JATP Analysis/Theory: Alex and Carrie

I know I need to stop but I am having way too much fun overanalysing this show. Besides I promised you all a Alex and Carrie post so here it is. So my newest theory is kind of to do with the phantoms unfinished business. All through out season 1 there has been this theme of connection, Julie’s connection to the boys, their connection to Julie’s mum, Julie’s connection to her mum, Luke’s connection to his parents etc. We also know that the phantoms have some burnt bridges, with their parents and with Bobby. Julie too also has a broken bridge between her and Carrie. I think their unfinished business is to mend all of those broken relationships and reconnect with everyone. This is where I think Alex and Carrie come in.

I think that Alex and Carrie are going to be really important in reconnecting everyone and here is why I think that. I think you can draw alot of parallels between Alex and Carrie and I think the show producers have created these parallels because they want us to connect Alex and Carrie.

The first parallell is something I have spoken about before and I think it’s talked about alot in the fandom, but many of the characters in the show have a colour connected to them Alex and Carrie both have the same colour connected to them, pink.

In fact its very rare to see either of these characters not wearing pink, it happens occassionally but not very often. This is interesting considering on the surface these are very different characters.

But the colour pink had a lot of symbolism around it and even more interesting than that, different shades of pink have different meanings. Pink is made up from two colours, Red and White. Red symbolises, passion, energy, power and sometimes agression. White symbolises purtiy, morality and innocence. Obviously these are two contradicting colours but when you put them together the passion of red is softened by the purity of the white creating a calming, romantic and gentle loving colour. The more red in the pink the more energetic the colour.

Alex wears alot of light pink. Light pink is a much softer and calmer colour than the brighter pink that Carrie is often seen in. And that fits their individual personalities, Alex is a much calmer and softer person whereas Carrie is more engergetic and agressive. However pink is also a playful colour and I would say both characters have shown that playful side to them when Carrie performs and when Alex joined in with the dancing is one example. Pink also represents friendship, unconditional love, understanding and compassion. I think you could easily relate all of these things to Alex but you might have a harder time seeing Carrie that way. However I think from the fact that Julie used to be friends with her and that little clap at the end of Stand Tall she definitely has the capacity to be all of those things. I do think that clap at the end was the beginning of her redemption arc but that its going to take some time for her character to grow and I think Alex is going to play a big part in helping her with her journey.

Dancing is another thing that is similar between them. The both seem to really enjoy that aspect of performing. I do think that this love of dance could be what helps them connect in season 2. Alex is always shown to enjoy Dirty Candy’s performance and has joined in with the dancing both times. But they also seem to be wound tightly and often seen as tense or stressed. I do think that they both use dance as an outlet, its their way to let loose and just be themselves without any cares. I do think this could be something they’ll bond over.

So why is it important that Alex and Carrie make this connection? Well I personally think that out of the three boys Alex is the one that is going to be most willing to forgive Bobby. When they found out that Bobby had stolen their songs both Reggie and Luke had very specific reasons for being angry about it. Luke was angry because if he had been given credit then his parents would have known his dreams were worth chasing. Reggie was angry because if Bobby had given them credit then some of the money would have gone to their families and maybe his family wouldn’t have had their house turned into a bike shed. But Alex never gives a specific reason for being angry therefore I think he’ll be the one most likely to be willing to sit down and chat with Bobby and listen to his side of the story. I think it’ll be through Carrie that Bobby and Alex will reconnect. I spoke in another post (here if you like dot read it) about how alot of the characters have a necklace that they always wear and the symbolism behind those necklaces. Alex always wears a gold chain which as I said in that other post, chains have been a symbol of everlasting love and life since ancient times, its the circle that never ends. Gold is also a symbol of purity, illumination, love, compassion, courage, passion, magic, and wisdom. Again all of these things are very similar to what the colour pink represents. What’s interesting to me is that even though Carrie doesn’t have a necklace that she never ever takes off she does have one that she wears more often than any others and like Alex this is a gold chain or rather two gold chains.

Also if you look at the picture on the right where she has pink hair you can see she is wearing another necklace on top of the two gold chains. Now I’m not an expert on designer jewellery but I know there is a brand that is like known for its panther/ leopard necklaces called cartier. I’m pretty sure that’s what the other necklace is. I do think this is obviously suppose to show Carrie’s wealth, gold is also a symbol of wealth and glamour which is probably why alot of Carrie’s jewellery is gold. But it is interesting that it is a cat necklace, again in that other post I talked about cat imagery in the show and how Flynn is often seen in animal prints and has cat imagery associated with her. Cat’s in alot of cultures are guardians to the underworld and spirits. This necklace isn’t the only instance that we see Carrie with cat imagery in Edge of Great she is wearing a leopard print pale pink outfit.

Although there is nowhere near as much of this cat/ leopard imagery with Carrie as there is Flynn I do still think this represents that Carrie will also like Flynn will be on team phantoms at some point and like Flynn will act in a helper/ protector capacity.

Staying on the subject of cats though there is something else I want to talk about. Like I said I think mending their relationship with Bobby is going to be a big part of completing the phantoms unfinished business. Well I didn’t notice this until @this-is-a-name-dont-worry pointed it out to me but like the rest of the boys Bobby also has a necklace that he wears all the time and whch he was wearing in 1995 and 2020.

I spent ages trying to figure out what the hell his necklace was because in most shots it just looks like a hunk of silver metal. But I finally figured it out and I’m 99% sure that its a lion.

