Sicilian Family Search
Aspra, Bagheria, Santa Flavia
We spent two months in Sicily looking for Krystal's family. Join us as we search the streets of Palermo in this 20 min long documentary. Transcript follows in English and Italian (Google Translated). Make some popcorn and be sure to leave a little space for processing:
vimeo
In the spring of 2023 I spent 2 months in Sicily looking for clues about two lines of my family, Salvatore Pecoraro and Angeline Distefano. There is a dark pain that rests deep in the minds and hearts of my family. I also wrestle these demons. My calling as a genealogist is rooted in the relentless pursuit of understanding the unsettled waters in myself and others. This is a story about seeking, being wrong, and not giving up until the truth is revealed. This is healing through storytelling.
Twenty one years ago my grandmother died on my father’s birthday. People recall my grandmother, Maryanne, as a rebellious teenager and unfit mother. She married my grandfather at the age of 16 and was three months pregnant when her mother and sister signed the marriage certificate as witnesses. My grandfather is listed as having no job and he would find himself in jail just a little over a year after their marriage leaving my grandmother with a new baby and pregnant with my father. The story continues from there and is rife with pain, more marriages, and unclear memories. On November 18, 1959 the Kenosha News paper ran a small excerpt on page 8: “Infant Son Dies Theodore John Mielke, the two-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Mielke, died at Milwaukee Children’s Hospital Tuesday noon. The boy was born on Milwaukee Sept. 19…” and that is when things really came apart. All of the children were removed from the house. My father went to St. Amelian’s Orphanage and was raised by nuns and his brother and sisters we spread out through Milwaukee County.
My great grandfather was named Salvatore Pecoraro and went by Theodore in the United States. He married Angeline Distefano, my great grandmother. My second great grandfather was Giuseppe Pecoraro born in 1876 near Bagheria, Sicily. In June of 2022 I found an image on Ancestry of Giuseppe Pecoraro and I messaged the woman who posted it. She shared so much including tips about a trip she and her husband made 20 years earlier to Aspra, Sicily where the family still lives today. Details and connections were fuzzy because of the time that had lapsed, but she shared what she could remember. There is an Antonella and you must go find Antonella Pecoraro in Aspra. The photograph listed everyone, including Giuseppe’s father and mother: Antonion Pecoraro and Maria Vitale. I carried this photograph through the streets of Palermo asking everyone I could think of if they could tell me anything. The Archivio de Stato was able to locate the birth record for Antonino Pecoraro. Days of digging led to death records for Antonino and a marriage record for him and Maria Vitale. I added details and began figuring things out. Giuseppe Pecoraro was born in 1876 and Antonino and Maria Vitale were married in 1884.
I plotted all of the clues I had and discovered the location of the Pecoraro family home in Aspra. I had an image of the front of the building with cars parked perpendicular to the building. The streets in Sicily are very narrow and I knew not every building would have this feature. Sure enough I found it. We packed up a day pack and took the train to Bagheria from Santa Flavia. Aspra is about a 30 min walk from the train and Google Maps took us on a wild adventure down an old dirt road.
I wanted to stop by the anchovy museum. Something told me there would be clues there and I was absolutely right. Images and artifacts spread around old boats and tools guided our way as we wandered through the displays of past lives in Sicily. There were no tickets to this museum and it also seemed like there may be no people either. After a bit we turned a corner and found a man and couple capturing a video in one of the rooms. We entered quietly and then were greeted with a string of Italian. Google Translate to the rescue! After a moment it became clear: I returned to the land of my ancestors and the gregarious fellow, Michelangelo, was the founder of the museum. And so began our afternoon of immersion into the history of Aspra, Sicily and the importance of returning to the land of your ancestors. Michelangelo and the other folks that day taught me about the importance of returning to the places where we are from with our hearts open. The memories of fishing, song, and creativity are imprinted in my bones and having the opportunity to spend an afternoon learning and engaging was truly a gift. Magic is waiting if we give it a chance to find us.
We stopped in a small cafe by the sea for a snack before venturing to the door of the house of the Pecoraor’s of Aspra. Armed with a hand-written note explaining my mission in Italian: “I am a descendant of Giuseppe Pecoraro and Sheila Pecoraro shared information that helped me find you” we walked up to the door. Faded tape on the mailbox held the faint outline of “Pecoraro.” We found it and I rang the doorbell knowing full well that whoever answered was certainly not going to speak English. Gulp. The slats of the shutter opened and a suspicious woman grumbled. I slipped the note through the crack in the door and pulled up my trusty family photo. I do not speak Italian, but facial features communicate a thousand words and her face told me “WHAT?!” Just then Antonella came out from the side door with her daughter. On their way out and through broken English we shared that I am a descendant of Giuseppe Pecoraro and I have come here to say hello. Antonella had to go and said we should go inside.
Through gestures and Italian commands we were directed to sit at the kitchen table. One second. From the back of the house emerged an 85 year old man in a fishing hat and flannel. Time to get out Google Translate. Except he only spoke SIcilian…which is not Italian, not even close. We were able to suss out that this gentleman is the son of Giuseppe Pecoraro and who am I? Our dear friend Janel in Rome said to call anytime we got into trouble. It was time to phone a friend. Janel was on speaker, the daughter was shouting in Italian, and the father was pleading with Mary in Sicilian. “They are saying they do not know a Salvatore Pecoraro.”
