Now that the final SoKP episodes have passed thru my eyes... Things I miss from the novel:
* Sorry but Jiang Xuening should have killed You Fangyin's murderer with her own hands.
* Jiang Xuening becoming obsessed with Xie Wei's cooking, such that she loves to quietly hang out in the kitchen with him whenever there's a break in the scheming. It's their safe space.
* Jiang Xuening going from being in the palace and part of the target/victims of the rebellion in Life 1 to being one of the financial backers of it in Life 2 and accompanying their fighting forces as they move up through the country as Xie Wei outsmarts the emperor & Xue family & Lord Pingnan's forces at the same time. Spending her 2 years away building the capital needed to help spearhead the rescue of the princess and then go to fuck up the emperor who sent his sister a letter to end her life for the benefit of the country.... (chef's kiss)
* The glorious revolution and making the royal family kill each other to save themselves in order to demonstrate the type of people they are
* Jiang Xuening moving into Kunning Palace at the end, as basically the unofficial minister of finance. She ended up in the same place at the end, but hearts & minds are changed and so the result is different
* Jiang Xuening putting the pieces together that the princess died in the 1st life due to her pregnancy & the emperor cutting ties (intrigue!) Team Fuck The System helping her safely give birth to her son, who she loves despite his origin. Our fav lesbian never has to get married to another dude and can just chill with her son, the cabinet of ministers, and her Ning Ning (with psycho husband in tow, but hey nobody's perfect 😂). Using her power to spread schools for women's literacy with Xie Wei terrifying the detractors into submission.
* When they try to use the Jiang family in the capital to threaten XW and he's like, so what? I was gonna pay back those bastards next for Ning'er so you're saving me time lmaaaaaaoooo
* Speaking of which tbh I prefer the lack of a last ditch bandaid on the Jiang family relationship. She's let all of the pain of the past go and isn't personally seeking to take anything away from them in this life... but she is just done with it. Dad is nicer but he's let his wife behave like this and has been mostly hands off. Feels sorta like Story of Minglan to me - letting the favoritism & emotional abuse happen while playing nice guy. In both novel & drama, he spends years not protesting how Jiang Xuening is cast as the troublesome, uncouth, inferior model. But then the drama decides to rehabilitate them. (Though to be fair, even the drama was half-hearted on this 'wash', cause at the end she's mentioning they're not close and in the last scenes the parents are with the sister and Ning'er is with her found family.)
Improvements in the drama:
* I liked that we got to see Jiang Xuening tell multiple people that she loves XW before she gives him her answer. The angst of it being uncertain what conversations she's having with the princess & ZZ, the risk that she's going to abandon XW for being a hot mess... it made for good dramatic tension in the novel. But for the ROMANCE and creating a sense that the feelings he has are truly returned... It makes the ship better.
* The relationship that FL and ML had with the fake Xue Dingfei was richer. He was a standout for me.
* Yan Lin had a happier ending. He really stole my heart in this 2nd life and like Jiang Xuening I felt no need to see him haunted by his vile actions in another universe. It was emotionally satisfying in the drama to see him at peace. You got us all rooting for him.
* Consolidated the Lord Pingnan plot! We really didn't need to get into their factions and introduce more antagonists.
* Consolidated the You Fangyin romantic interests - no need for a marriage of convenience with 1 dude and then Xie Wei's buddy also carrying a torch.
* I felt like the drama gave Zhang Zhe more personality and I did find it delightful when he was "fighting" side by side with Xie Wei.
* Xue Shu (the Xue daughter) felt like a more developed, fully realized antagonist.
* As much as it "sings" in the narrative to have her end up in Kunning Palace with power in the government at the end of the novel (that was brilliant)... maybe emotionally it spoke to me more to see her initial wish from the start of her rebirth fulfilled. Her original reborn goal was to avoid reentering the palace & exit-out of everything to have a quiet life of peace. None of that power ever made her happy.
