if WKX helps him, and ZZS responds with something about your grandmother’s bear, which AvenueX tells me is a real Chinese idiom, although not for what. What Gong Jun and Zhang Zhehan appear to actually have said, though, is that WKX tells ZZS that this was just like a hero saving a beauty, with the implication that ZZS is the beauty, the damsel in distress, and ZZS respons that no, it’s like the beauty saving the hero, without a lick of concern that he’s the beauty, the damsel, in this scenario, just that he did all the work killing Drug Men and now this asshole is going to act like he’s the one who did the saving. At 31:24, dubbing has WKX telling ZZS that he’ll give ZZS whatever he wants if ZZS can get him some of the Drunk Like a Dream, but AvenueX tells me that he actually offers his body in exchange, in a way that implies marriage. And at 32:22, when ZZS asks WKX what he saw under the influence of the Drunk Like a Dream, the dubbing gives us some random story about baby WKX throwing a rat on his mother’s bed, while Gong Jun’s mouth seems to be saying something something about being in the bridal chamber with his beloved … so circling back to our first instance at 3:05, WKX using Zhou ZIshu’s name is now super-interesting, eh?
Another slip-slidey point of canon here is that there are two versions of this episode. The original version didn’t have the rabbit-washing scene. That was an extra that was inserted later into a Special Version ep when Youku reached 2 million subscribers. But the Special Version is now available on Youku’s channel (it’s the one I watched for this re-watch), AND it’s the regular version that’s on Netflix. So at 25:28, we now get this adorable little scene where ZZS and WKX are cleaning two rabbits in the lake before cooking them, and WKX splashes ZZS who pretends to be irritated before splashing WKX back and running away up the riverbank, chased by WKX. It’s flirty and playful and ALSO a foreshadowing of the flashback we’re going to see in a later ep, when they play together for an afternoon as children. Wasn’t canon before. Now it is.
Anyway, even with the (bad) dubbing that we get, this is a fantastic WenZhou ep. We open with them still being menaced by the zombies Drug Men, with a lot of swordwork by ZZS before he starts flagging because of his Nails Issue, whereupon WKX instantly sobers up, goes Evil Ghost Valley Master on Imposter Hanged Ghost who’s controlling the Drug Men, kills him with his Fan of Death, then scoops up ZZS and flies him off to a lake, where he attempts to tenderly check ZZS’s pulse and take care of his wounds before ZZS slaps away his hand like an offended maiden. WKX has to give him the qi smackdown in order to hold him still to :coff: pull down his robes and suck out the poison from the Drug Men scratches on the back of his shoulder. :hands: I remember the first time around, watching this with my mouth hanging open, demanding to know the heterosexual explanation for this. (Also, if you’re rummaging on Youtube, the Five Straight Guys Watching Word of Honor for this ep is not to be missed. They’re a little questionable in their reaction to the poison sucking, but before that, they’re a bunch of squeamish babies over using the dagger to further slice open the wounds to get to the poison, and it’s HILARIOUS. They can’t even look at the screen once the dagger comes out, hiding behind their hands. I love them, more and more as the eps go on, but they are WEAK compared to even the newbiest hurt/comfort fangirl.) There’s some more back and forth between WKX and ZZS about revealing their true selves to each other, no you, no YOU. WKX makes it clear that he knows there’s something really wrong with ZZS, and then they fight, set to romantic music, and ZZS ends up falling in the lake. I do the victory arms (  \o/  ) to myself where I’m sitting on the couch and startle one of the cats, because FINALLY we’re going to get rid of that execrable fake facial hair. ZZS fucks with WKX by staying underwater long enough that WKX panics and also dives in, we get some really cheap and awful underwater effects, and ZZS reveals his face! They end up back on the edge of the lake, drying their perfectly dry outer robes, while they sit around the fire together in their perfectly dry inner robes, but I am not going to complain because y’all. I CANNOT with how smug and pleased ZZS is for just a moment about WKX mooning over how pretty he is. Then he remembers to be an ill-tempered gremlin and pokes at WKX with a flaming stick, but I had to rewind four times just to catch that little moment of satisfaction about being admired again – it’s subtle and gorgeous and Zhang Zhehan is going to kill me with his face one of these days. ZZS demands dinner on this date, and fake-coughs pitifully to get WKX to go hunt something down, while he stays and does his delightful little thinky face as he pokes at the Soul Winding Box they got from Imposter Hanged Ghost. Then we get a shot of WKX looking at ZZS before he heads off to catch some rabbits that confirms he now knows he’s really Zhou Zishu, rather than Zhou Xu.
So, we’ll get back to the Ghost and the Box in a minute, but I do want to mention that this whole ep is layered through with mini-references and thematic stuff. Imposter Hanged Ghost rings his little bell to control his Drug Men, and remember that, we’ll see that again. WKX asks if ZZS came from the Healer’s Valley when ZZS offers him an antidote to the Drug Man poison; we learn later that WKX, himself, is the one who came from the Healer’s Valley. When ZZS gets the Soul Winding Box open and finds a piece of the Glazed Armor inside (Danyang’s, taken off of Ao Laizi by Ghost Valley before he was hung at the gate of Sanbai Manor), he gives it to WKX, tells him to throw it away if he doesn’t want it. WKX says he couldn’t possibly, and that he’ll wear it because it’s his first gift from A-Xu. Compare this to the way Xie’er will wear Awful Yifu’s Glazed Armor around his neck. We also see some of the thematic and referential stuff come up in conversations that form a repeated pattern in this ep of ZZS stressing what a bad and dangerous person he is: He scoffs at the idea he’s from Healer’s Valley, and asks if he looks like someone who practices medicine; WKX responds that he looked like a professional killer (true) who was cruel in the abandoned temple (presumably while escaping Mirror Lake) and frightening to a kind-hearted man like WKX who can’t even kill a chicken (particularly amusing given the prep for New Year’s dinner in a later ep, when WKX is the only one who CAN). At the lakeside and again after ZZS hightails it away from Sanbai Manor when they spot Han Ying there (HAN YING, my beloved), WKX asks if ZZS is a fugitive, what he’s hiding from, and says that he’ll protect him – by reason, because would he kill anyone unreasonably (omg, where to even begin? How many guys have you choked out at this point)? When they’re arguing about ZZS revealing his “true” face, ZZS warns that most people who’ve seen his real appearance are dead (probably true). WKX says he’s not afraid of death (not his own, at least, we’ll see that the thing he’s afraid of is ZZS’s death). ZZS warns WKX that he’s not only sharp-tongued, he’s ruthless (true). He tells WKX that he’s murdered many people (true) and set them on fire (not unlikely, frankly) and committed many crimes (true, in a way, although they were state-sanctioned, making them legal, if morally reprehensible). This is the ZZS who put the Nails in himself, who talks to himself about what a truly awful shixiong he is, who tells Prince Jin that he’s only good as a weapon. I like how we see this at the same time that we’re starting to see the side of him that’ll preen when someone thinks he’s pretty - this is a process, and it’s subtle, not as high-drama as WKX’s, but it’s there, nonetheless.
We also formally meet Xie Wang in this ep, artfully posed and playing his pipa among the bodies – old and new – of Zhao Coffin Home. He and Changing Ghost have a bit of a slapfight over whose fault it is that Imposter Hanged Ghost, who was actually Long-Tongued Ghost, got killed and got his (Danyang’s) Glazed Armor took by WKX, when Changing Ghost stole it from Ao Laizi, put it in the Soul Winding Box and gave it to Long-Tongued Ghost specifically to deliver it to Xie Wang. Xie Wang is super cool through all of this, and I think we get a sense of how deadly he is by the way Changing Ghost backs down. So, here’s what’s falling together: Some iteration of Ghost Valley is working with Xie Wang and the Scorpion Sect, giving the Scorpions access to the Soul Winding Threads, which we saw used at the Mirror Lake massacre and in the woods outside of Sanbai Manor to kill Yu Tianjie in the last ep. Via Xie Wang, Ghost Vally has access to use of the Drug Men, which we’ve seen at the Zhao Coffin Home (so far), although we haven’t yet been told (I think) how Xie Wang got access to the potions to create Drug Men (we also know ZZS read about Drug Men in a book somewhere, and got enough info to engineer an antidote to them). Xie Wang and the Scorpions have access to Drunk Like a Dream incense, which had to come from Prince Jin’s court, having been engineered by ZZS based on a much stronger formulation. Han Ying, from Tian Chuang in Prince Jin’s court, has been seen at Sanbai Manor, Zhao Jing’s place.
Meanwhile Chengling is doing poorly, with no appetite and getting bellowed at some more by Shen Shen, who would be the worst if only I didn’t know everything I know, which makes me cringe when Zhao Jing refers to Chengling as “my son, now.” NO. RUN, Goldbean. For some more thematic and referential stuff in this ep, WKX calls Chengling a “lonely chick with no one to rely on” and tsks over the fact that he’s “surrounded by hounds smarter than foxes” now that he’s under the care of the Five Lakes Alliance. This is clearly to manipulate ZZS into thinking Chengling is better off with ZZS, but it also sounds like an awfully apt description of Zhen Yan in Ghost Valley. I’m just sayin’.