Absolutely devastated, we walked back up to the Bagheria train stop as the sun set over the orange orchards. Just as we settled in the Pecoraro family from Aspra called and let me know they were IN Porticello. What?! The whole family drove to Porticello and they found us at the bar. They sat and explained the family tree again, and again. The family was right, the Giuseppe in Aspra was not related to me. What I believed to be true, based on clues from other family trees I found on Ancestry, was not true at all. I had spent weeks in Palermo looking for the wrong family which was a crushing realization. There is no way Giuseppe of 1876 is the same Giuseppe.
Mary pulled a muscle in her back and the next morning the only place she was going was the couch. I absolutely had to get to the city hall in Bagheria to pull the birth record for Salvatore and Giuseppe Pecoraro. It was the only piece of evidence that would lead to the truth. I arrived at what appeared to be the tax office which was crowded with people. Then I walked across town to another building that may have been a record office. Nope, that wasn’t it either. A really nice lady directed me back to the tax office. I stood across the street and watched the total chaos. Imagine the DMV only in a language you do not understand. I typed a message on my phone “I am hoping to find my great grandfather’s record” and walked up to the security guard. He yelled a few things at me in Italian and I just smiled and held up my phone. Frustrated, he pointed to a blue door across the room and I recognized “Anagrafe” - this was it. The door was closed and the waiting room was filled with shouting children. Five weeks in Sicily taught me to just open the door and that is exactly what I did.
An interesting man was sitting at a very messy desk punching keys in his keyboard with his index fingers. He was shielded behind a towering stack of paper and motioned for me to enter. I showed him my phone message and handed him a hand-writted family tree that included the details for the people I knew were related to me: Salvatore Pecoraro, Giuseppe Pecoraro, and his wife Maria Giagnate. He took the paper and left me in the room alone. I sat amongst the stacks of record requests and prayed. I don’t usually pray, but weeks in Sicily made me think the only people who would answer me right now would be listening for prayers. The man returned and indicated that he found all of the records, including marriage records. Follow him. So I did. He took me back into the stacks and there were all of the scripted records from 147 years ago. I cried. We used Google Translate to communicate and he indicated he would make official copies of everything. I went back to the office and waited. When he returned with all of the records he excitedly pointed at the name of Maria Giante’s father: Cosimo - that was his name too. How could I ever thank this person? He suggested a photo with the original record book, and then a selfie together, and then a hug. And that is when I realized Cosimo was eager to help for reasons that may not have been apparent to me, a married lesbian.
I am grateful to the Pecoraro family in Aspra for taking hours to explain that their Giusseppe was not my Giusseppe. This experience has grounded me in the importance of primary sources and generated a great appreciation for documenting and telling our ancestral stories for younger generations.
A story that hadn’t been told in my family was that of Salvatore Pecoraro’s wife, my great grandmother Angeline Distefano. The search for her began in Phoenix, Arizona. There we spent time with my great Aunt Janet and she shared stories of her mother. Was she adopted? Where was she born? What was her story? While we were in Berlin I had a phone call with Aunt Janet and she remembered a name: Emma Gioia. She remembered that her mother said this was her name in Italy and that she remembered living in a big house as a child. A quick search on Ancestry immediately revealed a ship manifest with an Emma Gioia traveling with her step mother, Giovanna Mercurio from S. Flavia. From Berlin we booked two weeks in Santa Flavia, Sicily and committed to searching for Emma.
Upon arrival in Santa Flavia I went to the city hall. The records are indexed online and I did not find anything for an Emma Gioia born January 12, 1912, but maybe there is something I did not know. On our way to the city hall we passed an old abandoned building with “Orfanotrofio Pezzillo” scrawled below a statue of the Virgin Mary. At city hall we were connected with several ladies who pulled down the 1912 record book. Nope not here. What about the Orphanage? Did they have the records at city hall? The lady responded “what orphanage?” Ah, we left the cookies we brought and went on our way.
A few days later the owner of the local bar caught wind of my mission and said he would take me to city hall to meet with his friend Nancy. Walking into the tiny city hall with the local bar owner turned many heads. I can only imagine. We walked through the familiar doors and knocked on the very door I had been to just days before. Nancy was the same lady I spoke to just a few days earlier. She still had no answers, but this time she shared that I should go to the records office in Palermo. I went to Palermo; I went to the church; I sat outside of the orphanage and begged Emma Gioia to come out of the woodwork; I asked our hosts who connected us to an older gentleman who knows everyone in Porticello, he asked all of the elders if they remembered a Giovanna Mercurio or a little adopted girl.
I am not one to give up. I will keep looking until I find a clue, but this was proving to be a monumental task. On our last morning I stood at the train station in Santa Flavia and accepted that I would have to leave without finding a single trace of Emma Gioia. As the priest repeated to me: mi dispiace (I am sorry). Just then, in the minutes before the train arrived to take us to Palermo, a second cousin posted Emma Gioia’s adoption record to a family Facebook group. The title of the document: “Istituto dei Trovatelli”, Foundling Institute. A foundling is an abandoned child of unknown parents. Child abandonment was so widespread in Sicily that the churches installed wheels that allowed mothers to set their baby in the wheel outside of the church and turn the baby inside without ever being seen. My great grandmother was abandoned as an infant in Palermo, Sicily. She was adopted a year later by Angelo Distefano and Giovanna Mercurio. Six years later they traveled to the US and Emma was listed on the ship manifest as having no family in Italy, the step-daughter, and paid her own passage.
This is only the beginning of a great unraveling of how my grandmother’s inability to be a fit mother was tied to my great grandmother’s experience being abandoned at birth. Where do the demons rest in this story that has never been told?