Sorry about the quality of the picture it’s as clear as I could get it. I’ve tried to make the features a little bit clearer by outlining them. The red dots are the eyes, the orange circle is where the nose and open mouth is and then the mane is outlined in brown. Also like Carrie and Flynn he has been seen wearing leopard print. This makes Bobby the third person to be associated with cats of some kind and what is also interesting is that all three characters are lifers. But the Lion holds a even more special symbolism. Most of the characters can be divided into being more connected to Julie/ lifers or to the Phantoms/ afterlife. For example Willie and Caleb are very much connected to the Phantoms and the afterlife. But Flynn and Carrie are much more connected to Julie and life. However you could argue that Bobby is that one character that is very much in both worlds. He is very connected and was a big part of the phantoms lives but he was also quite a big part of Julie’s life and is very much connected to her and the living through Carrie. The interesting thing is that Lions are neither nocturnal (active at night) or diurnal (active during the day) but are sort of inbetween. Night time in many cultures is symbolic of magic and the afterlife, the haunting hour as Caleb put it. Daytime is very much the time of the living so its interesting to me that Bobby has a necklace that is the image of a animal that is part of both worlds just as he is. Also as a slight sidenote I do have a new maybe not theory but headcanon, all four boys from sunset curve each have a necklace that is unique to them and that they never take off, I like to think that they all brought the necklaces together, maybe at a stall or something and that they are a symbol of their friendship kinda like friendship bracelets but as necklaces. Still its really interesting to me that Bobby never took that necklace off. Anyway back on track I think the fact that all three of these characters have associasions with cats makes me think that each of them will be instrumental in helping the phantoms complete their unfinished business, especially as cats are often not just depicted as protectors for spirits in the afterlife but as guides. I think each of them is kind of like a roadmarker on the journey to the phantoms completing their unfinished business.

Ok so going back to Alex and Carrie and why I think Alex will be an important part of Carrie’s character development and redemption arc. In episode 6 there is that truly iconic scene where Dirty Candy is performing and Alex ends up joining them on stage. During the dance Alex passes through Carrie twice. When Ray passed through Reggie, Reggie then formed an attatchment to Ray. The same thing happened between Julie and Luke they formed a deep connection. Obviously I do think that there were other factors than just they passed though them but I do think its significant and its for that reason that I think that Alex and Carrie will form a bond. Also from Reggie’s comment about being able to tell that Ray has a good heart and the looks on Julie and Lukes faces it seems like they can sense the other persons I don’t know personality or maybe even their soul, maybe when passing through for a moment your souls connect who knows. I think Carrie has alot of issues, clearly, but I think underneath all that she is actually more like Alex than we know, a gentle, sweet girl. I think this is something that Alex sensed and that he is going to help her get back to who she used to be and help her reconnect with Julie. I do think Carrie and Julie’s story is the same as Bobby and Luke’s/the Phantoms. I think like Bobby, Carrie has a deep rooted jealousy of Julie. I think that Carrie has a love for music and wants to be successful in the industry and she probably feels a bit like she’s in her father’s shadow and that there’s alot of pressure on her to succeed because of how successful her father is. Although she is good I do think she probably feels like she is constantly outshone by Julie and that Julie’s talent comes really easily to her. Like her father I think she was given an opportunity, I spose you could call it, by death more specifically Julie’s mum’s death. I think with Julie being unable to sing or play music Carrie was suddenly getting alot more attention but like Bobby I think she has alot of conflicted feelings about it because although she is now getting more success she is grieving for someone who has passed. It must be a very conflicting feeling and I think that is why she is so moved in Stand Tall because I do think she had a bond with Rose and just didn’t know how to deal with her dying. Also as another little detail during that scene Carrie isn’t in pink but is wearing a dress that is covered in hearts.

I think this is suppose to symbolise how her heart is opening up. But the really interesting thing is that the hearts are coloured pink, red and blue which are the colours of the boys maybe this is an indication that the boys will be helping open her heart or that she will help open theirs to forgiveness for bobby.

Another sign that Carrie might be getting a redemption arc is that in episode 6 again during that scene where she performs all eyes on me she is wearing a pendant of Saturn.

Saturn is symbolic of transition and transformation. I think the message here is clear that Carrie is going to go through a change. As I said I think Alex will play a big part in that. Part of the reason why I think that is because I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Carrie is wearing the Saturn pendant at the same time that Alex joins in with the dance and passes through Carrie. Also I think its significant that the song that Alex joins in with is All Eyes On Me. Again in that other post I talked about how I actually thought the song was telling the story of what happened between Bobby and the boys. Like I said Carrie and Julie’s situation I think is the same. I think just as Alex was interfering and making the dance better (because you know he made it better as fantastic as it already was) he is going to be ‘interfering’ and making Carrie and Julie’s relationship better and then as a result of that Carrie is going to help heal things with her father.

Ok this one even I will admit is a bit of a stretch but it popped into my head so I figured I’d add in. But in episode 9 when Caleb gives the Phantoms new threads each of them have, well I’m not sure exactly what they are but lets go with brooch. I don’t know if there is any significance to Luke’s and Reggie’s because I haven’t been able to get a clear enough image of them yet but this one is Alex’s.

Alex has a cross and a chain that curves like a crescent. The symbol for saturn is this.

Obviously its not the identical but I can’t help but think they look similar. The other interesting thing is that the Saturn symbol is made up of two components a cross and a scythe. Saturn is symbolic not just of change and transformation but with death, or more specifically death’s scythe. I don’t know I just thought it was interesting and if his brooch is suppose to represent the symbol for Saturn then that means that both Alex and Carrie have worn jewellery associated with Saturn. I do think that both of them will grow and change. I also think it would be really interesting to see these two getting to know each other and them bonding. I’d love to see a dance scene with them both. You know one where Carrie knows he’s there and can interact with him.

So yeah that was my incoherrent ramblings about Alex and Carrie with a side of Bobby. Now all I need is for Netlfix to renew the show for a 2nd season already.

Idea 2 - Research & Concepts -3rd January 2021

For my second E4 sting idea, and most likely my third as well, I have decided to tone back my research just a little, since they both largely draw from personal inference, or just general knowledge. I will still conduct thorough research into the things I feel require it, however for these ideas, I do think the merit more comes from the presentation of the art and concepts I create.

Below are the different corners and things I drew inspiration from for my paintball idea, that all led me to the concept art seen at the end of the blog:

Previous Stings

I won’t be posting much here about this since I have already produced a large segment on E4 stings earlier in the blog, but its safe to say I have been inspired by the grungy, snappy ideas people have come up with in the past, and largely, the colours they have opted to use, which almost never go below vibrant.

