obsessed with how jaime looms like a spectre over the characters and the reader alike in agot and to an even greater extent in acok. you've actually witnessed him firsthand a few times with characters like jon, tyrion and sansa, but most of him is just the golden-haired man haunting bran's dreams, terrifying him, tyrion's brave, strong, impulsive brother who has to be saved, the kingslayer of the smallfolk, the one whose incest and kingslaying has brought down the wrath of the gods upon them, ned's jaime, who is vile and never to be trusted, not worthy of any empathy, the kingslayer that is more idea than person for the younger characters like jon, arya and sansa, the kingslayer that theon almost crossed blades with, his chance for glory (which...okay theon...) the kingslayer whose vile deeds don't erase the fact that he is a knight for stannis, the kingslayer who murdered daenerys' father. he's mentioned in so many conversations. cerwyn mentions him to bran and he feels like he's falling again, renly talks about him and cersei with catelyn in front of brienne, brienne and catelyn mention him in their conversation when they're going to riverrun, robb and tyrion and tywin are all thinking about him. grrm does such a good job at just establishing his presence and significance (not only in the narrative but in a meta way as well, a hint for what's to come) in this world, which just elevates that scene when cat and brienne go down to the dungeons to meet him to an insane level.

A Man Without Honor
Wow I haven’t watched Game of Thrones since November.
So obviously the perfect time to get back into it is a week before midterms. Because logic.
Barely remember what’s happening at this point in the story and who some characters are. I reread my last couple posts. It kind of makes sense. But we’ll see how this goes.
I forgot that the opening is 10 minutes long. I always think of this, but there is so much land beyond the wall. And it’s terrifying. Theon, you’re way too violent. Ygritte has a point about the whole stealing land thing. I... don’t understand Tywin... I said it a few episodes ago, but sometimes he seems like he has a heart... but then he’s evil again... now he’s letting Arya eat mutton... What is he doing? What’s his plan? Unless... wanting to see if it’s poisoned... Oh no please don’t let it be poisoned. Arya’s so tempted with that knife... girl don’t do it. Not yet. Did I forget that Tywin knew that Arya’s a girl? I guess I forgot that. “You remind me of my daughter” EW. He can tell she’s not a commoner. God. This whole situation just terrifies me, I feel like he knows she’s a Stark and is just playing with her. I’m constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop. I really like the Hound. He’s so complicated. He knows what’s right, is protecting Sansa, but also loves killing and isn’t exactly a good person. “You know nothing, Jon Snow.” So that’s where that line comes from. Robb, baby, I’m happy for you. You found a girl you like. But remember your mom made a promise... A promise that sucks, but yeah. Don’t get too attached. But also I know the odds of you surviving to marry that girl are slim. I feel so bad for Maester Luwin. Good on Ygritte for escaping though. Oh poor Sansa’s having nightmares. Oh and she woke up in a pool of her own blood. I know that feel. Ok well, I don’t know the feel of now having to bear the children of the crybaby who killed your father, but the pool of blood yeah. I love that Shae’s looking out for her. BUT FOR SOME REASON THE HOUND ISN’T IN THIS CASE. HOUND. WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Yeah well, Cersei, Robert would flee from the birthing room because he knew the kid always wasn’t his. Yeah, well, Cersei, Jaime wanted to be in the birthing room because Jaime wants to see his kids. Not sure if I’ve said this in these posts yet, but Jaime looks like Prince Charming from Shrek and it freaks me out a bit. I was just about to say that Alton seems like a sweet kid, that I hope he ends up ok. But then Jaime, of all people, not even the Starks or their soldiers, kills him. Well. He’s smart, I’ll give him that. But now everything sucks. What is the point of this face cage thing? When did Jorah betray Dany before? I don’t remember him betraying her? Does she mean just leaving Dany to get a ship and not being there when the dragons were taken? Or did I miss something? Or are we not supposed to know yet? Did I not say it was one of the undead dudes? I called it. UHHHHHH UNDEAD DUDE HAS CLONES. UHHHHHHHHH UNDEAD DUDE CAN TELEPORT. “He doesn’t listen to me.” Gee, Cersei, I can’t imagine why. I was wondering how Brienne eventually gets shipped with Jaime. I’m guessing Lady Catelyn’s gonna send him away with her watching him or something. I don’t appreciate him calling her a beast. “I’ve never been with any woman but Cersei” OH GOD EW. I LITERALLY JUST CRINGED AND GAGGED. “So in my own way, I have more honor than poor old dear Ned.” NUH UH HE DIDN’T SAY THAT. (Oh and poor Jon since I know from spoilers he’s not even Ned’s kid.) For no reason Amazon just skipped to the next episode... I had to go back. THEON WHAT THE FUCK. WHAT HOW WHY. What the actual fuck.
You know Theon, I’ve been giving you passes. I’ve been like yeah, you were taken from your home, you deserve to be angry. I get it. And the scene a couple episodes ago where he talks to Bran on his bed and it’s more like a big brother talking to his annoying little sibling than a man trying to overthrow a kingdom? That scene was almost cute because that’s what their relationship was. I even nearly typed “Theon, baby, you’re too violent.” earlier because my brain was still thinking of him affectionately to some degree.
But this is way too far. Waaaayyyyy too far. I don’t think that the show has had children die like that yet. Oh god.
Oh Game of Thrones. One of the few things to ever make me say the F-word since I don’t like saying it. But I’ve said it in a few of these posts. Because this show is messed up.
I feel like Amazon skipping to the next episode a few minutes before we saw the bodies was Amazon trying to spare me.

#so much to be said about each of these characters' relationship to jaime #specifically their relationship to jaime before ASOS #the parasocial nature of it #i sometimes forget that bran is literally terrified of jaime #like i blorbofy him so much but then i remember that this is the VILLAIN in bran's life who took everything away from him #regardless of his intentions or reasons or whatever #and then brienne's relationship with the idea of jaime lannister thee kinglsayer is so compelling as well #her being the one in the tent listening to cat and renly talk for the very first time about jaime and cers #and not only the incest but the attempt on bran's life??? #god #GODDDD (via @ghastlywretch)
#then first chapter of asos you have his pov #and you realize how different this man is from everything people said or thought of him in the previous books #he's done what they said but he is more than what he's done (via @musing-and-music)
#it's so damn good #he's been mythologized so much and by the time you get in his head you think you know what to expect #and such narrative whiplash cuz you're like...hang on...do i...love him actually? #near-universally despised mythologized man actually has a complex inner world? #top tier stuff (via @pearly--rose)
#and he's just. jaime. #like his whole thing he killed the boy and he stopped being a man #the kingslayer's a legend. jaime's just jaime (via @ser-zoras)

#grrm *loves* using the missing man technique#stannis in agot. beric and jaime in acok. everyone talks about them - they're basically legends - until finally you see them in the flesh#and they might be underwhelming compared to your expectations or they might be more than you could ever imagine#but of all of them only jaime gets a pov of his own. only jaime we get his actual thoughts and inner self and doubts and fears#not to slight what beric and stannis reveal to their close confidants -#but it's different when you can truly see their core self and loves and fears without having to imagine and fill in what they're not saying#but yes-- the monster the golden man the great yellow beast the legend -- and he's just a man. in the end only a man.#asoiaf#asoiaf meta#jaime lannister#asoiaf themes#tag meta#queue and me we're in this together now
