Single Dad Toji who spots you at the public park with your son while he was on a job. Your yoga pants perfectly hugging your hips, your ponytail poking through the back hole of your baseball cap. Your voice, sweet as candy when you call your son’s name. All of it distracting him from his mission.
Single Dad Toji who makes quick work of his assignment so he can circle back to the playground to find you. Only you’re gone. Not to worry, you’ll be back. You strike him as the kind of girl who has a routine, he’ll try again next week.
Single Dad Toji who surprises Megumi with a visit, asking if he wants to go to the park and play? Excited, little six year old Fushiguro grabs his baseball mitt and hops in the car, ready to play catch and spend real time with his dad.
Single Dad Toji who is the picture-perfect father, hoping you’ll be around to see it. He plays catch, tag, even teaches Megumi a little about fighting. Then he spots you out of the corner of his eye. You’re back, this time in a different pair of yoga pants, your hair in a messy bun poking out the back of your cap, and a cropped shirt that his hands are dying to roam under.
Single Dad Toji who clears his throat, “Megumi, you wanna head over to the playground now? Maybe join some of the other kids?” “Okay, Dad!” He watches Megumi’s little legs bolt toward the colorful structure as he shoves his hands in his pockets and strolls in your direction, ready to convince you to join him in his car while the kids are distracted.
Single Dad Toji who sits next to you. You weren’t paying attention at first but when his herculean figure sits down inches away from you, your eyes do a double take. He’s gorgeous. Is it even legal for him to be here? Don’t you have to be tired and ugly with a dad bod to bring your kid to the park? This guy looks like he just came from a weightlifting competition and he could pick you up with his pinky.
Single Dad Toji who deeply murmurs, “Hey.” knowing he won’t have to say much more to win you over. You might be attractive but he can see you staring at him in his peripheral. The battle is won before it even begins. Your mesmerized face eventually manages to whisper ‘Hello” in response. “You come here often.” “Y-yeah, every week. You new to the area?” Knew it, you do keep a strict schedule. This will be fun. “You could say that. I don’t get out much.”
Single Dad Toji who smiles when you ask him, “Which one is yours?” He points out his son who’s his spitting image and pretends to not know which kid is yours. He’s just waiting for your name so he can do a thorough background check on you tonight. He wants to know everything. Who’s your kid’s father, how long you dated, are you married, divorced, where you work, Toji is nothing if not detailed when it comes to researching his prey and even if you don’t have a hit on your head, he's sure as hell hitting you from behind.
Single Dad Toji who feels his chest swell when you ask the very question he’d been waiting for, “So where's Megumi’s mom?” He’s got you now. You’re in his snare and he’s not gonna let you go until he’s done toying with you, which you better believe won't be any time soon.
Single Dad Toji who has you bobbing between his legs in the back seat of his SUV. The car spacious enough for you both, but cramped enough to keep you against him at all times. Your pretty mouth struggled to stretch around him and your throat is having an even harder time. However, that doesn’t stop him from grabbing you by your hair and shoving you down on him. You’re his little slut now, there’s no turning back. His hips buck up into your mouth as you gag and cough. Lewd wet sounds swirl through the silence making him twitch in your mouth. As much as he wants to be inside of you, he’s enjoying his sadistic game. He could do this to you for hours but he doesn’t know how long he has till Megumi notices he’s missing. With that thought, he releases you but wipes the drool from your mouth all over your whore face before pulling you up on the seat so he can piledrive into you.
Single Dad Toji who has you moaning and screaming as he stretches you wide. You’d think after giving birth, this would be easier but you swear the doctor must’ve sewn you up to be like new cause you feel like a virgin as he pummels into you. His hips crash into your backside so hard it not only rocks you, leaving you unsteady, but it makes the whole car shake. Surely someone is gonna tap on the window to let you know how obvious you’re being.
Single Dad Toji who makes you cum twice before he allows himself to release. He wants to get back to Megumi but he wants to see you again. He needs to feel how your pretty pink insides squeeze around him while you make demonic orgasming sounds. You’re sexy as hell and he hasn’t had nearly enough time to explore you yet. He finishes with harsh slaps to your ass, turning it bright red with his strength before he chokes your neck. He can feel how you quiver around him as his seed pumps into your hole, possibly creating a sibling for Megumi.
Single Dad Toji who continues to hold you by the neck, still on his cock, while he puts his number in your phone. He whispers instructions into your ear to send him a photo of your soaked underwear when you get home. He wants to see his cum dripping out of you and making a mess of your underwear. As he’s telling you this he pulls you up and dips two fingers in your cunt to scoop out some of his spend and shove it in your mouth. You hood your eyes and suck on the thick digits obediently, wishing he was inside you again. When he withdraws his fingers he gives you two light slaps on the cheek, “Good slut. Same time next week?”
Single Dad Toji who has you in the backseat of his car every week like clockwork. You're addicted to each other. All your mind thinks about is him and how he plays with you. You want him more than you’ve ever wanted anyone in your entire life. He knows your body and what makes you tick as if you’d been dating for a decade. He’s an expert in knowing precisely what to say to make you feel like his filthy sex slave, ready to serve him and all his desires. This week he has you wearing the remote vibrator. He turned it on the second he got to the park. You were still driving and it took you by surprise. Your son asked what ‘that humming sound’ is. You played it off as a fly that must be buzzing around and opened the door for him. Your son sprints to the jungle gym and plays with his new best friend, Megumi. As you walk towards his father, Toji, he pulls out his phone and increases the intensity of the vibe, the asshole. You stop dead in your tracks, unable to move from the pulsing that had you silently screaming for mercy.
Single Dad Toji who approaches you and grabs you by the arm, pulling you into his SUV. He strips off your pants and spits on your rear. “Wrong hole, Toji.” “No, it’s not. Your other hole is occupied. It’s time to take this one out for a test drive.” He drops another wad of spit on your back door then sinks his finger in and rims you, stretching you as you wait on all fours anticipating what’s to come while writhing from the shockwaves of the vibrator. Toes curling, core clenching, legs shaking, you're already overloaded before he sinks his fat tip into your rear. It’s uncomfortable at first but then as you loosen up, your inner demon surfaces. Only two strokes in and you’re cumming all over his back seat. Toji smirks, realizing this is gonna be fun. He begins to pound into your cute little hole, making you scream and shout filthy things. You chant his name, promising to be his little toy and do whatever he wants. He rocks into your A-spot so hard that you convulse, unable to speak as your eyes roll in your head.
Single Dad Toji who can’t bring himself to stop, even after your body collapses. It’s too good, too tight, too warm. His shaft tingles as it rubs against the vibrator still whirring away in your other cavity. “T-t-toji, p…please. Mercy.” He chuckles at your orison. Like he’s gonna give you a break. Completely disregarding your plea he hammers home, hips snapping so hard you’re dizzy and have gone blind from pleasure. If you weren’t screaming before, you’re definitely screaming now. People probably think you’re being murdered but he can’t stop himself, he keeps pounding away until he breaks. Cum shoots out and paints your interior. He finally stills and notices that your body is in a crumpled ball, lifeless except for the twitch in your leg. A buzzing sound can be heard over his heavy panting when he realizes he never stopped the vibe. “Oh, sorry babe.” When he turns it off he sees your body go limp as if you took your last breath and knows he’s worn you out. You lazily roll over and stare up at him, your eyes constantly finding their way over to his mouth and that sexy scar he has on the corner of his lips.
Single Dad Toji who grabs you at the base of your jaw and pulls you up to his face. His lips collide with yours in a breath-stealing kiss. You’re his perfect woman, his little slut, his secret whore, his obsession. When you get out of his car you’re about to pull away to pretend you’re just friendly parents bumping into each other when he sees how another man is watching your ass. You straighten the brim of your hat and move to walk toward the playground when Toji’s massive hand grabs your waist and pulls you into him. You look up at him shocked, then he drapes his heavy arm across your shoulders while he stares daggers into the man who now pretends to be watching his daughter lovingly. “What’s this?” you ask, surprised that Toji wants to show affection where the boys might see. “You’re mine. Others need to know.”
Single Dad Toji who doesn’t want to be single anymore. He has you blushing like a giddy schoolgirl as you walk over to the bench and sit together. Your shoulder tucked into his armpit and his hand squeezing your bicep, he can’t get over the idea of making things public. You’re his, officially, and it makes him smile to himself as the two of you watch your kids become stepbrothers.

The Caged Bird Still Sings Part 21
Wow! It always amazes me when story gets past 20 chapters. It makes it ending even harder. But ending it is. I completed the final chapter yesterday. It will have 24 chapters and then it one of the other fics I'm currently working will replace it.
Chrissy makes good on her promise to blow each of the kids' minds.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8 Part 9 Part 10 Part 11 Part 12 Part 13 Part 14 Part 15 Part 16 Part 17 Part 18 Part 19 Part 20
~
By invite only is what Chrissy said. Holy shit. There were actual famous people here and Steve was freaking out.
Steve, Robin, and his kids were picked up in a shiny, black limo and taken to Wayne’s ranch. There the amphitheater was set up for Corroded Coffin to play. As evidenced by the black and gold drum kit with their logo slapped on the bass drum.
There were actors and other musicians there. Some pretty big names too. So that got Dustin and Mike sorted. They were freaking out and geeking out about each new person they spotted.
Then Max was tugging on Steve’s arm. “Steve. Steve I can’t believe it. He’s here.”
Steve looked over to see a man, maybe a little bit older than he was standing there talking to Jeff’s dad. He didn’t look like much, but the way Max was vibrating next to him, he knew the guy was famous in a way only see would recognize.
“That’s Steve Caballero,” she sighed wistfully. “When I was out in Cali, he was pioneering the skateboard scene. He’s so awesome.”
And then it hit him. What Chrissy met when she said that she could do something special for each of the kids with one event. And this was Max’s.
“Come on,” Steve said brightly, tugging on her arm. “We’re going to go say hello.”
Max stared at him in shock and tried to tell him she wasn’t going to do that, when Steve yanked on her arm and lead him over to Mr. Lawrence and Steve Caballero.
“Hey, you’re Steve right?” he said with his most charming smile. When the guy nodded, he continued, “My friend here is a huge fan. This Max Mayfield.”
Steve looked her up and down. “Long or standard?”
“Standard,” Max said immediately. “I’ve been working on my kickflip and I’ve almost got it down.”
Steve C. raised an eyebrow. “Where do you go to skate around here?”
Max chatted excitedly with him. “Doing street is the best I can hope for in Hicksville, but there is a quarry nearby where I go to practice my bigger stuff.”
“You should really show me while I’m in town...” Steve C. said as Steve wandered off.
Will was talking to a man and woman and so Steve started walking over that direction.
Will spotted him and pulled him over. “This is Stephen Cosgrove and Robin James. They do the Serendipity books.”
Steve turned his head to the side as he thought about it for a moment. “Is that the one with big pink and green sea dragon or whatever?”
Stephen smiled. “Sea dragon is a much nicer term than sea monster, but yes. That’s us.”
Steve snapped his fingers. “I’ve been meeting a lot of Steves today. First Steve Caballero who skateboards and now you.”
Robin and Stephen shared a glance.
“I’m a Steve too.”
They both “ooh’ed” and nodded.
“This young man was telling us that he wanted to illustrate children’s books,” Robin J. said with a smile.
Steve ruffled Will’s hair. “He’s really good, he was even teaching me a thing or two over the summer.”
“There’s children’s illustration exhibit in Indy while we’re here,” Stephen said brightly. “I think he’d be very interested in seeing it.”
Will looked up at Steve, hopeful.
Steve ruffled Will’s hair again. “We’ll have to ask your mom, but yeah that sounds great. If I can get the information from you.”
And both Stephen and Robin J. hurried to do just that with Robin J. handing Will her personal business card. “When you get a little older, give me a call,” she said with a wink.
Will waved dorkily at them and then let Steve lead him away. “This was so cool, Steve. Thanks for inviting me. I’m more of a ‘The Clash’ fan, but meeting my heroes is so mind blowing and to go to see the exhibit would be the icing on the cake.”
Steve smiled, putting his arm around the kid. “We’ll have to see. Your mom is still mad at me for the whole Eddie is a sugar daddy fiasco.”
“Which is bullshit,” Will huffed. “Even Jonathan thinks Eddie is sweet and this was before you got him that camera. As he pointed out Eddie was out of town and a lot of the gifts were cute and not over the top expensive.”
“I wish Jonathan had been successful,” Steve said dryly, “and the whole mess with Scoops would have been avoided.”
“Yeah,” Will said dourly. “Hop is still mad at her for the whole assault thing. Eddie was taking care of you and yes, she might have not have known who it was at the time, but the fact that you could come and go as you pleased, you were able to spend the money on whatever you wanted, and were really happy... like she should have let it go.”
They went to go find Mike and Dustin. It wasn’t long to find them, they were chatting away with Brian and Gareth.
Brian threw his arms out and cried. “Stevie! The man of the hour! Eddie was excited when you agreed to come out to this.”
Steve smiled at the bassist. “Like I could ever turn down a chance to see you guys play live. I did like the music when I heard it the first time.”
“Eddie told us about your musical indoctrination,” Gareth said with a huff of laughter. “You actually went out and bought heavy metal albums of your own accord, so I’ll give you that. Because I always assumed you liked us live because you liked the outfit Eddie wore.”
Steve quickly covered an ear each of Dustin and Mike and yanked them to his side. “There are children present!” he scandalized with a wry smile.
Brian and Gareth cackled as Dustin and Mike struggled to be released.
“Let me go!” Dustin huffed, pushing at Steve’s side. “I’m not a child!”
Steve let them both go laughing. “Yeah, than tell me what Gareth was referring to and maybe I’ll believe you, dweeb.”
Dustin shrugged. “Probably the same reason my likes Elvis. Young Elvis. The long legs and hips.”
Gareth and Steve shared a wide-eyed glance.
Gareth nodded appreciatively. “I can see why Robin calls you the genius child. Right in one, kiddo. How about you, Mike? You in it for the music or Eddie in tight pants?”
Mike stuttered and sputtered as he turned bright red.
“The tight pants for sure,” Brian teased, elbowing Gareth who was giggling.
“But I like girls!” Mike finally managed to spit out, his eyes wide and his fist clenched.
Dustin raised a confused eyebrow. “My ma is always talking about David Bowie and how he likes both men and women and doesn’t matter who his partner is, he’s not gay if he’s with a man or straight if he’s with a woman, he’ll always be bisexual.”
“I think I want to meet your mom, kid,” Gareth said with a low whistle. “I’d like to shake her hand. Sounds like the best mom, ever.”
Dustin blushed as he flashed a big grin.
“You can be both?” Mike whispered, suddenly shy. He ducked his head and picked at his nails.
Brian put an arm around his shoulders. “Let me introduce you to Jeff, he’s bisexual too. He’ll be able to answer all your questions.” Then he quietly led him away from the group.
“Congrats on blowing that kid’s mind,” Steve said with a huff of laughter. Gareth just grinned back.
Dustin scoffed. “I’ve known Mike liked boys since the fourth grade.”
Steve blinked at him for a moment. “Well then. Still he’s about to be opened up to a world of possibilities he’s never even considered before.”
“If he’s not as big an ass he likes to pretend he is,” Dustin said rolling his eyes, “then hopefully he’ll have asked Will out by the end of the concert.”
Steve burst out laughing. “I love you optimism, bud. But I think it’s going to take Mike a little bit longer than that.” He held up his finger and thumb and pushed them really closed together.
Dustin just shrugged and then started yapping poor Gareth’s ear off on whether or not the EP Kas’s Revenge counted as their first album or not, so Steve wisely made his escape. It was that he didn’t care about that sort of thing, but it looked like it was about to get into a lot technical stuff that would go over his head.
Lucas peeled away from Brian, Mike, and Jeff and spotted Steve. “Hey, man! Thanks for this! This is cool, too!”
Steve smiled. “You’re welcome. It might be a little unfair you getting two events like this, but I with all the stars and shit here, everyone is getting their own double dose!”
“Eh,” Lucas said, cocking his head to the side, “I’m not too bothered by that.”
Steve laughed. “You are such an asshole sometimes, you know that?” he said, squeezing Lucas’s shoulder.
“Hanging out with Dustin and Mike,” he said with a shrug, “it tends to rub off on you whether you want to or not.”
“That’s true,” he murmured looking around. “Hey, I thought your sister came, too. I don’t see her.”
Lucas looked around frantically. “Shit. I don’t see here either. I thought she was right there with me talking D&D with Jeff. I didn’t even realize that she had wandered off.”
Steve stopped looking for Erica and started looking for Eddie. He knew this place better than Lucas or him. He spotted him getting a drink at the buffet table and made a beeline for him, with Lucas hot on his heels.
“Hey, Eddie,” Steve said a little panicked as he neared the rockstar. “Have you seen Erica? Little black girl, pink dress, hair in corn rows?”
“Oh yeah,” Eddie said with a grin. “Come follow me.”
Steve and Lucas shared a glance but did as they were told. Eddie led them around the house to a part of the property that Steve hadn’t seen before. Out here was more like what Steve had expected when he was told Uncle Wayne lived on a ranch. There were sprawling pastures and a beautiful bright red barn, like something out of the movies.
A little distance away Steve could see Erica with Uncle Wayne feeding a carrot to a blue roan, while a spotted brown and white horse tried to steal from it.
“Erica!” Lucas breathed out and he trotted up to her. “You need to tell someone before you wander off...”
Wayne looked down at her with a glare. “I thought you told me you had told Steve where you were.”
Erica turned back slowly to Wayne, wide-eyed. “Oh, maybe it was Eddie I told. Or, um...”
Eddie put his hands on his hips. “I know for a fact you didn’t tell me, the only reason I knew where you were is because I know a horse girl when I see one.”
“Uh-huh,” Wayne said eyeing her warily. “I’ll let it slide this time, Missy, but I catch you lyin’ to me again and I’ll revoke your horse visiting privileges.”
Erica pouted. “I’m sorry, Uncle Wayne. I’ll be sure to tell people where I’m going from now on.”
Wayne nodded curtly and went back to feeding the horses. “I don’t think you’ve met my horses the last time you were here, Steve.”
Steve smiled at him. “No, sir. Wasn’t even brought up.” He cocked his head to the side and raised an eyebrow to emphasis his point.
“Ah,” Wayne said pursing his lips together. “I guess I was a tad remiss in my duties then. These are two of my rascals. Jadis and Fledge.”
Steve snapped his fingers as he thought. “Those are from the Chronicles of Narnia, right?”
“Eddie came by his love for fantasy naturally,” Wayne said with a smile. “But why don’t you boys head back to the party, I’ll watch this one and make sure we get to the concert just fine.”
“With the promise I get to bring her back at later date so we can both see the horses,” Steve said with a grin.
Erica looked up at Steve with unbridled glee. “Oh can we?” she asked Uncle Wayne.
“As long as your parents say you can,” Wayne said with a solemn nod, “than that’s a promise.”
As soon as the three of them got back to the party Robin came dashing up to them all bright-eyed and excited.
“Ellie is talking to the Diane Von Furstenberg,” she said breathlessly. “Can you believe that?”
Steve only knew who that was only because his mother hated her.
Eddie lit up. “I’m glad she was able to make it. She’s Chrissy’s favorite designer. I hope Ellie gets a lot of good tips from her.”
“Can I run away with you?” Robin asked in wide-eyed seriousness. “I’ll continue to PA for you, I don’t care. But you know some of the coolest people.”
Eddie huffed out a laugh. “Turn eighteen and we’ll talk then.”
Robin jumped up and down clapping. “You coming with me.” She grabbed his arm and forced him to introduce her to some of the other greats that were there.
Chrissy came bounding up to him all smiles. “So did I win back the favor of the fair prince?”
Steve grinned. “Hell yeah you did! All of them have had their minds blown and then are going to be treated to one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen. And when I say that, that’s not hyperbole, me and my now ex-boyfriend went to a lot of concerts growing up. There is no doubt Corroded Coffin blows them out of the water.”
She grinned up at him. “Hell yeah they do.”

"Dad! Do we have envelopes?"
"Why do you need an envelope? You mailin' a check?" Joel looks up from the morning paper. He isn't sure if he's heard Sarah right, yet she stands in front of him with a folded piece of paper and a sweet smile.
"I'm dropping off a letter. Please, Dad, I just need one," Sarah rolls her eyes. Ever since she's turned twelve, the eye rolling has become a constant. It drives Joel up a wall, but he'd be blue in the face before she stops. It has to run its course, whether he likes it or not.
"They're in the desk drawer," Joel sighs. He picks up the newspaper again after he takes a sip of his coffee. Whatever she's up to, he's sure he'll find out soon enough.
