Day 13: Looking at Athena from the Top of the World We met up at the bus at 7am today to get over to the airport for our flight out of the hellhole that was Rome in order to go to the glorious city of Athens. Our flight was supposed to be at 10am, but it ended up being pushed back to 11am, so we had to sit on the floor of the airport for an hour before they let us check in our baggage (which is an absolutely stupid rule and process)--during which I took the time to write yesterday's post. The flight was only an hour and a half, and Baylee and I ended up getting a row with an empty seat between us (SCORE). The Greek airline outfits are super cute as hell, they gave us hard candies before take-off (cherry--yum!), and they ended served an inflight meal (except that I slept through them giving it to our row), which would be unheard of in the states for that short of a flight. We took a bus into the city and checked into our glorious hotel. Arguably one of the best hotels I've ever been in, The President Hotel was absolutely phenomenal compared to our last hellhole of a place. Sure, there actually isn't wifi anywhere other than the lobby (and the wifi there sucks), but that's chump-change compared to how large, gorgeous, and comfy the rooms are. AND NO BUGS! YES! We had a couple hours to unwind here and then we met up to go downtown, learn the metro, and do our walking tour of the Acropolis! Unfortunately, we are further from the metro stop than we were at our last hotel, so it was a bit of a hike. Then we did another hike to the Acropolis. Dear lord, it was so hot out. I kept trying to drink water, but it wasn't really helping, and my legs kept whispering to me to just lay down and take a nap. On the way, we saw the changing of the guard in front of the Parliament building where they were guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Solider, which is dedicated to all of the soldiers who were missing in action or died in combat without a proper grave. We also saw ruins of an Ancient Greek bath that the city uncovered while digging new lines for the metro (there are plenty of these all around the city which was cool!). We also saw the remaining few columns from the Temple of Zeus from the 6th century BC, and Haydrian's Arch, which the Athenian's built to thank him for finishing the Temple of Zeus after he took over power in Athens. Finally we made it up to the Acropolis! The back side of the Parthenon was all under construction, but the entire thing was just so absolutely stunning. I can't even say this enough: STUNNING. Our guide talked about how before the current Parthenon, they had two others--one of wood and one of limestone, both of which were destroyed. She also explained how it's built to be an optical illusion. The architects wanted it to look like an absolute rectangle, so they had to make the columns slightly angled (would complete a shape of a pyramid a mile and a half or so from the surface) and they also started smaller, got wider, and then got thinner again. The original Parthenon was constructed with three rooms. The first one was the entrance. The second or middle room housed the statue of Athena (40 feet tall!) which was constructed from gold and ivory with a wooden core. She held a statue of Nike the height of a person in her hand. The back room was basically used as a treasury to hold relics between festivals. I didn't want to leave. I could have stood up there for days. Unfortunately, it closed at 8, so we started getting shuffled away around 7:40pm. Fortunately, we saw a bunch of protected cat colonies on the way back into town for our dinner. Seriously, I loved this. They had them in Italy too. They tended to be fenced off areas (weirdly, most were around national monuments) that had water dishes, shelter, and just tons and tons of cats. SO. FREAKING. CUTE. We even saw a cat walking around on the Parthenon!! We walked down into town and down a street to one of Alexandra's favorite gyro places. She was friends with the manager (which is probably why we went there), and said she would cover our first wrap, which was exciting. I ordered the pork gyro and when it came, it was pork, yogurt, taziki sauce (uhmmm... I don't know how to spell that, my bad), French fries, onion, and tomato in this delicious pita wrap. Honestly, if I hadn't been so starving, I would have picked out half of the stuff (as I announced to the table that I would), but I ate the entire thing. Seriously. Until maybe the last inch, and then I was so full that I dumped out the rest of the contents and just ate the pita (because never waste a pita, am I right!). And the best part about it? The entire thing just cost me the 1.60 euro I owed for the Coke I ordered. Hell yes! (Though I'm convinced the meal actually came out of the original cost of the trip instead of just from her.) After dinner, we all took the metro back to the hotel and Alexandra told us our agenda for the next day (aka a free day except for our 8pm Greek Night Dinner!!), and then a group of us ran over to the bakery across the street from the hotel. And hot damn. That was some good stuff. It was pretty late at night and they were going strong. They had a plethora of bakery treats, like cakes and cookies and mousse and ice cream. I bought a cherry cheesecake cup and a small chocolate-looking individual cake--both of which only cost like 2 euro a piece. We had a small fridge in the room, so I ate my cheesecake (DELICIOUS!!!) and put the cake in the fridge for tomorrow. It wasn't as late of a night as it could have been, which was nice, and I spent some time reading after we switched the lights off, with the lovely dream of knowing we got to sleep-in in the morning. ❤ And then exploration!!