Yeah I'd love those quotes from Nomura/Nojima if you don't mind. There's so much nonsense out there from the other side (CAs) that always end up being completely out of context so I was just wondering what the people in charge have actually said about Cloud/Tifa in regards to the games, AC, and the compilation
Oh man I have 4 anons asking me to post the quotes! Where do I even start???
Ok, reposting these.
–Were there two heroines from the outset?
Nomura: No, originally there was only Aerith, and Tifa was added as another heroine later. To make up for Aerith dying, we needed a heroine who would be by the hero’s side until the end. -WEEKLY FAMITSU ISSUE NO. 1224: TETSUYA NOMURA INTERVIEW
– It’s been 10 years since FFVII was released. I think the reason fans have continued to support it for so long is because it left that much of an impression on them, but what scenes stand out most in your memories as the creators?
Nomura: The scene that sticks out for me is the scene when Tifa going into Cloud’s mental realm and he remembers the truth about what happened in the past.
-The line “Words aren’t the only way to talk someone how you feel,” right? That was quite a mature conversation for a FF game.
Kitase: But I remember having to get another version that was too intense toned down.
Nojima: The original idea was more extreme. The plan was to have Cloud walk out of the Chocobo stable on board the Highwind, followed by Tifa leaving while checking around, but Kitase turned it down. But even with the line in question, maybe at that time none of us thought it would be something so important (laughs).
All of the above are from an interview located in the FF7 10th Anniversary Ultimania
“Inside, I felt one thing was for sure: Cloud and Tifa would be together. Everybody would be back home where they belonged.”-Nojima, Renuion files pg 70.
In Advent Children, the ultimania states that Cloud was happy living with Tifa and the children. Nojima and Nomura go into more detail about this, and why he left even before getting Geostigma.
The more he realizes how happy he is living with Tifa and the children, the more the fear of losing that and regrets toward the past trouble Cloud…-FF7 10th Anniversary Ultimania, pg. 38 (40 in revised edition)
Cloud tried to move on once…but he was hurt by the losses he experienced in the battles he fought in the game story. Even after all of that he still found a peaceful life and that made him scared. He lost it all once already and he could lose it all again. even though he was there he couldn’t do anything to prevent it the last time. So the happier he is, the more lonely he becomes. - Nomura : in Distance, “The making of Advent Children”
-At the end of FFVII, Cloud saved the world and was on the way to a happy ending but, in the two years towards AC, he returned to the way he was in the past. What happened to him?
Nojima: Cloud never had a candid personality to begin with, and although he started living with Tifa and even started working, he obtained a peaceful living he’s never experienced before, and this conversely made him anxious. And in the midst of this he contracts Geostigma himself, and rather than being able to protect the people dear to him, he instead was forced to face his own death, and so ran away -3N interview (The interview was with Nozue, Nojima, and Nomura…hence the name “3N interview”)
Nojima: “Even though he found peace, Cloud has lost a lot of people dear to him up until this point. Not only that, but looking at Cloud’s history, this is the first time he’s experienced a ‘peaceful’ environment in the true sense of the word. Cloud is a character who will always keep thinking, regardless of what’s going on around him.” -3N Interview
Cloud was happy with Tifa, even before he got Geostigma, what was making him nervous was his happiness. He was scared something bad would happen because of all his past trauma. When he got Geostigma, that took the cake.
Some quotes about Tifa.
There are many dimensions to Tifa’s character. She’s like a mother, a sweetheart, and a close ally in battle.- (Nomura) Reunion Files, pg. 19
Tifa is a strong woman. She doesn’t like what Cloud is doing, but instead of lecturing him about every little thing, she’s been waiting for him to realize for himself what his actions are doing. She’s remarkably strong, not only emotionally, but physically as well. I think that using words to help lead Cloud to his own conclusions, instead of constant lecture, is a defining quality of Tifa’s personality.-(Nomura) pg. 20
The director, Nomura, said he wanted me to make sure she wasn’t a clingy woman, but to portray her as though she’s been hurt emotionally in a way that others around her cannot easily detect. (Nojima) pg. 20
The creators saying Tifa is not clingy, she is remarkably strong both emotionally and physically.
Now, let’s look at one more quote from Nomura.
–“What is the relationship between Cloud and Tifa?”
Nomura: “I think that this volume is able to deeply grasp the relationship between the two. It would be simple to say in words, but …” - June 2004 issue (published May of 2004) of Famitsu PS2, on pg. 33 (In regards to AC)
Let’s take a look at what the Ultimania’s have said.
Cloud and Tifa move in together because of their feelings for each other.
The only woman who knows Cloud’s past. In FF7, Tifa is the only one who knows Cloud’s childhood, and furthermore, she holds the key to people involved in the story of Nibelheim’s burning down, which is also depicted in CC. She and Cloud came to realize their feelings for each other in the end of the story, and live together in AC and DC.- Tifa’s Profile, Crisis Core Ultimania, pg. 33
Cloud was happy living with Tifa, and experienced a peace with her he never had before.
(See above quotes)
Cloud left because of his feelings of guilt and Geostigma.
(See above quotes. Here’s some additional quotes)
Now running a delivery business while helping out Tifa with the newly opened “Seventh Heaven” bar, Cloud, Tifa, Marlene and Denzel lived together like a family. However, when Cloud contracts Geostigma he disappears. Behind these actions lies feelings of guilt towards his past failure to protect people who were important to him, but through his battle with Kadaj’s gang, the legacy of Jenova, he regains the courage to face reality.- FF7 10th Anniversary Ultimania,Cloud Strife profile
Because he contracted Geostigma, Cloud left Tifa and the children, and began living in the Slum church. FF7 10th Anniversary Ultimania, Timeline
Because he contracted Geostigma, he left Tifa and the children, and began living in the Slum church. FF7 10th Anniversary Ultimania, Cloud Strife Profile.
When Cloud’s Geostigma and guilt are healed, he returns to living with Tifa and the children (See above quote stating his feelings for Tifa are still constant in DC)
When he awakes, there was his friends. There were the children, freed from their fatal illness. Tifa and Marlene, and Denzel asking for Cloud to heal his Geostigma — his family were waiting. Engulfed in celebration, he realizes where he is meant to live. He realizes that he was able to forgive himself. -FF7 10th Anniversary Ultimania, pg. 131 (133 in revised edition)
With the help of his friends, he defeated Bahamut SIN, which Kadaj’s gang had summoned. He defeated Sephiroth after his Advent, and returned to Tifa and the children.- FF7 10th Anniversary Ultimania, Cloud profile, Cloud’s timeline.
At the end of a long struggle, she gently welcomes back Cloud on his return home after settling things with himself.-Tifa’s Dengeki profile.
I’d say it’s pretty clear what their relationship is.
Now some quotes from Tifa and Cloud’s Japanese voice actors.
“Tifa rarely opens up to show her weaknesses to others - although she does have some. In a sense she’s like a young girl, but she’ll do anything to protect those who are close to her.” -Ayumi Ito, Reunion Files pg. 23
Tifa is an amazing woman - emotionally tough and knows how to fight. -Ayumi Ito, Reunion Files, pg. 23
“I’m a “Tifa” man myself.” -Takahiro Sakurai, Reunion Files, pg. 14
“I did most of my recording alone, but a few times I was able to record with Ayumi Ito, who did Tifa’s voice. I’ve always been a Tifa fan, you know. One of my friends is an Aerith fan, and I’ve actually gotten into an argument with him about who the better woman is. Since she grew up with Cloud, there’s a subtle balance between her outer and inner self, I think Tifa is pretty special. I’m quite the simple man, aren’t I?” - Takahiro Sakurai, Reunion Files, pg. 14
Next, are comments in regards to Kingdom Hearts 2 from Nomura.
—”Speaking of Tifa, there’s an event after beating Sephiroth where she interacts with Cloud.”
Nomura: “In Nojima’s scenario, the connection between Cloud and Tifa was discussed more concretely, but I chose to erase that. I thought it would be more interesting for players to think about it instead. For example, with the meaning that ‘if Sephiroth is Cloud’s darkness, then Tifa is his light,’ one may take the understanding that Tifa isn’t human. It may be because Tifa isn’t human that she doesn’t talk with anyone but Sora’s group. Of course, since she was also presented in a way where she could be seen as a resident of Hollow Bastion like Cid, Aerith and the others, I think one can freely ponder that.” -pg. 724 of the Kingdom Hearts II Ultimania
Tifa As a symbol of light, like Sephiroth, it’s possible that she too was incorporeal. That last scene where she goes off to search for Cloud, you could say, is a metaphor for how Cloud’s light still hasn’t lost him, even though he’s disappeared off with his darkness, and it is trying to shine on him again… I’m pretty sure I didn’t manage to get all that across very well.–Nomura, Kingdom Hearts Character’s report Vol. 2
Phew, that was quite a lot, wasn’t it? And these are just the ones I know about! Imagine the ones I don’t know about!

