I’m watching Adachi to Shimamura, a yuri miniseries from 2020, and wasn’t really feeling the English dub voices, so I switched over to Japanese and immediately recognized the voice of Miku Itou (Mahiru from Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night) so that settles which language I’m watching this in.

Thoughts and Reaction to SIMPLEMAN

A day late but that's what happens when good subs aren't out until the next day, and you're busy that day. This episode is so sweet and wholesome that it was worth it, for sure. I'm still not sure which one is Ella and which one is Etta. They're always addressed together so I just don't know, but I'd like to. ;-; (Note: Looked it up on Wikia, the one in pink with seafoam earrings is Etta, the one in seafoam and pink earrings is Ella) See Nino knows. Nino's concerned about Marinette babysitting three kids already. He lives with one all the time, times that by 4 and WOO that's crazy. Sweet of her to want to ensure her best friend has some time to relax with her boyfriend. Oh. OH those poor Kwami! Especially Fluff and her ears being pulled like a game of tug-of-war! I can see it now, Fluff now traumatized by young kids. So if Alix ever has any in the future, they better grow up knowing about Fluff right away or she's in for a horror show. PV TRAILER AND MUSIC! I'm such a fan of the music and the PV that when my sister told me about it, it made me even more excited for this episode than I already was. And I was very excited already! Manon: So? Aren't you going to answer it? She knows what's up. So Adrien's calling asking Marinette to help sew on a wing? Because nobody else there can do it? I dunno, sounds kind of sus to me, Adrien. Are you sure you're not using that as an excuse just to see your "friend"?

Marinette's biggest problem is thinking so far ahead in her brain that when she goes to speak, she's either way far ahead of herself or gets everything mixed up as it comes out of her mouth. If she just lived in the moment and didn't plan (which being Ladybug that's probably very hard not to do outside the costume), she'd be able to do this and overcome that fear of rejection as well. She seems to have that part fairly taken care though. When Gina said she was in China to learn Kung Fu and met a girl that reminded her of Marinette, instantly thought about Fei. How could it not be her? Rolland gets asked to babysit, immediately is like "Let's do something fun and dangerous!" Tom must have had an interesting childhood with Rolland and Gina. o.o Clearly Rolland doesn't realize who the heroes are based on. Or just completely forgot he met them when Bakerix. xD Adrien's so sweet with Marinette, even if he can't understand a single thing she says. That's adorable. But a really good way to thank her could've been "Would you stay and watch the photoshoot, and then maybe we could go do something fun/get something to eat after?" BOOM. Problems solved. But I have a feeling this may come back later, and maybe that would turn out better. Marinette's grandparents tend to give Hawk Moth/Shadowmoth the most sass and trouble in comparison to other Parisians. XD Rolland is so sweet to these kids, and they are so caring towards him. It's so wholesome! Just think: if that helicopter wasn't crashing behind her, she would've screamed she loved Adrien. So close. Simpleman is the chillest akuma. Being all "Hey kids, even though I'm akumatized, let's go out into the city!" and the kids are like "Yeah, okay. Hey let's get ice cream!"

Him protecting them from all the flying pizza boxes that guy was throwing around everywhere was super sweet too. LB and CN: Things are complicated. So we should find Shadow Moth directly. Let's run around the city screaming for him to come find us so we can fight him! I seriously think if Chat Noir or Ladybug brought up the fact that their identities made things complicated, they would've revealed themselves right then and there. LOL at the old school fighting and them behaving like young children xD "NO!" "I'm NaNa, ClaCla is no longer with NaNa! Paris is really messy! BuggyBug, KittyKity, help us!" Oh this is going to be so hilarious in the English dub with the voice actress who also voices Nathalie. XDDD A bouncy ball is very complicated for Ladybug. That a literal 5 year old can figure out. Wow this villain's power sure did a number on her. xD I find it all the more stressful actually, that Chat Noir and Ladybug can remember what they were doing the whole time they were affected by the akuma. That means if Marinette said she loved him, or they revealed their identities, there would be no going back or being able to make an excuse for it. Can we just talk about how those kids could understand that the reason he wants things to be simple and is upset that the world is so different, is because it scares him and he doesn't think he's capable of learning and changing with the world? A majority of adults these days can't even take two seconds to try to understand someone else's situation(s) before judging and being outright nasty people towards them. Yet these kids were able to do so. And a lot of kids actually are like they are in real life. Some may see this as an episode just for kids to appreciate, but there's a lot in here that's aimed at adults, too. Adults need reminders and these lessons just as much, if not more so than young kids. It's adults that lose their way and needed to be reminded of it, as they have a greater immediate impact on the world. I've seen so many people judge Rolland, make assumptions about him which is almost always the very worst things they could think of. But this episode shows how caring and willing to learn and understand he really is, he was just hiding behind his fear of change and not being able to keep up with it. Some lessons in this episode for the adult viewers are: -You're never too old to learn, get over your fears, try new things, become a better person, and see things through new eyes. -Don't over-complicate or overthink, but don't be lazy and think keeping everything simple will actually in reality be the answer, sometimes it can make things worse! -Kids tend to see the world as things are, not what they think it should be, or believing they're the center of the universe like adults tend to do. -Being wise means knowing that regardless of your field, educational background, age, or lived experiences, you don't know everything, there is always more for you to learn about everything out there. The kids in this show are quite wise, as they know that there is so much they don't know and how they treat learning new things. They also know how adults tend to understand, or act like they understand everything, so we as adults aren't used to it when we don't and react negatively to that because it scares us when we don't know. In that way, this episode was very brilliant! Also that hug at the end, oh you can bet these kids are going to want to go visit Grandpa Rolland, and honestly I'd love to see bits of them here and there, their bonds are adorable and they've changed his life in such a positive way. Also the pure Ladynoir without another hero or Alya or any kind of upsetting situation was honestly such a breath of fresh air! Maybe not the kind of Ladynoir people wanted, but it made me happy. Marinette acknowledged her problem is she's scared of Adrien rejecting her. First step is admitting it! Can't blame her for not being able to do what she wanted, she only just realized the issue after all. It's going to take a little time now to work on it! Is it just me, or

