looked up pass rates/score distribution for different aps and it's interesting that the pass rates are actually higher for the science aps than the english/history ones AND the higher level sciences have higher pass rates than the lower (ie Calc BC has a higher pass rate than AB and Physics C has a higher pass rate than the other physics APs). especially considering the fact that all my friends in high school who took stem APs when i took history APs were always banging on about how much more difficult they were.
to be fair i think there also may be a higher barrier to entry, like the people who would have gotten a 1 in Calc BC would have never signed up in the first place (and I say this as someone who probably would have gotten a 1 and also consequently never signed up in the first place. But my friends never signed up for APUSH either). also very likely that more schools offer APUSH than Calc BC. not sure how APUSH and Calc AB would compare though but the pass stats are more similar there.
#to be fair i probably would have done worse on AP Calc than my friend would have done in APUSH but i got a higher score in APUSH than she#did in Calc. NOT THAT IT MATTERS TEN YEARS LATER#im just a little sore about being the only non stem friend

Ap lang: omg I took a mock and it was so easy why was this test so hard 😭 only the mcq though, but all of my friends said the mcq was easy??? I thought it was devastating, probably a 2 but my essays were so good so maybe 3
Ap seminar: ok I think my performance tasks went great but I hate digital testing, so 3, maybeeee 4??? Please
Ap calc: omg amazing but I’m worried I’m just so dumb the test was easy yk what I mean? So I think 4, but I could be totally wrong
Ap chem: best exam fr, I think I got a 4! I had form D so I hope my curve is good!! Form O was so easy from what I saw so maybe my score will dip, but maybe it will benefit? Who knows

Drew my persona with Otto again!!
Originally drew the sketch after some graduation required state testing I had to take earlier this month (let's all hope I passed or else I need to do good on SATs oops) and at first I wasn't exactly planning to finish the sketch buuuuuut things changed. I worked on this on and off as a stress relief. School's just been busy again especially since the 3rd marking period ended a week ago and now I'm in the final stretch.
Though some school work as calmed down with the start of the 4th and final marking period thst makes room for more testing oops. I have my APUSH test coming up Friday which is yeah. I'm trying not to worry about it. It would be nice to pass and get the credits but tbh even if I don't pass it'll still look good that I even took the class. I got some state testing later in the month but I don't have to worry about that since those aren't graduation requirement abd I'm pretty sure we only take them because the school is stuck in a contract. Last test in May thst I can think of is my driver's test. My mom forgot to cancel my appointment so looks like that's happening now. If I fail I see it coming and if I pass run cause I'll probably be a road hazard. That should be all until finals week in June.
Learned while finishing this up it's lesbian visibility week. Soooo upon learning that I just added my flags. In case you didn't know hi I'm Nat (also go by Dawn) and I'm an aroflux nonbinary ace lesbian who uses they/it. I'm also polyam but I wanted to keep the number even oops and the flag didn't really fir right oops.
Bonus, here's me fooling around on character ai and accidentally uncovering possible unresolved daddy issues.

i'm trying to be more honest these days than i was when i was 17, which is why i'm publicly patting myself on the back for surviving (even though i've been hell-bent on my own self-destruction for as long as i can remember); 5 years ago today i survived a suicide attempt- which is a weird thing to talk about without making it into a joke. honestly i think its even weirder how we have so many jokes about "grippy sock vacations" and funny stories from the psych ward- i didn't have a vacation & i don't have any funny stories from those 10 days i spent washing myself with hand soap, or having to ask the nurses to change my bandages every morning because my arm would rip itself open again while i slept, or eating zoloft for breakfast, lunch, & dinner, or the ache in my neck from the absence of things i had been snorting off of my apush textbook in the middle of the night.
it feels so weird to be alive on this day every year, almost as weird as it feels on my birthday, but i do it & sometimes it's not so bad, although i'm not proud of myself or my life, even still. sometimes i catch myself enjoying a small, insignificant moment ("this is what it means to be alive", i think) or smiling or laughing so hard my jaw hurts- but then i get sadangryempty all over again at feeling little blisses like that slip through my fingers like water, having the realization of "if it's good now, it will be bad again" smack me in the face, or "if it's good now, it will soon be the past" stab me in the heart. but it does get better, even if just for a second.
i want so badly to grasp these moments in both my hands, to craft them into tangible realities of my own happiness & wrap them around me like a warm scarf instead of a noose. the passing of time is humiliating and exhausting, but today it's just a reason to dance under the flooded sunlight through my kitchen windows to a song i was gifted by somebody i care for and who cares for me, to find comfort in the shiny etchings of my own wrist, to grin at the face in the mirror, to laugh at the thing that stares back.

Talking to underclassmen and learning that apeuro is harder that apush is wild
Im like "i have 1 maybe two pages of homework a week" and my friend across from me shoves his notebook in my face and is like "this is the only way im passing this class, its not required but i have 2 hrs of hw from it every other night"
Though to be fair a B+ isnt passing to him either so its probably not the best example
#Why are my friends so academically competitive#Mf also called me stupid for complaining about my honors math class#God forbid i be frustrated with a class i accidentally signed up for#highschool bullshit#I cannot wait to graduate get me out

I Never Told You What I Do...in general
A/N: It’s very me of me to come back out of.....everything with a very self-indulgent fic because of......normal teen problems? Anyways feel free to ask me my qualms about being ND and being jealous of people in relationships.Title is an MCR reference. Also yes this is accurate, I do in fact have an APUSH quiz tomorrow and I’m writing this instead of doing my reading.
Warnings: implied masturbation, mild suggestive jokes, a little test anxiety, making out, spoilers for the movie Spree
Tag List: @bisexualnathanyoung, @super-unpredictable98
“Luci, I literally came over to your house to study, and you did better than I did on the review. It’s literally history and you know how your dad is. You’ve got this.”
“I know, I just feel this....grossness in my chest about it,” he replies, fist on his chin. “Almost like-”
“You can’t breathe? Yeah, I know, that’s the inevitable test anxiety I’m afraid.” you reply, patting his hand. Lucien puts his hand over-top yours and gently rubs it. A rare smile pops up onto his face, one that goes up to his eyes.
“Thanks babe.”
The late bell rings, and the door to the classroom closes. The quiz papers are passed out, and before you know it, you’re 15 questions deep and writing down short answers. Across from you, Lucien’s leg is bobbing up and down, but his pencil is moving, and he seems to be on the last page of the test.
“Who were two writers who emerged from the Second Great Awakening? Explain one of the writer’s beliefs, and how they differed from initial American beliefs.”
You read the question a few times before it processes in your mind, and you get to writing. “Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau; Thoreau wrote about how nature is a gateway to the greater individualism that secular utopian societies encouraged. America is known for it’s hive mindset, and the belief that nature is something to be connected to, rather than to exploit, directly opposes that.”
You move onto the next question, and before you know it, you’re on the last question of the quiz. Just as you finish it, a fire drill goes off. “Fire drill on a Friday, that’s odd.” you thought to yourself. You make your way out of the classroom door, and catch up to Lucien, who’s a few strides ahead of you.
“Hey Luci honey. How’re you liking the quiz?” you ask him, pinkie in his hand.
“It’s not as bad as I thought it was gonna be. The question about Joseph Smith almost threw me though.” he replied, letting out a huff of air.