* Marriage scenes of the otp thank uuuuuuuuu
* No and actually.. After her royal marriage in the 1st life she definitely doesn't need another big celebration. And with her messed up family relationships and his dead parents... Them doing the marriage ceremony all on their own, cause it's another pact between them, makes a lot of sense and I dig it.
* The reverse callback of whispering while she's waiting for a kiss to say "I'm yours" instead of "get out" 👌👌👌

I enjoy sensual quasi makeouts the same as any other person, but the thing that keeps me watching this drama is just how much I love both the protagonists. Despite the time slip element, what I am really focused on is how adult both of them are. They are young sure, but not childish. I am especially in love with the FL who is unflinchingly honest and does the right thing but is not stupid.
For a long time, she did not want to accept help from Lin Yi's character because she rightly didn't trust the intentions of a too-kind stranger. Once she found out she basically transmigrated into the body of his ex AND he proved he was sincerely kind, it made sense to her (though I love that she was wary at first because she didn't want him to see the discrepancy and for her to get into a psych ward or w/e.) And once she saw how much help he was willing to give her because of the ex thing, what does she do? Despite the trouble it could be - losing her job that he found her, psych ward, whatever, she decides to tell him the truth because he's owed that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She tells him the ENTIRE truth and sums it up perfectly and concisely:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It goes as well as expected but the whole point is she tried (and she KEEPS trying, she doesn't just drop it in relief. In part because he's the sole friend she has in this world and she wants him to be a friend to her not a memory of another person, but in another part because she is a fundamentally fair person.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But honestly, they are both such decent people. I love that while she borrows money from him, she always pays back and her insistence on treating him to a meal with her first paycheck is lovely. The thing is, I also love that HE is a decent person. It eats him alive that she refuses to recognize him or ask anything not because he thinks he's owed but because he wonders what kind of horrible trauma she went through to deny her past self. He clearly thinks she sold her body (he thinks about granny saying she got a bunch of money quickly and what kind of job could a beautiful young woman with little education get that paid a lot, and he sees her drinking like a pro and it confirms to him) and his reaction isn't ugh or anything but just guilt and concern...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love this so much!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oooof!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I love that her response is unflinching reiteration she's not the original JXY and it's just he doesn't believe her.
Re timeslip: my theory, she originally IS from this world and IS the girl from this world who somehow ended up as a tester for that weird device and it's the other rich heiress life in 2025 that was one that wasn't really hers - she got those weird flashes of memory looking at pictures of OG JXY's high school, OG JXY's granny mentioned that OG JXY suddenly made a ton of money needed for granny treatment and she couldn't figure out how since OG JXY didn't even have a college degree - if she were a tester for a weird system, she could get paid a lot, the guy who was her father's secretary in 2025 world mentioned something about her not belonging (and he's the missing friend ML has been searching for) and also it would be a bit odd for ML to fall for his ex's doppelganger in terms of narrative. And it IS odd that her bizarro dumpling sauce mix is exactly the same as OG JXY. But we shall see)

Wonderland of Love
Today the dash reminded me of one of the steamiest and hottest historical war cdramas that is pure fun, delicious flirting, and two main leads exploding into sparky fireworks of mutual attraction the minute they see each other. It's one of my favorite performances by Xu Kai (apart from Arsenal Military Academy which is still THE BEST one). The man is a very good actor and is perfect for the romantic genre, but this whole cdrama just let him have so much fun with this youthful, daring, and dashing character who is very capable and too smart for his own good (but doesn't want to get into the whole shitty palace power-play, and I get you boy, no one ever wants that stuff, just go play warrior with your boys and a pretty girl). He has quite a bit of character development and the plot is fast-paced with lots of cool fighting scenes. There is literally not a single boring thing about this drama!
For me, this was The Double of 2023 in terms of steamy-hot romance and amazing on-screen performances, although this drama does focus on romance much more. It's that rare case when the actors just click both on screen and in real life, looking like a perfect match in every regard. On-screen couples, they either have it or they don't, that X Factor or whatever you call it. Well, this couple was definitely one of the best ones in regards to love/relationship development, which was the opposite of a slow-burner, or at least, the plot was so action-packed that they got to see each other often and the ML would never miss an opportunity to woo his girl or sneak into her bedroom at night (hehe). Flirty and straightforward.
