Any tips on managing money/taxes for teens? No one ever seems to explain it in detail

Absolutely, so I’m going to separate this into two categories; the first being managing money and the second being managing taxes. Additionally, I want to make it clear that I am making the assumption that you are wanting tips for the average teenager facing typical financial/tax situations. Lastly, because one of my colleagues recently got sued about some advice he randomly commented on Facebook, I must make this legal disclaimer:

The information that I am providing is general guidance on matters of interest only. The application and impact of laws can vary widely based on the specific facts involved. Given the changing nature of laws, rules and regulations, there may be inaccuracies in information communicated. Managing Money

So at my former job when I was in university, I worked at a non-profit organization in a department that focused on aiding individuals with low income or poverty seeking assistance with employment and their general livelihood. One of my fundamental first procedures that I would work with them to do is take inventory of their financials and although it may seem simple, you would be surprised how many people fail to do this or how many people don’t do this and it is the underlying reason why they fail in managing their money. What this essentially means is that you need to figure out every single transaction that causes money to come in and causes money to go out. After you have identified every single transaction, (i.e. all financial activity), you are ready to make a budget, which not only includes every transaction, but it should also include any perceived expected transaction.

Now how do you make a budget you ask?

It’s fairly simple:

You start with your expected money coming in (i.e. your income), but here’s a small trick where most people fail. You make sure to put your post-taxed expected money coming in, which you can generally do by googling one of the many post-tax calculators available on the internet and answering a few basic questions (current salary/wage, state, # of dependents, etc.) for it to project your post-tax income. Next, you need to categorize any transactions in your inventory or expected transactions to cause money to go out into two categories:

They are mandatory, there is no way around it. You must pay these things. These include things like; rent, food, water, minimum debt payments, utilities, phone bill, insurance, etc. This is what most people consider their living costs.

They are discretionary and you have the opportunity to not pay them, but you still expect that you will choose/want to pay them, therefore money will be going out. These include things like; going out to dinner, new electronics, new recreational items, paying above minimum payments on debt, saving your money, new clothes, etc.

Now that you have all of your money going out categorized, you need to subtract all of the mandatory expenses (transactions going out) FIRST from your post-taxed money going out. Boom! We are officially at the point where you actually get to make decisions with the managing of your money, but there is no “right” way, there is merely differences with varying subjective consequences/benefits and risk levels.

If you want to save money, live with your parents as long as you can. Seriously! But there comes a time when you want to / have to leave, and you'll need to rent a place. Landlords will want to see that you have income, so try to keep payments below 30% of your take home pay. You may need a co-signer if you have minimal credit history. You'll need first month's rent and a security deposit up front, and even utility deposits sometimes. Read your lease before you sign it, and know your rights and responsibilities as a tenant, and what organizations can help you if you encounter issues.

Roommates are a popular way to save money on rent. Be aware of the issues that can come up with roommates though, since circumstances change, and you may be on the hook for their share. Have all roommates on the lease. You might even want a roommate agreement. Perhaps Sheldon Cooper has it right after all? Alternatively, consider renting a room from someone who owns their own house.

Aside from rent, cars are the biggest expenditure for many teenagers You can save a lot of money if you don't need to pay for one! It's not just the purchase cost. There's gas, repairs, and especially car insurance, which is very expensive for teenagers, typically at least $100/month, and can even be $200/month in some places, or if you have a tickets / accidents.

Your best bet if you do need a car is to save up $5000 or so for a reliable used car, then pay cash, so you can avoid finance charges and make your own insurance choices. If you do need to finance a car, be very careful of financing offers for teenagers. Double-digit interest rates are a Bad Thing. You do not want to "build credit" that way! The loan and the car are different things. You can't give back the car and be done with the loan, since you will typically be "underwater" and owe more than the car is worth.

Choose your spending wisely. Money spent is unavailable for anything else. Make sure it was your highest priority use of that money.

What I advise is that until you feel comfortable taking risks with your money you follow this flowchart (see link):

Next, I just want to go into the fact that although you absolutely have the most “control” over your expenses portion of your budget. The income section should still absolutely be part of your consideration because there will come a point that you can’t reduce your expenses anymore or you don’t want to reduce your expenses anymore.

You may find yourself working part-time or even full-time. This is a good time to learn about your rights and responsibilities as an employee, including how you are paid and taxed, as well as what your employer can legally do with your hours and even when you can be let go. Fortunately, taxes are low for most teenagers (if only because their income is low...), and you may even get a refund if you file taxes! While your lifetime income is the single biggest determinant in your personal finance situation, at this age, your priority is not on current income as much as preparing for the future, thus the focus on education.

Now let’s get into something that a lot of my followers will probably disagree with me about but...(FYI I copied some of the below from another post that I made on here, but several of the links from that post don’t work anymore, so I am removing them)

If you are currently attending high school or you recently graduated high school, then you should definitely be considering on attending college or working towards some type of certification as it is statistically proven that generally college graduates have a greater net income than non-college graduates. Though just to be clear, this is not 100% true in every case nor does it mean that all non-college graduates are unsuccessful, there are plenty of wealthy and/or successful non-college graduates, but if you took a random sample of 100 college graduates and compared them to 100 non-college graduates, then you would find the college graduates’ net income was greater (even after student loan payments).

So assuming you are attending a college; for the most cost-effective education, you will almost never go wrong with community colleges as they typically have very low fees compared to traditional universities and/or private colleges, despite commonly being transferred over to those same schools (verify before deciding). At the very least, if you try college and it doesn’t fit for you, then look into two-year degrees, so you can get out quicker. If you really do not want to attend a community college though, then you should really consider going to a four-year state school, but under zero circumstances should you go to a for-profit college as they are expensive, generally not well-respected, and credits are very difficult to transfer to an accredited four-year college. As a note, let me clarify by saying that “for profit” is not the same as “private” because there are some good non-profit private schools (though they are still typically expensive).

Ultimately though, make sure when you are selecting the college you choose that is accredited and has the following listed on their website:

Average starting salary of graduates in their chosen field

Percent of graduates that receive a job in their chosen field within the first 6 months

A great career center that will continually help you find jobs, along with a successful career fair

If you need money to continue your education, learn about student loans. This is a complicated topic with many options. Be careful what you do here, since these loans will be yours / your parents until they are paid off! People who find themselves in trouble later usually took out bigger loans (~$100,000) vs. smaller loans (~$20,000). Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid by the end of June 30 of the year you plan to go to college so that you'll be eligible for grants and federally subsidized student loans. If you aren't quite ready for college, you can use FAFSA to estimate federal grants and loan approvals. Avoid taking on loans that exceed the future earning potential of the degree by too large of a factor. Use the debt/salary wizard on their website to determine the suggested maximum amount of debt you should incur based upon your projected salary or what salary you should be earning based upon your current debt.

