hey you are cool mutual i enjoy having and im sorry you aren't feeling 100% groovy! what are some of your favorite memories from when you were a child?
HMM oh god lemme think. i remember when i used to go to school in like. 1st grade being on the playground with a friend talking about video games we liked to play.
and when i was… 11 probably, we were remodeling a part of our house (well my dad was, i was handing him tools occasionally) and we talked for hours about dinosaurs. i also remember my dad had a room in the basement, it was supposed to be a workout room but we kind of just hung out down there talking about movies and singing old songs. fun times.
oh man i nearly forgot, one of my favorite ones. when the first avengers movie i think it was came out, me and my dad went to a midnight showing of it. there was barely anyone else there cuz it had been out for a few weeks so we went all the way to the back. when we left there was nobody else on the freeway, just us. that was really cool. we always went to the transformers and marvel movies together
#later that room became my bedroom. we fixed it up and everything#i had it for less than a hear before we moved away#i miss that house#i miss our front porch and garden and the built in shelves#and the crooked floors and doors that never closed right#and the old pellet stove#i can remember the sound the pellets made when my dad poured them in#i remember staring into the fire pretending i was a dragon#people talking to me#god

Through Fire and Ice Chapter 10
(Technoblade x Reader)
Chapter 10
< Prev Chapter | Next Chapter >
~~~~~~
“You’re going to love it when you see it.” You could hear the giddiness in Dream’s voice. His hands were over your eyes as you, Sapnap and Dream walked to where they had been building your house.
“Dream’s been working on this for days now.” Sapnap chuckled, “I helped a little bit.” You couldn’t help but smile at their excitement. You could feel Dream’s puffs of air hitting the back of your neck, his touch cool on your skin. When he led you to a full stop and he turned you, with his hands still over your eyes. He pressed his body against yours as he whispered in your ear. You could feel the heat rise up on your neck.
“I hope you like it,” His voice causing shivers to run down your spine. “A home fit for a princess.” With that he takes his hands off of your eyes and you open them. In front of you was a home planted inside the wall just like everyone else had, but this one had a tiny, enclosed porch, with little planter boxes for you to garden in. Big circular shaped windows on either side of the front door stared at you as if they were eyes. The dark oak door had a circular frame, and two blue lanterns hung from the overhang of the porch on each side.
“I-I can’t accept this Dream,” You sputtered out turning to face him.
“Sure you can! Dream’s done way better stuff than this for people.” Sapnap chimed in chuckling at the blush on your cheeks. “This is child’s play compared to what he’s even done for a lot of the people in our old village.” Sapnap scratched the back of his head. He didn’t go on when Dream cleared his throat, his eyes meeting Sapnap’s almost as if to tell him to shut up.
“If you don’t want to accept it for free, I’ll make you a deal? How do you feel about that?” Biting your lip, you look back toward the beautiful house just waiting for you to walk inside. Hesitantly nodding, your eyes flit back to Dream. You could see his grin behind the mask, the sight making your heart flutter. “I’m sure you’ve heard of the festival going on tonight? To mark the one-month anniversary of us all moving down here?” He cocked his head at you. You shook your head. Dream was the first one to bring it up. Niki was too busy to think about anything else other than cooking and helping out at the hospital, and Techno didn’t know much about social gatherings in general nor did he care much at the thought, let alone when they were going to be, but you were the same way.
“I don’t talk to a lot of people.” You shrugged and you heard him chuckle.
“Alright…” He cupped your cheek, “How about you come to the festival with me? Then it’ll be even.” His voice almost took on a sultry tone. You could see the hope in his eyes from behind the mask. You gave him a deadpan stare.
“That doesn’t really seem fair.” You were confused when Sapnap shook his head sighing at you. What did you do? This caused a laugh to come from Dream, his thumb stroking across your cheek.
“Don’t pay attention to him,” he jerked his head toward Sapnap. “You wanna come to the festival with me?” His hand drops from your face. You ponder over his question. You remembered Techno wanted to build your house for you, he had actually asked you what you wanted for your house. Guilt twisted in your gut about Techno, well at least he didn’t have to worry about another thing to do. Looking up at Dream you nodded, it was the least you could do to repay his kindness. He lifted his mask, and you could see the excitement in his green eyes. “Tonight is gonna be a good one princess.” He took your hand pulling you toward the house.
The inside of the house was well built, and somewhat furnished. Still trying to get over the fact that Dream had called you princess, you followed them and listened to every word they had to say. Sapnap kept showing you everything that he had built. Overall, it was a nice home, what drew your eye was the fully stocked bookshelves and you found yourself gravitating toward that more than anything.
“I know how you like your books, so I got what I could from around here.” Dream stood by your side as you allowed your fingers to trace over the spines of the books on the shelves. Sapnap muttered that he would be right back, and he left out the front door hastily.
“Why are you doing any of this for me Dream?” Your eyes never left the books on the bookshelves, but you could feel his eyes boring into you.
“I want you to know you have friends who have your back,” Dream explained after a few seconds of processing your questions. “Having a home is the first step to being comfortable.” He half shrugged. “This is where I want you to make your memories.” He let out a chuckle. “I think my first good memory of this place is when your face lit up when you saw it.” His shoulder nudged yours. You weren’t able to hide your blush from him and he led you to the small couch.
“Who made the furniture?” You ask your hand grazing over a nearby end table.
“George did,” Dream sat on the couch throwing his arm over the back of the couch. He kicked his feet out in front of him, one boot resting on the other. “He wanted to help at his pace.” You sat next to Dream, his face illuminated by a lantern hanging above your heads. He took his mask and haphazardly threw it on the coffee table in front of him. You felt honored that he took his mask off in front of you. He didn’t do that often it seemed.
You didn’t know how much time had passed but a golden clock on the wall glared at you when your eyes met it. Oh no… You were late in helping Niki out.
“Uhh… Dream, this has been amazing, but I have to go, please tell Sapnap I said thank you.” You pushed yourself up from the couch, and Dream stood with you. He towered over you, and his green eyes searched your face. “Where should I meet you for tonight?” His chuckle sent butterflies to your stomach as he cupped your cheek.
“Meet me here princess.” His tone was smooth, and his thumb brushed over your cheek. “I’ll come by sometime after your route.” Your cheeks heated up under his hand and you pushed forward giving him a hug which he returned. The hug enveloped you, and you gave a content sigh.
“Thank you for everything Dream.” You pulled away from him, tucking the hair in your face behind your ear. He fished around his pocket for a half second and he held out a set of keys to you.
“I’m glad you like your new home!” His smile was genuine, and you take the keys from his hands. It had been a very long time since you were able to call anywhere home. Returning his smile as you clutched the keys to your chest you moved past him and out the door. Booking it to Niki’s, you see a familiar red cloak standing next to your already loaded up cart.
“Heh?” Techno cocked his head at you. “You’re late nerd.” He teased. His eyes worriedly ran over your figure, not that you noticed. You weren’t hurt, but you usually were never late. Techno was wondering if he should have been out looking for you. He had gotten the cart prepared in your absence to keep his mind busy.
“Sorry,” you huffed out, your hands rested on your knees as you caught your breath. “Dream, Sapnap and George made me a house and Dream and Sapnap took me to see it.” You explained. This made Techno’s heart sink. When he wasn’t busy, he was planning out your house. His talks with you about your house were for nothing. You had even wanted to help him build it. Gritting his teeth, he turns to the cart, grabbing onto the handle to pull it.
“I see…” He kept his voice as even as possible, but you heard the disappointment in his voice.
“I know you wanted to do it, but this was kind of a surprise to me.” You shrugged nudging his shoulder with yours. “It’s not something that needs to be done anymore. We can spend our time doing other things, like mining.” He perked up at that as the two of you set off on your route. The two of you talking as you went.
“So, Dream said there’s a festival going on tonight do you wanna come?” You asked as you handed out the food to the people on the street.
“Is Dream taking you to the festival?” Techno peered down at you, as an old woman took the box of food from your hands. He had known about the festival. Phil had been planning it for a few days now. It wasn’t important to Techno, but the excitement he heard in your voice piqued his interest.
“Yeah, I’m assuming with George and Sapnap too. I want you to come too.” You shrugged as Techno struggled to swallow down the lump in his throat. “You’ve been working too hard on the mine and helping me. A night of fun is exactly what you deserve.” You beamed up at him. Techno didn’t know what to say. He didn’t want to say no to you, but he felt it would ruin your night if he was there. But… Like hell would he allow Dream to do as he pleases. If he didn’t show up, he would be giving Dream exactly what he wanted, and Techno was spiteful toward Dream.