Paintballing

Paintballing is a really fun thing to do, personally I would consider it a sport, and one of the best at that, and it seems pop culture recognises that too. There are a lot of pieces of media that tackle paintballing, but one of my personal favourites is Splatoon, the game franchise created by Nintendo. This game, on top of being massively addictive, is gorgeous to look at, and plays around with some really interesting concepts, that make painting even more fun, especially to an artist. Additionally, the colours are just stunning, something that has certainly probed me on to make colour a prime feature.

Painting

Perhaps I should have prefaced the entire blog entry with a simple fact - I love painting. I may not do it as much as I used to, but painting has been my entire life for a long long time, and it’s such an outlet for me in many ways. It’s always held such a high regard in my personal life and educational history, that I feel it important to include as a main theme in my work from time to time, and if not now, then definitely in the future. Painting itself is such a broad hobby, that it can be stretched into nearly anything, a fitting feature for an E4 Sting. The picture below is one of my own paintings.

Concept Art

2A - This concept sheet displays the only developed character of the entire sting idea, a young boy, who likes to consider himself a pro at paintballing. I wanted to emphasize the sharp lines here, as well as the unsaturatedness of his outfit, to contrast with the bright paint colours that he would be splatted with. Also, his sleek and simple design makes moving and posing him a lot easier, especially with the context of a 30 second animation. His paintball weapon there was actually modelled after a hair dryer, because I just thought the shape was interesting, and with the hair and posing of the main image, he is meant to look suave, and almost dreamy, think teenage heartthrob. This makes it all the more amusing when he is splatted with paint.

2B - This concept sheet is just about colour and the potential shapes and styles in which the paint could fall, since there really wasn’t much else at a base level to be concepting. Because I hold colour in such a high regard with this particular sting idea, it deserved its own page of concepts. The bright colours would definitely be a mainstay, they look just too attractive to drop, and as for colour pallettes, the opportunities are nearly limitless, so this would be a fun task. Other than that, there really isn’t much else to say.

Overall, I do indeed like this idea, and I think it’s a strong potential sting pitch, I’m just not sure if its the one for me at the moment. Personally, I am still attatched to idea 1, since it also contains some heartfelt moments which I feel would be refreshing in an E4 sting. I won’t discredit this idea though, and I think it’s very strong.

Camera Shy. [ John Deacon Oneshot ].

Look at me mom, no self control!!!

Title: Camera Shy. Pairing: John Deacon x Reader. Words: 1,727. Rating: K. [ Complete and utter flUFF ]. Summary: John loves to take pictures of you, but you very seldom take any of him. You finally mention it and he gives in, letting you take a shot of him.

It’s a warm 1971 day, a breeze rolling in and shuddering through your body and reminding you that yes, it is the summer time but there’s always the possibility of a cold rain shower later in the afternoon as you perch yourself on the grass, looking up at John who bent down on one knee in front of you, eager now more than you had seen him in a while. Well, this was the first time you actually had seen him in a while, after all, Queen was picking up, he was spending more time with the guys, touring, recording, drawing up bigger and better plans for the bands future, than he was with you. Which, ultimately you understood. It just made moments like this--- the odd off days when he wasn’t needed in the studio or needed by the rest of Queen for anything, that you cherished more than before because it allowed the two of you to be a conventional couple, next to each other, rather than aimlessly placed on two different continents while he played to thousands of people and you were left to go about your daily life as if he were still there, crinkly eyed smile and all to greet you when you got home. Gazing up at him through the light of the sun, you raised a hand to cover your eyes and give you some shade as John said, “The sun is hitting you just right.” But, his words didn’t seem to matter. You were so preoccupied swooning at the man you had so luckily nabbed and were able to call your own. So beautiful, you think to yourself as his thick, brown hair softly cascaded down to his shoulders, some of it shrouding your view of his face as he was leaning so intently into the eyepiece of the camera, shoulders hunching in on themselves as he rests his elbow onto his knee, getting into a proper position to take a stunning photo of you lounging.

“I need this picture, (Name).” John has got his eye to the eyepiece of his camera, one eye closed, nose crinkled cutely and a charming half-grin spread across his cheeks as he tells you to flash a smile. “Just one more,” He urges you forward, “I promise, this is the last one for today and then I will,” You watched the bassist adjust a knob on the camera, almost as if it were second nature to John. But, you knew better--- it was his bass that was second nature, photography, or in his mind just taking pictures of you in the most mundane of moments, came third in nature. “Then I will put the camera down and look at you with my own eyes instead. Just smile for me.” You do smile for him– it’s faux, unnatural and you were posing for it, but John still thinks you’re one of the most beautiful things he’s ever laid sights on as the camera is lightly rested on the ground beside him, the brunette leaning in and pressing his lips against your cheek sweetly. “Thank you. Now I’ve got a picture of you really cheesing it up for the camera.”

“It was my pleasure to cheese it for you, Deaks.” You grin and turn your head to capture his lips in a kiss as he sits down beside you, grunting as he lands on the hard ground before falling onto his forearms and tilting his head back. There’s a moment or two of silence between John and yourself before you take a leap of faith and ask him softly while your fingertips lightly rest on his chest, spidering their way along the buttons on his shirt, “Why do you never let me take any pictures of you, Deaky?”

“I’m camera shy.” You tilted your head at that reply and pucker your lips at the speed of which he gave it to you. Understandable. Even with Queen he liked to stay out of the center of attention and off to the side like some sort of blur. But, even though he strove to do that and stay out of the limelight, you only had eyes for him and made it abundantly clear as you trickled your touch up, caressing his neck tenderly before allowing your fingers to expand along his cheek and jawline, holding his face.

“One picture, for me?”

