some of the things I've learned in the Adventurer's Bible are so chilling... really drives home the fact that this is a completely different world with medieval-like stuff going on. I'm especially chilled by what Laios and Falin said about the "mountain people"...
#country folk who move to the big city and start talking abt horrific things like it's normal#i see why they wanted to leave so bad#but like neither of them in that comic seems to question whether or not it's ethical to kill the mountain people...#dungeon meshi#delicious in dungeon#adventurers bible#also otta being a human trafficker jesus christ#the only canonically gay character was arrested for himan trafficking...#ive seen some ppl argue that the charge was generalized or misplaced and that what she actually did might not've been that bad#but there's no way of knowing#the canaries are all very violent and elf culture seems to encourage numbness to the suffering of other humans#also i keep thinking abt how her half-foot partners must feel#for them it's an extremely long relationship that feels like their life's true love#but for her this is like a fling or at best the elf equivalent of a 2 yr relationship#and then they don't even get to grow old with her cause she's too afraid to watch them die#i feel similarly abt marcilles parents#like apparently her mom remarried to a gnome pretty quickly after Donato died#also i swear i thought he had a different first name but no his name is just Donato lmao#but dude for him she was his life's true love whom he spent his entire life with#literally he met her was he was so young and died married to her#i just really really get marcilles deaire to make everyone have equal lifespans

Thinking about the lifespans of Dungeon Meshi elves... The fact that they're completely unnatural alters my brain chemistry, because you can tell just how haphazardly the demon implemented their wish. They live five times the length of tall-men, so they age at a fifth of their rate. It's simple maths and the implications are terrifying. No wonder their birth rate and population are declining - their early development is so slow that at the age of two, they're still unable to stand.
They don't reach adulthood until their eighties. What does the infant mortality look like? How many elves succumb to illness or injury before they're fully mature? It only takes one accident to lose the child you've been raising for decades - and could you bring yourself to care for another? Add to that the implication elf culture has no idea how to process grief... just look at the way the Canaries treat Rin after the death of her parents. They're callous and insensitive and detached - part of that's racism, but there's also an element of pure cold ignorance. They don't even recognise the emotion on her face.
And that's just scratching the surface... does elven memory accommodate their extended lifespan? Once you reach two hundred or so, do the years start blurring together? Kabru mentions that their temporal awareness is remarkably poor.
Two years feel like a few months. Their lives are longer but not fuller. They're older but not wiser than the short-lived races, and most refuse to understand this. Those that do grasp it are interesting - namely Otta, who's ostracised for pursuing half-foot women.
A 30-year old elf is a young child; a 30-year old half-foot has entered middle age. Otta is in the equivalent of her late twenties. She knows that her elven lifespan makes her no more mature than a half-foot - but she also acknowledges that it creates a rift between herself and her partners, and not just in the eyes of society. 'She dumps them as soon as they pass 30', but probably not for the reasons Lycion assumes. For this to be a pattern, decades must have passed - it's possible Otta doesn't want to watch them die as she herself barely ages. No doubt some of her previous lovers have already passed away. In the end, all living 400 years accomplishes is leaving them out of sync with the rest of humanity.
Marcille's perhaps the best example. As a half-elf, she's got 95% of her life ahead and the thought terrifies her. She's going to lose everyone she loves, over and over and over again, and this cycle has barely even started. She runs at a different pace. This context adds so much to her dynamic with Falin in earlier chapters.
Marcille loves her! She's scared for her! Maybe even of her! She's grown attached to a short-lived girl who she met as a kid when Marcille was a teaching assistant! Biologically and developmentally, they're the same age, but chronologically she's twice as old as Falin! Considering what happened to her mother, is history repeating itself? Her feelings towards Falin are tangled and messy and fascinating. They're also more than a little homoerotic, which makes Marcille's infantilization of her friend all the more interesting. It feels like her way of resolving their power imbalance, of remaining a responsible (former!) authority figure... but it's also a coping mechanism. She's frightened by the ways Falin is maturing and changing - aging - and keeping her mental image of her friend as young as possible is her way of denying the march of time that's destined to sever their bond.
Marcille's dream of lifespan extension would remove the need for this obfuscation, render them equal... only, they already are! This desire is imposed onto Falin, but it's primarily for Marcille's benefit. Watching her fight for a world nobody wants, for reasons both selfish and altruistic... it's as tragic as it is understandable. I love this manga.

