rgg can have a You Did The Bare Minimum award for keepin jo alive and not continuin the trend of one-shottin every interestin antag we meet but they esp deserve it cause lettin jo live the rest of his days in guilt and shame without the power to do anythin is pretty thematically consistent for him. if i may be insane to say.

Thematically the perfect consequence for him#like again One Thing to let him live but it also just so happens to play into that eternal guilt/utter powerlessness so well#this type of thing is going to decay my brain until LAD8 comes out and all of this is undone somehow but for now.... i love his misery...#ok this is the only vaguely. Ok, forgive me if the following is a bit aggro but I feel like a lot of people seem to forget some very important facts about Godzilla (the IP, not the character)
I genuinely can't take people who place blame on directors for 'bad Godzilla characterization' seriously. Especially Dougherty and Wingard. Before I get into my rant, I just feel the need to remind everyone of this quote Wingard gave in regards to writing Godzilla for GvK:
Toho actually has an entire laundry list of rules Godzilla needs to follow that came out around GvK's release. The actual list is super long and with a lot of frankly weird points, but this is one of their main ones. Theatrical Godzilla doesn't emote. That is what they tell directors and that's a rule they need to follow. But, on the same token, there are ways around it and some directors are afforded some negotiating power on this front. The quote, for example, is in reference to Goji's famous smile from GvK.
One of the largest ways around it in fact is having characterization come from external sources that aren't the films. In fact, almost every single piece of info that builds Godzilla's character in the MV comes either from moments in the films that are intentionally vague, things like the comics or novelizations, or Word of God tweets from Edwards and Dougherty (sidenote: the reason you never hear about stuff like the Dougherty tweets coming from Wingard is that he literally doesn't have Twitter. A lesson I think we can all learn from). This is not unintentional, these are literally the only times they're allowed to get away with breaking a few of these rules.
Wingard, Doughtery, Edwards- all are huge Godzilla fanatics and it gets on my nerves a tad when people tear into them for rules out of their control. I probably don't need to tell everyone that Dougherty used to retweet ship art for Mothzilla and engaged with fans at length back when he was still on Twitter (Oh yeah, he also has since left Twitter. Man, maybe these directors had the right idea or something?); and Wingard has come out saying he wants to do a Godzilla-focused movie next if Legendary lets him come back, probably because he himself recognizes he's been playing favorites a little bit. I'm sure the directors would love to give Godzilla more depth and personality, it's just that Goji's always been Toho's favorite boy that they're very picky about. Like- I hate to be that guy- but we easily could've gotten the Transformers treatment and gotten saddled with a director like Michael Bay for one of these films and the Monsterverse would be dead on arrival. These people clearly care but are obliged to follow some ground rules they may or may not agree with. Godzilla's characterization is left mostly ambiguous for this reason. Audiences are supposed to fill in the blanks. Hell, people in this blog/hellsite have already done that! We've done that with our own interpretations and that's what the directors are going for in lieu of being allowed to do that themselves. May just be a me thing, but I'd much rather have audience interpreted characterization and very high quality content then shitty/no content and Godzilla becoming a dead franchise again.
And- in regards to the Twitter stuff-
-I don't care. Nobody should care. Just- just don't even give them the light of day and let their asinine takes die in the darkness. It's better this way.
I understand all this. I understand. I've heard that Toho has their rules for what not to do with their favorite monster, and I still think "Godzilla can't emote" is a dumb rule, but what the fuck can I do about it beyond the usual fan content. I know this. I get it.
I'm just getting tired of discussing it and want to stop before the discussion starts going in circles or something.
I'm going to go outside for a while.

Has the staff/studio admitted galo/lio are a thing or are they saying 'just bros'? I'm new to Promare and the fandom and am so used to being queerbaited. *frustrated bi sigh*
trigger hasn’t confirmed nor denied them being anything other than friends. even then i can’t recall the term ‘friends’ being specifically mentioned (correct me if i’m wrong). it IS pretty obvious though that they developed a close bond and shared intimate moments throughout the film. keep in mind as well that it has been mentioned before that any of trigger’s works are open to fan interpretation (expanded below).
since you didn’t ask for this long of an answer, i’m going to give you one anyway. strap in cause there’s a lot to unpack.
SIDE NOTE TO ANYONE ELSE READING: please keep in mind these are just opinions. the movie is highly enjoyable either way and ofc you’re free to believe what you want. ignore this and happily move on if you don’t want to. there’s an obvious stigma towards shipping in general (tbh i’m hesitant myself sometimes) but with promare there’s a lot of room to read between the lines so here we go~
spoilers below
ok so first and foremost:
this screenshot was taken from this tweet specifically and i want to reiterate that this is all purely fan speculation and mainly my view(s).
i didn’t intend for this response to get as in-depth as it has, but now you’re coming down the rabbit hole with me. i'm going to briefly talk about this memo of sorts i found from op’s twitter linked above. (this is from the original messenger, not the acc that posted the convo.) it’s about their personal views regarding promare, LGTBQ, and japanese culture.
op brings up a good point that western and japanese cultures are extremely different. that much is obvious and i didn’t fully grasp it until i started to write this response. op brings up another good point and that is: trigger quite possibly didn’t intend for all this queer-baiting to happen because of these huge differences. WHICH IS TOTALLY OKAY AND UNDERSTANDABLE because gay thoughts aside, promare is simply a great movie about two dudes who come together and save the world.
now with that out of the way, here’s me ranting about aforementioned dudes and my western gay thoughts.
1. there’s this scene which pretty much speaks for itself. galo is talking about wanting his matoi gear but the gesture is self-explanatory. i mean look at the way his hand is even positioned.
2. then the most obvious scene to discuss is when galo kisses performs ‘CPR’ on lio in order to save his life. the action shouldn’t come as a surprise since galo witnessed lio do the same to a previous mad burnish member. and since it’s not a random course of action, i can understand why people don’t think anything more of it. i still have to commend trigger for the tasteful scene (pun intended) though. speculations aside, the moment seamlessly ties together the two’s relationship and how lio has come to rely on galo.
the screenshot below is also from the wiki about this scene. take it with a grain of salt since it’s a fandom page.
3. after the kiss CPR, the two form galo de lion to save the world and this happens in the fire/cloud formation that follows:
trigger thought they were being sneaky. or maybe they didn’t. who knows? (see above). personally, i don’t understand why the heart shape was necessary, but staff chose to include it. and while it’s common for westerners to believe the heart is a sign of romance, that may not be the case in japan. however, idk cause this is the extent of my current knowledge.
4. another thing worth mentioning is lio’s clothing throughout the film. in the beginning, he starts out in his full burnish armor. soon after, he’s seen with his actual clothing which is adorned with buckles, belts, etc (this is also used as a symbol, but that’s not the point of this academic essay. stay tuned for part 2). at the end of the film, he’s seen shirtless.
the reason behind this is mentioned on lio’s wiki page and also expanded upon by the twitter op i mentioned above. as he becomes closer to galo, he slowly sheds his constraints and becomes free. you can even say that lio opens up his heart to galo.
when you think about it, lio being shirtless makes perfect sense since galo himself never wears a fucking shirt. a fitting end. (ooo another pun. that one was unintentional.)
5. there’s a few things outside of the movie too. the lyrics to inferno for example. assuming the song is from lio’s pov, which a lot of people have (idk if it’s confirmed), the lyrics can be interpreted romantically (or even platonically if that’s still your vibe. although if you’ve read this far, i’m assuming you think they’re at least a little gay by now):
if we also assume that the subject of the lyrics is galo, lio is either calling or associating him with home. regardless of what you think, the song still shows that galo and lio have a close relationship.
6. also for your consideration, the official wedding bands:
even though the rings are directly associated with the franchise, the designs are pretty neutral. it was a smart move from a marketing standpoint. twitter and tumblr once again exploded with fanart and the shipping/movie hype continued.
7. lastly here are some official arts for your thoughts:
TLDR; galo and lio are gay (maybe) but not really cause you’re free to interpret it however you the fuck you want.
thanks for coming to my ted talk
#anon#ask#regardless of shipping and in case it wasn't obvious: i#love#promare#what is grammar#don't know her#i tried to put this all under 'keep reading' but i think tumblr glitched out#long post