does it seem Adrien's almost trying not to laugh when she was messing up and then asked if he liked fishing? XD Maybe it was the actors tone with the facial expression but it seemed that way! But the way he just watches her run away and does that adorable little chuckle... Oh Adrien, we really need you to start realizing why you keep doing that. "She (Ladybug) reminds me of your grandmother and you know what? You look exactly like her (Ladybug)." Well. Oop. He's onto you! Apparently Rolland isn't blind, as not a single character suspected her from her personality or appearance to be Ladybug so far. Even Adrien only began piecing it together due to circumstances (and his own personal wish that Marinette is LB, you can't convince me otherwise this isn't true). This is going to come back later, possibly Dearest Family? Overall such a good episode with a lot of things in it, if you decide to watch without high expectations or biases. After all the angst lately, it was certainly needed as a nice change of pace.

This gives her a backstory with Dartz based villainy and recontextualises her relationship with Jou (Joey in the dub, most YGO authors used the JP names to distance themselves from 4Kids’ added cheese). I was on tenterhooks waiting for each new chapter. It’s got real emotional depth, capturing Mai’s cynical nature perfectly. Also I still think about/use the phrase bumblefuck in the morning.

This brings the cast of FE3H to the modern world and drops them into reality TV show The X Factor. There’s no war or death angst, just a singing contest. I grew up with The X Factor on TV on a Saturday night so this was a delight. Like me, the author is cynical about reality TV which makes the fic even more engaging. Ferdinand mourning his long hair after he cuts it and Hubert running round London looking for him really made my day.

The snow storm scene is something I’ll always remember.

When I read this fic I realised yes, Marik being an idiot and Bakura being the straight man (not literally) makes this ship sing.

And excellently foreshadowed earlier in the fic where an imprisoned Hubert keeps asking for his coffee...

Hubert, who has spent the better part of the past few weeks believing he constantly underestimates Ferdinand, bristles.

Not the exact lines but I always keep this in mind when writing the ship. I think these hit on the fundamental misunderstanding between the two characters. Hubert is only human, not some all powerful hero/villain. And Ferdinand isn’t stupid just because he’s honest and emotional. I think the two of them have trouble getting their heads round these concepts!

It’s a dark fic in which Klavier and Apollo are both in abusive relationships with villains. They concoct a plot to implicate the two of them in criminal activities to escape and fall for each other along the way. 

24. A fic that made you feel seen

First of all the title is one of my favourite songs. Second of all the dialogue is everything I want from the Niles/Subaki ship. Third Subaki’s pegasus makes her presence known. Fourth there is a gory battle scene and hurt/comfort gone wrong. And fifth, a happy ending. 

Niles had to turn away, hand pressed to his mouth, before his own blush betrayed him. This was too good to last. This had to be the most embarrassingly vulnerable moment of his entire life, and of course the entirety of the Nohrian and Hoshidan military combined had to be there to see Niles go soft.

A.N.I.M.E.

It’s time for yet another fangirl topic!!! If you haven’t guessed from the title, I’m going to talk about anime in general. I keep trying to explain to my friends and family why anime is so great and why it has consumed my life, but alas anime is not for them. No matter how hard I try to convert them, they won't come to the dark side. SO YAY I’LL TALK ABOUT MY OPINIONS HERE!!!

Let me preface, I’ve only been watching anime for about a year and a half now and I’m completely invested. I’ve been geeky enough to keep a running list of all of the anime that I’ve watched so here it is:

Death Note, Black Butler, K, SAO, Your Lie in April, Fairy Tail, Tokyo Ghoul, Free!, Psycho Pass, Terror in Resonance, Eden of the East, Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash, Guilty Crown, Death Parade, Noragami, Attack on Titan, Brothers Conflict, Steins;Gate, Yuri!!! On Ice, 91 Days, And you never thought there was a girl online?, ReLIFE and Durarara!! (In progress). 