“Alright…” He grumbled; he wasn’t liking the fact that he was going to have to be social. The smile that spread on your face when he agreed, was worth it though. He kept quiet as you greeted the people who approached you for their rations. You happily handed the people their boxes of food, waving them off, missing the way they would side eye Techno. Sometimes they even had the gall to look between the both of you. Dirty assumptions playing across their minds.
‘They are nothing.’
‘Slaughter.’
‘Protect her.’
The voices had their demands, not that he would give in to some of them. Even so, he would move in a nonchalant way, to obscure their view of you when their thoughts played out across their faces as plain as day. You kept making your way to people, handing them piping hot boxes of food. When you continually greeted people and asked about their days, Techno had zoned out, the small talk grating on him. You made it look easy. He wasn’t one for talking to people in general.
The two of you were deep in the residential area of the Burrow when you ran out of boxes. You thought that this was the perfect time to show Techno your new home. When the two of you were on your way back to Niki’s you pointed out the house to him, which caused him to huff in annoyance.
“Don’t be so grumpy,” You nudged his shoulder. “I’ll let you build onto it how bout’ that? Anything you want to build on it.” Your eyes met his and he nodded contentedly. A smile spread on your face as you fished around your pocket. You held the keys to your house in the palm of your hand. Separating the two keys you held one out for him to take.
“You’re letting me have a key to your house?” Techno cocked his head at you. His heart thumped in his chest, and he took the dangling key from your hand, tucking it into one of his own pockets. The voices in his mind sounded off, projecting his worries on how you were too trusting, giving him a key to your home.
“Yeah, why not? You’re literally my best friend.” An embarrassed blush spread over your cheeks, and Techno felt his heart flutter. You could feel his golden eyes on you, and you acted like you didn’t notice.
“Hm,” Techno grunted as he nodded in response, not knowing how to respond to that. His body gravitated closer to yours, the back of your hand just barely touching his. Resisting the urge to wrap your hand around his, you cleared your throat. There was a comfortable silence between the two of you until you got back to Niki’s bakery. You still had the second half of the route left to complete, but with Techno there you didn’t mind.
--
After finishing the route, both you and Techno, made your way back to your new home, to meet up with Dream. Looking around he wasn’t around your home so you shrugged and figured you could show Techno around the place. You opened the door and pulled him in. He looked around with almost uninterested eyes. While you looked up at him and deadpanned at the fact that his head almost hit the ceiling. You knew he was tall but… He had to be over seven feet tall…
While you were busy gawking at him over his height, he looked around his eyes scanning over your bookshelves. His eyebrows furrowed at things that he didn’t exactly like, little things, things that could be exploited. Small holes in the wood, that could be used to spy on you. He inspected the windows, to see how easily someone could get in. He already wanted to install a deadbolt on the front door the moment he walked in.
“I’m making you a weapon’s rack, for when we start making your weapons.” Techno stated. You knew better than to argue with him. You threw your hands up, while a smile pulled at your lips.
“I told you that you could add anything you like around here,” You leaned against the wall watching him. He entered the kitchen, staring at a blank wall at the end of the house. He had plans, but he was going to build a door to something similar to Phil’s ‘backyard’ for you.
A sharp knock rang out in the air. Standing up from the wall you open the door as you see Dream standing there, a flower vase filled with lilies, in his hands. You could see the grin stretching across his face when the door opened.
“Hey princess,” Dream chuckled as he held out the vase for you. “Are you ready to have the time of your life tonight?” You felt Techno’s presence approach behind you as you took the vase into your hands.
“Well, I’m flattered you noticed the crown on my head Dream, but you don’t really have to call me princess.” Techno bent down so his eyes were level with Dreams. His joke caused you to giggle as you walked over to the end table next to the couch. You completely missed Dream and Techno’s stare down. “Wouldn’t miss this night for the world.” Techno narrowed his eyes as he said it.
Dream’s hands clenched and unclenched, and his shoulders slightly shook in a silent anger at seeing the hybrid standing in front of him. The sight soothed Techno, and he chuckled and straightened up and cocked his head at Dream. He regained his composure when you turned back around to look at them.
“Thank you again for everything Dream.” You walked over to the two of them. Unaware of what had gone down, just a second before. “Are we all ready to go?” Dream cleared his throat as he nodded, his eyes scanning Techno.
“Yep.” Dream gave a small sigh as he turned around and walked down the steps of the porch, waiting for you and Techno to join him. You locked your door behind Techno, hearing a satisfying click. You were the first to descend down the steps to Dream. You planted yourself in between the two men as you started off toward the town square. “I didn’t think festivals were your thing Techno.” Dream spoke up, side eyeing Techno through his mask.
“Well, you see,” Techno started, “I’m tryin’ to be more social.” Techno gave a half shrug. “I also don’t want to miss out on all the fun.” Techno jeered at him; he was having fun ruining his plans. Dream picked up on Techno’s double meaning, and he grit his teeth.
“I see…” Dream nodded, “had I known I would have invited you myself.” You looked between the both of them, quietly listening to their conversation.
“I’m sure,” Techno rolled his eyes. It was going to be a long night…
--
The night was filled with friends, games, and drinks. Niki had joined your group for the night, opting to drink with you. Dream had found Sapnap and George and was conversing with them throughout the night. Every once in a while, Dream’s gaze would wander to you and he would give a tiny wave, and you would wave back. As the night grew on and you had gone to dance with Niki, you felt yourself stumbling, the haze of the alcohol overtaking your mind.
You spent most of the night with both Techno and Dream. Wilbur and Tommy kept Techno company when you weren’t with him. They noted the way he watched over you. Seeing his eyes scan the crowd for anyone who would do harm to you, as per the voices in his minds request. They were instantly scheming, on ways to get you two together.
“Techno, come on, Fundy’s got this drinking game, I think your girl’s playing with Niki,” Wilbur pulled on Techno.
“She’s not my girl, Wilbur.” Techno sighed. The large crowd around him, was almost too much. Between that and the voices, he felt a little bit overstimulated.
“Yet!” Wilbur said as he pointed upwards to accentuate the word. “Come on, it’ll be fun.” Wilbur raised his eyebrows at the hybrid. Techno looked back and forth between you and him. You had been mid drink when he looked over at you. He sighed, and nodded grumbling to himself as he made his way over to you. That was when Will noticed Dream heading over to your table as well. “Tommy, you gotta distract Dream.” Will’s head snapped over to Tommy as he nodded his head in Dream’s direction.
“What do you want me to do man?” Tommy asked his eyes landing on Dream’s approaching form. A look of panic almost reaching his eyes. Will just pushed him toward Dream in a hurry.
“Anything, just be yourself, and don’t let him near them.” Will whispered to him. He watched as Tommy walked up to Dream in his boisterously confident way. His arms outstretched and he gave a big toothy grin to the man he needed to distract.
“Dream! Mah friend!” Tommy practically shouted, slapping a hand down on Dream’s shoulder. “How ya been? Come on, I got something to show ya! We gotta find Tubbo!” Tommy pulled Dream away and Wilbur watched as Dream turned to look at both you and Techno. He held his breath when Dream tried to pull away, but Tommy had insisted. A sigh of relief escaped him as Dream gave into Tommy, following him to wherever Tommy was bringing him to.
Will headed over to your table only to sit next to Niki. He watched for Dream so he could distract him next if need be. You were already slurring your words, but you cuddled up closer to Techno practically leaning on him, and that brought a smile to Will’s face. Techno needed someone in his life and those close to him knew it, even if Techno denied it. Dream seemed to get everything he wanted, well… Not this time. Wilbur would make sure of it. At least for tonight.
~~
You pulled at Techno’s hands, trying to get him to come with you to the dancing area. Swaying a tiny bit, your eyes begged him, even when he looked over at the other dancers in discomfort. He could definitely hold his alcohol better than you. He didn’t want to deny you, but others could use this against you… He didn’t want to make you a target like he was.
“Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaassssssseee??” Your whine knocked him out of his thoughts. “When are we ever going to do this again?” Techno let a sigh out and he stood from his seat, leaving his cloak on his chair. His hand was still in yours as you led him to the other dancers. You got into your positions, this wasn’t any ballroom dance by any means, the music was too fast paced for that, people locked arms and spun around to the tempo of the music and the two of you followed suit. He kept you steady, even as you were tripping on your own feet due to the alcohol.
Techno reveled in your laugh as the two of you danced, the outside world was quickly shut out when he focused soley on you. Keeping you upright, keeping you happy. It made him feel things that he hadn’t felt in a very long time. Your hands on his arms felt right and that’s when he knew, that he would do anything for you, for your happiness.
All this time fighting, adventuring… None of it had the satisfaction of when you held him closer. When he caught you staring up at him, with a blush on your face. He had lived a life that many dreamed of, but he only dreamed of you, and he found you.
