Okay but about that new Alien Stage thing....I know this is a tired and true cliche that is pretty popular with most modern metafiction but, like....I'm unironically asking. What if we're the aliens observing these characters like they're our pets?

Yeah, Luka was set to be a popular figure from the jump, there was no way his trick with the Sua imitation was more than just a power trip (Or just a genuine mental break on Mizi's part). because either way with the way Mizi was holding herself up during round 5, she stood 0 chance against him.

Luka, just like the others doesn't actually have real control over his position in Alien stage. So in order to set that boundary for himself and others he uses his presence and the stage because, in any other context, he is simply just a tool and a frail (old) man. (And he has in-universe stans how beautiful)

More Luka lore please vivinos....

Kinda glad this got changed, because imagine this cute guy gradually turning into the Ivan we know now and then doing the shit he did in round 6? then doing the dream face reveal showing that he never truly changed, he just had a mask on. that shit would be 10x more devastating (even though the way it is now is just as devastating) Ivan and Luka twins (scary stuff but quite intriguing, even now they're still quite similar in some ways)

Augh...it is true though. Aliens and humans are just far to vast in traits to relate to each other on such a level, this reminds me of Mizi and Guardian Shine. Guardian Shine might've been the only guardian shown in the alien stage cast to actually be kind. She even seemed to be crying when she had to send Mizi away to go to Anakt(?). I find it kinda sweet though, that the ones who do actually care really show it and try even if they can't understand their pets that well.

But I also like the more grim side to it, because when you don't understand something specifically another being in this case you're less likely to have sympathy for it. Humans and Aliens don't have any relatable traits so whatever these aliens do to the humans whether for self-pleasure or such. And lab-mice? that confirms lab-rat theory. Alien stage crew were all just succesful experiments and the bad batch are kept behind for further testing i theorize. but its still pretty vague so we'll see. hopefully things get more grim ((

"Ivan is the perfect man" 😭 I love the details of round 6 clothing so much, even I got that superior or dominating aura from Ivan when I first saw him in round 6 (💀) there wasn't really much to his outfit but the way he carried himself in it kinda just gave off that idea that he's the one in control here. but gradually, we can see that facade fade as he got more into his feelings the more he sang and sunk down to a level where he was most natural. eugh.....

So before I checked out Alien Stage, I asked an irl about it to get a feel for the series. They jokingly described Alien Stage to me as "Hunger Games with doomed yuri and yaoi plus some toxic het on the side", and after catching up with the playlist of hits... yeah, that's pretty accurate. I'm so invested in this now 🤡

I have Ruler of My Heart stuck in my head, specifically this English cover of it! To probably no one's surprise, I'm really gravitating to Luka... WHAT CAN I SAY, I LOVE ANGELIC LOOKING CHARACTERS WITH PRINCELY AND CHARISMATIC PERSONAS THAT ARE ACTUALLY SO MANIPULATIVE AND SCUMMY. AFSLFAYOEFIYFAEEAF; AND HOW CAN I NOT ADORE A GUY THAT PULLS THSI KINDA FACE:

I think part of his charm is that contrast between how he's seen as a "prince" by his fans when he's anything but. The artists outdid themselves with the MV; it perfectly conveys how truly terrible Luka is. I was so uncomfortable watching the video play out. The way he progressively creeps closer and keeps invading Mizi's personal space, taunting her, imitating her dead bestie/crush, putting his hands all over her, AND THAT GROSS WHISTLE HE DOES IN THE BEGINNING???? That made my skin CRAWL. Luka is for real so awful and I love that for him-- MIZI WAS RIGHT TO SWING AT HIM, IT WAS CATHARTIC 💀