Some people consider military enlistment or ROTC as a way to pay for college. That's a valid approach, but it is a big commitment. Talk to some people in the military or veterans other than your recruiter before you commit. Also note that dropping out of ROTC can be very expensive so you should probably not enter ROTC if you have any potential medical or mental health issues.

Ultimately, the point to be made is that you really need to have a plan for your education.

You ideally wouldn't go out and buy a car without doing a bit of research on what existing owners of that make and model had to say. Why would you get into five (or even six!) figures of debt without doing a similar amount of research? If you're at all on the fence about going to college, or your chosen major, it makes sense to find someone who's gone through your prospective degree program, take them to lunch, and get their feedback on how their path has treated them.

Did their degree path make sense for them?

If they could do it again, would they?

What advice would they have for someone considering following in their shoes?

Once you've done this, it would behoove you to gather additional data points. Don't just cherry-pick someone who's become a breakout success. Try to talk to people in the middle of the pack, or even some folks who went through the program and failed. Consider fallback options as well. If your career plan requires certain things that may not come to pass (such as being accepted into a top ten law school), and your plans are forced to change, what are your options? An undergraduate degree in business or engineering at that point may bear more fruit than a bachelor's in philosophy.

Think about your career

If you're headed to college, think long and hard about getting a degree that won't pay for itself. For any career, you should talk to several people who work in the field about your education plans and that career path to make sure your plan makes sense.

Next, I kinda want to return to more of the financial side of money management and that is banking...

Generally, if you're a minor, you will need to open a joint account with a parent or guardian. Note that joint bank accounts can be emptied by either account holder at any time so it is strongly recommended you open your own account after you turn 18. When you turn 18 (19 in Alabama), it's definitely time to get a bank account in your own own name (and transition away from joint accounts with your parents). You will no-monthly-fee checking account and a savings account. Credit unions, online banks, and small banks tend to have better customer service than large banks.You're not going to get rich off interest, sorry! But you can find better savings interest rates at online-only banks and credit unions. Put away savings as soon as you can, it's a good habit to get into, and start your emergency fund. Investments and retirement savings are covered more in the next several age-range articles. With limited or part-time income, savings are a better bet for now.

While we are on the subject of banking, we should probably also talk about credit to conclude...

Student loans and credit cards are the typical sources of building credit for most teenagers (18-19), but it's also when a lot of people start a long relationship with expensive debt. If you are responsible with money and have income, applying for a credit card can be a reasonable move for many people. This is different than the debit card your bank will provide with your account. It's a very good way to independently establish credit without paying interest. A secured or student card is probably your best option. Pay the balance in full every month! If you can't do that or you're not sure if you are ready, then you should not get a credit card. You can always build credit later when you have a more steady income and more experience handling money.

Managing Taxes

First and foremost, most teenagers are going to have minimal deductions, a low tax liability, and in most cases will qualify for a free file return.

To file a free return though, you should go here (see link), which has numerous free options for filing depending on your circumstances and many of which will hold your hand throughout the entire process.

As for how to best manage your taxes, you need to make sure that you keep documentation (receipts/evidence) for any number that goes on your taxes because if for the off chance you get audited and you are unable to provide supporting documentation, you will be fined or at worst charged with tax evasion. Furthermore, be aware that any document that someone gives you, most likely indicates that they are reporting those numbers based on you, therefore do not try to “lose documentation” to avoid paying taxes as that is not a valid excuse.

Additionally, it is fairly common for 18 year olds to try to classify themselves as a non-dependent when they are being classified by their parents and no it is not a personal choice. There are two types of dependent classifications; child dependent and qualifying relative dependent.

Generally, for teens to determine whether they can claim themselves, they just need to figure out how much of their support (costs) are covered by them vs the parent. If their parent pays most of their support (if you live with them, then they are supporting you via rent fyi), then the parent generally is able to claim them. There are other tests, but generally the support

Another common challenge is for teen parents who aren’t married having a child, but breaking up, then having a custody battle and both trying to claim the child on their taxes. Well it can get pretty dirty, but the same rules above apply to figure out who has the higher authority to claim, which is a major reason you better have documentation if you are trying to prove you are entitled to claim the child.

Finding Out/ Jake ft Eden

Jake:

hooking his thumbs beneath the straps of his backpack, he wiggles just enough to redistribute the weight in it as he let out a hefty sigh. the party from the night before had been wild, and he was lucky to have snuck out in the early hours to catch at least a little rest. before trying to make it over to the coffee shop before his date with addi to get some writing done. crossing the street at the light, its only then that he sees eden. in the same clothes from the party the night before. he's not entirely certain who's place it was, but his heart seems to drop and crack in the pit of his stomach. he freezes, and only steps forward when he's honked at. visibly shaken, he jogs the rest of the way across the street and tries to calm an aching chest. "stupidstupidstupid." he rasps under his breath, knowing he's being unfair by the feeling of jealousy combined with absolute heartache he feels in the confines of his bones.

Eden:

her head is throbbing, and she makes a stop to pick up coffee from the local cafe, hoping that it might somehow help the dull ache in her head. she doesn't see jake until she hears the honk of a car, and her attention is quickly drawn to his direction. she was acting just like him, she knew it, she was stumbling out of the beds of strangers just as jake used to, and she wasn't being subtle about it either. "morning!" she calls, waving over at him casually.

Jake:

hearing her voice, meant that there was absolutely no way out of this impossibly uncomfortable scenario, which only further sent his heart directly into his stomach, only stopping to crumble and break off as it haphazardly hit various inners on the spiral down. a knot forms in his throat, and he quickly clenches his jaw in an effort to not show an ounce of emotion across his features. "hey - i..." he brushes his hand through the air to acknowledge her before he glances around, realizing he would have to walk right by her to get to his chosen spot. letting out a shaky breath, he pushed forward, and avoided eye contact entirely, truly afraid of the minor details that would prove how she had been spending her time. "just.... coffee shop.... gonna.. try to write." his voice cracks, keeping his head down.

Eden:

he's being awkward, and eden is suddenly a little regretful, wishing she hadn't drawn attention to herself, or said hi. is he okay? she's too scared to ask. "oh right, yeah -- okay." he's avoiding her, right? but eden really thought they were doing good, that they were on their way to becoming friends. "i was just on my way there, too."

Jake:

"nice, yeah.... cool." he clears his throat as his eyes stay put on the sidewalk below, suddenly very aware of her proximity and instantly envisioning hands all over the frame that he had once claimed as his own. his eyes lifted for just a moment, and he caught sight of a darkened mark on her neck, and let out a defeated sigh. "cold whisk. kitchen whisk. it'll...." he nodded with his head. "used to have to before i went to work after..." nights with you.

Eden:

she's confused, not sure what it is he is talking about, but then she realises he's talking about her neck and eden claps her hand over the mark with a bright pink flush rising to her cheeks. "oh i - yeah, i'll give that a try when i get home."