Sarah mutters a thanks as she leaves the room. She waits until he's reading again before she shoves the letter into the envelope. With a quick glance back, she knows it's now or never.
"I'm going to the mailbox! Be right back!"
Before Joel could ask any other questions, Sarah is already out the door and headed towards your mailbox. Your car is parked in the driveway, but there's no sign of you outside. Perfect.
A few quick strides later, and Sarah is shoving the envelope in your mailbox. She pulls the little red tab up before she scampers away. As she walks, she prays you see it sooner rather than later.
Luck is in her favor, considering you're walking out to check your mailbox as she closes the front door. You notice the red tab and your heart stutters. It's been a couple of months since you moved into the neighborhood, and homesickness has gotten to you. You've been checking the mail in hopes of any news from home, or something to tie you back. Anything to ease the ache that's settled in your bones.
You open the mailbox, immediately confused by the top letter. It has no information on the front which makes you a bit nervous. If it's ended up in here, it must be from someone who knows you- a very short list.
Instead of bringing it inside, you open it right at the mailbox. The bills and junk mail are shoved back in the box before you open it.
"Hi,
This is Joel, your neighbor on the right. The one with the girl, Sarah. I would like to take you on a date. Call me."
You read it over, a bit skeptical that someone is pulling a prank on either you or Joel. Part of you wonders if it is Joel, but you highly doubt he's writing letters to his neighbor in a glittery purple pen. The few times you've had a conversation with Joel- beyond a quick hello or a wave as you both leave for work- he's been very direct. Never one to beat around the bush, which you admire.
The other part of you knows it's more likely that Sarah's behind this. The idea of her writing this has you smiling. She's a smart one, and you know Joel will have his hands full as she grows up. You've talked to her enough to hear how smart she is. That being said, she'll need to learn how to cover her tracks and try to avoid pretty gel pens when writing like her father.
With the letter in hand, you head next door and knock. From your spot, you can hear some back and forth before the door finally opens. Before you stands the supposed author in question, a bit confused when he sees you.
"Hi, darlin'. You okay? You don't usually come knockin' this early." Joel gives you a kind smile. One that you've thought of more than one.
Admittedly, you do have a small crush on Joel. He always makes it a point to help you with groceries, or even mow your lawn if you're too busy to get around to it. All without you having to ask or mention it. The goodness of his heart, you suppose. His consideration makes your head spin- along with how devilishly handsome he is. You've been known to stare when he's outside without a shirt on, working on some house project he's tasked himself with.
"Good morning, Joel. Sorry to bother you, but I got this letter and I wanted to just verify that you wrote it." You hand him the letter with a slight chuckle. He looks just as confused as you were a few moments ago. As he reads, his face shifts. It's a mix between disbelief and mortification.
"That girl," Joel mutters under his breath. He rubs his forehead as he tries to come up with something to say. Before he can say anything, you pipe up.
"While I'll never be the one to judge your pen choice, I have a feeling someone else in your house may be the culprit."
Joel chuckles, unable to stop himself. It's both from how funny he finds you while also in disbelief at the situation. He nods and folds the paper back up.
"I'm sorry about that. I knew something was up when she asked for an envelope this morning. Kid's gonna be the death of me, one of these days," he sighs. Your good humor eases the tension in his muscles. Everything about you does, but he lets that thought die out as you cross your arms over your chest.
"Well, can you stay alive long enough for us to go on the date? I know it was her idea but I'll admit, I was excited to see you asked me out..." You glance away, a smile on your lips. When you look back at Joel, the tips of his ears are pink and he looks to be at a loss for words.
"I, I've been meanin' to ask you," he admits. "I guess Sarah overheard me talkin' to Tommy. Just didn't think she'd do something about it." Joel finally smiles. It's warm and a bit humorous. Leave it to his daughter to push him in the right direction.
"I'm glad she did. You free tomorrow night?" You ask, taking the letter out of his hands. You want it for safe keeping, in hopes that one day you'll pull it out and remember how you and Joel went on your first date. Just the idea has your heart hammering.
"Yeah, yeah," Joel finally nods after a beat of silence. "I'm off work for the next few days." He knows he should be the one asking you out, but he won't look a gift horse in the mouth.
"You workin' today?" You tilt your head, a curious look in your eyes as you look Joel over. If your attraction to him had been a question before, all the confirmation he needs is standing right in front of him.
"Not today, no." Joel can feel his chest constrict, his mouth suddenly dry. The look on your face shifts into something he's only imagined in the middle of the night, his hand down his pajama pants and mind full of you.
"Well, if you find yourself with some free time today, I'll be next door. Bye, Joel." You shoot him a wink before you saunter away from his front door. Even without looking, you know his eyes are on you. From a distance, you can hear him call for Sarah that he has to run to the neighbor's house for a bit.
Yeah, Joel definitely has some free time today.

Word Count: 5.6k
Notes: Chapter twenty, woop woop! Did not think this fic would ever get this long, but here we are! Thank you all so much for sticking with me so far <3
Three fifteen in the afternoon couldn’t come soon enough.
It was overcast, though the weather was warming ever so slowly as spring deepened. You were loitering near the wall boarding the vegetable path, the one you once sat against, crying in the rain after your fight with James. You had almost forgotten about it until now, the memory feeling like old news, as if it had happened years ago. So much had gone on since, so much to replace it. You hadn’t known it then, caught up in the idea that there was no way James could ever like you, but you each had nearly stumbled upon the other's secret. You had missed it by a hair, blinded by your insecurity, him by his immaturity. You knew now that he had been telling the truth, that he was worried you would be embarrassed, that through Mulciber’s words too much of himself would be given away, tainting an otherwise flowering friendship.
“I think I thought it’d embarrass you, or make you uncomfortable. I know I should’ve just gotten over it, but…”
“You thought I’d be embarrassed. Give me a break.”
“Yeah, I did. And then after what you said last night—”
“Last night you acted like a child.”
“I don’t know why I said that.”
You shook the thought from your head, turning towards the grass, bright and emerald even under the clouds. The bell tower rang, marking the end of the period. Right now Slughorn was watching his class pack up their things, his wand waving in the air to clean the cauldrons as James hurried out. You leaned against the wall, your arms crossed as you impatiently waited for him to arrive, your fingers buzzing.
Five minutes later you heard a noise, a small rustle of the grass in the distance. You searched but found no one there, only a stray squirrel scurrying across the lawn. Just as you wrote it off it happened again, the sound distinctly footsteps through the grass. You perked up, kicking off the wall as you reached for your wand.
“Psst!”
You whipped your wand from your pocket, spinning around to try and pinpoint where the voice had come from. “Hello?”
“It's me!”
You jumped, the sound coming right from behind you. You swung your arm to point your wand, though your hand hit something hard…and invisible. You dropped your hand, now more annoyed than anything.
“James,” you gritted, your eyes hard as you started into the empty space.
“Sorry, babe. Just taking precautions.” You could practically hear his smile, charming even if you couldn’t see it.
“I don’t think Lily will see us here, or anyone else, for that matter,” you whispered, your expression having softened. It was sweet, you realized, even if he was a bit ridiculous.
“It’s not just that. Mulciber could be hanging around, or that slime ball.”
“Slime ball?”
“He did try to poison you,” he argued.
“Why couldn’t we have gone to the RoR?” you asked, your eyes bouncing around, hoping you were landing somewhere near his face.
“They know where it is. Can’t have Sirius barging in,” he said, continuing before you could counter, “C’mon, lets go.”
“Where?”
“Over past the hill. You’d have to be at least on the sixth floor to see over it, and even then, you’d never be able to tell it was us.”
“All right,” you said, warily. “Just don’t let me bump into you.”
You walked out farther from the castle, stopping once you were over the hill as you waited for him to take off the cloak.
In a moment James pulled the cloak from himself, his hair mused and glasses crooked. He straightened them, loosening his tie before he balled up the cloak, shoving it into his charmed pocket.
“Everyone had charmed pockets but me,” you said with a frown.
“It’s illegal, y’know,” he teased, plopping down onto the grass. “Wouldn’t want you getting in trouble.”
His smile was like the sun as he looked up at you, his head motioning towards the spot beside him. As soon as you sat, shaking your head as you went to argue, you were cut short. He wrapped an arm around your shoulders, pulling you down so he could look into your eyes. It was like he was dipping you, reminding you of all the times you’ve danced, how he always seemed to find a way to get you to succumb to his pleas. You smiled, practically beaming as he held you.
“I’ve never told you before, because I couldn’t,” you began, forcing yourself out of old habits of biting your tongue, “but I always liked when you danced with me.”
“Yeah?” he said, his hand moving up your arm and over your shoulder mindlessly. “Where’d this come from?”
“I don’t know,” you lied. It still felt odd to say such things to him, as if you had a reason to be embarrassed. I’m his girl, you recalled. I’m his and he’s mine. “I was just thinking about all the things I wanted to tell you before, but didn’t.”
His hand stopped moving, settling on your elbow. “I have a million of those.”
You propped yourself up, the grass tickling your ankles as you grew nearer. With an unusual burst of confidence, you brushed your nose against his, smirking as you felt his breath catch in his throat. In a split second he leaned forward, pulling you into his chest, your lips meeting, smooth like the small waves of the Black Lake lapping against the shore. Still, you had a million questions to ask, years worth of moments that needed revisiting. As you pulled away he brushed the side of your face, staring into your eyes.
“Tell me one,” you said, your faces still close. When he didn’t answer, your smirk grew playful, more like his than yours. “I told you one, it’s only fair.”
“That's not true. I told you one yesterday, about when you asked to do your project on Sleekeazy's.”
“It’s still your turn,” you challenged, watching as he caved to your will, his head lulling to the side.
He picked his head back up, his hand burning up where it still stroked your temple. “Old or new?”
“Dealer's choice.”
His eyes turned up towards the sky as he thought, the clouds reflected in his glasses. “Remember when Padfoot locked himself into Myrtle's bathroom?”
“Of course,” you laughed. “That was one of the best days of my life.”
This September they had been planning a prank in which they would somehow herd Severus into Myrtle's bathroom, only to have the door lock behind him with a particularly effective charm. It had taken days to perfect the spell and a great degree of careful planning to figure out how they were going to accomplish the feat, only for the door to close by accident, Sirius inside. Remus eventually broke him out, though Sirius was stuck for hours, forced to listen to Myrtle's endless whining and flirtatious advances.
“When we were all huddled around the door listening to him bitch, we were right next to each other and I put my arm around your shoulder. I felt pretty sly at the time,” as he spoke he grew more and more smug, looking at you as if he had won some imaginary game with rules only he knew.
You hit his arm, scowling at him without really meaning it. “Really?”
“Yes, and now it’s your turn. Diviner’s choice.”
“Very clever,” you droned, though you were unable to bite back your smile, peeking out on the corner of your lips. You thought about it for a moment, though you already knew what you were going to say. “That very corny speech you gave in the RoR to try and cheer me up. It’s like you were trying to kill me.”
He laughed, calm in a way you almost never were. “Now you know what it’s like looking at you everyday. You’re lucky I haven’t gotten up onto the table in the Great Hall to serenade you.”
“Please don’t,” you begged, dropping your forehead onto his shoulder. You felt him vibrate as he laughed more, his hand forcing your head up again.
“I won’t, I promise,” he said, his head tilting as he looked across your face. His eyes softened, his smile dropping into something saccharine, sickening if you weren’t in love. “I’m so mad for you, Y/N, you don’t even know.”
You wondered how you could take it, listening to him speak to you this way without letting yourself slip up in public, knowing how he felt without ever being able to show it. You leaned in to kiss him again, your fingers in his hair, suspended by the feeling of him against you. With every beat of your heart you heard his voice, fluttering through the air like petals. You don’t even know, you don’t even know, you don’t even know.

“What is up with you lately?”
You jumped, your head shooting to look at Marlene. The dungeons were dimly lit, just enough to shine against her blonde hair. She was staring at you with narrowed eyes, her arms propped on her knees as you both sat on the staircase, waiting for Lily to finish speaking with Professor Slughorn in his office. Why she couldn’t wait until she had his class, you and Marlene could never say.
“Nothing,” you said, tensing up when she cocked her head, her mouth moving to the side as he considered you. “Really.”
“You’ve been spacey, more than usual,” she said plainly, raising her brows.
You clenched your jaw, too nervous to comment on her characterization of you, which any other time you would’ve found mildly insulting. “I’m just stressed about the N.E.W.T.s.”
You had been studying more lately, spending much of Wednesday going over advanced Astronomy notes, staying in the tower for hours that evening for your weekly observations. Despite this, Marlene was still staring at you, dubious and calculating. After a beat her eyes widened, scaring you more than you’d like to admit.
“I know what it is,” she said as if she had some great realization.
You looked away, your leg bouncing on the step. “Enlighten me, then.”
“What happened this weekend?” she asked, leaning forward to try and catch your eyes. “Did you and him, y’know…?”
You tried to remain expressionless, forcing your gaze to remain forward, though your efforts were in vain. A smile broke out onto her face, her hands coming to squeeze your knees in excitement.
“No way, no way!”
Somehow, it seemed as though you always ended up here, hoping no one would hear her sequels of glee at every new development in your love life. You sent her a stern look, shushing her as you glanced around the corridor.
“This is the best day of my life,” she shrieked. Thankfully, her voice dropped down to a whisper, though she was still working to contain her fervor, “Great Godric, this is bloody fantastic!”
“You have to be quiet,” you scolded, your eyes darting to the office door. This was the last place in the world you wanted to have this conversation.
Marlene bent down to make herself smaller as if it would conceal her voice, completely giddy. “What happened? What exactly happened?”
“We can’t talk about this here,” you said, your hands pulling unconsciously at your sleeves. “Wait until we’re alone or something—”
“Did you tell him, or did he tell you?” Her eyes were shining with an exuberance you weren’t sure you’ve ever seen in her before, her teeth gnawing at her lip. “Did you snog? Please tell me you snogged!”
Knowing she wouldn’t leave you alone unless you partially appeased her, you grumbled, “Yes and yes.”
“You told him or he told you?” she asked hurriedly.
“I don’t know, maybe both?” you whispered, your cheeks already on fire. “And please, for the love of all things good in the world, keep your voice down.”
You looked back at the door again, though it was still safely closed, for now.
“So, what did he say? Was it all chivalrous, or did he, like, take you in his arms like the covers of those books Lily always makes fun of—”
“This is a new low, even for you, Marls,” you said, your face dropping.
Her eyes narrowed as she pointed a finger in your direction. “If you don’t tell me everything, and I mean everything, I am going to be so cross with you— Wait! Does anyone else know?”
“No, and you better not tell anyone, especially Sirius. He’s just settled down with all his crap. I’m not sure how much of it I could take now.”
“Now?” she asked, her voice lifting up in delight. “Are you guys together, like a couple, in secret? That's so romantic— did he ask you to be his girlfriend?”
You let your face fall into your hands with a groan, rubbing at your eyes. It was only Thursday and you had already managed to allow Marlene in on your secret, which was not a good sign.
“Please, can we wait until later?” you mumbled into your palms.
You could hear her about to whine, cut short by the office door opening. You looked up, Marlene shooting back to sit up straight again. Lily emerged, none of the wiser to your conversation as she looked over at you.
You stood, glancing down at Marlene with a stern look. She rolled her eyes, standing up as well.
“Ready?” you asked, turning back to Lily.
“There's another Slug Club this weekend, so I won’t be around this Saturday night,” she said, following you each up the steps to the ground floor, the cold air of the dungeons replaced by the warmth of the main castle.
“That's a drag,” Marlene said, kicking an imaginary stone.
You frowned dramatically towards Lily. “What ever will we do without you?”
She shoved you with her shoulder, laughing as you stumbled to the side. You laughed along, shooting more daggers at Marlene when she looked at you with an elated, sweet smile.
“Let's have fun tomorrow, then,” you continued.
“That's if James lets us go out without the you-know-what,” Marlene huffed. “I can’t believe they haven’t found it yet.”
“They’ve been looking almost every night,” Lily whiserped, leaning in towards you and Marlene. “Remus still can’t break that charm on Filch’s office.”
Marlene sighed again, crossing her arms as you walked outside, the ground damp from fresh rain. “This is such bull. I have a bottle of Firewhiskey and everything. If they don’t find it tonight we’re going to the RoR whether James likes it or not.”
You snorted, knowing there was a row between James and Marlene in the near future. “You can try.”
Marlene smirked, throwing her bag down onto the bench with all the confidence in the world.  “He talks a big game, but we all know who's better at getting their way.”
“No.”
“Come on,” Marlene whined, her fists balled as she stood in front of James. She looked like a spoiled child begging her father for a pony, enough to make you and Dorcas snicker as you watched them from the sofa. James’s cheeks were still ruddy from quidditch, his striped uniform jumper fitted across his arms and chest, all enough to make you want to ogle. He had stayed later than Sirius to help run drills with a second year, much to your chagrin, though you were always happy to see him after practice no matter what time he arrived.
“No,” James said again, spinning around to walk away from her.
Marlene followed behind, making another noise of discontent as he flopped down beside you. “This is ridiculous and you know it.”
“She has a point, James,” said Lily, who you had thus far expected to stay out of it. However, it seemed as though her trust in Dumbledore superseded her usual caution.
James remained unconvinced, looking to the others for help. “You guys agree, don’t you?”
Peter, growing nervous under the scrutiny, nodded.
Sirius was only half paying attention, reading a muggle motor magazine with the dutifulness he should have given to his schoolwork. “Yeah, sure, Prongs.”
Remus only shrugged, peering into the fire. He glanced behind him at Marlene, his mouth tight. “It’s only been two weeks.”
“Nearly three,” she challenged, still holding her ground as she stared back at him.
Remus sighed, meeting James’s eyes for a moment before looking back to her, almost pleading. “Give us some time to find it.”
“Exactly. We’re not miracle workers, here,” James said, throwing up a hand.
Marlene rolled her eyes. “Clearly.”
“Marlene’s right. I think we should,” said Dorcas, leaning forward so she could look at James on the other side of the sofa. “I’ve barely gotten a chance to listen to the radio.”
“I’ll let you borrow it,” James said, clearly none too pleased that his friends were slowly succumbing to Marlene’s protests. Still, you didn’t think much would come of it, given how stubborn he could be.
Dorcas fell back into the sofa with huff, her mouth pulled to the side. “This is such bollocks.”
“Thank you!” Marlene said, motioning to her. “See, James? You’re being completely and utterly—”
“What do you think I should name my bike?” Sirius asked, looking over the top of his magazine.
“You’re naming your bike?” Marlene asked, her eyes ready to roll into the back of her head.
He let the magazine drop onto his chest, unfazed by her dismissal. “If you’re not gonna be supportive, I don’t want to hear it.”
She scoffed, crossing her arms. “We were having a conversation, you know.”
“I want something cool,” Sirius began, tucking a strand of hair behind his ear, “but not too cool like I’m trying, or anything.”
“Yeah, cause we can’t have anyone thinking that,” Marlene said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Sirius said, sitting up a bit straighter.
“Do you have it running yet?” you asked, Marlene shaking her head as Sirius continued to scowl at her from the armchair.
Remus snorted. “Of course, he doesn’t.”
Sirius, now grumpy, nearly gasped in offense. “What's up with the negativity, you twat. It’s not like I can work on it while we’re here. Besides, it is running. It just can’t fly yet.”
“Where do you have it stored, anyway?” Lily asked.
“The kitchen,” Sirius answered, as if it was an entirely normal place to keep a motorbike.
Dorcas laughed in disbelief, “The kitchen?”
Sirius shrugged. “Where else am I going to keep it?”
“Why do you need to name it, anyway?” James said, an impish smile playing on his lips. He was only trying to get him going, and it seemed as though it was going to work.
Sirius looked at him as if it were obvious. “Cause it’s badass.”
“What about Bowie?” Dorcas suggested, surprisingly taking his predicament seriously. “Nothing cooler than him.”
“Aren’t bikes supposed to be girls? Like ships?” Peter asked, glancing around for confirmation.
Lily perked up, her eyes brightening. “Yes. It’s actually pretty interesting. It comes from a superstition regarding goddesses of protection—”
Sirius groaned, slumping further into his chair. “Thanks for getting her going, Wormtail.”
James shook his head, ignoring the impending bickering match as he turned to you. He leaned in a bit closer, your shoulders touching. “Want to practice? We haven’t in a while, don’t want you getting rusty.”
“Aren’t you tired?” you asked, fighting the urge to let yourself fall into him further.
His smile was enough to convince you of anything, though he gave you an excuse anyway. “It’s only quarter to five.”
You sighed, though it was all show, standing up and looking down at him expectantly. “Come on, then.”
“Where’re you two going?” Sirius asked as James stood, smirking devilishly at the two of you.