I wanna give big props to Mizi's facial expressions too... They're so despair-filled and delicious, even when it's just her widened eyes repeating on the screen. The animation specifically for the line "I don't believe you're a liar" is top tier 👌 It's nothing fancy, but it conveys just how distressed Mizi is and how that's impacting her ability to sing. The way she gulps is so punchy and visceral. THE HATE IN MIZI'S EYES AS SHE'S RESTRAINED FROM COMING AT HIM AGAIN???? Good stuff. The twist at the end where the stage gets smoke bombed (?) and Mizi is rescued by the rebellion was great too. It robs Luka of the satisfaction of seeing his rival gunned down and him being declared as the victor. (P.S. I thought Hyuna was Jamil when I first saw her design; this is proof that Jamil has cool onee-san energy/j) Super looking forward to seeing Luka square off against Till, who is another favorite of mine. The eyebags— Till the End is probably my second favorite song so far; it's so intense in the close-up shots of Till singing his heart out to the audience. (Poor Mob-kun though, bro's getting DESTROYED out here...) I admire Till's fighting spirit but at the same time I feel so bad every time he's subdued 💦 Whereas I want Luka to get knocked down a peg, I want Till to find happiness and safety...

On Round 7 and the utility of sacrifice

⚠️ ROUND 7 SPOILERS ⚠️

I wanted to use this post to respond to some criticism I've seen circulating about Round 7 — it mostly being about Till's death making Ivan's sacrifice useless.

To be fair, this post doesn't aim to dismiss anyone's feelings or criticisms about R7 or Till's (presumed) death, they're all incredibly valid! I even have my own that I will talk about later. This post's only goal is really just to start a conversation about the general narrative of ALNST and how to write a compelling narrative in general. No matter what I'll say, people resonate with stories differently and expect different things from them, and that's okay!

Personally, I truly didn't expect Till to die. Before R7 came out, I even texted a friend saying this:

– If one of them has to die, I think it'll be Luka. Till's protagonist syndrome is too strong and his death would be narratively flat, I believe. – Yeah.

And well, shot missed, unlike the one that shot through Till's neck.

Though, I really do believe Till might not be dead, not only because of the #copium but this isn't really the point of this post — I will assume he is so I can discuss what his death would actually mean to the narrative and how it would impact it.

I understand that no one (including myself) expected R7 to go that way. A lot of it had us realizing we might have gotten some elements of the story wrong — something I didn't take into consideration is that the round was probably rigged to make sure Luka would win, which makes sense because of course that Alien Stage isn't the fairest competition (and if Ivan's pictures on the billboards aren't part of Till's hallucinations, this is plainly evil).

R7 also had us wondering what the goal of the rebels truly is: did they even intend to save Till? If not, why did they save Mizi, what did they see in her? Unlike what I first thought, like many others, it seemingly wasn't a rescue mission.

When I watched R7 for the first time, I audibly gasped the moment I saw the "Luka wins" sign appears and Till being shot down. And I thought "Ah, so that's the kind of story VIVINOS wanted to make." I was already a huge fan of their work before ALNST began, mostly of their horror stuff. When I watched it, I knew I was about to sit in front of absolutely devastating content that would leave me sick. The tragedy was always cruel, often unrewarding, but I would always ask for more. Good thing ALNST now exists, uh!

I mention this to state I went into ALNST expecting roughly the same thing and it's essentially what I got. I didn't expect Till to die but his death, in a way, didn't surprise me. Did it make me sick though? It sure did!

I do agree R7 feels incomplete. I think it's interesting that I have not a single idea of what's going to happen next, but my biggest regret is indeed that Till's death doesn't seem to do justice to his character or characterization.

Till, the rebellious misfit, always breaking rules to the point he has to be physically restrained, completely beaten by despair and trauma once again, dying on stage after he got a slight glimpse of hope he can never actually reach.

This is peak tragedy, and a beautifully animated one at that, but it doesn't feel like a compelling character development. If Till is truly dead, then he dies with the potential of being so much more. And this is truly sad and disappointing.

And this is why his death would make me sadder than Sua's or Ivan's. They got to choose their deaths and what it would mean for them, Till didn't. He was suffering and overwhelmed. He only accepted his fate because he got to know Mizi was still alive before his final moments. He got to die in her embrace, which is probably the only thing he could've asked for if that were to happen.

Sua's death got to introduce us to the reality of Alien Stage.

Ivan's death was an emotional climax. It conclused his character arc in a devastating way, but gave him a meaningful ending nonetheless.

Their deaths let us understand what kind of world Alien Stage takes place in : a cruel world where humans are pets to aliens, if not simple disposal. A world where feelings are never reciprocated until it's too late, where you long for something impossible until you realize you should've paid attention to what was right in front of your eyes, too.