Jake:

“sure thing. hope it was nice, at least.” offering the smallest smile in her direction, and an ounce of bite - he nods before he’s turning to heard towards the cafe in question. his heart aches - as if it’s already in pieces and the organ pumping his blood of a foreign object. his fingers grip tightly at the straps of his bag as he lets out a bough that feels strangled.

Eden:

was jake really telling her that he hoped her sex life was good? she clears her throat, feeling a little awkward as they stand there, not really knowing what to say to one another. she decides not to react to the comment, for it will simply do neither of them any good. "i was just gonna get a coffee to you, are you...staying here?"

Jake:

“no i... sorry.” he clears his throat and nearly stumbles as he starts he’s feet up once more. he knows it’s unfair. he knows that he no longer holds claim to anything about eden, which meant that she was essentially a free agent - but, the way it consumed him nearly completely, left him throbbing. the walk felt awkward - which wasn’t them. had never been them, but his mind kept alternating between their last kiss - and... well, her most recent activities. there’s so much he has to say, but nothing comes out. stepping up to the counter, her order tumbled from between his lips right after his own before he has a moment to stop it.

Eden:

she stiffens when he puts in her order, he's being kind, and it ruins her every time. there's something about it that makes her nervous, because will every ever get to be friends? she wishes they could - she wants to be able to take care of him, he deserves that. but does she deserve to hurt again? "i'll get these." she says quickly, adding jake's order to the list before she's handing her card over to pay.

Jake:

the second she’s holding her card out, he’s simply shaking his head and sliding a fistful of cash to the barista. “here - keep the change. thank you.” he hums, taking her card only to carefully slide it into her back pocket. dark eyes search the space before he finds a table, and drops his stuff onto it. he hates it. he hates that he can’t be close to her and not touch her - because he’s desperate, and needy - and he’s never wanted anything more than her.

Eden:

she sighs, sad that jake rejects her attempts to pay, feeling a little depleted as she pushes her card back into her pocket. "is it always going to be like this between us?"

Jake:

it feels like a loaded question as he nods towards the seat across from him. letting out a hefty sigh, his fingers throw themselves through his curls. “it’s just... a little shocking, seeing you out - in last nights clothes and a hickey. just...” he shrugs, not fully prepared to explain that it hurts him.

Eden:

it feels unfair, why does jake get to do all those things and she doesn't? why did he get the double standard? "i'm just having fun - jake - for once in my life i'm just, doing what i want to do." she sighs, "all i've done my whole life is live for everyone else."

Jake:

it falls on his chest like a heavy weight when she speaks. “i-“ he starts, but hears his name. excusing himself, he collects their drinks and deposits them back on the table before glancing up at her again. “i’m not judging you - or telling you what you’re doing is wrong. i...” he sighs, picking at the cup. “i just don’t like it. and i’m not... saying that, that’s fair either..”March 24, 2021

Eden:

"i didn't like it when you told me you loved me and 3 hours later you were fucking some other bitch." she stares at him, hard, her throat tight. does he not see? does he have no idea what he's done to her, the pain he's caused. all the self doubt, the way she hated other women, when women weren't the problem or the enemy. "i hated all of it, i tore myself up because of it. and i'm so fucking sorry, that i have to look for validation in everyone else who isn't you.”

Jake:

the words seem to seep into him in a way that he can't really explain, but he knows that it rocks him to his very core in an instant. he could feel eyes on him immediately - people that overheard her, instantly looking at him. "i didn't... i-" his brows furrowed as his stomach turned, eyes flickering across the space as he tries to put his thoughts into some sort of cohesive statement. "i'm not saying that you're wrong. you are free to do, see, or fuck - whomever you want, eden. i... you aren't my girlfriend anymore. right? you aren't.... you're not mine. and i have to live with that. i'm just saying that you might send the wrong message when you're kissing me, and then fucking someone else - but again, not really any of my business who you fuck. but, i'm super appreciative of the fact that everyone in this god damn coffee shop knows that i'm an asshole. thank you." he huffs, tossing his bag onto his shoulders once more, brushing by her.

Eden:

she stares at jake's back as he pushes by her, and she knows she's confused him by kissing him, she did wrong. but hadn't he? all the times he swore he'd be better, do better, and he didn't. tears burn in her eyes, and she can feel everyone looking at her, at jake, at them, at the mess they had created. she doesn't chase after him, she knows she can't, she doesn't want to cause more of a scene. instead she just clutches her coffee and makes off in the opposite direction, allowing the tears to burn in her eyes.

Jake:

his fingers roughly tangle in wild curls as he makes his way down winding roads. he had only wanted to write - having felt moderately inspired to do so as of late, but his mood was completely shot. note to self: a whole new percentage of the population now hates you. it wasn't that it wasn't deserved, jake was well aware that the errors and careless actions he had taken with eden, had earned him the right to be judged. but, god - did he love her. making his way back into his apartment, he tossed a wave in koda's direction to let him know he was back, before falling back on his bed and pulling the small stuffed animal to his chest as his free hand toyed with the threads from the hold in his jeans.

I wish I could even begin to articulate how difficult things are in my life right now. I’ve admitted to depression in previous posts but that’s barely a fraction of the picture. In mid-December I lost my just-barely-sustaining-me job because my boss closed her bodywork practice, and if you live anywhere with seasonal traffic, you know that the off-season is the worst possible time to find work, especially if you’re in a tourism-fueled industry. I was able to cobble together two days a week each at two different places (a spa and a yoga studio) but traffic is still painfully slow and no matter what the law says, no one wants to pay their therapists if there aren’t clients coming in. I’ve been creeping by on about $250 a week at a time of year when it costs $300-400 a month to heat an apartment to 60 degrees. (That’s the lowest possible temp at which I don’t have to keep Lucky in a sweater. :/ I can’t begin to comprehend why propane is so inefficient.) Thankfully I have a roommate (and a good one) to help offset utilities, but unfortunately, I’m dealing with a lot more than that.

There was a glitch with the direct deposit at my second job and I only just received all my wages for the month of January, which will significantly help out for the moment, but that money would have been awfully nice to have for groceries (and heat bills) in January. I’m not starving by any means, but I’m truly living week-to-week and I can physically tell that I’m not getting enough protein (because meat is expensive, even for a bargain shopper).