WIP Challenge
I got tagged by @kikithedeceiver to do this!
Challenge: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous.
Here’s the thing. I don’t have many separate WIP files; most of them are in one huge doc. and most of the separate wip files are... pretty dead? but ok whatevs. under a read more since it’s long...... and my ego won’t let me skip snippets hjkhkhk thanks for the idea Kiki
From my main miscellaneous folder:
50 Grades of Steele. 1 and a half chaps of a role-flipped 50 Shades of Grey rewrite (i haven’t read the books so I extra don’t care about the characters lol). why do i still have it i’ve lost interest.... *side eyes her entire wip ecosystem* ...Then I see my interview subject, seated at her desk.
"Mr. Grey. I'm pleased to meet you."
And I stop breathing. [end CH1]
[open CH2) I forgot to mention something: I exaggerate occasionally. But I'm not now. I literally stop breathing for a few seconds. A thousand thoughts are racing through my mind, which doesn't help my chest stop seizing, but the main problem here is that Anastasia Steele is quite possibly the most beautiful woman I've ever seen.
Fanfic idea masterlist. my most active file and where I keep most of my WIPS, unless they get too “large”. Organized by fandom. lotta stuff i keep passing by & may as well be dead but don’t wanna delete. here’s a zero-draft snippet of probably the next chapter of my G-rated yukyoru fic collection
He grabbed a pillow and placed it to his chest, grabbed her arm, and yanked her to him, praying his idea would work.
Seconds passed and he didn't transform. He put his arms around her gingerly. Should he try to immobilize her or would that make it worse?
She made the decision for him. "Mom," she sobbed, clutching him with an iron grip. "N-Need to help...!"
His stomach dropped to his shoes.
Thudding footsteps announced Yuki's arrival. "What's wrong?! Honda-san--"
He didn't say "What did you do?" The thought raced by and Kyo said, "Grab a pillow and help me!"
As Yuki positioned the pillow and himself without having to ask, Kyo said, "She won't wake up. I don't know what to do!"
"Night terror," Yuki said tightly. He was too close but it almost didn't matter. "Not much you can do besides wait."
MayxWard BDSM fic agents of SHIELD. mix of notes and actual writing. kind of a half AU. Melinda climbed into the driver's side and buckled in, then started up the car. "If you've not ridden on the left before you might have motion sickness. It's normal. Just close your eyes until—" She paused as she looked at him; his hands shook so much he couldn't manage the seatbelt. "Here, let me."
"Thanks," he muttered with a sigh, looking rueful.
Modern AU Zelink. What it says on the tin~ Teenage-ish Zelink, with a mash of supporting characters from other games. another mix of notes and fic. Link wasn't sleeping tonight. Tonight was the night he'd been planning for and awaiting for weeks. He was going on a quest: the quest to meet Princess Zelda.
She wasn't really a princess, of course. That was just her nickname. Zelda Nohansen was Hyrule's sweetheart, the most sought-after young actress in the movie business. And Link had fallen in love with her the first time he'd seen her, two years ago in a tiny theater in Kakariko.
PMMMfic homumado. Madoka Magica. AU, been around since about an hour after I finished the series (5 years yikes, still gotta watch Rebellion). Homura's time power still somewhat involved, but Mami's an adult, everyone's at a boarding school (I think?) where ~things aren't as they first seem~ and Madoka has mysterious powers and night terrors. just notes at the moment.
SoubixHitomi. Loveless. 3 unfinished/dead first-person Shinonome-senseixSoubi snippets, all of ‘em spicy.
yvy abo. Yuri On Ice. Yuri (Katsuki!!)/Victor/Yuko(!!?!), my attempt at. well. omegaverse(!!!!!!!). orignally started as part of a “bad YOI fic” bigbang and now I’m taking it seriously dgdgfg. Alpha Yuko. “Please, please stop,” she whispered, like saying it aloud would make any difference. But the pressure in her head kept building. Her limbs had begun to itch restlessly.
And Victor wouldn’t let go of her hand.
With the last scrap of her control, she straddled him quickly and kissed him awake.
Even in half-sleep he arched to meet her, and when he opened his eyes sapphire blue had already turned stormy with lust.
yvy canonfuturefic. Yuko-focused following of canon, or: how canon can I keep YOI while still rareship OT3ing it. She and Yuri fall in and out of love, in between falling for Victor. Victuri is still my life I swear
“You have got to watch this,” she tells Yuri. She watches Yuri’s face instead of the video, having seen it at least forty times by now.
Yuri’s eyes transform into beacons of awe, and Yuko swallows around her rapid heartbeat, breaths coming too short. She sees everything she’s feeling and more on his face. She remembers that she loves him, that he’s real and here and more important than the beautiful boy on her phone who’s trying to pull her under to a scary new world.
ZnT ot3 bdsm AU. Zankyou no Terror, 9/12/Lisa. mix of notes and fic, not just PWP. in heavy need of editing bc a lot was inspired by a non-spicy book.
“But it’s not just me. It’s everyone. You need everyone because you have no idea how to need yourself. Or even how to be yourself.”
“You’re wrong.” The force and volume of her voice shocked her and pushed her onward. “You and Touji. I don’t need anyone except you and Touji! Because you both taught me how to be myself-- no, how to find that on my own. I know exactly who I am, and that me isn’t complete without both of you!” She could feel the tears streaming down her face, yet somehow her voice didn’t waver. She felt so full of conviction she could burst into flames. “Don’t you understand, Arata? We’re all meant to be together.”
From my SnK folder:
Cave of the Crystal Maiden (working title). Aruani. Modern AU. MMORPG shenanigans with a dollop of magical realism/supernatural. Just notes. @portraitofa-girl suggested “meeting online” and it’s been there literally for years oh lord im sorry. no fic yet, just notes.
Falling Anthem (working title) Modern AU Levihan, art student Hange and young professor Levi. just notes. fic one in a planned series. also has been years ;_;
Raindrops and Soft Steps. Jearmin. unsurprisingly, modern AU. One morning, when Jean looks out of his bedroom window, he sees a boy dancing across the street. In the street, to be exact. There wouldn't be anything unusual about that, Jean supposes, except it's raining cats and dogs outside.
In my IAMXfic folder (fff i almost skipped this):
2ndPOVCalberto (DO NOT CORRUPT WITH HET) ChrisxAlberto? not much to say?? yes i know they’re real people??? which applies to everything after this oh my god *crawls under desk* Of course she knows; she is annoyingly perceptive when it comes to romance. The only thing preventing you from asking her (like a fucking lovestruck teenager) if Alberto likes you back is emptying that beer bottle. By then the only thing on your mind is ordering another.
CalbertImmi. i can’t even keep my poly shit outta RPF ahaha omhg Imogen has a conversation with her lover's lover. (AlbertImmi, sequel to...) Imogen finds herself in an unenviable position. (emerging CalbertImmi)
Alternate summaries (CC POV, first fic?): Chris loves two people. He doesn't want to choose. Chris has fallen in love a few times in his life. But he's never fallen for two people at once. (Chris also isn't good at choosing.)
ChrisxJ. several self-insert fics bc CC is just that powerful, apparently. haven’t looked at the file in a long time,,,,,
He started calling people to the stage with him, and one by one, my row emptied.
"Come on, yeah, come on," he was saying, waving his hand in an inviting gesture and grinning like a little kid. "Hey, you want to?" I did a double take.
"Me?" I mouthed, pointing at myself just to be sure. He nodded, smiling wider.
So it was that I walked unsteadily down the ramp and waited in line, feeling like I didn’t belong there. Soon I was next in line. What would I say? What would I do? I was sure if I opened my mouth I’d either burst into tears or faint.
Genderswapped IAMX sci-fi. The sci-fi was inspired by a word prompt, genderswapping by my own brain. (play spot the Immi lmao) Across the aisle, Sam rolled his eyes. “Leave Chris alone; she’s nervous.”
“And put on your own seatbelt, Johann,” shouted Jess, two seats back and in Sam’s aisle.
Patrick turned to look at Chris. “Subspace travel is a bitch,” he said simply, and turned back to his book.
“Oh, I feel much less nervous now,” Chris said with a sardonic grin. “How do you know that, anyway?”
"I'm not exactly what I seem to be." He didn’t look up.
Chriimmi (While I Was Gone inspired). Chris/Imogen, inspired by scenes from Sue Miller’s While I Was Gone.
"You really ought not to do that, you know," he said softly.
"Do what?"
"Sneak up on me."
My eyes slid from his face. "I didn't mean to. It just... happened."
"Mm." I glanced back at him; he wore a lopsided smile. "Not that I minded." The tension was so strong the air nearly vibrated with it, yet I held my tongue, terrified that I was the only one feeling it. He took a breath, deep, nearly rising on his toes. "No. I didn't mind at all." He took my hand, circled his thumb over the back. My breath caught as I felt it, as I watched him looking down at our hands.
Chriimmi bathtub dream. dream inspired Chris/Immi smut.
Chriimmi twitter. twitfic plus some, inspired from an actual tweet iamx made that i’m still not over.
@ imogenheap Come sing your lovely lyrics with us in London. @ IAMX misses you. CCx
ChrisxImmi main. grab bag of Chriimmi I was too lazy to put into separate docs.
“What do you think?” She grinned, twirling.
He cleared his throat. “Ah, I-Imogen, what are you wearing?”
“Well, I didn’t want to clash with your theme… Janine helped me. Does it work?”
Scandalously short skirt, midriff-baring top, knee-high boots.
“You’re trying to kill me, aren’t you? You’re trying to fucking kill me.”
Her grin only widened, even though a blush had started.
Fic edit chriimmi ver. yeah. editing someone else’s original fic to be chrimmi. either never posting or editing the frick out of. ~_~
He kissed her neck, whispered into it, “I love you.”
Imogen laughed. “Bollocks,” she said lazily.
”I do!” Chris protested. She looked down at him, nestled on her shoulder. He looked back, open, a little adoring. “I fell in love with you halfway through the show; I sang every note just for you.”
”Oh, please. You couldn’t have seen me.”
”No,” he said. “But I knew you were out there… I knew it had been you the minute I saw you backstage.”
Hospital Chriimmi. In which my guilty feeling over RPF are even worse bc of the inspiration ^_^U “Ms. Heap. What a pleasant surprise.” It’s surprising, how well she remembers his voice.
“Mr. Corner, what have you got yourself into?”
“Oh, just a bit of lingering insomnia. You know how it is.”
She takes a seat in the chair near his bed, crossing her legs. “Well, I’ve certainly had a sleepless night here and there, but I’ve never ended up in hospital from it. So no, I don’t suppose I do know.” Her tone is light, but her smile has begun to crack.
ImmixChris genderbend smut. the my secret friend video is... fertile material. have not actually written the smut yet.
...he saw us as characters– we put on those clothes and become separate from ourselves, removed. Whereas I simply felt like myself in men’s clothes, and instead of feeling what He felt for Her, I just kept right on feeling what I felt for Chris, amplified to a distracting level.
ReluctantdommeImmixSubCC. ...shrug emoji? notes and uh. visualizing.
Vampire Chriimmi. based on a dream. smutty. inspired by True Blood so wow that’s old.
From my Markipairings folder:
demon dream. markiplier self insert...... ughhhhhhhh o///o
"You can have me," I tell the creature. "But this one," I jerk my head toward Mark, "comes with me. He's mine, you see." A bold proclamation to make, but in the moment I know that the truth in those words surpasses everything I've ever said. He is mine, and saying the thought out loud fills me with courage. He squeezes my hand, two short and a long one so strong I think he might break it.
I know we’ll win.
DommeJujY. same as above, same as the next four. smutty.
Fight team AU. i forget where i got this one from. vaguely inspired by loveless i guess. The first clear thought I had was, He shouldn't have gone ahead of me. The second one was, I should have been able to protect him. But these came later, after the rage went away, after I hugged him and apologized, after I bandaged him…
Gaming meetcute. i win some contest or whatever to secretly tagteam w/ Mark. stuff happens and yeah......
The adrenaline surges through my veins as I take in the scene. Mark's avatar is flailing around, backed into a corner by some Eldritch Abomination and holy shit, the graphics in this game are amazing.
"This is not good, I can't move, I can't move…"
There's a voice in the back of my head screaming to shut the game down, to get that horrible thing off the screen. I ignore it.
Markinpanties. .......smut.
shifter-slight sci-fi AU. shrug emoji.
I looked up from the ground and saw I was heading straight for a brick wall. There was no time to slow down. I braced for impact...
It didn't happen. I opened my eyes and found myself in a caf.
What.
Looking behind me, I saw a door. On impulse I walked over and opened it; the tree-lined street I could see through the glass was indeed there. No brick wall to smack my face into. Bewildered, I turned around and looked for a seat, choosing one near a window.
Gouldiplier~. master doc of ficbits of my cracky mccrackship, MarkiplierxEllie Goulding.
I check my phone during break time again. My selfie has been liked and retweeted thousands of times, and I shake my head in disbelief; I don't think that will ever stop surprising me, deep down. To make things even better, Mark's liked it! I'm in the middle of a happy jig when I realize there's a text from him and a squeak of joy slips from me.
hellooo gorgeous
looks like you're having fun. Hope the shoot's going great! <3
I quickly send a reply. it has been. Be glad when it's done tho. Missin u lots xo
Markipicbunnies. fanart of Mark for Gouldiplier insipration. photographer au.
"Ms. Goulding, I'm really not sure about this…"
"I produce pictures that are intimate because I'm an intimate being, Mark." Ellie looked at him directly, a hint of a smile shaping her lips. "Deep down, I think you are too. We just need to draw you out a bit."
showersexgouldiplier. WELP. IT’S SMUT.
Also I have folders for my 2010/11 nanowrimo novel that are kinda still WIPs but also kinda not
i’m gonna tag.... @kippielovesyou @kiridork and @mistergrass and anyone else who wants to do this can too :3