Alien Stage is a show where the candidates' suffering are seen and consumed as mere entertainment.

In this system, I believe Sua's and Ivan's meaningful deaths are anomalies. Till's death is the standard. An extremely unfair event, result of an extremely unfair competition. This isn't about who deserves to survive, but about who manages to. If anything, I think the aliens are relieved Till is dead, as he was mostly a bother to them. Luka is beloved and accommodating.

A world where death is the easy escape, if not almost a selfish one. Sacrifice is an act of love, but also an act of egocentricity. The sacrifice aims to be remembered as selfless and generous, but in the end, they only "run away without any sense of responsibility". The gift sounds beautiful when actually, it might only be rotten.

In such a world, how can a sacrifice ever be useful? I guess Ivan's wasn't. A sacrifice only happens to create a possibility, a chance, a what if.

Another very frustrating part of Till's death to me is that I thought he had the power to be a protagonist. I still stand by it but he was robbed of this agency. Him being used as a narrative device for Mizi's protagonist plotline (at least that's what I believe) feels a bit cruel, even narratively.

Alien Stage can be a frustrating story because it seems there is no way out, which is ultimately not something people are seeking for very often in a story. I still hope there's a way out somewhere, maybe not for Till, but that would already be something.

As for now, it seems Mizi's role is to manage to make Sua's sacrifice, as well as all of these deaths, worth something. This is the 50th season of Alien Stage. The pile of corpses is leaking red.

I do wonder where the story is going to head.

At the very least, Till wasn't unknown till the end. You could say that being loved, even for a blink, makes one's life worthy to be lived.

i adore alien stage sm tho man like,,, its such a good media in execution yes but also in concept bc !! It really is a media where you CANT judge the characters based off of any pre-established societal moral, emotional, and otherwise systems bc as far as has been established from what im aware of, there really is none for these characters to follow that is made in any human sense, which just makes it so deliciously complex to consider how we are meant to come to a conclusion about this characters actions, or feelings, or reactions because how were any of them meant to know how to moderate them, control them, feel them healthily?

Like i'm so nervous for Luka vs Till bc already Luka is the most controversial main characters in terms of his existence (id honestly say Ivan is behind him on that too bc,,, the reactions to the forced kiss and stuff is also really interesting to observe from people who arent bothering to conceptualize that the laws and systems of that world is so vastly different to ours and that they cant run by the same societal values we've grown with bc they are treated as commodities in most cases, pets.) so im highly anticipating actions/reveals etc that may come with round 7 regarding him, maybe regarding hyuna and her brother, maybe he copies mizi?? maybe he copies ivan?? im kinda getting off point here but...

So-so like, what IS alien stage?

ALRIGHT SO,

alien stage is an original art project collaboration mainly between 2 animators on youtube, vivinos and qmeng, as well as korean multi-media production house studio lico!

the premise: many years into the future, long after earth was invaded by aliens and became totally uninhabitable, humans have basically been reduced to pets/slaves by aliens as the dominant species. the series specifically centers around an annual music contest, where humans who have been raised to sing and perform their whole lives compete 1-on-1 for audience approval - and only the winner of each round gets to live. this contest is a VERY BIG BUSINESS for the wealthiest of alien society. so it's basically the hunger games but with music in space lmao

there are 6 main characters who are all connected to each other in different ways, and their performances are used to show us who they are, what kind of lives they've lived, and especially their relationships. it's extremely character focused, but because there's not really any normal dialogue, you have to pay close attention to everything to understand what's going on. you probably won't catch everything on your first watch!!

it also just has really cool and interesting animation and BANGER SONGS. every single one is amazing.

What if Luka expects Hyuna to come like she did in his round with Mizi and he is plotting something.He has the trust of aliens,the love of the public and no one would suspect him to do something outside the box,far from the image he created of himself.Hyuna made her appearence in round 5 when we didn't expected it. If the round isn't entirely dedicated to Ivan and Till,this may be an option.He may confront Mizi and Hyuna,they may not be able to rescue Ivan and Till and not make it in time. Luka may not appear at all.

Ok this is the worst joke I could ever make.