Marichat Cliches Gone Wrong- #2 Cookies.
(This series will eventually be compiled into one story and put in chronological order, but for right now I am just posting the story snippets)
“Alright, Ladybug told me I was supposed to meet you here, what is this about?” Chat Noir asked warily as he landed on her balcony.
To be fair Marinette was a little shocked that he had come at all, Ladybug’s insistence or no.
“I wanted to apologize. I’m sorry I punched you in the face… again.” She held up the plate of macarons. “These are for you.”
“They aren’t poisoned are they?” Chat asked.
“What!? Why would you think-”
“Relax, I am just messing with you.” He reached out at took a macaron and popped it into his mouth. “Thank you, I appreciate the apology.”
“I mean, to be fair you deserved the first punch.”
“That’s debatable,” Chat glared, gobbling down another macaron.
Marinette sat down at the small table, putting down the plate of cookies and gesturing for Chat to join her. He stowed his baton and gingerly sat down as well. Marinette let out a small sigh of relief at his over all lack of hostility. To be honest she wouldn’t have blamed him at this point if he had just decided that she was back luck personified and decided to write her off all together. And she knew that hidden identity or not, she didn’t want her partner thinking ill of her.
“I really am sorry,” she said as Chat continued to munch of the treats in front of him. “It’s not like I hate you or anything.”
“It’s ok, Marinette. I have it on very good authority that you are a wonderful friend. I won’t let a few punches and an unfortunate near death experience mar my opinion of you.”
“Thank you,” Marinette said trying to look annoyed but unable to resist smiling at his own infectious grin. “Though I don’t think you were in any real danger of dying. Besides I have saved you from akumas before so I think we are even.”
“Hey, if you are going to start keeping score I can name a few times I’ve had to rescue a certain princess with a penchant for trouble.”
“I don’t see what your numerous Chloe rescues have to do with me,” she replied.
“Oh Chloe isn’t a princess, she is a queen. She told me so herself,” Chat retorted, his expression of complete seriousness, and Marinette couldn’t resist laughing.
They sat in silence for a few minutes, enjoying a companionable silence while continuing to devour the plate of macarons.
“These are really good,” Chat said snatching up another green cookie and gobbling it up in a few quick bites. “Did you make them or your dad?”
“My Dad. I don’t have the patience to make macarons all that often. Although I can if I want to.”
“I have no doubt. What flavors are these anyways? I don’t recognize a lot of them.”
“Well its a whole mix. My parents love to offer as much variety as they can, and they will change up flavors almost every week. So…” she examined the remaining cookies and pointed at the different colors, “that’s dragonfruit, lavender creme, apricot, honey and lemon, salted caramel, orange marmalade, black currant, and champagne.”
“What were the green ones?”
“Pistachio.”
“What?” Chat said, his eyes going wide and his face going pale.
“The green ones were pistachio with dark chocolate filling.”
“Oh no. Oh no no no…”
“Chat?”
“Oh this is bad, this is really... “ suddenly he put his hand over his mouth.
“Chat?”
He bolted up from his seat and ran over to one of her potted plants and without any more warning emptied the contents of his stomach into it.”
“Oh my god!”
“Sorry… I’m… oh crap…” Chat moaned dropping down to his knees and curling up on the ground.
“Are you ok?”
“No… allergic to tree nuts,” he moaned.
“Oh, oh god! You aren’t going to go into shock are you?”
“No… not that bad.”
“Will you be ok now that you’ve… uh…gotten it out of your system.”
Chat laughed mirthlessly. “I might need help getting to the nearest restroom. That was just the beginning.”
--
Two hours later Marinette sat helplessly against the side of the bathroom door as she listened to chat continue to moan in agony between round of vomiting.
“I knew you were trying to poison me,” he joked.
“I am sorry,” Marinette groaned for the hundredth time, “I swear I don’t hate you.”
“I know I was just trying to lighten the mood.”
“Okay. I am sorry though.”
“I know, I forgive you. But next time, maybe stick to chocolate chip.”