You almost heard him groan next to you, but it came out more as a sigh than anything. Turning his head to the side, he looked down at his camera and contemplated his options. His very, very limited options. John didn’t like to say no to you and though you wouldn’t press if he did say no at this particular moment, he would feel guilty that he denied you such a simple pleasure as taking his photo. You, still holding onto the side of his face lightly coaxed him into look back at you, John’s usually pouty lips parting as he gazed into your eyes for a split second before nodding carelessly, his wall of brown hair following that movement. He’s not going to know how it turns out until he gets it developed, so maybe if he doesn’t look that great, he can toss it out before bringing the rest of the pictures to you so the two of you can look together with the excuse of ‘it was very blurry, I’m sure you didn’t want that’. That seemed like a plan, he figured and held out his camera for you to take. “One picture, nothing more, (Name). I will smash the film if there’s more than one picture of me on there.”

The smile that you give him is extraordinary, it’s gentle and it’s… Well… It’s perfect…. Just like you, he thinks to himself and lays back on his forearms as you play around with the camera a bit, figuring out the calibrations needed as you lightly place yourself onto his lap. Caution was so swept away when you straddle your boyfriend, not caring that you were in a public park as you were desperate to get the perfect picture of John. He gave you one chance and you weren’t going to waist it. A cheeky grin is rolling onto your cheeks as he reaches down and grabs your hips to keep you steady while you look into the eye piece. “Really, in my lap? In public, love? Never thought you to be into that sort of---”

Heat rushed across your cheeks as you lightly pat his chest, falsely offended that he was even be thinking that. But, it was hard not to. Even for you, the dirty image did run across your mind vividly as your legs readjusted themselves so you were more comfortably seated on him. John remained on his forearms, laying back but not completely. Almost as if he were asking for you to come straddle him, asking you to sit on his lap, lean in and give him one of those filthy kisses where you dived right into his mouth with your tongue. That would make him want to take a picture, he was sure. “A photographer’s got to do what a photographer’s got to do, right?” John couldn’t argue with that logic. “To get the perfect pose from the perfect muse.”

“Ah, you’re pushing it. You’re meant to flatter me as a model, not flirt with me.” “Tell me the difference.”

“Oh,” He squeaked in a high pitched tone of voice, very obviously mocking you. Imitations were not his thing, you quickly realized as he continued, “Deaky, you’re so perfect, so pretty, wow, I think I’ll just lean down and kiss you.” Covering your mouth with one hand, you leaned the camera against your chest and laughed. “Was that supposed to be me?”

“Flirting, yes.” He laughed along side with you, throwing his head back while doing so. You were tempted in that moment to take a picture then, but his face wouldn’t be in focus enough for you to enjoy the picture once it was developed. You wanted a picture of him, face forward with that classic Deaky smile, tooth gap on display, tongue pressed against the back of his teeth, eyes crinkling, eyebrows raised, mouth almost sore from smiling. That was your favorite expression of his, you realized when you were falling in love. The way he smiled--- the way it formed against his rather gentle features. While some people smiled with just their mouths, John smiled with his entire face and he beamed like a ray of sunlight.

“I’m a smooth talker.” You wiggled your eyebrows cutely and raised the camera once again to get ready to snap a photo at any given moment. “I’m glad I’ve got that on my side because I am shitty as a photographer.”

“I can give you lessons.”

“Free?”

“Hm…” John balled his face up and shook his head playfully, “I’ll charge you, one kiss per shot. Sound fair?” He smiled then, but not the sort of smile you were expecting. This was the relaxed smile that he gave you when the two of you were in bed together in the wee hours of the morning, just basking in the glow of being next to one another. The sort of smile he’d give you after having sex, lazy and uninterrupted of any emotion other than complete and utter love. You were breathless, your pointer finger falling and snapping a picture right then and there. That’s what you wanted. You wanted no poses, no unnecessarily prompted smiles by saying ‘smile for me’. You wanted a natural picture of John, something you could look at while he was on tour and remember when you took it, how you felt when you were taking it and how you wanted to take another one. And another, just for safekeeping.

“I’d charge more than that,” Putting the camera down lightly besides the two of you, you finally closed in on John’s face and pressed your lips against his. Nothing overtly sensual or sexual, just a mild, run-of-the-mill sort of kiss that still managed to get both of your hearts racing. “Two,” You peppered your lips onto his, barely but still managed to catch the breathless way he chased after your lips, “three kisses per shot sounds more adequate for you sharing your skills with me…”

Alright fandom, buckle the hell up because @tyrsenian @therumour and @alonereed and I just uncovered a conspiracy that will blow your mind. (Okay, not really, but we feel like secret agents, or I do at least, so humor us.) Again, no page breaks on mobile. Sorry.

We all know the pilot of Whiskey Cavalier is the pilot. It's a straight set up, building the charactes and at the very end building the team. But that's where this wild ride begins. At the very end of the episode, they say that they're going to London to uncover a sleeper cell.

That's a bit weird, given that in "When in Rome" while they're discussing exactly why it is that their team is in danger of being disbanded, Susan says that their first mission was a disaster, a comment upon which Frankie elaborates with details about the mission from "The Czech List." (Notice how I'm using episode titles here instead of short handing with the numbers? Good. Hold that thought.) This can pretty easily be explained away by the beginning of "When in Rome" itself; their training excercises are in London, facing off against a faux terrorist cell. We can use this to understand that the "mission" they're headed on at the end of the pilot is actually a training mission, only this first time they don't know it's a training. We know from "When in Rome" that they've run it at the very least more than once, but it seems by the faux-prime minister's phrasing that they've done it a few times now, so this pretty neatly explains away that discrepancy.

However.

There are some major red flags in "The Czech List" the become glaringly obvious when you stare right at them. First is the fact that in the scene where Hannah and Karen run from the van, Standish can be seen next to Susan in the background as Will and Frankie give chase, and Standish very clearly has a gun. That might not raise any concerns until "When in Rome," when we find out that Standish has not until this point been allowed a weapon. That seems to be just a discrepancy in continuity, but things get weirder.

As @auraispurple pointed out to @alonereed, Will says he stole the lemon verbena soap from the hotel in Rome, which they don't stay in until "When in Rome." This could potentially be explained by saying that they had a long layover or something, but it definitely points at a weird directionality here. @alonereed is right to point out that there's a strange shift between "The Czech List" to "When in Rome"... this shift creates a slight hitch in the character dynamic between the episodes that seems almost just like a show finding its feet at first glance, except...

