Order of the Knights-Dragoon (Riven's headcanons)

So I realized that I'd never really put down my headcanons on how I see the Knight-Dragoon order in terms of basic structure. Ergo...

However--I have one major disclaimer warning: I hardcore deviate from the established lore in EE1 regarding the Dragoons' overall numbers and current status. EE1 listed 30 members comprising the order overall, with only ten dragoons in active service quite possibly during HW/post HW. Considering that the Knights-Dragoon are an active military group, I increased the number because quite frankly--trainees, trainers, hell the people who fucking feed and treat wounds--plus i'm sorry what happens if 30 dragoons all eat shitty food at the party and are out with food poisoning the next day?

Anywhoo. My personal ramblings ahead. Also, I'll be splitting this into three parts--Pre-War/Dragonsong War/Post DS War.

UNDER ZHE CUT

PRE-WAR

Established lore that dragons would take knights as riders/fighting partners. This opens up the possibility of multiple operating groups of dragons/knights, and the origins of the dragoon arts on a whole. Haldrath more than likely served as a leader for a proto-Knights Dragoon order (my entire ass rant about Haldrath with excellent commentary from @mariyekos here )

The start of the DS war effectively nukes dragoon/dragoon-knight partnership, and turns the dragoon knights of eld from monster hunters/keepers of the peace into the specialized fighting force we see today. The mantle of Azure Dragoon is created, along with rather nasty specifics of the job--namely that the would-be-Azure must be hearing the voice of the Eye, and that the moment they take it's power, they have effectively given themselves an extremely shorter lifespan.

DRAGONSONG WAR

Over the centuries, the art of the dragoon is refined and perfected. While there's extremely limited lore on just how dragoons are taught and trained (There is a passing mention of a school [somewhere I swear i've seen it I could be wrong however], not to mention Temple Knights who show mastery in the lance can be selected for the specialized training) there's room to say that the Knights-Dragoon operate much in the same way as how their Temple Knight and House solider counterparts do. Knights can take squires, the Order has a specific school (think basic boot camp), and there is general infrastructure to support this particular branch of the military in terms of budget, armorsmiths, cooks, medics, and buildings. The Order generally attracts low to mid-class Ishgardians, as noble families aren't keen to give up precious heirs to the branch of the military with a high death rate even in basic training.

General rankings are

Student/Squire -> Junior Dragoon -> Senior Dragoon

Squireship/Studentship on a whole will run possibly a year or two (or shorter/longer depending on your lore). Senior Dragoons can pick whomever they want as a potential squire from the Temple Knights/Dragoon basic or even right off the streets. If a student/squire survives the brutality that is basic training and the harsher training that is their advanced learning, they can undertake trials to earn their full drachen mail. Once awarded the full set of armor, they are considered junior dragoons.

Junior dragoonship is considered between 1-5 years of service. The more years of service a dragoon gets under their belt, the deadlier they become. By year three a dragoon is considered to be the equivalent of one full squad, year five they're the equivalent of a full platoon. If they particularly distinguish themselves during this five-year span, they are permitted to pick a color for their knighthood and are given a title.

Senior dragoonship is 5 years and over. They are the commanders and captains, and are considered to be the primary pool to choose from when it's time to anoint a new Azure.

Azure Dragoons are the winners of a specific fighting tournament designed to select the next bearer of Nidhogg's Eye (unless the previous Azure has already specifically named a successor. In that case, the tournament is held to select the Azure's 2nd and 3rd in command)

[In this case for my headcanon, Heustienne was 2IC, with Brucemont following behind her. With Estinien and Heustienne gone, Brucemont effectively was promoted to overall leader.]

POST-DS WAR

While not much has changed with the original structure of the Order, the peace between Ishgardian and dragon means that once again, there are dragon-riders. The knights themselves are learning to adjust their fighting tactics once more for dealing with monster attacks instead of fighting solo, along with learning how to ride and engage in combat on dragon-back. The selection process has become even more strict--with hopefuls not only needing to survive basic camp, but then learn dragon husbandry--how to take care of an ill dragon, how to feed one, care when they're pregnant--even cleaning dragon aeries and doing whatever gruntwork they're asked to perform.

Should a squire pass all this, their final trial will be to clear Sohr Khai--under the watchful eyes of the Dravanians. A dragon will select the squire to be the recipient of willing blood and scales for the drachen mail--in addition to being their flight-partner.