Survey #204
“welcome to the gospel of dismay.”
Have you ever started reading a book and wondered if you’d read it before? I don't believe so. What has been bothering you a lot lately? Just job stuff... My VR coach and I are having difficulty finding something suitable for me (or something I'm even qualified for) to the point it's looking like I have no choice but to reach out of my comfort zone quite a bit. Thankfully, whatever I do, she goes to work with me and my case isn't closed until I feel totally comfortable at the job, but I just don't want to hop around five times until I find something that fits. I'm just ready to be settled into a job that's not torture for me. What (or who) have you been missing lately? I've been missing Sara really, really badly. My friend Alex, too. It's seemed lately that I only matter when she wants to talk, solely about her boyfriend. As for what, motivation... It's been running low low low lately. Miss having the drive to write like I used to. Miss hobbies. I miss doing things. Are you trustworthy? Yes. Did your parents teach that white lies were ok? In few situations, such as not to hurt other's feelings. Have you ever hallucinated? When coming off of a medication, yes. I saw moving shadows. Do you sleep with your door open or closed? Open. Roman would neeeever let me sleep with it closed, but even then, I prefer not to have it closed. My mom sleeps right outside my room on the couch, and even though we're sleeping, it gives me a natural sense of security to be able to see her. I'm such an infant. By God, do I need to loosen up on my attachment to her. What flags do you have in your room, if any? None. What (or who) is the best thing that ever happened to you? Recovery is the best thing, as for who, Sara. Although in some ways you could say Jason just because of how he changed me to an incredible degree and brought about the development of a lot of strength and less naivety, plus a LOT of self-discovery. I guess it depends on how you look at the question. What is the worst decision you ever made? Essentially turning Jason into a god. Letting my life depend on him loving me. Do you miss college? Jfc, I miss school PERIOD. I don't need to give the sob story about how I'm like a prisoner to my house again and how I don't really have friends. I miss having a purpose, and I neeeeed to be exposed to strangers again for social exercise, as well as hopefully to make friends. I just want something to do and work towards my career. I stg my fucking old college better get their shit together so I can go next semester. I will actually lose my shit otherwise. Have you ever called a teacher “mom”? I think I have by accident before. I still call an old teacher that's now a family friend "2nd Mom" sometimes. What is your favorite arcade game? Idk what are "normal" ones. Oh, well, do crane machines count? So rigged, but they're fun. Do you feel neglected? No, for the most part. Those most important in my life are doing everything to make sure I can handle the "real" world one day. What school subject(s) are/were your best? English, art, and science. Are you allergic to grass? No. Do you remember to water plants? I don't have any. What season is your birthday in? Winter. Name 3 creative people you know. Sara, Connie, and Emma to name just a few. Name 3 YouTubers you aspire to be like. Markiplier for work ethic, creativity, compassion, wisdom, determination, etc. etc. etfuckingc., Shane Dawson for kindness, aaaaand uhhhh Arin Hanson for how down-to-earth and chill he is behind his goofy exterior. What color was your first car? Haven't had my first one yet. What year did you graduate? 2014. When was the last time you saw the person you currently have feelings for? Not since early February. Have you ever been scammed? Ummmm idk, maybe? Are you allergic to pollen? Yes. What style of wedding dress do you like best? Ballgown. Are you over your first love? Yes. Do you talk on the phone a lot? No. Would you rather call or text? Text, big time. Do you always answer your phone? Most times. When was the last time you went to a party? Nicole didn't really have a "party," nor did Sara, so technically my nephew's birthday in August. What was the last thing you ate? A bagel. What’s the last book you checked out from the library? I couldn't tell you. Do you have a twitter? Yeah, but I post nothing. It only exists to like Mark's shit lmao. How often do you travel outside of the state/province you live in? Not often at all. What’s a hobby you used to have, but don’t anymore? Sigh, reading. Why is your least favorite season your least favorite? It's too goddamn hot and humid as FUCK and all the insects are out. Do you have a Netflix account? Yes. Have you ever had an animal get into your attic? No. Where is your favorite place to go on vacation? Honestly, I can't even tell you. I've been on so, so few vacations, and those I have are almost exclusively to the beach, which I don't like. How long does it take to get there? The beach is ~2+ hours depending on which one we're going to. When was the last time you started a “new chapter” of your life? When I fully let Jason go, I guess. I don't think I've had a massive change since then. What room in your home do you spend the least amount of time in? I never go into my sister's old room. What is the last random act of kindness you did? Don't drag me for playing WoW please okay. But anyway me and another player were heading to an old raid, and I flew to the spawn point of an incredibly rare mob that drops a mount to see if it was up; he was, and the guy was super thankful I checked for him (I already had it, so it wasn't for my own benefit). Do you do anything to reduce the amount of electricity you use? I do the opposite, really... as much as I hate that. I learned to finally keep the lights on in the room I'm in to combat depression, and after finding that it truly works well (if you have depression, seriously, LIGHT THAT ROOM UP), if it's even SLIGHTLY darker without it, that ceiling light's going on. Then at night, Mom likes me to keep the living room light on so it looks like more people are home (it's for safety). Are you usually open to trying a new food that you aren’t familiar with? No. When was the last time you wished time would move faster? Like... every day for a long, long time now. I just want to have a job or be in school. I want to make progress towards a successful future. I know that's an extremely unhealthy desire to want to zoom through each day, but it's hard to cherish every, identical day lately. Are there any owls in your room (as decor, of course)? No. Have you ever heard voices? Audibly? I don't think so. Do you believe in angels and demons? I don't really know. I know there's life after death, but like, I don't know if your soul is "categorized." Who is the worst neighbor you have ever had? I can't really get into that as I don't know the full story... If you’re not straight, who was the first person you came out to? Sara. She's the one who talked me through the revelation. Where did you meet your first crush? We went to the same school. Happiness. What is a decision you’ve made that changed your entire life? Letting Jason become everything. Do you ever wonder what kind of person you’d have turned out to be if a certain event never happened to you? I wonder quite a bit who I'd be if the breakup never happened. When you’re home alone, do you still shower with the bathroom door closed? No. Even when someone is home, I keep it cracked so it doesn't get so humid. If you could have anyone’s singing voice, whose would you choose? Uhhhhh would any female not choose Amy Lee. What are your top 3 favorite genres of music? Metal, rock, indie. What’s the most expensive thing you’ve bought that turned out to be a waste of money? I have no clue. What’s something you’ve bought that turned out to be way more useful than you anticipated? I also don't know. Have you ever been on a ship? No, just boats. Do you ever take intentional breaks from checking/posting on social media? No. Who was Van Halen’s better singer - David Lee Roth, or Sammy Hagar? David. Which fictional character has the most memorable quotes? I'd have to think way too long on this. ACTUALLY. Maybe the Cheshire cat, off the top of my head. What’s a class you did not take in school, but now wish you had? None. Have you ever been to either of your parents’ workplaces? Yeah. What do you think of the ‘Healthy At Every Size’ movement/philosophy? ACTUALLY fuck off. Coming from someone who is overweight, get out of here with that shit. Don't normalize an unhealthy body. Have you ever been bitten so hard that their teeth marks were there after? Uh, other than in a sexual context, I don't think so, no. WAIT NO I bit my sister's back so hard as a kid that she bled, so probably. Ever been given a hickey? (Love bite) Well read above. Ever gave one? Yeah. Are you more of an outgoing type or shy type? I'm shy as fuck. Do you think it's weird if guys wear make-up like eyeliner? If you do think it is, I want nothing to do with your ass. It's 2019. Are you self conscious? If so what are you self conscious about? More than words can explain. My awkwardness, stuttering, lack of comfort with eye contact, and my body. Are you flirty at all? In certain instances with an s/o. Are you racist at all? No. Would you ever date a disabled person? (Be honest) It depends on the disability. With my own issues, I need to be able to handle theirs. If you found a baby randomly by itself what would you do? Call the police. Would you rather adopt or have your own child? If I was to have kids, I'd rather them be my own or wife's if I'm with a woman. But again, I don't want kids period. What would you class as cheating on someone? As soon as you're hiding shit regarding another person from your partner. Do you try to be politically correct? Only to a certain degree. What’s your favorite kind of sea critter? That's hard. I love seahorses, sea turtles, jellyfish, dolphins, whales... Have you ever tasted locally-made honey before? I don't think so. As far as earrings go, would you rather wear hoops or studs? Studs. Do you find P.E. humiliating, or think schools shouldn’t teach it? It wasn't humiliating, at least back then when I had a healthy body. I have mixed emotions about its mandatory status... Like, exercise should absolutely be encouraged, but P.E. classes tend to be entirely inflexible in regards to accommodating different people's limits and conditions. Do you recycle? Sadly no. We have to drive to the dump in order to, and Mom got tired of it. Are you interested in current world issues? Not even nearly as much as I should. Do you think you are mature, or immature? It depends on the situation. What kind of career are you interested in? It'd be great if I could survive just off of photography, but odds are I won't be able to. So I'm trying to go back to college and major in zoology to be an out-on-the-field zoologist. Do you own a pair of sunglasses? No. Do you use bobby pins, hair clips, or elastic hair ties? Which? None; my hair is really short. When it was long, I used hair ties. How badly do you get acne? (If at all) I don't anymore, just the occasional pimple usually around that time of the month. What’s the best way to cope with a breakup? YOU ARE ASKING THE WRONG PERSON. If someone dislikes you, what is most likely to be the reason? For those who don't know me thoroughly, I wouldn't be even remotely surprised if someone thought I was a lazy freeloader going nowhere. I feel like most people think that anyway because I'm going through hell to get a job, don't have friends, and am not back in school yet. How many text messages do you have in your inbox atm? No unread ones. When was the last time you had a difficult decision to make? Last week or so when I deeply debated on whether or not to get rid of Kaiju (my juvenile don't-touch-me iguana). If you could design your own mug, what would you put on it? Idk. Rainbow meerkat pawprints going up in a spiral around the cup? First thing that came to mind. What is the best beach you’ve been to? I've only been to two (I think), and I don't care enough about beaches or remember well enough to answer this. What is one thing you physically can’t do? There is no way in Heaven or Hell I could clean up vomit without hurling myself. Have you ever been to a funeral? Yes. Have you ever visited your state’s capitol building? No. Have you ever visited your nation’s capitol building? No. Do/did you have a favorite seat in church? No. What is your favorite park? Disney World, of course. Have you ever felt an earthquake? No. Do you chew gum regularly? No. Where did you go on your first train ride? N/A Do you know anyone with a dual citizenship? Most likely. What sports teams do you root for, if any? (Extra points for Boston fans.) None, really. I grew up automatically biased to the Carolina Hurricanes in hockey thanks to Dad, but I don't actually care. Do you dunk your cookies in milk? Oreos, preferably. Others, sometimes. What is something you are confident about? My knowledge of meerkats. Have you ever been physically addicted to a substance? What? I don't really know if this "counts" as it was the product of severe anxiety over vomiting, but in middle school, I would constantly think I was going to be sick and took one Peptobismol literally everyday at school, usually in I think second period when my anxiety was bad enough. It finally ended when we ran out and I had to go without it and I saw I was okay. I was so happy when that shit ended. How do you feel about needles? Eh. The feeling is obviously unpleasant, but they don't bother me much; not at all for tattoos. Getting shots or blood drawn is a bit more "ew" because of the needle's length. But anyway, in general, needles are okay. What is your favorite accent to listen to? Maybe French for women, British for men. Or British for both, idk. What was the reason you last got dressed up? Went job hunting with my VR coach. Have you ever been the subject of cruel rumors? Not really cruel, no. ^ What were they? N/A Do you prefer loose or form-fitting clothing? Give me skinny jeans on everyone. What do you do when you are really, really mad? Be WAY too impulsive about what comes out of my mouth. And I cry. Would you rather go naked than wear fur? Omfg don't do this. I guess wear fur. I hate my body too much. But I'd feel absolutely godawful. Do you put a line through your 7's? Yes. ^ What about your Z's? Yes. What is one thing that someone could do to you that is unforgivable? More than anything else, rape. Are you able to forgive and forget? It's rare I'm unable to forgive, but forget? Nope. Do you like broccoli and cheese? Oh my god in Heaven, yes. What about potatoes and cheese? Yeah. Have you written a letter by hand, lately? To whom? Not lately. Toaster or toaster oven? I've only ever had a toaster oven. I like how you can see if something is starting to burn, anyway. What are you most known for? Likes meerkats more than she likes 99% of the human population. I keep my worship of Mark Fischfuckface on the down low irl so meerkats win overall. Do you have any reputations? What are they? I don't think so. Do you wear band shirts? Yeah. ^ What band was on the last one you wore? Uh... shit. I think Metallica? It's rare I have to put on "real" clothes now (yes, I stay in pjs all day bc I never leave the house), so idrk. Do you own any hats? Describe them. No. What about masks, you got any? Describe those. No. What was the last thing to leave you speechless? Watching the spire of the Cathedral collapse yesterday. That whole thing broke my heart. I know the serious valuables were saved, but still, there was so much damage to 800 years of incredible art and history. Do your parents like your friends? If they don’t, why not? I have like... one irl, serious friend. They both love him. Have you been called a bad influence? Yes. As if she wasn't an awful one. Describe your favorite pair of socks. They're covered in meerkats. :'D Thanks, big sister. Have you experienced any life-changing news, events, etc, lately? No. Have any self-done piercings? No, not doing that shit. Is talking to strangers enjoyable for you, or stressful? It's anxiety-inducing as hell. How do you feel about getting new neighbors? Idc. How many ceiling fans are in your home? None. Do you tweet your life away? I don't use it. How do you feel about shameless self promoting? Ever since actually trying to get out in the freelance photography world, I get it, as uncomfortable as it is. HOWEVER, there are absolutely places where doing it is inappropriate. When reading words. like. this. do. you always pause after the periods? Yeah. What about screaming when reading something IN ALL CAPS? Yeah.