You turned to him with a shrug, doing your best show of nonchalance. “To practice, where else?”
“I could think of a few—”
“Don’t you have Arithmancy homework?” James interrupted, doing nothing to hide his growing irritation.
“Fuck off, Prongs. I did it yesterday,” Sirius said, throwing his magazine to the side.
Marlene let out a single bark of laughter, holding a hand to her mouth as she turned her face away. Everyone looked at her, Lily utterly perplexed as she let out another snort.
“Lay off the Chocolate Cauldrons, Marls,” Dorcas snapped, halfway between a joke and an insult.
Everyone grew quiet, even more so than before. Peter’s eyes were wide as they darted this way and that, never settling on anyone in particular. Marlene dropped her hand, quietly clearing her throat as her head bent towards the floor. You remained motionless beside James, your mouth closing and then snapping shut again.
“We’ll see you guys at dinner,” said James, turning to leave the common room. You hurried to catch up, looking back to see everyone watching as you stepped out.
“Does she…?” James asked once you were a ways down the corridor, safe from prying ears.
You nodded solemnly, your face contorting in mild indignity. “Yeah, sorry. She guessed on her own, must’ve seen it on my face. Apparently I’m not exactly good at keeping it from her.
James clicked his tongue, lost in thought. “She won’t say anything if she hasn’t already.”
“That's if she can contain her excitement,” you chuckled, dry and only half sincere. “She’s almost as happy as I am.”
He turned to you as you came upon the wall, a jaunty grin plastered onto his face. “So, you’re happy?”
You shook your head at him, standing to the side as he began to walk back and forth to reveal the entrance. “You think?”
You stood beside him as the door slowly revealed itself, his smile not having left. You were the first to push it open, glancing over your shoulder as he slipped inside behind you. “Wanted to get me alone, did you?
“Hanging out with you around the others is good and all,” he began, waltzing over to you, “but having to hide it is pretty tiring.”
He placed his hands on your shoulders, looking into your eyes with a sincerity that made you grow warm in the face.
“Are we really practicing, then?” you asked. “Or is this just some big ploy?”
He smirked. “We probably should. Don’t want you getting rusty.”
You took a step back, his hands dropping for your shoulders. “How boring,” you drawled, making your way across the room.
“I think you mean studious!”
“I know what I said,” you said, pulling your wand from your pocket. “Bring it, Potter.”
James refused to use any advanced spells on you since you got hurt, sticking to hexes and jinxes that could be easily remedied if you were unable to block them. Still, it was good practice, even if you were only throwing up shields against the Bat Bogey hex.
It was nearing dinner when you forced him to stop, insisting that he needed to eat after two separate practices. He allowed you to dote on him for a second, soon pestering you to stay just a while longer.
“Come on, when's the next time we’ll be alone?”
You looked down at him where he was sitting on the floor, his smile nearly inviting enough to persuade you. You checked your watch, sighing as you saw the time.
“We only have fifteen minutes. They’ll come looking for us if we stay any longer,” you said, though it didn’t seem to get through to him.
“We’ll hear them outside the door,” he countered, tapping your ankle with the tip of his shoe. “You’re hurting my feelings, here.”
You rolled your eyes. “You’re such a primadonna.”
His grin only widened, his foot tapping you again. You sighed, sitting down in front of him with the knowledge he would likely tease you over the way you gave in so soon.
Surprisingly he didn’t, instead throwing himself into your lap, resting his head on your legs with a pleased look. You began to laugh, growing nervous the way you did before Saturday night, before the beginning of your unconventional relationship.
“What’re you doing?”
He looked up at you, his head lifting a fraction as a hesitance made its way into his expression, once utterly content. “Do you want me to get up?”
“No,” you said, still giggling, “don’t.”
He smiled, almost boyish beside his cherubic curls, barely contained by his fathers invention. He put his head back down, his hands resting on his stomach as if he were laying on a beach someplace far away, basking in the sunlight. He closed his eyes, his lashes dark against his cheeks. You ran a hand over his hair, your thumb brushing across the tail of his brow.
“James?” you began, your voice low. “When did you, y’know, really start to fancy me?”
It felt easier to say at a whisper, like it could hide the glaring hindrance to an otherwise untainted story. You knew he must’ve recognized what you were asking: when did you start to fall out of love with Lily and into love with me?
He opened his eyes, meeting yours before they drifted away, down to your chin.
“I don’t really know. It wasn’t all at once,” he said after a moment of silence. “Right before we all went home for Christmas last year it started to feel different with her. Whatever we had had worn off, and when it wasn’t exciting,” he faltered, his head turning to look away, over towards the door. “I guess it just became something we were both doing even if we didn’t really know why.”
“I’m sorry– I,” you stuttered, feeling like you should speak, but not knowing what to say.
“Don’t be.” He sat up, brushing a hand over the side of your neck, his fingers inching up to your ear as if it were a work of art all on its one. “I could see it on her face. The novelty had worn off. Once we came back to school, everything we did pissed each other off. When she said we should break up, it wasn’t hard not to argue.”
“You don’t have to tell me this. I should’ve asked,” you said softly, shame creeping up on you.
He shook his head, reaching down to grab your hand, cradling it in his.
“I want you to know. I want you to know that you have nothing to feel guilty about. You did nothing wrong, Y/N,” he paused, sighing as he held your index finger, moving on to your middle, then your ring, stopping there to gaze at it, to hold it. “I knew I was in trouble when I was back home, ‘cause I kept writing you letters and throwing them into the fireplace before I sent them. Lily and I— it’d take us days to write each other back, but if you had written me, I would’ve sent an owl within the hour. Then…that's when I knew.” He dropped your hand, looking into your eyes with a sincerity that nearly scared you. “Lily and I weren’t right for each other. She knew it and I knew it, and it was just a matter of time before we broke up. Me fancying you, it just made it happen quicker. All you did was save us a few months of arguing.”
“I’m sorry I always seem to bring her up,” you said, a deep, poignant melancholy making its way into a moment that should’ve been happy, without the burdens of outside forces. Still, you couldn’t help but think of her, your best friend.
“You didn’t, I did,” he said, his voice laced with a tenderness that made your chest ache. “And don’t say you're sorry. I should be sorry. I was stupid, I was so bloody stupid I’m surprised you’re even in love with me.”
You furrowed your brows, the thought of not loving him almost impossible to conceive. “What d’you mean?”
His gaze grew distant, though not entirely unreachable, foggy around the edges. “I liked the idea of Lily, and I was dumb enough to think that the longer I was with her the more she’d be like the person I made her out to be in my mind. But she wasn’t,” he spoke slowly, sure in every word he said. His eyes met yours again, the ghost of a smile on his lips. “She was Lily, who’s fantastic, but she's not the girl I fell in love with. For a while I thought I did– thought I fell in love with her— but I was just kidding myself. I had no fucking idea what love was,” his words burst from him in the same way he sat with bated breath during a quidditch match, screaming at the top of his lungs when his team scored. You saw in his eyes only earnestness, the image of a young man taken up in something bigger than himself.
Suddenly, his shoulders relaxed, licking his lips as he looked at you fondly. “And then there was you. And I know I’m in love with you, because if I’m not, then no one has ever been in love before.”
You stared back at him, a small part of your insecurities fading into the background where they could live with your old self, the one who didn’t know James as you knew him now. He continued to surprise you, even though you should’ve been used to the way he spoke so fervently. Sometimes his words stumbled from him onto unsteady ground, imperfect and lacking some finer complexities, though now was not one of those times. You knew precisely what he meant, and it made you want to cry.
“James,” you said, no more than a whisper, your eyes growing glassy. “I don’t know what to say— I never know what to say.”
He touched your cheek, his thumb brushing the corner of your mouth. “You don’t have to say anything.”
“But I do,” you began, reaching up to hold his wrist. “You can’t just say all of that and then expect me not to have anything to say back.”
“Yes I can,” he said, shaking his head. “I fucked up before, and I’m gonna make sure I don’t fuck it up again. I’ll tell you everything that happened with me and her, everything I ever thought about you, the whole thing. And maybe one day, whenever you feel like it, you can tell me everything that happened before Saturday. But I’m not gonna ask, ‘cause you don’t have to. Never feel like you have to.”
You couldn’t help yourself. Your grip tightened on his wrist, rushing forward to kiss him. His hand remained on your face, rubbing at your cheek, cradling your jaw as you pushed at the sleeve of his jumper. Your head felt light the way it did when you chain smoked after a party, when everything you touched felt realer, more alive than the living.
“Thank you,” you said, only inches away from his mouth. You were breathless, pecking him once before speaking again, “I want to— tell you, I mean.”
His eyes were blown out under his glasses, his lips daringly pink. “What do you want to tell me?” he asked, speaking much the same.
“I don’t know, just something.” You laughed a bit, brushing some hair off his forehead. You thought of everything that came before, back to the very beginning. “Before we were friends, before I really knew you, I didn’t really like you.”
“Is this supposed to make me feel good?” he chuckled.
“No— well, yeah, I guess. It’s just that you were so charming. Everyone seemed to love you, even the professors, even though you were a giant pain in the arse.”
James pushed your shoulder lightly, breaking your confession with a laugh. You did the same, trying to push down your nerves enough to continue.
“You just seemed to shine,” you said, swallowing some lingering uncertainty, “like this ray of light that forced you to look. But I thought it was all on purpose, that you were charming on purpose, and maybe if I looked hard enough I could see through your act. But after we started to become friends, it was blinding, you were blinding, because I knew that it was real,” you stopped, realizing that what you were saying was mildly insulting. You looked at James, though he didn’t seem offended. On the contrary, he was staring at you in a strange sort of amazement, as if you had described something otherwise indescribable.
“When I knew you, really knew you, I finally understood why everyone loved you. I fought against it for a long time, because I knew once I was in, I was never getting out. I couldn’t help it, and it started to eat me up inside. I don’t really remember exactly, but by last Christmas it was stressing me out, because I knew I had a crush on my friend's boyfriend. I thought that maybe it would go away, but it never did. It wasn’t until a month ago that I realized I loved you, or at least admitted it to myself.”
“Don’t give me a big head,” he said, slowly breaking out into a grin.
“It’s too late for that,” you teased, happy when he kissed you again, just once.
“I have you beat, though,” he said, pulling away. You only looked at him with furrowed brows, completely confused. “I wrote you a letter on Halloween when I was absolutely pissed. It said ‘I’m in love with you, I’m sorry,’” he laughed, the corners of his eyes crinkling. “I wish I had kept it, would’ve been funny to have now.”
“That long?” you asked, your heart leaping.
“What can I say? You’re easy to love.”

Hello there! 👋I had this idea in my head for a while. The detective decides it's better to leave Gotham and Edward manages to convince her to stay by admitting his feelings for her. If you have the inspiration to write something like this I would be more than happy to read it😍🥺🥺
Your works are all amazing and I can't wait to read more❤️❤️
Don't Leave Me
Tumblr media
Summary: You try to leave Gotham, but Edward stops you just in time.
Word Count: 2.3k
Content Warning: Spoilers for the end of Arc I of Cat & Mouse.
A/N: My dear @vas17sblog, I have to sincerely apologize for the fact that this ask has been sitting in my inbox since July. 💀 I am literally the worst. I'd always intended to answer this since I felt it fit better after the events of Arc I, but damn, I'm so sorry this took me months to get to. Please forgive me!!!
I also had a request to use the prompt "Don't leave me. Not like this" from an anon, which I combined into this request!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was snowing.
Soft flurries came down from the sky, threatening to coat Gotham in a blanket of white. One bag was clutched tight to your side, the strap digging into your shoulder. The bus stop around you was quiet, not a soul in sight, as cars drove past on the icy roads. You reached into your pocket and pulled out the ticket for Metropolis, gazing at it for a long moment, before stuffing it back into your pocket, the paper rough against your fingertips.
The movers were already at your apartment. You’d let them in, instructed them to pack everything into boxes, and that was that. You couldn’t bear to do it yourself. You didn’t want to see all of your things, belongings you love, stuffed away into boxes and hauled into the back of a truck. You’d already rented a place in Metropolis. Hadn’t even cared to look at anything more than a few photos online. Hadn’t cared that the rent was high. The truth was that you just wanted out of this fucking city, and you were willing to pay a high price to get out. Everywhere you looked, your memories were plagued with all that happened with Beau and the rest of the GCPD. His words remained a constant echo in your mind, gnawing at your soul, ripping it to shreds. Ripping it right from your marrow and stabbing into your very flesh. When you closed your eyes, you saw his smug face. In the dead of night, you heard his voice. Saw Archer’s dead eyes staring back at you. The brand on your skin was still healing, and you itched at the skin around it almost absent-mindedly, like a new bad habit. A habit you couldn’t shake.
This decision hadn’t come lightly. You’d spent hours thinking about what you could do, how you could just get out of Gotham and leave everything behind. The truth was that you needed a fresh start. You need something else – something but the pain and agony rippling through you. Something more than the suffering, more than the pain. You didn’t know what you were going to do, or what Metropolis had in store, but getting out of here…it was the only thing you knew what to do right now. The only thing you wanted.
Edward didn’t know. He couldn’t know. You’d written him a letter and dropped it off at the GCPD, and asked for the receptionist to deliver it to him. By the time he read and came looking for you, you would be long gone. And he couldn’t follow you out of the city, not without risking his parole. He would be made. He would be furious…but he wouldn’t understand, wouldn’t he? He knew what you’d been through, seen it with his own two eyes. He had to understand…but he didn’t have a choice. You’d made your choice.
Tears pricked your eyes, but you blinked them away, squeezing your eyes shut as you shivered against the cold. Where was the damn bus? It should’ve been here by now. Should’ve—
“Detective.”
His voice.
Your eyes snapped open and you turned around in time to find Edward standing there, his eyes wide, his cheeks and nose tinged pink from the chill. Soft flurries of white fell into his hair and onto his shoulders.
“Edward…” you whispered, panic rippling through you. How did he find you?
“What do you think you’re doing?” he asked, his voice rough, eyes narrowed.
“Didn’t you read my note?”
“Of course I did. Every damn word. Twice.” His lips curled back in a scowl. You recognized this look – just how mad he was.
You averted your gaze, a lump forming in your throat, as you glanced both ways down the quiet, still streets. Headlights from passing cars flashed in your eyes.
“It’s not coming,” he said. “I hacked into the bust depot station ad changed the route.”
“What?” you asked, turning back to him. “Why would you do that?”
“And why would you do this?” he demanded, yanking the note out of his pocket, shaking it in his white-knuckled grip. He took a step closer, redness crawling up his throat. “Why would you – I thought – I…” His words trailed off.
“It’s easier this way, Edward,” you said, your voice holding no warmth to it.
He scoffed. “Easier? For who? For you? Because from where I’m standing, it looks like you’re running, my dear.”
“I’m trying to get away from all of this. From Gotham. Don’t you get that?”
“Are you trying to get away from Gotham? Or from me?” he asked, raising his brows.
His words were like a slap in the face. You stepped back, blinking, your lips twisting into a scowl that matched his own…but maybe there was some truth to what he was saying. Some truth to the reality in which you were trying so hard to avoid.
“I…” the words lodged in your throat.
He took a step closer. “Don’t leave me. Not like this.”
The pain in his voice was raw and real. It was full of everything that made your heart shatter into a million pieces, breaking apart and shattering your very soul. Tears welled behind your eyes as your mouth fell agape, all words dying on your tongue.
“Edward…” you murmured. “I can’t stay here. I can’t—”
“Please,” he whispered, his hands shooting out to capture your face in his hands, his skin warm against your cheeks. Tears spilled from your eyes, and he wiped them away.
“Please don’t run away,” he said. “Not from me. Not from this damn city. Please.”
You squeezed your eyes shut, tilting your head slightly into his hand. You’d been so firm in your decision, so adamant about it, so desperate to get out of here and keep everything a secret from Edward – because you still couldn’t look at him. This was the first time you’d seen him in person in weeks, and this was exactly why you’d never wanted to see him in the first place – because seeing him reignited all those feelings inside of you, that aching warmth in your heart.
And now you were questioning everything all over again.
“I can’t,” you whispered, voice trembling.
“Yes, you can,” he pleaded. “You’re strong. You’re not a coward.”
“But I’m so scared,” you whispered. You were terrified of what the future held, of what was going to happen next. It clawed up your throat and made itself known, shedding your skin and burrowing its way inside.
“I know,” he said. “But don’t let your fears control you. Don’t let it consume you.”
“Aren’t you afraid?” you asked, opening your eyes again to find him staring down at you, towering over you, his body heat enveloping you.
“No,” he said. “Not as long as I have you.”
You scoffed under your breath. “I have to go, Edward.”
“No,” he said, firmer this time. “I refuse to let you run.”
You looked away, back at the quiet streets. A thousand questions raced through your mind, but you weren’t sure what to ask of him or how to make sense of this. How were you supposed to move on? To go on after everything that happened? To walk these streets and pretend that nothing happened to you?
You met his gaze, hardened, his jaw set tight. His hands still cupped your face, wiping away the tears that continued to roll down your cheeks. But the longer you stared at him, the more the heartache in your chest only grew. God – this is exactly why you’d never wanted to see him: because standing here with him reignited all of your feelings and reminded you just how much you wanted to stay with him, to stay in the city you called home.
“After everything we’ve been through…why would you do this to me?” he asked.
“I’m not trying to hurt you,” you said. “I just—”
“Don’t you get it, detective? How much I care about you? How much I need you in my life?” he asked. “And if you leave, I’ll…” He shook his head, as if he couldn’t get the words out.
You looked away again, words dying on your tongue. His words were a knife in your stomach, twisting and twisting, pulling your soul from your body and stomping on it.
“Detective,” he said again, pulling your eyes to him again. “If you get on that bus, you’re not just leaving Gotham. You’re leaving me. And I cannot sit here and watch you disappear from my life. I won’t let it happen.”
“Edward…”
“I won’t let you run from this. From me. From us,” he said.
Your jaw fell open slightly, your vision blurring from the tears. “But I’m so fucking scared, Edward,” you whispered.
He exhaled a shaky breath, his grip tightening on your face, as if he feared you would slip away the second he let go. His blue eyes burned holes into your own. The soft flurries increased a little, melting on yours and his warm skin.
“I know you’re scared,” he said, his voice unsteady. “I know, because I am, too. Every single day, I wake up terrified that I’ll lose you. That you’ll decide I’m not worthy of you anymore, that one day, you’ll come to your sense and realize I’ve just been a waste of your time. That one day, you’ll wake up and realize you’re better off without me. And now…now you’re proving that fear right.”
Your throat tightened. “Edward…”
“No,” he said, shaking his head, his eyes burning with anger. “You need to listen to me. You need to get it through that thick skull of yours, through that tiny mind I love so much, that if you walk away, if you get on that bus, I swear, I’ll never be the same again.”
“Edward—”
“Listen, detective,” he said again, firmer this time. “Gotham has been nothing but a warzone for me. A place I wanted to prove myself better than the rest of the idiots he walk these streets. A place where I’ve had to run and fight and manipulate to survive. I fought for control, to conquer, to ruin. And then you…” He shook his head, scoffing. “And then you had the audacity to walk into my life. “To make me feel something for you that I’ve never felt for someone else. To make me feel things I didn’t even think I was capable of feeling. And I don’t give one damn about the rest of the city, or the GCPD, or anyone else. You are the only thing I care about.”
His voice dropped into a low whisper. “Detective, I…”
Your breath hitched in your throat, the tears continuing to fall, trembling in his arms now as he pulled you closer, his breath a soft mist against your own skin.
“I don’t know what will become of me if you leave,” he continued after a moment. “I don’t know how I’ll just go on with my sorry, miserable life. You are the only thing that makes my life bearable. The only thing that keeps my reform something I want to work for – to be better for you. If I have to beg, I will. If I have to kneel in this damn snow and swear my life to you, I’ll do it. But please, for the love of God, do not get on that bus. Stay with me. Please.”
The weight of his words crashed over you like a tidal wave. His hands trembled, his breathing grew uneven, as if every part of him clung to you. Like the moment he let go, he would shatter completely, the pieces of him broken all across the snow. His gaze was unwavering, determined, filled with that look you loved so much, his blue eyes only drawing you further and further in. Your chest tightened painfully, like someone was squeezing your heart in their fist. Your own breath hitched in your throat, more tears streaming down your cheeks, which he only wiped away without hesitation.
In the quiet, you heard the deep rumbling of a bus down the road. You finally tore your eyes from his and looked away just in time to see the bus come to a rolling stop by the sign. The doors opened, lights bright and flashing, headlights illuminating the flurries in the snow.
“Please,” Edward whispered again. “Stay. Stay with me.”