This snippet is from the start of a fic that is easily the most chock full of lemons I've ever done in a piece of shared writing, and given at least one of the fics I have posted on AO3 that's saying something. And yes I swear this is from a (fully, enthusiastically consensual) lemon fic - let's just say Zevran and Revka take their roleplay very seriously.

I mean. VERY seriously.

There was no way to be certain how long he had been left here. An hour, perhaps slightly less? Long enough for the flagstones beneath him to become quite uncomfortable, their hard edges biting into the flesh of his knees regardless however he shifted his weight. His arms had taken to adding to the protest as well, a dull ache slowly spreading out from the muscles of his shoulders while the shackles pinning them behind his back dug at the skin of his wrists, a reprimand at any attempt made at finding relief. 

Somewhere outside the boundaries of Zevran’s makeshift prison came a clink of metal fastenings. Faint, muffled through the mortar and dense wood, but unmistakably there. It sent a jolt lancing through him, pins and needles pricking down his nerves as his head turned involuntarily toward the noise. A bead of cold sweat slipped from his brow, catching in the rough linen blind about his eyes. His breath fell silent in his chest, held in irons of its own while his ears strained for the slightest sound and anticipation carried on with its slow, inescapable churn in his gut. 

This lingering had been far more extensive than anticipated, as well as his captor’s delight in allowing him to wallow here. But his pride was stronger than their will, and he would be damned before he was the one to surrender to time. He’d endured far worse than his own imaginings of what was still to come, and what waited for him beyond this cell was not a matter of if, but when. Surely it couldn’t be much longer now.

I want to preface this by saying that while I do not make exclusively 18+ content, I am an adult who writes from an adult perspective and with an adult life experience. And well, this is DC, not Marvel, you know the gig. I also often slip violence and trauma as omnipresent themes and don’t always present them in a healthy, coping way. About the MC/reader:

My default setting is female reader because that's what I'm most comfortable working with. However, I am definitely not closed to writing in male or non binary perspective, you just gotta ask :)

I usually never mention any specific body type, unless I'm writing vigilante!reader, in that case reader comes with a certain amount of muscles because you need those to be a vigilante. 

I try to be inclusive as well as much as possible by not mentioning skin color, hair type, eye and hair colors, avoiding the "red blushing cheeks" cliché, etc. However I am aware there are social and cultural cues I might subconsciously use that will not necessarily match yours, I'm trying to keep an eye on that as well.

NO posting schedule. I have to write during a Creative Episode otherwise it'll suck. And I don't control the Creative Episodes, so it can go anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks. Sorry about that.

I don’t do tags because I couln’t keep track of them if my life depended on it, also half of the time the tags either don’t work or the blogs are on private mode. ONLY EXCEPTION is when a fic is requested off anon, then I tag the person who requested it 💕

I really hate that about myself but that's the way I am; I'm very validation driven so the more you interact the more I'll be motivated to put stuff out. I stopped writing for marvel altogether because I ended up with like 21 notes no reblog no comment, so that drove my motivation to the grave. This isn't a guilt trip I swear, but I really do appreciate a little "loved this!" in the comments or a personalized tag on a reblog. This is literally the recipe to get me to post more stuff more frequently, that simple. 

I am an adult, as stated previously. Unless it's for a platonic or family relationship, I am not comfortable writing about characters who are under 17-18 years old (outside of flashbacks).

English is not my first language. I might confuse or misuse words, or lose some stuff in translation. Also if my sentence structures seem weird sometimes, now you know why. Lmao sorry about that

Naked Madlions Update #1!

Welcome all to the exciting adventure that is the Naked Madlions, my Maddening playthrough of Blue Lions without New Game+! (All updates are going to be tagged with #Molly's Madlions) As a warning, I've played all 4 routes and as this is a playthrough, it gets pretty spoiler-heavy. I might, and have in previous posts, talk about plot elements, comparisons, and other details.

Basically, spoiler warning for potentially all of FE3H, but most specifically Blue Lions.

With that out of the way, here's how it's going!

Prologue:

GUYS I FAILED THE FUCKING PROLOGUE AHAHAHA. We stole Claude and Edelgards' weapons and shoved them behind a wall to keep them out of danger. I put Dimitri in a bush and said, "yeah, he's sufficiently tanky, he can--" and then he took one hit, and he was okay, and then he took the second hit, and then he wasn't okay. And I thought, "oh, I'll Divine Pul--oh...right." Anyay, I've now seen what the Game Over screen looks like.

