SKFJKFJFKFJK well if i remember my geological classes correctly. basically lava sits in one spot on the surface for too long and it cracks and contracts around points of stress which lead to pentagram tubes. they also cool perpendicular to the ground as it was at the time ! which can lead to hints about the formation of places when the lava lake was cooling.

also it can happen to felsic and intermediate igneous rock too its just rarer. i would give you an example except i was running on 4 hours sleep 12 hours no food when we were there so i dont remember anything about it. and for all i know it was a fever dream.

ive got so many pics of them bc rn i live in a basalt floodplains w a shitton of coulees and im always clambering around them where im not supposed to be. 👍 last year we tried going to devils postpile except it was buried under 5 feet of snow so we went and swam in a hidden lake instead