His words crackled something to life inside of you, breaking through the walls you’d formed around your fragile heart. He was laying everything out, every vulnerable piece of himself, begging you not to leave…and God, how could you walk away from this? From him?
“I don’t know how I’m supposed to stay here,” you whispered.
“Then we’ll figure it out together,” he said without hesitation.
“You’re impossible, Edward Nigma,” you whispered. “You’re so selfish.”
“Selfish for you,” he replied, his lips curving into that smug smile you loved so much.
You shook your head, but pain rippled through you – but a sob tore from your throat, and before you could think, you threw your arms around him, burying yourself in his warmth. He clutched to you just as tightly, his arms wrapping around you, his breath in your hair, at your cheek, as he trembled against you.
“Please don’t leave,” he whispered, his lips brushing against your temple. “I don’t give a damn about this city. But you…you are the only thing that has ever felt real.”
Your fingers dug into the fabric of his coat, holding onto him like he was a life vest. The bust doors closed as it pulled away, continuing on its route. The ticket in your pocket was meaningless now. Because, deep down, you knew the truth: he had become everything to you. And even though you could leave Gotham, you could never leave him.
And maybe that was enough.

Dp x Dc short idea
Jason is Danny’s dad
Warning: Language
Jason had just returned to the family publicly about two weeks ago. It hadn’t even been that long for him to settle before something happened. The press weren’t even off his ass and he has Alfred requesting he return home for an urgent matter immediately, which is butler speak for get your ass here right now!
The family was happy but adjusting to everything. They had mandatory family dinners at least twice a month and voluntarily got together more frequently, mostly just the siblings, but every once in a while Bruce would sneak in for a movie in the family room.
Alfred was pleased with the progress the family has made over the course of many years. It finally felt like everything was coming together and maybe settling down. He knew he thought that too soon when he answered the buzzer at the front gate. They weren’t expecting any visitors and looking at the video feed it was a young woman with hands on her hips glaring back at the camera. There were two large bags with her and surprisingly enough a young child playing in the grass just a short distance behind her.
“Wayne Residence, Alfred Pennyworth speaking, how may I assist you, ma’am?”
“Lettin’ me in for starters,” she says back with venom on her tongue.
“My apologies, but you do not have an appointment.”
She snorts, “Nah, but ya see, I saw that bastard on the news and thought I’d drop off what he gave me.”
To get her point across, she turns and looks back at the little boy not paying her any attention.
“Danny!” She snaps and he jerks his head to look at, who Alfred is assuming is, his mother. “Come here.”
He hops up at his own pace and dusts off the grass on his knees before trotting over. She leans down to angle the young boy away from the camera and pushing back his hair.
He couldn’t see it well before by the way the boy was positioned before, but Alfred could clearly see a prominent patch of white hair on the left lower section by his neck. Just like the white batch on Jason.
“You gonna let us in now?” She asks rudely.
Alfred has already determined he did not like this woman. He still buzzes them in. He contacts Jason immediately followed closely with Bruce.
Alfred then helps the two carry in the bags, while subtly checking for any weapons or explosives. Instead he finds things meant for a child.
He really didn’t like this woman.
Bruce is the first one to arrive down the stairs, pausing towards the bottom. He glances at Alfred and can see the displeasure in the butler’s eyes.
“Hello, ma’am. I’m Bruce Wayne, nice to meet you.”
“Fuckin’ everyone knows who you are, Brucie Wayne,” she huffs with a roll of her eyes.
Bruce glances down at the very young child who is hearing the foul language. He couldn’t be more than five, and completely oblivious as the little boy runs a hand along the wall and looks around at everything. He particularly keeps going back to the shiny chandelier above their heads.
“Who might you be?” He asks the woman, coming back to her as she almost touches the vase on the entry table. She draws her hand back to fold her arms across her chest.
“Grace.”
The name seems ironic compared to her behavior.
“And how can I help you, Miss Grace?”
“Your thought-to-be-dead son left something of his. I’m here to return it.”
It took no detective to determine she was talking about the boy currently using the door frame to the sitting room as leverage to rock back and forth, holding on with his tiny hands. Bruce could see the splash of white among the dark hair from this angle.
Bruce hums.
“Is that so?”
“I’ve already contacted Master Jason. He should be arriving soon. Shall I prepare some refreshments in the drawing room?” Alfred informs.
“Thank you, Alfred. Right this way,” he says to Grace, directing her toward the left while pulling out his phone to ask Tim to prepare the proper equipment downstairs.
“Danny!” The woman calls with impatience. She glares at the little boy who calmly turns to look at her, then skips behind them.
Grace huffs but doesn’t say anything else as they enter the room. She sits herself in the middle of the love seat and Bruce takes one of the chairs across from her. The boy, Danny, explores the room thoroughly, walking around without pattern and investigating every nook and cabinet to keep himself entertained. Very curious little child.
Bruce tries to engage her in conversation to dig up more information, but she firmly wanted to wait for Jason before divulging anything. He did however find out that Danny is four and needs to be enrolled in kindergarten next turn. Grace works night shift but wouldn’t say where.
Alfred came with three waters, one in a smaller plastic cup for Danny, and a plate of crackers and cut up fruit.
Grace eyes the butler with a raised brow. However, the first words Danny has spoken in their presence is a cute, “Thank you, mister,” before munching on a cracker and sipping from his cup. His curious eyes flick over the fruit and wanders over to his mother who picks at a rip in her jeans. He taps her knee and she sighs.
“What is it?”
“What’s that?”
Danny points to the fruit.
“What’s what?”
He creeps forward to point directly at the blackberries mixed in with the blueberries and strawberries.
“Blackberry,” she answers shortly.
“What’s it taste like?”
“Why don’t you try it and find out?”
He must have approved of that suggestion and reaches in to clumsily wrap a tiny hand around one of the dark berries. He flips it over in his hand for a minute, observing it at all angles, feeling the texture of the little bumps, before shoving it in his mouth. Danny leans his body over the coffee table to drag the bowl closer and rummage through it for more goodies.
Really looking at him, Bruce could see Jason’s freckles and the few other similarities like his square jaw and lip shape. He hasn’t seen it yet but Bruce bets Danny has the same crooked grin as his son.
He has the woman’s pale complexion and nose shape. His hair was straight like hers instead of Jason’s curls, but Danny took his dark coloring compared to her light brunette.
The boy was an adorable mix of both his son and this woman. He almost felt the test was unnecessary, but he didn’t stop Alfred from replacing the plastic cup and take it back to the kitchen where he knew it would be handed off to Tim.
Thankfully it was a day where there weren’t any meetings for either of them to attend.
Surprisingly, it isn’t Jason that enters the room first, it’s Damian coming home from school. The fourteen year old, almost fifteen, holds a leash in one hand with Titus standing patiently next to him, ready for his after school walk.
“Father, I heard we have guests.”
The teen stops in the doorway and Danny turns with interest until he spots the animal, then his eyes bug with excitement.
“Mommy, doggie,” he whisper shouts.
She just hums in affirmative, looking the new arrival up and down.
Danny grabs a blackberry from the bowl and trots over to Damian. He holds out the piece of fruit.
“This is a blackberry,” he states proudly.
Damian blinks down at the small child. Titus tilts his head, his nose working hard.
“I’m aware.”
“You can have it, if you let me pet your doggie,” he negotiates like he needed to give something in order to receive permission.
Damian looks up to his father for answers.
“Jason will be here soon,” is what he gets instead, his father’s lips twitch.
Damian looks back down in sudden realization when he sees the similarities between the man and this boy. He sighs tiredly.
“Pennyworth. A wet washcloth if you please.”
“Right away, Master Damian.”
“Next time, you only need to ask to pet Titus, you do not need to give me anything in return,” he tells the child.
Danny looks down at the berry sitting in his stained hands.
“So you don’t want it?”
“…Maybe later.”
“Okay!”
Danny skips back to carefully set the berry off the side on the tray, as if to save it for Damian for later like he said. He jogs the short distance back to them.
“Can I pet your doggie now, please?”
Damian takes the washcloth Alfred hands him with a nod and crouches down to get level with the boy.
“We must wipe our hands first. We don’t want anything sticky in his fur,” he explains as he holds out the washcloth for Danny’s hands.
The four year old looks down at the stains to see what he means and then places his hands on the washcloth for Damian to get the juices off.
The teen then calmly explains how to properly approach a dog he does not know by letting Titus smell the back of his hand first and then to always stay calm and confident.
Titus, the gentle giant that he is, had no problems letting the tiny child pat him and run small fingers through his short fur. It was endearing to hear the giggles when Titus used his big nose to sniff at the child’s face and neck. Sitting down, Titus was taller than the child standing up, which would have been scary to some kids, but Danny seemed to love Titus instantly. The little boy easily telling the dog what a good boy he is even with the dog sitting there doing nothing.
“Titus needs his afternoon walk now,” Damian informs.
Titus stands at the word walk, clearly ready to go.
“Oh, okay.” Danny turns to the big dog to reach up and pat his head twice. “Bye-bye, Titus. Have a good walk.”
The two leave and Danny skips back over to hang over the arm of the love seat his mother sits in, typing on her phone.
“Mommy, did you see the doggie? His name is Titus. He’s a good dog.”
“Uh-huh,” she comments without really listening.
“Do you like dogs, Danny?” Bruce asks with a smile.
Danny looks at him like he forgot the man was there, tilts his head as he studies him for a moment. Bruce waits patiently until Danny deems him okay and perks back up with bright eyes.
“Uh-huh! I love dogs! Mommy says we can’t get one ‘cuz our ‘partment is too small and they’re dirty. You’s guys are lucky,” the boy rambles as he wanders around the coffee table to get closer to Bruce and away from his distracted mother.
“How do you feel about cats? Damian has a black and white one around here somewhere.”
Danny shrugs and they continue to have a rather pleasant conversation about different animals and foods and each of their houses. It takes up the amount of time for Jason to walk through the door, seemingly already informed of the situation from Alfred.
Jason was… flabbergasted. Bewildered. Caught unprepared. He was a lot of words. Mostly he was scared.
Did he really have a child? A son? If that was true then he missed so much. He missed all of his firsts. First words, first steps, first laugh, first everything.
Would the boy even like him? What if he saw all his scars and was scared of him? What if he didn’t want anything to do with Jason after not being in his life this whole time?
But the boy might not be his. There’s that. That could be… Jason didn’t like the disappointment that thought brought.
Grace was the first one he noticed. Her ripped jeans and low cut top being out of place among the antique furniture and Persian rug. She scowls at him, putting her phone down.
“Finally decided to show up?”
He bites back a comment. He broke several traffic laws to get here, it wasn’t his fault he was fourty minutes away at the time he got the call.
He glances over at Bruce and instead his eyes zero in on the child standing by the armchair Bruce was sitting in.
Just one look and he knew the boy was his.
He looks to Bruce anyway for confirmation, since he has no doubt he sent off a sample to Tim hiding like the troll he is in the basement. The man nods. Jason sucks in a deep breath and suddenly needs to sit down.
He sinks heavily in the matching armchair next to Bruce’s, separated only by a round end table. Jason can’t stop staring at those big, blue eyes that are filled with such curiosity and innocence he almost breaks down right then. But he can’t. He has to be strong. He can’t just walk away to get a handle on his emotions. He’s a dad now.
“You’re a hard man to find,” Grace folds her arms over her chest.
“I’ve been busy,” he answers lamely.
She humphs and looks away with a shake of her head.
The boy, Danny Alfred said his name was, creeps around Bruce’s legs to get closer, obviously seeing something in Jason enough to investigate. The room is quiet as they wait to see how Danny will react.
Coming to a stop right before his knees, Danny stares up at the large man with lots of scars and muscles from what he can see. He wasn’t scared. There was just something familiar that he couldn’t quite put his finger on. He looks… he looks like… and he also feels almost like…
Furrowing his brows in a pout, he knows his Mommy doesn’t like it when he does it, but he still makes his eyes burn with green.
The man gasps and his eyes also swirl into an angry green.
“Daddy?” Danny asks with hope and joy.
Daddy swallows and then nods.
“Yea, buddy, I’m your dad.”
“Daddy!” The boy cheers, jumping in place with a wide smile. “Daddy! Mommy, look! It’s Daddy!”
Danny wastes no time climbing into the man’s lap and wrapping his arms around him as far as they’ll go (not very far) to press his ear to Jason’s chest over his heart. He’s practically vibrating with excitement and Jason makes sure to set a large hand on his back to hold him close.
“I fuckin’ knew it,” Grace hisses, her eyes wide at the display earlier. Both of their eyes had returned to their calmer blue and teal color, but everyone in the room saw it. “I knew he got it from you.”
His eyes narrow in warning, pulling the boy closer to his chest. He sets a hand over Danny’s exposed ear to protect him from the harsh words he’s probably already heard before.
“Do you have any idea how creepy it is to deal with a tantrum when your kid has fucking glowing green eyes?”
“Did you hit him?” Jason growls, the vibrations seeming to settle Danny even more.
“Please, I’m not my mother,” she dismisses with a sneer.
Could have fooled him.
“Everything was fine until he started doing freaky shit. I don’t know how to raise a meta kid, alright?”
“What are you talking about?”
Now he was just confused. What stuff was Danny doing that Grace thought he was a meta?
“Don’t try to pretend you don’t have powers too,” she points viciously.
“I’m not pretending. I don’t have powers. I don’t have the meta gene. What can he do?” He demands while being transparently clear.
She just glares back at him, obviously not believing him. That didn’t exactly matter at the moment.
“What can he do?” He repeats with emphasis.
She puckers her lips like she’s tasted something sour and then lifts her chin.
“Why doesn’t he just show you, huh? Danny- Would you stop babying him? Danny, show him the things you can do.”
After Jason takes the hand off the boy’s head, Danny turns to his mother warily.
“But you don’t like it,” he reminds, like she forgot.
“He wants to see it, so show him,” she waves a hand at Jason like he just asked for something he would regret.
Danny leans back to look up at his dad.
“You won’t get mad? Or scared?”
He sounds so unsure and scared. As if Jason could ever hate him. Jason really wants to punch something. Preferably something with her face on it.
“I promise I won’t.”
Another parent might have something more profound to say to reassure their child, but Jason was just starting out and honestly, it was more than Bruce would ever say.
Danny thinks for a second before wiggling to get down. He looks back once more at his mother who gives him a ‘get on with it’ motion.
The boy fidgets a little before covering his face with two hands like he’s playing hide and seek, then- disappears. Jason jerks at watching his son blink out of sight like a Martian.
“Boo!” Danny pops back into view, exactly where he was standing before with his hands out like any child on Halloween.
Jason blinks and then starts laughing. This was karma. Danny could literally become invisible, something the Bats train to do for years.
“That was good, buddy,” Jason chuckles, ruffling the kid’s hair.
Danny hesitantly smiles back, a bit of hope and pride in those eyes.
“There’s more,” Grace interrupts, seemingly uneasy with how well Jason reacted.
“Yea?” Jason directs to Danny, his focus on his son.
Danny gives a shaky nod, glancing over worriedly at Bruce who is just silently watching. Jason could see the tension in his shoulders but also the intrigue.
The boy places a hand on the coffee table and focuses on his hand. It took a few minutes of concentration before Danny’s hand went through the table like he was just dunking his hand in a pool instead of through a solid object.
He pulls his hand out and they could see it be slightly translucent.
“That one’s harder to do when I want to,” Danny mumbles.
“You mean it mostly happens on accident?”
Danny nods.
“I drop a lot. And get stuck sometimes.”
Yea, Jason can see how that could be a problem. He can’t imagine how terrified Danny was the first time a body part got stuck in an immovable object. He really wishes he could have been there for him in his panic.
“The last thing is hard too. But I’ve been practicing. Watch!”
Danny jumps once, twice, and on the third time he lingers in the air, coming down slowly like someone in water or astronauts on the moon. Danny pushes off the ground a fourth time, this time floating steadily higher like gravity meant nothing to him.
Despite the kid obviously have done this before and enjoying it with his giggles, Jason stands under him in case he falls. And falls he does. Suddenly, like the strings being cut and gravity taking hold of him again, Danny plummets into Jason waiting arms. The boy grunts on impact and then smiled sheepishly up at his dad.
“Sorry, Daddy. I promise I’m doing better.”
“That’s okay, squirt. I’m glad I was here to catch you.”
Jason plops back into the chair with his child in his lap.
“Anything else up that sleeve of yours?” He teases but is equally as serious.
Danny shakes his head enough to make his hair fluff. Jason looks to Grace for confirmation and sees she is still recovering from Danny’s fall out of the air. How many times has she had to catch him? Or wasn’t able to catch him?
She clears her throat.
“I don’t know if it’s part of it, but he never gets sick. Never even had a cough.”
Children always get sick, that’s how they build immune systems. For Danny to have never gotten even a cold, Jason doesn’t know if it’s worrying or a good thing.
“Any allergies?” Is the first thing on his mind, thinking of what Alfred will need to know.
She shakes her head with a negative hum.
“In one of the bags is a folder with all of his documents. Birth certificate, immunizations, doctor visits. I also made a list of some favorite things and things he hates. It has foods on there too.”
That was… honestly more than he was expecting from her. But it also cements the fact that she intended to drop him off with him and then never see them again. She raised him for four years and she doesn’t even want visitation? Does she not understand there are legal documents she needs to sign to transfer custody properly?
“There are some things you need to sign, but it will take some time to get it sorted,” Bruce chimes in all business.
Long nails swipe through the air like signing her rights away was trivial.
“My phone number and address are on one of the documents. Just tell me when and where.”
She stands to leave and Jason can feel Danny tense up.
“Are we leaving?” He asks worriedly, climbing down from his seat on his dad’s lap. He didn’t want to go.
“You’re staying here. With your dad,” Grace says shortly, not once looking at the boy.
“Are you going home to get the rest of our stuff?”
“No. I’m going home. You’re staying here. End of story.”
Danny visibly thinks on that for a second then scampers after his mother as she leaves the room.
“Is it like Robbie where his mom lives in one ‘partment and his dad lives in a different one?”
Grace sighs and runs a hand through her hair. She’s clearly flustered and is showing it as irritation, but Jason can’t help but trail behind in case she says something that she shouldn’t.
“No, Danny, it’s not like Robbie. I- I am leaving you here and I’m not coming back, okay?”
Jason takes a step forward to draw her attention and send her a look that says ‘choose your words carefully, this is a conversation he will remember for a long time’.
“But- but why? Is it ‘cuz of my things? I’m sorry I scared you, Mommy. I didn’t mean to. I won’t do them again, promise.”
Jason grits his teeth at how desperate his son sounds, trying to keep his mother with him. Even making a promise he can’t keep.
Grace finally looks at her baby. Sees the turmoil and tears in his baby blue eyes. She gets down on her knees to get level and places her hands on his tiny shoulders.
“You will do them again and that’s not a bad thing. Your things are part of you. That’s okay. You’re not in any trouble. I just- I’m in over my head here, Danny. I can’t take care of you the way you should be taken care of, okay? But your dad can, I hope. So I’m leaving you here. With him.”
Danny’s lip wobbles and she has to restrain herself from not hugging him like she always does when he’s upset.
“Then- then you’ll visit, right? Like Chase’s grandma visits him?”
Why is this so hard?
“I don’t think so, baby. I don’t think you’re gonna see me again. I’m sorry.”
Danny is silent for a while. He wipes his eyes and sniffs.
“Are you goin’ ‘way like Jamal’s dad?”
The ten year old in the same building as them lost his dad in a wrong place wrong time type situation. Jamal had told Danny his dad went away forever so he couldn’t see him again. Grace had told him that when people go away forever, they get put among the stars he loves so much to be remembered.
Grace wears such a pained expression Jason half thought she was about to burst into tears.
“Kinda,” she nods. “So give me a big hug, okay?”
Danny was in her arms before she finished speaking. Jason didn’t exactly know why she wanted to stop all contact, but he had a theory that if Danny really was a meta (and with his powers he was leaning toward believing it) then Grace would want to distance herself as much as possible to protect them both. He met her in Crime Alley, he knew they didn’t live in a good spot. If any one of those crooks saw Danny use any of his powers, they could steal him easily from his single mother. She didn’t want to give those kind of people leverage to get Danny and sell him off. She wasn’t trying to be cruel, she was just trying to do what was best for her kid, even if that meant cutting her out of his life.
He had a strange new respect for her he didn’t want to acknowledge.
Grace takes a heavy breath and pulls away showing Danny’s tear stained cheeks. She wipes them like it would do anything.
“I gotta go now, Danny.”
“No,” he cries and Jason’s heart breaks a little more.
“We gotta say goodbye now. Please.”
Grace is just barely hanging on. Jason knows as soon as she walks out that door she’ll break down.