With more liberal healing and less aggressive tactics, we succeeded. :P

Mock Battle:

Battle requires Byleth and Dimitri, and I took Dedue, Mercedes, and Ingrid for other slots. Dedue has a swell personal ability which makes him excellent at taking physical hits. Mercie I took because she was the only one who could heal. Ingrid I was really on the fence about, as my past experiences with her have not been the best, but I picked her for her Res, which came really in handy this battle. I made sure to stock up on as many weapons as I could, and I equipped everyone with 2 vulneraries. It did take several restarts to find the right combination of actions, and I admit that Mercedes went down, but because this is like, one of two battles that aren't permadeath, I just left her down. She was out of heals anyway, and we were close to winning. Her survival is, of course, more important to me moving forward. Even so, it took 26 turns (and several swears) to complete three mock battle. Bleh.

"HEY, KOSTAS, REMEMBER US?":

Oh, my Divine Pulses! *cries in joy* oh...there's...only 3 of them. Okay. Cool. I'm used to like...10, but this...this is fine.

This is a tough fight to start out with, because most of these dumb babies are still level 1. No one got to 5 from the practice battle because, like a dingus, I split my exp a little more evenly before thinking about what might happen next. Plus, those Poison Touch Archers are AGGRESSIVE. All the Swordbois have Pass, so we had to watch our backs to make sure no one was sneaking behind us to stab the squishier ones. Most of the battle, we kept to the initial bridge and let the enemies come to us. The bridge gives a nice choke point to control enemy movement. Much to my own surprise, we kept everyone alive and didn't need to use any Divine Pulses (oh me of little faith). As long as you're mindful of archer range, it's workable.

Mutiny in the Mist:

CATHERINE IS AN EXP THIEF. WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?

*ahem*

Fog...sucks. About half the army had torches ready, and we only lost of one of our allied soldiers (because he ran himself through an enemy weapon. I cannot help you, sir), so not too bad! About midway through the map, I used a Pulse to pull Sylvain back up (STOP. MISSING.). At this point, Ingrid and Sylvain had learned their basic Reason magic, but their Magic skills are craaaaaaap. Sylvain I know will grow better, and Ingrid we're mostly expecting to crit, but it's a weird progression. I've never gone for straight Magic Ingrid before. When not using magic, she's been proccing her Crest fervently in the hopes that I will reconsider and have her focus on the Lance. *laughs in distance*

At the very least, having Annette, Mercedes, and Dimitri all healing was a boon. Dedue actually crit Lonato to low health, which blew away a lot of his difficulty.

This map is also funny, because I forgot I don't have access to adjutants in the very beginning, so we have to court Ferdinand the old-fashioned way. :P HE SHALL JOIN US YET. If nothing else, his weapon and vulneraries both get restored after each battle, which means "resources I don't have to worry about." As long as he's not stealing exp getting KOs, we're all happy.

Gimme My Sword!:

So I was nervous about this because I know there's a lot of mages here, and the Lions aren't super Res-blessed as a whole. But they were okay! I did split the party--Dimitri, Byleth, Dedue, Ashe, Annette, and Ferdie to the left, and Sylvain, Felix, Ingrid, and Mercedes to the right. With Ingrid's Res, Felix's Crest-laced bow shots, Sylvain's raw strength, and Mercie's healing/Res/magic, the right side was only in deep trouble at one point. I was afraid I'd need to reset entirely, but Felix just straight dodged a lethal hit, and they pushed forward. Plus, Ingrid and Sylvain both knew Heal, which was helpful.

Meanwhile, Left Team slowly fed Annette axe kills, and Dimitri and Ashe dispatched the reinforcements. The kids are shaping up well!

Closing Thoughts:

it's, uh, it's tough. It's a completely different set of resources to work with. Having 3 Divine Pulses instead of 10 really changes how careful I am: if there's an issue, I am closer to restarting the battle than being able to rewind, which is more time spent. I knew I wouldn't start with a lot of activity points, but I had forgotten how desolately you begin. Mostly I have using my AP for faculty training and cooking for the stat boosts. My truest love, fishing, returns to me as I attempt to raise my professor level. But because I'm not dining with students, they often have low motivation, which prohibits me from training as intensely. With the battle time being longer overall, it's not as prohibitive towards weapons, but magic has limited uses, so if I'm not pumping that in lessons, they learn it much more slowly. AND, even though we're getting weapon exp, it's at the cost of the weapons themselves, and this army is NOT made of money. So striving to find a balance is something of an issue, but I think I'm getting it.
