Your favorite season was always autumn. The change in the leaves, bright in their shift of reds and yellows, gave you a warmth you couldn’t hide from even in the brisk weather. Although the fireflies had long gone from touching the night skies, there was a relaxing atmosphere to seeing just the moon in the sky.
You made a habit of counting the stars when you could. Their glow enamoring you, as though maybe you weren’t truly at home upon this land. Completely lost in thought, you almost disregarded the sound of grass crunching beside you.
“So this is where you go off to.”
His voice wasn’t reprimanding, remaining soft on the edges yet still holding a little curiosity. Your gaze shifted from the spray of light in the night sky to the half-foot next to you.
A slight smile spread on your features upon his presence, something you were never able to fully hide from Chilchuck. As hard as he tried to bite back his own, it still mirrored the one you gave him.
“Did I worry you?” Your tone was genuine, as if you were afraid you had upset him with your disappearance. This had become a common occurrence lately, especially with the change in season. Not that Chilchuck blamed you, the night sky around this time was always a sight to see. He quickly shook the thought from his mind that you were an even better one.
“Nah, but I guess you did make me wonder where you always go around this time. I see why you’d find this nice.” Chilchuck stepped closer to where you made yourself comfortable, pulling his eyes away from your own to stare at the moon.
The milky light caused the gray strands in his hair to almost glow in a way, something that always made your chest warm.
“Come sit, then?” And who was he to refuse that sweet chime of your voice, pulling him in as much he wished he could deny it? As much as he wished he could forget just how much you had worked your way into his heart over your time together. Yet, like a moth to a flame, he situated himself beside you.
For a brief while, there was nothing but a comfortable silence between the two of you. Eventually, you sent a ripple through it.
“Work treating you well?” It was something to cause him to speak to you again, an attempt to hear his voice in the calm of the night around you. Fortunately, it worked.
“You could say that,” he sighed, hand reaching to scratch the back of his head for a moment in thought. Chilchuck’s work within the half-foot guild he had started was always something you enjoyed hearing about. Being a part of it yourself, you couldn’t help but look up to him in that regard. “What about you? Shop doing well?”
The last few weeks you had found yourself busy with a bustling shop you had opened, something you’ve always wanted. Chilchuck had offered pieces of advice you appreciated more than you could explain, only furthering your fondness for him.
“It’s been busy, but… good, really.” You replied, trying to keep yourself from sounding too exhausted. Honestly, you’ve been slinking off during the evening just to recuperate like this, but you couldn’t find yourself disappointed that he had found out.
The moon seemed to rise even further into the sky, once again catching your attention away from the half-foot beside you. If you let yourself, you could gaze at him the entire night.
The sentiment was shared in the quiet between you, Chilchuck trying to keep his eyes from your profile. There was something about the peaceful lilt of the corners of your lips and the way you looked so at home like this. That pull he tried so hard to fight against was back, and was only made worse when you turned to catch his gaze.
There were so many things hanging in the air, questions and words unsaid between you both. Once again, you made an effort to break the silence.
“Something wrong?”
Yes, Chilchuck wanted to say. Yes, I’m falling in love with you and you keep making it so damn difficult to pull away.
Do you even know what you’re doing at this point? Are you aware that you look so stupidly attractive in this lighting and it makes him long for something between you two he doesn’t deserve?
Opening his mouth to speak, all that he could muster was a simple, “Nothing.”
The growing tension was going to suffocate him at this point, and it wasn’t going to spare you either. Yet, instead of trying to say something to quell the silence between you for a third time, you leaned in to him instead.
The kiss was soft, chaste and quick but still managed to rattle his chest. Pulling away, you didn’t get far before he smashed his lips back onto yours, chasing after that moment a little longer. Instead of berating himself for giving away the affection he’s held in so long for you, he let out a deep sigh as if he could finally breathe again.
Finally pulling away, you rested your head on his shoulder, basking in that gentle warmth buzzing in your cheeks. You knew he wasn’t great at expressing how he felt, but for once, you didn’t doubt that there was something between you. Instead, you laughed, a breathy one, tickling the crook of his neck.
Chilchuck tried to ignore the flutter of his heart at that, instead placing his lips on the crown of your head and grumbling out playfully in reply. “What’s so funny? I know I’m rusty, but you don’t have to laugh.”
Threading your fingers with his own, you hummed. “I just think that it’s funny that it took me this long to work up the guts to kiss you.”
Cracking a smile, he felt a sense of relief that he wasn’t the only one who felt that way.
