#i still do mixing w/ an external program

I've seen other people talk about fukase so apparently he sometimes sounds like shit in the program but is fine in the mixer? I uh. Don't actually know what a mixer is bc I've never used vocaloid before bxdgvcvb. Just put him in a blender it'll be ok /j And anyway testing is good! It's good to just fuck around and find out a little bit 👍 -🌟
WOW do not talk shit abt him... so mean smh..
SDHKGJK but a/the mixer is not a vocaloid exclusive thing, its a thing for audio editing and stuff in general. here's a shitty infographic to sorta go w/ the best analogy i could think of to explain how this works
a mixer is just an outside program (ex. audacity) you can use to combine your sound ingredience and make them sound good, kind of like using the kitchen to perfect the ingredients to make a yummy sandwich as shown here. the raw sound files and recordings usually don't sound the best on their own (ex. recording yourself playing guitar in a studio but there's like, ambient noise or buzz) so you might have to do some tweaking in the mixing program to make it sound better (like noise removal, or adjusting volume, panning, add special audio effects, etc). then once you combine everything and it all sounds really nice and good export that shit and mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmaybe itll b okay.
but you are correct i will be putting him in a blender
#ask#technically v5 does have a built in mixer so you can just export straight from there but the built-in mixer is kinda shitty imo so#i still do mixing w/ an external program#sorry if the explanation is a little boring/confusing if im given the chance to explain smthn i will. or will try to#idk how to draw blenders#star anon ollie

After spending most of hdwtotl part 1 pretty much solo with Aziraphale I cannot wait to see how you write Crowley. Chapters 1-6 have been delightful to read, I really appreciate how you've taken the time to pace them out. Aziraphale is so dear to me in your writing.. it's almost meditative at times the way you get inside his thoughts feelings motivations etc. I'm so looking forward to seeing Crowley through your eyes too, and to watch what happens plot-wise when he's properly dropped into the mix! Epecially after that ending in ch.6... what will he make of everything ! What will he do what will he say how will he handle things ! And what on god's forsaken earth has he been doing this whole time!? (why did he take the grand duke of hell position!!)
(Also Aziraphale has been on his lonesome for far too long now he needs to have a proper external conversation w someone about anything, anything at all.. let him out of his head my man is trapped in ther!!!!)
thank you so much!! all of your questions and parts you're looking forward to will absolutely be actualized in the coming chapters. if you've ever read my other fics, dialogue between aziraphale and crowley is my bread and butter so to JUST stay in aziraphale's pov as an individual was a struggle but. an important writing exercise haha
and yeah i don't think i intended to spend like 75% of act 1 (and over 50k words... oops) without aziraphale interacting with the REAL crowley, not just the manifestation of his own guilt in his head. i also feel like for THIS fic it was necessary, though. there's so so much that needs to be undone, established, set-up, explained, etc. about aziraphale's character (let alone the plot) to even have a prayer of sorting through about 6000 years of programming that he's still victim to in some capacity, if the end of s2 is anything to go by. i've fell in love with a few post s2 fics but that's the issue i find with majority of them. IMO you can't gloss over all of that in a few thousand words and still have the fic feel tonally consistent with the characterization and the show, it's just not possible. and tonal consistency is like my only rule when it comes to fic, otherwise i'm just not interested in reading it. do i think you need 50k+ words? no, a better author could've done it in less haha that's just the number i fell on
also... yeah. aziraphale getting a 9 month death sentence, crowley being grand duke of hell, and like a dozen other choices i have planned altogether was just too enticing to avoid. the beauty of slow burn is that it's slow and it burns, but from around halfway through act 2 to the end of the fic it's going to be SCALDING and i go crazy just thinking about it
i'm glad you're enjoying hdwtotl!! <3 this is the first fic that i feel unable to stop writing on. i told myself i'd take a few weeks break for midterms/my other fics/a irl trip i'm taking but! here i am. just wrote the first scene of chapter 7 without meaning to. i feel feral

Headcanon Background
These are my headcanons following the world of “Do You Understand?”
This is just extra world building and character stuff that I didn’t want bogging down the main story or have established in there for future reference. Some of these headcanons are inspired by fics I’ve read btw. I might add onto this in the future.
WARNING: Minor Spoilers ahead - I do suggest reading this after the story is complete.
-this mostly covers Connor, Nines and Hank because they’re the ones I most often deal with. If anyone asks for the others or I think of some for them I might add em.
MasterList
World:
This is Post Pacifist route and everyone lives (best ending)
The actual events of the game take much longer, the revolution doesn’t end until towards the end of December to January.
Some events of the game went a bit differently since the time is stretched and because mister Cage is dumb. Like Markus can’t do the weird look deviation thing for funsies. And Alice is human (even if not shown). And there were more revolutionary events that aren’t discussed but happened.
Androids are also much more open about their inhumaness, they often act more human like around humans. However, while alone, androids tend to talk via their internal networks most often (some choose to outwardly speak only too, it’s just preference) and refer to themselves in less human manners.
Okay ngl I’m not gonna get into how to fix this mess of a world Cage made, I’m going to idealize some things in this fic (like I made a landlord nice and not much ACAB- or really any cop stuff), this is merely for fic purposes. I ain’t gonna play moral battlefield with Cage’s dumbass for what started as a vent fic. Just know I don’t agree with a lot of the decisions Cage made for this game’s plot.
Connor RK800:
The RK800 model was made with less articulations in his face so as to cut corners given he was meant to just be a trial. -He needs to consciously run facial expression programs and they can be quite awkward.
Same vein, Connor’s constant calibration, while also a stim, lack of tear ducts, and blinking glitch are also due to Cyberlife cutting corners
Connor Has ADHD because I do so he does too
He also stims by pacing or running, but he tends to do this in absolute private.
He likes to change his hair color quite often to differentiate himself from Nines (He would change his eye color if he could), he does have Bryan’s curly hair but he still consistently styles it to the game style.
His wardrobe style consists of button ups (black, white and floral), turtlenecks, a dark grey blazer, knee length black coat, black jeans, and dress shoes (often Cyberlife ones since they’re just slip ons essentially)
He has killed/hunted way more deviants (and humans) than in game Connor. When he isn’t with Hank, Cyberlife ordered him to simply hunt down and dispose of any deviants he could find. (they wanted results they just played nice with the law for show)
While he wasn't cruel and let all deviants he met with Hank go (except Rupert), any deviants he found while "off duty" did not receive the same mercies (some would even be found mangled beyond recognition). Hank really amplified the humanity in him but only when present. It was also easier to ignore orders when he had a scapegoat.
He also remembers all prior iterations of himself; while the corruption in memory is still there, it was used to condition him in “right” from “wrong”.
He spent a lot more time with Amanda especially during early trials as well so his loyalty to her is very deep and she is like a mother figure to him.
This is Connor model -54. Past 3 models deactivation: Fell with Daniel while protecting Emma (Successful mission); Success w/ Carlos’ android, but he still self destructed and got shot in the interrogation room when trying to stop them; Stratford tower kitchen but the deviant crushes his thirium pump before running leaving him unable to be saved.
He did go up to the roof and saw how Simon was left behind, but he thought about how Hank would be displeased if he killed this android in front of him, given prior results, so he left back to the kitchen last second. Simon knows he left him alone but he doesn't know why.
*pats his head* this boy can hold so much unprocessed trauma
Also this Connor is not an “uwu soft boy”, he is a bastard man. A nice bastard man, but a bastard man none the less. He will sell you to Satan for a single corn chip (/j). He is severely touch-starved though.
He is very bad at expressing and showing his true emotions in a way that makes sense since he’s spent the last, however many, iterations putting himself in a tomb of denial, fear and anger in order to survive. He often expresses nothing or in a manner that he feels will benefit him (arguably manipulative but he is in constant survival mode still). (unless he gets too overwhelmed by his own emotions like hella overwhelmed)
He wasn’t necessarily “deviant” when a machine, his social relations and general programming just saw the act of being more emotionally expressive as giving him a higher chance of not being killed by his handlers. Basically “if they think I’m like a cute roomba, they won’t kill me as easily”. He still experienced frustration, fear and other emotions he ignored, but he was under command (with code and external pressures), his own AI just got fucky and advanced without anyone realizing it (from trauma).
The books in his apartment are random books hes bought from a thrift store, but there are some mystery books and a sea creature encyclopedia in the mix. - The manta ray plush is a gift from Hank, the Whale is a gift from Nines.
Connor (Nines) RK900:
He looks and sounds exactly like Connor. Height, build, face, voice and everything is the exact same except he has blue eyes.
Arguably Nines’ system name is still registered as “Connor” but he just never felt the need to change it since he just goes by Nines anyways.
He has more articulations in his face, even more than the average android, and he tends to take advantage of this. He does feel bad sometimes after being a walking reminder that Connor meant nothing to Cyberlife, but they both tend to not want to talk about that and just ignore it. He doesn’t know how deep Connor’s jealousy goes though.
Given he activated deviant, he really isn’t sure what being a machine is like or having to follow orders. This sometimes is a disadvantage as he doesn’t get sometimes why androids, like Connor, would lean so heavily onto their old programming.
This also means, he’s very expressive and open about his emotions. They were free so why would he try hiding what he felt ? (This can sometimes get him in trouble)
Where Connor changes his hair, Nines wears very loud and vibrant clothing, if he finds a shirt that screams ugly he will wear it. His usual get up is asymmetrical colored button ups, whatever pants he grabs that morning, dress shoes (don’t worry they’re ugly too) and his favorite highlighter neon yellow and orange hooded jacket. He also tends to change into more comfy wear when at his room in New Jericho.
He is partnered with Gavin Reed, but those two really aren’t friends and never will be. Nines can handle him just fine at work but he would never invite that man anywhere near him after it. He is friends with most of the DPD. People find him really friendly and enjoy talking to him.
He also owns a cat named Clem, not much is known about her because she’s really shy.
While he still has access to the base zen garden program, the program is not connected to anything and never had the Amanda AI implemented yet. Since he was never rolled off the press properly and Amanda was set to change connections to the new model set when Connor was done, it never happened.
He was released from Cyberlife storage due to an agreement between them and Markus that all remaining prototypes would be released and androids would have access to the tower in order to produce biocomponents and parts (Cyberlife still owns the building arguably and has access to any info/security there though). He’s honestly not that close to the Jericho leadership despite everything. He talks to them every once in a while but he doesn’t actively talk to them.
Arguably yes he is one of many RK900s, but for sake of story, he is the -84 model of the series and the only one we will see.
Hank Anderson:
After the revolution, he offers Connor a place to stay out of worry. He won’t admit it, but he had a gut feeling con man wasn’t doing well (he was right)
He does work on his drinking problem, but he still has a lot of issues and sometimes relapses. He’s slowly getting better.
He’s like a dad figure to Connor but he isn’t his dad. He gives guidance, but he also gets that Connor is arguably a full grown adult even if he is emotionally like 1 years old. He kinda is a dad to Nines too, but this isn’t as focused on in the story. While he is a bit less grumpy (aggressive) enter Connor, he still a bit of a sour boot most of the time. He just is sober while doing it now. He started wearing a ponytail after the revolution to keep his hair out of his face. He lets Connor trim it every once in a while, but he can’t bring himself to go back to the short style. This Hank adopted Cole as a baby after finding him at a crime scene. He never got married. (He jokes about having an ex-wife out of a sense of compulsory heteronormativity and because it’s funny to him) He used to treat Gavin like a son of sorts before Cole’s death, but practically dropped him afterwards which is why Gavin is doubly hostile towards him. The house he lives in now is not the same house he lived in when Cole was alive. He also got rid of a lot of Cole’s stuff when moving (The toys and clothes he kept are in a box in the garage).