Aftermath
"What the fuck are we supposed to do now?" Byeong heard the distress in the younger man's voice as he whisper screamed in the parking garage. The two men who had invaded Yoon's apartment not an hour before had now taken him down to the garage where Yoon had taken him time and time again when they went out to restaurants or when they would go shopping, going on their little outings because Yoon always drove - he never took public transportation like Byeong was used to. But now Byeong was here, sitting in the back of an unfamiliar car listening to the voices and whispers of unfamiliar men who had committed acts he never thought he'd have to witness in his life. His chest still felt tense and heavy and he could still feel the sting of bile in his throat, threatening to rise and force him to vomit but he hadn't yet. Not even when he was led out of the apartment and passed the lifeless corpse of his lover, seeing a gaping hole in the center of his forehead had he vomited even if he truly wanted to. But he had felt that all too familiar stinging sensation forming from behind his eyes, salty tears falling down his cheeks. They hadn't seemed to stop even now as he sat here in the running car, he found it strange how these two men trusted him inside this car, leaving it running. They hadn't bound him or even gagged him, he wasn't handcuffed or any of that. They had simply helped him to his feet, gently grabbed him by his wrist and led him downstairs to the garage. The older man had gently helped Byeong into the backseat and closed the door for him, making sure to give a look of concern before turning his back to speak to the younger. Byeong couldn't tell if it was a false look of concern or genuine, he was always bad at reading people. He stared blankly ahead of him, no sounds coming from his mouth except for the struggled breaths that escaped his slightly parted lips. He wanted to sob, to cry and weep and let out heart wrenching wails. He wanted to mourn Yoon, to hold his lifeless body in his arms and stroke his hair and feel the older man's hands on his face and feel his warmth against his chest. He wanted to erase the image of seeing him surrender to the younger man. He wanted to erase seeing Yoon accept his fate. A tiny piece of Byeong even wanted to erase Yoon from his memories completely, if only to save himself from this aching pain he couldn't get rid of. He felt crippled, like if he tried to stand he would fall immediately. He was surprised he could even walk to begin with, he wondered if maybe he feigned strength for his own survival, subconsciously believing if he showed weakness to the murderer that he would become the next victim. "He can't be older than fucking 16." The younger spoke again, Byeong had yet to even hear the older man speak, it had all been the younger ranting and raving in hushed whispers. His tone was filled with panic and worry. The older hummed before looking up at the younger, Byeong turned his head to glance out the window, hoping the two wouldn't notice his curious eyes. But as he turned he saw the older had met his eyes, making contact. Byeong froze but the older made no sign that he even noticed the boy's eye contact. "Are you sure he saw you?" "Of course he fuckin' saw it, Sungho!" The younger grabbed at his short black hair, pulling on the thick strands like he was about to rip his hair out. His leather gloves seemed to catch on the strands and he cursed when he pulled away, yanking off he gloves and shoving them into his winter coat. Byeong wondered if his fingers would get cold from the chilly air now. Did he wear the gloves because he was going to commit murder or were they to protect his hands from the winter air? "Where was he again?" "Hiding in the fucking kitchen." The man sighed and pressed his hand to his temple, shaking his head, "We're so fucked. I-I can't...I'm not killing him, Sungho." The older shook his head, his eyes still trained on Byeong sitting in the backseat, "Of course not. That isn't fair." His voice was even, like he was discussing a business deal, not the fate of a young boy. "What the fuck were you doing with a teenager anyway, Yoon?" The older, Byeong assumed his name was Sungho, shook his head and brought his hand to his chin in a sort of thinking position. He sighed and looked back over to the younger man, "Did the boy look like abused or any of that, Min?" The younger, Min, shook his head. "Did you search the place?" "Yeah, I found some drugs. Some foxy and morphine. Coke of course." Min sighed, running a hand through his very messy hair. "God knows what he's been giving the kid." "I'll check him. Do you mind driving?" "N-no." Min eyed the older, following his gaze which fell onto Byeong who finally turned his head to look forward again, staring blankly at the back of the headrest in front of him. "I think he'll stay with me for some time..." Sungho leaned in close to Min, whispering against his ear, "Does he think it was just you?" Min glanced at his brother, nodding his head. Sungho looked and met Min's eyes, seeing in his younger brother's eyes a reflection of his own. "Good, he may trust me then." ~ Sungho decided he'd ride in the backseat with their his newly acquired houseguest while Min drove to his apartment. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately it wasn't a long drive from Yoon's apartment building to where Sungho lived. Sungho pondered that for awhile, he wondered if he should try and communicate to the young boy while his brother - a murderer in the boy's eyes - was still in the car with them, or wait until they were alone. Either way this was a difficult situation and he would have to tread lightly if he wanted to gain any progress whatsoever. He was ashamed to say that Yoon's execution was one of pure jealousy, rage and hatred and had no logical excuse behind it. The softer side of Sungho saw the pain in the boy's eyes when he glanced at the lifeless corpse of Yoon on his couch and Sungho actually felt guilt for the first time in a long time. He was so blinded by the betrayal of Yoon and Sooji that he hadn't considered Yoon might have had anyone else depending on him. But there was also the negative, was Yoon a secret pedophile? What kind of man had he transformed into while he had been in prison? He had fucked Sooji without a second thought and truly Sooji had turned into someone Sungho never thought he'd see and she was his own family. Maybe Sungho couldn't read people as well as he thought anymore. The sirens of a passing police car, zooming passed them startled Sungho from his thoughts as Min had