i didn’t know where to post this -- here or on my other blog where i’ve moved my fandom ramblings but i’ve decided to put it here since it kind of touches on more personal topics/feelings. jk i wrote it all out and i didn’t really touch too much on personal stuff so into the fandom blog it goes. also putting it under a read more bc it ended up being pretty damn long wow
recently had a sort of issue/not-issue on twitter where i kind of openly expressed my dislike for this one character. no essay backing up why i dislike them, but i do have my (valid) reasons and i tend to be kind of semi-serious w my hate so i didn’t think too much abt swinging my opinions around. and also since this twitter is a recent development, i’m more used to tumblr where even if you openly express an opinion, you have a ton of character space to utilize to explain your opinion so you tend to explain yourself anyway unlike twitter’s limited character tweets where you basically just express your opinion and that’s it. anyway i might have gotten a little carried away since i don’t really interact w anyone in fandoms anymore and only w my fam member who we enable each others’ opinions and put my opinion on my bio and i think that along w my tweet trail led to potentially being vagued abt by a twitter account that mostly posts abt that fandom. i still have reason to suspect that /i/ wasn’t the sole target of the vagueing (if even) bc they said some stuff abt this character’s negative opinion that apparently someone expressed that /i/ never overtly said (like he’s evil and bad simply bc of how he treats this one person but i never said that, just implied that he’s a general asshole and maybe his relationship w this one person isn’t as good as i’ve seen previously from the fandom which is what i’ve deduced from reading canon content). since they never mentioned names or twitter handles explicitly, i purposely made some tweets (still being open, no censoring on purpose) to try to get a direct response and also low-key targeting the vaguers (out of my paranoia that they were indeed talking abt me which honestly prob not but also it’s a relatively small eng-speaking fandom involved w this character so they have to have stumbled upon me at one point). i did get a response (not from the vaguer(s)) from someone calling me out for not censoring my open dislike of this one character. but i also suspect they knew abt my dislike of this one character stemming from their interactions w another character bc they started talking abt shipping even though i never mentioned a ship in those tweets (but i did mention the latter character though not in conjunction w the former). anyway i felt the familiar heat of embarrassment upon seeing that notif of their callout but i almost immediately felt better abt the entire situation bc i finally got the direct callout i was waiting for and i knew what i needed to take down. direct and clear action
in hindsight after i made a series of vagueing tweets last night lol i feel like this entire situation is just me creating unnecessary drama and wildly hitting even ppl not even involved at all (as noted by the callout which was supposedly having non-involved randos in mind) just to make myself feel better or something which isn’t really respectful in any way (and i was totally open abt me just swinging wildly after the callout and my ensuing taking down of posts. this isn’t even a private twitter where ig it’s apparently socially acceptable to talk abt shit like that). and also makes me think maybe i never really learned anything from being online for almost my entire life. a weird part of me has always wanted to become fandom-famous online but i’ve never succeeded in doing so nor have i made an online group of friends i can bounce my opinions and headcanons off of. so i’ve never really developed an online community, i’ve always just been on the fringes and yelling into the mass without getting much attention. now ik that apparently twitter does indeed chuck your opinions well into that mass (good and bad i suppose), it’s a bit surprising to actually get “attention” ... i also mentioned this in my tweets last night but i really really dislike getting vagued abt which my psychoanalyzing brain was like “that’s bc you don’t like not knowing what others think abt you irl” and yeah if you got an issue w me i’d prefer you to tell it directly to my face rather than pretend you like me (which is totally hypocritical bc i do the latter to others but also i tend to just swerve ppl i dislike so it’s not like i go out of my way to pretend to be nice to them).
idk where i was trying to go w this bc now that i’m writing it out i’m like wow yeah i’m still in the wrong huh. sometimes i am in the wrong like years ago when i got called out for grossly shipping irl ppl (which yes i will admit i did do once upon a time but now i no longer do it or am ok w it) but i don’t feel like i was in the wrong this time so i just feel a little frustrated abt the vagueing bc if i was part of the group they were vagueing abt then i was definitely painted as someone w no critical thinking skills which i do, i just don’t share their opinion which they think is right (and tbh i wonder if THEY have critical thinking skills bc they said some things in defense of their opinion which i don’t agree with esp if you’re interpreting canon content like that. are we even reading the same content). i do genuinely feel better abt the series now bc before i was literally anxiety whenever i thought of or even saw the related characters. my fam member was trying to talk abt the series to me and they weren’t even talking abt the related characters but i just wasn’t feeling it bc of this whole situation which i literally made abt me even though there was no indication whatsoever it was abt me. this all make me think that i really should take a good fucking long break from fandoms and social media bc it just gives me unneeded stress and anxiety abt cancel culture, trying to be likeable enough to become fandom-famous, seeing hot takes, etc etc. i’ve already been winding down in terms of strongly interacting w fandoms but my mental health has not been doing so hot recently bc of irl things and fandoms are not ameliorating it at all. ik for some fandoms do indeed make ppl feel better but that’s when ppl actually interact w them and they’re not stuck in a bubble of no response whatsoever while ppl may potentially gab abt them outside of that bubble. my issue is that i always feel the need to create when i really get into a fandom and when you create you want ppl to respond to your creations! so you need to interact w the fandom. but then i then want to actually interact w the fandom fr instead of just posting from time to time and staying out of it and you know where that gets me sometimes. i think it’s bc i had a good time in the pjo and warriors fandoms and i want something like that again in new fandoms i’m in but for whatever reason that’s not how it is now.
i didn’t jump into the vagueing tweet mess bc as i said i wasn’t directly called out and also better to just ignore it but i couldn’t get it out of my head. and that’s making me really consider leaving fandom social media and just create fanworks solely for myself without even posting them online. my works don’t really get much response anyway which is fine tbh even having 1 like these days is good enough so it’s not like i’d be losing out. but idk man ... sometimes you just want to share stuff w others. maybe i should just make my own website and put stuff on there w no expectation for likes or whatever. this has also made me re-evaluate whether or not i really do want to go into art professionally. ik this one situation is inevitable w putting your opinion out on the internet and i wasn’t even in the wrong i feel bc it’s not like i have a problematic opinion (racism, sexism, incest, etc) but it has put a damper on creating content to put online even if the content i eventually want to create is original and is in no way associated w fandoms. even as i write that out i realize it’s kind of stupid to have such a damper put on me. i should watch spiderverse again bc that was the film that really inspired me to create my own creative visual content again and also i’ve been feeling really uninspired lately. ik i shouldn’t let this kind of stuff get me down if i really want to create art in the future but it’s hard to deal w sometimes. honestly i really should be seeing a therapist but also wow now it’s delving into more personal territory so i’ll end it here.
tl;dr i need to learn how to chill on the internet and i think i need to create boundaries for fandoms fr and stick w those boundaries for the benefit of my mental health. maybe i shouldn’t have gotten a twitter in the first place lol even if all i made it for originally was just so i could message a proxy on twitter and not to actually get involved in fandom twitter. i didn’t even get the proxied good in the end anyway bc i was forced to cancel the payment by a third party bc the proxy had not sent me the good in months despite them updating relatively regularly on how busy they were as a student. hah that just how it be
also side note i was like to myself “ok you need to chill bc these series’ characters aren’t real. there’s no need to get so worked up over them” but then i realized even that opinion is “problematic” bc there are ppl out there who really use the characters as like idk a therapy object and i’m genuinely not trying to be an asshole i just forgot the specific wording you use. so even if i’m like ‘they’re fake’ there are others who are like ‘no they make me feel better so don’t hate !!’ which idk is a mentality which i think ppl should shift away from bc you can’t be in fandoms forever unless you’re a professional fictional content creator which is also an opinion i think a good number of ppl would disagree w (“they’re not bothering anyone and it’s their life so what are you to say what they should do??”). idk this is my hot take for the day i guess but it’s fine to be a fan of stuff as you grow up but i think it should become less of a focus/active part in your life as you grow older. i mean maybe that’s a cynical way of seeing things bc maybe creating fanwork is a good de-stressor for ppl but i think i feel that way bc i’m not going into creative content professionally career-wise but ... idk what i’m trying to say here. i guess i just have complicated thoughts on fandoms in general.
#my personal and this tumblr are good bc it's the parts of the internet where i can write shit out like this and i don't have irl ppl seeing#i have someone ik irl following my twitter so it's kind of weird to do the vagueing tweets i did last night bc they were like what's up w#that and i'm like i don't really wanna talk abt it w you#personal#rant#i wouldn't characterize this as a rant tbh but i have no other blog tags to put this under

Britney Spears, 20 years ago
Will Roland in Be More Chiil
Cast of Mean Girls
Andrew Barth Feldman in Dear Evan Hansen
Isabelle McCalla and Caitlin Kinnunen as high school girlfriends in The Prom
“I’m not a girl, not yet a woman…I’m in between,” Britney Spears sang some two decades ago, and it could almost be the new anthem (gender-adjusted) for Broadway. The opening of Be More Chill this week adds yet another to the New York stage shows that focus on teenage characters (mostly portrayed by non-teenage performers), many of which attract a large teenage audience. These include Dear Evan Hansen, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Mean Girls, and, yes, ok, Wicked. (The Prom has a dual focus; and the audience for, if not the characters in, Frozen skew younger.) Teen angst has made its way Off-Broadway as well, with Superhero.
Shows about teens and tweens are hardly new: 13, Bye Bye Birdie, Carrie, Hairspray, Matilda, Newsies, School of Rock, Spring Awakening come to mind. But we’re seeing a particular trend now, and not an especially welcome one. It’s of course a good thing to broaden the demographics of the Broadway audience, and at least one of these shows is widely viewed as of high quality. Yet their focus is largely on angst and on stereotypes. How accurate or fair are the depictions of teenagers in these shows? Yes, high school may be a time when some people are trying out identities, and too many of them might like to assign reductive labels to their classmates or even to themselves. But surely this is not the full picture, nor a constructive one. As I say in my review of Be More Chill, the actual high school students we see regularly in the news are taking the lead in attacking such crucial problems as climate change and gun control — problems that have stalemated adults.
Incidentally, “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman,” along with “Baby One More Time,” Spear’s first pop single when she was 17 years old, are likely to be two of the 23 songs from her repertorie that will be in the new musical “Once Upon a One More Time” aiming for Broadway, announced today. The book, thankfully, is not about teen angst. (For more details, see Week in NY Theater News, below.)

THE B-SIDE: “Negro Folklore from Texas State Prisons,” A Record Album Interpretation
In “The B-Side,” three men sing along with an album on a record-player — or, as people prefer to say these days, a vinyl on the turntable. But there’s a reason why the Wooster Group’s encore presentation of its simple and odd hour-long piece, first performed at the Performing Garage in 2017, is filling St. Ann’s Warehouse every night. The album is “Negro Folklore from Texas State Prisons”…
Austin Scott as Alexander Hamilton and Carvens Lissaint as George Washington, the new cast members of “Hamilton” on Broadway.
Hamilton on Broadway 2019: New Cast, New Clarity
I recently saw Hamilton again on Broadway, during a rare open captioned performance, and it was a revelation in several ways.
I would love to see this show but there are not enough OC performances for those of us who want to attend. It’s nice to pat yourself on the back about access, but the reality is that an occasional Wednesday OC performance with limited tickets is not access. #captionallshows

The Cake Review: “This is Us” writer on Christian baker’s Lesbian wedding dilemma
In “The Cake,” Debra Jo Rupp (the mother on “That 70s Show”) portrays Della, a Christian baker in North Carolina who refuses to bake a cake for a lesbian wedding. If the story is inspired by the Supreme Court case decided last year, Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, playwright Bekah Brunstetter, who is a writer for “This Is Us,” makes it personal in several ways…One of the future brides, Jen (Genevieve Angelson), is the daughter of Della’s best friend, who died five years ago. Della, who is childless, views Jen like a daughter…Bekah Brunstetter has told interviewers that she wrote “The Cake” as a way to explain her support for gay rights and same-sex marriage to her parents. Her father, Peter Brunstetter, is a Republican politician from North Carolina who supported an anti-gay state bill that defined marriage as between a man and a woman.
Be More Chill on Broadway
Somebody wrote “NYC Loves BMC” in chalk on the sidewalk outside Broadway’s Lyceum Theater, the new home of “Be More Chill,” the high energy, high decibel pop-rock musical that stars Will Roland as a self-proclaimed high school “loser” who swallows a pill containing a supercomputer and becomes cool. I tweeted a picture of the scrawled public love note; the tweet was retweeted nearly a hundred times. “Be More Chill” has some seriously devoted fans, most of whom seem to be 15 years old. It’s a thrill to see such teenaged enthusiasm for live theater. I wish I could share more fully in their ardor for this show

Twenty-three of Britney Spears’ songs will form the score for a new Broadway-aiming musical, “Once Upon a One More Time” with will have a try-out in Chicago from October to December of this year. “Once Upon A Time… Cinderella, Snow White, and the other fairytale princesses gather for their book club, when – oh, baby baby! – a rogue fairy godmother drops The Feminine Mystique into their corseted laps, spurring a royal revelation.” The Times reports that the run at the Chicago theater “had been set aside for “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough,” a Michael Jackson jukebox musical that canceled its Chicago plans on the eve of an HBO documentary detailing abuse allegations against the pop star. That show’s producers say they are still hoping to come to Broadway.”

