Whenever I look at the legacies of Davy and Trevithick it’s just wild. Like here is a chemist who travelled Europe, came from a middle class background at the very end of the country, married a wealthy widow, became a baronet and was awarded the Napoleon Prize.
And here’s a guy who revolutionised steam power, made massive advances in mining engineering, couldn’t get anyone to fund him ever, died penniless and unknown
#the important thing is that they were both totally nuts#i saw Trevithick described as ‘The most Cornish man ever’ and like#YEAH?????#boy embodied his home county so well: massively under appreciated. incredibly valuable work. broke. written off and barely mentioned#meanwhile Davy by virtue of being impetuous enough to strong arm himself into where he wanted to be#and they were contemporaries! I have GOT to write about them#hey nobody’s written a play about Davy (yet) so who’s winning now#(I jest obviously)#look at my special little guys!!!#nobody cares about them!!!#I do tho#I need more mining and industrial history mutuals#but generally more ppl eating Cornish history (1750-1820s especially)#anyways#I’m having Thoughts#which is never a good thing