slowed down and pulled off to the side to let the police car by. He swore he could almost hear his brother's racing heartbeat echo throughout the car. Sungho smiled to himself, even after all this, after all that Min had done all the murders he had committed, he was still so afraid of being caught. Sungho's dark eyes glanced over in the seat to the boy sitting next to him and he caught a glimpse of his profile in the lights of the city. The yellow and orange glow of the streetlights weren't the best lighting but it accented the perfect profile the boy had, his plump lips sticking out just enough to where they almost looked swollen. His nose curved perfectly, like he was a fairy and his short bleached fringe hung over long, thick eyelashes. Sungho found himself strangely intrigued with the boy's appearance and there was a sense of disgust in the pit of his stomach. A feeling of nausea. Yoon was a minor when they met, being 15, but Sungho was 19. Now he was turning 27 soon and this boy was easily no older than 16, maybe 17 and Sungho felt himself attracted. He swallowed the saliva that had been gathered in his mouth and abruptly turned his eyes away from the boy, maybe having him stay at his apartment wouldn't be that great of an idea. ~ Byeong stood behind the older man who dressed far more casual than the younger one as he leaned over bent down into the open window of the sleek black car. He was muttering to the younger, Min, in Korean and Byeong felt a sense of relief that they spoke Korean. Of course they had been since the moment they walked in and spoke to Yoon, but Byeong had been so frazzled he hadn't even noticed. He understood their words but didn't realize why. The last year with Yoon he spent most of his time in the apartment, so he often forgot he was even in America because Yoon made it feel so much like home. "- be fine. Bring back my car to work tomorrow." He heard the tail end of Sungho's sentence. The younger man's voice was quieter and Byeong could hear a shakiness to it, "Yeah well, fucking easy enough for you to say." "Yeongmin." Sungho said sternly. Byeong peeked to the side and leaned a bit so he could see the dark figure of Min in the drivers seat. The tall, younger man had his forehead pressed against the top of the steering wheel and he could see his back was rising and falling in short quick motions. Sungho's hand was moving in slow, small circles on the man's back and he was making quiet soothing sounds. Was he crying? "Wh-what did w-we do, Sungho?" Min lifted his head and in the fluorescent lights of the parking garage Byeong saw the raw, red look of Min's eyes. He was crying. His eyes were bloodshot, the man looked a mess. His cheeks were even blotched. "Just go home, Minnie." Sungho said again in a soothing voice this time. Byeong saw Min's eyes flick up to his brother and there was a look of shock in them, like Sungho had said something unusual. With a quiet sniffle and a clearing of his throat, Min nodded and Sungho took a step back from the car. Byeong watched as the car drove off and out of the parking garage as he felt a strong hand press against the small of his back, leading him to a set of double doors he presumed led to an elevator. "I know you don't trust me." Sungho's voice was soft, like Yoon's but it was deeper. He spoke to him in English, Byeong had trouble making out all the words. He only knew a few, Tompson taught him the basics for customers and Yoon taught him elementary level but oftentimes he was so distracted by the beautiful man he'd forget his lessons. So Byeong kept his eyes down on the ground, watching his shoes meet the dull grey pavement. The doors opened automatically and Byeong's eyes felt like they were assaulted with the bright white lights, Sungho reached out to press a button indicating they wanted the elevator to go up. He could feel the man's eyes on him still. He wanted to pull the hood of Yoon's hoodie up over his face and pull the strings to cover his body, just zip up into a burrito and hide away from the world. "But, I need to know what you were doing at Yoonbae's apartment, kid. Do you have a name? Do you know English?" He kept his head down still even as they walked into the elevator. Sungho pressed a number but Byeong didn't see which, he knew it was a high floor because they seemed to be in the elevator for what felt like forever. His hands were stuffed into the pockets of the hoodie and he really wished he could just shrivel up into a ball in that moment. He didn't want to be there. He wanted to be with Yoon. As the doors opened and Sungho stepped out, he led the boy down a short hallway and walked up to a door, opening it with a keypad much like Yoon had to reveal a large and spacious apartment - also much like Yoon's. The layout was similar, a large open room that included the dining area, living area and kitchen all in one space. It had a set of glass double doors off to the left and to the right were two more glass doors. Sungho let out a tired sigh and pulled out his wallet from the pockets of the black sweatpants he wore, placing it on the counter along with a set of keys and two cellphones. Byeong stood by the doorway as his eyes scanned the apartment, looking over the white leather couches and to the glass dining room table, the apartment seemed clean but also cluttered. There were at least four throw blankets scattered on the couches, the dining table was littered with magazines and junk mail. The kitchen counters had cookbooks, printed out recipes, assorted candies and unopened cereal boxes on the countertops. Near the television on the carpeted floor was a PlayStation with four controllers all scattered near it along with multiple games, some with the cases opened. It was definitely a change from Yoon's very neatly and well kept apartment. Byeong felt his shoulders relax as he watched Sungho walk around his abode, turning on a floor lamp that sat beside the larger of the white couches. He plopped down on the larger couch and leaned his head back against the arm rest, closing his eyes. It really amazed him how much this man trusted him, was this man that stupid or did he really look that harmless? "Extra bedroom is through there," Sungho pointed to one of the two doors Byeong had observed earlier on the right side of the room, "bathroom is the door next to it. Make yourself at home, I guess." But Byeong didn't move. He stood frozen and stuck in place, he wasn't sure why but he wanted to continue to watch the older man. He was...interesting. Like watching an animal in their natural habitat. Sungho lifted his head after a moment