“I don’t want to. Don’t want you to leave,” Danny whines, trying to keep a strong grip on his mother.
She holds his hands in hers and gives him a serious look.
“You’re going to be fine. You’re gonna be just fine with your dad.” She leans in and whispers, “You’re not alone, Danny. You are never alone. Just look up. Look at the stars, baby, and you’ll be okay.”
Danny pouts, but thinks about those words.
“I like the stars,” he mumbles.
She smiles, probably the first one in a while.
“I know you do.”
She kisses his forehead one last time and stands. Danny whines. She steps away.
“Bye-bye, Danny. I- I love you.”
“Mommy,” he cries, tears and snot coming full force now.
Jason can’t take anymore and picks up his son to hold on his hip.
“It’s okay, buddy. I got you,” he assures. He turns to Grace who is having the internal battle of her life in the foyer. “I got him.”
It’s an assurance to her too, that he will take care of Danny, that he would be there for him. It was a promise.
Grace sees it for what it is and leaves out the front door without another word.
Danny screams and cries and struggles, but Jason holds on tight, scared he’ll fall or use his powers to get away and disappear. The man walks back to the drawing room so his son wasn’t staring at the door longingly.
As soon as Jason sits down, Danny struggles harder since they stopped moving. So Jason stands again, adjusting the boy in his arms and starts pacing a path around the room.
Bruce has already disappeared, not knowing what to do with a heartbroken child crying his eyes out. Alfred has cleared away the tray of snacks, leaving two waters on the table, one in a small, plastic cup. Jason spies Damian poke his head in for a second to see what the matter was, and upon seeing no immediate threat went off wherever. Other than that, father and son were alone to figure themselves out.
Danny was going through a lot for a toddler and Jason didn’t exactly know how to handle what happened either. He tried his best with speaking reassurances into the boy’s hair, but he didn’t know if Danny even heard him over his own crying.
It was a rough first meeting to be frank, but after a while (what felt like ages) Danny cried himself to sleep and Jason felt it safe to finally sprawl out on the loveseat with the boy laying on his chest. Compared to a grueling patrol, that was definitely worse. He never wanted to have to go through that again, but knew as a dad it was part of the job description.

Before Sukuna was defeated, he hid your identity from history as well as he could. He wanted to make sure his beloved lover was never found by the sorcerers. However, after his death, no one was there to stop you from being found and sealed.
They would have killed you, but the love poetry and letters Sukuna had written to you was proof that you were his only weak point, so you were sealed in the fear that Sukuna could possibly return centuries later and you could be used to calm him as a back up.
Centuries later and the ancient sorcerers were right. The fearful King of Curses was revived and the higher ups of the Jujutsu world wanted Itadori Yuji executed for being his vessel.
However, Gojo Satoru had other plans.
Your prison realm was stored away deep within Jujutsu High, and he knew exactly where you were and how to unseal you.
“Where…am I? Who- who are you?”
“You are currently at Jujutsu High, a school that trains young sorcerers for the world ahead of them. And I am Gojo Satoru, a teacher here at Jujutsu High and the strongest sorcerer of the modern age. But don’t worry, I didn’t unseal you to hurt you.”
“What did you unseal me for then?” You have no clue what he’s talking about. You’ve been stuck in a cube for what felt like — and was — many many centuries. And this strange man with white hair and a blindfold is telling you about things you barely understand. Your head is spinning.
“I wanted to reunite you with someone.” The man turns around, waiting for you to follow. “Are you coming?”
“How do I know you won’t kill me?” You say shakily, tears pricking the corner of your eyes. You’re so unbelievably scared.
“I won’t. I just want to bring you to someone you know. Someone you love. Sound good?” He finally turns to face you again. Even though he’s blindfolded, it’s like he can see you shaking on the floor.
You wearily bring yourself to your feet and purse your lips. “…okay.”
————————————
Gojo: Hey, Yuji. I’m with someone
I’d like you to meet. Meet me at
the training field in 20 mins.
Yuji: Okay! See you soon Sensei.
————————————
The walk to the training field felt long but also fascinating. Everything around you was so new! How long had you been in that cube? You’re pulled from your wonder when you see someone sitting on a step by the field. His fluffy pink hair reminds you so much of Sukuna it makes your heart break. You miss him so much. Perhaps Gojo has taken you to meet his descendant?
“Ah, Sensei! Who did you want me to meet?”
“Hello Yuji! I wanted to introduce you to someone very important. Say hello to L/N Y/N!”
“Oh, hello Mx. L/N! I’m Itadori Yuji.” He gives you a bright smile and a firm handshake.
“Hello…” There’s a beat of silence before Itadori turns to his teacher.
“So, why’d you want me to meet this person?-“
“How is Sukuna right now?” You perk up at this. Did he just say Sukuna? Was this kid Sukuna? No, definitely not. Then what…
“Huh? Well, he’s completely slient for once. It’s actually quite refreshing to not have his constant nagging- why’d you ask?” Suddenly an eye and a mouth apear under Itadori’s left eye.
“Y/N…”
“Huh- hey!” Itadori slaps his cheek to stop Sukuna from freaking you out.
“It’s okay, Yuji. Let it happen.”
“But-“
“Sukuna?” Itadori’s confusion intensifies when he sees you tearing up. Not out of sadness, but rather happiness and confusion. Just who are you?

Hello! I see people here are talking about Gaza again.
I’m not one to vaguepost, nor do I usually spend time arguing with zionists and liberals online, but the amount of “pro-Palestine” liberals I’ve seen in the last day saying that Gazans “deserve genocide” because Trump won…
I’m not surprised to hear that democrats are mad at third-party voters. It’s true that even if all swing third-party votes went to Kamala she’d still have lost, but reality isn’t important to these people. Democrats want a monopoly - of course they’re upset at everyone who isn’t voting for their party. Of course they’re more upset with communists and anarchists than they are with nazis.
None of this is new. But even though we’ve seen these patterns before, I am absolutely sick to witness these people blaming Palestinians for this. I’m sick hearing them almost gleefully wishing for Gaza to be turned into a parking lot. I’m sick coming across individualistic little diatribes about how they’re “done” boycotting, “done” helping others.
Is it Palestinians’ fault that Kamala’s campaign was so poorly run?
Is it Palestinians’ fault that the US is now so full of nazis that the Democrats lost the popular vote for the first time since 2004, by 5 million votes?
Is it Palestinians’ fault that the US supplies and supports Israel in their annihilation of Gaza and other occupied Palestinian territories, as well as neighbouring countries?
Is it Palestinians’ fault that the government assisting Israel’s genocidal project was, for the past four years, Biden’s administration? A Democrat’s administration?
The crime that Palestinians have committed in the eyes of these liberals is the crime of existing where said liberals can see them - namely, on social media. The unofficial charges: not being silent, resisting, asking for help from the people best equipped to give money for their survival. So again, I’ll ask - is it the fault of Palestinians that the people best equipped to help them are those in the imperial core? That the people Palestinians must go to for help are people benefitting from both this genocide and the genocides the empires that house them are built on?
Of course the gravest offence is interrupting the liberal supply of white noise. Comfort is, after all, the biggest priority in liberalism - silence and denial is self care. Murder by proxy is the most popular of hobbies, and is best enjoyed with the sound off. But Palestinians are not quiet. You can see their faces now - and the identification of them as something other than faceless, or rather someone, begins to burrow through the insulation built up around you.
You have the barest sense of how fragile your world is. You can either turn away from this, or continue your journey towards the truth. These liberals are examples of those violently turning away and taking up the slaughter again, desperate to dispel any reminders that they are not the only people on earth worthy of life.
You can literally buy an indulgence now by donating to a Palestinian fundraiser. Yes, even if you’re not a Democrat, or you’re from Europe (chances are your government supplies Israel too, or is at least complacent), or there’s any other facet of your identity that supplies nuance. This is up to all of us, no matter who we are.
I’ve been spotlighting Falastin’s campaign to save her family in Gaza for more than two months now. I will continue to do so until they’re safe; but their safety will likely be a long time coming. This is in part because Falastin’s campaign must support 24 people, and in part because donations are slowing down - not only for Falastin, but for a lot of other fundraisers I keep an eye on. To be afraid for so many people while watching liberals angrily abandoning this cause is distressing and disheartening.
This is life or death. I don’t care who you are, and I care even less to hear if you’ve voted or who you voted for. All I ask is that you boost this post and, if you can, donate to Falastin. The Gofundme is in SEK and the rates are:
10$ = 107 SEK
25$ = 269 SEK
50$ = 538 SEK
100$ = 1,076 SEK
You can also donate via PayPal in USD: [LINK]
We also host a raffle for hand-made Palestinian thob [info HERE], and the first winner will be chosen in a bit less than 2 days.
P. S. Yes, Falastin’s campaign has been vetted, several times across multiple platforms:
#282 in El-Shab-Hussein and Nabulsi's spreadsheet [HERE],
#957 in the Butterfly Project spreadsheet [HERE]

Nanami sat at a quiet corner table in a small cafe, one hand wrapped around a coffee cup that had long since cooled. His gaze drifted out the window, taking in the sights of the street but focusing on none of them.
The hum of the cafe, the muted conversations and clinking cups, was soothing. A moment of quiet felt surreal as he waited for you to meet him.
“Excuse me?”
Nanami looked down to see a small girl, maybe six or seven years old, standing by his table. Her eyes were round and curious, and she was staring at the healed web like burn scars on his face and the scars that peeked out from under the cuff of his shirt.
He felt a pang of self-consciousness and was about to glance away, but the girl tilted her head, undeterred.
“What happened to your face?” she asked, her tone as innocent as her question.
Nanami blinked. He wasn’t used to such direct curiosity. Most people (adults) either looked away out of politeness or offered a sympathetic smile that he never quite knew how to respond to. But this child simply waited, eyes bright and expectant.
He took a steadying breath. “I got hurt while I was working,” he said, choosing his words carefully. “But I’m alright now.”
“Oh,” she replied, digesting this. She looked at his hand, tracing her gaze over the marks on his fingers and wrists. “Does it still hurt?”
“Not anymore.” He found himself softening a bit, his usual reserve giving way to something gentler in the face of her openness.
She nodded, apparently satisfied with this answer, and then broke into a grin. “I think it looks cool. It’s like super hero scars. You must be one!”
Nanami couldn’t help the small smile that tugged at his lips. “Thank you,” he said. “But I’m not a superhero.”
The girl crossed her arms, as if deep in thought. “My dad says superheroes don’t always wear capes. He says sometimes they’re just regular people who help.”
Nanami felt something twist in his chest at that. “Your dad sounds like a smart man.”
“Sometimes,” she said, scrunching up her nose. “But he doesn’t like coffee or chocolate. He says it tastes like dirt.”
Nanami let out a quiet chuckle. “It does, a little bit. But I like it anyway. And chocolate? That sounds criminal.”
The girl laughed with him “That’s what I think! Chocolate is yummy. He’s nuts.” For a moment, it felt like the weight of everything he’d been carrying was a little lighter.
“My name is Emi.”
“I’m Nanami. It’s nice to meet you Emi. Where are your parents?”
“Behind the counter. They own the cafe.” She smiled as she waved at her dad who gave an apologetic look towards Nanami.
“Do you come here a lot?” she asked, swinging her arms a bit as she looked around the cafe.
“Sometimes. Me and my wife like the pastries here. Or I come here to think.”
She seemed to consider this, then pulled a bright red crayon from the front pocket of her Bluey bag and placed it carefully on the table. “Here. In case you need to write something while you think. Or your wife!” she offered earnestly.
Nanami took the crayon, holding it between his fingers as if it were made of glass. “Thank you,” he said, voice soft. “That’s very kind of you.”
The gentle wind from the door opening brought Nanami’s eyes up and to you as you walked over. “Hi darling.”
You bent to kiss his cheek and smiled before looking over at the little girl. “Well hello! Do we have a new friend?”
“I’m Emi! Is Mr. Nanami your husband?”
You nodded sitting down at the table but still keep contact with the girl.” “Uh huh. He is.”
“Thats so cool. You’re married to a super hero! Did you know that?”
You looked up to Nanami, confused as he chuckled and traced his thumb over the crayons paper wrapping. “It’s.. we’ll get to that in a second.”

alexia putellas x reader [& r's nephew] r gets custody of her 5 year old nephew when her brother gets into trouble. alexia insists on sticking around even though r gives her an out. it's a new and entirely stressful situation for r, but alexia makes it a bit easier. fluff, angst, etc. this is a kidfic.
How was it possible? That the most ordinary of days could be just one phone call away from shattering life as you knew it.
You should have known, really. Should have seen it coming. You were happy for the first time in a while. Happy in your career, in your relationship. Of course something would come along to change everything.
It was a pleasant day off, the day you got the call. A slow morning where Alexia woke up way before you, but didn’t get up. Instead, she let you sleep in her arms, completely content to just… be there with you. You’d made breakfast together, Alexia’s voice raspy from lack of use, pressing kisses to your shoulders, your face, your neck, as if she couldn’t help it. It was purely and entirely happy.
Your phone rang just after breakfast. It was an unknown number and you never answered unknown numbers but something about the call made your stomach drop. You clicked the answer button and gave Alexia an apologetic smile, walking out of the room.
“Hello?” You greeted, tapping your foot impatiently when no one said anything right away. Alexia had put on her favorite show, and as much as you pretended to despise the soap, you were hooked.
The robotic, pre-recorded message that began startled you.
“This call is from a person currently incarcerated in prison. All calls are logged and recorded and may be listened to by a member of prison staff. If you do not wish to accept this call, please hang up now.”
It wasn’t shocking, not really. You’d gotten calls like this before, but not for a few years. He used to call a lot, when he first started getting into trouble, asking for money for a lawyer. At the time, you hadn’t had any to give him. Eventually those specific calls stopped. You still heard from him, but not through a call being recorded by a prison.
He hadn’t been arrested in 5 years. And now… the stakes were much higher.
“Hello?” The deep voice of your brother came over the line, sounding utterly defeated.
“Leo.” You sighed. “What happened?”
“I fucked up. I… Will wanted to start football. But I couldn’t… I couldn’t pay for boots for him. I just wanted to get him something nice.” Leo choked out. You could hear the emotion in his voice, and ignored the pang in your chest as you pictured the little boy just two years older than you, lip trembling as he promised he’d take care of everything.
“Leo, why didn’t you call me? And ask for help?”
“I didn’t want to bother you. You’re busy and I should be able to provide for my son. I shouldn’t have to ask my little sister for help, I should have it figured out.”
“So… this is better? Getting arrested for petty theft and then calling me for help?” You asked sarcastically, though you understood him more than you’d admit. The need to be independent, completely self sufficient. The sinking feeling you’d get when you had to ask for help with something… you still felt that, too.
Your brother was quiet for a moment. Long enough that dread started to build up inside of you again.
“It’s not petty theft.” He said finally. “It’s grand theft. And accessory to assault. The guy I was working with went a bit rogue.”
“Jesus.” You sighed. “How long?”
Another long silence.
“How long, Leo?”
“10-15 years.”
You could practically see the tears falling from his eyes in your head, and you knew just by his tone he wasn’t calling for money. Not this time. You could see Alexia out of the corner of your eye, hovering in the doorway uncertainly.
“I… I signed the papers, to give you custody of Will. To make it easier to take him back to Spain with you. He’d be yours, and I know it’s a lot to ask, and if I had any other option, I would, but the only other option is putting him in the system, and I don’t want that for him. I don’t. I’m so sorry to ask this of you, really I–”
“It’s okay.” You breathed. “It’s alright. Of course, I’ll take him. Of course I will.”
Alexia moved closer, resting a hand on your shoulder once she noticed the tears in your eyes. You let her anchor you, suddenly very sure that this was it with her. Today had been the last nice day you’d have with her, and you hadn’t even known it.
But there wasn’t a question of whether you’d do it or not.
“Are you sure? With your career and–”
“I can make it work.” You said. “I’ll make it work.”
“Okay.” Leo replied, sounding overwhelmingly relieved. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I wish I–”
“I’ll be there as soon as I can to get him.” You cut in, unwilling to hear another apology. It wouldn’t fix anything.
Leo gave you the name of the woman to call, before saying goodbye and hanging up. Even after the call ended, you remained frozen, thinking through all the details, all the things you needed to do, unsure where to start.
“Amor?”
Right. That’s where you had to start.
You turned to Alexia, your face completely impassive. It was the face you made when the team lost and you were upset, or when you got hurt and didn’t want to cry. It was you running from vulnerability, and it had been a long time since Alexia had seen you make it towards her. She’d thought you were past this.
“My brother was arrested. I’m getting custody of his son. Will. He’s 5. I’m going to bring him back to Spain with me.” You spoke robotically, eyes fixed on a point on the wall just beyond Alexia’s shoulder.
“Oh… oh wow.” Alexia breathed, nodding her head slowly as she took the information in.
“It’s a good thing I didn’t get rid of my old apartment. I’ll move my stuff when I get back, you don’t need to worry about any of it. I’ll move back in there and–”
“Why would you do that?” Alexia interrupted, her face twisted with confusion. You looked at her for a moment, her brown roots growing out and the oversized t-shirt she had on. It was soft, your favorite for her to wear because you loved the way the fabric felt on your skin when she held you.
God this was hard.
“I… I won’t do this to you, Ale. I won’t. You don’t need this, but I have to–”
“No. Stop. We are not breaking up, and you are not moving out.”
You turned away from her when you saw the tears in her eyes, clenching your fists tightly and taking a few slow deep breaths. She was making this so hard, but you should have known she would.
“Alexia,” you began, your voice abruptly cutting off when the midfielder gently grabbed you by the shoulders and turned back towards her.
“No. No.” She repeated, shaking her head over and over. “Do you love me?”
You exhaled sharply, desperately wanting to wipe the tear off her cheek. To cradle her face in your hands, and kiss her frown away. You should lie, that would be the best choice. But you couldn’t bring yourself to do so.
“I do, Ale. I love you so much. That’s why–”
“Then that’s it. You love me and I love you and people who love each other do not break up.” Alexia said firmly, her lip trembling even as she bit it to make it stop.
“Alexia, please. It’s okay. You don’t have to do this with me, I could never ask you to.”
“You are not asking. I am telling you. I am not going anywhere, and neither are you. You bring Will here and we’ll figure it out together. Together, amor.”
She moved closer, her hands cradling your cheeks, wiping your tears away just as you’d wanted to do with hers. Somehow, she was convincing you. Like she always did. Whenever it felt too unbelievable that she loved you, whenever you became absolutely convinced that you’d tricked her or something, and tried to leave for her. She always convinced you to stay, because she knew you never really wanted to leave her.
“It’s gonna be a lot.” You murmured, your hands finding their way to her waist, your body giving in before your brain did. “It’s gonna be really hard, especially with work.”
“We can do it. Together.” Alexia promised, leaning forward to dust a kiss across the tip of your nose. “I love you. I’m not going anywhere. We’re going to do it together, okay? Don’t push me out. Please.”
“Okay.” You allowed, finally giving in and leaning into her. She wrapped her arms around your body, squeezing so tight it almost hurt.
“Promise me? No pushing me away.” She whispered into your ear.
“I promise.” You breathed the words back, knowing, somehow, that you wouldn’t break this promise. Never before had you gone back on something you’d promised Alexia, and you didn’t intend to start now.
The plane ride had been long, and though you were already exhausted, you hadn’t slept a wink. You were wide awake when the plane took off, and wide awake when it landed hours later. Some sleep would have really done you some good, but there was nothing to do about that now.
It was really an amalgamation of all of your least favorite things. The social services office was just as bad as you remembered it. Just as… lonely, regardless of how incredibly crowded it was. It was overly beige, from the walls down to the outfit the woman sitting across from you was wearing. Susan. Even her name sounded beige. Then, there was the paperwork. An endless pile of it on the desk in front of you. Your hand was starting to cramp from signing, and all you wanted was to see Will. Physically see him, make sure he was okay. He was somewhere in this building, surrounded by strangers. It was impossible not to picture him, all small and scared in an office, wondering if you were really coming for him.
You remembered that feeling. No one had ever come for you and Leo.
But you were here for Will. You were here for him, and it didn’t matter too much that he barely knew you; at least, that's what you told yourself.
You were his aunt that lived far away in Spain, that sent at least three presents for his birthday every year, and three more for Christmas. You talked to him on the phone every so often, and Leo liked to send a picture of Will wearing your kit every few months. He liked dinosaurs and crafts, and he adored your brother. Will’s mom had never been in the picture; you’d never met her, never even gotten Leo to tell you her name. It was just the two of them, and you knew it was hard. You didn’t know it was this hard for your brother, though. You’d have stepped in much sooner if you’d known.
Signing the last piece of paper, you inhaled deeply and slid it back across the desk towards Susan.