i see it often that people do not see laios liking kabru, but in reality laios does like kabru! quite a lot for a guy that (from his perspective) he just met! laios forgetting kabrus exact name is not evidence of disinterest in any way--hes only heard it a couple of times, he struggles with small details (unless you want to argue laios also doesnt give a shit about marcille, chilchuck and senshi, he also forgets small details about them. if you do think this, i think dungeon meshi may be too advanced for you. stick to bluey.), and the man has autism. like near explicitly.
laios offers food from their limited supplies because kabru showed an interest in eating monsters, and makes him an omelette so he can have something to eat even though other food was already being prepared. he listens to kabrus criticism of his behavior and mindset in trying to protect falin even though she was straight up killing people, and tries to drag kabru to safety. he watches kabru defuse the situation between himself and toshiro masterfully, and confides in him how hurt he is that toshiro is so angry and how he mustve done something truly awful to upset him like that. when kabru tells him that meeting him was the best part of his time in the dungeon, laios agrees and says its the same for him (remember: laios doesnt do empty platitudes well--if he said it, he meant it).
when kabru leaves, we get three fucking panels in a row of laios staring after him, flexing the hand kabru was just holding, and reflecting on kabrus words ("next time..?")
when kabru shows up again deep in the dungeon, chilchuck is suspicious, but laios is so excited to see him that he throws caution to the wind and lets kabru hold his hand again despite seconds later crossing succubus off his list of shapeshifters that could be appearing as kabru--a carelessness around monsters and danger laios rarely exhibits. when kabru gives his warning about the canaries, laios is grateful. he notices how often kabru saves his skin
when lycion reveals that kabru lied about wanting to eat the omelette laios made, it breaks his heart because he made that with love! he made it for kabru, and kabru didnt like it, and now he knows kabru was just playing at friendship to use him. that breaks his heart, hes distraught, but he doesnt have time to be hurt about it when marcille needs his help urgently so he turns to run to her. he apologizes to kabru and tries to leave again. he isnt listening to what kabru is saying here because kabru was just revealed as a liar and because it doesnt really cohere (kabru is stuttering and speaking in broken sentences as he tries to explain about the dungeons power) and he needs to save marcille
he doesnt believe kabru wanted to be his friend, because who would? why would laios be special enough, loveable enough, to go through the pains kabru went through, just to be his friend? but when kabru makes the intensity of his desire known, laios promises to feed him again, at a proper restaurant --and again, food is care for laios, to feed someone is to love them. marcille is still his priority bc she is in real danger but he means what he says, he really does want to start over with kabru and be real friends with him
once we hit the resolution of the story, kabru near glues himself to laios, helping him and trying to cement himself as a right-hand man, and making known his intent to support laios no matter what. in the medieval manuscript style epilogue, kabru is one of two friends that stick by laios as he becomes king. both marcille and kabru become the people closest to him (besides falin of course), two friends who will always support him, always let him know when hes fucked up and theyre mad at him, two friends who he can rely on. laios did not have to accept kabru as an advisor, he did not have to ask him to stay with him. he did that because after everything, he trusts kabru now, and knows he can count on him
while laios doesnt give any big monologues about what he likes about kabru, its very clear he does, and we know what things laios values in other people. he appreciates kabrus social skills (very clear in the post canon comic in the adventurers bible), his intelligence, that kabru WANTS to be around him and understand him even though its difficult, his strength, and frankly he does appreciate his charm (three fucking panels straight of staring after him). laios really values people with specialized skillsets who are willing to tell him frankly what they think and advise him in areas he is weak in (something we see in his relationship with... i was gonna say namari but its everyone. he does this with everyone he likes. and in the resolution kabru does this CONSTANTLY he does not go a panel without giving laios his professional opinion on how to deal with people).
in conclusion: arent you hungry, kabru? let laios make something for you
#kabru#laios touden#dungeon meshi#kabru of utaya#labru#not explicitly for my labru girlies but it feels sometimes like we are the only ones who understand that these characters are friends

Being a Bard within the group! (Dungeon Meshi)
A/n: I recently watched Dungeon Meshi (I also started playing Baldur's Gate 3) and I have been enjoying everything so far and I had the idea to write a relationship dynamic between a bard reader and the rest of the Dungeon Meshi group (I also might write a Barbarian/Fighter type of reader)
Laios:
He is amazed at how you can compose such lively tunes and respects how much time and effort you put into your craft
Will be amused if you choose to try to write a song about him (He smiles to himself when he overhears you trying to find a word that rhymes with his name)
He will not like it if you were to ever sing about him in front of others (his facial expression will not be a happy one, more of a nervous one since he doesn't like it when he's in the center of attention)
Laios really likes it when everyone is resting at camp after a meal and you play your instrument to pass the time (he likes to tap his foot along to the melody)
Laios is happy to provide you with monster names and rhyming words to help you complete your song (or parts your stuck on)
Marcille:
She is very glad that you are with their group since when you play your instrument for the group it calms her nerves a little with each note you play (her ears slightly twitch when you play a more cheerful songs since her hearing is more sensitive)
Marcille gets as sad as you when you break your instrument, but is just as eager to use her magic to repair the instrument (maybe it fell from a high place or that it took on a bit of water damage, but most likely you smashed it over a monster's/person's head and it broke)
She also likes it when you write songs about their adventures (especially if you sing/write about how powerful she can be with her magic, but like Laios is very flustered if you sing about her in front of a crowd, she will turn red and try to hide behind her staff)
Your soft songs without words, or humming at most, settle her nicely into her sleep (she sometimes gets the tune stuck in her head for hours until she begs you to play that one song for her again)
Chilchuck:
Chilchuck values you as a companion since you sometimes use your skills to get the group out of tough situations (sometimes you use your charms talk your way out tough situations, which is a RELIEF because he has no trust in the others abilities. Laios...)
