let’s say this is general advice from an adult who’s been in fandom spaces for over half a decade now
it’s courtesy not to make one’s dislike of a character/ship known in public spaces, such as tumblr or twitter. your friend’s dms are fine. the character/ship tag is not cool.
if you MUST post about it make it non-searchable for random users (censored/untagged) or use a filterable tag like what Cloudya’s started using for Elysia. Personally I prefer the latter as it’s more reliable to block out.
Example: Let’s say I dislike kiamei. The right things to do are
block the kiamei tag
block annoying people who talk about kiamei a lot
NOT SEND KIAMEI WRITERS/ARTISTS HATE. Even passive aggressive hate. What am I, a fucking child? Just deal with your feelings in private and keep your behavior steady. The internet is a public place, if you wouldn’t throw a rock at random people on the street you have no business doing it here.
avoid talking about kiamei in public, so kiamei enjoyers can just enjoy their thing in their corner and i can enjoy mine, because even if I don’t like their thing it’s unfair to spread negativity in a shared space
if I really have something to say about kiamei, especially if it’s critical or negative, i should avoid using the whole world like replacing it with k*amei (searchability) and/or tag it a filterable way like #kiameihate (letting others curate their experiences). the latter is handier, but less doable on twitter. on tumblr, you can filter both post content and tags in your dashboard settings. use this function.
This way, if people get pissed at me babbling my mouth about how kiamei is boring or whatever, they can follow a few simple steps to never have to see it again!
Ofc they can also block me, but maybe they like some of my other stuff so that’d be kind of a bummer for us both. It’s better to give your fellow fans more tools than less.
Remember, we’re all civilized people so even if you have different tastes, treat each other with kindness, compassion and understanding. Positivity breeds positivity. Being nice to others (and blocking the hopeless ones) will make YOUR experience better too!