Right after Christmas I had a terrifying episode of chest pain and wound up in the emergency room at 1am. (I don’t go to the hospital for anything, so that should tell you what a desperate situation this was.) The hospital experience was terrible to say the least, and about three weeks later I got a bill for $1,343 (and a subsequent smaller one for my chest x-ray), because my Obamacare policy covered nothing. (Let that sink in, okay? They “adjusted” the fee but covered no part. Of an ER visit - in-network, no less! - which is the end-all reason everyone tells you that you need health insurance.) I applied for financial assistance right away, which required exhaustive paperwork, only to be informed that they need my 2017 tax return (this was before I’d even received my W-2s) or they would automatically reject my application. Which means I now have to come up with a couple hundred dollars to have my taxes done in order to - wait for it - qualify for a payment plan. It’s pretty clear that I’m not going to receive any assistance or bill forgiveness (if your income isn’t below a particular number - and ironically, my 2016 income was - it’s an automatic rejection), but they won’t even let you have a payment plan (for a $1,343 bill) unless you send them gobs of paperwork demonstrating sufficient financial need.

Lucky’s separation anxiety is relentless and responding to nothing, and I spent the month of January making weekly 90-minute round trips to a veterinary acupuncturist, to the tune of $400+ (maxing out my credit cards in the hope that finally, this would help). Lucky hated the treatments (and I hated myself for putting her through them), her anxiety only got worse and the day before my birthday, the downstairs neighbors left a note implying that if I don’t put her in daycare (which is a whole other mess of a subject), they’ll report us to the landlord.

That night was the lowest I think I’ve ever come in my life. Thankfully, my sister must have picked up on this somehow because she called to chat for a little, but it was the first time I actually looked up the contact info for Lifeline (didn’t call but looked it up), and when my poor roommate finally got home I broke down in ugly tears and told her about something bad that happened to me a long time ago that I’ve never told anyone.

Right now I’m...coping. I guess that’s the only word for it. I’m eating, bathing, dressing, going to work, going outside, etc - and most importantly, taking care of Lucky, who is my literal lifeline. I’ve found one last vet to try and we’re going in tomorrow for a consult, but my roommate is dubious about the chances of success and concerned that the neighbors will flip that I’m not putting Lucky straight into a kennel this week. But right now the future boils down to two equally awful prospects:

1) I get Lucky vaccinated for bordetella and board her at the safest place I can find, to the tune of $20-30 a day (plus round-trip drives of about 30-40 mins twice a day), and try to function at work. There’s no way I can afford those rates, of course, and most of these places only take cash, so I’ll have to get another credit card to pay for living expenses while my wages go to daycare. Or I could look into getting a third job, but that would mean another day or two of daycare to pay for, so I wouldn’t be getting ahead, I’d be exhausted out of my mind, and I’d never see my little girl, who is not a young dog anymore.

2) I move permanently back to Nebraska (in stages, because there’s no way I can afford a U-Haul anytime soon) and continue to pay my half of rent and utilities as long as my roommate wants to stay here. (That was our arrangement last winter and remains the only fair thing to do, really, especially as subletting is forbidden.) My sister would take me in at her tiny house and probably let me stay rent-free, but now my aging father is back in Nebraska, and while my sister and I would buffer each other as much as possible, we’d be expected (read: pressured) to serve as caregivers to some extent, especially me, because I’m a massage therapist. And there aren’t a lot of resources to help you deal with an elderly narcissist. (Fun example: Dad ranted to my sister that he didn’t know why I moved to Maine right before he returned to Nebraska because, and I quote, “She only went to massage school so she could take care of me!” He also lamented to a friend - in front of my sister - that he’s not going to get any more grandchildren because my still-unmarried sister is about to turn 40. Which is a horrible thing to say in and of itself, but I don’t think it even occurred to him in the moment that his youngest child doesn’t have a reproductive system anymore and that the loss of it made her want to die.) Someday I might tell you about the rift with my parents, if I haven’t already - it’s not the aforementioned bad thing from my childhood, but it effectively means that I don’t have parents anymore, not in any kind of supportive sense.

Anyway, I’m scared and weary and hopeless and I hate the assumption that when someone isn’t engaging through social media or responding to messages that they’re self-centered, snooty, having too much fun to bother, etc. My life began to crumble four years ago and has continued at a relentless snowball-roll ever since without getting minutely better or even letting up a little, and I can’t swim a lick so I don’t know how I’m supposed to keep treading water indefinitely. And I don’t want to talk about it because even the nicest of those conversations start with “Are things getting any better?” and the answer is always, ALWAYS, “No.”

I don’t expect sympathy or support, because four years of relentless crap have taught me that the worse your life gets, the less people care. It becomes part of your identity to them (”Well, sounds like Elisabeth’s having some trouble again...”) and, I suspect, starts to paint you as a person who just can’t figure it out/get on in the real world, not someone who’s being subjected to an inordinate amount of bad fortune. I’ve had to fight tooth and nail just to survive these past four years, and if God and the world could agree that, just maybe, I finally deserve a little break, maybe I could stop subsisting and start rebuilding from the wreckage.

The Sprawling ATM Epic (as requested)

A long time ago (last week), I mentioned my tendency to occasionally spin epic tales out of really mundane activities, including one time that I visited the ATM.

Well, I can’t let everyone down! A little delayed (because this past work week was a little intense despite being shortened), but let me see if I can remember this epic tale of adventure…

(But under a cut, for I’m sure someone doesn’t want to scroll past all of this)

A LONG TIME AGO… in a town probably far, far away, there once was a teenager, who was stuck in a car with her mother and baby sister, the latter of which had made the mistake of asking her very bored older sister “what did you do yesterday?”

Being a good, good big sister, this teenager, who had recently gotten her drivers license and had a vehicle at her disposal, wanted to regale her younger sibling with a tale worthy of such a question. Sure, she could have just said something quick and let the conversation turn to other topics, but that would have been unfair to young pre-pubescent child, who always hung on her older sister’s every word and definitely never snarked at her in the way middle schoolers sometimes do that some less charitable folks might call “irritating”, but this narrator insists are “charming in their own way”.

And thus… she told her tale.

See, back in ye olden times of 2000, things were a little different than they are now. Back then, teenagers weren’t allowed to have things like Debit and Credit Cards™, but minors were allowed to have Savings Accounts. (Or perhaps our brave heroine was just ignorant of the finer points of finance. But that would be another tale.) Boring talks of legalities aside, the lack of access to funds via the simple swipe of a card was very troublesome for this teenager, for she had a Car™ that used to transport her to work (and occasional teenager things like The Movies and Stupid Adventures With Friends). And Cars™ required Gas™. And Gas™ required Money™.

Money itself was not the problem, for this brave teenager had a job and a paycheck, but she had to deposit said paycheck into a Savings account (manually, because this was back in the dark ages, before Direct Deposit™ became a Thing).

(Okay perhaps it was a thing, and our brave heroine really just didn’t understand the finer points of the banking system. We are getting sidetracked though, with all this talk of Reality. Le us focus instead on the story)

At this point, a cry came up from the back seat of the vehicle, “I just was curious, I didn’t want all this backstory.”

(Somewhere in the depths of the internet, @elveny, @aearyn, and @quax-of-dorne nodded in agreement.)