You stumbled on your own feet once more, and he was there to catch you when you fell, and you fell right into his chest. Both your movements stopped, as if time for the two of you was standing still, even as the others around you still spun in their dances. You laughed at your own clumsiness, letting out a little snort. That was enough to send Techno in a fit of laughter on his own. He watched as your cheeks reddened and you buried your face into his chest in embarrassment while you still laughed. This was a perfect moment that Techno would cherish forever.
~~
Dream walked back to the festival, a bit peeved at Tommy who was still yammering in his ear about something. Tommy had led him to Tubbo’s bee farm. To show him bees of all things, while he looked for Tubbo. Why was this so important now? Any other time would have been fine but right now during a festival? Dream shook his head sighing. He was supposed to be with you, and you were off doing who knows what with Techno.
“Tommy, I don’t actually give a fuck right now.” Dream interrupted Tommy’s ramblings as he turned to the boy to his right. This earned a scoff from Tommy, who put a hand on his chest trying to look affronted.
“Oh, come on Dream, that’s rude.” Tommy started to say but he was interrupted again.
“I had something to do when you pulled me away, isn’t that rude too?” Dream sighed rubbing at his eyes. “Listen, any other time would have been good, but this isn’t a good time.” He tried putting on a more comforting tone. “Just please let me go do what I need to do.” Tommy put his hands up and stepped away from him. He had done his job, maybe it was Wilbur’s time to shine. “Thank you.” Dream sighed and walked back to the main area where he had seen you last.
You and Techno were absent from your table and there still sitting at the table was Will and Niki looking in the direction of the dancing area with interest on their faces. Following their gazes, he clenched his fist at the sight. Techno stood there with you in his arms, you pressed up against him flush. You seemed to be falling asleep on him. Gritting his teeth, he just watches. Techno slid an arm underneath your legs holding you to his chest bridal style. That was enough for Dream.
He left, the festival still raging around him. He went to go find Sapnap and George. When he finally found the two, he felt numb and angry. After everything that he did for you… Techno? No… He just needed to step up his game. Show you just how dangerous Techno was. The memory that itched across Dream’s face was enough evidence that Techno was dangerous, that all he did was destroy things. He didn’t want that piglin to destroy you, and he would do anything to keep you out of that monster’s reach.
Sapnap and George greeted him, with Sapnap asking him if he had been with you. He shook his head. The disappointment that played across their faces was almost too much. George gave Dream a reassuring look.
“I’m sure you’ll get her; you’re Dream after all.” George offered. “And the Dream I know always gets what he wants.” He laughed as his grip tightened on Dream’s shoulder. Dream sighed. His eyes landing on Sapnap.
“Want to make some chaos?” Dream asked, he didn’t want to do what he was about to do. But he needed to pull out all the stops. Techno couldn’t control himself in certain moments and you would be in the middle of that if he didn’t stop it.
“What’s up?” A smirk pulled at Sapnap’s lips the moment Dream mentioned chaos.
“I think we should let everyone know we have a pig fucker in our midst.”
~~
You were out like a light in his arms, it was only when he unlocked your door with his key and he stepped in your new bedroom, did you wake up.
“Mm, Techno?” You still slurred a bit, but your eyes fluttered open as you focused in on his face.
“I’m here,” His voice was barely above a whisper. He brought you over to your new bed, reluctantly setting your body down. His eyes met yours and you reached out for him.
“Stay… Please…?” Your voice came out like a whimper, and he could do nothing but nod as he sat down on the bed, pulling the covers over you. It didn’t seem to be enough for you because you sat up, and tried to pull the covers on him, your head sinking to his shoulder as you tried but failed to do so. Techno let out a chuckle. This was something he was getting used to, but you were never so bold about it before. He laid down with you, after taking his mask off, your head still on his chest.
You felt the room spinning around you and the only thing that kept you grounded was Techno’s hold on you. It was quite a while before you spoke again.
“Thanks for tonight Tech,” You whispered into his neck, before planting a kiss to where his pulse could be felt. This made Techno freeze. Feeling your lips on his skin was something he had wanted for weeks now. But there was just one problem.
“You’re drunk.” Techno’s monotone voice rang out in the room. He pulled away to look you in the eyes. This made you giggle.
“So…?” Your eyes searched his, lips slightly grazing his. All you had to do, was push forward… And you did. Your lips crashed down on to his, and you saw the look of surprise in his eyes before you closed your own. Techno took a shaking hand trying to decide on deepening the kiss or pulling away from you. Unbeknownst to you, his eyes flooded black, his silver irises drinking the sight of you in, and his urges took over.
‘Ruin her’
‘Take her’
‘Make her yours.’
Between everything he wanted, and the voices it should have been easy to fall into the kiss. But no… He pulled away from you. Gently setting you on the mattress, he got up from the bed. His hands clenching and unclenching. He couldn’t… Not while you were like this.
“Techno?” The sound shattered his heart. You sounded hurt. If this went on everyone involved would regret it. He couldn’t do that to you.
“I-” Techno stammered. “I’m sorry…” With that he grabbed his mask and walked to the door. “I’ll be right out here. I’m not leaving… I just can’t do this right now…” He hoped you understood, hoped you wouldn’t remember this in the morning, but yet he hoped you did…
The rest of the night, was nothing but pain… He heard you cry yourself to sleep. He desperately wanted to go in there, kiss your tears away, tell you he wanted to be with you. But no, he listened to your crying on the other side of the door. He wasn’t sure if he could hold himself back if he went back in there. It was better if he kept an eye on you from outside your door. The voices shouting at him a million miles a minute.
The night crept by and Techno did not sleep.
A little gift for @roses-are-red713 , who has been very kind in reading my angst. here’s a bit of fluff to lighten the mood :)
The weight of three years rests heavily on Joe’s shoulders. He can’t remember the last time his soul seemed to ache as it does now- like a part of it was missing. Like it was trying to heal a hole it couldn’t fill. Now so, especially. The distance had been something he’d adjusted to after the first year. It settled into a familiar and dull ache in his chest. But now, knowing that Nicky was so close and having to simply sit and wait like the other half of his being, his moon and stars, wasn’t somewhere close.
It was enough to drive any man insane.
Deep breaths, he tells himself. He will be here soon. Joe’s leg bounces on it’s own. The buzz like electricity under his skin spurs him forward onto his feet. He had tried sitting, but never seems to be able to manage it for more than a few minutes at a time.
Andy was with Nicky, supposedly on a train to Budapest. Given the path that their current line of jobs has taken them down, Booker had recommended that they wait at the safehouse rather than meet them at the station. Logically, Joe knew he was right. His heart, however, was screaming at him to take off running into town.
Still, he remains at the house (if only for the possibility of missing Nicky and Andy on their way back). He searches for things to occupy himself. Anything that will soothe his fidgeting fingers. He picks up a few different books, but none of them can hold his attention for long. He comes upon one with writing in the margins, a quick and messy script nearly as familiar to him as his own. A finger traces lovingly across the scrawled words before he sets it down too. The reminder of Nicolo’s nearness does nothing to settle him.
He makes dinner for himself- Booker disappears into the night, most likely absconding into some dimly lit bar to escape Joe’s restlessness. He can’t say he blames him. Yusuf has never been one to hide his emotions well, and where Nicky was concerned all bets were off. The meal itself is simple, perfunctory. It keeps him occupied for exactly one hour before he’s on his feet again.
The time ticks on, seconds slipping like molasses. He paces. He cleans. He rearranges the books on the shelves and alphabetizes the spice rack. He tends to the meager herb garden along the outside of the house- the plants haven’t been taken care of in well over a decade and they’re far beyond any hope, but he pulls the weeds nonetheless. Joe busies himself with anything his eyes stop on long enough. Hours pass.
The sun slips below the skyline of the city. Booker returns, drunk stupid and missing his coat. There’s no sign of Andy and Nicky. Joe’s mind races, immediately searching for scenarios that kept them away- the train crashing into a felled log, dozens of black-clad mercenaries capturing the two of them and dragging them off to some reclusive prison where it will take Joe another three years just to find them again.
It’s nearly midnight when he finally puts on his coat and scarf, tucking a revolver into his waistband.
“I’m going to go find them.”
Booker groans, half asleep on the couch. “They’re fine, Joe. These new trains have delays all the time.” A hand shoots up to cover his face as Joe begins to light the gas lamps around the living room. “Those two are perfectly capable of handling themselves.”
“I am aware of that, Sebastien,” he hisses. He slings a bag over his shoulder. “But I can’t simply sit here and do nothing. Three years. Three years-” Doesn’t even lace up his boots, just steps into them and buttons up his coat. “I have to go and find them.”
“Go and find who?”
The door is open behind him.