The two of you make your way to the baseball field, and you stand in line in front of him. It’s a somewhat chilly day, with cirrus clouds dusting the sky, sun shining. A breeze makes it way into the field, forming goosebumps on your skin. Lucien notices and pulls you closer to him, breath dusting over your skin. You two sit there for a moment, and he holds out an earbud to you.
“You’ll never make me leave, I’ll wear this on my sleeve.
Give me a reason to believe.
So give me all your poison. And give me all your pills.
And give me all your hopeless hearts
And make me ill.”
You close your eyes, and remember the moment you looked at Lucien and went “Yeah....he’s cool.”
The first week of school was unnerving for a multitude of reasons. Firstly, new people after a while of being....not near them. Food, romance. “Ew, you thought to yourself.” The gas in your intestines did little to aid you either, but your “I only do every day once.” philosophy was the only thing keeping you from running out of the auditorium doors.
You sit a chair away from the previous person, and put your head onto your binder, wishing that the day would pass as quickly as it came after open house. (Which you definitely almost didn’t have an anxiety attack at.) A person sits a chair away from you, and you reel at their appearance, and observe the way they slouch in the wooden chair, phone in hand, headphones in ear. Their hair is a pale grey, most of it shaved off.
“Nice outfit.” you reply, looking at his clunky boots with envy.
“Huh? Oh thanks, made it myself.”
You recognized him from the corner of your 1st and 5th period classes, which he usually didn’t actively participate in, giving a half-hearted “here” for attendance at “Bloodmarch”. This, however, was your first time properly speaking to him.
“Yeah, you kinda give off that punk-y vibe. That and I can hear you blasting My Chem from 2 seats over.”
“You listen to MCR?” he asks, earplug ripped from his ear. Nice helix piercing.
“I’m full of surprises man.”
He leans closer to you and begins a full conversation about the emo scene in the early 2000s, and you answer back enthusiastically. He seems really passionate about it, and even as the bell rings, you two keep chatting. “Oh my god, the things I would’ve done to be able to get tickets to Warped tour man.” “Same!! I was the size of a fucking banana at that point. I mentally attended it.”
First period passes in a flash, and Lucien pats your shoulder when you get up.
“We can keep talking at lunch. I have Bio for 4th period and I’ve seen you at lunch, so I think we’re set.” he says, voice slightly muffled by his mask.
“Cool! I’m right outside your class, if I have the teacher right, so it won’t be too much of a trek to get to you.”
You two wave goodbye and part ways, and for the first time in a long time, you find yourself hopeful to hang out with a real person.
As promised, you two talk at lunch, and chat on the way to 5th period, almost getting in trouble for giggling too loud at images of “pickle gerard”.
The days pass by, and you find yourself looking forward to going to school because of Lucien, talking to him any moment you’re free. When fall break rolls around, he asked you to spend it with him.
“I’m seeing a movie on Saturday, Halloween Ends. You want to come with?” he asks, and you think “Oh fuck, is this a date? I’ve....never been on one. What in the hell do I expect-,”. Shelving that for another time, you agree.
“I’m going to the library first though. Is that cool with your dad?” you ask, skipping a song on a playlist.
“Oh yeah, definitely. He has this huge library in his house, but he loves watching movies, so he’s probably gonna pop in.”
You smile at that, and as 3:30 rolls around later in the day, you meet Lucien downstairs, and he checks his phone, replying to a message. You stand near him, and he grabs your hand, “My dad parks leagues away from where everyone else is, you’re uh....gonna need a guide.”
Lucien was a big fat liar.
His dad, Damien, was about 7 feet away from the entrance of the school, in full Victorian garb. He looks up from his own phone, and his face lights up at the sight of his son.
“Lucien my dear boy! How was your day?” he asks, bringing Lucien into a hug, kissing the top of his head. He grunted at the contact, but his shoulders slumped a few inches, melting into the touch of his dad.
“It was good, a little long because of the testing. But I got to skip 5th period which was a relief because I didn’t feel like shitting my pants (”Language!”) over another test.”
“Luci, that’s one of the 2 classes we share, do you secretly hate my guts?” you retort from behind him, a teasing look on your face. He chuckles and replies with “Only that you can be a real pain....and I hear your guts literally all the time.”
“Oh please, Lucien, I never make beans anymore because of the way the pillows are simply saturated with the flatulence you let out. Now, who’s this?” Damien asks, a hand on his son’s shoulder.
“Just three raccoons in a trenchcoat, sir.” you reply. he seems to push himself out a bit more at the word “sir”, a grin accompanying his face. You set your laptop bag down, and extending your hand for Mr. Bloodmarch to kiss, a custom Lucien reminded you of.
From behind Damien, you see Lucien tap his dad on the shoulder, whispering something in his ear, a blush creeping up his cheeks and neck.
“Oh! I’ve heard so much about you, dear. Lucien talks about you nonstop. He’s never been much of a chatterbox, but when it comes to you, he never seems to run out of words.” Damien said, smile stretching to his eyes, (”Just like Lucien’s.” you think to yourself.) He continues talking, much to Lucien’s display.
As you walk to the car, Damien quiets a bit, trying to talk as the cars pass by. “I can’t walk, talk, and look for traffic. There’s going to be a smattering of dead vampire upon the pavement I’m afraid.” he jokes, opening the door for you.
“Guests get to pick the music.” Lucien explains as Damien hands you a few CDs, and turns the car on.
The ride to the library was fairly short, and the three of you headed into the building, and split up. Lucien stopped off at the kid section “I do early childhood development internships, might as well read the source material.” and you and Damien walk up to the YA and Teen section, out of breath from the 4 story walk.
“Damn it, they don’t have Cinderella is Dead.” you mutter to yourself as you peruse through the shelves, pulling the books that catch your eye to the edge of the shelf.
Damien heads to the section you’re in, and gasps excitedly at the manga selection, almost immediately picking a few off the shelves.
“I bind my own fanfiction, you see. I find myself needing more of the main material, and well, here we are.” he explains quickly, finger tapping along the spines of a few copies of “Naruto”. “That may have been too much information.” he replies, looking away quickly.
“Oh no, you’re completely fine. Lucien’s told me about it. And about your home-library. From his description, it sounds absolutely magnificent.” you reply, and it’s clear he appreciates the compliment, as his eyes shine a bit brighter.
“Ah. A word about Lucien and your friendship. I mean not to meddle, but I really do think find that my son is fond of you. Quite fond. He talks about you constantly, dear.” he whispers, looking you in your eye.
“I um....thank you Mr. Bloodmarch. I’m also fond of him. I really enjoy his company. He’s really nice to me, and keeps me sane at school. But you’ve probably heard all that by now.”
“Oh no, I find it interesting. But I do implore you to tell my son these things as well. I fear he may go mad from the times you’ve asked to borrow a pencil, or shared your lunch with him.” he laughs, awaiting an answer.
“I’ll keep that in mind this weekend. Thank you for letting me know.”
The two of you head over to the DVD section, and at the sight of “Spree” you gasp loudly and snatch it from the shelf, cradling it to your torso. The rest of the searching is much less exciting, and you pick a few other things. Lucien meets the two of you downstairs, and you check out.
“Vegetarian lasagna is on the menu for tonight, dear, I hope you’re not allergic to eggplant.” Damien says, over the notes of Mitski playing from the stereo.