Something that always sat oddly with me and I think a lot of others is how we get the whole, "Don't make this a big final moment thing, Will, don't" line from Frankie in "The Czech List" and it seems almost too much to soon from Frankie "I don't do emotional attatchments" Trowbridge. But here's the kicker.

This show is overt on some levels and subtle on others. We see Frankie in the pilot with Will as her mark in the bar in Moscow, saying that she (as her cover) is in Moscow for a conference on art history, and we find out in "Mrs. and Mr. Trowbridge" that Will studied art history in college (but majored in English, if David Hemingson's twitter is to be believed), so she's not only done her homework (she even says she read his file, which is thorough enough that she knows he paid off Gigi's student loans) but the writers have done their homework on ironing out their continuity as well. You might be asking what this has to do with the weird tonal hiccups between "The Czech List" and "When in Rome." Well, that's what we're about to see.

In "The Czech List" we see not only the goof with Standish, but also a really pointed joke Will makes just after Stavros is killed, asking whether or not Frankie knows the assassin who had just shot him. Frankie's snarky response is, "I don't know every assassin," a line which seems oddly defensive in response to an oddly pointed question. This might seem like foreshadowing to the reveal of her background in "When in Rome," but if we consider the fact that Will, when he feels betrayed in "Mr. and Mrs. Trowbridge" turns into a Grade A petty bitch (and we all love him the more for it, don't even deny it) exemplified by not only by the situations in which he "accidentally" hits Vasily with the shotgun and then uses the commotion at the wedding as an opportunity to punch him in the face, but also how he lashes out at Frankie and Susan, we can see that his questioning Frankie about the assassin isn't weirdly pointed, it's a deliberate dig at her. This also explains why she's so defensive in her response; this isn't a new conversation for them, but rather a still sensitive topic from it being revealed by necessity in "When in Rome."

The episodes are out of order.

This explains the dissent about methodology that seems to be building quickly to a boiling point in "When in Rome" but worked out with some trust in "The Czech List." We see Will going so far as to take the magazine out of Frankie's pistol, not exactly a move someone does to their partner, and yet there's no real reason for Will to have lost the trust built between them in "The Czech List," if that was actually first, not even the fact that Frankie has had to reveal her rather questionable pre-CIA activities. In "The Czech List" we hear Will say that they have to get Stavros, and specifies, "Alive, Frankie." We know from the pilot that Frankie is willing to do anything for the mission, but that line seems almost too harsh given only that information, until you realize that this is Will "petty bitch" Chase still hurting from thinking he was starting to get to know Frankie and getting that bomb dropped on him in Rome instead. He does pretty clearly start trusting her in "The Czech List," showing it when he listens to her direction on how to talk to Karen. There's a lot of tension in the team in "The Czech List," don't get me wrong, and that can pretty easily be read as building to the blow out in "When in Rome." But on the other hand, it seems easier to see the team's growing pains when we look at "When in Rome" first. A great place to look at this is, as aforementioned, with Frankie's admission of jealousy in the bank vault.

After her fight with Will and their reconciliation under the threat of impending death my chemical bomb, the admission starts making a little more sense. It starts making a LOT more sense if we consider the scene with Isabella, where Frankie admits to having "a soft spot." She's trying to connect with Will, just a little, adding in a backhanded, snarky comment ("you've got hundreds of them") to maintain his distance at arm's legth, but the attempt is there. Her admission in the bank vault is a bigger gesture, again under the threat of death. When it follows the smaller attempt at genuine connection, it makes more sense than it does as a sudden announcement in the episode immediately following the pilot. We also see Will reference having saved her life in France repeatedly in "When in Rome," but not in "The Czech List," as though he's finally dropped it (at least for now).

Furthermore, this order makes the whiplash moving into "Mrs. and Mr. Trowbridge" a little less. We see in "The Czech List" when taken as the third episode ("When in Rome" being the second) how Frankie and Will are beginning to learn how to connect and work together, but not with enough progress to not be fighting over having to pretend to be married to each other. It also shows how Will trusting Frankie in the field is a step forward until their blow out over their cover as spouses takes them a full step back again to where they were in "When in Rome."

After this piece by piece reconstruction took place, @therumour confirmed the episodes are numbered differently than the aired order on their tv, a fact which @whiskeycav then confirmed for us for certain.

However.

Even when we set the episodes in order of the pilot, "When in Rome," "The Czech List," and "Mrs. and Mr. Trowbridge," there's still a bit of a disconnect between Frankie and Will's budding partnership and the Grade A USDA Certified UST™️ in "Mrs. and Mr. Trowbridge." Even as early as what seems to me to have become known in much of the fandom as The Infamously Unnecessary But Excellent Laser Dancing Scene™️, we see a lot of UST specifically with Frankie's attention on Will, something which doesn't quite follow from "The Czech List." There's obviously reshoots/added scenes to piece the episodes in the aired order (like Susan saying their "first mission" in reference to "The Czech List, which is actually episode three), but let's not underestimate our writers here. This is character-driven fiction, where our plots are vital but secondary to the character development, which drives the plot and operates within its structure. They're sure as all hell not ingoring the UST and developing relationship between Will and Frankie-- that's what this whole show is about. We should be seeing some kind of transition there, between "The Czech List" and "Mrs. and Mr. Trowbridge", and it's missing.

There's an episode missing. An episode that hasn't aired yet.

This is confirmed by the fact that "Mrs. and Mr. Trowbridge" is, in fact, episode five. Episode four in the actual run of episodes hasn't aired yet.

Which begs the question: what the hell happens between Will and Frankie in that episode?

TL;DR

1) The episodes are airing out of order, but ironed out with connectivity pieces inserted to make this order make sense.

2) Will Chase is a petty bitch and if you don't love him you're wrong.