Joe turns towards the voice. His entire body sags instantly as years worth of strung out tension leaves his body at once. He might have collapsed, were it not for his foot moving itself forward to catch him.
The words are breathless. “Nicolo?”
Nicky grins, face screwing up in a smile that all crowds into one corner of his mouth. He’s grown out his hair, and there’s a new smattering shadow of a beard creeping onto his jaw. The bags under his eyes seem deeper, somehow. He’s still got a travelling case slung over his shoulder, and Joe’s ring gleams on his finger in the light, and Santa Maria, Madre de Dio why is he still just standing there-
They both seem to have the same thought, because Nicky drops his luggage on the floor. They meet in one smooth stride, colliding with inevitable impact.
He takes a breath. Then another. Marvels at the way their arms wrap around each other, like somehow they had been built to hold- Nicky’s arms fitting around him like a tailored suit. Something that’s half a choked sob and half relieved laughter fights it’s way out of his throat as he buries his face in the crook of Nicolo’s shoulder. Does his best to breathe in deep and reacquaint himself with that scent that is so purely, completely Nicky. Joe thinks he can feel tears above where familiar lips press against his neck.
“Good to see you too, Joe.” Andy teases, squeezing around them to get into the house.
“They’re going to be insufferable.” Booker says pointely from his spot on the couch. His voice lacks any real heat behind it, though.
She smiles. “Missed you, Book”. She glances back to Joe and Nicky, still completely locked in their embrace. “Let’s give them a moment.”
Booker pretends to groan, but he snags Andy into a hug on his way up and they move out to the front porch together. He swipes another bottle from the counter, this time with the intent to share.
Joe and Nicky stand in silence. They are still. They sit in it with a relief like no other, to simply exist within the same space once again. Yusuf can barely stand to pull away, but he does so he can get a better look at his love’s face. Fingers thread through the hair that curls around the base of his skull, absolutely transfixed.”
“Do you like it?”
Joe scoffs. “Do I like it?” He trails off, unable to find the words to match the fullness in his chest, the way it tightens around his heart like a vice. Opts to meet their lips instead, reminding himself what it is like to taste love.
Nicky leans into it, humming in satisfaction. He strokes Joe’s cheekbone with a thumb. When they part, it’s with a contented sigh. They rest their foreheads together.
“Would that I could crawl inside your chest,” Yusuf whispers, overcome with the sheer enormity of what lies between them. “So that our hearts would never be apart.”
Nicolo shakes his head, ever so slightly. “They never are, hayati. They are never far.”
With only a slight pause to kiss Joe’s forehead, he continues. “As much as I love this coat on you, tesoro mio, I would much prefer to see you without it.” Fingers trace up his lapels, crystalline blue eyes burning where they rake across his face.
Yusuf grins. He pulls him back into the hallway and into his- now their- room, and shuts the door.
I just want to live in a Victorian house with my future wife and our multitude of cats and maybe a dog we adopted because they were at the shelter a really long time, or because they were missing a leg or an eye and other people didn’t want them. We’ll wear ridiculously opulent things just to sit and have tea in a little garden that we’ve built ourselves. We’ll use the fine china everyday just because we can. We’ll have a house full of second hand furniture, and rows and rows of bookshelves filled with comics and cookbooks and art books. There’ll be shelves and curio cabinets filled with jars and plants and oddities. We’ll sit and watch lightning storms from the front porch, and leave offerings to the fae and the old gods. We’ll build altars in quiet corners to the things that stand guard over our home and ask them to protect us just a moment more. We’ll make friends with the crows and they’ll bring us shiny things in payment. We’ll bake bread from scratch and go grocery shopping in our witchy best. We’ll leave love letters for each other in random spots because we’re just as in love now as we were the first day we met. We’ll talk in a language only we know, because really we’ve known each other for a thousand years. We’ll be each other’s confidantes and explore all the strange quiet places of the world together.
Bewitching Which Monster Chapter 1: The Home
The road to my new home was bumpy and long. I looked out the window from my cab and watched the trees go by. I smiled a little as I saw the wind start to blow up the colorful leaves that were lying on the dirt road. They swirled around within the air and landed on the back on the ground behind us. Oh yeah, I could totally find myself living here and practicing my magic for a while.
"So, what brings you all the way down here? Young women tend to go off to the big cities, not small towns with nothing but forest for miles." My driver tried to make conversation. I settled back into my seat and looked at her through the mirror.
"I inherited the mansion up this road. My grandparents left it to me in their will and I have been looking for a more secluded place surrounded by nature. It may help me work more productively and it's peaceful up here. I have a greater chance of finding what I'm looking for here too." I explained.
The driver kept glancing back and forth between me and the road. "So, you're their granddaughter, Anise Devane. They talked about you fondly whenever we met in the town festivals. I'm so sorry about your grandparents. What are you looking for exactly?"
I returned my attention back to the trees. "A plot of land to grow herbs and plants. And to grow as a person myself." I answered as honestly as I could. I couldn't tell her that I was a witch and I was going to plant plants for my magical practices. We witches are a lot more free to practice than we were many years ago but it was still a little bit of a taboo topic to talk about with normal humans.
"Well, you'll definitely find peace and quiet up here. Welcome to Hazelview. Small town, small people and a whole lotta nature. You'll fit right in in no time." She chiperily described. "Here we are!"
I looked out the front windshield to see the small mansion my grandparents have left for me. The foliage was covering a majority of the grey shingles and the curtains in the window were drawn back. The steel gate would've looked menacing if it weren't for the flourishing vines wrapping all around the bars. I remembered this old house. So many memories. Even if the mansion was huge for one person alone and secluded in the woods, it still looked warm and welcoming.
The taxi driver pulled into the white gravel driveway and stopped the car. I got out and looked up at my new home. The driver opened the trunk and started to unload my luggage for me. "Here you go, sweetie. Hopefully, your moving truck will arrive before you run out of clothes to wear."
"Thank you so much. How much do I owe you?" I asked as I reached for my wallet in my back pocket.
"Nah, free of charge. You're one of us town folk now. If you ever need a lift, just give me a call. See ya later, neighbor." She declined, finished unloading the trunk and sped away before I could insist or even say thanks.
I grabbed my bags from the ground and began to drag them inside the house.I pushed the gate open with my shoulder and made my way to the large, oak door. I put my bag down on the porch and fished around my pocket for the key.
The door swung open slowly once I unlocked it, creating a loud squeaking noise. I made a mental note to fix that soon.
The house was a bit dusty and there was a lot of furniture that was left behind. The wood would need to be shined again and the walls would probably have to get a new coat of paint. The house was on the older side, dating back a good century or so. It's had a lot of work done since when it was first built. It was always known as the Devane house. Always have and always will be.
I went up one of the staircases that elegantly curved towards the wall. As I walked up, I could see all the old pictures that decorated the wall. There were old, antique pictures of my grandparents, the generations before them and the generations after. At the very top of the stairs I could see my moms at their wedding and a few more family photos including me.
I finished looking at the pictures and headed to one of the upstairs bedrooms. Upon opening the master bedroom, I noticed that the room was incredibly dusty. If I was going to sleep in the room for the night I would have to clean up a little and get some fresh air in.
I settled my luggage on the king sized bed and went to open the window. It took a bit of strength but I was eventually able to get it open. The room already started to feel a lot better. But if this one room was like this then the others must be in the same condition.
Instead of unpacking immediately and resting, I went downstairs to find the broom closet. I grabbed a clean rag and some polisher to start clearing away the dust. I traveled from room to room, opening windows and rubbing down the old furniture. To my surprise, a bunch of rooms were pretty decent. They weren't as dusty as I expected.
In fact, the bedrooms almost seemed recently lived in.
I shrugged it off, remembering that my grandparents would occasionally run a bed and breakfast out of their home for extra money. They must've cleaned the guest rooms last before they passed away. As my grandparents got older they began to sleep in smaller, separate beds. It would explain why the master bedroom was so bad.
I continued to make my way through the house, dusting and cleaning anything I could reach and opening windows to air out the house.
The house creaked slightly with each step and sometimes it did it by itself. I knew it was an old house but it almost sounded like someone else was living here still.
Again, it was probably just nothing. It didn't stop me from being a bit nervous though.
The entire house was mostly dust free and promised that I could rest easy tonight without suffocating. While I was cleaning the house I found my grandmother's Witch Room. She left a bunch of mason jars with herbs, plants that were slowly dying in their pots, and other materials scattered around like crystals and feathers and inks.
I went back to that room and looked through the scattered papers along the floors and shelves. They were all in Irish Gaelic with little English words scattered here and there. Old sketches flooded the papers as well.
I gathered them all up and stacked them on top of the wooden table. I promised myself to check them out later after I got settled into the house. It was getting late and I haven't eaten since the morning. I had to call my moms too to let them know I was safe.
