like yes, essek's disguise was paper thin to anyone who knows him but also if you think back to cr2, he was a FANTASTIC liar. he did an extremely good job keeping tabs on m9 without being obvious & making THEM feel indebted to HIM, when he was the one who needed them more. and before he started to reciprocate their feelings of friendship, he very clearly clocked their fondness towards him (jester in particular) and was milking it for all it was worth.

like obviously he started to genuinely like them & that's when his lies fell apart like a house of cards.

which I think is exactly it: essek is extremely skilled at lying when he has no emotional investment in something. he was able to fool everyone bc it didn't mean anything to him. he didn't care abt the dynasty or the assembly or the thousands of people he got killed, he only cared abt himself & his interest in the beacons.

but the moment he starts to Feel Something, he completely fails to hide it. which makes sense bc until m9 he never had to do that before! he's fucking terrible at masking his emotions bc he had 0 practice.

so now with BH, having to confront the full consequences of his actions—he didn't just start a war, he's directly responsible for the potential destruction of the entire fucking planet—he's on a hair trigger whenever anyone brings up ludinus, or his friends are threatened.

In episode 91, Beau makes an insight check on Essek when he shows up at the Xhorhaus for dinner and says he came in part because it's been a while (🎵) since he had a social engagement. Marisha rolls a nice juicy Nat 20 and Matt delivers a moderately long whisper. It's not a huge mystery; we know that even a Nat 20 on insight has limits to the information it can provide (you're not suddenly clairvoyant or able to access context you didn't already have), and we can surmise especially with post-campaign comments from Matt that it was probably something alluding to Essek's loneliness and some veracity to his claim about it having "been a while" (🎵). But just for entertainment I really wish we could know specifically what the whisper was, because its effect was very funny. Observe:

right around 2:05:00 in c2e122, after Caleb shows the Nein 3 of the 'memory' rooms on the 8th floor of his tower

Veth jokes about 'definitely not' needing proof there's a memory of where she first met him

Beau comments on how gnarly rooms 5 and 6 likely are, to which Caleb responds "maybe another day"

and then Yasha, amidst a bit of group chatter, says "I can't wait to see what's behind the other doors one day"

that was precisely when i fell in love with her. she knows what it's like to have those doors. to hold onto painful memories that are probably holding you back because how dare you even think of moving on? but slowly starting to show those doors to people and eventually letting them peek inside.

not only is it acknowledging her comfort within the discomfort that those 'rooms' and their memories/traumas entail, but that she's looking forward to sharing more of those moments with him as well
