Okay, but like - Ryoko dissociates. A lot.
I didn't realize that's what it is, but whenever she runs into something that's shocking or terrifying or overwhelming, she shuts off and repeats that it has nothing to do with her over and over until it calms her down. Often, it's an intentional sort of numbing herself until she forgets whatever caused the shut off in the first place; once her short term memory loss kicks in and she forgets, she goes back to normal (mostly. ish).
My thing is...if Ryoko is Junko, is this something that Junko also does? Or once did? As Junko separate from Ryoko? As herself? Or is this something unique to Ryoko?
#musings#bandit liveblogs#bandit liveblogs danganronpa#i think i'm honestly more interested and fascinated by the book already knowing that ryoko is junko#because otherwise i wouldn't be as intrigued by all the other stuff going on#and like - maybe it's not dissociation#but it's a trauma response#i do the same thing with overwhelming emotions particularly when i'm in a negative situation#they shut off#and like - if that's the case with junko - that she shuts off under extreme emotional duress and numbs herself out#and she did it often enough that she shut out ALL emotion most of the time#that would explain why despair is her primary emotion and the one that she chases#because it's the one strong enough to cut through the numb#(which - that rings true for ryoko in this case too to some extent#because she's literally refusing to write down the connection between junko and matsuda#she disconnected and shut off and refused to write it down so that she would forget#and like - her love for matsuda normally would cut through that because he's the love of her life most important guy the one she remembers#(literally for adorably cute reasons; she does NOT forget matsuda)#but this time her love for him and desire to protect him doesn't cut through#so even that has its limits#where despair apparently doesn't - not for junko)#AS A CHARACTER STUDY THIS BOOK IS FASCINATING