3) The writing in this show is so excellent that you can pick out the details and form this kind of analysis, like we did in the group chat, piecing together evidence to form a correct(!) conclusion because they're giving us high enough quality content to work with.

4) The episodes make more sense in the original order, so what exactly is happening here is beyond any of us.

5) What the FUCK happens in episode 4 in the original sequence???????????

Finished Reading: American Psycho

I really enjoyed this book. Haven’t read a book that gave me such intrigue and curiosity to keep reading like this book for a while. I’m surprised and slightly disappointed it is only 3.8/5 stars on Goodreads but then, I suppose the level of graphic violence must have put off a lot of readers. For me, being the slightly morbid reader I am, I was impressed by the graphic writing. The writing style was clear and crisp, you could easily grasp the distinct voice of Patrick Bateman when he begins to narrate the story. Interestingly, the story does not start with Patrick narrating. Instead, it begins in third person describing a conversation between Tim Price and his unnamed companion (which a few pages later on turns out to be Patrick). It is interesting we don’t instantly get inside Patrick’s head, it is only a few pages in the story suddenly turns into the first person voice of Patrick Bateman. I think of the first pages demonstrating Patrick’s detachment from where he is in the moment of the scene, which is a recurring theme throughout the book. For me, I almost felt tricked by Patrick and by the author; I fall into the trap of trying to like Patrick. It’s easy to be fascinated by psychopaths, and with that fascination comes a sprout of attatchment to this monstrous character. Scenes where I am especially having feelings of amicability for Patrick are ones where he appears to show disgust or boredom for the rich, boring individuals he surrounds himself with. Blandness is at the core of their culture, and the fact that Patrick deviates from this blandness into psychopathy makes me more accustomed to liking him. This is of course before I have encountered any of the killing/sex scenes.

My opinion of Patrick drastically changes when the author vividly describes Patrick’s murders. He commits acts so sickly and horrifying it blows my mind how the author founds the inspiration to physically write these descriptions. As horrific as they are, I also must commend the author; enabling a reader to physically cringe over a passage of words is an achievement. It is a skill, a craft to write so vividly. The story has no clear trajectory, instead of chapter numbers each chapter name describes the scene which Patrick finds himself in. These scenes can be months,days even hours apart. I liked this style, for one thing it allowed me to tell what each chapter would be about from the title.However, there is no clear “plotline”, the book is merely describing points in time of Patrick’s life in his perspective. It’s only during the killing scenes that I realise how warped Patrick’s mind really is. When he kills, he does not hold back at all. Despite having rigorous exercise and facial hygeine routines, when it comes to willpower over committing murder and other attrocities, Patrick really does struggle to control his willpower. Willpower or not, Patrick takes pleasure out of these acts, (as much as experiencing pleasure is possible for a psychopath like himself), it continues to hold his interest unlike the majority of things in his life (people, materialism).

Something mildly frustrating about American Psycho is the lack of depth the story goes into Patrick’s backstory. We find out very little about his backstory and past, which I imagine the author made sure of intentionally to keep Patrick more ambiguous and mysterious. Thus it is hard to deduce the extent to which we can blame his psychopathy on his genes or family or whether it is in fact due to the rich and bland culture he grew up in. It is likely to be a mixture of both, the details that we do grasp of his past are all connotated with evil and immorality. He rapes his “maid” at only 14 years old, a detail only briefly mentioned in the book, but totally jarred me. If at 14 he is capable of sexual assault, it is almost no wonder he becomes the person he does by the time he is 27. We also are shown a scene between Patrick and his younger brother Sean. It is made obvious that Sean is more successful than Patrick, such as his abillity to easily get seats at the restraunt “Dorsia”. Dorsia is Patrick’s enemy, he can never get seats at this restraunt no matter how hard he tries yet his brother secures them easily. Whilst this seems trivial, it highlights 2 important facts. Patrick feels insecure compared with his brother. And his brother is “higher up” than Patrick. I wondered when reading the scene between Patrick and his brother, how similar Patrick’s brother might be to Patrick, could he too have psychopathic traits? It is not made obvious, but I would presume that Sean could easily be a psychopath too but unlike Patrick does not need to murder. After all, not all psychopaths are murderers. As well as his brother, we are also shown a scene between Patrick and his Mother. Patrick visits his Mother in hospital, though mostly shows detatchment throughout the visit and is described looking at his hair through most of the visit; he is naturally more concerned with his appearance than with his Mother. The conversation between Patrick and his Mother shows very little other than the fact they have a poor relationship. I would imagine that Patrick and his relationship with his father would be most interesting of all his family relationships. Sadly, we find out the least about his father. Patrick describes his father’s eyes as cold and lacking emotion, traits the reader easily would match with Patrick’s own personality. I think it would be a fair statement to say that potentially, the psychopathy runs in the Bateman family. Another interesting detail is that Patrick does not need to work, one of his ex-girlfriend’s Bethany mentions, the Bateman family business must be so rich that the fact Bateman is working seems odd to Bethany. Patrick argues that he works anyway to keep up appearances.

Appearances are a huge theme in the book. It is because of Patrick’s appearance, his status as well as his good looks which make him seem like the most unlikely to commit murder. Patrick’s “appearance” essentially shields him from having to face the justice system/police like an ordinary middle classed person would. He is protected by his lawyers as well as his appearances. In one especially iconic scene, Patrick claims he murdered “Paul” but this particular man cannot believe him simply because he is sure he has seen Paul in London. He hasn’t of course, the problem with Patrick’s wall street life is that everyone looks the same; people are constantly mistaken for others; this is pure normalcy in their circle. People who have only watched the movie argue that this scene is proof that all the murders were in Patrick’s head. Perhaps one could make that argument for the film, but I would passionately disagree that is the case for the book as well. One of my favourite quotes from the book and film, which really epitomises the theme of appearances is when patrick in his head says “The inside...doesn’t matter”. Because for Patrick all his life, this has been the case. It doesn’t matter that on the inside he is a monster. Even the fact that he commits these monstrous acts doesn’t matter because they could never be associated with him. He is utterly shielded by his appearances, and perhaps part of him wants to be caught; he after all knows how easily he is protected by his status.