this one time you talked your way into a free night's stay at the local pub the group frequents in exchange to entertain guest all night long, in which you were happy to since you also sometimes get extra coins from generous people passing by
He probably won't say it directly to you but he really enjoys listening you compose new songs (his ears are also quite sensitive just like Marcille's, so when he hears you trying to figure out which notes sound good together, he has a small smile on his face while he continues to polish and make sure his lockpicks are in good condition)
Chilchuck also can't hold back his laughter when you mock people when they are being disrespectful to someone in your party and you jump in to defend them (He manages to slap his hand over his mouth just before he lets out an ugly laugh since he doesn't expect you to roast your opponent so hard. Sometimes even managing to cry so hard he winds himself)
Senshi:
Doesn't really get why you are traveling in the dungeon in the first place, since this is the last place he would think someone with your skills would ever be
Senshi is not used to hearing the soft melodies coming from your instrument. Instead of the usual noises of whatever creature on the current floor he was on would make or the occasional screaming parties that travel by (or he is so used to the silence that he doesn't notice how much he misses the warmth and sound of another soul)
He admires any carving or engraving you have on your instrument and asks you if there's a story behind it or if it was for aesthetic purpose (wants to ask if he can hold your instrument so that he learn more about you as a person based on how you handle it while asking you how you came to play such an instrument)
Senshi takes note of how well you seem to take care of your work and takes the time compliment you on your hard work (He learns from you how to properly maintain your instrument and keeps an eye out for anything that might help when he gets the chance)
He comes to love when you play songs while he cooks a meal for the group to enjoy, He sometimes gets concentrated in what he's doing that he doesn't realize that he's softly humming along to the melody your currently playing (He likes to slightly sway along with the tune while he dices things or when he's waiting for the dish to finish cooking)

here are some preliminary sketches I had done in my sketchbook for the peepaw chilchuck comic.
I wanted to follow it up with some worldbuilding thoughts I had while working on it, if that sort of thing is interesting to anyone:
- itâd take place 5ish years post-canon
- I changed almost everyoneâs hair to show time had passed. Chilchuck and Kabru were the most drastic (I COULDNT STOP THINKING ABOUT THAT LONG HAIR KABRU THAT KUI DREW), Marcille grew out her bangs, Senshiâs beard is slightly shorter, and Izutsumiâs hair is mildly longer. Laios and Falin give me the impression that theyâre the brand of neurodivergent thatâd pick one haircut and stick to it for the rest of their lives. I almost gave Laios facial hair but idk heâs gotten over his daddy issue enough for that.
- Emertim Chils: I tried to follow both the half-foot and dwarven naming conventions for the baby, so Emer- comes from âemeraldâ (dwarven names are often gemstones or ore) and -tim because Chilchuckâs fatherâs first name was Tim :) Dwarves donât have family names, so Emertim would take Chils, same as Flertom. Usually theyâre named after their father but I didnât wanna name a random dwarf man. thank you Chel for helping name him đ«¶đ
- Initially the idea that Chilchuck would keep an entire grandchild a secret was just a joke, but it made sense when I thought about it. I wonder,, would dwarf/half-foot couples have trouble conceiving? Because if so, Iâd imagine Flertom may have lost a couple pregnancies. Chilchuck is already such a private person, and I donât think heâd feel comfortable airing his daughterâs grief like that. They wouldnât wanna tell anyone until they were sure this baby was gonna make it.
- For the above reason, Chilchuck would absolutely spoil this kid. Not that he wouldnât have spoiled his grandkids anyway, but I think after all that stress, heâd be extra extra doting. Heâd be letting him do things heâd never DREAM of letting his own daughters do. Completely different parenting style.
- I think heâs still too prideful to take advantage of Laios being King (sidenote: is Laios even wealthy??? does a kingdom that sprung up from a previously-sunken continent even have money?? what the fuck is their economy), but like,,, if Laios offered any gifts he wouldnât exactly say no.
