16 year old Chuuya who got thrown into the future fresh in his grief of the flags and surrounded my faces who are so similar to the ones he knows but just that much different to make it feel off. And like as of that moment Dazai is one of the only his friends (even if they won’t admit it) alive at the moment. And a Dazai that hasn’t solidified in his partner? before their name of Soukoku?!?! And if it’s safe to assume there will be some agency shenanigans, and agency that hasn’t seen Chuuya with confidence etched into his skin. They will be seeing a Chuuya before he became an executive, a Chuuya who just lost his family for the second time. People who were brutally murdered and Albatross who he held in his arms as he died. And this would be before he processed all this committed by someone who referred to themselves as Chuuya’s brother?!?! Someone who is grappling with their humanity and is still a 16 a child

And 22 Chuuya now faced with people of his past. People who haven’t grown yet Dazai who is a child and a Mori who is still new to the position and Kouyou who hasn’t fully became his sister (I’m speculating a little here/a little headcanon of mine) and Kouyou who is 20. A Kouyou who is know younger than him.

God the potential for angst here. But also the shenanigans that can come from this. Like imagine 22 Chuuya just treating 16 Dazai like the child he is. Like Chuuya is just amused by 16 Dazai. Imagine Chuuya just gives him head pats and completely dismisses the mysterious dangerous aura Dazai tries to portray. He’s just so tiny and like a wet cat.

YES POOR BABY 16Y/O CHUUYA he is probably going to be having the WORST time in this fic i feel so bad bc he is going to be going through it!! fresh out of a fight where he just had so much turned upside down, fresh from his grief of the Flags, and thrown into the chaos without a moment to think. not to share spoilers >> but >> i mean who do we THINK is going to be going to get him when he first arrives in the future 😔 he is going to have to deal with a Dazai who knows more about him than he can even imagine.

and that's to say nothing of 22y/o Dazai himself, who will certainly be facing many dilemmas of his own!! oh i am so excited to play with his character and how he handles the whole situation. suddenly faced with a version of his partner pre-leaving the mafia, who doesn't know the history they have together, who is in the middle of some of the worst moments in his life and Dazai knows all of it. and, worst of all, who is questioning his humanity again!! and a Dazai who has a chance he couldn't take before-

and of course, 22y/o Chuuya facing down the worst moments in his life, now with the knowledge of what is coming, of things he could maybe prevent, but knowing that it's too late for some already. having to face a 16y/o Dazai again, a Dazai who he already trusts but who doesn't trust him quite yet. who doesn't know their history, doesn't know his own future, doesn't know where he'll end up one day. but who is a kid despite it all and Chuuya can appreciate that now in ways he couldn't have at 16. also Chuuya being able to gloat about being an executive to a Dazai who hasn't yet reached that point lmao he will absolutely take any ammunition he has now while he can.

but again, he is also facing Verlaine again, facing people he couldn't save the first time, and facing the question of if he can now, if he could change anything at all, and would he?

and 16y/o Dazai as well! who is now being faced with a Chuuya who is so much more mature, who is so much harder to rile up, and who is carrying weight that Dazai can't yet understand on his shoulders. a Chuuya who, for once, knows everything while Dazai is still trying to piece together the puzzle. and a Chuuya who is the only person to see Dazai for what he is- a child. and the only one to treat him that way. and he has no idea what to do with that, because what can he do?

and then, of course, there is Verlaine suddenly facing an older version of his brother, there is Adam who i am sure will be having the time of his life (<- he will be suffering), Shirase who is also suddenly faced with his friend's ex-friend's future, Detective Murase who will see the kid he was trying to protect grown up and alive despite his circumstances.......

and, of course! the agency facing such a young version of Chuuya, the shenanigans that they will try to pull with him lmao

whenever i have an analysis assignment in lit classes at uni, the first thing i do before i start reading the book is look for spoilers. i straight up search for the whole story and only then i start to read. i do it because, when i'm not concerned with the plot, my eyes can find the mechanisms and literary tools that were used to convey certain emotions and provoke given effects easier. whenever we read something for the first time, we miss a bunch of details since we are (hopefully, if it's a good story) too hooked on what's happening — therefore, if i know what's gonna happen, i can focus on the how.

so... surprise, ryen! i decided to go throught three tangerines once again, to give some much deserved and long overdue love for each and every chapter, trying to focus on the hows, since now i know a bunch of whats.

i must warn you, though, that i won't be able to make whole analysis like i did for forfeit. that review took me around four or five days to write, and i don't have that much time for every chapter. so, i thought of sharing some thoughts, some re-reading insights and just letting you know how each installment made me feel. you've told me how much you return to reblogs to give you inspiration and remind yourself that you're a good writer and i took it as my duty to give you some love to go back to (especially because i realize that, although i pester you like hell in your inbox and in your asks, i've only actually reblogged forfeit, and that won't do).

anyway, i hope you like it! i plan on reading/reviewing a chapter per week, but i don't know if it'll work (i'll let you know tho).

before, i just wanna point out that you credited 3tan as being a birthday present and... god, i wish i was that lucky on my birthday too lol. it's interesting to see it all started with you trying something new, and i'd actually love to know (if you remember) how was your thought process when coming up with three tan. like, did you have a possible plot in mind? did you think of who these character were beyong this interaction, this event in their lives? i lowkey want to interview you lol 👀

aaaaa it's just so freaking nice to be reading this again! i thought after the fifth time it would start to dial down my emotions, but here i am squealing and kicking my blanket just cus of the nostalgia, actually, i feel like knowing what will happen just lowkey enhances the experience.