“That’s fine by me!”
The evening passes by quickly, and you prepare your sleepover with Lucien, plugging spree into Damien’s large television in the sitting room, and devouring your bowl of mint chocolate chip ice cream. “I’m the only one who eats it, Lucien thinks it tastes of um, toothpaste and shit, I’m afraid.” You laugh at that, and as Kurt meets his demise, you feel yourself slipping into the warmth of sleep, Lucien’s shoulder serving as your pillow.
You wake up the next morning in the guest room, and to the smell of pancakes and vegan sausage. Lucien’s even cuter when he first wakes up, you find, as his hair is a mess (and wavy!), and his low voice dips even deeper, reaching molasses territory with how he seems to trap you in his mumbled greeting. I could get used to this, you think, as you dig into your breakfast.
The rest of the weekend passes without a sitch, save for Lucien’s hand touching yours in the too-salty, but so delicious popcorn. You two discuss the movie afterwards, but not before Lucien confesses to you.
“I uh...like you a lot. And I kinda want you to be my partner...or girlfriend....whatever makes you more comfortable.” he mumbles, blush up to his forehead and ears.
“I’d like that a lot Luce....I’d like that a hell of a lot.”
Damien picks you two up, pinkies touching, and he almost cheers from the front seat. (”Finally! Your friends to lovers has been achieved!!!”) You’re pooped by the time you get home, but not pooped enough to neglect yourself of fantasies you’ve held off on thinking about, which may now become a reality.
~
You snap back to reality, and Lucien is still chilling on your neck, his arms wrapped around your form. He hums into your neck (albeit uncomfortable, he’s quite tall and gangly, but not immune to achy bones). The all clear is given for the fire drill, and the intercom comes on to alert everyone to grab their things and report to their 6th period classes.
Lucien hugs you goodbye “See ya at 3:30.” he says, and you head to class, a smile on your face. A lab follows a costing quiz, and you save some of the leftovers for Lucien, who never denies food. “You cooked it babe, even if other people are helped. I’ll gobble it and you down any day of the week.” He, once again, meets you downstairs, and kisses you on the cheek, checking your weekend plans once more.
“Ok so we’re watching The Menu on Saturday, 7pm showing and you’re spending the night, right?” he clarifies, texting the information to Damien, regardless of him being 10 feet away in his car.
“Yeah, that’s good.” you say, feet cracking at the fixed position they’d been in from the day.
At home, you quickly shower, then proceed to lock your door, and collapse into bed. “Tomorrow can’t come soon enough.” you mutter to yourself, slipping a hand past your sleep pants.
The next day arrives, and you spend most of the day pottering around and getting chores done. Once the clock hits 5:30, you head to the bathroom, and freshen up, and put on something other than night-clothes.
“Got your sleep-clothes, phone, charger, money?” your mom asks.
“Yes.”
“Pocket knife, just in case.”
“Um...we’ll come back to that, but I do have two shoes and two iron fists, so I’m sure that counts for something.”
You arrive at the movie theater and get dropped off at the front entrance. Lucien spots you once you’re inside the building, and gives you another kiss on the cheek.
“You ready to get spooked baby?” he asks, hand entwined in yours.
“Hell yeah I am.”
As the movie shows, Lucien begins shifting more and more towards you, even at one point turning his head into your shoulder, a small scream exiting his mouth.
“Like father like son, huh?”
“Shut. Up.” Lucien states, nuzzling his face into your arm. He stays like that for the remainder of the movie, jumping here and there. Once it ends, he slowly gets up, and keeps you at his side “Just in case any creepy chef tries to threaten me.”
Damien’s waiting at the entrance, and noogies his son, who begrudgingly accepts it. “How was the movie, kids?”
“It was good. Nice and spooky. I wonder if I’ll have enough money to get invited to a murderous dinner...like Clue.” Lucien chuckles at that, and kisses your hand, quieting down on the ride back home.
“Alright so, I’ll be out tonight and part of tomorrow morning. I’ll be with Hugo, as he invited me to a wrestling match, and I’d hate to turn him down. I expect the house not to be on fire, no babies running around....and please eat some real food while I’m gone.” he states, spinning his keys in his hand.
“Mhm!” “Yes, dad!” you two reply, Lucien already heading up the stairs with you in tow.
“I mean it, you better be using protection Lucien, you know where the condoms are!” he shouts, hand cupped around his mouth.
“YES, DAD!” he yells back, red flushed with embarrassment.
He takes you up to his room, and flops down onto his bed, springs creaking. He beckons you with his hand, and you sit across from him, heads almost touching.
“So uh....what do you want to do?” he asks, brown eyes shining in the moonlight let in by his curtains.
“Get these movie germs off first. But after that....I think I want to make out with my boyfriend and watch shitty horror movies.” you reply, sitting up to look him in the eye.
“Sounds like a plan.”
True to your word, as soon as you get out of Lucien’s bathroom, you sit next to him, and he smiles at you, putting his phone facedown on his nightstand. Lucien gently kisses you, hand cupping your jaw. He stays like that for a few moments before moving down to your neck, gently nipping the skin there.
His hand drifts down to your waist, and lifts part of your shirt up, rubbing circles and invisible shapes into the flesh. Your hands tangle into his hair, and play with the few inches of hair on the nape of his neck, gently pulling at it. A quiet noise escapes his lips when you accidentally brush against his lap, breaking away to apologize.
“No no no, you’re good. Just...sensitive is all.” he admits, kiss-swollen lips upturned into a shy grin.
“Just kiss me again, Luci.”
“Yes ma’am.” he replies.
The rest of the night is spent in intervals of kissing, with the promised shitty horror movies (”HOW DARE YOU CALL KRAMPUS SHITTY!”) playing in the background. He makes you both sandwiches after you separately...finish in his bathroom, and you cuddle up close to him as the opening sequence of “The Addams Family Values” plays.
“Yeah....I could get used to this.” you think again, as you fall asleep at Lucien’s side, face mashed against his chest.

how you meet | edward cullen
A/N: wowowow after being on Tumblr for 6+ years I would have NEVER imagined my first published writing to this site being Twilight dnvjdfjaskdlmfkl enjoy!! requests are open :)) I will write for Twilight (mainly the Olympic Coven, except Jasper romantically), Star Wars, and Harry Potter
Pairing: Edward Cullen x Fem!Reader
Category: Fluff
Content Warnings: Reader gets unsolicited attention from teenage boys, swear words
when you moved to forks after spring break because of your dad’s work, you’re unanimously nicknamed new girl™ by all of forks high school’s students
and consequently, you’re the new eye candy for your male peers
Forks boys are, well . . . neanderthals douchebags
the ones you’ve met are egotistical, super immature, and super HORNY
. . . you decide to keep your distance
aNyWaYs
you get smooshed into ap u.s. history
apush, baby, apush HAAAAA
the teacher points you to an empty seat next to some pale blonde dude
he gives off weird kid energy at first but then he politely speaks to you
“i’m jasper. welcome to forks” and gives you an acknowledging nod
his eyes are topaz!!!?? woooooooah that’s so cool is that like a genetic defect or smth??
aaaaand your teacher immediately assigns a PROJECT
a fuckin civil war project
you swear you see jasper’s pupils dilate
you hear a chuckle from behind you
and when you turn around you see a pale dude w a dark brown buzzcut and some blonde girl smirking beside him
you later find out that those are his siblings
his fuckin goofy ass siblings
anyways a few weeks pass
you pop in at your dad’s job @ forks hospital and see him chatting w a fellow physician
yet another pale dude with blonde hair
JESUS HOW FUCKING MANY ARE THERE
you approach them and your dad embraces you in a hug
“heeeeyyyy sweet pea! how’s it goin’!”
the doctor he was talking to looks at you fondly
“hello, i’m carlisle cullen” and offers you his hand to shake, which you do
“y/n, carlisle was just inviting us to his house later tonight for some dinner”
dr. hotpants puts his hands in his pockets and humbly grins
“my son jasper tells me you’re his classmate”
oh god he’s one of those pta dads, isn’t he??