- Izutsumi surprisingly really likes the baby :3 sheâd like to take naps with him and heâd like her purrs and sheâd have a lot of fun playing with him.
- SENSHI. meemaw mode. That kid would grow up not realizing Senshi isnât technically one of his grandads. He is FEEEEEDING this kid.
- LAIOS DOES GET TO HOLD THE BABY!!!!!! just. eventually. They donât actually expect a Tarrare situation LMAO they just wait until the kid is a little less fragile and a little more mobile. I think Laios would be really good with toddlers.
- Chilchuck is very thankful Emertimâs half-foot genes kick in sooner than later because he was getting too big for him to carry.
- Emertim would probably get the extended lifespan. He and Marcille would get to stay friends for a very very long time :â)
- my personal headcanon is that Chilchuck and his wife decide to split. He still loves her and itâs probably still a bit mutual, but after four years of almost no-contact, they decide their communication issues arenât working well for their relationship. Plus, the Adventurerâs Bible says Chilchuck is renting their old house out to family, and heâd feel bad kicking them out so he and wife could move back in. Theyâd still be on good terms, and would be good at coordinating when to babysit.

I feel like this is such a key moment in Shuro and Falinâs dynamic that iâve never seen talked about and wish was mentioned again in canon. âŒïžTHIS IS NOT A SHIP POSTâŒïž for clarity but to me it adds such an interesting layer to how Shuro must feel towards her and the imbalance in their relationshipâŠ..
So much of his character is feeling alienated and inaccessible to the people around him, at first in his own family and then culturally after he left home. the party doesnât even know his actual name. heâs under so much pressure and could feel like anyone Knowing another side of him would compromise his obligations, and partly why he resents what he views as Laiosâs compulsive earnestness so much. but at the same time I think him seeing how much patience and love she has for Laios makes him wonder if he could be safe with her. and in the caterpillar scene he sees Falin finding beauty in something others find repulsive and inconsequential (plus in the recent Adventure Bible we learn he also has an interest in crittersâŠ.)
Iâm not sure when the caterpillar scene takes place in relation to his nightmare, either way she literally enters his subconscious and saves his life!! Iâm so so so curious about the details tbh. I canât imagine how humiliating that would feel but at the same time it took away the need for him to confess any of his weaknesses, Falin took it upon herself and the most Insane part to me is he probably doesnât even remember what she saw, because Marcille didnât remember the content of hers. and thereâs no way heâd ASK, and Falin wouldnât volunteer that information.
anywayyyyy Shuro knows sheâs seen the deep pain and loneliness at his core and guided him out. he wants that, he DID get it, but doesnât know HOW!!!! so of course heâd try to chase that in reality and he would feel an intense closeness with her because sheâs the only one who whoâs Literally Seen that side of him, one that he might not have a full realization of.
it rly captures this imbalance between them that I think Shuro really wants to bridge even if heâs unequipped for it, and Falin doesnât reciprocate. like. You See Me, Can You Please Show Me What You See? he knows, factually, that she could understand and help him. but he only offers to make her âcomfortable.â and at the end of the day she does for him what she would do for anyone, often at great risk to herself (imo her desire for independence in the AB demonstrates her wanting to break this) he knows this and it would be enough, he even admires that about her greatly. but it doesnât leave much room for her own self actualization.
I donât have a conclusion other than thank you Ryoko Kui. thank you.

TAGS / WARNINGS: gender neutral reader, modern au,    minor pining, background marcille/falin WC: 1,000 NOTE: divorced father of 3 save me... save me    divorced father of 3...
â MINORS / AGELESS / BLANK BLOGS WILL BE BLOCKED.
âMove over.â
Chilchuckâs voice startles you. The bowl in his hands is steaming: a hearty stew made with Falin and Marcilleâs collective effortâ(âSenshiâs tried and true recipe!â). A thick slice of bread perches on its rim. It smells just as heavenly as it did at dinner.
âHere?â you ask, stupefied. The armchair youâve claimed is wide; thereâs easily enough space to fit a Chilchuck-sized person, but your mind jumpsâunbiddenâto the reason heâd been late in the first place.
âWhere else?â He nudges you with his knee. âAs if Iâm gonna sit near that love-fest over there.â
âYouâre not welcome anyways,â Marcille tuts, midway through dipping the maraschino cherry from her sundae into Falinâs mouth.
âThis is my apartment!â
You concede with a laugh: itâs just your bruised heart working overtime. The moment his body settles, shoulders touching, you stop being able to taste the ice cream Laios had scooped into your bowl. Existence narrowing to that point of contact with a familiar little rush.
Itâs Laiosâ turn to choose tonightâs movie, much to Marcilleâs dismayâ(âA documentary classifies! This is a really interesting one!â)âand he scrolls to find it as Chilchuck digs into his food.