“You asked about my day,” the big sister replied, “and I don’t want to disappoint.”

Regardless of the finer points of the banking system of America in ye olden year of 2000, our brave, brave heroine was faced with a problem. She needed Gas™, for her faithful steed was edging close the empty line, and Mustangs were not known for their stellar fuel consumption. But as she opened her wallet, to her great dismay, flies flew out, and an empty money pouch greeted her.

“This will not do at all!” She cried. “If I try to pump gas without paying first, the constabulary will be after me, and rightly so!”

So, emboldened to take care of her mode of transportation so Teenagers Things could still be done, she hopped into ‘Stang the Magnificent (for that was his name, fite me), and began the long arduous mile and a half trek from her suburbia house to the closest bank. It was a long, road, and she had to turn many, many corners, and pull her steed to a stop at even more cursed stop signs. (This particular burb was known for its constables, who liked to spy on teenagers pretending to slow down to a stop and writing them tickets. And if you thought having to get cash was an epic at this point in time, try having to deal with traffic court.)

But, after a long, long road, she finally arrived at the bank, and to her great luck, the ATM lanes were empty. She rolled up to the first kiosk, hardly believing her luck. These lanes had been recently added, and she no longer had to find a good spot in front of the bank to sable her mighty steed so she could stand in line to procure her cash, which was far preferable to having to deal with standing in line inside, or go through the actual lanes. (For she was a minor at this point, and occasionally the tellers got snippy with that fact and forced her to go get her Mommy so she could withdraw $20 for gas monies.)

She reached over for her wallet, but to her great horror—it was missing! She gasped, wondering what evil had befallen her beloved coin purse, until she realized… she had left it at home. This was doubly troublesome, for her wallet also contained her drivers license, and that was not something she was supposed to be without while at the wheel of ‘Stang the Magnificent.

(She was also quietly grateful she had been so careful to come to a full and complete stop at every stop sign. For the police officers of her village were very gleeful in their ticket writing. It’s almost like teenagers had a general reputation for mouthing off to their elders. Not that our brave heroine was one of those. Of course not. She just liked to tell increasingly long stories to her baby sister who was definitely not crying for mercy at this point in the back seat.)

Sheepishly, she pulled away from the kiosk without a word, and had to navigate the very poorly designed parking lot, that required her to completely exit the bank onto a Busy Main road that she couldn’t turn left on back to the easy path home, but having to wind through an even longer and circuitous path back home. She did so cautiously, holding her breath the entire time, for she was without a license, and getting pulled over would be a Bad Thing.

She eventually made her way back home, but alas, she could not find her wallet! She searched high. And low. And then high again (just to be sure). Where, o where could it have gone?

She returned back to her faithful steed to commiserate with it, and apologize for not being able to get it the sustenance it so needed, when she found it. THE WALLET.

It had fallen underneath the passenger seat sometime on the long trek to the bank.

Oops.

Crisis duly averted, she and ‘Stang the Magnificent retraced their steps, through all of the twists and turns, and the many, many stop signs as well. Even though this time she came to a full and complete stop, she felt more confident, now that her License of Driving was securely back in hand. She reached her destination once again, although she had to wait for several other gentlefolk to conduct their affairs with the ATM Merchant, for she had dallied too long in her search.

Eventually, though, she came up to the ATM, and with card in hand, requested her $20 bill that would procure enough gasoline to satiate her mighty steed’s hunger. It flashed a warning at her, that since she was withdrawing from a savings account, this was the last withdrawal she’d be allowed without incurring a mighty fee.

“Oh no,” she muttered to herself, “will $20 be enough to get me through for the month?”

To be safe, she got an extra twenty, although she did so warily, for this was the Dark Times before we had pocket computers that always told us what our balance was. She would have had to keep this tally manually, in a checkbook, and she was sixteen. She had no time to be balancing a checkbook!

But fortune was with our brave heroine, and she did not overdraw her account. She hastily stuffed the cash into her beloved coin purse, and urged ‘Stang the Magnificent back toward the busy main street that would take them to the gas station.

“I can tell you about how I filled up the gas tank,” the older sister graciously offered at this point to her younger sibling in the back.

“No, no, I can’t take it anymore!” she cried. “I will never ask you any probing questions about your life ever again!”

And thus, the older sister won an even greater battle that day. And even to this very day, her younger sister never even realized it.

Hi anon! I actually have a list full of pointers!!

First of all, in the long run, I think the fact that I’m able to travel like I do, comes down to the fact that my motivation is Europe. I HAVE to go. There’s something inside of me that can’t stay here and keep seeing the same stuff over and over again. Europe looks NOTHING like the states, and the culture is what I absolutely love. So I think I just have an insane amount of motivation. As a result of that motivation, I feel as if I’ve made some fairly smart choices in order to continue saving like I do.

Second of all, there are two ways to go about being able to afford traveling. There are ways to save in order to be able to travel, and there are ways to save while you’re traveling.

In terms of what to do to prepare, here’s what I have done:

Join a credit union. Not only do they give you insanely low interest rates when your credit might not be the best, but they give you great deals on houses (when the time comes), cars, and personal loans. I joined mine when I was 18 and will be a lifetime member.

Build your credit. If you have a vehicle that you don’t make payments on, but know the one you have is going to take a dump soon, this is super important. I built my credit for about 8 months before I purchased my car. I got a credit card through my credit union and just put all of my purchases on that instead of using my debit card or cash. However, do not do so if you think that having a credit card means you can spend whatever you want. That money has to get paid off somehow, and as long as you’re smart about it, you can pay it off every month and never pay any interest, thus, building your credit.

Don’t buy a brand new car. This is a terrible idea altogether. The car loses value the second you drive it off the lot. Most people will sign the papers in a heartbeat, except they just signed for a $28,000 car with a 20% interest rate. If you’re smart about it and purchase a good vehicle for a good price, your monthly payments could be as low as $100 a month.

Try to find a job that’s willing to pay you above minimum wage, even if it’s only 25 cents more; or find a job that will eventually give you raise, such as an annual. My job is basically the reason I am able to afford what I do. I serve tables in California, which is not one of the states that is allowed to pay servers as low as $2.00 an hour. California requires tipped positions to be paid at least minimum wage. So I make $10.50 an hour plus my tips, which averages me out to about $18.00-$19.00 an hour. My job also does annual raises and Christmas bonuses, which help a lot. As much as serving tables kind of sucks sometimes, the money is fantastic, and I highly suggest it for anyone in college trying to save money to travel.

Don’t have your savings account linked to your checking account. Banks couldn’t have made things any easier to not save money. Having the two linked if you’re not the best with money, is an awful idea. When I made the decision to travel, I wanted to spend as little as possible, but it was hard when all I had to do was transfer something from my savings to my checking when I needed more money. I opened up a savings account with a completely different bank. The only way I can take money out, is to go in and take it out, and then I would have to drive another 15 minutes to my other bank just to put it in. You’re more likely to save money when you make things difficult for yourself to actually spend money.