“oh, yeah, he’s my partner in history”
he smiles, “that’s wonderful. my wife esme and i would love to have you both over as our guests. it’s not often we have company for dinner. and i’m sure the rest of my children would love to meet you, y/n”
jesus christ how many kids does this guy have?? he looks THIRTY
don’t worry, in the car your dad tells you they’re all adopted lmfao
✰later that night✰✰
their house is HUGE jesus fuckin christ
alice knows (well they all know) about you because of jasper
IMMEDIATELY loves you!!
“hi! i’m alice!!!”
WHOLESOME AS FUCK UGH
i’m EVAPORATING. i’m YODELLING. it’s fine :-)
you thought you weren’t gonna make any pals in forks bc of the weird horny teenage specimens but here we are ;-;
alice envelopes you into a tight hug and you, in shock, grasp her arms to acknowledge this affection
your dad’s chillin near carlisle and esme and he’s silently chuckling
oh . . . they all have black eyes now?? must be the weather
or the fluorescence
you wave at jasper, rosalie, and emmett
you notice the last sibling
he’s very handsome
to you, everything about him was attractive
his soft hair contrasted against his hardened facial features
you could tell he was socially reserved when it comes to new acquaintances, just like you
he physically isolates himself from his family once you and your dad arrived
he was standing alone near a corner away from everyone else
you make eye contact with him and his mental barrier breaks down
he loses his cool
his face contorts
his lips twist into puckered lines
he claps his hand over his mouth and vacates the room immediately, running up the stairs
everyone notices his sudden departure
his family is shocked but tbh not really
✰✰✰ eddy boy is a lil shy around girls sometimes ✰✰✰
carlisle breaks the impending doom of silence
“i apologize for edward leaving us so abruptly. he hasn’t been feeling well as of late; please excuse his absence. . .”
you awkwardly pretend like that never happened
you feel it in your gut that your presence disturbed him
and not only did you disturb him
but you disturbed him so bad that he had to leave
for why?? you don’t know
you then realize that everyone else in the room knows he left bc of you
. . . anyway you all sit down at the table but you and your dad are the only ones who have plates
your dad notices this too
“hey, aren’t you guys gonna eat too?”
esme grins warmly at him
“oh, don’t worry about us. we just wanted to welcome you to town!”
uhhh, ok ma’am
alice talks to you for almost the entire time you were eating ;-; i love her
you’re also talking to jasper, cracking some apush jokes
you, jasper, emmett, and rosalie talk shit about your classmates and teacher
“why the fuck -- *carlisle glares at emmett* -- heck did mr. whatshisface give us a project RIGHT AFTER BREAK???!!”
“and he paired y/n and jasper!! they’re civil war n e r d s!! they’re gonna get the best grade” rosalie chimes in
“not if we--”
alice ❀politely❀ tells them to stfu
you giggle
bonding with your new pals <33
allllllright so it’s a few days later
you’re walking home from school
it’s drizzling, as always, but you know that it’s gonna rain harder if you don’t get home fast enough
and some asshole
some persistent prick from your class
keeps flirting with you
he’s talking about how he hasn’t been able to take his eyes off of you since you came to forks
he’s insisting he has your phone number, that he’s gonna take you out on dates. . .
you hate it
you’re so uncomfortable but you can’t really do anything about it
s u d d e n l y
a car pulls up beside where you and the guy are walking on the sidewalk and screeches to a stop
the window is rolled down and you see a familiar face
it’s edward cullen
with one hand on the wheel, he looks at both of you and clenches his jaw
“get in”
even though he was undeniably weird a few weeks ago, you concede
you never got to speak to him, but you knew that edward was trustworthy
you practically launch yourself into his silver volvo c30™
he shoots a stone-cold glare to the jackass on the sidewalk and drives away
honestly, it wouldn’t take much for anyone (not just a mind-reading vampire) to know how uncomfortable you are after what just happened with that guy
your body language is tense
your arms are crossed tightly
your body is pointed towards the passenger window as your knees touch the door
tears are welling up in your eyes
it would be mere seconds until you fully broke down
you’re embarrassed, to say the least
you’re embarrassed that you were put in a vulnerable situation, like a damsel in distress
and of all people, the handsome and mysterious guy--
the handsome and mysterious guy you began crushing on
--who feels seemingly indifferent towards you swept you off your feet and helped you when you needed someone
that made things even more embarrassing
and the tears started streaming down your heated cheeks
edward immediately sensed your unease (hmm wonder why, but also who wouldn’t sense it???)
he’s pissed.
absolutely livid
that asshole had a d e a t h w i s h
he knew you didn’t want to address your unsolicited encounter, so . . .
*awkwardly clears throat* “are you enjoying the weather?”
you choked
you did not expect him to ask that
nor did you expect him to talk at. all.
you smile through your tears and laugh
you can’t help but laugh
he’s just so awkward and cute
his half-baked plan of indirectly distracting you definitely worked
you started to excitedly talk about the rain and how much you love gloomy, cloudy days
. . . and then the elephant in the room
the inevitable first impression from a few days ago
“i’m sorry for my behavior from our first meeting. i wasn’t feeling well, and i wouldn’t have wanted for you or your father to be affected by my illness”
you’re a little skeptical at first
buuuuut you give him the benefit of the doubt and dismiss his apology
“that’s okay. it’s allergy season, anyway. i’m glad you’re feeling better”
you have no idea how bad i wanted to make a spanish flu joke right there
a small, soft smile lifts the corners of his lips “i’m edward cullen”
you look at him and return the smile
t h e t e a s i n g e n e r g y
“i’m y/n”
the car approaches your house after time seems to have flown by
your dad looks at you both as he walks to his car to go to work
he waves at edward
edward smiles and waves back at him as he enters the car
you gratefully thank edward for the ride, careful not to dwell on the prior circumstances
as you open the passenger door, edward grabs your wrist
!!he grabs your wrist!!
he insists on being your ride to and from school from now on
you object and exit the car
but
b u t
edward smirks, leaning towards the open door
“i’ll see you in the morning, y/n”
your jaw drops
and then he closes the door and speeds off
you watch him drive away and your heartbeat becomes arrhythmic
a garden of butterflies is unleashed in your stomach
blood rushes to your cheeks once more
you smile to yourself before heading inside
secretly anticipating tomorrow morning :’)

Prom Queen: Chapter 2
First || Previous || Next
______________________________
Word Count: 1,900
Pairings: Endgame Prinxiety, Platonic LAMP, more could be included at a later point
Warning: Swearing, food mentions (Let me know if I missed anything, this one seemed fairly tame!)