Midway through, you engage him in a thrilling mock-battle of fencing spoons. Falin dozes, lulled from the careful stroke of Marcilleâs fingers through her hair. By the time the credits roll, theyâre folded onto each other, soft snores drowned out by music.
âThey fell asleep again,â Chilchuck drawls, chin cushioned against his hand.
âMust be crashing after all that sugar,â Laios suggests, drapes a blanket over them.
âThey were pretty high energy tonight. Eager to hear about how Chilchuckâs date went, I guess,â you tease, taking up the mantle with Marcille fast asleep. âYou didnât even tell us her name.â Keeping the tone casual despite the haunting little pit in your stomach.
(Itâd been a shock to hear about it: for as long as youâve known him, Chilchuck has been eager to keep his life privateâeven from long-time friends. And thereâd been no signs of anyoneâexcept you and your little groupâcoveting his time and attention; no extra, unexplained toothbrushes, no brands you donât recognize in his pantry, no missed get-togethers.)
âHuh?â He gives you a look, confusion twisted in his features. The TVâs light illuminates a silver hair. âI wasnât with any girl.â
Your brow furrows. ââŠHis name? Their name?â
Chilchuck stares. This closeâwhere the minuscule twitches in his expression are noticeableâitâs strangely evaluating.
âYou know Marcille was joking when she said it was a date, right?â Heat sears along your cheekbones; embarrassment flushing hot under his gazeâthe realization of your mistake.
âOf course I knew,â you say stupidly. Chilchuckâs eyebrow quirks. âShut up. Donât look at me like that.â
âI didnât say anything.â
âWell, then if it wasnât a date, who were you with?â
âSenshi,â he says. âHe wasâwe, uh,â his eyes slide off to the side, âI asked him for a favor.â
âOh?â you hum, relief and mirth creating a warm hum behind your ribs. âLooking to get a side hustle as a cook?â
âNot even close,â he grunts, looking away.
âShould we start calling you our little master chef?â You nudge him with a grin.
âChilchuck is already quite good at cooking,â Laios pipes up without taking his eyes off the screen. âMaybe heâll learn to make something else after mastering ramen.â
âHeyââ
âRamen?â you ask, head tilting. âLike, the instant kind?â
Chilchuck splutters. âNo!â
âFrom scratch!â Laios beams. âSenshiâs said heâs been making really good progress since his first day.â
âOh?â you grin. âOur little master chef is gonna open a ramen shop?â
âShut up. No way. Not ever,â Chilchuck grumbles, the high curve of his ear a soft pink.
âI hope youâll make it for us one dayâI love ramen,â you say. âVery tedious, though, so Iâve never done it myself.â
His face scrunches, mouth pursing together like he wants to speak, but doesnât. His cheeks puff with air, releasing as a long, quiet sigh.
âOh, hey, so after ramenââyou lean a hand on the chairâs opposite arm, boxing him in with a cheeky little smileââyou should look into French onion soup. Itâs probably easier than ramen but caramelizing the onions takes so longââ
âYouâ!â he leans back, shoulders tense and eyes wide. âDonât go making requests before Iâve even cooked anything decent.â
âWhy not? I bet itâll be great! Youâre good with your hands, so soup is probably a piece of cake for you.â You watchâwith no small amount of pleasureâas Chilchuckâs face flushes with vivid color.
âGet away from me,â he mumbles, but his tone is so insincere all you do is laugh. He knocks a loose fist against the inside of your elbow. A surprised noise jumps out; you retreat back against the chair, rubbing the spot.
âMmh?â Marcille rouses with a sleepy hum. âWhatâre you requestinâ?â
âChilchuck is making us ramen,â you joke, relishing the way he knocks an admonishing leg against yours. âHeâs our little master chef.â
âOh, yeah. Did Laios end up spilling the beans?â Marcille yawns. Falin stirs, eyes fluttering. âCongratulations, you two.â
Chilchuck goes stiff beside you. âWhat do you mean?â you ask.
Marcille pauses, head tilting with a drowsy look of confusion. âHuh? Didnât you ask why heâs learning to make it?â she asks. Falin tugs her sleeve.
You blink. âNo. Should I have?â Marcille doesnât respond right away, head bent to put an ear by Falinâs mouth, expression pinched as they whisper. Then, with a sigh, she reaches up to stretch.
âNo. Never mind. Forget I said anything.â Laios is quick to grab her attention.
âHey, so are you actually opening a ramen shop?â you whisper to Chilchuck.
âYouâre such an airhead,â he grunts against his palm.
âIâm great,â you reply. His eyes meet yours, holding your gaze. When next he speaks, his voice is softâacquiescing easily to your jest.