Pulling my phone out of my back pocket, I called up a pizza place to order something quick. I was told that my mushroom and bacon pizza will be ready and delivered in less than thirty minutes. After thanking the person who took my order, I sat down at the family dining table on the first floor to Facetime my moms.
It only took about two rings before they picked up. My mom's red, frizzy hair was in a sloppy bun and she was wearing a black tank top covered in dirt. She probably started cleaning the house as soon as I left. She tended to clean when she was stressed, nervous or worried.
Her cool, ocean blue eyes lit up through the screen as she saw that I was perfectly safe and managed to make it to the mansion. "Hi, Ani! Oh, Olivia! Honey, Anise is on the phone!"
I could hear my ma run towards mom, excited to finally see me after waiting for me to get here. Her face appeared next to mom's, almost pushing her out of view. Her walnut wood skin was covered in sweat and showed signs of being slightly sun-burnt. She was most likely working in the garden before I called. "Anise! Oh my gods you're alive!"
"Yeah, Ma. I didn't die on the way here. Thank you for worrying about me. Once I got here I cleaned up some of the dust and opened the windows to circulate the air." I joked and explained.
"My baby is growing up! I already miss seeing her freckles that are scattered across her nose and cute cheeks, Avery!" Ma exclaimed to Mom, talking about me like I wasn't listening.
Mom pushed her away so she could have some camera time. "Don't you think I'm gonna miss her asking me to help dye her hair dark purple? I miss our baby too, ya know! Anyways, Ani, make sure you call us whenever something goes wrong, okay? Your ma and I love you very much and we want to help you get used to living on your own."
"I'll send you some boxes of purple hair dye, herbs, books, and cookies every month, Ani. If you need anything else that you can't afford on your own just call us and we'll send it over." Ma continued, her smoky quartz eyes tearing up.
I gave a small giggle and smiled. "Got it, ma. I'll be fine. I'm nineteen for crying out loud! I can take care of myself so there's no need to worry."
Mom frowned. "Of course we're gonna worry! We're your moms!"
The doorbell suddenly rang and I hovered my finger over the hang up button. "My pizza is here. Gotta go! I'll call you guys when the moving truck and handyman gets here. Love you!"
"Love you too, sweetie! Enjoy your pizza." They said goodbye. I hung up and went to answer the door.
I paid for the pizza and tipped the delivery guy. As soon as they left I close the creaky door and headed to one of the living rooms to watch some television. My grandparents should've had Netflix on all of the televisions as an app since guests would've most likely requested some modern media.
Turning on the TV, I sat down on a dusty, pink rose couch and tried to enjoy my pizza and Earth documentary. Most people my age weren't really in to documentaries, but I personally found them fascinating. It was like reading a nonfiction book but much quicker and much more entertaining.
Due to me watching mainly documentaries, my brain is filled with all sorts of facts from science to history and anything in between. It definitely made high school a breeze for me. It also helped convince my moms to let me take online college classes instead of going to an actual college.
An hour later, the cities episode ended and my pizza was completely gone. I checked the time and saw that it was 7:00 pm. Like the responsible adult I was, I got up, cleaned my mess and went to get ready for bed.
I decided to inspect the master bathroom before stripping down and using it. It would've been terrible if I noticed mold or spiders while I was bathing. To my astonishment, the bathroom was perfectly polished and cleaned. The marble counter was clear and dust-free, the shower was sparkling as well as the freestanding, claw-foot tub and even the towels seemed fresh.
Perhaps my grandparents still preferred to use the master bathroom?
I grabbed my bath essentials and began to draw up a bath. While the tub filled up with warm water, I put some music on from my phone. The sound echoed through the massive bathroom, almost drowning out the sound of the running rush of water from the faucet.
With a little bit of bubbles, some candles and crystals and some rose petals that I packed with me, I was ready to relax.
I slid right in and adored the quiet time I was able to have. There weren't a lot of opportunities to relax like this back when I lived with my moms. But now I was able to take a bath like this whenever I wished.
Just as I poured some lavender shampoo into my hand, there was a loud creak and footsteps from outside the bathroom door.
My heart sped up, my breathing stopped and I froze. There was no way that that was just the wind or the house settling. Unless I was going crazy, that was a stranger.
I stopped the music on my phone and sat in the bath in silence. I wasn't a particularly brave person so taking the time to muster up some courage to see if there was an intruder was necessary for me. With a few deep breaths and a reassuring nod to myself, I got up and grabbed a towel to cover myself with and began to check out the noise.
I opened the door very slowly and peered out. It didn't seem like anyone was in the bedroom and there was no evidence that anything was tampered with. I opened the door wider and noticed something on the wooden floor in front of me.
Bending over, I picked it up and held it in my hands. It was brown fur.
It suddenly hit me. During the few times I visited my grandparents I noticed that a few stray cats would occasionally roam around the property. Most of the windows from when I opened them up were still open. One of the cats must've found their way in and began to explore the mansion.
It was possible that the cat stepped in a particularly creaking spot in the floor and scared itself, causing it to run away. I knew that I would get freaked out if I heard a foreign sound seemingly coming from nowhere.
Hopefully, the cat would find its way outside without me intervening. The last thing I would want is to scare the poor thing with my presence.
I shrugged and went back to my bath. I wasn't able to enjoy it like I first did but it was still kinda pleasant. My time bathing was over within several minutes and I drained the tub. The only thing I packed as pajamas was an over-sized shirt that said "Inconceivable!"
Within a few minutes, my teeth were brushed and my purple hair was let loose from being in a tight bun all day. I changed the sheets on my bed with fresh ones I found from a linen closet. I made sure that all the windows were closed and all of the doors were locked before getting into bed.
Man, I was so tired. It's been a long day and I still had a long list of things to do. The moving guys and handyman were supposed to show up sometime tomorrow, I had to do some grocery shopping and budgeting, clean some more of the mansion and more.
It was best to get some sleep and be ready for all of that in the morning.
I rolled on to my side to find a more comfortable sleeping position and shut my eyes. Before I could fall asleep, I could feel the bed dip from extra weight and a body hovering over me. I snapped my eyes open and looked up to see a strange man with deep red eyes and white fangs inches away from my face. I couldn't help but scream.
"AHH!"
WICHITA CLEANING COMPANY OFFERS THE FOLLOWING MILITARY HOUSING FINAL INSPECTION CLEANING SERVICE FOR OUR VALUED CUSTOMERS ● First, spray all the bathtubs and shower stalls with the cleaner and let it sit. ● Next, spray the stove or use the self-cleaning option beforehand to burn off layers of grime. Let the cleaners do the work for you. It will save on scrubbing time! ● One important trick I learned is to put the stove grates inside the oven for the self-cleaning. This gets them super clean! Don’t waste time trying to scrub them. ● Once you have these cleaners doing their job, start the inside home cleaning with the upstairs or back bathrooms. Wipe down the sink, vanity, mirror, and toilet. Scrub the bathtub with the magic eraser. ● If there is any hard water build-up on the shower stall, faucets or shower heads, you can use a product such as CLR Bath & Kitchen. ● End this room with mopping the floor. ● Move to the bedrooms on the second floor and wipe down the walls. Use the magic eraser for marks and handprints. ● Wash the windows and inside the window sills. ● Dust the built-in shelves inside closets and finish with a vacuum of the rooms. ● Wash the staircase, the railing, and vacuum the staircase. Do the same thing to the rooms downstairs: windows, walls, closets, and bathrooms. ● Appliances are also included in our military housing final inspection cleaning. ● Finish the inside of the house with the kitchen. The stove is easier for us to wipe down now. We use SOS pads, magic erasers, and even gently use a razor to remove any stuck on grime, using care not to take off the finish. There are a few glass cooktop cleaners. Be sure not to miss the stove hood and vent cover. ● Moving on to the refrigerator, try our best to take the shelves apart. We have found it best to wash them with dish soap in the sink and spray out the empty inside of the refrigerator. Be sure to wipe the down the seals, ice maker, and trays. ● Finishing touches: wipe down the countertops, inside and out of the cabinets, on top of the refrigerator, and the tops of the cabinets if you have that extra space up there. Wipe down the outside of the microwave and dishwasher. For the inside of the microwave, spray a cleaner and turn it on for a few minutes to loosen food particles. Finish with sweeping and mopping the floors. ● Lastly, we don’t forget the outside of your home and garage! Sweep the inside of the garage and be sure to remove all belongings. After we rinse out your trash cans, many housing offices will want you to return all bins, both trash and recycling, to the garage. Be sure to have the lawn mowed, clean up any yard debris, and sweep your front entry way/porch area.