______________________________
Summary: He missed Roman. High school had been, in the grand scheme of things, largely without his best friend.
(Make sure to read the notes at the end if you want to hear my thoughts on the chapter! As always, feel free to let me know if you want to be added to my taglist for this story or just my art and writing ones in general! Enjoy!)
______________________________
High school wasn’t great but it certainly didn’t seem to be terrible either. That’s what Virgil was gathering from the whole experience anyways. It definitely didn’t hold as much of the awkwardness in terms of trying to find himself and who he was as a person like middle school had brought about.
But still, there were still a fair share of complications. Roman’s popularity throughout the years had started to become one of them.
Neither of them had honestly expected it really. Theater put Roman in the spotlight, both literally and figuratively, that was where part of his newfound popularity came from. With that little bit of exposure, people started to take notice of him.
First it had been Roman running late to English a few times when they started out freshman year.
That expanded to Roman joining some clubs Virgil was content to stay out of for a couple days in the week.
More interaction with more people meant Roman got to talking with some interesting people from student council through his Model UN club meetings, including a familiar face from theater serving as their stage manager in the upcoming fall production.
“Hey guys, there’s someone I’d like you to meet!” Roman said excitedly as he dragged along a guy that looked around their grade, firm hands on his shoulders. Roman beamed as Virgil and Patton looked up from Virgil’s phone. “This is Logan!”
Patton smiled at Logan and held out a hand. “Patton Hart, it’s nice to meet you Logan!”
At the sight of Patton’s hand reached out to him, Virgil noticed Logan visibly relax, reaching out to shake Patton’s.
“Hello Patton,” Logan merely said with a nod.
“And of course, Logan, I’ve told you about my best friend Virgil,” Roman’s voice cut through, Virgil’s gaze flickering over to the impossibly widening grin on Roman’s face at that little detail.
Logan nodded once more. “Ah yes, Roman talks about you often.”
“Nothing but bad things I assume?” Virgil snorted, smirking at Roman’s mock gasp of offense.
“No, he speaks rather highly of you, Virgil. Oftentimes it gets in the way of things such as letting him running lines and letting me work on my own work for his play,” Logan commented, giving Roman a pointed look towards the latter half of his statement.
“A boy can’t talk about his best friend? Harsh, Specs!”
Patton laughed at the two of them bickering. “So how’d you and Logan meet?”
“Model UN, he’s done a much better job than I have! He’s trying to show me the ropes but he’s definitely much smarter than me at it!” Roman said with a chuckle, sitting down with Logan doing so as well.
“He says that but he isn’t doing too poorly, honestly Roman,” Logan sighed.
“Yeah yeah, but not as good as you. Now hush and let me tell them my story!”
Roman considered joining student council by the end of freshman year but decided theater was already a large commitment.
Sophomore year rolled around before Virgil knew it and Roman was cast as the lead role for the fall production as well as getting on the sophomore homecoming court.
Homecoming carnival was fairly nice as Roman practically dragged him and Logan along. Virgil didn’t have half a bad time though he admittedly just stayed by Patton who was working at one of his club booths. Roman was surrounded by too many people at one point for Virgil to really want to follow him anyways.
Spring semester of sophomore year was pretty uneventful aside from Roman somehow getting even more popular. Virgil could barely get a word of conversation in with him after their school’s spring production of Beauty and the Beast, despite him going to nearly every night of the show’s run. Patton was good company during one of the nights though and the two went out for milkshakes afterwards.
“Virgil! Gosh, I really don’t need you seeing me cry,” Roman laughed as he scooped Virgil up in a tight hug before pulling away. “You didn’t have to come for closing night!”
“I wanted to, you know?” Virgil asked. “Also holy shit are you hot.”
“Oh trust me, I know! My sheer beauty is truly a thing to behold!” Roman teased, only for Virgil to shove him with a snort.
“Congratulations Roman, you did a great job!” one of their classmates said in passing.
“Thank you Cissy!” Roman called after her with a proud grin on his face.
“No, you know what I mean, you must be dying under the lights,” Virgil chuckled.
“Oh, that-!”
“Roman, you did amazing, look at you!” another person said, coming over to give Roman a hug.
“Thank you, and thank you for coming!” Roman replied.
“How could I not? You did great!” the woman said. “Hey, have you seen Chloe around? I’ve been trying to find the poor girl for ages, she might’ve been swamped.”
“I think she might’ve gone to go change, I think she’ll be out soon!”
Virgil zoned out a little as Roman continued to make conversation for a little longer.
“Ro, you down for going to get ice cream after you free yourself from your wire prison?” Virgil asked once he thought Roman’s attention was finally back on him but a hand was clapped on to Roman’s back.
“Hey dude, awesome job, how’d your voice hold up?” one of the other actors, Justin if Virgil remembered correctly, asked.
“My throat is honestly totally killing me, I can’t wait to drink my weight in tea when I get home,” Roman laughed, wincing for emphasis.
“I feel you, I think I’m going to head home after I change,” Justin said, running a hand through his hair and fixing his glasses. “You planning on going out with the rest of the cast afterwards?”
“Nah, Virgil and I are going to get ice cream and then I am going to sleep like there’s no tomorrow!”
“Fair, fair, I’ll see you on Monday!”
By the time that Roman was finally free, a dozen people had asked Roman for picture and Virgil, with a quick text, told him that his mom had to pick him up unexpectedly.
Logan started to hang out with Virgil and Patton during lunch by the time junior year came by, only skipping a portion of Wednesdays in order to go to student council meetings.
By this point in their time in high school, lots of changes happened but some things still stayed pretty consistent. Roman decided against auditioning for the fall play but still seemed to remain as busy as ever with the theater competitions he was now taking part in, fitting in clubs in seemingly any place possible. Logan had become the junior year president for student council, still taking part in Model UN and a few AP classes definitely keeping him busy. Patton had been the one to change the least aside from Virgil himself. Virgil was happy that both he and Patton were both taking AP studio art. Apart from that, the two of them just focused on trying to stay sane.
Prom came up during their junior year as a topic of discussion (seeing as only the juniors and seniors could go on their own) and the four of them decided to go together as a group. It was a disaster in Virgil’s opinion and he had to leave early when Roman was asked for a dance by one of the popular girls in their grade. He felt sick to think about it.
Virgil stared up at the ceiling for a while the night of prom after he’d gotten back home, trying to figure out what was even happening at this point. A girl had asked for a dance, Roman accepted.
Except suddenly, Virgil remembered just how many times Roman had arrived late to lunch, how many times he’d sat down only to realize he’d had club meetings, how many times Roman would be preoccupied with rehearsals and homework and conversations in the halls before English. The study sessions at Roman’s house had become minimal and Virgil’s interactions with Roman’s brother Remus were more frequent than the interactions with Roman himself.
He missed Roman. High school had been, in the grand scheme of things, largely without his best friend. It still didn’t feel right, like he was missing something with the realization he’d come to.
As soon as he thought of Roman asking him to dance and kissing him though, he knew.
Virgil cried for a while that night.
Suddenly after prom, Roman dropped most of his clubs.