and raised an eyebrow at the boy, "Listen kid, you can't just stand there all night." "Byeong." Sungho raised both his eyebrows now. Holy shit he spoke. "It's Byeongki. Pl-please call me B-Byeong." Byeong could feel his hands trembling and he was thankful they were hidden away in his pockets. Sungho sat up on the couch and nodded, rising to his feet. He cleared his throat and shoved his own hands into the pockets of his sweatpants. "You speak Korean then?" Finally Sungho was speaking to him in his native tongue. Byeong nodded, "Y-Yoon was te-teaching me English bu-but..." "It's okay." Sungho spoke in that same soothing voice he'd used on Min just a few minutes before, "Why were you with Yoon, Byeong?" "H-he sa-saved m-me." Sungho felt his heart jump into his throat as he was hit with guilt even harder this time. He wanted to throw himself in front of a bus in that moment. He knew he couldn't truly blame himself. If it wasn't him ordering Yoon's death, it would have been Sooji. And she surely would have made him suffer far worse, making Byeong witness much worse and probably taking his life as well, but still. Sungho tried to swallow the lump in his throat but it was no use. He wanted to hold the boy he saw standing in his doorway. The boy who was on the verge of tears, he could hear the cracking in his voice. He was trying to be strong. He was doing so well. "How old are you, Byeong?" "S-se-seventeen." Byeong was looking down and Sungho heard the hitch in his voice, he saw the boy's shoulders moving and he could hear it coming. He just hoped the boy didn't start screaming and run out of the apartment. He hadn't run yet, that should be a good sign right? Sungho slowly approached him, "Can I come near you, Byeong?" Byeong looked up finally, his cheeks were tear stained, how did Sungho not notice them before? The boy's dark brown eyes were red and they looked raw. His cheeks had fresh tears streaked down them and his skin was blotched and tinted pink from his tears. "Wh-why did M-Min d-do it, Su-Sungh-ho?" The boy's voice broke his heart but a dark part of Sungho also wanted to hear the boy whimper his name in that same way while with the younger writhing underneath him. Sungho swallowed again and pushed his thoughts to the side as he moved closer to the boy, "We can talk about that later yeah? Just know that...we won't hurt you okay, Byeong? I won't hurt you. Min won't either. I promise." Sungho could see in the boy's eyes how easily he trusted. He could see how the boy was beginning to trust him already. Even after everything he saw.

Interview-Ingrid Alice: Fashion photographer creates a wonderland of her own
-Do you agree that you are challenged everyday to create something that has never been created?
Constantly. The sheer number of images that get uploaded to Instagram alone every day (on average 60 million photos per day) creates enormous pressure and an expectation to continuously create images that stand out in a crowd, of well 60 million.
I do however try my very best to entirely focus on what I am doing and what projects we have on at any given time. Ultimately, I believe in monitoring success by happy clients, successful campaigns, and bookings. As amazing it is to get social media recognition - I see this more of a gentle indication that we are on the right path as opposed to a sign of success.
-Can you describe your creative process? What do you look for when creating a shoot and do?
My process begins at 3am in the morning, when the world is quiet, I can think clearly and my creative brain kicks in. I often send messages to my team, by daybreak, we have great excitement over our air waves.
Creative conversations will start flying around 5am.
I look for concept and story line, I am often inspired by poetry, books, music, myths and legends. I look for the “make-believe”, seeing an image in my minds eye, and then creating the visual representatives of that - the story will then transform and develop from there.
I don’t shoot real life, I’m not an enormous fan of real life. Photography is my escape into a world of wonder and magic. A world of enchantment… where stories are always grand.
My Team. The people I work with are creative powerhouses. We are a very small team of focused creatives. Mostly however, I look for like-minded people, creatives who share my design aesthetics. People from my tribe who can take an idea and concept and transform it into something BIG. I never work in large teams.
I look for very strong character driven women for models. Women that are beautiful but fierce. I like strength in my images.
-You have to have a favorite artist in mind that drives your creativity or inspires you, who is it?
Jack Vettriano. His work feeds my soul. I can spend hours searching though his paintings, imagining stories and subtexts in the overall mood of his work. You can feel tension, emotion, love, hate, sadness, seduction, loneliness, youth. I feel like his narratives tell 10 000 stories, each of them different from the viewers perspective and life experiences.
-How would you describe yourself as a person & artist?
A little peculiar perhaps. Upside down in Wonderland comes to mind. As a person, quiet and reserved, a little too serious at times - most times really. I tend to have strong opinions. A dreamer, a boho flower child with a rock n roll soul with a constant urge to travel the word with my camera and a backpack.
As an artist, constantly striving, a fierce workaholic. I do not lead anything that resembles a “normal” life.
-How did you know you wanted to be a photographer?
The short answer is, I didn’t. This creative craft came to me later in my career. I have been a Creative Director for most of my life. A few years ago, I was working on a print publication, where we had to produce a fashion shoot. I took one look at this cool photographer, who spent his days outdoors, creating amazing images, and thought that this looked like a very good way to spend my time.
Initially I was only going to be more of a hobbyist. However through a series of life changing events, my Photography took on a whole energy of its own. In hindsight I feel so strongly that I could never produce the work my team and I create, had I not had those years working as a Creative Director, and the work experiences that I was lucky enough to enjoy over that time. I believe photography came to me at the right point in my career.
I do however feel I am at the beginning of this journey and cannot wait to see how my work changes and expands over the next years.
-Do you have a favorite photographers who inspire you? Why is that?
