How to Deal with Personal Property Theft
I was attending an art show with my good friend, Tyrhee Spivey on Saturday, November 10th, 2018. It was a night with free wine, and a FIRE food truck. I also caught up with some old friends of mine that I met while navigating the entertainment industry. I saw my friends Butta & Bizkit, also known as BnB, perform for the first time. Multiple pictures were taken, and good times were had. While we were walking back to my car, getting ready to go to a comedy show at the Laugh Factory, I don’t see the familiar glare of light bouncing back from the window.
While I’ll remember that, and have great memories from that night, I would also remember it for a much darker reason: my car was broken into.
It Came at the Worst Possible Time.
This comes as the worst possible time: I’m living out of my car, and recording my journey through way of ‘Homeless in LA’ which will be dropping on YouTube soon. Homeless in LA is starting to take its toll on my body, and I’m becoming less comfortable. It’s becoming winter in Los Angeles and it’s cooling down.
Secondly, I only have $6 in my account, coupled with my day job putting me on furlough about a month ago. I’ve been making ends meet by driving for Lyft, but it’s not enough. I recently got head shots done, so I can full start my transition to lead roles. However, I’m going to be driving for Uber and UberEATS so I can make them my full job while going to auditions.
Thirdly (and this definitely isn’t a bad thing!), I’ve been starting to create content with other people, like The Stacey Twins and Carey Boy. Not only that, but I’m also being pushed to create my own content again, which is outlined by a black border with white lettering.
So while, I’ve been extremely busy, for the first and second reasons, it’s not good. So today, let’s talk about how to deal with someone stealing your stuff.
Dealing with Theft
(5 Steps)
Assess the Damage and Check to Make Sure the Area’s Safe.
The person that robbed you could still be in the area, or could even be waiting for you to come back to rob you again. Usually the latter doesn’t happen, but it always could.
Scan the Environment.
Check your car, and look for stuff that was stolen. In my case, my friend’s backpack, MacBook Pro and all his notes were stolen. In all, more than $1500 was taken.
Scan the buildings and cars around the area to see if someone or something captured the incident. In my case, we were able to find 5 security cameras on that street, including one camera equipped with night vision. It was pointed right at my car too!
Call the police
Regardless of what people think of the police now-a-days, they are still peace keepers. You’ve got to report the crime, and letting them know will start the process of an investigation. Make sure to tell them EVERYTHING - if you withhold information because they’re the [insert alternate police names here], then you’re working against yourself and the detectives’ investigation. At the end, they’ll give you a investigation confirmation number. Be sure to save it!
I was pretty upset while talking to them, and they just gave me some time to vent. Because it was Los Angeles at midnight, no officers came out. But a phone call was enough to get it done. They even put me on hold a couple times because they started hearing the frustration in my voice while I was giving them information and talking to my friends and strangers from the event.
Call Insurance
Call your insurance to start the claim process. Most of the time, they’ll ask for a police report number (see step 3) and fill out any additional information that they’ll need.
If they don’t ask you for it, like me (again, it was midnight), then explain everything the same way that you told the police, and give them any additional information.
If they’re worth their salt, they’ll start the process of setting up repairs for your vehicle. Their goal is to help make the process as stress-less as possible. There’s always something I remember in the unfortunate instance I have to call: you pay money for insurance: now it’s time to use it.
I have an appointment set up for a glass repair shop in Woodland Hills (where I’m staying with some friends) while I’m having my glass repaired.
Call Parents and/or Loved Ones
I contacted my parents after the incident to let them know. I’ve only got $6 to my name, and not enough to pay for a deductible. They asked many more specific questions, and they said that we’d wait and see about the process of getting my car fixed. They were in the middle of sleeping, but thankfully, they answered the phone.
Closing Thoughts
Afterwards, Tyrhee and I just sat there for a good half hour in silence. I was so angry and upset, that I could end up going down a very dark path without worrying about the consequences. That rage also made me numb.
I also put the pictures on social media. My life as an actor isn’t without trouble, and I like to show people the realistic side of life. When you have something like this happen to you, keep your cool and don’t hesitate to let people know. Take steps to fortify yourself and your property, whether that’s with cameras, legally-attained weapons, etc. Not everyone has the opportunity to go through this. If/when it happens to you however, follow this list to help keep your stress down.
Do you have any other steps that you follow when you’ve had to deal with this? Sound off in the comments below!