“Why’d you stop going?” Patton asked during their current conversation, taking out his lunch. He offered Virgil a cookie who took it reluctantly.
“Eh, I don’t know, I’ve just been so busy you know? Wanted to see if it helped,” Roman offered as explanation, shrugging. “Oh hey Logan, did you finish studying for our APUSH test today?” he added as the aforementioned took a seat at the table, finished with his student council meeting.
Logan nodded and wordlessly handed his notes to Roman with a roll of his eyes. “I knew you were going to ask.”
“You know me well Specs! I swear, he’s really going nuts with AP test prep, huh?” Roman asked, flipping through the neatly written notes.
“Teachers tend to overprepare us for AP tests, I promise it’s worth it.”
Patton sighed and turned to Virgil, letting the other two talk over their test next period. “Hey Virge, do you want to come over to my house today? I got some new paints I wanted to try out but I’ve been waiting for you to come over,” Patton tried, smiling hopefully at him.
He really didn’t have anything better to do that afternoon so he nodded. “Yeah, sure, do you want me to bring anything?”
Patton shook his head. “Nope, just yourself!”
Virgil nodded.
Summer came around and Virgil started to spend less time with Roman. His family had dragged him on more than one trip so luckily he had a good excuse. Roman certainly didn’t seem very available either so it wasn’t exactly hard for their schedules to conflict.
With a week until senior year started, Virgil went to help Patton walk his dog.
“Hey Pat..?”
“Hm?” Patton asked, looking to him with a smile.
“What would you think if I wanted to... I dunno, change my style I guess?” Virgil asked, tugging at the sleeves of his sweater.
“Hmm... Well, what are you thinking about? Like, just a little change? Starting from scratch?” was Patton’s response. “Not for any reason, I’m still supportive no matter what you want to do!”
Virgil thought on it as they continued walking. “I don’t really know yet, I just know I want to change it I guess?”
Patton nodded. “Well I say do it! You can always change it back!”
With that, they moved on to other subjects. Patton was excited about school while Virgil ruminated on Patton’s questions.
The day before senior year started, Virgil knew what he was planning on, staring at the hair dye in his hands.
______________________________
Hey hey hey, we are finally going to be getting into the actual conflict! Gosh, I’ve been waiting for the chance to do so, the next chapter will definitely be interesting!
I will say I had a bit of trouble with this one. The last chapter starts off with the first day of freshman year but I just felt it was a good way to set up the dynamic. I wanted the story to be set in either junior or senior year though mainly due to the maturity level at that point. It feels more comfortable and lets me have more room with what’s to come! I tried to get there without just saying “Look, here’s a time skip, wow!” I really hope I did it well, it feels a little clunky!
I hope you guys liked this chapter and as always, feel free to chat with me in the comments! I love hearing your guys’ opinions!

AP SCORES ARE OUT! And I’m confused.
So, there were some things that happened that I hoped for/expected.
Like 4s on APUSH and AP English Lit. I got those! Hooray! I had hoped to not get a 1 on AP Micro...and I got a 2. Also hooray, I was never going to pass that.
What I didn’t expect were 3s on AP Research and APES.
Technically, it’s a pass, but I don’t get credit for APES at school. Which sucks. I don’t understand. I loved that class, I thought I understood it, but I guess not. It also sucks because now I do have to take a science in college and lab fees make it an extra $115.
I don’t care so much about AP Research because my school doesn’t accept the class for credits at all. But I am confused about why I got a 3. The paper was solid, my presentation went well, and my teacher was hyping us all up and said we would all get at least 4s but I guess not. Then again, she also didn’t like me.
On a happier note, I am going into college with 23 credits already completed, almost a full year’s worth. These credits come from two 5s (AP US GOVT AND AP BIO), and four 4s, (AP ENGLISH LIT, AP ENGLISH LANG, AP WORLD, AND APUSH). I’ve taken a total of 10 APs. AP Capstone did not count for credit anywhere, even though I got 3s on both. And I only failed AP Micro, which I took independently and really expected to fail anyways.
Congrats to everyone on the good scores.
If the scores aren’t exactly what you wanted, remember that it doesn’t define you, so long as you learned something and hopefully enjoyed yourself.

how an idiot like me got into good schools
A quick run-through of my academic history and how I got into good colleges will be below the cut! I’m also including a list of some of the schools I got into for reference. I apologize in advance for how messy this is, but my memory is shitty and I remember random things that I keep throwing in lol. (and for people congratulating me, thank you very much, but I got into all these schools last year lol! so keep in mind I graduated high school in 2019)
If all you came for are the basic stats and you don't want my rambling: I went to a public school GPA: around 4.4 on 4.0 scale (3.9 unweighted) SAT: 1520/1600 APs: 10 (4 3s, 2 4s, 4 5s) Extracurricular: mainly NHS (around 300 volunteering hours), StuCo, Varsity Golf, and Quiz Bowl
EDIT: comments made by the readers who reviewed my application are available here!
First off, I am not an einstein! I am blessed that I pick up on stuff easily and gifted in academics, but I’m nowhere near a genius. For a little backstory, I went to a public school in Michigan for the entirety of my pre-k - 12 education. When I was in the third grade, the district introduced an accelerated program. We took a quasi IQ test and if we tested high enough (I think the threshold was 80%? If I remember correctly I got a 97) we were put in a class that was 2 years ahead in English and Math. We stayed grouped together for the rest of our public schooling, basically a core group of around 20 people. Since we were the first year of the program and our grade was exceptionally gifted for some weird reason, it was a very high achieving group of students, so I’m going to include their stats along with mine for comparison because colleges also factor in your peers when they look at your stats.
I’ll start off with basic stats:
I got a 1520 on the SAT. My grade had around 5 - 10 people achieve over 1500. Some of them had been studying for years, while others (me) did not know that the SAT existed until that year and couldn’t afford any private tutoring and had no patience for the study books from the library. I’m lucky to have an aptitude for the skills they were testing. I did not take any SAT subject tests.
For GPA, I think I ended up with around a 4.4 on a 4.0 scale. I was around 15/350 when it came to class standing, so I was far from the valedictorian. I think our valedictorians got around a 4.6 or 4.7.
I took 10 AP tests. I got a 3 in APUSH, World History, Language and Comp (I fell asleep lol), and Chem (I will get into this class a little later). I got a 4 in Literature (I fell asleep. Again.) and in Psychology. I got a 5 in Calc AB & BC, Comp Sci Principles, and Environmental Science.
AP classes were really pushed in my high school, especially onto my grade, and I don’t like being told what to do lol so I pushed back and took fewer AP classes than most of my peers (valedictorians ended up with maybe 15? It’s crazy) and basically only took classes I was interested in or that I had to take because I had exhausted the rest of the curriculum.
I also dual-enrolled in 2 classes at the local community college since I’d exhausted the curriculum at my high school for things I wanted to do (english and comp sci). I want to make it clear that I never sat down and planned how I was going to maximize my schedule or how I’d take the most advanced classes, I just fell into it since we had already essentially skipped two grades. Most people didn’t dual enroll since they wanted the AP GPA boost.
For extracurriculars, I mainly focused on Quiz Bowl, Golf, NHS (volunteered around 350 hours in 3 years I think) and Student Government. I never had any leadership positions and just kind of fucked around most of the time. Most of my peers held several leadership positions throughout the years and did like a bazillion things. 5 of them even traveled to Europe for some science research thing where they presented their research. I was not that big of a nerd.