Daveed DIggs is back in New York, for the play White Noise at the Public Theater, and he’s happier to be here than last time.
The last few years I have had not a great relationship with New York, but this time feels really good. The Hamilton experience here was so intense, and it became a pretty stressful place for me to be. That was a show that, at the bottom of it, it’s a bunch of friends getting together and making rap songs. I was involved with that show for a long time because my friend wrote it and asked me to come along for the ride. Everything on the inside of it felt very small, and everything on the outside of it felt very big.
…I love performing in smaller houses. I think you get a different kind of connection there. I’m excited to be doing any play, period, after spending a couple years being in front of a camera. This is a very welcome return. You get a different kind of intimacy in a small space, and I think everybody gets to know each other a little better.
As much as I loved performing on Broadway, I don’t care if I ever do that again. I like telling stories in places where everyone is part of the storytelling.
Oskar Eustis and Suzan-Lori Parks chat with one another about their new collaboration as director and playwright, White Noise, It begins: Oskar Eustis doesn’t believe in giving audiences a heads-up. “When you have a trigger warning, you’re implying that people need to be protected from pain,” says Eustis, the artistic director of New York’s Public Theater. “I think real art says, ‘No, you don’t. What you need is the chance to face it.’”
If you’re working on a play– especially a new one– and you’re not checking in with your ushers on a regular basis during previews, you don’t actually know how it’s going.

My favorite line: “Get that EXT/INT shit outta there! Dead giveaway your “play” is a pilot.”
Play Formatting PSA: In undergrad one of the 1st things Donald Margulies did was teach us proper play formatting. Which felt like a huge bummer. Shouldn’t it be story first? Who cares about formatting?! Don’t you see that l WILL CHANGE THE FORM, WITH THE POWER OF ART? 1
But now that I’ve done a ton of reading committees, I can see he was right. In the same way you wouldn’t show up to a job interview dressed wrong for the job, when I’m reading a ton of plays my first cut rejections boil down to, “Does this manuscript LOOK like a play or not?” 2/
And the most screwed up thing is that published plays don’t look like manuscript-form plays, so you can’t just learn by picking up an acting edition at the bookstore or your submission’ll look weird. To wit, a thread about formatting. ARE YOU EXCITED?? 3/
A full-length play is approx 100 pgs in length (50 pgs per act). Sure your length may vary. You may have a lean 75 pg straight-through-no-intermission piece or a 120 pg 2-act that “should read really really fast”
Now the formatting nitty gritty! *character names in all caps & centered *dialogue left-justified *in-dialogue stage directions like “(she exits)” should be in parentheses and italics *longer stage directions should be tabbed in and (optionally) italicized 10/
New scenes get their own line (i.e. “Scene 1”) – bolded and numbered *Get that EXT/INT shit outta there! Dead giveaway your “play” is a pilot. *Start a new pg for each scene *End the act on an all-caps “END OF ACT 1” “END OF PLAY” etc – and bold it too cuz that feels GREAT 11/

Celebs stop being polite, start getting real with fans on Twitter
Don’t come for Ellen Pompeo, Cher, and Olivia Wilde on Twitter. They are among the stars keeping it real about politics on social media. (Photo: Getty Images)
Attention Twitter trolls: Celebrities aren’t taking any of your you-know-what.
While once upon a time stars were advised not to ruffle feathers by expressing political views (or other topics deemed controversial) for fear of hurting their brand, that time has passed. Following Donald Trump’s controversial election win, which only a handful of Hollywooders were excited about it (see: Scott Baio), and the unpopular decisions he’s made since he’s taken office, we’ve entered what can only be described as the “take no crap” era. Celebs aren’t having it in any way, shape, or form.
While some famous folks have always clapped back at their trolls, we’ve seen even more come out swinging recently. And they’ve moved past the polite “unfollow me” response. Things have escalated to: Don’t like me or what I’m saying? Don’t be my fan. Don’t watch my show. Don’t go see my movie.
May we point you in the direction of Ellen Pompeo‘s feed. On Monday, the Grey’s Anatomy star didn’t pull any punches when she tweeted to her 1.3 million fans: “News flash I don’t want Trump supporters for fans. Einstein.”
News flash… I don't want trump supporters for fans Einstein https://t.co/cjJTlZKPpn
— Ellen Pompeo (@EllenPompeo) September 11, 2017
It started when the TV star, 47, shared a story about an 8-year-old biracial boy being the victim of an apparent lynching.
No such thing As racism anymore right????? #gof*ckyoselvestrumpsupporters #especiallythewomen https://t.co/tWVlOhdkMf
— Ellen Pompeo (@EllenPompeo) September 11, 2017
The hashtags that Pompeo, whose three children are mixed-race, used must have gotten folks riled up (again, she wasn’t pulling punches, using “#gof*ckyourselvestrumpsupporters” and “#especiallythewomen”). But she was in a “don’t come at me” kind of space.
you cannot support a racist and not be one yourself.. not sure why you even like me? I have a completely different set of values https://t.co/bUznnENxVX
— Ellen Pompeo (@EllenPompeo) September 11, 2017
Her blunt replies led to some followers questioning whether she was hacked. She wasn’t. As she explained, she’s just “straight savage when it comes to doing the right thing.”
No No no this is me.. no chill.. straight savage when it comes to doing the right thing https://t.co/HQT8WwTy63
— Ellen Pompeo (@EllenPompeo) September 11, 2017
Pompeo has become more politically outspoken than her early days on her doctor drama. She was vocal about getting people to the polls prior to the election and obviously even more so after Hillary Clinton’s loss. Who can forget her headline-making tweet to Ivanka Trump about Jared Kushner? Not us. But, hey, it fits with the whole “straight savage” thing.
Olivia Wilde, who’s currently starring in 1984 on Broadway, has long been politically outspoken — and has protested several times this year, including outside Trump Tower in NYC in August after the president defended the actions of white supremacists, Neo-Nazis, and the KKK in Charlottesville, Va. It was around that time that the actress, whose mom Leslie Cockburn is running for congress in Virginia, addressed “Trumpy Trolls” who had apparently been hassling her — and threatening to boycott her work.
Trumpy Trolls defending racism as free speech and threatening to boycott my movies, PLEASE FUCKING DO.
— olivia wilde (@oliviawilde) August 18, 2017
Not only did she tell them to go ahead and boycott her movies, Wilde, who has 1.85 million Twitter followers, did so along with the middle finger emoji. Nothing ambiguous there.
And then there’s Cher. Let’s be honest, the badass songstress has never been one to be shy about her thoughts on any topic, but a recent tweet got a lot of pickup. After taking to Twitter to defend the Dreamers and urge “those who can” among her 3.4 million followers to “take a DREAMER in 2 their home and protect them,” as she plans to do, one Twitter user wrote, “Sure you will Cher. I’ll believe it when I see it.” The “Turn Back Time” singer shot back, “Then keep your eyes open, b**ch.”
Then keep your eyes open bitch
— Cher (@cher) September 5, 2017
For the record, her reply has nearly 100,000 likes.
Don Cheadle is another star who frequently takes on critics in the social media space. The actor — and political news hound — has called fans out for being “woefully uninformed.”
You are woefully uninformed and egregiously bereft of empathy and insight. But other than that … https://t.co/sRlqfuqrns
— Don Cheadle (@DonCheadle) September 9, 2017
Cheadle, who has 546,00 followers, isn’t afraid to get down and dirty during an exchange. (He told one follower to, um, eat a d**k.) And this tweet gives some insight into why he’s OK with potentially losing fans — namely, because his political beliefs matter more to him than fandom.
If I lose fans over this, they weren't real fans. And I'm only bitter about what's happening to our country. You good with all this? Why? https://t.co/3n1AXRHexJ
— Don Cheadle (@DonCheadle) May 31, 2017
Of course, not all stars are using social media as a platform. You may remember Mark Wahlberg in 2016 saying that “a lot of celebrities did, do, and shouldn’t” discuss their personal politics. He went so far as to say many celebrities are “pretty out of touch with the common person.” (He has his own golf course in his backyard, so he should know.)
We asked Art Markman, PhD, a professor of psychology at the University of Texas, Austin, what he thinks about this trend of celebs clapping back, and he noted that there’s been a “clear societal shift in expectations about the behaviors of public figures.”
“First, when it comes to social media, people assume they are sending posts (and tweets) into the void,” he tells Yahoo. “So, if a celebrity ignores the tweet or post, then it is easy to assume the celebrity just didn’t see it. For those people who feel strongly about an issue, more direct engagement is a way of making sure that people recognize that they were heard.”
As for celebs and their take no crap attitudes: “There is a clear societal shift in expectations about the behaviors of public figures,” Markman says. “When Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks made her comment about George W. Bush in 2003, it was shocking, because that was a period in which celebrities were often quiet about their personal political beliefs. There have been periods in which celebrities have been quite vocal. The 1960s had a lot of celebrity activism around race and equality. The late 1980s had activism about AIDS and gay rights. We have entered another era in which many celebrities (on the right and left) are taking to social media to support causes.”
Though there could be financial repercussions. “These interactions may turn off some of a celebrity’s fans,” Markman adds. “We are becoming increasingly polarized as a society, and that has begun to influence the entertainment people watch in addition to the political parties they support.”
But that’s a risk these stars apparently feel is worth taking. And cheers to them for staying true to their personal convictions.

EXCLUSIVE: Aaron Carter Breaks Down in Tears Over Arrest, Reveals What Drugs He Takes
brightcove
Aaron Carter is telling his side of the story when it comes to his arrest in Habersham County, Georgia, on Saturday night.
The 29-year-old singer sat down with ET on Tuesday, clearly still feeling emotional about his arrest on charges of DUI refusal, possession of marijuana less than one ounce and possession of drug related objects. Carter cried as he talked about how he's spent the last four days, and said he hasn't slept since Saturday.
"Basically, I've been listening to America and Stevie Wonder and the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack," Carter tells ET's Jennifer Peros about how he's coping.
WATCH: EXCLUSIVE -- Aaron Carter Fires Back at Brother Nick's Tweet After Arrest -- 'Why Wouldn't He Call Me Directly?'
Carter explains that before his arrest, he and girlfriend Madison Parker were in North Carolina for a club appearance on Friday, and he decided to buy a cheap car to avoid wasting money on rentals. He explains he has severe anxiety over flying, due to his experience on Sept. 11, 2001.
"I opened for Michael Jackson Sept. 9 and 10 in 2001 -- we all left the morning of Sept. 11 and watched the Trade Centers get hit across the Hudson River, and I saw it with my own eyes and I saw people jumping out of the buildings and burned," Carter shares.
Carter says the car he bought was in bad shape, and that he couldn't even lock the doors, so he guarded his girlfriend in the car throughout the night on Friday. After missing his show with Flo Rida in Kansas City, Missouri, on Saturday, Carter says he turned around to head to Alabama, and that's when he stopped at an AutoZone in Georgia to fix his alignment after getting a new tire.
"Somebody said I was driving recklessly on the road, that's what the police report said, but the alignment was off on my car, so I went to AutoZone to see if I could do anything about it," Carter explains. "A motorcyclist reported that I was swerving all over the road, but the alignment was off a little bit on the new tire."
Carter says police approached him inside the AutoZone in Georgia.
"[They] forcefully grabbed me out," he claims. "[I] stepped outside. I say, 'I invoke the right to speak to my attorney,' and they disregarded that, they revoked that immediately. They said, 'Is there anything illegal in the car?' I said, 'I have marijuana in the car.'"
"I kept trying to explain the whole situation, to the officer," he shares. "He said, 'You're a professional, right? I'm a professional too, so be quiet.' And then I said, 'OK.'"
Carter claims he wasn't under the influence of any alcohol or drugs.
"I do not drink alcohol at all," he adds, saying he has a medical condition that prevents him from doing so. However, he admits he will occasionally sip beer.
"I'll occasionally have a sip of a beer or something like that, but I can't even drink IPAs," he clarifies. "I can't drink anything like that. I have to drink the lightest beer possible that's not hoppy. I don't drink any hard liquor."
Carter says the last time he had smoked marijuana was nine hours earlier before the incident with police. He says he smokes marijuana for his anxiety, chronic pain and to increase his appetite.
Carter says he's also on pain medication due to a jaw injury, which he has since stopped taking, and stresses that he is not taking any other drugs.
"No. Nothing. Zero. I am willing to do a polygraph test," he says. "I take Xanax, Propranolol for high blood pressure medication, and I took oxycodones for my mouth."
Carter has a message for fans claiming he needs help for drug addiction.
"It hurts real bad because people don't know me, and I have no control over it, and this is the way I am," he says. "I have a medical condition. When I was 19 years old, I got an endoscopy done in Tennessee and I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia. The doctor told me I have to keep stress out of my life, or else it's gonna take a toll on me and I can develop cancer."
"I don't need help," he continues. "What I need is for people to understand that I'm human and that I make mistakes just like every other human in this world, but I would never risk my life or my girlfriend's life."
NEWS: Aaron Carter Goes on Twitter Rant After His Arrest -- 'Never Be Bullied Into Silence'
Carter also vehemently denies he's ever smoked meth, crack cocaine or taken heroin. He says his biggest mistake is trying ecstasy "a couple of times" when he was 16 years old.
"I do not drink," he again stresses. "Hire a polygraph person, a professional. Strap me up."
Watch the video below for more on Carter's arrest.