Stress less, sleep better, and show up every day as the best version of yourself!
A body that is in pain or tense negatively affects our mental capacity.
Ever tried to concentrate with a toothache?
Luckily, the reverse is also true…
With the “Stress Response”, hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol raise the heartrate, quicken the breath and prime the muscles for action. It’s a vital survival mechanism, however long term stress can cause serious damage.
On the other hand, with the “Relaxation Response”…
your heart rate decreases
breathing becomes slower and deeper
blood pressure stabilizes
your muscles relax.
“In addition to its calming physical effects, the relaxation response also increases energy and focus, combats illness, relieves aches and pains, heightens problem-solving abilities, and boosts motivation and productivity.” – Lawrence Robinson
Our bodies are programmed to heal. The magic of healing happens automatically. You don’t need to tell your finger to heal a paper cut. It just does.
However, an overworked mind
interferes with the healing process… especially when it’s thinking about what could go wrong.
When practicing certain mindfulness techniques, the links between different areas of the brain are balanced. The stress response starts to disconnect. Balance is restored.
Mindfulness brings natural order back to the artificial chaos.
Hi, I’m Greg Thurston, and I’d love to share with you a unique method to live your most authentic and fulfilling life.
In just 7 minutes YOU CAN…
Release stress
Gain emotional strength
Nurture stronger relationships
Boost your ability to make great decisions
Be more effective at work and in life
What I’m about to show you is a discovery that appeared in my life after years of struggling with long drawn out meditation.
Years of
trying and failing to meditate consistently.
Let me explain…
I was born with a physical injury that caused constant upheaval in my life. During university I explored yoga and meditation as a way to alleviate my troubles and lift my game.
Over the first 6 months I became
naturally happier
,
my grades improved
,
creativity gushed from my mind
,
my physical pains became tolerable
, and I started loving life.
But there was a problem.
As life got busier, meditation became a struggle… I’d go for a few weeks meditating, then for one reason or another I would stop.
Sometimes it was because “I didn’t have time”, sometimes it was “too difficult to sit and focus”, and sometimes I’d stop without any reason at all…
Meditation was something I just couldn’t stick to consistently, and as a result, I couldn’t reap the rewards.
It was frustrating…
Then one day, sick of the constant ups and downs, I set off to explore the possibilities of what the mind and body can do… And over the next
5 years, the journey took on a life of its own…
I Travelled to Australia, Thailand, Cambodia, Spain, Brazil and Germany… INHALING every ounce of knowledge about meditation, mindfulness, and the mind-body connection.
I investigated TRADITIONAL ZEN PRACTICES and researched what MODERN SCIENCE knows today about the power of the mind.
This world exposed many truths and many falsehoods about stress, mindfulness, and the untapped potential of our brains and bodies… And let me tell you, it was surprising to see how many others were struggling with practices that just didn’t work for them.
The most significant thing I noted is how stress builds up …and when we DON’T release stress we get sick, diseased, and problems begin to push our lives off track.
So I started compiling the best and most powerful methods… focusing on solutions that are
easily maintainable
,
doable for any person
,
enjoyable
, and
avoid the common roadblocks
that people face.
And here’s what I found…
First of all, the honest truth about stress…
Nobody can avoid stress, so right here, right now, you can let yourself off the hook.
You don’t need to reach some fairy-tale level of enlightenment where you live in a bubble and are immune to stress.
What you can do however, is quickly bring yourself back to balance. To approach life proactively. To give yourself the tools to navigate challenges with
confidence
,
dignity
, and
grace
.
Whether it’s financial strains, work, family, relationships, concerns about society, health, or the subtle daily stresses that sneak up on us, these things have the potential to snowball.
They far too often grow into something beyond our control, interfering with our ability to create the life we want and damaging not only our
mental wellbeing
, but also our
physical health.
According to a recent Harvard Medical School research paper, “Stress-related health problems are responsible for up to 80% of visits to the doctor and account for the third highest health care expenditures, behind only heart disease and cancer. But as few as 3% of doctors actually talk to patients about how to reduce stress.”
Researchers found that people in who took part in an
active relaxation program used an average of 43% fewer medical services than they did the previous year, saving on average $2,360 per person.
Of course, these are averages. For some people the costs would be lower, for others unfortunately, the costs would be much higher.
But the truth is, it’s not about the money. If we don’t have our health, we simply can’t function at our peak. We can’t fulfil our potential, we can’t show up for our families and other obligations… our hopes and plans go off course.
So, how can we habitually care for our wellbeing?…
…In the words of one of the most influential martial artists of all time…
– Bruce Lee, actor, director, philosopher, and founder of Jeet Kune Do
When we introduce simplicity, everything changes. We can remove the blockages which create
needless complication
and
limitation.
Maybe it’s anger. Maybe it’s past disappointments which continuously create doubt. Maybe it’s self-criticism which has planted roots in our subconscious mind.
It may be suspicion or wariness about other people, an expectation of failure, or an unshakable feeling of tiredness, frustration, uncertainty, or overwhelm.
The fact is, when you allow yourself to deeply unwind and cultivate mindfulness, complications begin to dissipate… you gain clarity… and you connect with your inner power.
Have you ever had a decision that you just can’t get your head around? Maybe you went for a walk to “clear your head”. Then later, the answer appeared.
It’s like restarting your computer – shutting down the programs that you’re not using any more and
clearing space
.
This should be a ROUTINE. It’s not just about when the situation gets so difficult that you’re forced to remove yourself from the world. When we make mindfulness a core part of our daily routine, it becomes a constant and unlimited source of strength.
And scientists, doctors, psychologists, and policy makers are beginning to take notice…
In Australian schools,
1 million students and 18,000 teachers practice mindfulness every day
in a program run by The Australian Department of Education, Deakin University, child and adolescent psychologists, educators, and resilience specialists.
So far,
68% of participants reported a greater sense of calm
, and teachers have observed “significant improvements in their concentration after participating in the program.”
When you give yourself daily space to
untangle your thoughts and release tension, you’ll approach daily life from a much stronger position.
And here’s the good news…
You don’t need to commit a chunk of your day to sit in long drawn out meditation and force your mind to focus.
You don’t have to hike up the mountains and learn from a monk and you don’t have to understand some special philosophy.
You can do those things if you wish and they each have their own advantages AND disadvantages, but I want to offer you another way…
A way that is
simple
,
fast
, and
doesn’t require any cognitive effort
. A system where you don’t have to “Learn” and where you’re not at the mercy of what a former monk once described to me as “MEDITATION RESISTANCE”.
If you’re curious to see what can happen when you invest in your own wellbeing for just 7 minutes, then please read on…
With 7 Minute Mindfulness, all you need to do is press play.
Let the audios sink you into a deep relaxation like you’ve never known before.
You’ll be guided away from the thought processes of your day. You’ll release the tension from your muscles and the thoughts from your mind.
Different tensions are connected to different parts of our bodies: anger in the jaw, stress in the shoulders and torso, emotions in the hips. You’re going to learn to gently release each.
And the best part is that you don’t need to put in any effort at all.
You don’t need to consciously remember to focus on your thoughts or your breath. You don’t need discipline. Just listen to the music and the words, and they will take care of everything for you.
Each consecutive day you’ll go deeper into relaxation and come out 7 minutes later more refreshed and more prepared to make the most of your day.
You’ll be training your body to be more relaxed, and automatically training your mind to be more mindful.
When you listen to these sessions, here’s what will happen:
You’ll quickly release stress and relax deeply.
You’ll prime your mind with energy, belief, and motivation.
You’ll become more resilient.
You’ll become more patient.
You’ll gain clarity to make brilliant decisions, take opportunities, and be your authentic self.
Although you will only listen to the audio sessions for 7 minutes, the payoff will continue during every moment of your day. You’ll be upgrading your base operating system.
And this isn’t only going to benefit you… NO WAY! It’s going to rub off on the people around you.
They’ll be infected with your energy
.
They’ll take note of your ability to stay calm
, your ability to
make the most of every situation
. You’ll set the positive example.
Don’t just take my word for it…
See the awe-inspiring letter that I read every day… from a Seven Minute Mindfulness user named Phyllis:
“My stress level is near zero for the first time in 63 years.”
“I have inner peace for the first time in my life.
I feel a great deal of gratitude. I feel present. I am so much more relaxed and confident. My stress level is near zero for the first time in 63 years. My internal anger is nearly gone.
I find myself relaxing and going with the flow instead of fighting to control the world. I now know I don’t need or want to do that. I feel at peace with myself.
Thank you Greg!” — Phyllis
I can honestly say that the day I received Phyllis’s email was one of the best days of my life. To see the program improving people’s lives makes the past 10 years so worth the effort.
The core principal of this program is simple: to make mindfulness
easily doable for any person
.
To take away the barriers, stigma, and difficulties that often surround mindfulness practices.
This is NOT going to take you an hour per day, or even 30 minutes. It’s NOT going to require some super human mental discipline. All that’s required of you is to get comfortable, press play, and lie down (or sit if you prefer) for 7 minutes.
It borrows from many spiritual practises, but it’s different. It’s not religious or connected to any spiritual philosophy. It isn’t yoga, it isn’t Buddhism.
There are no strict rules
.
It’s a user friendly, practical routine to give yourself 7 minutes of peace. 7 minutes of nurturing. 7 minutes to release the stress that builds up each day, break the trains of incessant overthinking, and welcome in clarity.
I want you to squeeze every drop of joy out of life. To be fully present and prepared for what comes next, to cherish the small moments and big…
to be creative
,
to be calm
,
to be excited
… to help the people around you, and to nurture that which is unique and special about you.
I believe that if everyone in the world gifted themselves just a few minutes each day to release and rejuvenate, society would thrive.
Want to know more?
Here’s what Jamie reported about his experience…

I am sleeping much better, and feel much more calm and relaxed.

And Robert…
“I found the mindfulness exercises help to get you out of your head and into what is happening presently.
This in turn helps to feel less tense and worried which allows you to enjoy more what you are doing.”