Have an emergency savings account. Life happens, and sometimes you’re short on money, but your car breaks down. Even if you have to only put $5.00 away every month, it all adds up. Make it a completely separate account from everything else, and pretend the money doesn’t exist.

Get yourself a flyer miles credit card. I only suggest doing this once you’ve had a normal rewards credit card and are comfortable opening another credit account. But boy, does it come in handy! I now use my credit card from my credit union as my emergency card. I hardly use it anymore. I put any and all purchases I make on my miles card. If you’re planning on traveling all over, I suggest a Discover It miles card, or a Capital One Venture card. Discover gives you a mile and a half for each dollar you spend, and Capital One gives you two miles for each dollar you spend. Neither limit you to just one airline, like an Alaskan miles card would, as an example. I will be using my miles to buy my ticket to Alaska this summer, and won’t pay hardly anything out of pocket. I racked up the miles with my every day purchases like groceries, eating out here and there, and gas.

Try to put away a set amount into savings each month, or every pay period. This is not something I particularly do, just because living off of tips isn’t always predictable. I pretty much just look at what I made for the week, divide everything up according to which bills need to be paid, and put the rest in savings. But for some people, doing a set amount can help a lot. Most employers that do direct deposit, will do it for several accounts, so you can even have a set amount from each paycheck go straight into your savings.

In terms of how to save while you travel, here’s what I have found:

Find a cheap airline. Sometimes I feel like this is just a given, but some people will legitimately spend thousands of dollars on an international ticket. I have found that the cheapest airline flying to Europe during most times of the year, is Norwegian Air. Every now and then you can find a cheaper ticket through Virgin Airways. Here’s why I would still pay a little extra for Norwegian. These planes are absolutely enormous because the flights are so long. The sucker is called the Dream Liner for a reason. I have so much leg room, I feel like I’m in first class. Their meals are actual meals served hot, whereas most airlines serve sandwiches, or hot food that looks more like plastic. For not much extra, you can get a ticket one step up that includes meals, choosing your seats, and includes your bags. I like Norwegian because they fly straight from California to Europe. The curvature of the earth matters, and each time you touch down and take off, you add more flight time. I always fly to Poland as my destination, so I stop in Norway, and then go to Poland. It’s a LONG flight if you go from the west coast, but it’s worth it.

Fly during the fall and winter, and avoid holidays. Sometimes this is inevitable. But if your schedule is pretty open, fly during the ‘off’ season. Prices tend to go down in price to most places around the end of September, shoot up for Thanksgiving week, then go back down until the week of Christmas. During Christmas, they shoot back up, but as soon as New Year’s is over, they go back down. Prices don’t usually go back up in price until about May. Summer is when everyone wants to do their traveling, thus tickets are most expensive so airlines can make money. But for example, I flew to Iceland round trip from California in the middle of January for less than $400. No one wants to go to Iceland in the dead of winter, so prices are cheaper. You could pay around $1,000 just to go to the same place, but during the summer. Prices to the rest of Europe work the same way.

Use public transportation. I always travel with my best friend, Emily. We both refuse to use taxi’s because that’s how men figure out where you’re staying, and that’s like, asking to get abducted. Emily is fantastic with directions and public transportation, so she’s always in charge of that. Just about any city you go to will have public transportation, because Europe thinks about the important things. Tickets to use the buses, trams, or trains are almost always super cheap. All of the major cities I’ve been to - Prague, Budapest, London, Salzburg, Zagreb - all have great systems and good prices. Sometimes you can buy a bulk amount of tickets all at once, instead of buying individual tickets each time you go from one place to the next. It’s cheaper to buy in bulk, so if they offer it, use it.

Stay in Airbnb’s, not hostels or hotels. Hotels are pointless because you can’t cook. Wasted money eating out all three meals right there. Hostels are pointless unless you plan to travel with a large group, otherwise you usually have to share amenities, and not all of them have kitchens. Airbnb’s are super cheap for just about any city or town. They are fully furnished apartments or houses, so you can cook. Not to mention, some of them are so cute and I want to cry when I sometimes find the cutest one for a good price.

If you’re planning on traveling within several countries close to each other geographically, don’t fly. Once you’re in Europe, flying from place to place is super cheap. But if you’re visiting small countries that are all close to each other, look into a rail pass. Emily and I bought two first class passes for just under $1,000. They got us from Czech to Austria, to Hungary, then to Croatia. We bought them through Eurail and it was a great deal. We could hop on any train in each country as long as it was within the countries on our itinerary, and got us from one country to the next when it was time to move on. It ended up being cheaper to do it by train than to fly from place to place. Plus, you get to see the backcountry of everything, and it’s so worth it.

Make friends as you go. Meet people. Get to know the culture. Make friends. Most European cultures are all super welcoming. The more people you meet and stay in contact with during your time at home, the more likely you are to have either a cheap, or free place to stay the next time you go back. I could basically go anywhere in Poland at this point and not have to pay for a place to stay anywhere.

Avoid using cash. Economies are constantly changing. Currencies gain and lose value overnight. Take cash with you, and exchange a little just so that you can come back with some of it. I love to collect all the different currencies. But for the most part, avoid exchanging cash. It loses value, because places gain commission off of it, even if their windows say 0% commission. Research exchange rates of each place you’re going to just in case you need to exchange. All exchanges places have different rates, find the best one. If you plan to use cash for everything, withdraw it from an ATM. Try to stick to ones that are inside of banks, because you’re much less likely to use one that has a scanner in order to steal your information. But all in all, use a credit card. Debit cards aren’t safe to use internationally. If for some reason your information gets stolen, the second the money is used by someone else from your account, your bank likely won’t be able to get the money back. Credit cards are great because if your information gets stolen, the company or credit union is almost always able to fix the problem and you won’t owe the money someone else spent.

This is all I can think of as of right now, and I think I pretty much included everything. Feel free to ask more questions if you need to, and I can give you answers if I have them! Traveling is actually so cheap if you go about it in the right ways. Good luck!!

T&J Travels #7: Singapore 2016 (Part 1)

+ Cancelled Flight! +

Typhoon Nina was supposed to arrive exactly over the weekend (eve and Christmas) but took it's time and decided to do it on a Monday, which was the day of our flight. We only learnt that morning that our flight was already cancelled (haven't checked but it looks like they already announced it hours prior) and we were scrambling on what to do. Here are the problems:

The site of CebPac does not allow any rebooking. It is allowed but it looks like the only way is to call their hotline.

Hotline would automatically drop around the 14-minute mark.

CebPac doesn't answer to my pms.

