so since the july wrap up i did finish another two books. mouth to mouth by antoine wilson. i rated it 4/5. the dialogue was really good, quite mesmerising honestly. the overarching message of what can be personally justified in pursuit of a life you feel entitled to was interesting to read and quite compelling. a guy meets a guy in an airport and he tells a story of how he basically breathed life into who would soon be his father in law, and in turn what he felt he was owed for being a saviour.
then i read outline by rachel cusk. i adored this book. 🤭 a writer goes to athens to teach a writing course in the summer. a novel in ten conversations, that is so deeply moving. she meets people who talk of their dreams, desires, what freedom means to them in marriage, raising children, how freedom plays into personal responsibility and self improvement (and happiness, specifically. is there a moment we truly stand still in our happiness before seeking the next facet of ourselves to change? especially pertaining to our relationships LOVE this conversation). 5/5
started august reading transit by rachel cusk—the second in the trilogy. more prose in this one as the main character goes through several changes in her life. conversations still around freedom, moreso of change with reflections on childhood and the value of suffering. this was still really good. 4/5
read kudos by rachel cusk to complete the trilogy. stylistically this is a blend of outline and transit. prose with monologues. lovely send out i think. conversations around art, politics, parenthood. a series for the literary girlies honestly. 4/5
then i read indelicacy by amina cain. absolutely stunning cover. sadly not much substance in the writing. very scarce, threadbare. it tries to go somewhere but never leaves. quite disappointing honestly i read it over a couple days and the premise is so good but the execution doesn’t come close to doing anything interesting. 2/5
i’m currently reading the brothers karamazov by fyodor dostoevsky and have been for the past two weeks so. HELP. if i finish this book in september then my tbr will be stoner by john williams, the picture of dorian grey by oscar wilde, and death comes for the archbishop by willa cather. i am really enjoying it so far but it’s literally like i’ll read a chapter and immediately go to sleep been very helpful for my nap times but progress is very slow going 😋