Chapter 4
Ashvale sat on the northern coast of Morosa, just far enough south to be accessible all year round by large vessels. The cool waters upwelling from deep chasms offshore brought waves of nutrients to the shore line. For many years the rich and bountiful waters had sustained a large and healthy fishing industry in Ashvale, despite the near permanent ice field that lurked just a few hundred metres off the edge of the water. Strong, cold winds blew down from the very north, providing power to the huge triangular sails of the fishing fleet. These winds had stripped the surrounding land of all but the hardiest of gorse and heather so that the town was visible from miles around. The buildings here were made of various materials, houses standing until they had become too damaged by fierce storms, and each one built softly rounded to deflect the blows of the wind.
Ashvale had a single central high street along which all houses and buildings were built along. At the end of the street lay the dockyards and the harbour wall, small and large vessels rocked in the gentle swell as the huge stone harbour walls bore the brunt of the tide. Rickety pontoons spread out across the entire harbour in a complex maze, with huge vessels tied to the harbour wall itself, with the smaller vessels sheltered near the shore. A rough pebble beach lay either side of the dock access that was covered in equipment set aside for mending. Jennie breathed in the brisk air and wrinkled her face, the stench of rotting fish wafted off of the beach, covering any smell from the cargo that was being off loaded next to her. Walking out onto the cobbles she found her foot crunching into the beach, into the skeletons of hundreds of fish. The corpses lay in a thick mat at the high tidal mark, a stark white line against the dark pebbles. Using a stick, Jennie separated one of the skeletons from the mass. Huge fine rods extended from the back, side and tail that were barely thicker than a pine needle. Many of the rods had been snapped or bent, presumably whilst the animal was alive, Jennie thought. " That there is a Proelius skeleton stranger. A fine fish, in taste and looks, wouldn't like to fight one though," an old woman sitting at the top of the beach called down to Jennie. The woman was small, pinched and bird like and radiated warmth from her smile, like a happy russian doll bundled in a huge red parka jacket. Beside her was a large wicker basket into which she was slowly loading perfectly smooth pebbles. "It doesn't look like a fighter, what with all these spines, and it looks like there wouldn't be much meat on it either." Jennie replied back, hooking the fish by its eye socket to get a better look at it. " Them fish don't like others in their homes, see? Shame there's too many of 'em in the water, they can't help but fight. Tide brings what's left of 'em into the harbour and dumps 'em here." The old lady mused, " Stinks the place to buggery!" She laughed softly and began to stand up. " Say, have you got somewhere to stay tonight? Because I 'avent seen you round here and I wouldn't want a kind girl like yourself to be out and about this evening." " Erm, no, ma'am, not yet, I was hoping to get a room in the hotel this evening. And besides I wouldn't want to be a burden." Jennie smiled. " Then you'll 'ave great difficulty doing that Miss, hotels are always booked up on this night, and besides they'll be keeping a few rooms aside to help stragglers. Please I insist." The woman nervously tweaked her face into a smile. " Erm, I don't know Ma'am, I would have to think about it first." Jennie replied. "Well if you take me up on my offer, my name is Doris and my house is the little blue wooden one about halfway up the street." She smiled sweetly and begun to hobble back up the street, clutching the basket of pebbles she had been collecting. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When Jennie got to the small market stalls were already beginning to pack up their goods. Hurrying over to the grocer Jennie grew curious about the rush. " Hi, What can I get you today Miss?" The grocer asked with a hand on his hip. " Errr, I'll have a pound of apples, one of bananas and oh the same of cherries please, " Jennie asked, " Hey, what's going on this evening? Why is everyone packing up their stalls so early?" The grocers body tensed and his shoulders lowered, for a moment he glanced down at the floor and shuffled awkwardly. "It's the red tide Miss, no-one wants to be outside then, at least unless they got a death wish. And before you ask any more questions, we don't like talking about that outside. It's not safe nor polite. Now that will be 10,000 Pokédollar," He stared Jennie down with burning eyes, " Now it's going to get dark soon, I recommend finding a place to spend the night, since the hotel will be full now." He quickly gave Jennie her bags before beginning to throw crates into the back of his produce van as fast as he could.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With no choice Jennie walked up the road to the old woman's house. She found it easily enough. It carried the same simple wooden slat style of the other nearby homes but had been painted a soft duck egg blue. Stepping off the street and through the small wrought iron gate she found herself in a tiny but well loved front garden filled with decorative shrubs in neat little borders. Piled up against the front wall was a small pile of chopped wood, kept dry by the overhanging porch. Jennie knocked on the door and waited patiently as she listened to the older woman slowly removing all the locks from the door. Gently the door opened to reveal the old lady, who inspected Jennie for a second before a moment of recollection passed over her face. " Ooooh hello Dearie, come in, come in. Just put your stuff down next to old Mira. The kettle is just boiling so sit down and get warm." Doris smiled as she re-bolted each and every lock on the heavy wooden door, " Actually Dear, could you get the top deadbolt for me, it's been a while since I have been able to reach it and it would bring me a lot of comfort knowing the door was firmly locked." Once Jennie finished with the bolt she turned around to take in the front room of the house. It was small but cosy, painted in a warm auburn colour with every surface draped in thick soft throws. To the very back she could just see a narrow kitchen complete with a polished white range cooker and rows of shining copper coloured pans. Nestled against the right wall was a large, round wood burning stove, atop which sat a large kettle that was gently simmering away. Around every other wall were stacks of shelves covered in old fishing hooks and pieces of boat equipment. Mira was an aged Torkoal who was sat in a concrete bed in the near left corner near the stairs. She was sleeping with heavy breaths and twitched every now and then in her dream. Above her was a glass cabinet full of delicately arranged smoking pipes. " Have the pipes caught your eye my dear? They belonged to my husband, rest 'is soul. When 'e died dear Mira wouldn't move from the mantelpiece where 'e kept 'em, silly old reptile. " Doris shook her head wistfully, " But you don't want to be bored by my old musings, come away from the door and sit over here, the red tide will begin soon and I don't want you near the door." Slowly the kettle began to whistle and shake around on the stove. "Tea dear?" " That would be great thank you. " Doris slowly poured the hot water into each mug and dropped a tea bag into both before bringing it over to the coffee table. She had already placed a saucer, a small jug of milk and some spoons out. Gratefully Jennie took the mug and warmed her hands with the soft warmth of the porcelain. As she took a quick sip she saw Doris stare at the door as an eerie quiet hushed the normal sounds of the sea. From beyond the waves came a long, deep moaning and a hushed crying noise. Ice crept up the window panes, waking the sleeping Torkoal, who rushed over to her companion with surprising speed. Pre-emptively Jennie released Ninetails who began to growl at the door. Outside the mist thickened until Jennie could see nothing but whiteness. Occasionally she heard the sound of dragging chains and wood. Then came the eyes; blood red and glowing with anger. They streamed past the windows in jerky, awkward movements as though they were swaying with an invisible tide. " It has begun." Doris whispered as the front door began to rattle, " But don't worry dear, that door has held them off for many years without fail. Oh my, in all this rush I never asked your name." " Er-er-er-er Jennie." Jennie stuttered, taken aback by the old lady's sudden calmness. " What is going on? What the hell are they?" " This is the red tide, the night where we must remember our mistakes." " But- What? How?" Doris sighed, "well, I suppose it won't hurt to tell you..."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Long ago the town was even more prosperous than its modern day port, they were famous for hauls of Delcaedes, huge animals with streamlined bodies and triangular fins. The creatures provided work for entire families, fathers and sons would haul entire Delcaedes from the water and bring them to their wives and daughters on the harbour wall where they would cut away the fleshy fins and discard the rest of the animal, still living into the waters just outside of the harbour. As the town grew, more drastic measures were taken and the Delcaedes were herded into bays just around the corner from the town where the fishermen would collect the fins on mass, leaving the animals to drown. But overtime the numbers dwindled until the hunt could only happen on one day of the year. Eventually the fishing had to stop, no Delcaedes could be found and the hunt had to be called off early. The morning after the failed hunt a thick fog rolled into the town along with the cries of thousands of the animals. The fishermen debated setting out into the fog until the sun had begun to touch the horizon. One young man volunteered to look and set out in a small row boat equipped with the brightest light. Hours passed and the number of people waiting out the night dwindled until dawn when only the man's wife remained behind. As the sun rose over the horizon the fog began to clear. Drifting battered into the harbour was the row boat, washed in on a tide thick with red blood. To the woman's horror she found her husband inside the boat, dismembered and struggling for breath against the pain and blood loss. At his feet all of his limbs had been carefully arranged into the basket he had intended to use for the Delcaedes. Enraged the fishermen set out with the encroaching fog of sunset that evening to gain retribution for the young man. Again their vessels returned with the fog's retreat at dawn. Limbs torn off and arranged in the same way. With the sunset of the third day the fog rolled further into town and brought the Delcaedes. With them they brought water, flooding the town with a great sticky red wave. They watched for movement and dragged all who touched the water down into it, drowning them in blood. For the rest of the night the citizens of Ashvale cowered in their homes, praying that the waters would recede and leave their loved ones unharmed. It did not. The tide ebbed with the rising sun, revealing each murdered townsperson. Some had been mutilated in the same way as the men on the boats; Others were tangled in fishing nets and traps, their lips blue from asphyxiation. Most had been drained of every drop of blood in their body, helping to fuel the surge of the tide. The next year, on the anniversary of the first red tide the Delcaedes surged back into town to repeat the slaughter, taking any who had not learnt their lesson from the previous year. The Delcaedes returned every year after that until the residents of Ashvale had learnt to lock their doors and hide inside for one night of the year.