The girl (Cui Lin, played by the mesmerizing Jing Tian) was also amazing in this one - a powerful fighter, a brilliant strategist, the daughter of a famous general, and a cunning little fox who most of the time was a few steps ahead of the ML, but was rarely left behind. And unlike him, who stubbornly resisted being dragged into the royal shenanigans, she understood that it was quite unavoidable, plus - she wanted him to get all that power because he was one of the good guys, who could actually make a difference, make everything better somehow.
But being a good AND a smart guy, he didn't want to have anything to do with it unless he really really had to. The couple had quite a bit of drama around him taking the responsibility and becoming the Crown Prince (which also meant they both would be locked inside the palace they kind of hated if they did get married). It was twisted, it was fun to watch, and they did manage to work around that in the end (the finale was also incredibly satisfying, with no open endings and that kind of stuff).
There's also a slightly weird obsessive-possesive love scenario with the FL's not-actually-brother who goes off rails to have her no matter what, up to the point that he betrays his whole country (because, duh, she's smart AND pretty), to keep things fresh between the two leads so that they don't get too lovey-dovey with each other, heh))
I just wanted to mention this sweet historic cdrama here as well - it's perfect for everyone who loves good fighting scenes, smart characters, plotting, loads of flirting, good acting, pretty leads, and a fair amount of steaminess. 100% rewatchable. Do watch it if you haven't already!

Request: Part two to “If you love someone” (part one here) my day five hamwriters writeathon fic from Lin’s POV
Pairing: Lin-Manuel Miranda x reader, Daveed Diggs x reader
Warnings: angst, breakups, unrequited love (or is it)
Word count: 1,996
A/N: I started to write this because I felt bad about the angst in part one but... it didn’t turn out quite as I expected. You can blame @fragmentofmymind because part 7 of Work Comes Home made me want to write all the angst
--
Almost six months after you and Daveed started dating Lin decided he would leave Hamilton in July. He had had a tempting offer from Disney for Moana and he could feel the time was coming for him to move on. Lin knew he would miss the show- the theatre, the story, and the cast who had become his family- but he knew he couldn’t be Alexander Hamilton forever.
Lin was rewatching The Little Mermaid, sprawled on the couch with his laptop and a mug of his favourite coffee, when his phone rang. The sound of your singing let him know who the caller was. He picked up. “Hey Y/N,” he said as he reached for the remote to pause the movie.
“Can I come over?” you asked and, even over the phone, Lin could hear that you were holding back sobs. The rawness of your voice and the careful control you were just barely holding made you sound vulnerable, though Lin knew you were one of the strongest people he knew.
“Sure,” he said gently, “do you need anything?”
You sniffed. “Can you open the door?”
Lin got up, forgetting about his laptop. He winced as it hit the floor with a worrying thump but it seemed to be alright, so he set it back on the couch and hurried to get the door. You rang the doorbell as he fumbled for his keys- why had he left them at the bottom of his satchel again?
When he did open the door it was to find you standing nervously on the doormat, eyes red and clothes in disarray, clutching a tissue. “Hi,” you managed to say before you started to cry again.
Lin pulled you into his arms and inside, closing the door with his foot. You buried your face in his shoulder, muffling your sobs. Lin rubbed your back gently and held you, unsure if he should try and move you to the couch or just let you cry.
After a little while your tears seemed to subside and you straightened, wiping your eyes with your sleeve. “S-sorry,” you said, stepping back, “I didn’t mean to-”
“It’s fine,” Lin insisted, heading through into the living room, “what’s happened?”
You settled on the couch, still sniffling a little. You took a deep breath and Lin inched a little closer, just in case. “Daveed’s decided to leave Hamilton,” you started, voice thick with emotion, “in July.”