“Okay! That’s everything in order. It would be a lot more complicated if your brother hadn’t signed over his rights. Great foresight of him, to have the paperwork all ready!”
Yeah. Great foresight. Leo clearly possessed that.
“I’ll go get Will! Like I said before, he’s been having a tough time, but the minute he arrived here he asked for you, telling us he was supposed to make sure that his Aunt came for him if anything ever happened to his Dad. I think he’ll settle once he finally sees you.”
Susan smiled kindly, stepping away from the desk and briskly walking down the hall.
The words settled something in you that worried Will wouldn’t want to go with you, while at the same time, making you so incredibly frustrated. Leo could make sure to prepare Will for this exact situation to occur, yet he couldn’t avoid committing felonies?
Before you could think too hard about what to say or do, there he was. Walking slowly down the hall next to Susan, a blue dinosaur clutched tightly to his chest. His brown hair fell messily around his head, in a way that reminded you of your brother. He was small, wearing a sweatshirt and shorts and a pair of velcro shoes. Small and scared, his face creased with anxiety and fear, even as he approached you.
“Here she is!” Susan said encouragingly, gently nudging Will closer when he came to a stop just in front of you. He was gazing up at you with wide, unsure eyes, and you could see tear tracks on his cheeks, his eyes red and puffy. He was so small.
It was instinctual, something you didn’t even know you possessed that had you kneeling down and opening your arms. Will’s forehead un-creased just slightly, and he rushed forward, wrapping his arms tight around your neck.
“Hey, buddy. Everything’s okay now. I’ve got you.” You whispered, holding tightly to the little boy that was clinging onto you as if you were the last stable thing in the world. And you supposed you were; in his world at least.
Will exhaled shakily. For the first time in two whole days, he felt just a tiny bit safe. He didn’t know you well, granted, but his Daddy had always told him that if there was an emergency, to make sure to call you. He’d taught Will how to click your contact and call. Will hadn’t been sure you’d come. You lived far away, and he barely ever saw you. The two of you were strangers practically. But Leo had always told Will that you’d come for him if he needed you. And Leo had never broken a promise to Will before… Well not until the other day, he’d waited in the office at school for a whole hour after the bell rang. When someone came for him, it wasn’t his Dad. It was a police officer with a mustache and a mean face, and all Will could do was cry, and make sure that the police officer knew he had to call you. And though the details Will had been given were few, he knew his Dad had been bad and he was in trouble. Big trouble. The police officer had sounded all angry and stern when he’d told Will this, softening only slightly when Will asked when he’d get to see his Dad again.
The police officer hadn’t answered, instead telling Will that he was being taken to the social services office, where he’d wait to figure out what the next steps were.
Will had waited for you, and even though the nice lady had told him you were coming, it took a while. More than one day, but he couldn’t quite remember. It felt like forever.
But now you were here, and you’d given him a hug that felt like the hugs his Dad gave him, and he didn’t feel like he had to try to be brave anymore. Your arms didn’t loosen around him even as you stood up, and Will let himself relax. Just for a moment.
“We going to Spain?” Will wondered, gripping two of your fingers when you held out your hand towards him. He trotted along next to you as you headed from the social services building down the block to your hotel.
“Yeah. Barcelona.” You affirmed. Luckily, Will had been able to talk to Leo on the phone, and Leo told him what the plan was.
“Bar-sa-lonuh? Or Spain?”
“Barcelona is a city in Spain.” You clarified. “We’ll go there on a plane tomorrow morning.”
“Is it a big plane?”
“It’s a pretty big plane. Have you ever been on a plane before?”
Will shook his head, brown curls blowing backwards slightly in the wind.
“It’ll be fun. We’ll get snacks and… pick out a few movies to watch. And you can sleep if you want to.”
“Snacks and movies?” Will repeated.
“Yes! Does that sound fun?” You tried to sound excited even though there wasn’t really anything you were dreading more than the long flight with a five year old.
Will just shrugged, his hand tightening around your fingers. You shifted the strap of his big duffel bag so it was further up on your shoulder, stopping just outside the hotel and bending down so you were eye level with him.
“I know it’s a lot of change, Will. And I know you don’t know me very well but–”
“My Daddy said you’re nice. And that you’ll take good care of me.” Will whispered, tearing up as he remembered the phone call he’d gotten to have with his father this morning. Leo had called you right after, himself trying to hold it together as he explained he told Will that you were coming for him.
“I’m going to do my very best to take good care of you. We’re gonna figure it out together, alright?”
Will nodded slowly, taking a deep breath and rubbing at his eye with his fist. “Alright.”
You figured that was the best you’d get, for now.
“Tia?” Will whispered. You turned, finding him all tucked into one of the double beds, the covers pulled up to his chin. He was so small, the dinosaur pajamas he’d pulled out of his duffel bag a bit too big on him. ‘Dad said I’d grow into them if I ate my vegetables’, Will had said. Your brother was many things, and a good father was one of them. He was giving you a huge responsibility and huge shoes to fill.
Refocusing on Will and not how much he looked like your brother, you smiled, walking over and sitting on the edge of the bed.
“What’s up, buddy?” You asked, hesitating for a moment before reaching and out brushing one of his curls away from his face. His whole body relaxed at the motion, and he looked a bit more confident as he opened his mouth to speak again.
“Do we have to go to Spain? We… we can’t stay here?”
Your heart twisted in your chest. You thought of your brother's words on the phone the past few days. He’d repeated it a few times, as if knowing the doubt you’d carry.
You can’t leave Spain. You have a career and a life there. Will speaks a bit of Spanish, and he’ll adjust. He needs to be with you, and you need to be where you’re going to be happy. That will be the best thing for him.
Leo spoke with a wisdom in his voice that used to infuriate you, but you’d decided to trust the big brother voice, this time. Because he was Will’s dad, and he knew what Will needed.
“We have to go to Spain.” You confirmed. Will frowned, an unhappy look on his face that tore at your emotions. “I know, it’s going to be an adjustment. But your Dad told me to take you there, and he always knows best, right?”
Will looked conflicted. “I like it here.”
“I know, I know you do.” You paused, thinking once again back to your brother's advice.
Talk to him like he’s a person, not a baby. He’s a smart kid, he’ll understand.
“I play football in Spain. It’s my job there, so that’s where we have to be for now. But you’ll like it, I promise. It’s warm and sunny and it has really good food. Alexia is there, and I know you’ll love her, and she’s so excited to meet you in person.”
Thankfully, Will had met Alexia over facetime before, and knew that you were together. You didn’t have to introduce the idea to him, as he’d somehow already seemed to know it wouldn’t just be the two of you when you arrived in Spain.
Will looked doubtful, and you could see the anxiety clearly written across his face. His features were so like Leo’s, and it was the same face your brother always had when he was nervous about something. The same face you had when you were nervous about something.
“Why don’t you ask me questions about Spain? And I’ll answer them, and then you’ll know more before we get there.”
Will was a talker, that much you knew. And so the questions began, about the food in Spain, about school in Spain, about the team you played for, and whether there were dinosaur toys there. Question after question, until you laid down on the bed next to him, eyes barely open.
“Do you live in a house in Spain?” Will asked, his energy still in full force as he asked what felt like the 500th question of the evening.
“An apartment, but you’ll have your own room.”
“And Alexia lives there?”
You nodded groggily.
“Does she speak Spanish?”
“She does, but she also speaks English.”
Will hummed. “My Dad was teaching me some Spanish for when we met Alexia. He said your tia taught you both Spanish and that's why I call you tia because that’s Spanish for aunt.”
At this, you cracked a smile, forcing your eyes open as you nodded. “That’s true. We lived with our tia for a while and she taught us Spanish.”
“Is it hard to learn? I’m not very good.” Will wondered, his questions seemingly endless.
“Mmm, not hard. You’ll pick it up quickly, especially at school and with Alexia helping you with it.”
“Is she nice?”
“She’s very nice.” You promised, eyes flying open when you realized you had a text from Alexia you hadn’t yet read or responded to. Will yawned hugely as you pulled your phone out of your sweatshirt pocket, and you smiled down at him again.
“Go to sleep, buddy. I can answer more questions tomorrow.”
With a small grunt of agreement and another yawn, he rolled over. Right into you, his head resting against your arm. It was indescribable, the soft feeling that filled your heart. Soft adoration, even as you stilled the left side of your body completely so as not to disturb him.
You didn’t know much about kids, but it seemed you knew enough. For now.
Finally, you opened Alexia’s text, tears pooling in your eyes as you read her words.
Amor! I hope everything is going well. You’re doing great already, I am sure of it. I stopped at the store and got a few things for Will. You said he likes dinosaurs, sí?I love you, I’ll see you tomorrow. I can’t wait to hug you.
God, you couldn’t wait to see her. It wasn’t very odd for the two of you to spend a night apart, but something about this felt different. You missed her deeply, fully, needed her to hold you and promise everything was going to be okay. The anxiety of how this whole new life would work was almost overshadowed by your excitement to see her again.
Almost.
Will was a pretty well behaved kid, you’d learned. Very sleepy when he woke up in the morning, but he snapped right out of it when you asked him what he wanted to download to watch on the plane. He very eagerly selected three disney movies, and you realized with a pang to your chest that all three were movies you and your brother had grown up on.
All three were Leo’s favorites, if you remembered right.
And now they were Will’s.
Not being the biggest fan of crowds, the airport clearly made your nephew nervous. He fidgeted his little hands together, walking so close to you that he ran into you every time you stopped. His hand would dart out to grab onto the hem of your t-shirt whenever anyone got too close to him, and he almost cried when the security agent made him walk through the metal detector by himself.
You figured this made sense, that after his whole world had been turned upside down, of course he’d attached himself onto the most stable thing he could find. That happened to be you. It was just… odd. Something you weren’t used to. The checklist you’d made on your phone helped, reminding you to ask Will if he had to go to the bathroom, if he was hungry or thirsty, if he had any more questions about the plane. It was more than terrifying, honestly, that you were suddenly fully responsible for this small boy.
There was stress, of course. But there was also something so… incredibly different in the way Will pressed his face to the glass of the plane window, staring wide eyed as the plane took off. For every moment you worried you were messing up, even in the first 24 hours, there were 10 moments where Will rested his head against your shoulder or reached for your hand, or offered you one of his animal crackers with a smile that had you convinced that for your nephew, maybe you could do this.
“I can walk, Tia.” Will mumbled, squirming slightly in your arms.
You chuckled, rubbing his back softly. “It’s okay, buddy, it’s crowded and I know that makes you nervous.”
You’d picked him up a moment ago, after noticing how terrified he looked at the massive crowds making their way through the airport. It was a struggle to wrangle both of your bags in one hand, while holding Will in the other, but you didn’t want him to be uncomfortable. You took two steps towards the exit before you had to stop and readjust, wishing you had another pair of hands here to help.
Alexia had texted that she was there, and though you’d assumed that meant she was outside in her car, your eyes met hers across the bustling baggage claim before you had to take another step.
Your whole body practically sagged with relief, your bags falling to the ground where you stood as Alexia made her way over to you both, a concerned and sympathetic smile on her face.
“Mi amor,” she greeted, softly kissing your temple and pulling you into as much of a hug as she could manage with Will still in your arms.
“Hi.” You choked out, almost in tears at the sight of her. Here, in front of you, at the perfect time. With a smile on her face, already reaching for your bags.
“Hi, Will.” She said gently.
Will peaked out from where his face had become hidden in your neck, relaxing a bit when he saw the semi familiar face.
“Hi.” He whispered back, turning his face back in towards you and shutting his eyes.
“He’s tired.” You explained, but Alexia just waved you off, beginning to lead you from the airport to the parking garage. It was much easier now that you only had to worry about carrying Will, who was quickly becoming dead weight in your arms as he drifted off.
“Of course he is, it has been a long few days. I bet you’re exhausted too. We can go home and go right to sleep, sí? We can worry about anything else tomorrow.”
You nodded your agreement, not even wanting to contemplate the state of your to do list at the moment, though it was getting harder and harder to ignore.
As you arrived at the car, you shouldn’t have been surprised by the car seat perfectly installed in the back of Alexia’s car. You’d mentioned needing one to her, but for some reason… you half expected her to forget. Or get the wrong one. You weren’t sure why, but it was just something that you thought you’d have to do.
Yet when you opened the door to the back seat, it was all done for you. The perfect size for Will, buckled in correctly and everything. You carefully deposited him in the seat and buckled him in, before turning to Alexia, once again with tears in your eyes.
“Thank you for getting that.” You mumbled, shutting the car door as quietly as you could.
“Of course.” Alexia said easily, her lips curving into a smile as she opened her arms for you. You practically collapsed into them, gripping tight to your girlfriend as she did the same to you.
“I missed you so much.” You cried.
“I missed you too, mi amor. You have no idea.” Alexia whispered back, her hand threading through your hair as she just held you for a moment. Eventually she leaned down to press her lips to yours. You kissed her back, taking in the feel of her hands as they cupped your jaw, her fading blonde hair tickling the side of your face.
When you pulled back from the kiss, she was still gazing at you so lovingly it made your heart burst.
“Let’s get you both home.” She suggested, and you nodded your agreement, needing nothing more than to be home in that moment.
The relief you felt when you finally stepped back into your apartment wasn’t complete relief. Because you were home, but everything was different. There was a whole other person that had to fit into your life now, and you didn’t even know where to begin carving out a space for him. There was figuring out a school that could accommodate a five year old that spoke very little Spanish. Then there was finding childcare for when training didn’t perfectly align with school, or when the team was traveling. Would you bring Will with for away games?
The issues you needed to address were seemingly endless, but most urgently was that the extra bedroom was not fit for a child. It had a double bed, which would work for now, but didn’t leave much room for anything else. What did a kid even need in his bedroom?
Toys, of course.
Books.
A desk?
A dresser? Or would the closet be enough?
God he would need more clothes.
And food that he'd like to eat.
And shampoo and conditioner for kids. Those were different from adult hair products, right?
That was most urgent, you decided. Making your home a home for him.
“We should go shopping tomorrow.” You murmured, shifting Will in your arms a bit as you headed for the guest bedroom. He’d fallen asleep in the car and it was night, so it made sense for him to keep sleeping.
What time did kids his age go to bed? 7? 8? You had no idea. Another question to answer.
With a gentle hand on your back guiding you down the hall, Alexia hummed in agreement, but you missed the small smile on her face. “I bought a few things.” She reminded you.
Your assumption was that a few things were a pair of pajamas, a new toy. A book, maybe? But when Alexia stepped around you to push the bedroom door open, your jaw dropped.
A few things, apparently, was an entirely redecorated room. A beautifully redecorated room. The walls were no longer white; instead they were painted a soft green. A wooden twin bed sat in the corner, a green canopy hanging the tall headboard and footboard. The bed was covered in a green comforter, a soft throw blanket, and 4 different pillows. A long shelf sat just under the large window, filled with toys and books. There was a separate toy box next to the bookshelf, overflowing with even more toys; cars and books and dolls and stuffed animals. Everything. Wall decor, a rug, a dresser, a cozy chair in the corner next to a lamp.
Alexia had thought of everything. And if you’d had any doubts about her dedication to this, to you, to Will, you no longer did. Alexia had done what you’d been too preoccupied to think of and made Will a space that was entirely his own, a place he could feel safe and comforted. She’d made your home his home without a second thought.
Without a word, you walked further into the room, choking back a sob as you laid a still sleeping Will down carefully on the bed. He shifted in his sleep, snuggling close to the soft pillows as you draped the throw blanket over him.
When you finally turned back towards your girlfriend, she was hovering in the doorway, chewing on her bottom lip as she gazed at you worriedly.
“Too much?” She whispered.
You barely held back the scoff that would have been much too loud, crossing the room quickly and throwing your arms around her.
“No. Perfect. You're perfect. Thank you.” You mumbled into her neck, pressing kiss after kiss to the skin you found there. Alexia tightened her hold, walking the two of you backwards and out the door so you didn’t wake Will.
“Are you crying?” Alexia asked, her thumb tracing across your cheek bone as she leaned back from your embrace.
You sniffled pathetically, leaning back in to press your forehead to Alexia’s chest and steady yourself.
“I was just so overwhelmed and you did this and it’s perfect Ale. Thank you. Thank you.”
Alexia pressed a kiss to the top of your head, squeezing you tightly.
“You don’t have to thank me. I promised, no? I’m here. We are doing this together.”
“I love you.” You cried, overwhelmed with love and wonder at what an incredible person your girlfriend was. You’d already known, but she always found a way to surprise you, doing something so absurdly kind and thoughtful that you were struck all over again with how good she was.
“I love you too.” Alexia replied, swaying the two of you back and forth gently.
There were still a lot of unknowns. A lot of problems to solve and things to figure out. But you’d never been more sure that you could do it. It wasn’t ideal, but you had Alexia and that was certainly ideal.
JUST finished this so PLEASE tell me if you catch a typo also planning more parts to this but i'm VERY open to ideas if you have them :)

— IF I CAN’T HAVE YOU BABY
Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing: mattheo riddle x nott!reader
summary: you weren't quite used to the attention of other boys, and it seems your brother's best friend isn't too fond of it either
warnings: brother's best friend trope!! swearing, kissing, not much else, very much unedited
author’s note: i don't tend to stray outside of the marauders era characters buuuut i've been a bit obsessed with mattheo and theo recently so this was for my own selfish needs lol as always let me know what you think!!
Tumblr media
He had barely looked away from you all evening.
You knew the only reason Mattheo’s eyes had been fixed on you for the entirety of dinner was because of a certain type of attention you had unconsciously garnered on your first day back at school. Particularly male attention. It wasn’t any less disconcerting, however, knowing that your brother’s best friend was prepared to fist fight any potential romantic advances towards you because he was just as protective as your actual older sibling.
Your brother Theodore is no better, a displeased frown appearing every five minutes when he looks over to where you sit at the Gryffindor table.
“Merlin, boys are pathetic,” Ginny mutters, spearing a potato with her fork. “You go away for one summer and come back slightly prettier and they flock to you like bees to honey!” You’re about to weakly protest that she’s exaggerating, but at that exact moment you’re interrupted by a tap on your shoulder.
You slowly turn on the bench, reluctantly lowering your goblet of pumpkin juice to face Michael Corner, a Ravenclaw boy who you’d only ever spoken to when he was going out with Ginny.
“Hi, Michael,” you sigh, offering him a bland smile.
“Hello, Nott,” Michael replies, with what he probably thinks is a winning smile. “Had a good summer? I was just going to ask if you wanted to go on the first Hogsmeade visit of the term with me.”
You stare at him, unblinking. “Er- well, as… nice as that sounds,” you say slowly, not meaning a word. You glance at Ginny as pointedly as you can manage and raise an eyebrow. “I don’t quite relish the idea of going out with my best friend’s ex.”
“Oh! I, erm, I didn’t actually see you there, Ginny,” he stammers, laughing sheepishly. “My mistake.”
“Quite,” Ginny says drily, turning back to her plate of food.
“Well, er, see you later then,” Michael mumbles, nearly tripping over himself as he rushes back to the Ravenclaw table.
You bite your lip to stifle your giggles but it’s not long before you catch Ginny’s eye and the both of you erupt into fits of laughter.
“I can’t believe I ever went out with him,” Ginny groans, wiping her eyes.
“Was he always such a tosser or is that new?” you ask, snorting at the way Ginny scrunches up her face in embarrassment.
You’re still laughing when your eyes happen to pass over the Slytherin table just to focus on Mattheo.
You notice with a jolt that he’s looking at you again. This time, his eyes flick over to the Ravenclaw table for a second where Michael has settled back onto, then back to you and he quirks a brow quizzically.
Frowning, you mouth at him to stop in hopes that he ceases his scrutiny, just for him to roll his eyes and return to whatever one-sided conversation Blaise Zabini was attempting to engage him in. You hope you don’t look as flustered as you feel after realising Mattheo has just witnessed such an embarrassing encounter, but you’ve found over the years that you’re not the best at hiding the effects he has on you. Theo has never mentioned it in front of Mattheo as far as you’re aware, but he definitely hasn’t shied away from teasing you about the childhood crush you have on your brother’s closest friend. Not that you’ve ever admitted it to him anyway, and you’ve gotten a lot better at hiding it since nothing could ever come of it.
“Your brother and Riddle have been looking like they’re ready to halve the male population of Hogwarts since we got on the bloody train,” Ginny says, pulling you out of your thoughts.
“Tell me about it,” you sigh, cutting into your carrot a little more viciously than needed. “They keep looking over at our table. I feel like I’m on one of those Muggle reality television programmes Hermione was telling your dad about the other week.”