Life Update: Red Wine and Muffin Puppets
I always have such good intentions for this monthly life update post (in fact even writing the first part of this sentence seems very deja vu), but however hard I try to do things in advance I always end up compiling it at the nth hour on the 3rd day of the month. (It has been on the 3rd day of the month since Ted was born; before that it was the 17th of every month, Angelica’s birthday. I have never failed to publish my post before midnight on the right day – I’m borderline superstitious about it now.)
Many people would have thrown out the whole “stick to the same date every month” rule years ago, no doubt finding it ridiculously restrictive and unnecessarily stressful. But I seem to be at my most productive when life is ridiculously restrictive and unnecessarily stressful so go figure – if I didn’t have a set date for my life updates then you probably wouldn’t be reading these very words. I’d just never get around to it, like my cookery videos and the post about sunscreens that’s been languishing in drafts since May 2013.
(By the way, if you want to catch up on all of the life updates – and there are almost four years’ worth now – then you can find them by clicking here and browsing backwards to reach the older posts.)
After that semi-apologetic introduction, which is now pretty much mandatory, let’s get down to business. Or pleasure. Or a mixture of both. I can tell you what hasn’t been a pleasure and that is the twelve days (and counting) of suffering from minor ailments that have been popping up with almost comical regularity. It’s become a standing joke, almost, that every morning brings a new gripe and I can’t tell whether I’m missing some sort of vital nutrient or mineral and need urgent fixing or if this is just what it feels like to get older.
Do I moan and demand that the GP takes my ailments seriously (“but how do you know that my stomach acid isn’t something to do with my eye strain and my running nose and they’re not all related and I have one great big super-illness?”) or do I moan (default setting) and accept that multiple ailments, aches and pains are just an inconvenient way of life. And be grateful that I’m generally well. And alive.
I mean I am always acutely grateful to be alive and not have any serious illness or disease – I’m actually very mindful of checking myself in that respect and reminding myself that every day is an absolute blessing, but by God it’s hard to keep perspective when you can’t breathe through your nose, isn’t it? If there’s one thing that makes me furious with the world it’s a blocked-up nose. Few things are more cruel. Being forced to mouth-breathe through the night, as the inside of your throat dries into something resembling an ancient piece of parchment from Caesar’s journal and then feels as though it’s been set alight, is one of life’s great injustices. Why someone hasn’t invented a sort of irrigation/misting system for the mouth I do not know; a little tube, perhaps, that just spritzes the tongue and throat with water when you have a cold – or better still, a glycerin/honey kind of affair that stops tickly coughs in their path and provides lubrication.
Coming soon on Dragons’ Den.
Anyway, the toothache/headache/stomachache/bottomache/throatache/cough has been exhausting and I would just like a whole week off. To reset. Preferably somewhere hot but not too hot (Greece? Spain?) and with a kids’ club run by Mary Poppins. Or the Greek/Spanish equivalent. Maria Haciendo Estallar. (Google translate has possibly let me down there.)
But enough of me, I must leave some time to talk about Headstrong Ted (two years and four months old) and Pre-Teen Angelica (turning four in a couple of weeks). They are chatting away to one another now, Angelica in perfect, surprisingly crisp English and Ted in his own strange little alien language that likes to elongate vowels and completely miss off the beginning consonants from words. “Ooooo!” is zoo. “Armer!” is farmer. “Iraffe!” is giraffe. But we now have sentences, sort of, or at least the seeds of sentences – the intention’s all there.
“Go! Go! Gaga’s ‘oom! ‘Ide! ‘Olf!” is, obviously, “Go! Go! Angelica’s room! Hide! Wolf!”
Apple is “pull”. Snack is “ack” and baby is “dee dee”. And all of this is monumentally boring to other people so I can’t quite believe I’m writing it. Next I’ll be telling you about the knee operation that my Mum’s brother-in-law’s friend had before Christmas and how he’ll always set off the beeper at the airport. I am turning into the woman I always dreaded, though I haven’t started wearing fleece tops or saving eggshells. Why do people save eggshells? I want to say it’s something to do with slugs but I’ve had a large glass of quite a fine Chianti (no fava beans!) and my brain has gone soft.
Oh but I do have to tell you about my favourite Angelica-isms. Can I? I promise I’ll be quick. She now  understands just about everything so I rarely have to stop to explain – in fact a lot of the time she can tell if I’m oversimplifying things for her and she pulls me up on it. So it makes it even funnier when she gets things wrong. My favourite is this one:
“Mummy I’m going to paint my face but not poke the brush in my eye bulbs.”
Eye bulbs! I think I prefer eyebulbs to eyeballs – I may adopt it. At any rate I can’t bear to correct her because it’s so sweet. She still says coldsnore for coleslaw, and then there’s the one that had me in stitches the other day: Muffin Puppets. Guess what Muffin Puppets are? She was desperate to watch a film we had saved on Amazon Prime and it was about Christmas with the Muffin Puppets. I had absolutely no idea what she was on about. “You know Mummy, the Muffin Puppets at Christmas. With Scrooge.”
She was talking about the Muppets. Muffin Puppets!
If someone doesn’t form a band and call it that I’ll be very upset. Maybe Angelica should form a band – her and Ted are becoming quite the duo when it comes to singing their little ditties and putting on dance performances. Granted, Ted just sort of spins about on the spot and then falls over, but Angelica is full-on Sylvia Young jazz-hand material. She even introduces herself in a (slightly creepy) man’s voice before she begins her show. “Ladies and Gentlemen, my performance is about to begin.”
One of the things that I wanted to write about this month was how intense it was all becoming, looking after two small kids. Sometimes I feel as though we’re on a treadmill and it’s stuck on the highest setting and we just can’t stop running, you can’t even shift your gaze to the control panel to find the slow-down button, let alone reach a hand towards it.  You’re desperate for someone capable to lean over and adjust the speed, give you some breathing space, but it’s relentless. I thought that the newborn phase was hard, and it is, but for such different reasons. Because it’s new, because you don’t sleep, because your brain and body are completely mangled. But then they get older and the guilt becomes a thing, and you have to try and navigate your way through disciplining and educating and trying to instil in them the values and behavioural traits that you find acceptable and it’s a BLOODY MINEFIELD!
Why is there not a course on this? Parenting? I mean for the love of God! You learn about algebra (haven’t needed it once) and you learn how to read maps (hello? Sat nav?!) and you do classes on 1066 at Hastings and the six wives of Henry VIII and all sorts of things that are inarguably interesting; but surely there should be some basic bits and pieces on kids? Like what you should do when you shout at them and they just laugh in your face, or what to do when NO, NO, I SAID NO! doesn’t work, or how to get yourself out of the black hole of doom that is the “using ice cream and treats as bribes for good behaviour” hole.
I’m sure it’s all basic psychology, but it’s the sort of stuff I needed drilled into me from teen years onwards; I don’t have the energy to learn it all now. It needed to be second nature. If I took my eye off the ball for long enough to read up about parenting now, the cat would probably have been shoved into the oven and the walls would be bright green with bits of dried pasta glued all over them. And we’d have no floor, because Ted would have picked the lock on the cupboard with the cleaning products in, managed to mix two highly flammable solutions together and blown a hole in the ground. All in the space of nineteen seconds, which is the time frame in which he can achieve pretty much anything, including climbing two flights of stairs, mounting a window sill ledge and unlatching a window that requires the skill and dexterity of a professional bank robber.
Right, I’m onto my second glass of red which is almost unheard of for me, but it has been a testing kind of week(s). Not that I’m going to make a habit of it – two glasses and I’m a felled woman the following day, I can barely tie my shoelaces. But I have a new book to read and it’s a sort of biography and I feel that it calls for slight tipsiness and perhaps some light weeping. I’m too embarrassed to tell you what the book is at the moment, it’s a daft sort of thing, but I do feel a separate post coming on. I have a weird connection with the woman in question – perhaps it’s a nostalgia thing – so I’m really looking forward to curling up and getting stuck in.
On that mysterious note, I bid you all farewell until later on in the week, which is how long it will take me to recover from my two glasses of wine! So it’s goodnight (or morning, depending on when you’re reading) from me and goodnight from the Muffin Puppets – if you have any funny malapropisms of your own then please do pop them into the comments below. They don’t even have to be kid ones – my parents still call memory foam mattresses the “Tempura Mattress”.