âGuess you are.â

Dungeon Meshi episode 21, being heavily dialogue-driven, was pretty straightforward animation-wise and let Ryoko Kui's stunning art speak for itself for the most part, but that doesn't mean that there aren't still some GENERALLY-INSIGNIFICANT-DETAILS-TO-SCRUTINIZE-AT-ARGUABLY-UNNECESSARY-LENGTH.
There was a strong emphasis on hands in this episode, particularly the second half, starting with this cut of Laios resting his on the Minotaur's snout.
The animators have taken this simple little panel (on the right) from the manga (btw, people who know more about this than I do, is there a name for this type of panel, which in film would be called an "insert shot"?)
and turned it into this highly detailed tracking shot that heightens the emotional impact of this moment for Laios. It feels very similar to the shot of Kabru bringing a piece of fish to his mouth that introduced him to the series!
The theme comes up again when Laios does a little bit of blair-witching in the corner after being rejected by house-kitty-pilled Izutsumi,
and once again a few seconds later with this added close-up of Marcille's hand when she tries to read the magical aura of the area.
This one clearly makes heavy use of reference footage, to the point that it almost looks rotoscoped until you notice little details like this line that warps unrealistically at the heel of her palm.
But with smooth, realistic motion like this, little details like that are much less important than the overall feeling of authentic shape and movement. This can be seen in a lot of Masaaki Yuasa's work, which often favors consistent motion and more frames over super polished individual drawings. Here's a thematically appropriate cut from Ping Pong for example:
(This one might actually be rotoscoped, I'm not sure)
If you pause on any individual frame, the lines look wobbly and inconsistent, but it comes together as a whole to create something that feels authentic - real.
The heavy detail in the hand anatomy and the way the skin wrinkles around the knuckles in these cuts feels like a hard departure from Studio TRIGGER's signature heavy stylization, but these realistic cuts have popped up here and there since the start of this show, and I think they fit Dungeon Meshi really well! It can be jarring go straight from wacky bombastic cartoonsmanship to realism, but while it is a show about the hungriest hungriest himbo and his family of weirdos, it's also simultaneously a show about anatomy, ecology, and the horrors of the human mindbrain.
This was expanded from an excerpt from this video where I break down the whole episode, so if you want to continue wallowing in the sludge with me, consider checking out the video!
Thanks for reading.

#I feel like whenever I take an excerpt from my video scripts to turn into a post on here it ends up more fleshed out and over all better#because I have more time to think about it but also because I know some people on youtube will get mad if I talk about hands for 10 min XD#dungeon meshi#animation analysis#laios touden#marcille donato#mini essay#youtube#video#original#Youtube

in defense of kabumisuâŠâŠ..
addressing things I see people say about why kabru being shipped w mithrun is âbadâ or why their canon relationship âdoesnât mean anythingâ while also clearing up misconceptions of the characters some fans have
listen it keeps popping up and I just gotta do this or my brain will melt (if you donât see it around then god I wish that were me) thereâs an age gap!- erm thereâs also an age gap in farcille (ily), the most popular ship in the series...also chilchuck looks like a kid but a lot of fans recognize him as a dilf because of his relative age, so there should be no age gap discourse among adult characters because it feels so conditional tbh
kabru taking care of mithrun is racist!- marcille likes to take care of others as well. is that sexist, or just an aspect of her character?
kabru isnât treated like a servant, waiting on mithrun hand and footâŠI mean he gives mithrun a foot massage but no one told him to do all that lmfao
he's also not the only one to care for mithrun. pattadol is shown to worry for him and milsril was the one to start taking care mithrun in the first place after heâŠ...yâknow. speaking of which-
they probably met when kabru was a kid!- neither of them showed signs of recognizing each other the entire time mithrun was introduced nor when they were together. and im pretty sure KABRU of all people would show some kind of recognition if they'd met before. it's kabru!!! the people person!!! mr. "i-noted-down-50+-characters-in-this-dude's-backstory-for-fun-and-actually-enjoy-social-gatherings"
you would think some kind of memory would come back to him especially after hearing mithrunâs backstory if milsril had even told kabru about him as a kid. but nope. itâs just fan speculation unless there's a side comic suggesting otherwise that i haven't seen
mithrun doesn't care about kabru, his shapeshift double looked like shit!- it's obviously because of mithrun's (then) lack of desires that it looked like that, but they really grow on each other
i think it's safe to assume it'd look more like kabru after they spent so much time together (also laios can barely even remember kabru's name..also saw his face multiple times and didnât recognize him when they talked for the first time)
mithrun is racist!- heâs actually the least likely character to be racist since he lost his desires and that includes a desire for superiority over others. he even calls his past self out on that part of himself. the other elves in that side comic were being just as racist to shorter lived races but just didnât use âoutdated slursâ
(unfortunately literally every main character in dunmeshi is at least a lil prejudiced, but I believe itâs worldbuilding and a sign of the times rather than a reason ryoko kui is giving to hate each character)
taking care of others is a pain in the ass!- saying this as a reason kabru and mithrun shouldn't be together is basically saying disabled people shouldn't be allowed to have romantic relationships because they're a "burden"...if someone is actually willing to put in the work, then let them be.