Arthur Weasley was absolutely transfixed when he was learning about reality television from Hermione during breakfast the week you both stayed at The Burrow, and although you zoned out after his sixteenth question about a singular programme, you feel as though you caught the gist of it.
“Hm,” Ginny agrees, grimacing at the memory. She had nodded off at the table during that conversation and fallen asleep on her slice of toast. “In fairness, that’s not really a new thing.”
“What, being watched by my two guard dogs?” you ask in a mock-serious voice.
“Yeah, but…” Ginny chews thoughtfully for a second before answering. “I’m not just talking about today, or even recently. Your brother mostly minds his own business. I’m talking about Riddle. He’s always looking at you, I noticed it last year. Wherever we are, kind of like he’s checking up on you,” she says like it’s common knowledge, shrugging. “It’s sweet, I guess.”
You blink at her, a little speechless.
“What?” Ginny frowns after a few seconds of your silence. You look at her with raised eyebrows, not really taking her seriously. In your first few years at Hogwarts, you had confided in Ginny regarding your silly, little girl feelings for Mattheo and she would read into every action he took towards you in an attempt to prove he liked you too. Obviously, he saw you as nothing but a younger sister figure and once you grew up a bit, Ginny had let it go too.
Ginny reads your dubious expression now and sets down her knife and fork to cross her arms. “Oh, for heaven’s sake. I’m serious! I’m not just saying it because you were helplessly in love with him until you were, like, fourteen.”
“Shush!” you hiss, thwacking her arm. “Why don’t you just get up on stage with Dumbledore and ask him to include that titbit of information for the entire school to hear in his speech!”
“Good idea,” she says, nodding seriously and starting to get up. You know she’s just teasing, but you start spluttering and frantically grab at her sleeve to sit her back down, causing her to topple onto you slightly. This sets you both off laughing again and you find it hard to stop for the rest of dinner and desert, thankfully staying far away from the topic of Mattheo. You also pointedly avoid looking at him again.
Once dinner is over, you head to the Gryffindor common room with the rest of your house and catch up with everyone for a while. After a couple hours of socialising and fifteen minutes of helping Neville Longbottom search for his pet toad, you head up to your dorm with Ginny and Lena, one of your other dormmates, to unpack.
As soon as you open your luggage, you search for your pyjamas and immediately change out of your robes and into a t-shirt and baggy shorts for comfort. You’re in the middle of unpacking some textbooks when you hear Lena whistle from behind you.
“I do not remember those pyjamas looking like that,” Lena comments, grinning at you. Rolling your eyes, you comply with her request to do a little spin and you can’t help feeling pleased when Lena and Ginny start whooping and hollering. “You’ve always been gorgeous, but you really grew up this summer, huh? Look at those legs!”
“Tell me about it,” Ginny pipes in, flopping down on her bed and abandoning her unpacked suitcase. “She came to stay for a week and Mum looked like she was going to cry every time she saw us. Something about ‘blossoming into young ladies’ or whatever bollocks.”
“You ‘blossomed’ last year,” you point out, and Lena hums in agreement. “I haven’t forgotten how Zacharias Smith fell off his broom trying to wave at you during Quidditch practice.”
Ginny groans and starts ranting about teenage boys again. Lena joins in and starts teasing her about how Harry Potter is the only boy she hasn’t complained about and you’re about to set down your belongings to help Lena dodge the pillows Ginny is throwing at her when a flash of green and silver in your suitcase catches your eye.
“Shite, I have Theo’s uniform,” you huff, grabbing the clothes out of your suitcase and sliding your slippers on. “That means he has mine and I am not dealing with this at seven in the morning. I’m gonna go drop this off, be back in a minute.”
Ginny says goodbye before resuming her pillow attack on Lena as you make your way out of the room and down into the common room. It’s nearly empty, with most people having gone to their rooms to pack and a quick glance at the clock tells you its past curfew. You decide to take the risk since you have a reasonable excuse, but you hope that if you do get caught, it isn’t by Filch or Snape.
By the time you’ve reached the dungeons, you thank Merlin that Theo had the sense to tell you the password for the Slytherin common room before dinner in case of emergency.
“Pureblood,” you mutter, fighting the urge to scoff when the door swings open. You enter the common room and brighten up when you see that the only students still hanging around are Theo and his friends. Your brother seems to have already started unpacking since he’s standing and holding your uniform, presumably about to come and find you. His friends all mumble polite ‘hello’s and he walks up to you with a smile.
“Oh, hey, I was just-” Theo cuts himself off when he properly looks at you and frowns. “Wha- Why are you wearing pyjamas out and about?”
“You’re wearing pyjamas too!” you exclaim, slightly embarrassed that your brother is doing this in front of your friends. They all turn to look at you again, hearing the indignation in Theo’s voice and you notice Mattheo suddenly sits up straighter. Suddenly aware of your bare legs, you tug down the material of your shorts, despite the fact they aren’t even very short to begin with.
“Oi. Stop looking at my sister!”” Theo snaps, glaring at Blaise, Draco, Crabbe and Goyle. You know the only reason they glanced at you in the first place is out of curiosity regarding Theo’s question, but Theo and Mattheo scowl at them all the same and they all start sputtering, Draco in particular when Pansy narrows her eyes at him. Theo sighs at you, quickly exchanging your uniforms. “Just- at least take something to cover up back to your room.”
“I’ll walk her back,” Mattheo says, out of nowhere. He stands up and makes his way over to you, face carefully blank. Theo nods, agreeing quickly before he ruffles your hair goodbye to go and finish packing. You’re too surprised by Mattheo’s offer to protest until you’re already out of the Slytherin common room.
“I don’t need someone to walk me back, you know,” you mumble after a minute of charged silence.
“It was either me or Theo,” he shrugs, completely unapologetic when his mouth quirks up in a smug smile. “And I know you prefer me.”
“You’re both equally annoying,” you say, rolling your eyes, happy that he’s talking to you like normal again. You hated it whenever Mattheo was serious – it was rarely ever towards you and you much preferred when his whole face lit up with a smile. He begins to tease you about your bunny rabbit slippers and you’re in the middle of pretending to be irked when you both run into Ernie Macmillan, a Hufflepuff prefect doing patrol duties.
“Hey,” Ernie offers you a friendly smile and gives Mattheo a brief, slightly nervous glance. While you prefer not to get into trouble for breaking curfew, Mattheo clearly couldn’t care less and his relaxed, yet intimidating stance must be off-putting to Ernie. Thankfully, you’re on friendly terms with the Hufflepuff and you give him an even brighter smile to make up for it, to which he beams at. “How was your summer?”
“Good, yeah! Erm, listen Ernie. We didn’t mean to be out at this time, it’s just that I accidentally had my brother’s uniform and needed to-”
“Oh, forget it. Don’t worry, I won’t dock you any points,” Ernie reassures you, waving off your excuses and you instantly relax. Ernie gives Mattheo another unsure glance before leaning in the tiniest bit closer to you. You try not to pay attention to how Ernie has been glancing at your legs and how Mattheo tenses up when Ernie starts speaking again. “I was actually wondering if you were available next weekend…?”
Ernie trails off when you don’t show any indication of replying straight away and you snap out of your surprise to say something, but Mattheo beats you to it.
“She’s busy then,” he says coldly, working his jaw. “Now, if you don’t mind, it’s late. Kindly get lost.”
“Wha- Matt!” you hiss, smacking his chest to which he barely flinches, nor does he look at all apologetic. “Ernie, I-”
“Never mind,” he says quickly, seemingly eager to just leave. “I’ll, er, see you later.”
You stand frozen in shock while Ernie rushes down the corridor and turns the corner, leaving you and Mattheo alone. Turning slowly, you look at him with barely contained anger.
“Why the hell did you do that?” you demand, voice sharp as nails. If it weren’t past curfew and you weren’t in the middle of a school corridor, you would most definitely be yelling. Mattheo stands with his hands in his pockets, clenching his jaw and his silence makes you even angrier. You accepted long ago that you’d never have a chance with him, but now he was getting in the way of you having a chance with anyone. It was completely unfair. “What if I actually wanted to go out with him?!”
Mattheo scowls at this, but his impossibly dark brown eyes flash with a hint of uncertainty. “Did you?”
“What?” you ask, impatient.
“Did you want to go out with him?” he says, voice low and dangerous. He walks forward, towering over you and you refuse to be intimidated so you start walking backward until your back is against the wall. Despite having cornered you, he maintains a fair amount of distance between you, leaving plenty of space if you want to move away. You don’t.
“That’s none of your business,” you say stubbornly, raising your chin and trying your best to keep your voice steady. Mattheo narrows his eyes and reduces the distance between you ever so slightly with another small step. You nervously keep talking. “I can go out with whoever I want.” Another step. “And you can’t just-” One more step. “Matt.” His shoes are flush with your slippers.
“What?” he whispers, tilting his head and looking at you calmly, while you feeling anything but calm. “I can’t just… what?”
The previously respectable distance has gone out the window and instead you barely have space to breathe with the way Mattheo is leaning in, head dipped toward you but never touching, hands resting on the wall either side of you. He leans in, eyes dropping to your lips and your heart leaps in your chest with anticipation, but he ghosts his lips over your jaw instead and the barely-there contact has you breathing unevenly.
“You can’t…” you exhale, trying to finish your sentence with some dignity and failing miserably. “You can’t just scare people off like an overprotective older brother.”
Mattheo stills, lifting his head enough to meet your eyes, but making no move to distance himself any further. He scoffs quietly. “Brother,” he says the word with a mildly disgusted scowl. “Is that what you think I want to be?”
“I- I don’t…”
“You don’t know,” Mattheo finishes for you, the corners of his mouth turning up, yet his expression is devoid of humour. “No, you don’t know how badly I wanted to hex Macmillan just now. How badly I wanted to try out some new, experimental spells on that fucking Ravenclaw earlier. But none of that had anything to do with brotherly feelings.”
“They were just being nice,” you say stupidly, with not a clue in the world as to why you’re defending them right now. If anything, you’re just confused.
Mattheo quirks a brow, tongue pressing against his cheek as he considers your words. “That Ravenclaw from earlier was talking about you on the train. He said he was going to ask you out at dinner because you’d ‘gotten hot’ over summer,” Mattheo sneers, like he’s suddenly regretting not hexing Michael Corner in the Great Hall. “They weren’t being nice.”
All of a sudden, you feel irritated because you have no idea why Mattheo is telling you any of this. “What’s wrong with a boy finding me attractive? Is that such a crazy idea?” you demand, part of you not wanting him to answer.
“Merlin, do I seriously have to say it?” he groans, sighing when you glare at him. Mattheo takes a breath, meeting your eyes and you marvel at the sincerity you see when he speaks. “You didn’t ‘get hot’ over the summer. You’ve always been beautiful and they’re idiots for not paying attention then.”
Your breath catches in your throat, whether it’s from emotion or from the close proximity with Mattheo, you aren’t sure. “You think I’m beautiful?”
Mattheo nods, leaning back in to brush his nose against your own, his breath mingling with yours. “Always have.”
You take this as a cue to grab the collar of his shirt and pull him in and the next thing you know, his mouth is firm against yours, and his hands are finally touching you, grabbing you by the waist and sliding up your back to hold you closer. You’ve thought about kissing Mattheo before, but the thoughts feel utterly stupid compared to the real thing. Mattheo kisses you fiercely, mouth sliding hot and wet against your own making you come alive and weakening you at the same time. He nips at your bottom lip and you gasp, causing him to smile into the kiss. Your hands are sliding up his chest to snake around his neck when a thought suddenly occurs to you and you pull away abruptly.
“Oh my God, Theodore,” you hiss, covering your mouth with your hand. Mattheo furrows his brows, looking a little dazed and confused. “What are we going to tell him?”
“He knows I’ve loved you since we were kids,” Mattheo says flippantly, waving you off and impatiently starting to lean in again, but you stop him with a hand on his chest. “What?”
“You’ve loved me since we were kids?” The words hardly register, but before you can feel any sort of elation, you mostly feel pissed off that your brother has clearly had his fun with the situation for years. “And Theo knows?”
“Yes,” Mattheo says slowly, as if he were talking to a child. He brushes the hair out of your face and his gaze turns a little uncertain when he speaks. “Er, this is hopefully the part where you say you feel the same way.”
“Well, of course I feel the same way,” you huff, still thoroughly annoyed at Theo. “He knew I was crazily in love with you too and the bastard was so irritating about it!”
You’re about three quarters of the way down a list of ways you want to get back at your brother when Mattheo gently turns your face by the chin to look at him. “As much as I’d love for you to plot against your brother right now, it’s kind of a mood killer thinking about him when I’m kissing you.”
“Sorry, sorry. Continue with the kissing.”
“How romantic,” he says drily. His smirk turns smug, however, when he processes your previous statement. “So… you were in love with me too. What was the word you used, again? Crazily? Crazily in love…”
“Don’t make me take it back, ‘cause I swear I will.”

Assassin Heir? Crime Fighting Furry? NOPE NO THANK YOU!
"Danyal, its time to end this game and return with me."
Danny should had known Clockwork had something in mind when he sent him on this mission. He knew he should had been suspicious of the time keeper when he noticed the little 'this is going to be fun' smile on his face when he sent Danny off into the portal.
"Get back here you demon spawn 2.0!"
But how was he supposed to know that he'd wake up in this world version of himself in a pit full of corrupted (AND NASTY) ectoplasim at the tender age of five or that when he swam up to the surface he'd be meeting face to face with what was apparently a cult.
"-O just spotted him a block away! I'll try to cut itty bitty bridie off!"
An Assassins Cult his, new to him, loving yet a little insane mother was in charge of (though during the few months he stayed in the compound he heard rumors and gossip from maids and others alike that if his grandfather returned from the dead he'll take over once again, no doubt punish Talia for creating another heir after the failure of the last one, most likely was going to kill Danny and that... that was can of worms Danny didn't wanna deal with yet)
"Ten bucks says they try to stab RR when we get the feral thing home"
"...Losers bet...."
Danny had lived with his mother for a while after being brought back from the 'dead' for apparently the first time, it turned out training a five year old with an actual sword and a dumbass hidden revenge seeking teacher was a terrible idea.
"I swear if this one tries to murder me like the others I'm asking Zatanna if there is a curse on me."
He dealt with her high demands of perfection, the endless training, and the constant comparisons to his apparent older brother Damain... Who didn't know Danny, or rather Danyal existed.
Nor did his father (when Danny, using his powers he's kept hidden since 'waking' up in this Realm, he sneaked his way around the base and discovered how he came into the world. And tbh he couldn't blame his mom how she made him, she was an assassin first and foremost, being naturally pregnant would had painted a target on her for to long... but he also felt it was unfair and an asshole move on his unsuspecting father as well)
"As your elder brother I demand you to stop running!"
Now don't get him wrong, he did like his new mother (total badass assassin lady and all that) and he knew she loved him in her own... deadly way. But yeah, she really shouldn't be taking care of kids. He could tell she struggled with wanting to be a normal mother but her first instinct after so many years was to be an assassin first.
Something she was trying to engrave into Danny with as well.
"Ah, hello Beloved. I see you've learned of our Danyal."
"Talia. Back away from him and leave Gotham now."
"I can not do that. The League needs an heir and since Damian refuses to return... I have decided to create a new one and I shall not be leaving until he returns with me."
"Talia."
Hence why when Danny, or rather Danyal al Ghul had gotten decent control over his powers he decided to leave the League. Again nothing wrong with the life his mom leads, to each their own, but he... really, really didnt want to be an assassin. Or an assassin heir.
So here he was, after almost a year on the run, using his powers and training to out smart and out maneuver his mother and her many band of Assassins, in Gotham. One of the last places he ever wanted to run to cause he knew his father and brother lived here.
It was just his luck that his mother had managed to intercept his train ride that passed into Gotham for a few hours and forced him to run into the city...
Add her assassins into the mix and running into Robin, who heard from Oracle his mother had been spotted chasing a young boy across the city, that same night.
After that it became a full on "catch me if you can" chase for not only his mother but for the batclan as well.
And after two whole days of chase, it seemed like the final showdown was about to begin because everyone was on top of this rooftop, his mother and her assassins on one side, his father and the batclan on the other and Danny well... he was right in the middle of all of it.
He just had to hope no one would notice him once the fighting started...

This one's a long read so I'm splitting it up. This part is roughly 2400+ words.
The Littlest Wayne: Uncertain Home
(Part 1/2)
Masterlist is Here!
Tumblr media
Uncle J'onn is looking at you curiously.
He's been doing that a lot, lately. When Daddy brings you to the Watchtower to be babysat so he can go save the world, one of his co-workers that they can afford to spare gets put in charge of keeping an eye on you. Usually it's Uncle Hal, but this time it's J'onn and he's in his natural form, which you don't mind. Green is your favorite color, and his whole body is green! He's nice and calm, and tells you lots of stories and plays any game you want, even if it's hard for him not to cheat and read your mind. He says it's instinct. You don't hold it against him because you still have fun.
Lately, though, when he talks to you, he tilts his head a bit. He usually does that when he can't understand something.
You wipe your face, checking for cookie crumbs. All clean. You search your shirt for any weird marks or stains. All clean. You scrunch your nose and puff out your cheeks, pouting.
"What's wrong, uncle J'onny?" You ask him. Daddy says the way to get honest answers from someone is just to be forthcoming (Dicky told you what forthcoming meant when you asked him later), so you are. "Did I do something wrong?"
That seems to snap his train of thought. J'onn shakes his head and goes back to sorting out the jigsaw puzzle pieces for you. You're good enough at this to do 100-piece puzzles, now, and when you get really stuck you don't even cry anymore!
"Nothing is wrong, Flittermouse," he says, watching you start putting the edges together first like Dami taught you. "You are simply...changing. Differences are not inherently wrong."
"What's inherably mean?"
"Inherently. It means instinctively, or something that is "set in stone." A rule that does not change. I am stating that change is not something that is always wrong. It's not a firm rule."
You pout and try to process all of that in your brain. It was a partial answer. Daddy says that means people might want to hide something from you.
"What's changing?" You ask him. "I got older a week ago. Is that what you mean? I'm four, now. Grandpappy says I'm getting so big and growed up. He says to not do that so fast. I dunno how, though. He's silly."
J'onn hums. His eyes look away from you as he considers what to say. You put one whole edge together before he speaks again.
"You know that I am not a human, correct?"
"Yeah, I know," you say. "I don't care. I love you. And auntie Diana. And uncle Clark. And uncle Barry. And —"
"Thank you," J'onn gently interrupts. "Do you also know that, sometimes, humans are born not entirely human? That sometimes they get special abilities?"
"Yeah, I know that," you repeat.
"I suspect that —" he cuts himself off, hesitates, then starts again. "Little one. You are showing signs of being one of those humans with special abilities."
"I am?" You ask. You perk up. "Can I fly?!"
You immediately abandon the puzzle and climb onto your chair, about to jump off of it to try and fly around, but J'onn catches you by the back of your shirt before you can hit the ground.
"You cannot."
"Aww...then I don't wanna be a megahuman," you complain, stomping your foot.
"Metahuman."
"Whatever."
"I am sorry," J'onn says, "I did not mean to upset you. I do think you are developing powers, however."
"Not fly powers?" You frown.
"No, not flight powers."
"Boring," you say, blowing raspberries. J'onn cracks a smile at your antics and you giggle. "Help me do the puzzle, please!"
"Alright," he relents, sorting more pieces for you. You're both quiet for a while, and you get the whole frame done before he speaks again.
"Little one. Do you know your father's rule about metahumans?"
"Yeah," you say, grinning, because you're a great listener. You pitch your voice down and make it scratchy. It's adorable in your four-year-old tone. "No metas in Gotham. I am Nighttime. Raaahhh."
J'onn huffs in amusement. "Right. He usually means what he says, does he not?"
"Yeah," you agree, "daddy is a bad liar. He lied and said he didn't eated the last cookie once, but he did eated it. Alfie was mad, 'cause it was for Dami, but Dami didn't care. He likes brownies more than cookies. I like brownies, too."
"I figured," J'onn says. He's not looking at you again. This time he's frowning.
"Do you want brownies?" You ask, figuring that was the issue. "I don't have any. I can ask for some when Daddy comes back. I'm good at sharing, 'cause I'm a good noodle, like Jay says."
"No, but thank you for offering to share. Jason is right, you are a good noodle."
You preen. "I know!"
J'onn drops the subject again and helps you complete the puzzle. You squint at every piece in concentration and politely ask him if he can dim the lights so you can work better. He complies, and after another hour and a half, you have a completed image on the table.
"Yay! We did it!"
The sounds of chatter and footsteps appear down the hall moments later, and you spring to your feet in delight.
"Hello!!!" You shout.