What Parents Need to Know About Early Allergen Introduction (From an Allergist-Mom)
New Post has been published on http://healingawerness.com/news/what-parents-need-to-know-about-early-allergen-introduction-from-an-allergist-mom/
What Parents Need to Know About Early Allergen Introduction (From an Allergist-Mom)
Note from Katie: One in thirteen children in the U.S. suffers from a food allergy. That’s about 2 in every classroom, and rates are rising. I don’t have a lot of firsthand experience with food allergies, so I asked Dr. Katie Marks-Cogan, a board-certified allergist who is also a mom, to weigh in on this important topic. The latest science is evolving at a fast pace and I’m grateful to her for authoring this post on how we as parents can act on the latest food allergy research. While I never thought I’d be recommending a supplement like this for babies, the enormity of the problem and the solid research behind Ready, Set, Food! have thoroughly convinced me. Over to Dr. Katie…
It’s an exciting time to be an allergist because we have a lot of new information about the immune system that has changed the way that we in the medical community think about how to decrease the rate of food allergy development. Specifically, the research shows that rather than delaying introduction of the top allergenic foods (dairy, egg, and peanuts), we should instead introduce these foods early and often to decrease the risk of future food allergy.
I know this finding may surprise many parents who have received the opposite advice. I also know from my experience with my own son how frustrating and time-consuming early and sustained allergen introduction can be.
My hope is that these tips give parents confidence and make it easier for busy families and picky eaters to act on the latest food allergy research.
Why I Now Recommend Early Allergen Introduction
Recent landmark clinical studies have changed the way we think about food allergies in children. Findings from the studies show that feeding babies allergenic foods early and often, starting at 4-11 months of age, can help reduce their risk for developing food allergies by up to 80%.
As a result, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI) have published new guidelines supporting allergen introduction at this early age, which is a paradigm shift from the previous clinical guidelines that recommended allergen avoidance until ages 1-3 years old. In fact, studies show that delaying allergen introduction can actually increase your child’s risk for developing a food allergy.
Introducing allergenic foods to your 4-11 month old can be challenging. As parents, we know that many infants are picky eaters. It can be difficult for us to get our babies to eat enough of any food (let alone enough of each allergenic food). In addition, it can be anxiety-provoking as a parent.
I’ve experienced this firsthand with my son. When he was 5 months old, I spent Sunday nights preparing egg, peanut, and yogurt snacks for him to eat each week. (About 80% of all childhood food allergies consist of milk, peanut, and egg allergy.) However, much of these snacks ended up on his face or on the kitchen floor, and everywhere except in his mouth!
Reducing Food Allergy Risk: What Parents Need to Know
This frustrating experience inspired me to help other parents through the challenges of early and sustained allergen introduction by compiling a brief guide.
1. Consult Your Pediatrician
Discuss the new guidelines at your child’s next well visit, especially if your child has severe eczema. It is currently recommended that parents of infants with severe eczema consult with their pediatrician before feeding their baby allergenic foods, in case baby needs allergy screening first.
2. Choose the Right Time for Your Baby
Choose a time that’s best for baby to introduce allergens.
Pick a time when your baby is healthy and does not have a viral or other illness.
Also, make sure an adult can monitor your baby for two or more hours, in case of a reaction.
Only introduce your baby to one allergenic food at a time. That way, if baby reacts, it’s easier to narrow down the source of a reaction.
Start with a small amount of each allergen, and then slowly increase the amount over time.
After you know that your baby’s immune system tolerates certain foods, you can feed them multiple allergenic foods at once.
3. Start Early, Between 4-11 Months
Scientists believe that infants have a window of opportunity for reducing their risk of developing food allergies in their first year of life, starting at around 4 months of age. During this window, a baby’s immune system develops either positive or negative responses to foods. And consistently feeding babies allergenic foods during this window can promote a positive immune response and reduce the likelihood of a high-risk allergic reaction in the future.
I used a Play-Doh analogy in my Wellness Mama podcast to make the “window” concept easier to understand. I’ll share it again here.
When you’ve got fresh, new Play-Doh, it’s soft and easy to work with. You can mold it into a zoo animal, or whatever you want. If you leave the Play-Doh out of its can, and find it, maybe three days later, it will feel a bit harder. You can try to mold it, but it won’t be easy.
A child’s immune system works almost the same way. Scientists believe that we have the ability to influence a 4-11 month old’s “new” immune system responses to help it become tolerant to an allergenic food. Consistent oral food introduction helps an infant’s immune system build up the needed tolerance. But, like the three-day-old Play-Doh, it becomes more difficult to influence the child’s immune system towards tolerance as they get older.
4. Continue for Several Months
A baby’s immune system needs sustained early introduction to foods in order to develop a positive response to them. Feeding your baby allergen-containing foods like scrambled eggs, peanut butter, or yogurt only once or twice isn’t enough to reduce their risk of developing a food allergy. In the landmark studies, infants consumed allergenic foods 2-7 times a week for 3-6+ months. In fact, the LEAP study consistently introduced infants to allergens for 4 years. So, make sure to feed your baby common allergens multiple times a week, for several months.
5. Breastfeeding Alone Is Not Enough
Breastfeeding provides a wealth of benefits for both you and your child. Breast milk contains the ideal amount of proteins, fats, and vitamins for your baby’s nutritional needs. Plus, the antibodies in breast milk may help baby fight off viruses and bacteria.
If you choose to breastfeed, you’ll pass food proteins to your baby through your breast milk (the amount varies from mom to mom). This means that if you consume allergenic foods during this time, your baby will get some early exposure to allergens.
However, we don’t have enough conclusive evidence to prove that breastfeeding alone can help lower your child’s risk of developing a food allergy. It is currently recommended that breastfeeding mothers should not specifically avoid allergenic foods with hopes that it will protect against food allergy.
New Options for Parents Concerned About Food Allergy
Is it possible for parents to follow the new guidelines on their own? In a word, yes, but it can be difficult. For one, there’s the concern that many infants are not developmentally ready for solid foods at 4-6 months. In addition, they are often picky eaters (as I saw firsthand with my son).
As seen in one of the recent studies, more than 50% of parents weren’t able to stick with the early allergen introduction protocol (so, they didn’t necessarily see a decrease in food allergy). This underlines just how challenging early and sustained allergen introduction can be.
Fortunately, there are new resources available for parents to help with early and sustained allergen introduction. Families with a history of food allergy especially may want to ensure proper early allergen introduction by using a targeted supplement for this purpose.
I believe that the best product should:
Follow the precise dosing used in landmark food allergy studies. Following these guidelines helps make sure baby consumes the right amounts of allergens at age-appropriate times.
Dissolve into breastmilk, formula, or baby food, making it easy to start at 4-11 months, even if your baby is not developmentally ready for solid food.
Slowly increase the allergen amount over time, and introduce one new food at a time, for maximum safety based on study recommendations and pediatric guidelines.
Contain only organic, non-GMO ingredients, with no artificial additives or added sugar.
When I realized that there wasn’t a solution available for parents that met my standards as a physician and mom, I, along with a team of leading experts, sought out to develop Ready, Set, Food!, which is an easy and all-natural solution to help parents reduce their child’s food allergy risk.
After over a year of research and development, we were able to create a gentle, pre-measured powder with minute doses of the top allergens — egg, peanut, and milk — in a system that is easy for parents to follow and implement.
My Mission: Reverse the Trend in Food Allergies
I’m excited to give parents the tools and information to help reduce the risk of food allergies and in turn, give their children a head-start towards an allergy-free future. The science is very robust and promising and my hope is that we can reverse the trends that we’ve seen over the last several decades and reduce the number of children suffering with food allergies.
Dr. Katie and I are ready to tackle your food allergy questions! Please leave a comment and let us know what you’d like us to answer next. To learn more about Ready, Set, Food!, which I really do think is a much-needed resource for parents concerned about this issue, head over to their website to check out all of the research in detail as well as an exclusive offer for Wellness Mama families.