Lin made a sympathetic noise. He knew Daveed would leave sometime- he still had clippng. to worry about and he couldn’t be Lafayette and Jefferson forever. Right after me, he thought, but didn’t say that.
“He wants to go back to Oakland for a little while and-” you paused and Lin could see you blinking back the tears again, “and he doesn’t think long distance will work.”
“Long distance works sometimes,” Lin pointed out indignantly, “if you love each other.”
You snorted. “He said we could try again when he got back. He means it.” Lin took your hand, hoping that wasn’t overstepping his boundaries. You looked out over the city. The sun was starting to go down over the city and the soft light made everything feel more intimate somehow. “I couldn’t sit here and wait,” you said softly, “wondering if he’d found someone smarter, prettier- more talented.”
“There’s no such person,” Lin insisted firmly.
You laughed and squeezed his hand, “Thanks Lin.” You fell silent, lost in your thoughts, a faraway expression on your face.
“I was just watching The Little Mermaid before you arrived,” Lin admitted, “you want to watch it with me?” You looked like you were about to say no. “I’ll make popcorn?”
“Oh alright then,” you drew your legs up onto the couch and tugged a blanket over your knees. “Why not?”
He grinned, triumphant. “Don’t start without me,” he warned and dashed into the kitchen. Where was the microwaveable popcorn? He threw open the cupboards, realising he’d need to shop if his mother wasn’t to despair about how empty they were next time she came over. Lin grabbed the popcorn and headed over to the microwave.
“Thanks for letting me come over,” you called from the couch. You were on your phone, responding to a text. Probably Pippa, Lin thought as he popped the bag in, she’d be worried about you.
“No problem- glad I could be of service.” The popcorn bag inflated and the kernels started to pop. Lin had worried that, after his drunk confession back in March, he had wrecked your friendship. But, though you were both initially a little cautious around each other, you had quickly fallen back into your easy friendship.
The microwave dinged and Lin opened it, wincing when he smelled a bit of burnt popcorn. He quickly emptied the packed into a bowl and all but ran for the sofa, spilling popcorn into your lap as he sat down. “Okay go,” he said, and you pressed play.
“I’ve got popcorn down my shirt, Lin,” you complained in a grumpy whisper as the film started.
“Sorry,” he said sheepishly and offered you the bowl. He had missed having you over for movie nights- the rest of the cast made it over once every few weeks but you and Daveed had often had dates on those nights.
After a little while you yawned and rested your head on his shoulder. Lin could have sworn his heart skipped a beat as Eliza sang Helpless in his head. “Good friend,” you mumbled, closing your eyes.
Lin kept his eyes firmly on Ariel as she dreamed of the world above, Sebastian valiantly trying to persuade her. He knew that, if he looked at you sleeping peacefully on his shoulder, he would break. So he focused on Sebastian’s calypso beat watched the screen until he fell asleep too.
--
Lin woke up the next morning with a stiff neck and a weight on his chest. He opened his eyes, wincing at the bright light that streamed in through the windows.
You were still asleep, your head pillowed on his chest. Your hair was a mess, your mascara smeared from crying and sleeping with it on. The blanket was tangled round you awkwardly and one hand was still clutching Lin’s sweater.
He thought you looked beautiful. It all felt so domestic, and Lin had to stop himself wishing longingly that he could wake up like this every morning.
His phone buzzed and Lin realised that must have been what had woken him up. He extracted it from his pocket with some difficulty and unlocked it. Chris had texted him.
From: Chris (08:31)
Hey Lin, are we still having a FLS meeting today? - Chris
Lin swore silently and typed out a hasty reply with his free hand. He had promised to meet Chris and the guys at nine to talk about where they were going to go with Freestyle Love Supreme. He glanced at you, still sleeping.
As carefully as he could he slipped away, supporting you in his arms while he slid a cushion under your hand. Then he scribbled out a note for you explaining where’d he’d gone and telling you to help yourself to breakfast and left it on top of your phone.
--
Chris grinned when he saw Lin run down the street, still in his clothes from the day before, grey hoodie thrown on over the top in an attempt to look presentable.