that's not even all of their relationship, mithrun is the fighter of their duo and kabru would've been killed by the shapeshifter or something if he'd fallen down the hole on his own since he sucks at fighting monsters. mithrun helps collect ingredients for cooking every time, too (barometz fruits and griffin egg). he pulls his weight and then some!! i feel like people forget that part of mithrun a lot somehow.
+senshi literally cooks for everyone all time. it's kind of an important aspect of the narrative.
+also, while it is a popular fan thing I see around that kabru handfeeds mithrun, he literally never does lol this is mithrun using his own hands to eat:
also here we have him washing his own body
just saying because people like to treat mithrun like a baby even though the narrative respects him as a capable adult who also has special needs because of an accident. heâs captain for a reason
kabru hates taking care of mithrun!- not exactly, he was initially surprised and put off but got used to it quickly. iâm sure heâs grateful for all the times mithrun saved him from a monster and teleported them out of danger as well
he even starts doing âunnecessaryâ things for mithrunâs comfort and safety like when mithrun pushes himself too hard fighting, even after his mission to take care of him was complete when the canaries came back
here is even kabru resting while mithrun keeps watch (mithrun let him sleep for 5 hours before waking him up from the nightmare earlier, too):
there's nothing more to their relationship!- they actually have had a very tight and consistent dynamic since they met and they incite the most change within each other by the end. kabru is the one who inspires mithrun to create new desires so he doesn't waste away, and mithrun is the first person we see kabru being genuine with and it leads him to be more honest with others by the end instead of tiptoeing around everyone all the time (that mask was also the reason some ppl initially disliked kabruâŠ)
kabruâs relationship with mithrun is honestly so important for his character and vice versa, but itâs often disregarded because of one over exaggerated aspect of it (an aspect that isnât even the first way they interact with each other) or because people want to just straight up ignore it for some reason đ„Čđ„Č
kui dedicates many panels to them that don't particularly serve the narrative as a whole in order to demonstrate this and i think that's pretty significant
you're taking this too seriously!- as if i'm the first person in the world to be crazy about a ship or the characters đ i love analyzing text and it's upsetting to see them mischaracterized when kui lays out the characters so clearly and deliberately
also they end up touching each other like all the time and have the kind of canon validation most ppl can only dream of lol i feel so insane look at this:
and this is just when they're first getting to know each other cuz there's a fuckload more
kinda hard to explain how i don't actually need them to get married or whatever but i'd die on this hill for them and i enjoy their dynamic immensely
haha you thought you were reading ship discourse but it was actually a character analysis đ€Șđ€Șđ€Ș
also donât somehow take this to mean I think anyone has to ship them, I just need everyone to understand these accusations kind of donât make sense especially when they can also apply to other pairs or characters
bonus kabru just looking at mithrun:
#dungeon meshi#kabumisu#kabru of utaya#mithrun#dungeon meshi spoilers#i'd rather be able to enjoy their dynamic without feeling like i have to explain it but i keep seeing the same takes i cant do this anym-#i feel like i advocate for kabumisu so much because i see so many people mischaracterizing kabru to make l4bru work like how they want#by saying heâs obsessed w laios because he thinks heâs hot..but he was curious about his autistic behavior and eventually thought his lack#of malice would make laios the best candidate for becoming dungeon lord to prevent another utaya tragedy. tho eventually he doubts that#not that i care that he's shipped with laius. i just want ppl to see kabru for who he IS bc some still think hes nothing but a shady bicth#i think that's best shown through his dynamic with mithrun (other than his own words of course) so i want ppl to acknowledge it properly#like idk if I can trust popular fan interpretations of the characters or relationships anymore after the shit with toshiro bro đđ#not trying to attach kabruâs entire being to mithrun or anything either just..saying#hm i feel like the way i worded all of this will make some ppl mad. not my intention but whoops#anyways has anyone drawn ship art of senshi and mithrun yet? anyone?

look, the thing with Toshiro is that he is not a bad guy, I don't think he would work out with Falin no matter the case, but he's not a bad guy. He is just a guy in a foreign land, and he was sheltered as a rich guys son who has retainers instead of friends, he doesn't know how to act towards people.