[Excerpt from Jennie's notes: The Delcaedes don't take a single form like many other Pokémon. They appear to take the form of many different species with many different death methods. Peering through the upstairs window I was able to make a few rough sketches of the animals and some of them do seem to be missing their fins. However they seem to have replaced them with disturbing ghostly versions of them. I'm afraid of what some of the other animals in Morosa are like if the field guide I am using rates them as a least concern dangerous animal.]
Happy news! Last week I made you suffer, looking at the messy, scary, horrible images of my poor cottage’s dirty little secrets…but now I’m going to show you the BLANK CANVAS!
Tomorrow morning we start to put the house back together, so this will be one last look back at where we started, where we are now, and a hint of where we’re going!
This is where the old ugly sunroom with more windows than walls stood; it still looks messy but it’s a beautiful empty canvas to me! I always find it interesting how SMALL a slab appears; it’s hard to imagine how large the room can be just looking at this, right?!
For starters, the slab on the right side will be framed up to bring the floor level with the larger slab…..and that new rectangle will form the all new master bedroom. (I’ve asked the guys to use screws in securing the subfloor to prevent that awful squeak you sometimes get from a new wood floor!) If you didn’t catch that, you either have to use many more nails than you’d think were needed, or plenty of screws when securing subfloor to joists…otherwise, depending on what your finished floor material is, you might have an annoying squeak. This is not the place to let your carpenters scrimp!
Other notables from this picture:
The window will be removed (it’d be in a closet)
The door will be removed; the new door will be a couple of feet to the right of this one
We will not replace the brick where the door comes out because that will be in another closet, and the other side will be the bathroom
We will tie in the roof with a dormer roof, leaving the interior ceiling vaulted
All the small boxwoods were removed around the perimeter; they would be in the way anyway, and will be replaced with curvier plantings
Goodbye, old sunroom, complete with astroturf, vinyl mini blinds, stinky old sofa and rickety ceiling…here come this slab’s new digs!
The breezeway is now opened up!
If you really couldn’t picture it before, this is where the secret-garden arched gate will now open up to the pathway, and the back yard
The approach to the kitchen door will now be much prettier and more inviting…details to be determined by how much of the budget remains once the “have-to’s” are handled…alas, the realities of remodeling
**This afternoon I am working on the re-design of the one-car garage; I think we’re going to open it up to a very nice and bright carport-under-roof. Even once we enlarge the opening and put a new garage door on, it’ll be a little tight in there for my suv….I’m not claustrophobic, but I have a few good reasons for thinking this will be a more workable use of the space….stay tuned on that one!
A few more exterior notes:
This concrete walkway, and some large bushes had to be removed (I’ll try to save the remaining ones); the main reason is that all of the bushes are too close to the house; they need to come out at least a foot to make the house less enticing to termites (wait’ll you see what’s coming up in that department – ugh!) But also, the electric service boxes are all on this front wall – ugly! I will need to do some sort of visual block, while leaving them accessible….and there was no way to proceed on that with the walkway where it was…..now it resides in the blue dumpster. And again, plantings will be curvy
Now this one I love! Do you remember the ridiculous closet in the bedroom/office? Here…let me remind you…
You can’t really tell from here, but this exercise in ridiculousness was added to that stoop you see in the above picture. So the closet (an extra one, I might add) was added when an exterior door to this stoop was removed. Did they seek more security or truly more shoe-storage space?? I’ll never know, but what I DO know is that it ruined the symmetry of this side of the house! See if you can tell from this picture:
We’re looking at the sticks-out-like-a-sore-thumb white siding; see how it ruins the centering of that picture window? And if it becomes a stoop, as it was in the beginning, then it balances out the porch on one side of the window with the smaller porch on the other. It also keeps that window to the right of the siding from looking like it was squeezed in at the last moment…..so, we have removed the silly closet and will be restoring the stoop to it’s rightful place in the architecture of this ’60’s cottage!
(by the way, please keep in mind the door is not painted or trimmed out, and we will add an L-shaped iron support to match the other porch)
Just one more detail to note: we removed the boxwoods from in front of the picture window, for all the reasons noted above! There will be an inviting window seat on the other side of the glass….we’ll be giving the viewer something much prettier to see from the window seat eventually!
Who’s up for a little before and after of the inside, before it gets it’s facelift?
Breezeway
Kitchen
Living/Dining Room
Laundry Room
Bedroom/Office
Miscellaneous notables:
We have removed the kitchen and future master bath windows!
This is fortunately OLD termite damage, but as you can see, it was pretty extensive! Although it’s not an active infestation, it’s obvious the integrity of the structure was compromised by those hungry critters…..so better to replace the studs NOW while we’re at it. It’s amazing the damage they can do – and that’s a GREAT reason to remember to keep your perimeter plantings at least 15″ from the exterior walls!
By the way, our inspection revealed that there WAS an active infestation of termites in the garage, which has all unfinished walls….a termite paradise of exposed raw wood! I had the garage treated RIGHT after closing!
VINTAGE VANTRONICS HEAT DETECTORS!
This is kinda cool! Every room in the house had these heat detectors, an early version of smoke detectors, mounted above the door; none of us had ever seen them before! Looking on Ebay for info and value, I only found someone selling an original instruction booklet complete with a signed estimate! Since these were original to the house, I’m guessing (and planning to find out) that this was state-of-the-art technology in 1961! And yes, I bought the manual; I’ll put these BACK on Ebay with the manual and signed estimate….and just see what happens! Somehow I doubt if the proceeds will pay for my countertop upgrade….but it’ll be fun to watch!
The too-short, potentially spider-filled potting shed has been removed…hopefully the budget holds so I can put an urban cottage-worthy new version here!
I’ll leave you this time with my Saturday ‘find’: I went on a search yesterday of area antique, resale and junquetique shops to find an inspiration for what WOULD be the buily-in linen cabinets in the hall bath. There’s a good-sized space there, where we removed cabinetry that just didn’t make much sense for how we live today. Of course, I haven’t wanted to do the ordinary….which consists of either expensive standard cabinets or an inexpensive built-in closet with shelves. One reason I nixed the second option is that the door or doors would be difficult to open, being right behind the main entry door to the bath (this is most likely why they built that strange arrangement of cabinets in the first place) I had toyed with the idea of a pocket door to the bath, but they don’t often work well for long, and they pretty much never lock well! Nope! I grew up in a large family where the bathrooms were a premium….a locking bathroom door is essential!!!
Sooooo…. I went in search of another solution. Having sold antiques for years, I remembered often having oddball English pieces with beautiful wood and glass doors. Too often the piece of furniture was small and impractical (or large and impractical) for the way we now live, so the piece didn’t sell well, and eventually sold cheap. I loved all those glass doors! I was hoping to find some fabulous glass doors on a piece that I loved; we’d then use only the doors on the cabinet we built. The problem, I knew, was that we couldn’t easily re-use drawers. So I went searching, knowing the right thing would show itself. It did! Here’s a picture in the consignment shop:
….and here is what I’ll do with it: First, it is missing shelves, so we’ll make sturdy wooden shelves so I can fill them up with white towels and linens….mmmmm! This width and depth is perfect for the space I have, as it will fill up just enough space, but leave enough room to definitely look like furniture. The only dimension I don’t like is the height; it’s only 5′ tall. Soooooo….we’ll remove the feet and build a “box” to set it on, raising the total height to 7′; the ‘box’ will contain cubicles for baskets most likely (I still have to design this, and details tend to appear while I’m drawing). Voile’! For less than $200.00 total, and likely some new chalk painting (tbd), I have the bathroom storage I needed….with style!
I’d love to know your thoughts on using furniture in the bathroom, and this piece in particular; do you have ideas for me? All input is welcomed! Leave me your insight in the blog comments below, ok?
Once again, thanks for joining me on the journey; if you just happen to know someone who is looking to sell or FIND their own cottage to castle….please consider passing on my name – I promise I will always make time for your referrals!