Oohh. Luka appearing in ROUND 6 would honestly be insane. I thought about him making an appearance in the short teaser scene before credits, but if he actually confronted anyone himself that would be so interesting. Imagine all 6 of them in the same episode... the same room... no way... the Alien Stage would be real...

Luka attempting to sabotage Mizi and Hyuna is such an intriguing concept. I do think he's figured out that Hyuna will be returning, he grew up with her, after all. He's most likely aware of her penchant for protecting people. He probably expects Mizi to come back for the only friends she has left, too. He couldn't do anything the first time he saw Hyuna after ROUND 5, but he might be more eager to get his hands on her now. If we get our first adult Hyuna and Luka interaction during ROUND 6 I'd actually go insane. as much as I hope for it though, I'm not sure whether or not it will actually happen. ROUND 6 already has a lot going for it. A final confession of love already makes for a heavy episode, but with Till's newly revealed backstory added to the mix? Mizi and Hyuna's attempt at a jailbreak? The whole video would probably need an entire week to be processed and even comprehended, especially if they want to go into extensive detail on each aspect. Still, though, if Luka interfered... if Mizi and Hyuna were unable to save anyone and had to defeatedly return to the rebellion base carrying the weight of their failure, well, I DON'T THINK I'D BE REACHABLE FOR AT LEAST 10 BUSINESS DAYS I'd have to go into hiding in order to cope with that. But who knows! The fun part about VIVINOS videos is that they're always gonna leave you fucked up in one way or another!

AKUGETSU COVERING ALL-IN. TILL COVERING HYUNA'S SONG. I've posted so many times about this day holy shit its finally real. It really does suit him! Do you think AKUGETSU is

1) hinting that Till is joining the rebellion

While I do think it's true that ROUND 6 went kinda viral because it was so highly anticipated, and existing fans were posting like crazy, I ALSO think that if the kiss scene happened w Mizi and Sua not as many new ppl would've checked it out.

Vivinos has been the the Horror Yuri channel for forever, and as a long time fan I am so immensely happy for Vivinos and Qmeng and all the voice actors for this awesome success, this series is absolutely getting the attention it deserves! But I also do wish ppl wouldn't forget that aspect of the channel tho, bc it seems like ppl think its The Ivantill Show. and i care about them a lot too! like i love them! their dynamic is incredible a lot to sink your teeth into BUT SO IS MIZISUAS! I meant to answer this over a month ago but tumblr fucking ate the post when I was done and this upset me SO MUCH that I got too depressed to type it up again. Whoops.

So! Yeah! Uh! I like Alien Stage a lot! Like a lot a lot! I'm a big fan of the music and I super enjoy MV series in general such as Milgram.

But for Alien Stage, I was actually a huge VIVINOS fan long before she posted Alien Stage. Every fucking day I think about Pink B**ch Club and cry, cry, cry that it never got a true resolution. If I didn't like Alien Stage so much, I'd feel resentful lol. But I do HIGHLY rec her other videos. They're all super abstract as hell but striking and endlessly gripping. The first one I ever saw (and I still wuv it) was Magical Ruru. My favorite is probably Jordan River. Keep in mind a lot of the videos are straight-up horror so pay close attention to the emojis in the titles.

(My favorites are Gyaruko and VYT-24, but Charlotte's song is really, really fucking good.)

Alien Stage though is a pure delight. I like it a lot! I'm a big fan of idol culture stuff and mixing it in with a battle royale tournament is pretty exciting. The characters are, as a whole, a delight! I really love Sua! The way she's characterized in the supplementary material is shockingly compelling! And she has the best singing voice! Mizi's journey is suitably heartbreaking! Hyuna is soooooo cool! I love her fun vibes and the way she reclaims singing as part of her rebellion! Ivan's also SUPER interesting in the supplementary material because of his relationship with Sua being him clearly wanting solidarity but unable to accept Sua's personality in addition to her not being "Like Him" (i.e. having an unrequited love). Luka is beyond fascinating. I love characters who fully throw themselves into a harmful system to keep themselves afloat in a self-destructive way. His charisma is also off the charts. You can definitely see why he's a champion! Till.