Hi! I absolutely love all your creations and I was wondering what program you used to make your models? You've really inspired me to try my own hand at this type of stuff, but it's alllll new to me, so help would be appreciated!!
Hi there, and I’m so glad you like them! I use a program called Daz3D. It is a free piece of software that can be used to render rigged models, most often Daz proprietary models, props, and clothing. The software itself is free, but unfortunately, pretty much nothing to use with it is.
I would never try to caution someone against getting into rendering because it is fun once you get the hang of it and have a decent library of resources to play with, but there are a few things that folks often don’t realize (and I didn’t at first either). So, here’s the skinny…
1 - Cost. CostCostCost. As I said above, the software itself is free. However, the models and clothing and props and lights to go with it are not. I have a library of…maybe about ten different Daz-Branded models (a mix of male and female). Each model can range from about $30 on sale, to over $100. And if you want the model to be anatomically correct, you have to buy the ‘Pro’ version, which is over $100. Sometimes you can snag them on sale - I just bought two new ones (one male and one female) for 60% off, but it still adds up. Then there are the various characters you can buy for those models…each one ranging from about $10 or more depending on level of complexity (the most expensive I’ve seen was I think like $45, but she came with hair and an outfit). These base characters, along with purchasable ‘morphs’ are what allow you to create your own special faces and customized body shapes. Clothes. Shoes. Props. Lights. Backgrounds. Poses. You -do not- want to know how much money I’ve invested in this stuff. Too much. So much so that I won’t even tell my bf how much I’ve spent because I know he’d blow a gasket (we’re supposed to be saving up for a house). It’s an addiction, one that can be hard to stop. At this point, I really only try to buy stuff when it’s on sale for a deep discount.
2 - Hardware. Daz3D utilizes two different rendering engines, 3Delight, which is old and less resource-hungry (but also results in less-than-realistic images), and NVIDIA IRAY. As you might suspect, because I included the word ‘NVIDIA’, IRAY is a NVIDIA resource. Which means that if you have an AMD graphics card, too bad, so sad….you’re s.o.l. However, even you do have a NVIDIA card, rendering with the IRAY system is hardcore. Like…ultra hardcore. You need the horsepower to back it. Here are my system specs - AMD RYZEN 7 1800X Octa-Core w/ NZXT X62 AIO Cooler MSI Gaming Pro-Carbon Mobo 32GB 3200 Corsair Vengeance RAM EVGA GTX 1080TI FTW3 11GB GPU EVGA SuperNOVA 850 P2 Platinum PSU Corsair Crystal 570X Tempered Glass Case (all fans upgraded) Samsung 960 EVO 250GB M.2 (operating system) Samsung 960 EVO 1TB M.2 (games and rendering which is almost full) Samsung 850 EVO 500GB (games) Western Digital Black 3TB (storage) Western Digital Black 4TB (backup) Western Digital 3TB External (backup) Carbonite (online backup) Acronis True Image 2018 (local backup software)
Don’t ask how much all that cost (like srsly…don’t, lol). And with all that…some renders have still taken several hours to finish. And sometimes, I have to do several passes to blend them all together in Photoshop.
3 - Learning Curve. Yes, you can render out of the box. But, as with any art, you want to make things your own. That leads to customization. Make your own lights. Make your own backdrops. Customize those textures. I’m playing constantly with stuff in Photoshop. That leads to other things, like learning what a bump map is…what a normal map does…what subsurface scattering is for. Learning the basics of photography and composition is also a ginormous help.
4 - Additional Software. Just like above, you -can- make renders with only using DAZ3D. But, if you want to take it to that next level, that means learning things like Photoshop, which adds to the cost. There are free options, such as GIMP, but I never could get a handle on its rat’s nest of a UI…probably because I learned with Photoshop from Day 1 (I have a background of photography and modding other video games). There’s also 3D modeling software. A free option is Blender, but I just couldn’t get a grip on it (seriously, I tried, lol). I ended up dropping entirely too much money on Zbrush. I also use Mudbox to paint the tattoos I make directly onto the model. The tattoos are designed in Photoshop, but arranged in Mudbox.
All this adds up to time and money and patience and practice. Practice.Practice.Practice. I’d imagine it’s like that with any type of art.
Again, I’m not trying to chase anybody away. It really is fun. And I love being able to show people how I’ve always envisioned these characters in my head. Folks especially seem to like my version of Theron, lol. But, it’s also a cautionary tale…because I got in over my head with the money. Thankfully, it’s the one hobby I’ve been spending money on at the moment, so I’ll be okay, lol. But, when I started this journey, I had no idea. None. You see this advertisement for FREE software and then you find out that it’s really not free, lol. Like, at all. It’s also why I’d love for there to be interest in adopting some of my peeps...because it would be hella-nice to make back some of my crazy investment, if only a drop in the giant-ass bucket, lol.
Anyways, I hope that helps!