I contacted both Agoda and Strand Hotel and was able to get a much definite answer from the latter in which they could only accommodate us for movement of dates but only within the year (it's Dec 26 already).

Both Reagan and I were attempting to reach them but to no avail. I was even switching to landline and mobile just to increase my chances of getting in queue. Later on the repetitive dialing bored the hell out of me that 5 hrs later just as my eyes were shutting on it's own, a non-automated voice spoke for the first time I remembered saying my thank yous even before she has done anything yet.

Flight the next day is already full and the day after that is simply non-negotiable because the flight back to Manila would coincide with New Year's Eve and we wouldn't like our families to celebrate on their own. So on another Christmas miracle, they have one flight left for two (!!!) around 8 PM. Yes the arrival would be really late, but learning that the trip back would be pushed from 10 AM to 7 PM, it has become a really sweet deal. Plus, that is enough time for Reagan to travel from Las Pinas to Boni, and both of us to the airport.

Maybe because of the carpet, but first impression was it looked like a casino. We didn't have any problems in finding our way out, maybe because there are less people around this time (midnight). I also find it much more compressed than HK's. Prerequisites of our arrival are as follows:

Get EZLINK (MRT/Bus cards) - 12SGD each-- 5SGD for a non refundable deposit and 7SGD as initial load.

Get a Singlet Wifi device - Fail! We were supposed to get a wifi device but we found out that since it's a holiday we cannot do a walk-in anymore. Since the line is getting longer by the minute we got a super expensive sim 38SGD. Later on we found out we were somehow "duped" being amateurs.

It wasn't planned but we went to a currency exchange counter after hearing them (cashier and some customers) speak in Filipino. From there we learnt that there's a 15SGD option for the same sim, enough for our stay for 4 days. We were asked the same question back at the counter but unfortunately we were still given a much more expensive sim :-(.

We got the idea of getting a coach from the other cashier at the sim counter when we went back to try and return our sim and get a cheaper one. We were directed at the only transportation option left that is much more cheaper than a taxi: coach (9SGD per person, pay with Mastercard / Visa only) instead.

+ Strand Hotel +

Luckily they kept our reservation and was able to check in flawlessly. We were given a spacious room (I liked that Reagan is with me in getting a decent hotel) and bath. They even have a tub! Almost everything we needed is here, except for more outlets (we only got one but that is easy to correct) and a hair dryer. They offer it for a deposit of 20SGD, in which you can either keep the dryer or refund your cash.

There are so many ideals in this hotel! The location alone has so much to offer:

The hotel is in the list of the airport coach so we would have no issues in getting one no matter how late we arrive.

We are on the same block with a bus stop

We are also at a walking distance with Bras Basah MRT and in the near future, a new train station right in front of it as well.

For 24/7 convenience, 7/11 is right in front of it.

You would never go hungry because restaurants/coffee shops abound within the vicinity, Starbucks, Din Tai Fung and Food Republic to name a few.

Near SMU so on Christmas break so there's not much people around.

Near National Museum and other places of interest.

Oh man I have so many stories from my faux-retail job:

- Our lobby closes at 4 PM. Our lobby has ALWAYS closed at 4 PM. This is not something that we changed any time recently. We still have long-time members come in at 3:59 and joke about making it last-minute. Then, of course, MORE members will come in because so-and-so was in there, too, so they figured they’d come in and get their stuff done instead of going through the open drive-up. People will walk up to the already locked door after 4:00 and yank on it and then stand there looking offended and confused until they see the sign that has literally always been out there stating that the lobby closes at 4:00, then get back in their car and screech around to the drive-up window and act like we purposely locked the doors just to ruin their day. There have been many new and non-members that do it too. Particularly bad were a couple who had already been told that the lobby closed at 4:00 and if they wanted to return with paperwork for the loan they were trying to get then they needed to come in before then; who then came at 4:18 PM and tried to open the door and then stood there BANGING on the glass window and gesturing at us, then barged in through the door when I unlocked it to try to tell them to go around to the window. They were all “we know you’re locked up but we wanted to get this done today!!!!!” All they did was hand me some paperwork for me to copy and then leave. I was furious. (They were also vague about what the loan was for and it turned out they were getting an expensive puppy from a notoriously awful pet store that gets their dogs from puppy mills. I wanted to die.)

- Phones are becoming such a problem. My coworker put up signs with just a cell phone crossed out and I told her at the time that they were too vague and people would ignore them but she didn’t think so. She was wrong. I had a lady literally hold her finger up and hush me when I greeted her as she drove up to the window with her phone to her ear. I wanted to climb through the bulletproof glass, rip the phone from her hand, and smash it in the driveway. People will answer their phones in the middle of a transaction and ignore me when I ask important questions (do you want that in checking or savings, is this for a loan payment, how would you like that applied, this check hasn’t been endorsed properly, how would you like your cash back, etc) then after I’ve had to complete the transaction without their direction they say they didn’t want it done that way. Well, gee, Sharon, maybe if you’d GET OFF YOUR FUCKING PHONE, we could have done it right the first time.

- That one lady that let her grandson take one of the toys because he screamed when she told him to put it back, claimed she’d bring it back later when she could get it away from him, then never did.

- People who hand me cash or checks and tell me what they want to do with it and then just stand there and stare. There’s a deposit slip right in front of you. Use it. It’s there for both you and me - if I do something wrong, there is a record. If YOU do something wrong, there is a record. You’re literally setting yourself up if you don’t use it. (Not that people can figure out how to write them out properly anyway - it’s apparently rocket science to fill out a deposit slip that basically lays it out for you.)

- When my coworker and I are both standing at the counter and one of us is clearly busy, people still go to the busy one. I’ll be standing there staring at them and greeting them and they’ll still go over to her, even though she usually has loan paperwork spread across her station and is very clearly doing something. She just awkwardly tells them to go to me and I internally facepalm. Oddly, the opposite happens when I’m on break. I sit in a corner behind a little wall but I can still see the teller area fairly well and people will walk in, see my coworker at her station, and still go to my empty station and start filling out their deposit slips. Sometimes they’ll move over to her, but most of the time she ends up going and grabbing their stuff, doing the transaction on her computer, and then going back to my station to give them their receipt. Like ??? okay. People.

- One time a couple were both at my station making transactions and the guy just turns around, watches a person make a turn out on the street through the window, points and angrily follows the car’s movements while saying very loudly, “THAT WAS AN ILLEGAL U-TURN, I SAW THAT. I SAW YOU, MISTER.” What’s worse is that it wasn’t and people turn there 100 times a day, it’s just an awkward turn... But totally legal. It was weird.

- Personal hygiene, folks. Please. Sometimes we have to open all three windows in the lobby regardless of the weather outside because some folks smell like they just bathed in a lake of B.O. and cigarette smoke and leave a lingering haze after they’re gone.