FIVE YEARS LATER….
I’ve been wanting to write a few more long-form things that aren’t specifically about movies. Believe it or not, I don’t like really writing much about myself, but this seemed to be the perfect day to do a bit of oversharing. Warning: If you already feel that you know way too much about me, then feel free to stop reading now. I doubt the people who really need to read this will do so, because few of my colleagues ever read anything I write.
For those unaware, in April 2013 I was diagnosed with a form of leukemia that’s normally found in children and has a relatively low survival rate among adults. I went through chemo to put me in remission and five years ago today I received the stem cell transplant that would save my life and hopefully keep cancer out of my bloodstream. I’ve had a chance to meet my wonderful donor Michael Levin, an Army JAG, and watch his own family grow through Facebook. His selfless choice to be a donor helped me move back to the city I love and go back to doing the things I love doing. To a point…
Tumblr media
I don’t want to be a stick in the mud, especially when I received so much support and love through my treatment five years ago, but anyone who thinks that me returning to New York was the end of the story clearly never dealt with cancer before, either within themselves or with loved ones.
I don’t want to use this post to talk about my “struggles,” because there are people out there who have had it much worse than me, both when dealing with cancer and with life in general. I do want to let people know that being cured of cancer through a stem cell transplant is by no means the end of that story.
You’ll forgive me if I feel a little entitled to overshare after facing such a tough battle and surviving for five years, because life has taken such a dramatic toll on me the past few years, I’m often wondering if beating cancer was even really worth it.
Let me explain…
There are much worse side effects that can occur when one gets a transplant from something called GVHD (graft vs. host disease) because the stem cells, in trying to build a new immune system, literally can turn against the body its inhabiting. There’s a lot of science mumbo jumbo involved with getting a stem cell to take, but it’s a process that leads to a lot of potential side effects and complications. As much as people probably look at me and think I’m back to as normal as I’ll ever get, my year-long fight with leukemia has not left me quite the “man” I used to be, and that’s kind of what I want to talk about here.
It’s hard to believe, but a long time ago, I was a 13-year-old boy with all sorts of dreams and ambitions, but one of them was always to have a family of my own – hopefully a nice wife and at least one or two kids, living in a house somewhere nice. I never had delusions of fame or success of great riches, but I also never thought one day I’d move to New York City and become a writer, because honestly, writing was not even a part of my life until I was midway through my 20s and had already moved to New York City for other reasons.
Imagine being that same boy forty years later, still having similar tastes in music and still enjoying the company of women, but realizing that the fairly reasonable dream I had when I was younger to have my own family will probably never come to pass.
Tumblr media
You see, one thing I learned before I got the stem cell transplant five years ago was that I would be unable to have kids afterwards. I’m not sure if it was due to the radiation or just the general process of having my immune system rebuilt from scratch, but I was told this so late into my cancer treatment that even getting sperm frozen for later wasn’t an option. (I won’t go into the details about how I had to miss a press screening of All Is Lost – how’s that for irony? – to go to a sperm bank only to learn that the chemo so far had already done too much damage.)
But the knowledge that the stem cell transplant that preserved my life has also pretty much sterilized me has made it impossible for me to have any sort of normal sexual relationship, so I don’t even bother trying to date. To be brutally honest, I’ve pretty much lost all interest in sex and have declared myself an avowed asexual having already had many years of celibacy under my belt even before the treatment that would make sex impossibly awkward both for myself and anyone else involved.  So yeah, there’s that, too.
The thing is that I love kids, and I’ve had to live vicariously through my friends who have kids, since I know I’ll never be able to have my own. I’ve grown accustomed to being called “Uncle Ed” even though I only have two actual nephews by blood. Still, this is the kind of thing that can really fuck someone up, and that’s not even the worst thing I’ve had to deal with the last five years.
That isn’t the only issue I’ve faced, as some of you might remember me wearing a bandana covering my eye/face due to the shingles I got in early 2016, almost three years ago, but that’s led to some of the most aggravating pain and irritation of my life, something called postherpetic neuralgia that I’m still desperately trying to deal with. There’s a light at the end of that tunnel, but it keeps drifting further and further away every time I think I have it resolved.
Probably the saddest and most surprising side effect of having cancer is seeing people who I considered friends (or at least work colleagues) before I moved to Ohio for ten months slowly drift out of my life, not because of anything I’ve said or done, but just because…  well, I don’t know why.
Actually, I’ve come up with a theory, as I often do.
I honestly think that many of the people I know were being supportive of me and my fight against cancer, only because they thought I might die. They wanted to be nice to me before what was inevitably my demise… only to learn that you have to be WAY tougher than a little blood cancer to kill Edward Douglas. I can’t even imagine how disappointed they must have been to learn how unkillable I am. Believe me, I’ve tried with very little luck.
Tumblr media
Sure, some of these people just want to improve their own lives and careers, and that weird guy Ed just doesn’t fit into those plans. I can’t really hold that against them, but there’s definitely an “out of sight, out of mind” factor in play for those friends who I don’t see as much anymore. Others have literally turned on me and some have even (purposely or inadvertently) helped get me blacklisted after I worked so hard to build a career writing about movies. I don’t want to mention any names, but it’s hard to see these people at screenings and not immediately be reminded of what shitty fucking people they turned out to be.
It’s kind of shocking to me, because when I got back to New York, I was constantly being asked how I was doing or told I was looking good, the latter being quite uncomfortable for me since I’m not used to getting any praise. It’s something I tried hard not to take for granted that people cared how I was doing, but it also something that confused me, because it wasn’t something I was used to in the years before I was diagnosed with leukemia.
All of the above ties together, though. Maybe I wouldn’t have snapped and called out Disney for their bullshit if I wasn’t dealing with all these other personal issues. Maybe I wouldn’t have gotten in trouble on Twitter last November when I felt the need to vent and did so in a way that goes against my normally conscientious and considerate nature. Who knows? All I know is that I’ve been hurt more by those two bad decisions then anyone else who got involved either directly or tangentially. Disney sure as fuck wasn’t hurt by me complaining about a couple publicists who were treating me poorly, and most people (other than a couple assholes I won’t name) have probably already forgiven and forgotten for what I said on Twitter last year. As I told my editors as it was happening, it was a blip that would quickly be forgotten… and it was.
And yet, it’s hard not to feel like I’ve been completely blacklisted for it, as I haven’t worked in the last five and half months since Tracking Board fell apart. I just don’t know what I can do beside apologize for my behavior (which I’ve done now… MANY times) and continue to offer the hard work, service and loyalty I’ve prided myself on for my entire life.
It’s left me feeling more alone and outcast than ever before on top of all the physical and emotional issues that have built up in the couple years.
I can’t speak for everyone who has fought cancer because every situation is different, but working so hard to come back to NYC, only to find that many of the friends who were so supportive before have basically turned against me, some quite literally, it really, really hurts… and then you compile that with the neuralgia and other physical limitations put on me by my treatment, I hope people can understand when I sometimes get down or just don’t want to talk to people at screenings like I used to.
All I know is that my life is nowhere I would want it to be five years after facing a potentially life-threatening illness and dealing with the after-effects for five years.  I have no idea how to get out of this rut I’m in so that I can enjoy whatever’s left of my life, and I have less and less people that I can talk about any of this stuff.  (My brother, who has been one of my rocks over the past five years, has basically stopped talking to me for reasons I won’t get into.)
I’m not looking for pity or sympathy or even a response/solution, because I just don’t think there is one. I’m just going to try to get by and get through however much time I have left and hope that I don’t end up back in the place I was a few months back when I didn’t even have enough money to buy a bottle of water on a very hot and humid day.
Things are better now, and I’m doing okay, but it definitely seems like the doctor who diagnosed me with leukemia five and a half years ago and told me it would be a “life-changing experience” wasn’t kidding.

Just Another Fool + “Similar Situations”
While I’m on a roll of compiling vintage ARG player comments, here’s a post for the blog that integrated them the most.
August 7, 2009, Dav Flamerock comments:
Hey dude, that looks really familiar and seems to be corresponding with some research I’m doing on the myth of Slender Man. Have you ever heard of him? I have a few other case studies which I can point you to, if you like, which I’m using in my research, but if you wouldn’t mind I’d like to keep an eye on your blog and on Matt’s journal as a possible–nay, probable–source for my research. If you must contact me, the email supplied with this reply should suffice.
Thank you for your time,
~Dav Flamerock
Miskatonic University
August 7, 2009, Logan responds:
Dav,
I apologize in advance, as I don’t think you’ll find much mythy stuff here. Slender man sounds oddly familiar, although I can’t say I know what a slender man is. I’m currently out and about but I’ll check something when I get home later tonight.
August 7, 2009, Dav Flamerock comments:
The inclusion of dreams is suddenly quite interesting. How long have you been having this dream? Do you remember anything more about the voice which said “Now?” Have you been much of a dreamer before this recurring dream?
Most importantly, have you seen a tall slender man clad in a suit with a blank face, in real life?
This may be more important than you think. As before, I can be reached at my.name at gmail.
~Dav Flamerock
Miskatonic University
August 9, 2009, Logan responds:
I’m not sure how often I’ve been having the dream… A few days maybe? I haven’t had it since I wrote about it though, so I guess this pseudo-journaling thing has at least accomplished one thing. I’ve had plenty of dreams in the past, and even some that have been recurring, so I didn’t think this was particularly out of the ordinary. Also, I’m afraid I can’t tell you anything specific about the voice beyond that it doesn’t belong to someone I know. I guess it sounded like a middle aged man? It’s a bit hard to describe a random voice.
There’s been a pretty good lack of slender men clad in suits with blank faces… No worries on that front.
I’m sorry I can’t be more helpful, but feel free to tell me anything you think might be relevant.
Cheers,
Logan
August 11, 2009, Dav Flamerock comments:
I commend Dr. W for putting together the story as he has done so with such limited information from Matt. However, it is *very* curious that you have begun having these dreams after seeing the sketchbook, for obvious reasons. Have you had the dream since we last spoke? I trust you shall blog about it when you do?
I must admit, I am finding Matt’s story difficult to believe. Such a blatant act of hostility and destruction of life is not consistent with the other material I have on the Slender Man, for he has been known to be subtle and very exacting in his victims–certainly not the kind to appear in broad daylight and set fire to half a squad of battle-hardened marines. While the dream coincidence is strange, I must agree with Dr. W’s analysis. Seeing one’s friends blown apart by a suicide bomber is always a traumatizing experience.