“Hey,” Lin panted, “Sorry I’m late.”
“What happened?” Chris asked curiously as they headed inside. Utkarsh and Bill waved hello from where they were fiddling with a mic stand.
“Y/N and Diggs broke up,” Lin said quietly.
Chris frowned, “So you were late because they broke up?”
Lin shook his head, “Y/N came over-”
“You didn’t-” Chris left the sentence unfinished, but Lin knew what he meant.
He shook his head. “No! Of course not. We watched The Little Mermaid and Y/N fell asleep on my couch.” He hoped he had sounded relatively calm and indifferent but Chris gave him a pitying look that let him know he hadn’t succeeded.
“Still pining, huh?” Chris patted him on the shoulder. “I think you should move on, Lin. Nothing good will come of this.”
Lin nodded and turned to Utkarsh, who had moved on from the broken mic- not working as a hook for his plaid shirt- and was fiddling with his guitar instead. “So, what are we going to do?”
--
Lin opened the door to his apartment, half afraid he’d find you there, half afraid he wouldn’t. He dropped his keys on the kitchen counter and turned on his ancient coffee machine. It rumbled to life as he grabbed a mug from the side.
“Can I have some?”
He jumped to hear your voice, nearly dropping the mug. Lin turned to see you leaning against the counter, one of his hoodies on. “I thought you might have left,” Lin admitted.
“You locked the door,” you pointed out with a grin and picked up his keys. You examined the hamilton keychain and the battered souvenir New York one beside it.
“Shit, I’m so sorry-”
You smiled and reached for the mug of coffee that had just finished pouring. “It’s alright- if it had been anyone else I’d have been a bit creeped out.”
“Still stupid of me.” You must think he was an idiot to do something like that, Lin cursed himself and his forgetfulness.
“I was thinking,” you pulled yourself up to sit on the countertop, legs swinging. You sipped your coffee and let out a satisfied sigh, “that I might take a break from New York.”
Lin nearly dropped his mug again. “What?”
You looked excited now. “I’ve been talking with a producer in London- they’re auditioning for some changes in their Les Mis cast and they’d be interested in hearing me try for Cosette or Fantine.”
“That’d be amazing!” Lin grinned. He could imagine you there, bringing justice to another role. He paused, “Would you be leaving Hamilton then?”
You frowned thoughtfully. “Not right away,” you said slowly, “maybe in the fall.”
London. You could be so far away from him. How often would you see each other? Would you face-time through the time difference, waiting to meet up once or twice a year? “I’m leaving in July,” he blurted out.
“What?” you gasped, “Why?”
“Disney made me an offer,” Lin grinned, enthusiastic again at the thought of fulfilling a childhood dream, “they want me to help with the music for Moana.”
You jumped down from the counter, leaving your mug on the side. Throwing your arms around him, you pulled him into a hug. “That’s amazing, Lin,” you said.
Lin wrapped his arms around your wait and, unthinkingly, picked you up and swung you round. You shrieked in surprise, clutching his sweater tightly. He swore he could feel your heartbeat.
He set you down and you drew back a little, still smiling. “I’m so happy for you,” you said quietly and Lin was struck by how easy it would be to lean in and kiss you. You met his gaze, your eyes alight with excitement.
“I’m happy for you too,” he replied.
You stepped back, and laughed, breaking the moment. “I haven’t even auditioned yet,” you pointed. “I might not get the part.”
“You will,” Lin insisted. What had he been thinking? Considering kissing you a day after you broke up with Daveed and only a few months after you’d told him you weren’t interested.
Your phone buzzed and you reached to pick it up. You made a face. “I’ve got to go,” you said, looking around for your jacket. “Family stuff.”
Lin picked up his keys, “I’ll let you out.”
“Thanks,” you laughed. You paused at the door to put your jacket on. “Thanks Lin,” you said sincerely, “your support- it means a lot to me.”
“Anytime,” Lin grinned. You headed out, shouldering your bag as you headed down the stairs. “Anytime.”