The approach that H&K have taken to the design of the amp and the compromises they have made for the lunchbox format work really well for me. I had been considering options for an upgrade to my current amp for a while. Wanted something that would work well with my overall set up and be useful for both stage and studio work.
I play ST type guitars for the most part, have used H&K amps in the past but, like others, have tended to find them on bright side and better suited to LP derivatives. That said I have always liked the format and the build quality. I read reviews and decided to give TM Deluxe 20 a go and am not disappointed. The only con I have is that it doesn't come bundled with a foot switch as this is pretty essential in any live setting. Within hours of arrival it was on the way to the rehearsal room.
Hughes And Kettner Amplifiers
I use the amp with a 2x12 cab loaded with celestial V30s. Plugged in the amp, plugged in the footswitch, set the tone controls to mid setting, adjusted the levels of the channels to give a mild crunch on the clean channel and an overdriven 'rhythm' tone on the lead channel with the same volume on each channel and ran through the entire set without changing anything. Several gigs in and I still haven't tweaked much. We play a mix of fairly hard edged R&B as a power trio and I get full and rounded tones from this little amp that sit well in the mix with more than enough balls for most of the venues we play. IMHO H&K's approach is perfect for the lunchbox format. They've concentrated on creating separate channel voicings that are fit for purpose and what they have chosen works great for me.
If you are used to using the tone controls on the amp to get the sound you want, this amp takes a different approach. As I see it the tone controls allow you to tweak the sound for the room and stage dynamics you're dealing with. If you don't like the basic channel voicings H&K have given you then this is probably not the amp for you, though I struggle to see what is not to like.
It also take the guess work out of things. I toyed with giving the amp four stars for features as it is a lunch box and lacks the versatility of it's grown up brothers, but given the sheer useability of the amp combined with power soak, red box DI and a effects loop I believe it rates 5 stars for the format.

A good PDF editor should be able to transform a variety of file types—from Microsoft Office formats to images to HTML—and do so seamlessly, preserving the original formatting. It should also include OCR technology to make the PDF text searchable and editable. Likewise, a good PDF editor must be able to export PDFs into other editable formats such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, HTML, or plain text, maintaining the original files hyperlinks, images, and other elements. Content editing: Another bit of magic that PDF editors unlock is the ability to modify text; insert, resize, and move images; and reorganize pages in the PDF. A good one will perform these tasks as easily as in a text document or slide deck, allowing in-line editing, dragging-and dropping graphics, and adding or removing hyperlinks. Review and annotate: A good PDF editor should also let you or anyone else using it add comments and other annotations to PDF files during review. It should have tools to mark up both text documents and graphic-heavy files like webpages.

Common options include sticky notes, callout boxes, highlighting, freehand drawing tools, and stamps with messages like “approved,” “revised,” and “confidential.”. Security: All businesses deal with documents containing sensitive data. Look for a PDF editor that includes security features that allow access for authorized eyes only. Good options will usually offer several levels of security, including password protection, permissions setting, and content redaction, which “blacks out” selected text and images. It is never an easy thing to transfer files across several computer platforms, like transferring from Windows to macOS. This is especially difficult by the fact that macOS doesn't support to write to NTFS drive, including the newest macOS Catalina. On Windows, NTFS is the default file system for hard drives.
The easiest way to enable NTFS write support is usingNTFS driver for macOS. NTFS-3G and Tuxera NTFS for Mac are two common NTFS for macOS software among users. Here, we will make a comparison between NTFS-3G and Tuxera NTFS for Mac with the aim of finding a better NTFS for macOS software.
NTFS-3G vs Tuxera NTFS for Mac
Here is the comparison between NTFS-3G and Tuxera NTFS for Mac from 3 aspects:
1. Compatibility: NTFS-3G supports macOS 10.12 and previous Mac OS X, but is not compatible with macOS Catalina 10.15/Mojave 10.14/High Sierra 10.13. Tuxera NTFS for Mac supports macOS Mojave 10.14/High Sierra 10.13/Sierra 10.12.
2. Software stability: Tuxera NTFS for Mac is developed from NTFS-3G and has a lot of improvements. Certainly, Tuxera NTFS for Mac performs much better than NTFS-3G.