As evil as Patrick is, it is clear that the people around him aren’t much better. I would argue Patrick is the physical manifestation of an accumulation of the sins, evils and immoralities of the wallstreet, the rich and the bland. Another scene that especially sticks out to me is one between a taxi driver and Patrick. The driver has recognised Patrick from a “wanted poster” with his face on it; he realises Patrick is the one who murdered “Sully”, a likely close friend of the driver’s. The obvious outcome was that the driver would ring the police; he had a gun whilst Patrick only had a knife, he was the one in control of the situation. But instead, the driver demands Patrick hand over his watch and credit card. Because there was no “reward prize/money” for finding Patrick, the driver had sought out his own reward. This scene for me, suggests that Patrick might never get caught. Money plays a far bigger role than justice. Having said that, as the story progresses Patrick becomes increasingly sloppy in his killings, his perfect “mask” constantly slipping at the wrong moments so I suppose I could counter that if Patrick continued in this downward trajectory he would get caught.

I did not expect to find myself writing what feels like so much about this book. I really enjoy it a lot. The writing style, the characters, the themes. All gold. I’d easily give this book 5 stars out of 5.

I’m of the opinion that this is all inevetable... the christians holy text “the new testement” quite unironically has a set of jewish religious leaders/law-makers (the Pharasees) who “plan to destroy jesus” so you can make the arguement that christians accusing jews of conspiracy is quite literally part of their orgin story.

Second, i think bank conspiracies are mostly sillyness even though the swiss look shifty... but isreal exists and likes to buy defense contractors... stuxnet is an american isreali vandalism operation, isreal is one of the few nations still on the planet that seems to have defined itself as explicitly nonsecular, moreover this nonsecular state in a secular world appears to be capable and condoned when it deploys snipers against civilians, or builds a wall to evict the native palistinians. To top all of this off, whenever people talk about circumcision I am reminded that I am a goyim who apparently was circumcized... think about that. I understand that circumcision is not strictly jewish, but what religion did my irreligious USA goy family get this from huh? If I was not taught about haunukah at age 5, the holocaust at age 6, and isreal at age 8, if i didn’t learn the yiddish words my mom used all the time... I feel i could be forgiven for being suprised how much influance this comparitively small religion seems to have on my tiny insignifigant life. like why isn’t it the more worldwide popular seikism...?

Third, telling a group of people not to speak about something... you sound like a USA southern plantation owner and I feel like thats a bad look considering the context of what you are saying. The history you are referancing speaks for itself, and you made a good meme, attatching exclusionary racist (or rather religious) catigorization does absolutely nothing to help your point and makes you look irrational.

Les Mis Brasil - my review (LONG POST - MIGHT AS WELL BE THE BRICK)

So, about a month ago I went to São Paulo to watch the brazilian Les Mis. It’s the second time in sixteen years that the show is performed here and I was more than excited to watch it, since Les Mis was my first musical, and my favourite one as well. I wanted to make this post a while ago, but I got lazy, so why the hell not do it now.

As soon as I walked into the theatre I felt my knees getting weak and my heart beating faster. I swear I was about to cry even before it started. This was the third Broadway musical I ever watched live, and my expectations were really high. I wasn’t dissapointed - though I must admit that it was not perfect.

First of all, the song’s adaptation to portuguese was incredible. I was afraid they were going to screw up with the translations (like they did with Rocky Horror) but I was pleasently surprised to discover that the translations were actually pretty damn good. Some of them were more literal, and sticked to the original english lyrics (Look Down, for example, was very literal), and while others did change a bit from the original, their emotion and meaning was still the same (On My Own was one of those that had some parts distant from the original, but with the same intense feeling and meaning). Two songs I did not enjoy were Stars and Bring Him Home. Both of them were quite astray from the original, and in those cases, it did bother me a bit, because they became vague and not as impressive (those are probably two of the most meaningful songs of the musical, and loosing that did cause some damage - I’ll get to that in a minute). Specifically for Bring Him Home, I simply couldn’t understand what the actor was singing - and he was the brazilian actor, Leo Wagner and not Daniel Diges, the spanish actor who also plays Valjean here.

One of the things that this version brought to us and I don’t think was very clear on other editions of Les Mis was the parallels between Fantine (Kacau Gomes, who I believe was the best choice for the role. Her voice is soothing, pleasent, very maternal sounding) and Éponine (Laura Lobos, who played little Cosette at the first edition of the musical here). Both of them suffer from a frustrated love, in very different manners, didn’t live wealthy lives and also had a great attatchment to Cosette - willingly or not, both their deaths had to do with granting Cosette a happier life. And in the translations of their songs, there were some phrases or sentences that were repeated, and for me, as a fan of both the book and the musica, that was deeply satisfying and an interesting viewpoint. Also, both their ghosts greet Valjean when he dies, and I thought that was really nice - specially since Valjean and Éponine interact a bit. She is the one who delivers him Marius’s note from the barricade, and Valjean tells her to take care of herself.

Many things reminded me of the book. Marius (played by Filipe Bragança, who is only SIXTEEN years old) and Cosette (Clara Verdier) acted like very awkward teenagers when they first meet at the garden, and it was the cutest thing. Their chemistry was amazing, I almost forgot the actors weren’t actually a couple. Clara’s singing performance was a bit disappointing though. Her voice didn’t reach the high notes, that are very characteristic of her character, and that cause her to be off-key some times, which was noticed by many people I talked to.

The Thénardiers were the comic relief, as usual, but they were also the most constant villains - their evil side was very clear to us and it was quite scary how much we could actually sympathize with Mr. Thérnardier, due to the actor’s witty and amusing performance. He kinda reminded me of the hyenas from The Lion King, who were always afraid of Mufasa - whenever Valjean would speak his mind, Mr. Thénardier hided behind his wife. All their scenes were funny but also had a more serious, deep tone beneath it, and that’s the whole point of their characters in the book.