- The people who come in and jokingly say, “give me all of your money!” Har dee har har har, I haven’t heard that one 12164165 times in the 8-1/2 months I’ve been here... Add to it the people who say, “you’re going to give me $10,000 for free, right?! Ha! Ha!”

- The people who call to have us transfer money or make a VISA payment for them but rattle it off so fast that I have literally no idea what words just came out of their mouth. Not to mention the assumption that we’re just standing next to the phone with a pen and paper in hand waiting anxiously for them to call and aren’t trying to multi-task because they totally didn’t just call while we were in the middle of something else equally as important as the transfer they could have done online. (Also in that vein, the people who call to ask what their account balance is when we have a home banking website. Or who ask if we can send them a copy of their statement (like once a fucking week) for free “because I don’t want to print it off of my email!” So we started charging $5 a page to get them to stop. They still don’t.)

- “There’s a transaction pending in my account that I don’t want to go through, can you block it?” “Sorry, it’s already pending so we can’t.” “But this company is STEALING my MONEY. I need it blocked!” “The transaction is already in the process, there is literally no way we can stop it now. Have you perhaps tried talking to the company at any point to get them to stop these recurring payments?” “No, I signed up for their service and don’t want to pay for it anymore. I just want you to block it. I don’t want to talk to them anymore.” *facepalm* “You need to talk to them and cancel their service because it’ll be a $35.00 stop payment fee from us and there’s still no guarantee that we can stop the payment every time.” “Okay, I guess I’ll call them...” Repeat every month ad infinitum.

- Also: “There’s a charge in my account that I don’t know what it is!!! Can you tell me!!! Can you return it?!?! Go to Wal-mart and pay their 3% fee or accept the hold like everybody else.

- One time I had a lady get shaking-mad over a $5 cashier check fee when she wanted to take a fairly small (for us) amount of money out as a check instead of cash. She threw a fit and acted like I was holding a gun to her head and forcing her to take cash because she wasn’t about to pay a standard fee that every financial institution charges. She then called two months later to raise another fit about it and threaten to take her savings elsewhere. She had over $40,000 in her savings and we know she has other savings accounts with other banks on top of it. But that $5 charge to cover the cost of the cashier check made her see red. When I told my boss, she was like, “good, let her leave. Members like that don’t bring in any money for us so I’d even cut the check myself!” (We’re not profit driven but fees and loans keep us open - a simple savings account actually costs us money. Keep this in mind when your credit union charges you for services that take time and resources to complete.)

I could probably write a novel on the weird and obnoxious experiences I’ve had in the short amount of time I’ve spent working in a credit union, which is basically a glorified retail job, but it’s 2:38 AM and I should stop.

I’ll go more into detail, but long story short my business partner owes me about $630 and is being shady about paying me back. This former colleague and friend of mine used to work together at a print shop. We hated the management there and felt like we weren’t treated fairly. We decided to start a print company together because we’re good at screen printing and we’re both very artistic. I’m a graphic designer too so it’s easy for me to work that side of things. Anyway, my vision (what I thought was our vision) was to be more of a boutiqu operation and instead of doing a bunch of commercial work (schools, landscaping companies, etc) we wanted to work with the artistic small and local businesses in our area. I am very well connected around here so getting jobs was not hard for me. I recently got a credit card and it allowed for 0% interest for 15 months. We needed some basic equiptment so after doing the math, I could purchase the equipment and we could pay it off with our first few jobs (that were already lined up). In total, I invested about $1100 in the business. Part of which was freelance money that had nothing to do with printing but I ran the job threw the company to help establish revenue and whatnot. We worked with an online invoicing program so most of the jobs were paid digitally by clients except for like 2 that were paid either in cash or by check. I was able to partially pay back my investment with the some of the cash/check money we got which was about $370. Well my partner got let go from her fulltime job and I was currently working freelance parttime on top of managing our print company. I was determined to use the opportunity for both of us to put all our energy into the business. After 5 months or so prior to her losing her job, I felt like I was the only one making an effort to network and get jobs for us which was getting frustrating. So we sat down and ran the numbers because we should’ve had enough in our account to pay me back now. At this point I was owed $730. I look at our invoicing account and was trying to figure out how to withdrawal the money. Well......back way we had our first job (7 jobs ago), she withdrew the payment to purchase merch needed for the job. Probably about half of that income was needed for the merch, the rest...who know where it went. Because she did that in the beginning, it set up the account to direct deposit to her bank account. All the money we made was going into her account as we received it. The whole time. When we both realized fhat while doing the numbers, she said she had no idea that was happening...supposedly she doesn’t check her bank account often. In the moment I was like “If I freak out, that’ll make matters worse. She’ll pay me back and we’ll keep building the business.” This is a person who always verbally worries about not having enough money and how her bills are so expensive and she just lost her main source of income.. I told her that I wouldn’t be using my credit card anymore the business. After a month she didn’t find another job yet and was being pretty picky about jobs. I stopped doing anything for the business because I ended up getting a great job with great pay and benefits that I was really passionate about. Overall, she got to a point where she didn’t care what jobs we did because she needed to pay rent. That’s not my problem though and the business was never supposed to be a main source of income, but instead a cool way for us to print our own stuff and that of our small business friends while making some extra money..a side-gig. Two months later she finally gets two parttime jobs, cool fine. She owes me $730. She said she can only afford to pay me $100 a month until it’s all paid. I’m a reasonable sympathetic person so I agree. She paid me $100 for the month of March and that’s it. A few weeks ago, I text her about it and she says that she had to go to the hospital recently and now she has a huge hospital bill to pay but that she might get some print jobs and she’ll use the money to pay me back..... Sounds like BS and an empty promise. It’s weird that she didn’t tell me upfront about it and at this point I’m tired of being taken advantage of and paying me back basically isn’t a priority for her. She’s off on a trip in Vegas visiting family right now. I’m annoyed and I don’t know how to get her to pay me back. Her boyfriend makes more money than I do but it feels unethical to confront him about the problem. Any advice is appreciated. Also I’m 26, don’t know a ton about business. I learned alot so please none of the “You’re naiive” BS.TL;DR - Former friend/business partner had unknowingly set our income to direct deposit into her bank account. I invested $1100 and there was $730 that I was still owed. 5 months later we found out that was happening and she had been spending the money without realizing it and couldn’t pay me back right away because she lost her job. Now has job and keeps putting it off beside paying back $100. Still owed $630...halp.

Ok...My car was parked at my work which is privately owned. An ex employee who was inebriated, backed into the driver's side quarter panel. Now, my car has a HUGE dent and it won't lock. I left it at the body shop and the adjuster told me it might be considered totaled. My car was in immaculate condition, mechanically, as well as cosmetically. In addition, my car has less then 93,000 miles on it. What should I expect? I am a student and I rely on this vehicle for my only means of transport.