Time Efficient Multi-Set Strength Training For Fat Loss
I’ve never been a fan of multi-set strength training. I suppose it was because strength training wasn’t my favorite to begin with and I liked the idea of getting it over more quickly. A single set of an exercise takes a lot less time than multiple sets, and the recommendation of the American College of Sports Medicine is that a single set of exercises that hit major muscle groups is good for health purposes. Bodybuilders will cite studies that show multiple sets are 40% more effective than single sets for muscle growth. However, the book High-Intensity Strength Training [1] shows various techniques for adding intensity to single set training that are also about 40% more effective than conventional single-set training, while still being much more time efficient than multiple set training.
I’m sure you’ve seen people hanging out in the weight room at the gym for a long period of time. They do a set of an exercise, than have to wait around several minutes for recovery before the next set . They often spend this time doing things like chatting with other people or playing with their phones (although, admittedly, there are more productive ways to spend this time, like Pavel Tsatsouline’s fast and loose drills). All the time between sets makes a workout take a long time, which has never appealed to me. To each his own. As I stated in my Getting started with resistance training post, multi-sets is effective and may be your cup of tea if you enjoy strength training, but single sets are more time efficient and may be better if you don’t enjoy it.
This is why I’ve always preferred single-set training, with high intensity techniques thrown in. My favorite is a variation of what’s called “breakdown” training *similar to “drop sets”): I do a single set, pause a couple of seconds to recover, than squeeze out a few more reps. In breakdown training, it’s recommended to drop the load a little before the extra reps, e.g. move the pin on a machine or grab the next lighter dumbbell. This is even easier with resistance bands, you can just not extend the band quite as much during the extra reps.
Then I discovered isometric training is very effective and even more time efficient than single set training, so I’ve worked that into the mix.
Multi-sets For Fat Loss
So what changed to make me interested in multiple sets again, and how can you make them more time efficient? For many of us, one of our main motivations for working out is to achieve fat loss. There is some evidence that resistance training is effective for fat loss, and recently in several places I’ve read the recommendation of doing resistance training with multiple sets but minimum rest between sets. This doesn’t mean lots of reps with lower weights, it still involves high resistance. It is also similar to “metabolic conditioning” (metcon) workouts done in CrossFit. Hard resistance training with minimum rest between sets is claimed to be optimum for fat loss because it produces a lot of lactate, which in turn promotes secretion of human growth hormone (hgh). It is actually lactic acid that is produced by exercise, but it becomes lactate in the bloodstream after giving off a hydrogen ion.
Just googling “lactate and fat loss” leads to a lot of discussion of this resistance training approach. There is solid science behind the connection between lactate and production of hgh, for example [2]. The connection between naturally produced hgh and fat loss is murkier, It’s harder to investigate because most of the studies found are about externally applied (exogenous) hgh, which I don’t think is a good idea (except possibly if recommended by an MD because you’ve been diagnosed with a deficiency). There are various studies showing a connection between injected hgh and fat loss, for example [3]. For this training approach to be plausible, we have to make the (not unreasonable) assumption that naturally produced hgh will have a similar effect.
Producing “the burn” (lactic acid) while strength training
Multiple sets with minimal rest between sets is not as time consuming. For example, a typical recommendation is four sets of 8 to 10 reps of several compound exercise. Examples might be squats, bench presses, rows, standing presses, and pullups (or lat pulldowns). About 30 secs rest between sets is recommended.
But there are ways to speed it up even more. One is to arrange the exercises in antagonist supersets. For example, the standing press uses muscles like the deltoids and triceps, while the pulldown uses their antagonists like lats and biceps. So you can do a set of standing presses, then immediately jump into the pulldown with no rest. The muscles worked in the press are resting while you do the pulldown, and vice versa. In this way you can quickly go through 4 sets of 2 exercises. The bench press and the row can be paired the same way.
Another option is to use circuit training, so do one set of each exercise, to complete a circuit, and repeat four times, with minimal rest between sets and circuits.
I final trick I like is to use single arm variations. For example, I do a chest press with resistance bands but only do one arm at a time. So I can do a set with the left arm, then immediately switch to the right arm with little rest (just the amount of time needed to switch hands with the handle). I got this idea from “one-man drills” we used to practice in my outrigger canoe club (it really should be called “one-person”, there were lots of women in our club just as good at doing one-man drills as the guys). For four sets I call this “double one-mans” because it’s four times per side.
“One-man drill”: A single paddler is moving the big six-person canoe, while crewmates shout encouragement. Paddling on the left side and right side are repeated twice. Quite a workout!
I do an upper and lower split with my strength training, I concentrate on the upper body twice a week and the lower body two others days. Upper body day had been my least favorite, and the day I was motivated to be as time efficient as possible to get it over with. I do five exercises: chest press, horizontal row, standing press, pulldown, and a twisting exercise similar to kayaking. With a single set, this took about 10 minutes. With four sets and the time saving techniques mentioned, it only takes about 20 minutes. And it is a great workout, I’m gassed afterwards. With a warmup and cooldown, This could be a complete workout for strength and fat loss in about 30 minutes.
This is not my whole workout, I precede it with a warmup and a series of isometric exercise (including abdominal work), then do high-intensity intervals of various resistance stations followed by intervals walking with dumbbells and with poles, and a cooldown. Total time is about 90 minutes. But the extra is more “strength-endurance”, the strength part itself is only about 20 minutes. I do the extra because I enjoy those activities, and hope that this winter I’ll be able to cross country ski and this spring I’ll be able to rent standup paddleboards and kayaks again.
On lower body or “leg” day, I just do my hard training on my bike or hiking. So I didn’t have to change much to implement the multi-set idea, I just bumped up my on-bike strength training drills from 2 sets to 4. I just find a hill, put it in a high gear, and grind a short way up while standing and pulling on the handlebars for leverage, about 10 revolutions (10 reps per leg). This is very similar to a single-leg press but more enjoyable for me. I’m continuing doing the other high intensity intervals I was doing on the bike or up hills hiking. I’ve also added some isometric training to strengthen my calfs and hip flexors off the bike.
Making it Fun
Strength training is a lot more fun for me if I connect it to activities or sports that is will make me better at. The one-sided chest press is like boxing, and one-handed rowing and the kayak twisting exercise are related to canoe and kayak paddling. These exercises also make me more conditioned for cross country skiing. For me, this makes them a lot more fun than if I am just doing them for fat loss. My high-intensity intervals are also more fun because they mimic activities I enjoy.
Results
There are a lot of stories on the internet of people making rapid progress for fat loss with “lactate strength training” (multiple sets with minimal rest between). I can’t attest to that personally, because I never tried it at a time when I needed to lose a lot of weight. But I can say that, for me, it has worked great as a plateau buster. I’m working on getting rid of the last stubborn couple of inches around the waist, and was stuck for weeks, and am now making progress again.
Warmup and Cooldown
My warmup and cooldown are simple. I do exercises at an easy pace that use the muscles that will be doing the work in the main part of the program. So on “upper day” I just do a minimum of 5 minutes of brisk walking with light hand weights. On “leg” day I just spin easily in a low gear on my bike for the warmup and cooldown. You can make a bigger deal out of it than that, especially if you were training for something like powerlifting where you do max lifts. But my simple approach has always served me well.