A Full Timeline of Iggy Azalea's Beefs, From Azealia Banks to Halsey
A Full Timeline of Iggy Azalea's Beefs, From Azealia Banks to Halsey
Although she hasn’t released an album in three years, Iggy Azalea’s name hasn’t been forgotten. Known for causing controversy — usually having to do with racial appropriation — the Australian rapper has beefed with everyone from Azealia Banks to Snoop Dogg.
We put together a complete history of all of her celebrity feuds from 2011 all the way up to Azalea’s latest beef with Halsey. Check out the timeline below.
September 9, 2011
Days before the release of her debut mixtape Ignorant Art Iggy releases a video for her song “D.R.U.G.S.” In the video she sings over the beat of Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Look Out for Detox’, “When the relay starts, Im a runaway slave… Master, hitting on the past gotta spit it like a pastor.” This is an allusion to the lyric from his song, “When the relay starts, I’m a runaway slave.”
September 13, 2011
Iggy begins one sided beef with Kreayshawn on Twitter. She later responded and retweeted more negative statements.
October 9, 2011
Iggy claims that getting booed offstage at Canal Room in New York was the driving force for her career. After the show, she took to Twitter to address the alleged female haters. “It was kinda awkward cause this girl stood in the front row my entire set screaming ‘your pussy suckssss!!!’ ! Lol #whyyoumad.” The video from the show that night tells a different story however or a particularly happy crowd with only one male booing her at the 6:26 mark.
October 19, 2011
In a tweet that was later deleted Azealia Banks wrote, “how sexy is iggy azalea?? it’s kind of ridiculous … *tugs collar to let out steam*.” Starting out as a girl crush the feud with Banks will become one of Azalea’s worst.
October 20, 2011
Azealia Banks tweeted, “once wrote a song called ‘Barbie Shit,’ but nicki minaj blew up like the week after so i took it down, lololz. i felt corny. Also wrote a song called P-U-$-$-Y before Iggy Azalea.” Iggy responded with, “its NEVER been about who did it first… its ALWAYS been about who did it better.” Banks retweeted Iggy’s insult and wrote back, “i know right?? lmfaooo. haha.” And the beef begins.
In an interview not long after the tweet, Iggy reflects on the tweet claiming Banks said, “I’m next level, I had a song about being a Barbie before Nicki Minaj had a song about being a Barbie. Here’s the link to my song. And fuck Iggy Azalea, I had a song called ‘Pussy’ before she ever did. Here’s a link to my song. It’s better.” …essentially nothing like the original tweet.
October 21, 2011
Notorious for picking fights with anyone from Kedrick Lamar to Zayn Malik, Azealia Banks subtweets about Iggy. “I smell beef.”
December 2, 2011
When someone tweeted “Iggy Azelia Banks iz weird” Banks was fast to respond with “We’re two COMPLETELY different people hun. :-.” Iggy did not respond.
December 9, 2011
Iggy announces her new album’s title, The New Classic. Possibly directed toward Banks.
December 19, 2011
A$AP Rocky and Banks are spotted holding hands in New York. This puts fuel in the fire with Banks who grew up with A$AP and his crew in Harlem.
January 13, 2012
Iggy responds to claims about feud with Banks, “I have no deal with her. I don’t know her personally. I said it about Kreayshawn, too. If I don’t know you personally, how could I have a problem with you? What would I have a problem about? I don’t know that person … I don’t know you. I truly don’t understand it. I just keep making my own music, and I’m deaf to that. What is there to say? Nothing.”
January 17, 2012
Azealia Banks tweets, “Iggy Azalea’s hair looks really great in her new video. How long do you all reckon that hair is? 40″ in?”
January 18, 2012
Azealia Banks reportedly signs to Universal.
January 27, 2012
Iggy told Billboard that she signed to Interscope saying, “I’m super happy about it.” She made statements about other labels, mentioning Def Jam specifically, claiming they would’ve made her their “guinea pig.” She later claimed that Jimmy Iovine called her “the new Tupac.” She later tweeted, “Get used to me + jimmy [Iovine] smashing shit, cause thats the plan.” Keep in mind Interscope Records is owned by Universal, this will be relevant later.
January 31, 2012
Azealia Banks tweets, “You can never be a young BLACK girl enjoying her life and having fun. There’s always some shady, dishonest cracker looking to assassinate your character. No offense to anyone.” and later, “Ok. i apologize to anyone who was offended by that tweet. I shouldn’t generalize my personal issues. forgive me.” and later, “Why am i being criminalized for being myself?”
February 7, 2012
Iggy is the first female to be featured on the cover of XXL magazine for their Freshman List. Azealia was not having any of it, tweeting, “Iggy Azalea on the XXL freshman list is all wrong. How can you endorse a white woman who called herself a ‘runaway slave master’? Sorry guys, I’m pro black girl. I’m not anti white girl, but I’m also not here for any1 outside of my culture trying to trivialize very serious aspects of it.”
Iggy later tweets “You can’t block my blessings! Today I’m celebrating! Get with it or kick rocks!”
March 2, 2012
Azealia Banks announces she’s signed to Interscope/Polydor, take a guess who is also coincidentally signed to the label.
March 10, 2012
On DJ Drama’s radio show in Atlanta Iggy is asked about Azealia’s reaction to the XXL cover, “This is my day and it’s my achievement.” She said, “You have to work to have your own achievements, with all due respect.” TI who is now Iggy’s boss adds “Strategically if she really cares about a freshmen cover maybe she could hope that she’ll suck enough to get shelved and then next year when the freshmen cover comes back around, maybe she’ll still be a freshman.”
March 12, 2012
Iggy writes an open letter apologizing for her “runaway slave-master” lyric “It was a tacky and careless thing to say and if you are offended, I am sorry. Sometimes we get so caught up in our art and creating or trying to push boundaries, we don’t stop to think how others may be hurt by it. In this situation, I am guilty of doing that and I regret not thinking things through more.”
March 25, 2012
Azealia Bank’s releases alleged dis track about Iggy called “Fuck Up the Fun.”
March 27, 2012
Iggy’s then-suspected boyfriend A$AP Rocky says, “They got to cut it out. That’s some bullshit. Iggy is not racist. Trust me. Trust me. That’s petty for Azealia because … don’t pick on her cause she white. That’s a low blow.”
May 18, 2012
Rumors of Iggy being dropped by Interscope surface. Iggy claims that she was never on Interscope just manged by them despite a tweet on February 7 2012 that says “im managed and signed to Interscope.” Many had suspicions that Azealia was behind it.
April 23, 2013
Iggy shares the news of signing to Def Jam on Twitter. Take a look at a January 27, 2012 Billboard interview where she claimed Def Jam would’ve made her their “guinea pig.”
June 18, 2013
Iggy is questioned by radio host Sway Calloway about possible plastic surgery. She responds with, “Yes, eyelashes are real. I’ve heard a bunch of crazy things: that it’s my underpants. I heard I have implants, I hear all kinds of crazy stuff. It’s my flesh. It’s my butt.”
June 2013
Fans begin to uncover old racist Tweets and Iggy receives massive backlash. She claims that it is unfair because she was able to “joke” but because of her celebrity she is no longer able to. See a few of the tweets below:

When asked about using a “black voice” in an interview for the cover of Complex she responded with, “If you’re mad about it and you’re a black person then start a rap career and give it a go, too. I’m not taking anyone’s spot, so make yourself a mixtape. Or maybe if you’re black, start singing like a country singer and be a white person. I don’t know. Why is it such a big deal?”

Tyler the Creator is asked on 106 & Park which female artists he’d sleep with. When prompted about Iggy he says, “She stinks. She got shots in her thump. I want real booty. You feel me?” Iggy later tweeted, “Tyler the creator is beyond immature. I’ve always believed you had something more to offer the world, Shame to see you be so rude,” she said. “People that make enemies and talk shit about ppl they’ve never even said hi to trip me out. I see it all the time… Strange world.” Iggy’s then-boyfriend Nick Yong also had something to say: “If ppl dnt hate then it want be [email protected] smell good to me”. Tyler apologized in his typical fashion with: “SUCCESSFUL, TROLL SUCCESSFUL, IGGY I DIDNT MEAN TO HURT YOUR FEELINGS.”

Iggy criticizes Lorde in an interview with Billboard for her collaborative performance with the surviving members of Nirvana at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Iggy said, “Nothing against her, but I think when you’re doing a tribute to someone that’s dead, generally it should be the person’s peer,” Azalea commented. “Lorde is not Kurt Cobain’s peer. No matter if she killed the performance or not, I just don’t think it’s appropriate.” Lorde responded with: “I enjoyed it. I had a good time. That’s all that mattered.” Iggy later apologized on Twitter, “I consider lorde my very talented friend. I find it ironic 2 girls tell the media theyre full of shit & weeks later supposedly I dislike her.”

July 3, 2014
Iggy responded to the speech in a screenshot of a letter from her notes page on Instagram. She wrote: “I have to say the general explosion of pettiness online in the last few days is hard to ignore and honestly…lame. If I had won the BET award, that would’ve been great but it wasn’t my year and I don’t mind – so you shouldn’t either. Generally speaking, I’m unbothered by anything that ‘happened’ at the BET Awards and just feel worn out by everyone trying to make me have wars with people all the time. Anyone who wishes me well is welcome in my life, and those who don’t can’t get any more of my time. I hate to see everyone exhausting themselves on my behalf over things that I’m still not 100 percent sure even exist and don’t matter. Just let it go.” Nicki later backtracked and responded with “The media puts words in my mouth all the time and this is no different. I will always take a stance on women writing b/c I believe in us!” on Twitter. “

It shortly after came out that Young’s ex-girlfriend Keonna Green is pregnant with their second child together. In a string of tweets, Iggy detailed her feelings on the incident. One read, “I broke up with Nick because I found out he had brought other women into our home while I was away and caught them on the security footage.” While another said, “I find it baffling anyone would make the choice to bring a child into the world under these circumstances + want attention and $ for it.”
June 19 2017

In an unrelated interview, Halsey has some not so nice things to say about Azalea. “There’s a lot of people I wouldn’t put on my record” she said. “Iggy Azalea— absolutely not. She had a complete disregard for black culture. Fucking moron. I watched her career dissolve and it fascinated me.”
Iggy responded on an Australian talk show saying, “I thought it was a bit of a strange thing to throw that out there, but she’s young and I hope she learns maybe to be a bit less judgmental when she’s kind of in the same shoes.”