August 12, 2009, zebo2g comments:
Just a word of advice, and it MIGHT help with remembering the dream. Some people who have dreams of let’s say, winning the lottery. They enjoy the idea of it that much that some keep a notepad on their bedside table. The moment you wake up, jot down every key point you remember from that dream and report it back here and we’ll see where we can go from there.
Stay safe and be careful
August 12, 2009, zebo2g comments:
Sorry just went over the rest of your entries again, but still keep the notes of every dream and we’ll see what we can get from them. The fixation with this creature shouldn’t be taken lightly. Be careful with how far you pursue this as it could really get to you and end in you going insane. If the dreams get worse, for the sake of yourself, back off from it.
August 13, 2009, Lifegospel comments:
Hello
I am a colleague of Dav Flamerock’s, I have an understanding of dream psycology, more so than most scientists. This recurring dream can be troubling, or it could just be you saw the picture and started dreaming about it.
Either way, I will keep reading this, if you have any questions, I’ll answer them as best as I can.

September 25, 2009, Sven Vikson comments:
Joshua, I must warn you, you need to avoid this “Business man” at all costs, I can’t stress this to you any more. You may also want to avoid Logan’s journal. You are in great danger and if you aren’t careful, you could end up like him.
September 25, 2009, TheNightmareComplex comments:
Once you’ve got those pictures up, my friend, you need to burn it. Please. The cycle can end with you.
September 26, 2009, Morrigan comments:
Don’t let anyone else touch the journal or see the journal, either. Don’t even mention the journal if you haven’t already.
October 4, 2009, Ash comments:
I have a theory… I think whatever this ‘Slender Man’ is, he is a virus of sorts. The notes and drawings that your friend wrote had a horrifying affect on him, and now it’s affecting you, second hand. The same thing to what’s happening to J who’s posting the Marble Hornets videos. His friend Alex seems to have slowly degraded, and now J is showing signs of illness.
This thing is a virus, corrupting whatever it comes near.
October 5, 2009, TheNightmareComplex responds:
Virus aren’t designed to corrupt, I’m afraid, they’re designed to destroy and breed. Their only function if to multiply. I’m afraid Slender Man is more like a Cancer than anything. And that’s far more terrifying.
October 5, 2009, Lifegospel responds:
Cancer causes the immune system to attack itself, while the cancerous cells multiply, I think that as long as we’re on medical metaphors, Slender Man is more autoimmune. The body starts attacking itself, as Matt, Alex and Logan did.
October 5, 2009, Ash responds:
As long as we’re one-upping each other on the medical metaphors… ;)
He’s like the spiritual black death.
October 5, 2009, TheNightmareComplex comments:
Wow, not only is Dr. P.T. Madd a gamejacker, he’s a bad one; His pictures are straight off of Something Awful.
Nice try, jerk.
October 5, 2009, Joshua responds:
What game?
-Joshua
October 5, 2009, Dav Flamerock comments:
You don’t want to know.
Madd, if you really wanted to pass yourself off as real, you would at least do some historical research and remind yourself that Innsmouth was effectively destroyed in police action over sixty years ago.

October 8, 2009, Dav Flamerock comments:
Logan, you mustn’t aggravate yourself. The reward is knowledge, yes–that is why it was sent to you. That did not cause the arrival of the Slender Man, nor did it make him see you. You are not alone. You are not the only one who can see him. If you learn one thing from me, it is this:
There is no why.
Do not let your shell break. Protect your vital heart and your mind.
He is in our world. We are NOT in his. Do not let yourself fall to delirium. Do not give up hope.
~Dav Flamerock
October 18, 2009, Dav Flamerock comments:
A few details have me worried–Logan living on Ash Tree Lane (Yggdrasil), the frightening resemblance of the scratches on the cover to something too dangerous to discuss on these unreliable networks, and the two missing pages being the most important points.
Joshua, you made the right choice to rid yourself of this book.
October 27, 2009, Dav Flamerock comments:
Without going into too much detail;
I must have posted this on my youtube video, not here, but the reason Miskatonic has no web presence is because we work exclusively on Internet-2, so none of our webwork can be accessed on Internet-1 (what we are using now). I think it’s silly to be completely invisible on this network, but the esoteric have their reasons and I’m not exactly in any position to argue. As for why Miskatonic only shows up as a fictional school, such is an unfortunate side effect of the school’s desire to stay obscure. Lovecraft, as you mentioned, went there and wrote about it, and that was the first really public view to the school. As I’m sure you know, the first story sticks, and so now everyone knows it as “that school that Lovecraft wrote about.” Oh well, I’m not going to make a big deal about that either–it actually works rather well for us.
Dr. Upham is not whom I was referencing, I was referencing Dr. Ukrytywicz (and you wondered why I shortened his name). You won’t find him on the internet much, because he’s a bit secretive himself, but perhaps someone knows of him.
I don’t understand why people keep invoking the Marble Hornets entries here, due to their dissociation, but I have no power to stop you from doing so.
Good day, and have a Happy Halloween!

He mentioned he was going to ride his motorcycle to where Logan’s cadaver is being kept, I can only hope that something similar to before hasn’t happened. Joshua if you get the chance to read these comments I recommend continuing to keep in touch with us, it could help take your mind off of things.
I’m a little worried about myself actually, ever since early December I’ve been looking into this Slenderman thing heavily. Been sick since Christmas, everything but the terrible coughing has gone away. Not seen anything strange, yet, though me being far from alone nearly 100% of the time may have something to do with that.
But as we’ve seen from other incidents, SM doesn’t seem to have any trouble toying with people that stick in groups.
March 27, 2010, Zedek comments:
As the curtains close so many from the audience try to hold it open. The Act is done, it is time to sleep and await for a chance to tell our story.
November 18, 2010, Lewis comments:
This is the end of the story. In a few months, it will be a year since anybody has posted on this blog.
Matt is dead.
Logan is dead.
Joshua is dead.
But when one story is over, a new one begins.

I never really met any of these guys, but I understand what it is they were dealing with. After waiting for two years and recieving no updates, I’m giving up on waiting.
For the past couple of years I’ve been compiling some research and I’ve had a few close encounters of my own. I’m not going to just destroy all of the evidence and spend the rest of my life in fear, I’ll find out what happened to these two by myself. If some Monster comes after me, so be it. I’m done with all these disappearances and unsolved mysteries.
I’ll finish this.

“Thank you so much. I honestly do notice that I am more relaxed and calm since I started this practice.
It has helped me physically, emotionally and Spiritually. I am so grateful that I decided to try your method.
I am sleeping much better, and feel much more calm and relaxed.
I am becoming more mindful of my actions and reactions, and feeling more Spiritually healthy. I cannot tell you how much this simple practice has been helping me!! Thank you , Jamie”
And Robert…
“I found the mindfulness exercises help to get you out of your head and into what is happening presently.
This in turn helps to feel less tense and worried which allows you to enjoy more what you are doing.”
You can read more unique experiences later… BUT RIGHT NOW…
Let me introduce you to…

When we introduce simplicity, everything changes. We can remove the blockages which create

This guidebook was co-created by myself and Scott Mason.
Scott’s story is utterly amazing and inspiring – he woke up from a coma after an accident with major internal injuries and a crushed right leg… then went on to recover, rebuild himself, and walk 1000 Kilometres along the South African coastline (prepare to be wowed and inspired!).
In this ebook, you’ll take a deep dive into mindfulness and discover new ways to live an inspiring and full life!
Plus, learn about different areas of your body, such as the
Limbic System
– the part of your brain which controls
emotional responses.
Here’s what one of our members, Greig, had to say about the guidebook:
“I purchased this program about 1 week ago and have listened to each of the 7 daily audios. I found them very relaxing and the perfect length. (I tend to lose focus with a lot of the long-winded material that most people put out!)”
“I decided to start reading the 181 page manual this morning, and WOW – I finished the whole 181 pages in 1 sitting! It really is brilliant and after reading it I know that I will now get big benefits from my daily 7 minute sessions! Thank you thank you for this awesome program!”