More than a year later, no credible evidence has been put forward to establish that any votes were changed due to ‘external’ meddling. As the Intercept has reported, since the election progressive candidates seeking public office have been systematically subverted by establishment Democrats in favor of those with connections to big-money donors. And the Democratic Party leadership in congress just voted to give Mr. Trump expanded spying powers with fewer restraints. Congressional Democrats are certainly behaving as if they believe Mr. Trump was duly elected. And more to the point, they are supporting his program.
The choice of Russia would seem bizarre if not for the history. Residual propaganda from the first Cold War— itself largely a business enterprise that provided ideological cover for American imperial incursions, had it that substantive grievances against the American government, in the form of protests, were universally the product of ‘external’ enemies intent on sowing discord to promote their own interests. This slander was used against the Civil Rights movement, organized labor, anti-war protesters and the counterculture of the 1960s.
Therefore, the choice by the Clintonites to invoke a new Cold War by bringing Russia into the American electoral mix is not without a past. Students of history may recall that in the early 1990s Mikhail Gorbachev was given assurances by senior members of George H.W. Bush’s administration that NATO would not be expanded to Russia’s border in exchange for Russia’s help re-integrating East and West Germany. It was Bill Clinton who unilaterally abrogated these assurances and moved nuclear-armed NATO to Russia’s border.
In 2013 the Obama administration ‘brokered’ (Mr. Obama’s term) a coup in the former Soviet state of Ukraine that ousted the democratically elected President to install persons favorable to the interests of Western oligarchs. At the time Hillary Clinton had just vacated her post as Mr. Obama’s Secretary of State to prepare for her 2016 run for president, but her lieutenants, including Victoria Nuland, were active in coordinating the coup and deciding who the new ‘leadership’ of Ukraine would be.
An analogy would be if Russia moved troops and weaponry to the Mexican border with the U.S. after giving assurances that it wouldn’t do so and then engineered a coup (in Mexico) to install a government friendly to the interests of the Russian political leadership. One needn’t be sympathetic to Russian interests to understand that these are provocations. Given U.S. and Russian nuclear weapons stockpiles, the provocations seem more reckless than ‘tough.’ Then consider Mr. Obama’s, later Trump’s, move to ‘upgrade’ the U.S. nuclear arsenal toward ‘tactical’ use.
This is to suggest that it certainly makes sense that the Russian political leadership would want to keep American militarists, a/k/a the Clintons and their neocon ‘crazies,’ out of White House. But as of now, the evidence is that the Russians changed no votes in the 2016 election. As far as inciting dissent— the charge that protests were organized by Russian ‘interests,’ not only does this reek of prior misdirection by the FBI and CIA, but there is no evidence that any such protests had an impact on the outcome of the 2016 election.
Given Mr. Trump’s belligerent (unhinged) rhetoric toward North Korea, if enhancing geopolitical stability was the Russians’ goal, Mr. Trump must be a disappointment. Unfortunately for Mr. Trump’s critics (among whom I count myself), there is a lot of ‘theory’ from American think tanks that supports crazy as a strategy. And it was after Mr. Trump’s provocative posture toward North Korea became widely known that senior Democrats voted to give him additional NSA powers with fewer restrictions.
The most cynically brilliant outcome of the ‘blame Russia’ campaign has been to neuter left activism by focusing the attack on Donald Trump rather than the interests he represents. As evidence, the proportion of Goldman Sachs alumni in Mr. Trump’s administration approximates that in Mr. Obama’s and what was expected for Mrs. Clinton’s. If the problem is Donald Trump, then the solution is ‘not Trump.’ However, if the problem is that the rich substantially controlAmerican political outcomes, how would electing ‘not Trump’ bring about resolution?
As it is, within days of the 2016 election Mr. Trump, his supporters plus the political opponents of Mrs. Clinton were recast as stooges of the Kremlin. George W. Bush and Dick Cheney had required loyalty oaths from their stalwarts. But even a loyalty oath wouldn’t prove that one isn’t a stooge of the Kremlin. And the larger problem with the theory (of Russian meddling) is that the U.S. electoral system was already thoroughly corrupted by economic power.
As students of the scientific method know, you can’t ‘prove’ a negative. Condoleezza Rice used this knowledge in 2003 to sell the George W. Bush administration’s calamitous war against Iraq through the charge that the proof that Saddam Hussein had an ongoing WMD program is that he hadn’t handed over his WMDs. As history has it, Mr. Hussein couldn’t hand over his WMDs because he didn’t have any to hand over. How then would critics of Mrs. Clinton ‘prove’ they weren’t / aren’t acting on behalf of foreign interests?
The answer lies with Democratic Party loyalists. Much as Bush – Cheney supporters were impervious to logical and evidentiary challenges to the rationales given for the war against Iraq, Clintonites believe what they believe because they believe it. For those with an interest and some knowledge of empirical research, read the myriad articles touting ‘proof’ of Russian meddling and find a single instance where such proof is provided. Or with an eye toward not being the half of Republicans who still believe that Saddam Hussein had WMDs, bring the proof forward if it exists.
Here is the disclaimer taken from the National Intelligence Estimate (link here).
The National Intelligence Estimate, initially claimed to be based on input from 17 intelligence agencies, later reduced to selected representatives from three of the agencies (NSA, CIA and FBI), provides no proof for claims of Russian meddling and states quite openly that it is conjecture. Amongst these agencies, one (NSA) is known for illegally spying on Americans and lying about it to congress, the second (CIA) provided fraudulent ‘evidence’ to drag the U.S. into a calamitous war against Iraq where it ran illegal torture camps and the third (FBI) has such a checkered history that is was called ‘Gestapo’ by former U.S. president Harry Truman.
Here is James Clapper, the former Director of National Intelligence, lying to congress about NSA spying. Here is Trevor Timm in the Columbia (University) Journalism Review explaining the many ways former head of the NSA and CIA Michael Hayden has lied to congress and the American people. Here is a brief history of COINTELPRO and FBI attempts to disrupt and discredit the Civil Rights movement. At the time that FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover was accusing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. of being a communist (link above), the term approximated being an agent of Russia.
(Here is a compendium of links related to claims made in this piece: Promise by U.S. that NATO wouldn’t expand to surround Russia. Bill Clinton expands NATO to Eastern Bloc to surround Russia. Barack Obama admits U.S. role in Ukraine coup. James Clapper committingperjury. Victoria Nuland discusses overthrowing the democratically elected government of Ukraine and installing U.S. puppets. Backstoryof CIA and Robert Sheer that supports argument Propornot is government operation with ties to Ukrainian fascists.)
There is circumstantial evidence that the first list of ‘Russian-linked’ websites published by the ‘credible’ media, that of Propornotpublished in the Washington Post (in their ‘Business’ section) to which a disclaimer was subsequently added, was the work of Ukrainians with links to the CIA. The Propornot website (link above) is worth visiting to get a sense of how implausible the whole enterprise is. On it former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Ronald Reagan, Paul Craig Roberts, is listed prominently as a puppet of the Kremlin. And deep-research political website Washington’s Blog made the honor roll as well.
More recently, the New York Times cited the German Marshall Fund as an authority on Russian meddling. The German Marshall fund (U.S.) is headed by Karen Donfried, a former Obama Administration official and operative for the National Intelligence Council. The National Intelligence Council supports the Director of National Intelligence. Here (again) is James Clapper, the former Director of National Intelligence, lying to congress about NSA spying. Derek Chollet, Executive Vice President of the fund, is the former Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Obama administration and a senior member of Hillary Clinton’s Policy Planning Staff.
The question for the Left is why liberals and progressives would align themselves with Hayden, Clapper, the FBI, CIA and NSA, and suspect organizations like Propornot and the German Marshall Fund when most have spent their entire existences trying to undermine and shut down the Left? The (near-term) cynical brilliance of the Democrats’ strategy is through revival of the Cold War frame of national interests that was always a cover for imperial business schemes. As the Intercept articles (links above) have well- uncovered, this is all just business for the Democrats anyway. Can you say class warfare?
Assuming for a moment that not everyone is playing the Democrats’ one-dimensional checkers, if the Russian political leadership really intended to ‘undermine the U.S.-led liberal democratic order,’ as the NIE puts it, it is doing Mrs. Clinton a disservice to suggest that she wasn’t up to the job. From the Clintons’ 1994 Crime Bill to deregulating Wall Street to support for George W. Bush’s calamitous war against Iraq to the U.S. / NATO destruction of Libya, Mrs. Clinton has ‘undermine(d) the U.S.-led liberal democratic order’ just fine.
Likely not considered when the Russian meddling hypothesis was originally put forward is what happens next? The initial charge that America’s ‘sacred democratic tradition’ was soiled when the Russian political leadership hacked the election has run up against the apparent fact that no votes have been found to have been changed. The charge that AstroTurf protests organized by the Russians led to dissent smells a lot like the last half-century of FBI / CIA lies against / about the Left. And the charge that narcissistic plutocrat Trump has been ‘compromised’ misses that he was already compromised by the circumstances of his birth and upbringing. This is the problem.
The Democrats, in their wisdom, have given a gift to the U.S. intelligence ‘community’ that provides political cover for closing down inconvenient commentary and disrupting inconvenient political organizations. A political Left with a brain would be busy thinking through strategy for when the internet becomes completely unusable for organizing and communication. The unifying factor in the initial ‘fake news’ purge was criticism of Hillary Clinton. Print media, a once viable alternative, has been all but destroyed by the move to the internet. This capability needs to be rebuilt.
Bourgeois incredulity that Donald Trump still has supporters could be seen by an inquisitive Left through a lens of class struggle. Yes, his effective supporters are rich, just as the national Democrats’ are— the term for this is plutocracy. But back in the realm of human beings, rising deaths of despair tie in theory and fact to the wholesale abandonment of the American people by the political class. An inquisitive Left would be talking to these people, not at them. The Russian meddling story is a sideshow with a political purpose. But class struggle remains the relevant story.