How an Asian American Iron Fist Can Work
By Yooni Kwon
(This was originally published on February 16, 2016. Obviously Yooni did not get his wish, but his argument is archived here for posterity’s sake.)
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has become immensely big since its inception with the first Iron Man film. My fellow Marvel fans, old and new alike are being given the honor of seeing their favorite characters come to life on the big screen. Marvel Studios then branched off into the small screen, with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC and then into Netflix.
With Netflix however, Marvel would use the same formula they used for the Avengers; introduce a few solo heroes then have them team up into one big team.
Carrying this in mind, Daredevil and Jessica Jones premiered on Netflix starring said heroes; both shows were critically acclaimed. Now the 2nd season of Daredevil will soon premiere, with Luke Cage and Iron Fist set to get their respective series. After these, all four aforementioned heroes will come together in one Avengers-esque team-up show known as the Defenders. But one of these heroes’ shows is getting a certain request from the public; that being Iron Fist.
But before we get in, allow me to answer the question some of you guys might have…
Who is Iron Fist?
Daniel Thomas Rand-K’ai (Or just Rand depending on who’s writing) aka Iron Fist is a kung-fu/mysticism based superhero created by writers Roy Thomas and Gil Kane in the 70s during the rise of Bruce Lee and Kung Fu movies.
A billionaire blonde, green-eyed Caucasian, Danny travels to the mystical Asian city of K’un-L’un. Once there, he trains in Kung Fu and becomes the city’s champion, earning the dragon Shou-Lao’s chi (aka mystical martial arts energy) and becoming..well, Iron Fist. Danny then returns to America and uses his powers to fight crime, teaming up with his eventual best friend Power Man aka Luke Cage and even becomes an Avenger at one point.
Danny, like most non-ethnic superheroes is a Caucasian American, as superhero comics at the time were primarily being created for white American males.
But as time passed, American society became much more diverse and Marvel Comics followed society’s change; now Falcon, Captain America’s African American right-hand man is now the Star-Spangled Soldier, a Muslim-American teenager Kamala Khlan is the new Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers became CAPTAIN Marvel) and now Jane Foster (Natalie Portman’s role in the MCU) is the new Thor instead of the ACTUAL Thor. Not to mention Miles Morales, the new Ultimate Spider-Man.
Following this change, many fans have been asking Danny Rand to change with the times and become Asian-American in his upcoming Netflix show. This movement began with Nerds of Color head editor Keith Chow, who began the movement with the hashtag #AAIronFist on Twitter (you can read his article here)
However a recent tweet from Chow cost him some credibility. Subsequently Chow lost a lot of followers, with many claiming that Chow only started the trend to attract more attention to his blog, Nerds of Color.
So how about a pro-AAIronFist article from an ACTUAL Iron Fist fan?
As an Asian-American comic book fan, I have loved Marvel comics (and Iron Fist, of course) since my own childhood. And while I never let it influence my love for good ol’ Danny or any of his stories, I always felt that he should have been Asian-American. Or at the very least, an alternate version of him should be Asian-American.
And before we go in, let me make it clear; I’m not just jumping on a bandwagon I think is progressive/cool; I actually believe an Asian-American Iron Fist can work. And here’s the hows and why it can work.
Danny being an Asian-American still makes him an outsider
Odds are you have an Asian friend born here in America. And said friend’s parents or grandparents probably either don’t speak English or speak English with a heavy accent or speak English very brokenly. Adding on to that, the aforementioned friend probably has little to no connection with whatever birth culture his/her parents or grandparents were raised with.
I personally being a 2nd-generation Asian-American can attest to this. And with a little re-writing, the same can work with an Asian black haired and brown-eyed (or still green-eyed because power of Shou-Lao) Danny Rand.
Daniel’s family can be a forgotten lineage of K’un-L’unians who have been in America for quite some time, their mark on history being their successful family company, the Rand Corporation. And because of his upbringing in America, Danny grows up unaware of his mystical heritage. And when he finally arrives in K’un Lun, the native Asians at best only TOLERATE him because of his ancestry, but nothing else. He’s still an outsider in every other way; the way he thinks, acts etc. AKA Looking like us doesn’t mean you are one of us.
A lot of people think this doesn’t work simply because Danny as an Asian would look just like the natives. Like I said above, you don’t have to look different to be an outsider; classifying somebody as an outsider because of their skin tone is just proof that you are racist. This isn’t the 70s anymore.
It gets rid of the white savior trope
The most problematic element given Danny Rand’s origin story is that when it comes down to it, it plays the old “white savior” cliché; this cliché invokes a Caucasian man going to some foreign land, mastering whatever skill the natives do and becoming their champion.
In fact, in the comics Hazmat of the Avengers Academy lampshades this, calling Danny “Mr. I Wish I Was Asian”
Now, Marvel has somewhat fixed this with writer Ed Brubaker’s Immortal Iron Fist…only to take a few steps back (see down below for what I mean)
Even in today’s society this trope is still seen among movies and TV shows; some prominent examples being 47 Ronin, The Last Samurai and even James Cameron’s Avatar (the Na’vi are all played by oriental American actors)
Having an K’un-L’un/Asian ethnic Danny going to his heritage land to learn from ‘his people’ will turn Iron Fist’s original story of cultural appropriation into that of cultural re-connection; Danny realizes his heritage and learns of his ‘true calling’, which is to be the Iron Fist and thus a hero. thus once his training is complete, he returns to America as a hero and a child of two lands.
And besides, Netflix has already done the “white guy in Asia” story;
This makes the MCU heroes actually diverse
A lot of mainstream media tends to check “diversity” on their TV show requirements list once one ethnic actor is cast. And in most cases said ethnic actor is more often than not, African-American.
Diversity in media doesn’t just mean one black character among a sea of white characters and that’s the end of it; it means all the ethnicities of one nation/culture all represented. Whether they’re black, Asian, Latino, man, woman, LGBT etc.
While I will admit there hasn’t been a Latino-American Marvel superhero yet (unless you count Joey from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Angela Del Toro aka White Tiger getting mentioned in Jessica Jones gives us hope that said Latina hero will one day appear (here’s what she looks likes for those curious;)
You might think “Well, what about Skye aka Daisy Johnson aka Quake, also from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? She went from white to half-Asian” (well, she’s treated as ‘pure’ Asian but that’s besides the point)
The publicity will work in Marvel’s favor
Disney and Marvel Studios may have started and expanded their Superhero Comic Cinematic Universe way ahead of DC, but as of right now they’re behind DC in one category; the minority heroes. In fact, DC has their female-led film (Wonder Woman in 2017) releasing before Marvel’s (Captain Marvel in 2018).
Even with Asian superheroes, Katana’s presence in Suicide Squad means DC’s still ahead when it comes to representation. What’s more, she is an Asian woman; historically Asian women have been on screen more than their male counterparts. So that’s why Quake doesn’t really count in the above argument’s stake.
So with all that said, by having the first on-screen Asian-American male superhero, Marvel would have much more publicity and praise. And with the rise of Asian movie markets like China, this will put them in their favor.
But no opinion is without disagreeing points. So let’s address the counterarguments, or CAs as they’re abbreviated in this article.
CA 1 – Don’t change Danny; just add Shang-Chi
This is one of the main arguments people bring up; instead of race-bending Danny Rand, bring in the Master of Kung Fu, Shang-Chi.
Shang-Chi is another Marvel superhero created in 70s as part of the Kung Fu movie rage. Unlike Danny Rand, Shang-Chi has been Asian (more specifically, Chinese as he’s based on Bruce Lee) since his conception and is stated to be THE best martial artist in the Marvel Universe (as his title. Master of Kung Fu would imply); Black Panther even states so in Black Panther Volume 4, Issue 11;
While admittedly it wouldn’t be too difficult to change Shang-Chi’s origin from Chinese to Chinese-American, is there a reason why there can’t be more than one heroic ethnic character on screen? If that’s the case, why is there more than one Hispanic character in Modern Family? Why is Fresh Off the Boat still on air and not cancelled? How did Into The Badlands make it past idea-pitching?
Shang-Chi can still be in the show, and his role could be on the sort of the other angel-on-his-shoulder of Danny; he and Luke can be the two links to Danny’s heritage and home; K’un-L’un and New York City. Also, Shang-Chi can also work as an unintentional “better guy”/friendly rival to Danny, since they’re both chi-wielding martial artists but it’s proven Shang-Chi is better.
CA 2 – Making the one Asian guy a kung fu master is racist and stereotypical
Newsflash, everyone; Luke Cage aka Power Man is black, born and raised in Harlem, and has a ‘ghetto’ accent. And that’s somehow completely ok?
That being said, Luke Cage isn’t seen as racist/stereotypical because he’s got an actual character outside of the aforementioned traits + “Danny’s black BFF”.
Actually for that matter, why is everyone saying just get Shang-Chi instead of race-bending Danny when Shang-Chi’s BEEN an Asian kung fu master since his creation?
All that aside, an Asian-ethnic Danny can still work without becoming stereotypical; the series can show Danny actually training and struggling to become the Kung Fu master he’ll one day be, instead of just being a master at Kung Fu because Asian.
He can be shocked at finding out his heritage is essentially a living stereotype; and despite his training and being chosen as Iron Fist, he rejects his heritage, not wanting to be a walking racial trope.
Thus a big part of the show can be Danny learning to accept his K’un-Lunian heritage; with his rejections resulting in a destabilized chi and thus exhausting him every time he uses his chi attacks (This is a legitimate plot point in the comics; for a while, Danny couldn’t use his chi attacks that much as it took too much of his stamina)
Some studios think the best way to avoid the potential stereotyping is to just get rid of the ethnic group entirely; perhaps a reason why Tilda Swinton, a white woman was chosen to play the Ancient One in the upcoming Doctor Strange film (traditionally drawn in the comics as a Tibetan man). Buy why not just get the ethnic group? But give them actual character outside so that they’re more than just a supposed stereotype thus giving them a chance to break the image of said stereotype.
Which is exactly what AMC’s Into the Badlands is doing.
CA 3 – Most of Iron Fist’s supporting cast/villains are Asian, so here’s no need to change Danny
Another popular argument. To address this, let’s take a look at three of the important characters of Iron Fist’s supporting cast and villains, starting with Lei Kung the Thunderer;
Lei Kung the Thunderer is an immortal martial arts teacher that has taught many students, one of them being Danny. It’s further revealed in the Immortal Iron Fist storyline that he trained many previous Iron Fists.
Next is Jeri Hogarth.
A straight, middle-aged lawyer, he organizes the day-to-day duties of the Rand Corporation (Danny’s company) from time to time as well as typical legal actions.
Does that name and job sound familiar? well if you’ve watched Jessica Jones, you’ve already met his MCU counterpart; the lesbian lawyer lady, Ms. JERYN “Jeri” Hogarth.
Now, it’s the guy who’s the closest thing Danny has to a nemesis; Davos aka Steel Serpent.
Davos is the son of the aforementioned Lei Kung the Thunderer. Davos trained alongside Danny to become the next Iron Fist, only to fail and subsequently exiled when he tried to kill Danny. Fueled by jealousy and hatred, Davos then became a major thorn in Danny’s side.
You might have seen his symbol in the first episode of Daredevil.
But those are only descriptions, so what’s my counterargument to this?
As you might have gathered from this short list, only Danny’s Mentor and nemesis are Asian while a friend/co-worker is white.
Unintentional or not, this argument is implying that Asians can never be heroes or their people’s chosen one; instead, they’ll always be playing second fiddle, helping their non-Asian savior to be better than them or be an obstacle to said non-Asian savior. So if this is the case, why is a stereotype that Asians are martial arts masters? Also, Lei Kung and Davos are ‘native-born’ Asians, not Asian-Americans. In case it wasn’t obvious enough, being Asian and Asian-American are two VERY different things.
And if the world can live with a gender and sexuality-flipped character, I think an Asian Danny Rand won’t be the end of said world.
CA 4 – Danny being white is crucial because it accentuates him being an outsider, a rich guy, being in an interracial relationship with Misty Knight and having white privilege.
CA 4-1: Danny being white is crucial because it accentuates him being an outsider
No, it doesn’t. Being an outsider in a different culture doesn’t necessarily have to be him being the one Caucasian among an Asian population. Like I said above; classifying somebody as an outsider because of their skin tone is just proof that the people who say/think/believe this are racist.
But let’s take a scenario; let’s say hypothetically MCU Danny Rand is cast and is an Asian American. Do you still want a white Iron Fist? Lucky for you, there is one; and that’s Orson Randall.
For those who don’t know, here’s a little background; In Ed Brubaker’s Immortal Iron Fist comic, said writer changed the Iron First mantle from a simple ‘chosen one and only champion’ to ‘chosen legacy passed down throughout time and history’. Thus came many Iron Fists, all who came before Danny Rand.
And here’s where they took a few steps back; Danny’s direct predecessor as Iron Fist is Orson Randall, a veteran of WWI…and another Caucasian man. Despite doing away with most if not all of the potential racial implications, Brubaker making Danny’s predecessor another white guy did raise a few eyebrows.
But there was still something interesting with his origin; Despite being another “white guy among an Asian population”, Orson’s backstory is that his parents crashed in K’un-L’un while his mother was pregnant with him. A month later, Orson was born in K’un-L’un and despite his non-Asian heritage, the people accepted him as a ‘born and raised’ son so to speak. Upon being trained in martial arts by Lei Kung (who was mentioned above), Orson became the Iron Fist and left to fight in WWI. Later in the present day, he came to find Danny to give him the Book of the Iron Fists (a book detailing past Iron Fists and their techniques) and to warn him about the Tournament of the Immortal Weapons.
So considering this aforementioned importance to Danny, he’ll be in the show one way or another. And it can be an interesting take on the ‘white savior’ part of Iron Fist; not only has there been one, Orson can also become a second mentor and a potential future image of Danny since Orson’s stronger. But this time, the white guy (Orson) isn’t better because he’s white; it’s because he’s older, wiser and has seen plenty of s%*+ compared to the younger, less-experienced non-white guy (Danny).
You know, almost like Adonis and Rocky’s relationship in Ryan Coogler’s Creed.
And here’s something to get in your head; Comic Danny will stay white (at least until Marvel says otherwise); the MCU ultimately, is just one more multiverse in the numerous Marvel universes.
CA 4-2: Danny being white is crucial because it accentuates him being a rich guy
Since when can only white people be rich? Please try and enlighten me; my popcorn’s ready.
CA 4-3: Danny being white is crucial because it accentuates him being in an interracial relationship with Misty Knight
To put this in perspective, here’s who Misty Knight is;
Mercedes “Misty” Knight is one of Marvel’s few black female superheroines. A ‘normal’ superhero like Black Widow and Hawkeye, she has fought alongside many of the Netflix heroes and is set to appear in Luke Cage, portrayed by actress Simone Missick.
But in perspective to this argument, one of the things that stood out for Misty was that she was usually Danny Rand’s girlfriend (and wife in some occasions/stories); it was one of the few times there was an interracial couple in comics, alongside Luke Cage and Jessica Jones.
And this argument is saying that Danny HAS to be white for this to work.
So white guys are the only non-black ethnic men that can date black women?
So I guess this never happened between John Cho’s Demetri Noh and Gabrielle Union’s Zoey Andata in FlashForward…
Come on; in today’s society, any ethnic man can date any ethnic woman, least of all an African-American woman.
In short, I think a lot us want to see something different; so how about an AMBW couple as opposed to the usual WMBW couple we usually see in shows like Scandal?
CA 4-4: Danny being white is crucial because it accentuates him having white privilege
What is your definition of white privilege? It may be different, but let’s go with activist Peggy McIntosh’s definition;
White privilege can be described “an invisible weightless knapsack of assurances, tools, maps, guides, codebooks, passports, visas, clothes, compass, emergency gear, and blank checks”. But for white people only.
Yes most of America is white. And yes, I will admit cases with this quote-unquote “white privilege” happens, but that’s another thing. Comics and Pop culture as a whole have a responsibility to teach the people that many wrong things still exist and how we must change it. Being white doesn’t mean you deserve something more than ethnic people. Our society’s changed since the ‘70s, and it’s time we learn that every race is equal, good AND bad.
And besides, outside of K’un-L’un there’s BARELY any mention of Danny’s race. In fact, him being a billionaire is brought more attention.
“Rich Guy Privilege” can be the substitute for “White Privilege”, considering the latter is what gets more focused on anyway. So you really can’t argue that him being white is crucial. Unlike Luke Cage, Shang-Chi, Black Panther or even White Tiger Danny’s race ultimately matters little to his character.
I don’t expect everyone who reads this to immediately take my side and tweet #AAIronFist.
And I do understand why some of you guys reading this don’t want the change; a character you’ve loved for so long suddenly changing with the times and you don’t want that; you want the one that you remember growing up with.
But comics are changing to reflect our society; no longer are women and minorities ‘just there’, they can be actually be good heroes in their own right.
I ask you to at least consider the positive effects of an Asian-American Iron Fist. If done right, this can be a great change; in the same veins as Kamala Khan becoming the new Ms. Marvel
So if you agree with me, all the power to you, friends.
And if you don’t agree with me, I hope that you at least now understand why a lot of people, myself included are asking that the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Danny Rand to be an Asian-American.