I am totally and completely obsessed with the work of Sarah Moon and Paolo Roversi. Their use of color and the images they create are hauntingly beautiful and stay with you forever. Tim Burton’s story-telling narrative, simply takes my breath away.
-In the artistic world of photographers, do you see yourself not only trying to achieve your perfect shoot but also being known for your work?
All I honestly want in this life - is to create amazing images, work with talented people, and have happy nice clients who I love. With regards to the world of photographers, it is extraordinary to be recognized for what you do, but again as mentioned before - this is perhaps more of an indication that we are“on the right path”. I do not work for anyone else other than my clients, my team and myself. We focus strictly on what we are doing and creating.
-If you could shoot an editorial anywhere in the world, where would you go? Why is that?
Eze on the French Riviera. The entanglement of the cobbled streets which lead down secret alleyways into hidden squares, with an internal vista of blue ocean skies, makes for a striking backdrop. I can almost imagine walking at night, lantern in hand, down candle lit enchanted pathways, passing Nietzsche, Yeats, Monet, Picasso, Fitzgerald or Hemingway laughing loudly after an evening in one of the small pubs, winding their way merrily down the hill back to their residence. All of whom have spent time in this extraordinary place.
-What was the main reason that you decided to become a photographer?
After working behind a computer for 16 years, getting up at 3 am and watching the sunrise, while balanced on 6ft ladders, seemed like a very good way to spend time. I can honestly say now, that in fact it is the perfect way to spend time. I feel like I have finally found my way in this world, and it was up a ladder!
-Tell me about your latest shoot. What was your vision when you created it?
We have the most amazingly exciting shoots coming up and in production. One of them is a series call Sirens, which is re-imagined Neptune's wooden angels, figureheads in the front of shipwrecked ships, that have come to life and continue to stand guard over their long forgotten vessel.
A project with a mix of digital and 8x10 polaroid. A beauty shoot inspired by the original Grimms fairytales.
-To be a photographer, you had to undergo a lot of struggles. What was the most difficult obstacle for you when putting together a shoot?
The barrier to entry was getting people to work with me and to trust my vision. This was a totally different industry for me, and not one person was even remotely interested in what I had to offer. I was lucky enough to convince one stylist to work with me on a project - only under the proviso that if she hated my work, I would get another photographer to shoot it. Fortunately it went well - and then I simply went out to work with the best people I possible could. Winning them over one by one on each given shoot. In South Africa, this is a very closed industry - competition is unforgiving. You need to be on your A game all the time.
-Does your personal life ever effect how you compose your shoots or do you have a set schedule/ formula that you follow? What is it exactly?
Currently my schedule is a 7 days a week and min 12-16 hour days. There is no milk in the house, and I’m living a little too much off spoonfull's of peanut butter at midnight. I am hoping to try and find more balance this year.
Yoga is helping.
-Who excites you the most (Celebrity) & why?
Audrey Tautou and Kat Von D. Both these women are interesting in a very non traditional sense. The rolls they have chosen to play in life is so undeniably inspiring. I feel they walk the line between strength, femininity, success, humbleness and just downright take no prisoners. It’s wonderful to see women who are unapologetically non-traditional.
-If you had to pass on a suggestion for someone starting out in photography, what would you tell them?
Focus on your own work. Put your nose to the grindstone and work. Work harder, and harder and then work even harder than anyone else. Find your tribe, collaborate with like minded souls. Experiment and most importantly work on client relationships. Relationships are what build careers. Always be nice and support other photographers. There is so much work in this world. There is enough for everyone.
Always, always be kind!
-How is your style of photography different from any other photographers?
My style is ever evolving and changing. I tend to use a lot of color in my photography at the moment. But perhaps that will change with different projects. I do love colour though :)
-What are your world-dominating goal.
To continue to work in Photography, get paid for doing something I love so much, and of course travel the world and live an adventurous life - with nice, amazing clients and a creative team that is insanely cool.
What more could one ask for…. Perhaps to work in NYC or Paris would also be amazing. For a photographer hailing from Africa, working in NYC or Paris is most certainly the definition of world domination. :)

Post Production Software Engineer
Collaborating in really real-time
Is editing post production?
In the industry of film, videography, and photography, post production editing, or simply post-production, is the third and final step in creating a film. It follows pre-production and production and refers to the work, usually editing, that needs to be completed after shooting the film.
Credits were done with a service called Endcrawl for the scroll itself, which was a company Alex’s brother, Shannon discovered. As an editor, I was really happy with the ease of working with the credits. When the project has been completed, the last step is to make this available for consumption by the end user. For others, it could be posting to an “Online Video Platform†(OVP) such as YouTube or Vimeo. Another option is making the project available to other outlets like such as HBO, Hulu or Netflix.

How do I mount a bin file in Windows 10?
The . bin extension is commonly used with CD and DVD backup image files and certain anti-virus programs. The BIN files contain binary code that is used by the different applications on your computer. In some cases, the BIN files are saved in basic binary format and can be opened with a text editor.
Unfortunately, not all services can support this integration. Adobe Creative Cloud is a set of services and applications offered by Adobe Systems that gives subscribers access to a collection of software solutions used for graphic design, video editing, web development, and photography. It also includes a set of mobile applications and some optional post production software mac cloud services at an additional cost.
Third, if a distributor has paid a significant advance to secure distribution rights, it has a strong financial incentive to sell the film. Promotional expenses include the cost of preparing posters, one-sheets, trailers and advertising. These expenses are limited to direct out-of-pocket expenses actually spent on behalf of the film.
This gives users access to this node-based effects compositing tool from within the Media Composer user interface.