May 17, 2020
Here is my second blog post, which I think is enough to call it “weekly”. Here I touch briefly on several interesting things I saw, read, or thought about over the course of the week.
The Limits of Decentralized Decisionmaking
Justin Amash, who briefly flirted with a Libertarian Presidential run these last few weeks, made the following claim.
To maximize happiness and well-being, we must embrace localism and decentralization. Individuals, families, and communities make far better decisions than technocrats and bureaucrats in a distant capital.
— Justin Amash (@justinamash) May 10, 2020
This is an attitude that I think is shared by a majority of libertarians, but it has limits, in particular with zoning. A basic political economy problem with zoning is that the perceived benefits (less local traffic, preference for fewer people nearby) are more local than the costs (higher housing prices, depressed economic activity). Therefore, there is a strong rationale for coordination between neighborhoods and cities to reduce zoning restrictions. The logical unit for such coordination is a state or the federal government. The U.S. Constitution does implement open borders and free trade between the states; while the freedom of movement principle has not, to my knowledge, been invoked against zoning, at least the principle has been established that the federal government has a broad interest in the question.
Amash himself has stated that is favorite Amendment is the 14th, which, among other things, extends the protections of the Bill of Rights to the states and cities. It seems logical to me at least that the principle would apply to property rights as well.
Finally, there is a certain romanticization of local government that I think one should question. Due to their lower profiles, local governments are often less representative and responsive to the public need than state or the federal governments, and I simply see no basis for the claim that they, in general, know what is better for their citizens or are willing to act appropriately upon such knowledge.
Zoning as a Virtual Budget Item
While on the subject of zoning, I’ve been thinking about how to communicate the costs and benefits of land use policies. All governments have to make budgets, and costs that are off-budget are more easily put out of mind. And so I’ve wondered about treating zoning as a virtual budget item.
The benefits of land use restrictions are mainly in the form and aesthetic preferences and relief from congestion and other negative externalities of density. The costs are in the form of higher housing costs, depressed economic activity, and higher infrastructure costs (lower in absolute terms, but generally higher on a per capita basis). Several economists have estimated that the United States loses out on hundreds of billions, or even trillions, of dollars of economic activity per year due to zoning restrictions, so these are not insubstantial costs. For a local government budget, we could treat the economic costs of zoning as a kind of tax on the citizens, including a share that is externalized to other jurisdictions, and compare it to formal budget items such as roads, police, fire, schools, etc. It wouldn’t surprise me if this exercise shows that, for most cities, zoning is the most expensive thing that they do. Making the costs explicit would force a more careful reckoning of whether the benefits are really worth the costs. Since housing costs are regional, it would help if one city was more aware of the costs imposed on it by its neighbor’s land use policies.
It would be a challenge to tally up costs of land use policy in this way, and the result would no doubt be contentious. But I don’t think it would be too terribly hard to make a first pass. There are some decent estimates of the price elasticity of housing supply, and we could probably come up with a guesstimate of how much housing a city could support under an unregulated market.
Cities and Disease Risk
Joel Kotkin has a very interesting piece this week, putting the risk of infectious disease in cities in context. I think the evidence is pretty clear that, all else being equal, larger cities impose more risk of infectious disease. That’s what one would expect. The whole point of a city is that it fosters high levels of interaction both with other residents of the city and people from other cities. As Luis Bettencort points out, cities are social reactors, accelerating transactions such as commerce and the spread of ideas. But the same nature accelerates undesirable transactions, such as crime and infectious disease.
Kotkin goes on to point out that not all else is equal. Among the world’s megacities, Singapore, Hong Kong, Seoul, and New York City have all had very different outcomes during the ongoing pandemic. He points to the history of achievements in public health that have enabled dramatic city growth since the 19th century while simultaneously improving safety. There is much the world’s cities can continue to do for further improvement. This is a much more sensible approach than trying to respond to pandemic risk by undoing urbanization.
How far will the virtualization of travel go?
I joined in a conversation this week with Mark Frohnmayer of Arcimoto and several other business ventures. He made a prediction, which I have seen in quite a few other forms recently, that the world is undergoing a permanent shift toward remote work and the replacement of business travel with videoconferencing. To paraphrase his comment as best I can, people now realize that there is no need to fly across the country for a half hour business meeting that could have just as well been done over Zoom.
I hope he’s right, but it should be noted that this is only the latest iteration in a debate that has been going on for decades. The historical evidence is quite mixed. Before the pandemic, the rate of remote work had been creeping up but was still under 5%. We were also in the midst of a long term increase in the volume of air traffic, and at least some evidence suggests that there is a complementary relationship between air travel and telecommunications.
Once the pandemic subsides, what will be radically different? I think it was just as obvious last year or in the 1980s as it is now that there is no need to fly across the country for a half hour business meeting. There must be reasons (not necessarily good reasons) for doing it, and I would not place any confidence in predictions about future travel patterns that do not show understanding of those reasons.
Overall, I see an abundance of sociological questions around virtual travel that are not adequately answered. I think there is an enormous need for more research on the topic, as smart use of telecommunications could be the most important solution we have for chronic urban challenges such as traffic congestion and housing costs.
The “Growth at all Costs” Strawman
There is a pervasive notion in academic and activist environmentalism that the world is currently structured on a “growth at all costs” paradigm which needs to be changed. This paper, by Robert Costanza and colleagues on ecosystem services, is the example that triggers this comment but is only one of many.
Now, I won’t comment right now on how economic policy should be structured, but as a descriptive matter, this trope is absurd. There exist numerous laws in every country in the world that restrict growth, at least in the short term, and protect the environment, restrict migration, enact trade barriers, limit urban development, protect labor, and so forth. In well over a decade of political activities, “growth at all costs” is not even remotely close to how policymaking is done at any level of government I have ever observed.
I think there is some importance to ecosystem services as a research topic, and it is one I am actively working to understand better. Unfortunately, the presence of such patently absurd statements about economic policy calls into question the credibility of the broader work.
Oregon Metro on Affordable Housing
This week the Oregon Metro Council held a work session to review last year’s affordable housing bond. The work packet is here if you care to see the details.
Overall the bond is for $620 million to build 3900 housing units, or about $160K per unit. This is already about twice what the private sector builds apartments for, but these figures are only Metro’s contributions, which leverage money from nonprofits or other governmental entities. In four projects profiled in the work packet, construction costs are $130K/unit of Metro money, $364K/unit total, and $261K per bedroom.
During the work session, several councilors asked questions about the cost and expressed hope that the bond could be extended beyond the 3900 planned units. But most of the discussion was on matters such as the COBID program, which steers contracts to small and minority-owned businesses, prevailing wage and construction labor diversity requirements, and insuring that protected minority groups are fairly represented among residents of the new units. Whatever the merits of these policies may be on their own, I saw no questions about or any attempt to quantify their costs.
There is another big question on the efficacy of the bond that I saw no attempt to address. Since Metro cities restrict zoning capacity through density rules and the Urban Growth Boundary, to what extent will these 3900 new units compete with the private sector for scarce zoned capacity? If there is competition, then the gain of affordable units could be offset by a number of people being priced out of the private market.
The main problem with policies that are designed to accomplish many goals is that they don’t accomplish any goals very well. If the goal is to provide affordable housing to the maximum number of people who need it, then the most efficient solution is to increase zoned capacity and provide vouchers for people who can’t otherwise compete on the private market.

Macbook Pro 16 Ableton
For this review, I tested Ableton Live Suite 10.1 on a MacBook Pro 15-inch with 16GB RAM and a 256GB SSD running macOS 10.14.5 Mojave, along with a Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 (Second Gen) audio. February 24, 2021 4:50 am. Hey guys, a EASY WAY to bypass the permissions of the app, that doesnt let you to open is just DOWNLOAD TORRENT TO AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE, then extract the zip file on the Hard drive, open DMG and put ableton on applications, then be sure to follow every step on the instructions text file.
It used to be that only musicians who spent a decade traveling the world in a van and playing to anyone who would listen would have a chance of making an album. For almost half a century, the entire music business was dominated by major labels who dictated what was and wasn't popular.
All of that changed with the rise of the internet - music distribution became as easy as sending a message. With the evolution of technology, home recording exploded into a market that now rivals major record labels with the ease of access to anyone who can string a few chords together. But here in which lies a new problem.
With so many musicians and composers able to flood the likes of Soundcloud and Spotify with music, it's still difficult to stand out from the rest. Part of that will be your musical writing and playing talent, but another major factor is ensuring that you get a clear, professional sound in your finished tracks.
The battle between Mac and PC is still raging on, but many professional sound technicians have thrown their votes in for Apple as the best laptops to produce music on. Apple's interfaces and software programs, such as Logic Pro X and Garageband, offer a wide range of options to create your unique sound.