Yoongi releases one of your nipples with a pop, straightening upward to claim your lips in a toe-curling kiss. When he moves away, he nicks your bottom plush before murmuring, “Oh, doll… You better keep up. ‘Cus this is nothing.”

↪ and urgh i just LOVE how attentive yoongi is. this is the single best kiss description ever if only because it was so important for the reader:

This kiss isn’t like the others before, or like anything you both just did. It effectively calms you and starts to scrape at the hardest pieces of doubt caked on your brain, not relenting until they’re fully dealt with.

EXCERPT & WRITING COMMENTARY

↪ through this chapter, i noticed just how consistently we see yoongi being attracted to confidence.

in sundress season he mentions that what made the reader look so hot then was that she was confident. it was less about the dress per say and more about what it meant her using something that showed her body, that made her feel sexy. the same thing happens in basketball, when she's wearing more risquè clothes and draws so much attention: confidence is so fucking sexy

like, sure, of course he says she's physically attractive too, but time and time again, it's her (developing) confidence that hooks yoongi. like:

Be it the fact that he can’t have you, or the fact that you’re being so bold—whatever it is, he’s already losing this fight.

and:

That’s a much bolder direction than he assumed you were going to take, and a corner of his mouth curves up in pride.

↪ i also love how you are able to reveal aspects of both of their personalities in simple descriptions, like:

You plant your hands on your hips before, as he predicts, you decide that’s not a pose you want to strike if you want to appear more mature. Cute.

you make us see how calculating (read: nervous) the reader is, how this confidence is a perfomance she's doing her best to uphold, at the same time we see how attentive and observant yoongi is.

in that sense, you've always been good with the time to uphold and release information, and you've always done so in the least obvious way possible. you let us see them, and interpret what is happening ourselves, which results in an atmosphere perfectly crafted and in us being 100%, completely and fully inside of it, living it ourselves

↪ i also want to point out that i really love your obvious attention to wording too. repetition is a foreign word to you, and the way you built your sentences is just... so good. is very unique, there's nothing borrowed, there's just ryen

and beyong the intention in your writing, it also feels like i'm being respected and challenged as a reader too, especially since english isn't my first language, and i find myself contantly looking up the dictionary while reading your work. like, one of my favorite, but simplest examples is the way you decide to phrase yoongi being intrigued by the reader (while also telling us he likes to read):

And ever the avid reader, he could sit and read you all day.

↪ and the way you narrate? i just love it SO MUCH omfg, the free indirect speech is so perfectly used, how even in (a weird, kinda second) third person we are inside their heads and just following their thought process, like with yoongi here:

Because he needs to say no. It’s just common courtesy. His friend—your brother—would have his head and his plums if he found out you were even there in a wet white top. Fuck, he can see more than he needs to now. But not as much as he wants to. Goddamn it.

and we can gather so much of their personalities through the pov shifts just from the way he narration flows changes, like with the way the paragraphs during the reader's perspective are lenghtier, which makes us get nervous with her, following anxious antecipations and worries through long thought clouded sentences.

↪ more of a plot commentary, but this chapter alone has so many sex-positivity moments! you boost so much importance in trying to get to know yourself sexually as a way to find confidence, like:

Biting your lip, you obey, stopping your movements to finally rid yourself of your wet clothes. It should feel awkward being watched as you strip but, with Yoongi, you find yourself enjoying the act. Maybe it’s the way he doesn’t hold back from looking where he wants to.

we see how sex can and is a good way to find self confidence too, to feel deserving! but it can only be possible when your partner respects you (and your lack of experience in this case) and cares for your boundaries and well being, like how yoongi is concerned about her enjoyment, and makes her voice her wishes:

When you look at Yoongi again, his lopsided smile springs butterflies in your belly. “Is this new, too?” You nod. “Then do what feels good.” He has his hands planted on either side of him, and you run your gaze along the veins lining them and his arms. “You might like it.”

and damn, sexually 👏🏽 knowing 👏🏽 yourself 👏🏽 is 👏🏽 so 👏🏽 damn 👏🏽 important!:

What matters is how he showed you what to look for in a sexual partner and, dare you say it, a man in general.

FINAL THOUGHTS

i remember there was a 3tan ask that someone asked yoongi and the reader how they felt after the events of this chapter and i remember yoongi saying he waited for regret and guilt to come, but those feelings never did and... damn i just like that so much. how much into it, and drawn to each other they were from the very beginning, especially knowing how much this day meant to yoongi too, how much of a break it was to his numb routine and everything — and it goes without saying how much it wrecked the reader's whole life too.

but... yeah, reading this again feels like such a tight hug. it's amazing to see how much they've overcome, and how much this moment, this chapter was just a spark to their brighter fire.

i'm aware there wasn't much writing commentary, but i feel like my forfeit analysis pretty much covered the first chapter too, and i'll try to compensate it in the next reviews too! hope you liked it ♡