If you have downloaded .bin and .cue files and you are sure that they are video content, then this article will tell you your options on how to play them.
Other aspects of an actor’s business may include post-production edits and promotion of the film.

Perhaps there isn't much talk about Shared Projects because it primarily appeals to a user-type that doesn't hop on the internet and start snappin' and grammin'. And ELEMENTS Cube, a mobile appliance for the on-location use, supports up to 16 drives in a small factor chassis, providing full editing and data management capabilities on the go. Seems like a team could easy set up a system like this up, assuming the media management system worked. The projects are small and easily updated, as are the database files.
What is a post production schedule?
Post Production Supervisors are responsible for the post production process, during which they maintain clarity of information and good channels of communication between the producer, editor, supervising sound editor, the facilities companies (such as film labs, CGI studios and negative cutters) and the production
FEATURED VIDEO
Everything has worked fine the way it is, but let’s look at cars as a good example. I would compare this update of Media Composer to going from a Chevy to a Tesla. The release of Media Composer 2019(.6) (MC2019), is one that Avid has been pushing for a while now.
By no means however, does the rough cut look or feel like the final video. The key to remember with the rough cut is that it should be an ordered assemblage of the shots that will be used in the final video. If you’re having a difficult time choosing between two takes of the same shot, it’s okay to place them next to each other in the timeline. In the case of a documentary or an interview, you should utilize the production notes and the paper transcript of the footage. The script was written as a guide to establish the story that will be presented through the video.
How much does it cost to distribute a film?
Online editing is a post-production linear video editing process that is performed in the final stage of a video production. It occurs after offline editing. For the most part, online editing has been replaced by video editing software that operate on non-linear editing systems (N.L.E).
If you know that Google Docs is limited to a limited number of users, I think the limit of users who can concurrently edit the document is set to about 15 people. I haven't looked into it for quite some time, but I know there's a limit. Collaborative editing is a process of writing and editing documents or projects by more than one person. Collaborative editing software tools like Firepad and Textflow as well as services like Google Docs facilitate collaborativelyediting individual computer files by multiple users. While these sophisticated approaches enable the best user experience, a basic collaborative editor can also be created in a client–server model.

This amazing Monaco Hyperlapse film took two months to shoot
[embedded content]
Timelapse and hyperlapse aficionado Kirill Neiezhmakov has been creating some pretty amazing films over the last few years. He’s travelled all over the place from Hong Kong to the romantic streets of Rome and Prague. In his newest film, Kirill takes us on a whirlwind tour of the Principality of Monaco.
Kirill actually shot the sequences for this film a while ago. In August and September 2017, to be precise. It was finally edited together in August of this year. DIYP spoke with Kirill to get a little more information on how it was all made.
One of my friends, who live near Monaco in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, suggested some time ago that go there and make a timelapse about Monaco. At the time, though, I was busy and forgot about it. Then in August, I had free time and was thinking about where I could go to shoot. And right at the same time he sent me a message again.
I thought: why not? Monaco is beautiful place and I don’t need to pay for accommodation because I can stay in his apartment. I went there with my wife. It was trip for both shooting and pleasure (his apartment was 3 min walk from sea).
Monaco is often lauded as one of the most beautiful places on earth, and Kirill’s video certainly seems to back that up. He told us about the things he saw while he was there.
During our trip we visited not only Monaco, but also Nice, Cannes and other places on the French Riviera. But the most Monaco made the biggest impression. There were a lot of beautiful places in that very small country. It has many hills which are make for good shooting locations. You don’t need to search for rooftops with nice view. That view is almost everywhere.
Although there were some difficulties. Monaco, like many parts of the world, has areas that are off limits without permission, especially if you want to use a tripod or slider – which are often essential for things like timelapse.
One difficult thing there, was shooting from a tripod near Casino Monte-Carlo area and Prince’s Palace. But we had a good friend from Monaco locals He helped us with getting a permission. We spent 4 or 5 days for shooting in Monaco, found few vantage points there and got beautiful material.
When it comes to gear, Kirill told DIYP that he uses a Canon 60D, 70D and 5DS to create his timelapses with Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, Canon 17-55mm f/2.8, Canon 70-200mm f/4L, Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L and Samyang 8mm f/3.5 lenses. Kirill then processes and compiles all the images together using Lightroom, LRTimelapse and After Effects.
It sure takes a lot of work to produce timelapse and hyperlapse sequences for films like this, both to actually shoot it and then do all the colour grading and editing. But when you get a final result that looks like this, I think we can all agree that it’s worth it.
If you want to check out more of Kirill’s Hyperlapse videos, head on over to his YouTube channel.

The smoke settles to reveal CHO JINWOO, also known as PARKER, a 149 year old vampire of Sunseong. He is a private investigator and informant who appears to be adept in hand-to-hand combat, compulsion, and reconnaissance --- but like most things in Sunseong, there must be more to him than meets the eye.
FACECLAIM: Min Yoongi, bts
APPEARANCE:
The blonde haired male has an eyebrow piercing, heavily pierced ears, a vertical labaret, and two full sleeves of tattoos on his arms.
BIOGRAPHY:
June 21, 1868: Cho Jinwoo is born to a family of merchants. His upbringing is fairly unremarkable, with no significant occurrences.
1872: The boy’s father begins to show Jinwoo the tricks of the trade from a young age, having the boy help in the shop and observe negotiations with business partners. He appears to be a quick learner, soaking information up like a sponge and applying it in his own life in small ways.