He is friends with Laios, yes things in ep 17 came to a boil and Toshiro finally exploded, but that doesn't mean he really hates him. He might not be the best friend Laios imagined him to be, but he doesn't hate the guy despite what he said. Yes, I'm sure he was genuinely bothered by the way Laios acts like the rest of the party, sans Falin, but him exploding at Laios because it's the worst possible time is not the same as him secretly always hating him.
At the time things break bad, had just had a party wipe where not only did they lose to a dragon, the woman he was infatuated with didn't leave with them. He did what he thought was best, get skilled retainers and head back into the dungeon. He has been fighting monsters through the dungeon, not resting, sleeping or eating for days. He finds out the same girl he likes was revived with dark magic, then turned into a Chimera that tears through his retainers, and almost kills them. As he's panicking Laios keeps saying the wrong thing at the wrong time and he finally explodes.
People are not just who they are at their worst moments, just like they're not who they only who they are at the best moments in their life. He's not an asshole for believing Marcille is dangerous because of her using dark magic when he thinks it turned Falin into a chimera and the social norms is dark magic is evil. Especially when Falin became the most powerful monster in the dungeon capable of using magic that slaughtered his retainers and every other adventurer in a few minutes.
*Spoilers for the manga*
When he's had time to think and get some rest and food, Toshiro is on Laios' side, willing to fight elite elven dungeon specialists on his behalf.
Also I know Laios is the fandom's precious little autistic bean, but he isn't guiltless in their relationship. Sure, there was not a malicious bone in Laios' body, but it doesn't change that he saw a foreigner in a bar and blasted him with questions without asking him his name. Yes, Toshiro should have explained, but everyone in the Touden party is neurodivergent, you cannot change my mind. Sometimes it is easier to avoid awkwardness by not correcting people when they get your name wrong. Toshiro didn't think he's be a part of Laios' party for years, he thought it was a meeting with a stranger in a bar, and then he's Shuro for 2 years to everyone in the party and the adventurers community.
People are complicated, and they should be allowed to be. Toshiro might not get a lot of chapters, but it is clear he is not just some asshole who has secretly hated Laios, it's just at the worst moment of his life after a series of terrible weeks things come to a boil. The whole manga/anime has more nuanced characters than any I've read/watched.

okay i knew it was coming but its kind of killing me how obtuse people are being towards toshiro (im not fucking calling him shuro and honestly yall should stop with that too). should he have told laios how he really felt about him, sure, yeah, but im going to go off on a limb here and suggest maybe! maybe! he's been raised in an environment where it's actually like legitimately unheard of and taboo to be very open and straight forward about his feelings. the entire party has been calling him by a name that literally isnt even his own because he is so used to quashing down his own reactions to others. like i think other poc diaspora dunmeshi fans might agree with me here but he just reads like someone whos not bothered enough to correct every microaggression thrown his way. because that shit is exhausting. and after like five hours of laios bugging him about stories of his homeland why would he have a good opinion of him. genuinely. im not saying laios is entirely at fault but neither is toshiro. i love laios too but it is Very Weird that toshiro gets the brunt of their friendship's falling out (ill circle back to this)
also to preface this i am a farcille shipper so im. not pushing for falin/toshiro. but people acting like his affection for falin is somehow not relevant or he has no devotion to falin at all is CRAZY. immediately after being teleported out he threw himself back into that dungeon and didnt eat or sleep properly to rescue her. we literally watch him collapse from it. after multiple episodes emphasizing the importance of nutrition and caring for yourself and your take away from a man willing to toss that away is that he just. doesn't care for falin? why is he in the dungeon then? answer. quickly. granted he's not as onboard with the whole black magic thing but his concerns are literally valid and before we see falin chimera he seems to have been talked down from reporting them all for it. its the proof of his concerns of the use of black magic that he decides to go up and report them at all. his bond with falin isn't nearly as strong as marcille's bond but its also not nothing. ignoring that or minimising his own sacrifices is such a nasty bad faith disservice to his character.
speaking of bonds. toshiro doesn't hate laios. guys. his last act this episode was to give laios and the rest of the party (yes, even black magic user marcille) a way out of the hole that they'd already dug for themselves. fleeing to the east and leaving falin to the elves isnt the best case scenario but it is one that lets the majority of the party survive whatever's coming. its the realistic play. is this the act of a man who hates his former colleagues? is he wishing harm and further misfortune on them? his actions speak for themselves. you guys are being way too hard on toshiro and its really fucking telling. this goes for white viewers especially
#dungeon meshi#toshiro nakamoto#ive been in both laios and toshiro's perspectives re: their interpersonal miscommunication and did you know! its actually really hard to#tell people how you really feel. shitting on toshiro for not being able to tell a fellow party member hey you're really draining my social#battery is NOT the act of evil some of you seem hellbent on interpreting it as#seph.txt