Now, focus on our favourite so called villain: Javert. Javert is the character we love to hate, and for me, he just didn’t do it in this version. He could sing very well, but his perfomance seemed kinda rushed at some moments. It happened very quick and we didn’t have time to appreciate his character’s purpose. “Stars”, which is the song in which we start to care and understand him a bit better, wasn’t very good as I already mentioned, and because of that his character just became sort of one-dimentioned and flat. The Confrontation scene was interesting, as were his other physical confronts with Valjean, because the actors would get very physically agressive and we could feel the tension. At times, they were yelling at each other and the whole theatre went silent. Those were certainly powerful moments I enjoyed. Javert’s suicide was a good scene/song too, because the actor expressed his emotions very passionately and it almost fixed the lack of empathy and interest during the previous scenes.

Let me please, highlight one of my favourite parts of the whole thing: The revolution. That has always been my favourite part of any Les Mis adaptation. And of course, my favourite character is Enjolras, and I was extremely excited to watch what they were going to do with my sweetheart.

Enjolras. Was. Fucking. Awesome.

The actor who plays him, Pedro Caetano, is basically what book-Enjolras should be: passionate, intense, idealistic, charismatic. As soon as he walked on stage, he caught everyone’s attention and he stole my poor heart. His voice fits the character perfectly and, should Hamilton for some miracle reason ever be translated and acted in Brazil, I want Pedro Caetano as Laurens. Not only does he look like Anthony Ramos, but his voice also resembles his. It’s like Aaron Tveit, Anthony Ramos and Daveed Diggs had a beautiful son. That was our Enjolras. He was not only the cold asshole that leads the revolution, he was also a friend to his fellows barricade boys. He seemed to care about every single one of them, and was basically restless during the whole thing. During Bring Him Home, while Valjean is singing, Enjolras could be seen sleeping standing up. He picked Gavroche up during Red and Black, and in his death, his body was put next to Gavroche’s in a wagon.

Also, GRANTAIRE. He is also one of my favourite character, and brazillian Grantaire was simply sad. There’s no other way of describing this portrayal of our drunk revolutionary: Grantaire was sad, depressed even. His skepticism was clear throughout all the songs, he just sat in a corner, drank and made annoyed/sarcastic faces while Enjolras talked (also- Grantaire standed very close to Enjolras during the entire Red and Black, quietly hoping for his attention). Drink With Me is one hell of a song, and Bruno Girst (the actor who was performing Grantaire the day I saw it) did a great job making me cry like a baby. He sang his lines not as someone who was in love and realised he was going to loose his muse in a few hours. No, he was angry at Enjolras, but yet hated himself for not being able to disobey him. I could have sworn they were going to start a fist fight during that song, because as Grantaire is singing “Will the world remember you as you fall/Could it be your death means nothing at all?”, Enjolras approaches him looking pissed and three guys have to hold them so that they don’t punch each other. Right after that, Enjolras goes to talk to Grantaire, calmer and worried, but Grantaire just runs to the corner of the stage and fucking weaps. And you know what’s best? Gavroche is the one holding Grantaire and comforting him.

Also, kudos for Gavroche! That kid was AMAZING! He showed his middle finger to Javert, Grantaire and Enjolras basically act like his dads during the entire play. When Éponine dies, he stands beside her with Grantaire. He takes her little hat and gives it to Marius. The revolutionaries sing “We’ll fight for Éponine”, and that’s when I started crying and I didn’t stop until I was inside the taxi going back to my hotel. Gavroche’s death was pretty impactful, as usual, specially beacause it was Grantaire who cared for him, and Taire just holds Gavroche’s body during half of the battle scene, before laying him down, still weeping, and going back to fight.

As I mentioned, the actor who plays Marius is sixteen. He does look older, and his voice is very deep for a 16 year old, but he was great in the role. It somehow made the whole thing sadder - during Empty Chairs at Empty Tables, we can see how hurt he is, yet he is very young. It’s the very impact we get from his character in the book and it was heartbreaking. Also, in the translation, he sings “My friends, don’t fade away”, as the ghosts of the revolutionaries blow out their candles (I couldn’t stop thinking about Rent during that scene, but that’s off topic).

Well, that’s basically what I have to say in the more technical/deep analysis of the play. Now, some random notes:

- Master of the House was downright dirty. Lots of cursing and bad words that made me laugh like an idiot. Madame Thénardier makes lots of dick jokes and says that Mr Thénardier has a “butthole brain”. Classic Thénardier.

- Éponine kicks Montparnasse in the balls. Twice. Great hommage to book Éponine.

- Cosette and Éponine quickly interact at the garden.

- One Day More gave me the chills. I thought I was going to faint, it was SOOO GOOD.

- A weird/questionable translation during Drink With Me was right at the first verses. The boys sang “Here’s a toast to the lips I’ve kissed/ Here’s a toast to the breasts I’ve touched” and I was almost laughing because that’s SO RANDOM AND YET WEIRDLY ACCURATE. Though I can’t imagine Prouvaire grabbing a girl’s boobs.

- Do You Hear The People Sing was split between all of the ABC’s friends, not focused only on Enjolras, and it was quite awesome.

- “Grantaire, put the bottle down” changed to “Grantaire, STOP DRINKING!”

- Honestly, Pedro Caetano is one of my favourite Enjolras. I reccomend you follow his instagram because he is a beautiful guy and very talanted too.

- Actually, the whole cast is adorable. They hang out together and are basically the Modern AU I dreamed of.

I'm trying to find a health insurance plan for me and my fiance. I currently do not have health insurance but I am on Birth Control for cyst prevention and it runs 90$ a month. My fiance will be expunged from his parent's plan in October when we are married. I am a nanny and he is a personal trainer and tennis instructor, both jobs do not offer plans since he is not considered fulltime. Hi guys. Well, to start out with I have my driver's license address set to my uncle's house in pembroke pines, FL, but I live here in Hialeah Gardens, FL. Why do I have it set to my uncle's house you ask? Well, back when I was 18 (i'm 20 now) my mom persuaded me to set my insurance address (progressive) to my uncle's house so it would be cheaper.
