lrb i agree the iliad is one of the funniest books ive ever read but also their point abt background npcs having their entire backstory explained to us and then dying two pages later is like. the point is that those npcs are people who had lives and families and homes to get back to but because theyre dying in a war (that isnt even their own) they dont get to have those anymore. so no, i dont really think its fair to call those descriptions unnecessary. they add depth and tragedy to smaller characters that you wouldnt glance at twice otherwise
#i think abt the guy agamemnon kills in book 11 a lot. iphidamas#he was enlisted On His Wedding Day. FROM the marriage chamber.#he didnt have a chance to be a husband or spoil his wife with gifts or start a family#he was young when he was called to war#and he died far from home on foreign soil in a war that wasnt even his#if hed simply been a name then i wouldnt think too much of him#i mean hell just think abt all the people achilles kills in book 20. all we're given are names for most of them#do you think about those characters? no probably not. theyre just a tally for his kill count#but the ones who have those descriptions ARE necessary. theyre to help you empathize with the victims of war#many of whom are regular ass people like you and me#the iliad#tagamemnon#slug rambles