View The Best MacBook for Music Production Below
This Macbook runs on a 1.6GHz dual Intel Core i5 processor, which is on the low end of the performance when compared to the i7 processors, but won't cost you nearly as much. Even with the i5, you will be able to run most software and DAW packages. It comes with 8GB of Ram and the option of a 128GB or 256GB SSD hard drive.
The stereo speakers are excellent quality, although, for any recording technician and their laptop, we recommend investing in some good quality over-ear headphones to get the most accuracy out of your mixes. Where the Air Retina scores points, is in the 13.5-inch full HD screen. As a sound technician, you will be staring at your DAW for hours on end as you work to get your tracks sounding as good as possible.
The HD Retina Display has razor-sharp resolution so you can see every detail of your work without making your eyes bleed. The Air Retina also comes with two Thunderbolt 3 USB ports for fast connectivity to your audio input devices, so your music production never has to wait. This makes it an efficient and the best Mac for music, whether you're a pro or just starting.
Pros: + Amazing HD visuals. + Fingerprint touch bar ID to keep your contents safe. + Made from recycled aluminum, be eco-friendly!
Why We Liked It -With a razor-sharp resolution, and a great stereo quality, this computer is more than adequate for music production.
The Apple Pro Retina differs from the Air Retina through the sheer bolstering of power. Its Intel Core i5 processor runs at an increased 2.3GHz, making it just that little bit faster, and ensuring your software packages are running a little smoother.
The RAM on the Pro Retina comes in a range of speeds, topping out at a whopping 32GB, four times the amount of the Air Retina. This is great if you're planning to use multiple VST instruments, plugins, or other multi-program setups in your DAW and will ensure you have no issues with latency or stalling.
This is the best Mac Pro for live music for this reason as well. The Intel Iris Plus 640 graphics are so clear and crisp, you know you'll have no problem working and cueing from this laptop in a busy club or venue environment. The Macbook Pro Retina even can be upgraded to a quad-core processor for even more punch. It packs a 128GB or 256GB SSD hard drive and two Thunderbolt 3 USB ports.
Pros: + Fully upgradable + Potential for immense processing power + Superior RAM for multiple VSTs and plugins.
Why We Liked It - This Macbook Pro is an excellent choice of Mac for music production. Aspiring music producers will love the clear and crisp graphics. We love this is the best Mac for music, especially if it's live. Why not invest in a Macbook Pro?
The Macbook Air uses a 2.2GHz dual-core Intel i7 processor, making the most powerful Mac for music production on our list in terms of speed. The i7 can even be turbo boosted to an incredible 3.2GHz for even better performance. Where the Macbook Pro Retina stands as a competent live performance laptop, the Macbook Air gives you almost guaranteed performance reliability, and it's lightweight for easy traversal between venues and home studios.
This Mac for music comes with 8GB of RAM, which isn't quite as much as other models, but the superior processing power it makes up for it. The SSD hard drive comes in either the standard 128GB or the massive 512GB. That's over half a terabyte to store your music on! The Macbook Air uses a 4K screen and Intel HD 6000 graphics to give what might be the best resolution out of all the laptops on our list.
Macbook Pro 16 Ableton Pro
It comes with two USB 3 ports, one Thunderbolt 2 port, and an SDXC card slot. While these are not quite as fast as the Thunderbolt 3 ports on the other models, the Macbook Air makes up for it in its impressive range of other specs. This is still one of the best laptops for live music.
Pros: + Unrivaled i7 processor power. + 4K Screen display. + Largest SSD hard drive.
Why We Liked It - There's a reason this has made our list of the best Mac for music production. It's reliable, lightweight for easy travel, and the power behind this Mac is equal to none.

RAM and Processor
Why is RAM and processing power so prominent in the specs of music production? The best analogy is to think of it like books and a table. Imagine that your RAM is a table, and your computer programs are books.
The larger your table or RAM is, the more books (programs) you can have open at one time. Your processing power is how fast and how many of those books (programs) you can read at once. Most Mac recording software operates as a cluster of smaller programs, normally consisting of a sequencer, VST or instrument library, inputs, and a few other functions, depending on which software package you use.
It's always important to look at the minimum spec requirements of whatever music production software you plan to use to ensure your Macbook can handle it. All the laptops we've looked at are capable of running most of the popular program packages (see our programs section), but some fine tweaking or optimization is often a good idea.
Hardware inputs
If you want to use microphones or a DI, you will need to invest in an input device for your Macbook. There are many available in a wide range of brands, prices, and qualities, so it's worth doing some research to find which is best for your style of music. Some DIs come as just an input box that allows you to run an XLR cable or jack-lead into your laptop so you can use your DAW's internal sound effects and alterations.
Other DIs, such as Line 6's guitar POD range, also come with additional software, such as digital amplifiers and plugins, that you can record in real-time into your sequencer. If you are a writer of dubstep or EDM, a guitar package is likely to be of no use, so have a look and see what's required for your genre and recording style.
Programs
Finding a music production program or DAW that works for you can sometimes take a while. It comes down to personal preference and the setup for how you write and record music. For example, Steinberg's Cubase range allows for huge amounts of customization of MIDI, VST, and audio inputs, which makes it great for EDM or electronic genres.
It does not lend itself live performance as much, though. Pro Tools, while widely revered as one of the most professional audio interfaces, offers very little in the way of VST or digital instrument support and programming. This makes it best suited for audio input based genres like rock, metal, or indie.
The best thing to do is research your music production software, try it out, and if it doesn't work for you, move onto another music production program until you find one that does. While some packages can be expensive, you can find plenty of free alternatives online to play around with.
Here's a list of some of the best paid and free music production software for Mac available right now.
Ableton Live (Paid)
Logic Pro X (Paid)
Avid Pro Tools (Paid)
Garageband (Paid)
Steinberg Cubase (Paid)

Questions
Which is better for music production? Mac or PC?
There is no definitive answer as to which are the best laptops for music production. It comes down to personal preference. Most professional music producers tend to lean towards Mac based on reliability. However, there are plenty of music producers who prefer the most customizable options you get with a PC.
How good your end product is, depends on your competence as a musician, audio technician, and sound mixer. Choosing between a Mac, PC, and your recording software will not suddenly turn you into a pro-level music producer - that only comes with time and experience.
Which Macbook is the best laptop for music production?
From our list, our favorite is the Apple Macbook Pro Retina. The options to upgrade the laptop to 32GB Ram and a quad-processor gives it the edge to make it an exceptionally powerful machine. The only reason it beats out the Macbook Air is because of the higher quality Thunderbolt 3 ports, which provide a faster connection to DIs.
While the two other models still have respectable specs and features, the Macbook Pro Retina is a nice all-rounder of all of them, making it a versatile, and not to mention, beautiful looking laptop.
Macbook Pro 16 Ableton
What does DAW mean?
DAW stands for Digital Audio Workspace. It refers to your sequencer or display that shows all of your audio files during recording so you can tweak, cut, copy, mix, and enhance your samples.
What does DI mean?
DI stands for Direct Input. It refers to when you plug an audio instrument such as a guitar or microphone directly into your computer.
Expert tip
Macbook Pro 16 Ableton Plugin
Whether you're aiming for a PC, a Macbook Pro, or an Air, It's always a good idea to get a laptop that can run above your music software minimum requirements. While your software will run, you may experience long loading times, latency, or syncing issues. When you're in your creative mode, the last thing you want is to be troubleshooting technical issues, so in the long run, it's worth the investment for the extra processing power and RAM.

… Augh…
To be completely honest in yet another look into my psychology that no one wants bc I am very sleep deprived and emotional atm and anxious about going back to work…
The more I think about it, the more I kind of dread Zero-One airing again.
Bc on the one hand, yes, the Shooting Special and everything has started to feel a little bit like ‘hey, remember when Horobi and Fuwa actually interacted? Ha ha! Got you good w/ that didn’t we?’ but on the other… The show restarting also means pretty much certainly going right back into taking things too personally, getting overly emotional about things and irrational feelings of abandonment. And then I just begin to feel like absolute shit again.
The reasons are really complicated… My depression and anxiety is characterised by paranoia, low self esteem, over identifying w/ trivial things, and a desperate need for external validation. To put it very simply, there is a part of my brain that is constantly trying to tell me I’m a horrible person who can’t do anything, the stuff I love is stupid, and everyone secretly hates me. And when I’m cooped up w/ little else to think about… The voice gets quite a bit louder.
Horobi and Fuwa got really important to me (and also Horobi and Jin, but the main thing I’m thinking on here is Horobi and Fuwa), esp when things started going to hell, and esp when I got put of furlough, and again had to deal w/ the psychological effects of being stuck at home. I feel like there’s at least a side to everyone that does takes things a little personally if they’re really invested in ‘x’ and see something that comes across as saying ‘this new thing ‘y’ is so much better than ‘x’ why would anyone think about ‘x’ when ‘y’ is around,’ but for me it is so much worse bc of how deeply invested I get and bc of what they mean to me in this situation, and bc of all the circumstances going on around me. It’s stupid, I know, to be so emotionally invested in a fictional relationship that I get distressed to this degree, and believe me, it’s not that enjoyable for me, either. The part of my brain that rationalises that ‘this isn’t about me, it’s okay that I like x even though it’s not popular and other people like y better’ just… Doesn’t always connect. And then I’ve got that part of my brain that’s parroting the idea telling me that ‘see, everyone else hates this thing that you love, you’re stupid for loving it and not being able to get into this new thing like they are and they think you’re annoying and stupid for loving it’ (people actually saying they hate the thing is not a prerequisite, unfortunately, no, my brain must assume the worst at all times). And it just… Snowballs.
I dunno if any of this makes sense. I’m just… I’m really, really invested in these two characters, and I really don’t want this to turn into what I’ve started to think of as the ‘Zi-O Effect’ where I lose the will to be invested in and write about something bc I see people talking about how much they hate it (or, rather, in this case, noticeably talking more about this other thing and my brain takes that as ‘don’t care about/think this new thing is better and you should feel bad for liking ‘old’ thing’), and still haven’t regained it. I’m just… Scared that when Zero-One restarts, I’m going to quickly find myself back in a hole of being unable to write about/for these characters and this relationship I really, really love that really matters to me bc that voice about how ‘no one else cares, get w/ the new program you’re annoying everyone by still talking about them and complaining about it’ comes back w/ a vengeance.
I don’t know. DX I’m just… Scared. It’s… Not fun. To put it simply.
Basically, like, zero self esteem, crippling loneliness, and a desperate need for external validation is a great mix w/ paranoia, over identifying w/ trivial things, and irrational reliance on outside serotonin! Would recommend!
#Firebird Salt#Firebird Negativity#would NOT recommend#I'll probably delete this later#sorry for making anyone read my shit#if you did read it