My favs are definitely Sua, Luka, and Hyuna, but Ivan and Mizi aren't that far behind! And while I don't really like Till, he's still one of my favorite singers...even if the mizisua cover of Cure blows the original out of the water. It's still a good song! Blink Gone is CRAZY fucking good and solidified Luka as my favorite out of the guys! Aside from My Clemantis, it's probably my favorite song. But I like all of the other songs a lot, too.

So, yeah, I think Alien Stage is neat!

I maybe wrong,maybe I'm too excticed for the next round,but at 23 seconds,in the teaser, I hear Till sing ''Watashi o itsukete'' or something similiar. I googled the meaning using the translator and the result ''私 お 医つけて'' had me more confused and surprised! It means ''Call me a doctor'' ! Cure is the title of the Round and I thought I was not that delusional. MAYBE. I SAY MAYBE,THERE IS A CONNECTION.

But I didn't exactly hear "Watashi o" I heard "You are" and then the "Itsukete" but that's just like a pov difference. since I'm bad at hearing things when its muffled n stuff and I don't know Korean I may be mishearing so im taking that with a grain of salt, but if you're right, and that rlly is what Till said then that is definitely playing into the "you're my cure" theme that some people are saying is gonna be put into the song. or given all the medical imagery related to Till it could have a connection to that too.

Saw your ask to suggest non-American or Japanese animation things, and I don't have much...but can I suggest to you everything by Cartoon Salon? It's an Irish studio and they've done things like Song of the Sea, Secret of Kells, Breadwinner, etc. Except for a few things, I believe most of their stuff is based on Irish mythology. Animation is SO unique and so beautiful, and the storytelling is just otherworldly. Different vibes from most movies but just incredible.

Also, may I also add the Korean YouTube animator Vivinos? She does this combination of beautiful original aesthetic animated MVs and psychological horror (I think she has two projects going on right now but I mostly know her through Alien Stage). Studio Lico also has an adorable short YouTube series called A Day Before Us (I think it has 2 or 3 seasons, one which might be a prequel). The world of YouTube shorts that tell the most poignant stories under 3 minutes is vast and also somewhat painful...but I can't remember any others asides from those two.

I have seen Song of the Sea and other movies by Cartoon Saloon! I’m part Irish myself so it makes me really happy to see Irish myth told and animated so beautifully!!! I’ve got such a soft spot for selkie stories. However I had no idea they did an adaptation of Breadwinner! I read that as a kid; I’ll have to watch it!

I am also familiar with Vivinos! I’ve seen at least a few of her amvs but not Alien Stage - psychological horror is something I absolutely love so I’ll be sure to check it out.

I guess it never occurred to me to look at YouTube shorts… but it is absolutely possible to tell amazing stories in a short amount of time. Thank you for the recommendations, Note! :D

I don't get why some people are so aggressive in fandoms. It's supposed to be fun. For you and for others. So behave like that.

For example, Alien Stage. There is yaoi, yuri and straight shippings. Technicly, there is something for everybody, so everybody should be happy, no?

WRONG.

They get on each others back and downgrade other peoples ships, because their ship is their "OTP". Like, dude, chill. Just enjoy what you enjoy. Why do you give so many fucks, is your ego that fragile?

Why do you care so fucking much what other people think? You are no more or no less in the wrong, when you strangle them and ask for confirmation or validation.

For example: I am a hardcore Ivantill shipper. I can definetly see the apppeal of LukaHyuna and MiziSua too! They're beautiful ships and deserve as much limelight as Ivantill.

I even get why Ivan wouldn't come back. Vivinos doesn't want to have a "favorite child", and treats the yaoi ship the same as the yuri ship. If Sua doesn't come back, Ivan doesn't either.

It's true that yaoi ships have more fans (or at least less, but more vocal ones) than yuri. That doesn't mean anyone is illegitimizing your ship. It's wonderful, and cute, and honestly way healthier than Ivantill. No need to wish to "delete the male gays".

Same to the Ivantill guys. Do you really have to scream "ivan is not dead trust" everytime you comment somewhere? we get it, its the meme that makes the dream work, but even I, as much as I wish Ivan would come back, find it sometimes obnoxious. Chill.

Maybe I am just tired faster of this stuff as a veteran. For a lot of young'uns, the fandom experience is something new and exciting. I just wish they would treat others with respect. A community doesn't work properly with at least an ounce of tolerance.
