Venom
Venom is a 2018 superhero film directed by Ruben Fleischer. It stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed. The film is about Eddie Brock, a down-on-his-luck journalist who becomes possessed by an alien symbiote. Soon, more symbiotes begin to appear and it is up to Venom & Eddie to stop them.
A question that always always existed in every Marvel fans’ mind; Will Venom ever be done justice on the big screen? And if so, could he do it without Spider-Man? These questions were willing to be answered by Sony, the very company that ruined Venom and Spider-Man in the first place. However, Tom Hardy is a fantastic actor and things did look promising at the very start. Fast forward a few trailers, being frankly honest, not once did the film look like any good. So, does Venom prove the haters wrong and absolutely knock the ball out of the park with his own movie? Unfortunately, he doesn’t. Don’t get me wrong, Venom is one of my favorite comic book characters of all time, but this solo film is so mishandled and wasted. Venom is a mildly serviceable and forgettable action film that really should have been so much more. The script and plot is a mess and the characters awfully generic. Poor Tom Hardy carries this film with all the charisma, charm and craziness in his body, but unfortunately he’s trapped in a much bigger mess. Sony almost ruins Venom twice.
Let’s begin with the positives.
Mainly, Tom Hardy. He talks to himself for most of the film, and as his character morphs into Venom his acting only got crazier and more over-the-top. Fortunately, Tom Hardy is a fantastic actor and he’s a fantastic Venom. As he provides the voice for the anti-hero and plays Eddie Brock, Hardy is literally carrying this film on his back. The best part of the entire film is actually his dynamic back-and-fourths with Venom, who proves to be genuinely comedic.
However, the film does have some issues.
To begin with, script. Sony rushes out films and pays for it, there’s no denying that. This script really could have used refining, because it’s pretty much all over the place. Gaping plot holes aside, the dialogue isn’t strong either. The comedy misses around 70% of the time, and much of the serious dialogue is very forgettable. The first act can sometimes be a chore to get through, and the last act is as generic and predictable as you can get.
Also, characters. What makes every decent superhero film is it’s characters. Unfortunately, the ones in this film were painfully one dimensional. Jenny Slate and Michelle Williams are two highly talented actresses who are wasted in this film. The roles they are given seems as if it were from a movie from the 2000s. Riz Ahmed is also, regrettably, a generic and painfully cliched villain despite trying his best. A well-known and much better option, arrives too late at the end credits.
In addition, CGI. You do get some scenes of decent CGI, before you begin to suspect what happened to the budget for the rest of it. Venom’s mouth moves hilariously slow in various scenes, and you can almost see that Sony were trying to hide poor CGI in the film. It’s regrettably one of the cheaper-looking blockbusters of the year.
To conclude, despite some joys to be had thanks to Tom Hardy’s performance, and the dynamic between Eddie and Venom, it’s safe to say Venom simply isn’t up to par with what people come to expect these days from Marvel. I don’t blame them, as they quite literally had nothing to do with this. The script is an absolute mess, the characters disappointingly bland and the CGI very poor at points. You’d really expect more from a Venom film after waiting years for one, but yet again Sony fails to deliver. I am praying Tom Hardy’s Venom just jumps ship to the MCU at some point, as Sony no longer deserves fans’ trust. Venom receives an 6.2/10.