I’m sure that I’ve barely scratched the surface of anime but so far I’ve loved just about every show that I’ve watched (give or take a few) and I’m not stopping anytime soon! I have a subscription to Funimation so that’s where I’m getting all of my shows (and Netflix as well). If it’s not on Funimation or Netflix, then I probably won't be watching it anytime soon (besides Free! which literally destroyed me and I absolutely love it. Totally worth the Crunchyroll free trial.) So, with all that being said, let me dive into my opinions on anime IN GENERAL.  I’ll talk about my opinions on specific shows later, because let me tell you, I have a lot to say.

1. I absolutely love the animation art style that anime uses. Everything about it is absolutely beautiful to me. I’m particularly obsessed with anime eyes and I’m fascinated by how much the style of a character’s eye says about them. I also love all of the fun hairstyles! Let me tell you, I’m really not a fan of the long-haired guy look in real life, but I love how anime guys can flawlessly pull off long hairstyles. Somehow they’re able to have long, gorgeous hair and still be incredibly masculine (I’m looking at you Gai Tsutsugami and Undertaker). Some shows have better art than others, and Your Name has some of the most beautiful art I’ve ever seen, but in general I love the art.

2. I know that I’m in the minority but I am a firm advocate for dubbed anime. Yes I know everyone loves the subs but I have my reasons for liking dubs. In fact, I actually won't watch a show if it’s only subbed (which is why the fact that Final Fantasy: Brotherhood isn’t dubbed is actually killing me). First, because I love the art so much, I want to be able to watch it the entire time instead of having to focus on reading the subtitles just so that I understand what’s going on! Second, I really just hate reading subtitles. They’re just annoying. If I wanted to read, I’d go read a book, but I’ve decided to watch a show so I want to be able to watch it and enjoy it. This leads me to my next point:

3. I really love anime voice actors (also an unpopular opinion). I find them to be incredibly talented and I love hearing them bring the characters to life. Sometimes, I refuse to look at who’s cast in the series before I watch the show so that I can try and pick out familiar voices. TBH, recognizing a voice actor is one of the most satisfying things to me:D I also think the pattern of casting of voice actors says a lot about the character. For the most part, it seems like each voice actor has a specific kind of part that they play (for example one of my favorite voice actors, J. Michael Tatum, tends to play the more high class, educated characters). Once I recognize the voice, I can kind of get a feel for the character before much is even revealed about them. Now, of course, there are always exceptions to this (J. Michael Tatum voiced Barnaby, a quite low class, “brawn of the operation” kind of character in the film The Empire of Corpses, which was totally unusual and showed his range as an actor) and those exceptions are puzzling and fun to figure out. I think I want to talk some more about voice actors in the future because I <3 them.

4. I find anime stories to be much more well crafted than stories from the US. For the most part, I’ve noticed a distinct distance between Japanese anime shows and US television shows. US tv shows are based on the ratings. If the show is popular, it will continue being aired, even if the original story has already been wrapped up. US tv shows will sacrifice the good of the story for giving the viewers what they want. These stories tend to always end happily, or at least bittersweet. If a show ends sadly, viewers tend to get really angry. Then of course, there’s the “deus ex machina” where the writers wrap up an incredibly farfetched story in an over simplistic way, such as “it was all a dream.” AGAIN, there are exceptions to this and there are many many US shows that I love, but this is my general conclusion. On the other hand, Japanese anime shows tend to be focused on the story. Many anime are only one season long, containing only 12 episodes. This is because the story has ended. It doesn't need to be ruined and extended solely for the ratings and the money. If a story is written to end a specific way, the creators of the show will create the show to tell the story and then will move on to a new project. I also commend Japanese storytellers for letting a story end sadly if that’s how the story is supposed to end. Many of the anime I’ve seen have caused me to cry a river of tears. *SPOILER ALERT!!!! IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN TERROR IN RESONANCE AVERT YOUR EYES NOWWWWWW* For example, Terror in Resonance focus on two terrorists, so how do you think the story will end? Of course 12 and 9 have to die in the end, that’s where the story was headed. They could have easily said “oh the viewers love these two characters, how can you not? Let’s save them!” and then let them miraculously live out their lives happily. But they didn’t. And as sad as I was and RIP 12 and 9, I still think the ending was a good one. 

5. I LOVE THE OPENING AND CLOSING THEMES! They’re little pieces of art in themselves! I also love how they tend to change with each story arc or with each season. They’re so beautiful they make me actually want to watch the credits. I will admit, that I jam out to great opening and closing themes when I’m watching a show, no shame. Let me just say, Kuroshitsuji has some KILLER songs.

Let’s see have I missed anything else? Well I guess it there’s anyone reading this if you have any anime recommendations for me that A. Have dubbed episodes, B. Are on Funimation or Netflix and C.