In junior year, I stumbled on something called Questbridge and decided to apply because I wanted the money for the scholarship. I became a Questbridge college prep scholar, which then led me to apply for the National College Match. I didn’t rank any binding schools so I didn’t match, but I did apply to several schools with their application. If you are a low-income high achieving student, I highly recommend looking them up. I was the first person in my school to do this program and encouraged my peers to do it too. I think 4 of us were Questbridge scholars.
As you can see, I had good numbers, which probably got me past the first wave of application look throughs. However, I’m fairly confident that what made me stand out was my essays. I always stress this to whoever asks me for advice: do not write a perfect essay, write YOUR essay. I can only imagine how bored those poor people are of reading about someone winning a soccer game or a spelling bee. Add some pizzazz in there. Talk about your flaws and your mistakes and your unique life experiences!
For example, my personal essay wasn’t even in essay format! I wrote it like journal entries, focusing on my sophomore year when my life was Extra Tumultuous and I was going through homelessness. I did not say I was homeless once in the essay. I just did day by day entries of what my life was like during that time and through that the readers were able to see that I loved to read, that I am fiercely protective of my single-parent family, and they saw how I handled adversity. I want to stress that I’m not encouraging poverty porn at all. I did not write it to make the reader feel bad. I simply relayed what I thought about in a day, focusing on both big and small.
I also wrote about funny things related to academics, partly to explain my transcript and partly to be funny. This is the AP Chem thing. I actually dropped out of it after one term (so about a third of the way through) so I could dual enroll in a class I was interested in instead. My chem teacher HATED that since I was good at chemistry (hate it. Hate that subject so much) and tried to convince me to stay. One of the things he said was “You’ll never be ready for college if you don’t take this class! You wouldn’t even be able to pass the AP test!” so I said bet. dropped the class and signed up for the AP test that same day and showed up almost every day for the rest of the year and dicked around the entire class, taking naps in the back of the lab, sitting on his desk, cracking jokes about whatever he was teaching. I got a 3 on that exam purely out of spite with only half the information I needed. So write about stuff like that. It’s fun.
The fact that I had no guidance in writing the essays was actually really good for me since I just kind of let loose. My UChicago essay read like I was on crack, and they loved it so much that they literally mentioned it during the welcome speech for their little college visit in April.
And don’t sweat over the small stuff! The short answers don’t have to be perfect and mind-blowing, just answer honestly. For the “why Yale” supplemental essay I just ranted about how beautiful their library is for a good 300 words (at some point I said I needed my inhaler because it was that breathtaking. I made a Yale admissions officer read that.) I ranted about Howl’s Moving Castle to Columbia. I told them my favorite magazine was the American Girl ones for their arts and crafts! I have a friend at Columbia who literally sent them a picture of her in a duck costume as a supplement. They loved it. So don’t lose your mind trying to sound worldly and educated. You’re like. 17. Just answer honestly and don’t think too hard about it.
I was also extremely lucky to have a dedicated counselor who sat down for hours with each individual student to write fantastic letters of recommendation. She really made it clear what I had achieved and what challenges I’d faced.
So. tl;dr: I got lucky. Unless your parents donated a couple billion to the school, there are no guarantees. Sometimes you can have the stats and perfect essays and amazing extracurriculars and you can still get rejected because they don’t think you’re a good fit with the school compared to the rest of the applicants. There’s limited space in the student body. I got into schools my valedictorians didn’t get into even though I was academically less than them in every possible way. So let yourself shine through your essays and know you’ll end up in an environment that values the person they saw in those essays.
I got into a lot of schools, and don’t really have a record of all of them, but here are some of the top ones I can remember off the top of my head:
Yale, Columbia, University of Chicago (likely letter), Northwestern, University of Michigan, Northeastern, CWRU, UNC Chapel Hill, and a couple other schools here and there that slip my mind at the moment.

Pairing: Reader x Sam
Prompt: Popular guy falling for the nerdy girl
25 Days of Tropes Masterlist
________________
Charlie was in the middle of telling you about what had happened with the weird guy who’d been trying to hit on her in her technology class when she suddenly stopped. Smiling to yourself, you glanced over at her before going back to trying to find your earbuds at the bottom of your backpack.
“What? You forget what happened?” you teased.
“Apparently,” someone who was definitely not Charlie replied. “I was really hoping to find out what happened.”
You jumped in surprise and looked up to find Sam Winchester standing on the other side of you.
“Sorry, I thought you knew I was here. I would’ve said something earlier if I’d known,” he said, smiling sheepishly.
What’s he doing here?
“No, it’s okay…” you said, glancing around. “Did you need something?”
Sam frowned a little, looking around when you did. “I wanted to talk about the project for APUSH?”
You pressed your lips together and nodded tightly. Closing your locker, you slung your bag over your shoulder and looked back at Charlie.
“Tell me later, okay? I’ve gotta go figure out this project,” you told her.
“You didn’t tell me you were partnered with Sam Winchester!” she hissed. “Why didn’t he pick someone else to work with? Isn’t his girlfriend in your class?”
Sighing, you shrugged and glanced back at Sam. “I didn’t think it was important. Now go, I’ll catch up with you after school.”
Charlie gave Sam a long look over your shoulder before leaving, and you held back another sigh before turning back around.
“So… You wanna work in the library?” he asked, shifting a little.
“You heard everything she said, didn’t you?”
“Yeah.” Sam winced. “For what it’s worth, Jo’s not my girlfriend. We just grew up together.”
“Didn’t you guys go to homecoming together?” you asked.
“No, that was Jessica. She was— We’re not together anymore.” Sam cleared his throat and gave you a tight smile. “Library?”
You nodded and let Sam lead the way. It seemed like everyone you passed said ‘hi’ to him. A few smiled at you as well, so you smiled back, unsure of what to do. You didn’t have a ton of friends at this school besides Charlie—you’d only been going here for a year.
After you and Sam had found a table, he pulled out his phone and held it out to you. “We should exchange numbers so that we can talk about it after school or figure out times to work on it.”
“So why aren’t you working with Jo?” you asked, taking the phone and handing him your own.
Sam paused, staring at you. “Do you not want to work with me or something, Y/N?”
“That’s not what I meant,” you sighed. Rubbing a hand over your face, you looked back at him, his phone still in your hand. “I’m just trying to figure out why you’re not partners with Jo if you’re such good friends. You and I have never even had a conversation before.”
Shrugging, Sam finished typing in his number and slid your phone back across the table. You did the same, slipping it into your back pocket.
“I don’t know. You seemed like a nice person and I don’t know you that well. This seemed like a good reason to get to talk to you?” he said.
You gawked a little at that but quickly tried to cover it up. Sam wanted to talk to you? You were nobody here, just some girl in AP classes and the honor society.
“So,” Sam said, pulling a notebook from his backpack, “you wanna pick a topic? I was thinking we could do it on The New Deal. I talked to a bunch of other people and no one said they were doing it.”
He looked up at you, notebook open and pen in hand. Quickly, you scrambled to get your own stuff out, your mind still trying to piece together the puzzle that was Sam Winchester.
“Yeah. Yeah, uh, The New Deal.”