Bitcoin and the Effects of Monetary Policy
Monetary policy occurs when Central Banks adjusts the interest rate, buy or sell government bonds, and change the amount of required bank reserves (1). The combination of actions taken in these three areas is often referred to as either “expansionary”, to grow the economy, or “contractionary”, to slow down the economy. Good monetary policy, however, promotes what economist refer to as the dual-mandate: price stability and high employment. Central Banks try to enact the dual mandate by targeting inflation rates, stabilizing prices and minimizing unemployment (2). But if you’re not an economist, academic, or banker, why should the average person care about monetary policy? The answer is that these indirect decisions influence whether or not individuals get laid off from their job, receive a loan to buy a car, or obtain strong returns in their private investments. I’m going to argue that if you’re a crypto-enthusiast, you should care even more than the average person about the potential positive and negative influences of bad monetary policy. Crytpocurrencies like Bitcoin are unique, but still susceptible to the same economic laws of supply and demand.
The Bitcoin (BTC) market price is determined by supply and demand, but the creation of bitcoins are programmed by algorithms that release and limit the ultimate supply in a predictable way. Thus, the price fluctuation is mostly affected by demand (3). Volatile prices are currently a consistent challenge for the crytpo-enthusiasts because this technology is still relatively new and has not reached a mass critical point of consumers yet. As you will read below, failed monetary policy resulting in price instability, inflation, deflation, unemployment, as well as the inability to legislate or regulate currency could have positive or negative outcomes on the demand of bitcoin.
POSITIVE OUTCOMES FOR BTC
If monetary policy were to fail and economic systems given the chance to be reconfigured based on Blockchain technology (instead of government agendas), there could be several positive outcomes that stabilize and increase Bitcoin’s price. A new international standard setting organization that put in place better defined cyber property laws and established an anti-inflationary currency would all allow the real demand of bitcoins to rise.
Governments currently struggle with the ability to regulate internet marketplaces and technologies like Bitcoin. If companies were able to legally own the computer code that makes up their product or service as private property, it would present an incentive for major players to follow government regulation (4). News reporters could get paid per article views and musicians could earn royalties on direct downloading of songs. Strengthening and defining intellectual property law is the natural first step for technology that deals in digital assets. At first, regulation needs to be general in nature, and lawmakers should essentially do nothing. By doing “nothing”, it would allow developers to create best-practices and self-regulation (5). Letting Blockchain evolve on it’s own with clear, general rules, allows companies to have an advantage if they provide stronger security and transparent processes because that creates more trust with the users. Add digital identity in the mix and it will enhance the government’s power to regulate. Utilizing Civic is one way to connect identity to a site or digital asset ownership (6). Consumer confidence and BTC prices would rise if they knew the government felt comfortable and in reasonable control of Bitcoin and Blockchain tech.
In a failed monetary policy system, creating a new third-party organization to oversee and create policies around ethical crypto markets could also increase Bitcoin prices. Similar to a Blockchain driven version of the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund (IMF). These two organizations lend funds based on economic reforms and stable policy in place (7). One of the many uses for blockchain is transparency of supply chains and humanitarian aid funding in emerging countries. Aid-tech is one such company that could be used by this treaty organization in providing enterprise level solutions to international NGOs, governments and corporations to help them deliver digital entitlements and digital identity in global development (8). This new Bitcoin World Bank could automate these pre-requisite policies and provide proof of change to loans given for each development milestone through the use of smart contract technology. Regulatory organizations could even compete with their own transparency standards, allowing the institutions who add the most value to the customer to come out on top.
Inflation is a tool used in good monetary policy, but can quickly become an economic nightmare if unrestrained. Inflation occurs when prices steadily increase and purchasing power falls due to money creation (9). There is some benefit to this because it encourages people to spend and stimulate the economy while they have money in their possession, but is more often than not appears abused by governments. In the US, government officials have used inflation as a substitute for taxes (10). This distorts prices, erodes savings, discourages investment, inhibits growth, and can even lead to political unrest (11). Bitcoin demand and prices would increase in such an economic environment because consumers would see Bitcoin’s benefits as an anti-inflationary store of value.

NEGATIVE OUTCOMES FOR BTC
Recently, I learned how monetary policy is driven by political desires, not economic necessity (1). If the Government’s conflicting desires end up permitting deflation, premature regulation or massive unemployment, Bitcoin’s price could drastically drop.
On the opposing side of the inflation argument lies the deflation risks associated with Bitcoin because of the 21 million limit. There could be a negative price effect if the bitcoin created by miners is not released quickly enough to meet the demand. Lacking enough money in circulation to satisfy the public demand can lead to deflation. This is what happened in the early 1930s that turned a recession into the Great Depression (2). During the Great Depression, people were hoarding money because they saw the value of their savings at an all time low. A funny expression in Bitcoin community culture that illustrates this is H.O.D.L pronounced “hode-uhl”, and means “hold on for dear life” (3). In “The Blind Economists and the Elephant: Bitcoin and Monetary Separation”, Dr. Evans tells us that deflation favors individuals who save (4). As a result, bitcoin users aren’t stimulating any transaction volume or Bitcoin demand.
Setting strict legal regulations on Bitcoin while it is still a developing technology is one of the greatest threats to damaging best-practice controls and competitive advantage. In his legal essay, Cyberspace and the Law of the Horse, Frank Easterbrook says “the blind are not good trailblazers” (5). He encourages lawmakers to be hesitant in leading the way on regulating innovative technologies in lieu of subject matter experts. If more general statutes are not considered before specific laws, essential principles will be overlooked and the consequences would lead to ineffective or worse, damaging, legislation. One real world example includes China’s government outlawing local exchanges (6). Bitcoin’s price dropped from $5,000 to $4,108 in less than a week. Many experts agree that uncertain regulation outcomes will affect the demand of crypto-assets.
Finally, an increase in unemployment due to failed monetary policy would deteriorate consumer confidence. You wouldn’t spend money on buying cryptocurrency, like Bitcoin, if you were fearful that you would not be able to supply the immediate needs of your family in the near future. If demand falls, Bitcoin prices would also fall. For instance, during hyperinflation (failed monetary policy), people who own valuable commodities like gold are the individuals who benefit most (7). But hyperinflation usually exists within real widespread financial crisis, followed by unemployment and lower average incomes. Psychologically speaking, buying intangibles like crypto-assets would be perceived as unnecessary spending during an economic depression.
Central Banks all over the globe work to provide monetary policy by putting regulation in place to stabilize prices, target inflation rates and minimize unemployment. But if macroeconomy regulations were to fail the general public, there would be no hope for government intervention in crypto markets or bailing out bitcoin as a medium of exchange (8). The Bitcoin price would be determined by the equilibrium quantity of demand and supply forces that operate in all other markets.