September 16, 1879: Jinwoo’s father’s ship disappears en route from China. There is no sign of the ship nor its contents, and the crew is assumed to be dead. The resulting financial blow is enough for the family to have to sell the business and most of their belongings in order to pay off their debts. The broken family moves to a modest district in Seoul, his mother has a hard time adjusting to the class change. Jinwoo grows more frustrated with the situation he finds himself in as he begins taking on more dangerous work to make ends meet.
1880: Jinwoo’s mother develops a drinking habit. The alcohol causes her to waste away in the house, often arguing with Jinwoo. Her habit plunges them further into poverty, and finally after a final, explosive argument the boy decides to leave home and lie about his age in order to join the military.
1881: The military is far from what Jinwoo expected. The unpaid wages due to the introduction of a new, lavishly funded Japanese-trained faction of the military prove to make tensions rise between the soldiers and the government. Jinwoo especially grows resentful, and he’s among the first people to start whispering about mutiny. Linking up with other soldiers, Jinwoo himself did a good deal of the recruiting and information gathering for the impending attack.
1882: Tensions reach a boiling point after sand and rotten rice are found in the soldiers’ rations one night. The revolt results in the death of a Japanese general and several government officials. Rather than stay and face execution Jinwoo disappears into the forests and takes his first opportunity to leave the country that he feels has given him nothing but strife. He makes his way to America in the hopes of integrating into modernized culture. October 25, 1887: He awakens buried alive in a cemetery in Upstate New York. He has little memory of what occurred, but there are vague images of a night spent with a strange, yet achingly beautiful blonde woman. His throat burns with thirst as he claws his way out of a shallow grave, terrifying the groundskeeper. Acting on instinct, Jinwoo latches onto the man’s neck and drains him of blood. The male immediately knows what he has become, because of rumors that he had heard back in his hometown about similar creatures that prowled the night. 1904: The male is just getting the hang of his abilities, testing his limits, and having fun. He cares little for hiding what he is, yet makes no effort to go public either. Word reaches him of the October Massacre, but due to being removed from the situation it quickly becomes an afterthought. He continues to study through the years, migrating to different parts of the globe and working as a private investigator on the side in order to fund his lifestyle. 2004: After so long being spent abroad, Jinwoo decides to return to Korea under the identity of Parker Cho, a Korean American. He is disgusted by what he finds when he returns, his people having been reduced to a criminal underground cowering in fear of an invisible Queen and a power hungry Lord.. He feels the same rage boiling within him that he felt when he was a teenager in the army, and he decides to take matters into his own hands. The male begins searching for information on both the Queen and the Lord, quietly assembling extensive files of hard-earned information on both. 2013: Parker joins the ranks of the Queen, acting as a spy on the Lord. Little known to her he’s doing the same for the Lord. He maintains his status as a double agent, feeding each side a mix of information and misinformation until he’s certain he’s got enough influence from the shadows.. His goal is to bring both sides down from the inside, though the progress is slower than he anticipated. 2016: an unexpected development occurs when the Lord and the Queen meet and kill each other in combat. Parker finds himself dissatisfied with the results, as the full scope of his plans were unable to come to fruition. The chaos that ensues allows him to slip beneath the radar once again. 2017: The male works on small projects now in order to support himself as he has returned to the drawing board, trying to decide what direction he should go in now.
CHARACTERIZATION:
Flexible: Parker is extremely adaptable to the people and things around him. It doesn’t take him long to get in the groove to mirror a conversation partner, adjust a plan to account for new data, or change his angle of thought in an argument.
Independent: Parker has always been the type to value providing for himself. He is a big advocate of choice, freedom, and personal power so anything that attempts to destroy those things is something that is met with extreme distaste. Easy-Going: It takes quite a bit to genuinely upset Parker, as his extended existence has caused him to become apathetic to the trivial matters that most humans concern themselves with.
Manipulative: For better or for worse, Parker truly understands how people work. This lends itself to exploiting the weaknesses and judgement errors of others.
Aggressive: Despite his typically mild demeanor, there’s still an aspect of Parker that is unnerving. This is due to the repressed rage from his lifetime that he habors. This rage can manifest in bouts of aggression including rapid mood swings, violent outbursts, verbal abuse/insults, and frequent physical fights.
Disloyal: Parker’s loyalties lie only with the people, institutions, and ideas that serve him as long as they do just that—serve him. He can easily be described as fickle, as he will go to any and every means necessary to achieve his end.
SPECIALTIES:
Hand to Hand Combat Rank I (20 points): Parker was trained in Taekwondo upon entering the military, additionally he has combat experience. The male is also frequently in scraps because of his mouth, so he is no stranger to street fighting either. Compulsion Rank II (40 points): While he was alive, Parker was an seasoned negotiator with a natural charisma that drew nearly anybody to his side. Now that he has been turned into a vampire, this effect has multiplied tenfold because of his ability to attract others on a supernatural level, and because of an intimate knowledge of the psyche. While it’s not mind control, so long as he has direct eye contact with his target for three seconds, it can be quite difficult to say no to his suggestion, especially if one has weak will power. Typically the effects of compulsion last up to thirty minutes, depending on the task at hand. The longer it is being used though, the more it starts to take a mental toll on Parker.
Reconnaissance Rank II (40 points): Having done recon throughout his military career and having over 100 years to practice after that, Parker has fine tuned the art of information gathering through multiple means including trailing, hacking, and surveying. Admittedly he can only do so much on his own, so often he enlists ghouls and thralls to help him achieve the surveillance network that he needs at the time.