A chorus of "hello!" greets you in return from multiple heroes, and the rest of the Justice League files into the room one by one. They don't look too roughed up, so the mission wasn't very dangerous. That's good. You stand by the door and offer them hugs. Everyone complies, to your endless delight.
"Daddy!" You cheer when you see him, running and hugging Batman's legs. He scoops you into his arms and you grin and point at the table. "Uncle J'onny and I dided a whole puzzle! I didn't give up!"
"Good job, Mouse," Bruce says, reaching out to adjust the light. "You did it in the dark?"
"Yeah," you grin, kicking your feet. "Did you punch bad guys?"
"I did."
"Did you win?"
"Yes."
"Can we have ice cream?"
"Maybe after dinner." He carries you down the hall and towards his temporary quarters, the place he'll stay after a particularly tough mission when he can't make it home right away, and deposits you gently on the bed. "I have to debrief with everyone, and then we can pack up and go home."
"Okay, daddy," you say, already digging through the nightstand for a toy to play with. "I stay right here!"
"Good job," he says again, kissing the top of your head, and leaves you alone with a small wave.
--
The next time you need to be at the Watchtower, it's with Uncle Clark and Auntie Diana. The mission wasn't a super dangerous one, so they both got to stay behind and entertain you.
Today, you're a cashier at your world-famous grocery store. You have the best ingredients all over the world.
"Welcome to the groshy store, what do you want stranger?" You demand, getting into character. Clark looks mildly offended.
"Whoa, hello. That's a lot of 'tude for a paying customer," he says.
"You didn't buy nothing yet! Whataya want!"
"Uh. Some carrots please."
"All out."
Clark narrows his eyes at you. "Can you check in the back?"
You turn around. You turn back.
"All out. Whataya want!"
"You barely looked!" He insists.
"FRESH OUTTA CARROTS, BUB. WHATAYA WANT."
"Oh my goodness, now there's yelling. I think I need to speak to a manager."
"Okay!" You shuffle across the room and grab Diana's hand, leading her back to Clark. "This is the manager. Auntie, tell him all the carrots are gone. He can't have any."
Diana covers her mouth to stifle her laughter. "You heard them, stranger. There are no carrots here."
"Well, aside from the blatant nepotism, auntie, I think you're hiding the carrots from me," Clark huffs, crossing his arms. "I need them for my soup. Guess I'll go to the grocery store across town. I hear they're nicer."
"No," you gasp, "wait. Okay maybe I have one secret carrot. I go get it."
You leave their giggling forms and run over to the toy box that was set up for you on the watch tower, thrusting your hands inside to dig around. You squint your eyes, but all the bright colors are hard to distinguish properly. In the dark spaces, deeper into the box, is where you cast your focus. Instinctively, you follow the trail and close your hand around a plastic carrot. You lift your hand triumphantly.
"Okay, got it!" You cry, only to startle when you find both Clark and Diana kneeling beside your toy chest. Diana picks you up around the waist and takes several steps back, and Clark's eyes turn that funny shade of blue they do when he's using x-ray vision. "Umm, I gotted the carrot already. It's in my hand."
"Are you injured?" Diana asks you, expression deadly serious. You frown and shake your head. "You're certain? I could sense something in that box with you."
"No, I'm fine," you promise. Clark stands up and his eyes go back to normal. He shrugs, brows furrowed.
"There's nothing in there but toys."
"Yeah," you nod, "toys and dark spots."
Both heroes look at you. You squirm in Diana's hold shyly.
"Um, want to pay for the carrot?" You ask, holding it up. "It's only ten dollars. Orrr one lollipop." You whisper conspiratorially. "I can be bribed."
Diana and Clark exchange glances. Clark gingerly takes the carrot from you and puts it back in the toy box.
"Sold. Let's go to the kitchen and pick out which flavor you want."
You grin, forgetting about the game, and Diana puts you on the ground so you can follow excitedly after them. With a couple "pretty please's" and your lethal puppy dog eyes, you even manage to get two lollipops. You ask to be hoisted onto the counter so you can swing your feet as you enjoy the candy, and both heroes perch on either side of you.
It's quiet for a while. It feels like that weird, anticipatory quiet you felt with Uncle J'onny, but you don't know what for, so you wait for one of them to speak. You finish off one whole sucker and open the second one when it happens.
"Mouse?" Clark eventually asks, "can you explain what you meant about your toys? That there are dark spots in there?"
"Yeah," you say, "shadows. Dark spots. Light not touching."
"And you can...feel shadows?"
You hum, thinking it over. "Um...yes. Kind of."
Clark and Diana look at each other again. They're frowning. You frown.
"Can you tell us what you mean by that?" She asks.
"Um. I wanted the carrot, for uncle Clark," you say, "so he can buy it at my groshy store. And the dark spots showed me where it was, and I grabbed it."
"Did they also help you complete the jigsaw puzzle, when you were with J'onn?" Diana asks. "It was quite dark when we got back." You nod.
"Yeah. Easier to do in the dark. It's not cheating!" You blurt. "I didn't cheated!"
"Okay, ya' didn't cheat," Clark agrees, gently patting your back. There's a slight drawl in his words which usually shows up when he's stressed out. "We're just curious, is all, darlin'. Seems you've got a... A special talent, we can call it."
"It's a power. They're a metahuman, Kal," Diana says simply, "and you know Bruce's rule."
The rule? Which one? Always brushing your teeth before bedtime? Or maybe no sweets until you finish your dinner? Hmm, but you haven't had dinner yet. That doesn't make sense.
"No metas in Gotham. I'm very aware, Diana."
"Then you see the problem."
Oh. Now you think you know why uncle J'onny was upset that day.
"Now wait a minute," Clark says. He looks genuinely angry, which confuses you. Did they not like that you could ask the dark for help? They had superpowers, too. You figured they would be happy. "They're his kid."
You are. You're Daddy's little Flittermouse, scampering around and bringing joy. That's what everyone tells you. They love you.
"You've seen how hard he works to keep us out of Gotham," Diana says. "We can be trusted to babysit, but we can't enter the city? What does that tell you?"
"That's different. He's territorial, we all know that. He's not a monster, Diana. He would never hurt them —"
"I'm not saying he is. I'm not saying he would. But I am saying that he doesn't bend his own rules. He does not make exceptions."
Oh.
You sit almost numbly on the counter and watch Clark and Diana start to argue over your place in Gotham. Over your place at home.
You think about Daddy's rule about no metas in Gotham. You think about your new ability to interact with shadows.
Oh.
The lollipop tastes like ash on your tongue and the tips of your fingers feel like tv static. When you blink, your eyes sting as they well up with tears. You've been so good about not throwing fits, about not being a crybaby, about being as strong as your super cool daddy and brothers and grandpa.
But you can't call them that anymore, can you? They don't want metas in Gotham, and that's what you are, now. You can't live with your family anymore.
Large, fat tears roll down your cheeks and your bottom lip wobbles. You whimper and both Diana and Clark whip their heads around to look at you in shock.
"No, oh no, don't cry," Diana coos, "you don't need to worry. Your father isn't —"
You bat her hands away when she reaches for you and jump off the counter, running underneath Clark's cape. They don't catch on to what you're doing in time.
Clark practically rips it off and fans it on the floor, floating above it with wide eyes. Diana kneels next to the fabric and frantically pats it, searching for you.
But there's nothing. You've fled into the shadow Clark's body cast and allowed the darkness to swallow you.

You, Oscar and Hugh
You and Hugh have stared in the most talked about movie of the year, so, for the biggest night in Hollywood, the two of you are all people can talk about.
[based on the request for oscars night. I had so much fun writing this!!!! genuinely, how Hugh didn't even get a nomination for Logan is a crime! I'm working on another request for Logan and I've got like dozens of drafts but I loved this and wanted to get it out, I hope you enjoy!]
Tumblr media
The Oscars- Hollwood's most prestigious event. Neither Hugh, nor you were strangers to the hall. Hugh had not only been nominated but even hosted and you had been nominated and performed.
But this was new. Both of you had worked hard for your nominations. You and Hugh had been on opposite ends, he was the X-man, the Wolverine while you had been staring in Marvel movies since the very beginning, a friendly rivalry becoming of the two of you which came to fruition when you both stared in 'Deadpool and Wolverine.'
Now, the two of you were in the drama everyone had been talking about- mainly because it featured the hollywood couple. Hugh was nominated for best supporting actor while you had a nomination for best actress in a leading rule.
The camera's flashed as Hugh walked the carpet, alone. Everyone noted that fact. They'd assumed you would be on his arm but there was no sign of you.
He followed his agent as he led him to the row of interviewer's calling his name.
'First of all, I wanted to say congratulations on your nomination, your second nomination!' said the interviewer.
Hugh was all smiles, dapper in his sleek black suit and tie. 'Thank you, man, thank you.'
'So, what's going through your head at a time like this?'
'Honestly, not a lot. There's- there's almost too much to think about that I can't think of anything at all,' he chuckled.
'Are you proud of this movie?' he asked.
'I've never been prouder of a project before, and there's so many reasons why. Maybe that's obvious,' he grinned, thinking of one reason he was incredibly happy to be celebrating this movie. 'Not only does it touch on subjects that need to be touched on more, but we had an incredible direction, an amazing writing team and the rest of the cast.'
The interviewer gave him a knowing smile. 'By cast, are we-'
He didn't even have to finish before Hugh was closing his eyes and nodding. 'Oh yeah.'
Almost as if that was a cue, the yelling and flashing of the camera's intensified as many people turned to look.
'Oh, who's here?' asked Hugh, peaking over peoples heads until he saw. 'Oh.'
You stepped out the car like a star from old hollywood as you waved at the cameras and gave them your dazzling smile. You, like him, were dressed all in sleek black, looking effortlessly beautiful as you took to the carpet.
'There she is, the woman of the hour!' cheered the interviewer.
'Of every hour,' said Hugh, the microphone just picking it up. 'Pleasure to talk to you, man.' He hardly waited for a reply before he was making his way as casually as possible across the carpet to you.
You couldn't hear anything over the yelling, or see much over the flashing lights. All you could do is pose as your agent told you to and smile at the right direction.
You were led away but heard your voice be called from a corner. With a grin, you hurried over to Guillermo, the best part of Jimmy Kimmel shows. 'Hello handsome,' you winked, joining him quickly.
'Hello!' said Guillermo. 'Do you want a shot?'
You laugh. 'Do I want a shot- what? A shot of vodka?'
'We can do vodka,' he said, already prepping the shots.
'Let's do it, why not?'
Together, you take a shot and the camera focuses on you squinting and coughing. 'That was tequila.'
'Oh, sorry.'
'No, I loved it. I love you Guillermo!' you call as you slowly walk away.
Any other celebrity might have wondered why the crowd suddenly got louder, why camera's shifted. But they would've seen Hugh approach you in long strides, would've witnessed your grin as his arms wrapped around your back, careful not to ruin your dress.
They would have wondered what he was saying to you as he held your arms, soothing his thumb over the skin. They would've seen the simmer in your eyes and the way his arm slid around your waist effortlessly. You leant into him and the two of you posed for few pictures, offering them like rare jewels.
You and Hugh had never made it official, whatever it was between the two of you. But everyone knew what it was without words. There was only one word to describe the way Hugh looked at you. But you kept it private, he was some twenty years older and not long out of a marriage. Fans had watched you go from co-stars to friends to possibly (almost definitely) lovers. And they loved any crumbs you'd offer them.
The two of you did little interviews, only really stopping to talk to Amelia Dimoldenberg.
'Wait, the two of you are each other's dates?' she gasped.
'Amelia, I literally sent you an email asking to be my date,' you said. 'I didn't get a reply.'
Hugh stood back, looking between the two of you. 'You asked her, but I asked her first.'
Eventually, the two of you made it into the hall, sitting with the rest of your cast and crew for your movie. You all get situated, smiling and greeting any other friends.
Hugh and you were sat next to each other, something every camera in the room ate up. Since the rumours had started, you'd been all the people could talk about, and they'd be making stories of this for years. They snapped every shot of Hugh watching you talk, arm around the back of your chair, smiling and brushing parts of your hair away. Or how you'd reach out to brush his jacket or straighten his tie.
You couldn't keep your hands off each other.
Finally, the event started and the camera's were zoomed in on you and Hugh, which you didn't trust.
'Ladies and Gentlemen, Hollywood's greatest please welcome your host, Hollywood's worst... Ryan Reynolds!'
Everyone cheered but you and Hugh who's jaws dropped. People laughed at your reactions as you watched him walk out on stage, no less, in an 'I am a child of divorce.' and a picture of you and Hugh at the bottom.
Ryan waved at the two of you as everyone settled. You hid your face from laughing while Hugh was glaring playfully. 'Yeah! I know right! Who's Oscar did I have to shine to get my very own hosting gig! Wasn't yours Jackman, as you've never got one, you know?'
The crowd chuckled.
'And looks like you'll be getting one for, yep, let me check, contribution. Hey, win some you lose some, Wolvie.'
You were still chuckling loudly, the camera never leaving your reactions as the actors and crew laughed at you. So, you sat through Ryan's opening monologue as he spoke about each film individually, most with jokes, and most about how he nor Dogpool were nominated.
'Now, my good friends, well, what I like to call my parents, are both nominated for their movie. Yes, applause, please, they're very fragile,' said Ryan. 'Y/n plays a strong, confident woman who is only ever knocked down by Hugh's character and charm. But enough about what they get up to in the bedroom- this film-' Ryan halted, waiting for you and Hugh to stop playfully smirking at him and for the crowd to stop chuckling. He gave it a few serious words, before letting the rest of the ceremony play out.
You and Hugh were called out several times. When Halle Berry came out to present and gave Hugh a flirtatious wink that you gave back to her, blowing her a kiss.
When your friend Emma Stone tried to get you up to dance and you had to awkwardly shake your head.
Or when Hugh took to the stage, getting ready to take over hosting and you came up to drag him off as a joke.
When best supporting actor came up, they had last years best actress winner- Emma Stone- read out the names.
Hugh smiled and clapped when appropriate, but you seemed more nervous for him. A hand on his thigh, the other biting your nails. He was holding your leg, stopping your jerking knee.
'And the winner for best supporting actor, goes to... Hugh Jackman!'
The crowd erupted, but nobody as loud as you. You were on your feet before Hugh, arms thrown in the air as you cheer and clap.
Hugh's eyes, though he knew should be on the stage, fell to you as he pulled you in for a hug.
'I'm so proud of you!' you yell into his ear.
Hugh kissed your cheek, your temple, your hair, anything he can. Still hugging you, he reaches out behind you to shake hands with the director.
You pull away, kissing the back of his hand as he kisses your cheek again before rushing up to accept the award with a grin and a pep in his step.
He hugs Emma and offers her a polite kiss before taking to the microphone. 'Thank you! Thank you very much, everyone,' he says as they slowly stop clapping. They take their seats as he catches the director handing you tissues.
Hugh reaches into his pocket, taking out a piece of paper. 'I wrote this in 2013 but never got to use it, so excuse me if I just change the title of the film,' he joked as everyone chuckled. 'First, I want to thank the academy for this award. To the director, who had such an eye for art in this film, to the amazing writers for telling a story that needs to be told and should've been told a long time ago. It is because of your amazing work I am able to stand here and take only a fraction of the credit. To my agent, who thanks for getting me this job.
'To my children, I love you so much. I hope you think dad's a little cooler now. To my mum, whom I love and know is watching this at home. And to my dad, who I miss every day but I know... I know is here,' he choaks on the words as you watch, knowing you smudged your make up. Hugh turned to look at you and not the room, smiling through tears.
'And to you, my love, my reason for everything I do. You are the real heart of this movie, and you are my heart. My one and only. This is your award as much as mine. And I am yours. I love you so much, so, so much. I could stand up here and talk for hours about how much I love you, but I won't because I want to sit where you are and watch you win yours. I love you! Thank you!'
He holds up the award and blows you a kiss before walking off the side of stage.
You knew the camera was on you as you stood up again and cheered, a tear down your cheek.
Ryan walked back out on stage, this time, dressed in a cosplay of the iconic Wolverine suit. They all laughed. 'Gee, Hugh, thanks. I-I love you to.'
There was an award or two and a break before Hugh was rushing back to you all.
You leapt in his arms as he cradled you close, handing his oscar to the director. His hands roamed your back, fingers bruising the skin there as he kissed your shoulder and neck. 'God, I can't believe it, I am so proud of you, baby.'
Hugh pulled back, looking down at you. 'I love you. I love you so much.' he pecked your head. He wouldn't kiss you, you guys had a plan for the camera's to get that.
Not long after you'd taken your seats, the nominations for best actress in a leading roll were led out by Robert Downy jr.
Hugh held onto you tightly, tighter than you had him. It wouldn't feel right if he walked home with one when you, the real star, didn't. But you couldn't care, you were more than happy to sit with Hugh for the rest of the night, for the rest of your life.
'And the oscar, goes to...' Robert trailed off, opening the envelope and taking his time. He took in a deep breath. 'Oh, my lovely dear, get up here. Y/N!'
Just as they had for Hugh, everyone around you cheers. Your first instinct is to lean forward, holding your head in your hands and hiding as Hugh hugs you, pulling your body into his and yelling in glee. Finally, you pull back and hug the director, keeping a hold on Hugh's hand, you say things to the writers before turning and throwing an arm around Hugh's neck.
You're still gripping his hand as he helps you to the stage, you trembling so much you dare not go without support. He kisses your hand and hugs you once more before leaving you to walk up the stage. The cheers grow louder as you greet Robert.
The man was like your father, after staring in how many Marvel movies together. He hugged you tightly, smiling at you and bowing to present you with the oscar.
You approached the microphone, tears in your eyes as you did and everyone clapped. You waited until you could hear a pin drop until you took a deep breath. 'This is stressful as shit,' the people laugh. 'Oh my- thank you! Everyone! Thank you Robert! To all the other amazing, talented and intelligent nominees, I give a piece of this oscar to you all cause you were all amazing, truly!' you celebrate.
'Thank you to the director, to the writers, the cast, the crew. This story meant so much to me but more to all of you and you worked incredibly hard every day, your talent aspired me to work harder and thank you cause now I got one of these,' you show them the oscar, laughing. The crowd chuckle with you.
The camera cuts to Hugh, who watches you with stars in his eyes, reflecting in a pool of his tears.
'Oh god, who else. My agent, thank you. I appreciate it. Um, thanks to me I guess for being a good actress,' you shrug as the room laughs. 'I should probably thank Ryan or he'll force Hugh to do another Wolverine. Hugh,' you focus on him as the crowd chuckles. 'I am so in love with you. I didn't think a heart was capable of beating with so much love but it does- mine does- for you. All time. I love you more than words can describe, more than the whole sky. Thank you all! Thank you!'
Just as Hugh had, you head off to the stage, taking Roberts hand as he smiles and kisses your temple before leading you off.
Backstage, you and Hugh took to doing the interview together. They clapped as you appeared, hand in hand. Both of you looked dishevelled. Your hairs messy, Hugh's collar tugged and your dress crinkled at the end. Your lipstick was smudged too but you still managed some class. While Hugh looked like he'd been laid for the first time.
Still, you held onto each other with one hand and your oscars with the other.
'Hello!' greeted Hugh.
You giggled, hiding your face as Hugh coax's you to stand up, but laughs with you.
Many serious questions were asked as you and Hugh tried your best to pay attention.
'Y/N you looked great tonight, I just want to know what was the process of getting to look so good?' a man asked.
You chuckled, thinking about it as Hugh hid his grin, watching you. 'The process was... um... I took a shower, shaved just in case, you know, I got lucky tonight,' you nudged your hips with Hugh's smirking, 'I raided my friends wardrobe, found this old thing, it fit thank god. And um, yeah?'
Hugh barked a laugh as the crowd laughed at your antics, you having to bend over to laugh with him. Finally, he straightened up, wiping tears from his eyes. 'Sorry, what a night.'
'What a night,' you agreed. 'We've been celebrating so.'
The crowd again laugh, guessing just how the two of you have been celebrating.
As best you can, you answer a couple more questions before you were swooped away to take pictures, Hugh's arm falling lower and lower down your back until it was reasting above your ass.
Some reporter wolf whistled as you guys went and Hugh gripped you, bending his head to kiss you. It wasn't how you'd planned, but he needed to kiss you. Sure, your lips had been all around him less than ten minutes ago, but it wasn't enough, was never enough.
The two of you took your pictures with best actor and supporting actress. All four of you posing together, when it came to just you and Hugh, the two of you were laughing messes as you angled your oscars to kiss like a kid would with barbies.
Then, Hugh wrapped his fingers around the back of your neck and drew you in until he was kissing you, his lips moulding on yours, hand gripping you and camera's flashing.
The next day, Ryan was wearing a shirt of that iconic shot.