Why I do fandom and how I think we should do fandom
[Views are entirely my own and not aimed at any person/people in particular. This is also a bit outdated from my personal views, but I’m keeping it up cos personal growth is important to show.]
fandomˈfandəm/ noun
the state or condition of being a fan of someone or something. “my 17 years of sports fandom”
the fans of a particular person, team, fictional series, etc. regarded collectively as a community or subculture. “the Breaking Bad fandom”
-Google
I’ve been doing fandom for a long time…
From ever since I can remember, my life can be split into series of very intense fandoms. I grew up with the growth of the internet. I remember it feeling fairly new and exciting when my mum got us a dial up box but I was young and it has kind of always been available to me. The internet fuels fangirls: We live online. Some people think this is a terrible thing, that we’re missing the actual world, but it’s a whole world on there and, an awful lot of the time, it’s a much better, more accepting world.
Harry Potter was my first fandom and has been constant and underlying through everything else I’ve loved. I threw myself onto mugglenet as soon as I had the internet at home. I don’t think I was allowed an account on the forum as a kid but I read the posts and felt “yes, these are my people. I’m not that strange. There are other people who re-read the Harry Potter books on a constant rotation.” I think I was probably in this fandom from the ages of 9-12, mainly watching from the side-lines but having a sense of home.
Then I had the typical tween fandom phase: Zac Efron and related movies. Like EVERYTHING. I was so intense. This was back in the day that youtube was used as social media. I’m pretty sure I liked it so much because my mum wasn’t really aware that I was talking to strangers on there, she just thought I was looking up videos of Zac’s abbs (not entirely wrong but a pretty good cover up, well done 13 year old me!). I made my first fandom friends. We chatted all the time on MSN. It sort of allowed me to separate my obsession and my “real” life and I think it made me a bit less annoying to my school friends.
My mum was amazing with this fandom. She used to take me to premieres to meet him and I would get this shaky, butterflies feeling for weeks afterwards. I, of course, mistook this for being madly in love with him. Spoiler alert: actual love feels completely different to this infatuation but it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing for me to experience as a young-mid teenager. If you fancy a celebrity it’s a completely safe expression of your sexuality. This is why I think girls tend to be a lot more intense than boys in fandom: culture doesn’t allow us to express ourselves in many ways and this is seen as totally innocent and acceptable.
Somehow, in all this, I found the energy to count down to the last Potter book for 100 days and get 13 A*-C GCSE’s. And have non-fandom friends. I sort of fell out of the fandom when I was about 15/16.
I then moved onto Doctor Who when I was about 16-21. I think this is when fandom started to become more about the “fandom” than the actual TV show for me. Fandom is literally a kingdom of fans and it is honestly a family of lost, crazy young people who need somewhere to express themselves. I was pretty intense but only really to the people in my fandom (obviously my non-fandom friends knew I loved it) but the friends I made (hello, Kinglets) are still some of my dearest. We’re even going to be bridesmaids at the first wedding in the group.
We go to conventions together, we go the all the actors plays together, we’ll go and find them if they’re filming in London. But mostly, we’re really important friends. I know that I can go to them for anything and that intense start to our friendship has made them really deep.
The Cursed Child fandom
And then we get to now. You can see my post about Cursed Child here. But in short we are binge-watching a play because we’ve sussed how to get tickets pretty much whenever we want them. It is bringing me so much joy and it feels really, really intense: way more than my pervious fandoms. Most my fandom friends live in or close to London because that’s the only way you can really watch the play constantly, some of them I even met at stage door and not online. The reason this is so intense is because it is so accessible. Many of the cast are really active on social media and (if I wanted to, had absolutely no shame and nothing better to do with my life) I could go to stage door everyday.
Since this fandom has been so intense and I’ve been very visible as more than just a username there has been a lot of controversy about why I am doing this and whether it’s appropriate. We have constant conversations on the group chat about if certain people are taking it too far and how and why. They’re just discussions and nobody in that chat thinks they have the right to judge the others because we’ve all got close to that invisible line in the past 6 months but where does the line stand for different people? Obviously we all draw the line in different places based on our perspectives on life. Is it even our responsibility to police each other? We’ve often thought we were better than the younger members of the Cursed Child fandom because we don’t tweet the cast everyday to say we love them and we don’t scream and cry at them (not sober anyway, and we’ve learnt our lesson on that one). But does that make us better? Do we have the right to judge anyone?
Why I do fandom
The reason why I am doing this is easy for me to decode. Fangirls tend to be the clever, successful young people. The popular kids were not and will never be one of us. We have busy lives and we’re really easily bored. I am always thinking and always inside of my own head: if there isn’t something for me to focus on I get fidgety and frustrated. But if we’re the clever kids, how is this intense obsession not taking up all our brain space and preventing us achieving our full potentials? I find that it’s easier for me to focus on my studies when I’m intensely part of a fandom. It helps to give me tunnel vision; with just my work and my fandom to focus on, I have less to be distracted by. I’m a scientist; my success relies upon my obsession with my work. It is already very intense and in order to take effective time out, it helps to be obsessed with my hobbies too.
Second, fandom is my creative outlet. I have to be so calculated and methodical all day and that isn’t all I am good at or enjoy. Writing fanfiction lets me write without having to take the time to develop my own characters because I’m way too busy with my work. Having theatre friends lets me go and see everything and talk about plays in a way that a room full of scientist will never want to. And it gives me a group of people who encourage me to pursue creative hobbies rather than telling me it’s a waste of time.
Finally, and perhaps more importantly, this fandom gives me intense joy. Both watching the play and hanging out with the friends I’ve made through it. The fact that I can experience that joy over and over again and express that to the members of the cast that are bringing that is an absolute blessing. And therefore I am not going to stop doing it because people are jealous or are worried that I’m annoying somebody. This doesn’t mean I won’t adjust my behaviour if somebody has a point but I know why I’m doing this and it’s all because it makes me so happy.
How should we do fandom?
The question about where we should draw the line is much more complicated. We definitely freaked out some of the younger cast members when we started obsessing. This is also a unique fandom because these people are the same age as most of us, we’re adults and so have the awareness that this is, if you really think about it, quite weird. Its taken a few months but I think we’ve reached a balance where we all understand each other. They don’t need to have their guards up with us, we’re joking most of the time. We’re not the fans who are going to follow them to the tube station; we don’t have their twitter notifications switched on so we can reply to them 2 seconds after they tweet anything just to tell them we love them and we aren’t going to hover around stage door except when we’re meant to be doing so after the show. We genuinely appreciate their art.
But should we stop going to stage door when we’ve seen the show? And is it wrong for us to go when we haven’t been in and our friends have? It has reached the point that if anyone is watching the play anyone who is in the area will go and meet them at stage door and just hover behind them because we want to see our friends. I don’t actually get a buzz from seeing Sams’ face, but I do get a buzz from seeing one of the collective. My intention is not inappropriate so I think its fine. Others do not think its fine but I’m not hurting anyone and as long as we’re aware that we should be as respectful as possible, I think this is all good. I’m also never going to stop going to stage door while people seem happy to see me. I’m actually quite perceptive and think I’d be able to tell if people were genuinely done with me.
But I do think that, to some extent, it is our responsibility to police each other. I think that, in general, fandom-policing is a waste of time because you can’t control people who are as intense as we are, and you shouldn’t. But I think that we are an actual group of friends and a sub-fandom of sorts, who have such open access to this play and its cast that we have to follow our own rules and should remind each other to do so. We don’t want to be known as annoying and we don’t want to make people feel uncomfortable. I don’t appreciate when people outside of our group tell us to behave a certain way because they have no way of knowing the context of what we do or previous conversations which may make some things ok for us to do, but not others. But I do think it’s important for us to continue to discuss where the line is to keep having an amazing time.
Fandom is an intense experience for everyone involved. The only way I can describe it to non-fandom people is that it’s like when you fall in love really quickly but it’s with a whole group of people and a thing, all at the same time. It’s a bit like falling but it’s amazing. Of course this leads to insanity for both the members of the fandom, who are loving it, and the objects of it, who are probably confused by the whole thing. If we want to be seen as responsible, adult fandom members it’s so important to keep checking ourselves.
This intensity has hit me as complete and utter joy since I saw Cursed Child for the first time last June. The friendships I’ve made have been so important and are valid and real. We don’t have to justify ourselves to the rest of the world and we aren’t hurting anyone.
I know that I’m a bit annoying and obsessed but as a wise man once said: “Some people are obsessed with heroin” (Daniel Radcliff).

EXCLUSIVE: Aaron Carter Breaks Down in Tears Over Arrest, Reveals What Drugs He Takes

"What I need is for people to understand that I'm human and that I make mistakes just like every other human in this world, but I would never risk my life or my girlfriend's life after all of my siblings have all had DUIs."