The Blank Canvas…a designer’s dream! Happy news! Last week I made you suffer, looking at the messy, scary, horrible images of my poor cottage's dirty little secrets...but now I'm going to show you the BLANK CANVAS!
Beautiful Homes of Instagram Happiness has arrived! I honestly feel extra happy when I share a new “Beautiful Homes of Instagram” post with you. I find these posts are so helpful if you’re looking for inspiration because these talented homeowners are always full of incredible ideas and many DIY projects. Today, I am honored to feature Selena from @middlesisterdesign. She and her husband are a DIYers and I am sure your jaw will drop as much as mine did when you see all of the projects done in this house. I hope you guys have a great time and get some inspiration here to apply to your home! I am definitely sharing this post with my husband! “I am so honored to have our home featured on Home Bunch! When Luciane contacted to ask if she could feature it, I was quite shocked and beyond excited! To have our humble little home that we’ve poured our hearts and souls into displayed next to some of the most beautiful homes on Instagram is just such an incredibly exciting gesture. Thank you Luciane. And thank you all for visiting! Welcome to our home! A little intro to myself. I’ve had a passion for Interior Design and Décor for as long as I can remember. It was merely a “hobby” of mine for many years. Until 2 years ago I worked part time as a bank teller. One day my husband suggested that I pursue my dreams of having my own Interior Styling business. After a lot of deliberation, I decided to go for it and Middle Sister Design was born. I specialize, and take pride in being a more budget friendly, less complicated, savvy stylist for the homeowner who desires a well-dressed home without the large price tag. Simple, Smart and Savvy; that’s my motto! I began a Blog, have had much success with local clients and have loved every minute of it. (And have not once missed wearing heels to work, counting dirty money or trying to upsell. There’s still so much for me to learn and I have big plans for the future of my Blog and Business. When my husband and I decided to build our home nearly 10 years ago we had just been married less than a year. We had viewed many homes in the area’s “cookie-cutter” neighborhoods and while we were uncertain of exactly what we wanted, we knew these were not it. We decided to scour the internet for land as well as for house plans. My husband found a 2 ½ acre piece of land that was only 5 minutes from my childhood home and I found the house plans (we disagreed on LOTS of them before finding the “perfect” one.). We both liked the bones of the house plan I’d found, however there were many things we didn’t love and so we sought help from a local Architect and custom home building company. With their assistance, we made changes to much of the main floor plan. I would describe my design style as somewhat eclectic. Growing up in the South and in a more traditional style home, you will find a bit of it throughout my own. However, being a lover of trends, I do enjoy bringing pieces of trendy items into the mix. Neutral, natural, earth inspired elements are my favorite. My Grandparents lived on a farm and from my memories of spending the summers there stem an adoration for that lovely, cozy farmhouse feel. My take on modern farmhouse industrial and boho chic also play a part in this eclectic style of mine. I truly do have an appreciation for all the styles.” Beautiful Homes of Instagram We kept to the original plans for the exterior of the home aside from choosing much larger windows shown above as well as the Stacked Stone veneers from Eldorado Stone in the color Alderwood. We loved that stone so munch in fact that we decided to carry it over to the entire foundation all around the entire house. The siding is Vinyl in the color ivory and all gutter work and trim are vinyl as well in white. We have designed and installed all of the landscaping ourselves and while that is a job in itself, the toughest part is keeping the multitude of deer from eating all of our hard work. Porch Front Porch stain is James T Davis solid stain in the color Tree Bark. The swing is from Hayneedle and the wicker conversation chairs are from Pier 1. Rugs are from Target. Front Door Front door color is basic black exterior paint. Welcome Home! The front door opens to the Great Room which was actually 3 rooms on the original floor plan; Living Room, Kitchen and Dining Room. This, even on blue prints, looked incredibly cramped and we all agreed that an open concept would be a more unique and inviting look for this space. Another favorite unique feature of mine is the little “shelf” above the foyer’s close/master bedroom door. I chose to display the driftwood pieces my sister has collected from a nearby river for me over the years, knowing my love for it. Living room Sectional Sofa and chair in this space are the Ikea Ektorp Slipcover Series, both in Bleking White. DIY DIY Inspo: Bookshelves, side tables and coffee table were all built by my husband. Rug is Bleached Jute from Overstock. Fireplace We decided to take the fireplace all the way to the top of the high ceilings using the same stone used on the exterior – Stacked Stone veneers from Eldorado Stone in the color Alderwood. Paint Color Paint color for the entire main floor is Benjamin Moore HC-173 Edgecomb Gray. DIY Shiplap Kitchen The shiplap wall was added by us last year. We used 4×8 wood floor underlayment from Home Depot, cut into 6” strips and installed using liquid nails and a small brad nail gun, using nickels as spacers. It was such an easy project that creates such dramatic results. And best of all, incredibly inexpensive. Paint color is White. This open concept would require reconfiguring the entire kitchen layout which was tricky but in the end, we chose a unique island style and designed using Kraftmaid cabinets all the way to the ceiling to utilize every inch of this small space for storage as possible. Cabinets are solid maple in the color Biscotti. Dining room The table is a found item made from 100 year old barnwood. It was in bad shape when I found it but I put a little love into it and she’s as good as new. The bench at table, sideboard and industrial shelves were built by my husband. The two captain’s chairs are from Ikea. Rug is the bleached jute from World Market. Grasscloth shades are from JC-Penney. Doors The French Doors in the Dining Room were not a part of the original plan. In fact, there was only one small window here as well as in the kitchen area. The French Doors open to a large deck, also not part of the original plans. Landing Upstairs are two bedrooms and a full bath. The landing at the top of the stairs houses a chair that is a family heirloom. Another favorite space of mine. All flooring throughout the home is oak with the exception of two upstairs bedrooms. Neutral Bedroom Paint Color Our daughter is grown and no longer lives with us. When converting her bedroom into an office for myself, I wanted to keep a bit of “youth” to this room but also wanted it to be a place for guests of all ages to feel comfortable. I chose fun, on trend patterns and lots of textures for this space. The chair rail was installed when the home was built. Last year I installed the faux board and batten using 1 ½ inch lattice strips. Paint color on walls is Khaki by Valspar. Board and batten and all trim and doors are basic white paint. Simple. Bedding is from Pottery Barn and all furniture is the Ikea Hemnes series. Guest Bedroom The second bedroom has always been a guest bedroom but it too got the board and batten treatment last year. Wall paint color is also Khaki by Valspar. Bed & Bedding The bed is an antique, Amish made, chalk painted with Valspar chalk paint in the color Kid Gloves. French Provincial nightstand and dresser were mine as a child, painted the same as bed. Bedding is from various stores. I like to pay extra attention to detail as well as cost into the bedding of the guest beds. Linen, high quality cotton and extra down comforters are a great way to give that 4 & 5 star hotel feel. Master Bedroom The Master Bedroom layout is original to the plans. Of course, as mentioned before, with the exception of making those windows much larger. This is one of my personal favorite changes that we made. Paint Color Wall paint color is Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray HC-173. Shiplap Bed The shiplap bed, nightstands, bench and large mirror were built by my husband. The jute rug is from World Market. Bedroom Chair This slipcovered chair brings a relaxed feel to this farmhouse bedroom. Lamps are from Target. Antique Door Hung with barn door hardware, this salvage door adds so much character to the master bedroom. Master Bathroom When built our home we’d installed a jetted garden tub. Four years ago though, we decided to rip it out and replace with this Clawfoot Slipper Tub from Vintagetub.com. This is the Randolph Morris 67 Inch Cast Iron Slipper Tub. I cannot express how much I adore this tub. Also in this space, we designed a much larger window here than the original floor plans. One of my favorite pastimes during the snowy season is soaking here while watching the snow fall. Laundry room We reconfigured what was intended to be a mud room/powder room off of the kitchen area into a small powder room and laundry room. There were two reasons for this. One, taking square feet from this space allowed us to add them to the Master Bedroom’s Closet opposite the wall of this space. Two, making this space smaller meant there would be no place for an exterior entry door to enter the mudroom which worked well by adding a larger deck and doors in a different area, which I will describe below. We had decided earlier in the planning that a mud room was not necessary for us. The home has a full basement with garage. This is perfect for bringing in messes from long days of gardening or yard work. The industrial shelving were built by my husband. Powder room Here is the powder room. I decided to separate the powder room and laundry room with a pocket door which easily hides any laundry messes from potential unexpected guests- or when I simply want to “hide” it from myself! :). Towel ladder was built by my husband. Backyard Our backyard is currently getting a small makeover but I thought I’d share a photo of our firepit from last summer. I hope you enjoyed the home tour.