Sam frowned. “You okay? We could work another time if you want...”
“I’m fine, Sam. Let’s just work on this project, okay?”
______________
Charlie was in the middle of telling you about what had happened with the weird guy who was still trying to hit on her in her technology class when she suddenly stopped. Smiling to yourself, you glanced over at her before going back to trying to find your earbuds at the bottom of your backpack.
“Hey, Sam,” you said, not looking away from what you were doing.
A hand pushed the door of your locker out of the way and Sam appeared on your other side, grinning.
“Hey, cutie.”
You rolled your eyes, but you couldn’t deny the fact that his compliments always made you feel giddy. “What did we say about the nicknames at school?” you asked.
“I’ll leave you two alone. See you after physics, Y/N!” Charlie called, already walking away.
After giving her a quick wave, you turned to look at Sam, who was already staring at you. “What?”
“Nothing,” he answered, still grinning. “Just think you're cute.”
You groaned and tried to hide your smile as you grabbed your water bottle, shooing him away from your locker door so you could close it. “You’re being shmoopy again, Sam.”
Sam laughed and wrapped his arm around your shoulders, pulling you a little more into his side as the two of you walked to your class. Some of his friends waved as you passed and you waved back, smiling.
“Did you really just use the word shmoop?” Sam asked, tilting his head to smile at you.
“Shut up,” you laughed. You gave him a little shove and he smiled even wider. “Stop it!”
“Do you not like me complimenting you? I’ll stop if you really want me to. Scout’s honor.”
Blushing slightly, you shook your head. “You’ve never been a Boy Scout, Sam.”
“Well, Dean was. It counts.” Sam stopped walking and pulled you into an empty space in front of the debate team’s trophy case. “Seriously, though. Do you want me to stop?”
“Sam, no, it’s okay. I promise. I just… I’m not used to it, you know?” You looped your arms around Sam’s neck, letting him pull you into his arms. “I promise I’m okay.”
He smiled and leaned down to peck you on the lips. “Okay,” he said, his voice quiet despite the noise in the hallway. “Think we should get to class?”’
“As fun as this is… We’ve got a test today,” you told him, smiling softly when he slipped his hands into the back pockets of your jeans. “Sam, c’mon. We gotta go.”
He let out a little groan, then pulled away a second later. “Alright, alright. Time for class, but only because I know that we’ll get to spend less time studying for the next test if we do well on this one.”
“That’s not how this works,” you laughed. Stepping away, you took his hand and led him down the hall. “But maybe I’ll make an exception for you.”

My Exam Score: 5
Let me preface all of this by saying that my perspective on this course is coming from someone who is very much a humanities person and who had already taken an AP History (World) before taking this course. That said, let’s begin.
So, unlike AP World, APUSH requires you to know a lot of very specific details about history; among the things that you might need to know, for example, are the year the cotton gin was invented, and by whom, (1791; Eli Whitney), what president and party passed the Alien & Sedition Acts (Adams; Federalist), what caused a split between suffragettes and abolitionists (the 15th Amendment), so on and so forth. This was definitely the part of this course that was the hardest for me. I already had experience with the historical thinking skills thanks to World and I feel I’m pretty good at thinking in the big picture of the themes of APUSH (again, similar to World, though APUSH has many more themes than World did), but learning all of the very specific details was difficult.
All of that said, my biggest tip for anyone in APUSH is, as my teacher would lovingly yell at us during class, know your content. If you don’t take the time to learn the facts of history (like those mentioned previously), you will struggle through connecting historical periods or historical themes, and that is truly the crux of APUSH (and AP history in general).
Aside from just memorizing facts, though, the best thing you can do to prepare yourself for the exam is to practice reading and analyzing historical sources (for APUSH these won’t be any older than the 15th century, but a bulk of what you see will be post-revolution). Understanding historical documents is necessary for the multiple choice, the short answer questions, and the DBQ (especially the DBQ). The best way to practice would be to either find a quizlet or something with a list of documents and their meanings or through the official College Board scoring guidelines for the exams--every year there is a detailed breakdown of every document from the year’s DBQ, thought I don’t think this will hold true for the 2020 exams.
Further, I will always preach that reading the Chief Reader Reports from exams will do wonders for your score; in the report there is a breakdown of knowledge gaps for nearly every period featured on the exam. With this, I recommend reading the breakdown of each FRQ and the example FRQs given. All of this can be found on the AP Central website.
I would also recommend using Fiveable, a platform made for AP studying; Quizlet (just search for APUSH and a multitude of options for studying will come up); Khan Academy; and Albert.io, which is a paid program that I used for World (Not, APUSH) that is definitely worth it if you can afford it (or maybe ask your teacher/school about getting it for the school--that’s how I used it for World!).
Really, APUSH comes down to your memory, your ability to connect ideas together, and your ability to articulate both of those skills in writing. A good practice would be to take major events/people/ideas from the course and sort them into the various themes that are presented in APUSH, and maybe even try to connect them using historical thinking skills as well.
That’s all I have to say! If you have any questions about APUSH/AP History/AP Classes & Exams in general feel free to ask me!
(Though I will be making similar posts for English Language & Composition and Biology so)
Much love & Good Luck in APUSH!

to twenty year old me:
i hope you're happy. i'm putting off doing apush work and i wanted to talk to you because i was thinking about the future, and the thought of you came up. i hope you still cook as much as you loved to at my age. call your mom. she loves you more than anything. i hope you've figured out what you want to be, but if not that's okay. you still have time. right now i'm thinking about biomedical engineering, but that will probably change. soccer just started up again. i'm excited i think. i hope you're doing well, and taking care of yourself. i hope you're putting yourself first, but still being kind. i hope you see some funny memes today. are memes still a thing? they better be. life isn't turning out how i thought it would. i'm okay with that i think. if things aren't working out how you thought they would, that's okay. we'll get there eventually. did you ever learn how to juggle lemons? i have this weird fantasy of being at a dinner party and casually juggling some lemons, so hopefully you've been practicing. speaking of dinner parties, if you haven't started throwing them, you better. get together with your friends. i bet they miss you. how was senior year? graduation? what college did you pick??? did you pick one at all??? i hope you've traveled. don't lose your drive to see the world. there is so much out there. i don't know why i'm writing this, but it has helped. i'm not ready to be you yet, i don't think. i don't worry about money or mortgage. i think i want to be out on my own sometimes, but right now, i'm trying to appreciate where i am. spend time with my family. appreciate what little is left of my childhood. time has been passing more and more quickly. i don't know how that makes me feel. it's weird, i think. don't let time get away from you though. keep doing things. rebuild the robot from icarly. cut your hair. see your friends. do something nice. make a difference. i hope you are well. eat a vegetable every now and then. drink more water. remember me. as time goes on this me will fade. we are not the same person anymore, i don't think. remember when you were me. remember that i support you, and i want you to be happy. i want to be happy in the future. the next few years will change me. maybe for the better. hopefully for the better. this me is good though. remember who you are, who you were. be kind. be honest. apologize when you do something wrong, and stop shoving your feeling in a god damn box. you don't have to be like dean winchester. take it from me. tell people how you feel, and don't apologize. do, however, eat a slice of pie on his behalf. we're gonna be okay, i think. i'll see you in a couple years i guess. i love you. cara reece. december 1, 2016
