I would assume you're a big fan of AoS and Supergirl. But which character on each show is your fave and why?
You guessed right! :P Sorry for the delay, I wanted to find the time to answer this properly, this is just my stream of conscience though and doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface.
Great question! Ok, so my favs are definitely Daisy Johnson and Kara Zor-El Danvers, but I love pretty much all the characters on both shows. I recently did a post on Daisy’s birthday about my favorite scenes in season 1. A lot of those scenes are what started my love of her.
Both of these wonderful characters have been through so much of what the universe has to offer. They have suffered and suffered. Kara lost her whole world and Daisy never even found one to be part of. She got thrown from foster home to foster home, the protocol never allowing her to stay anywhere for even a year. Kara was an alien, hiding who she was, knowing that if she were revealed both her new family and herself would be in danger. Neither of them were ever accepted by the world, outcasts to their very souls.
They had a right to be angry, to rage, but you know what they did? They took those experiences and learned to love the world. They developed a sense of empathy beyond compare. Both of them love deeply, they love total strangers, they care about even their enemies. Do you realize how rare and precious that is?
Daisy found a way to understand Ward despite everything and she empathized with and tried to help Ruby. She became a Rising Tide hacktivist because it was her way of helping the underdog, helping the world become a better place. That was something, someway she was capable of influencing the world and she took it. When Coulson offered her a chance to make a bigger difference with SHIELD, she jumped on it. She learned what their purpose was and wholeheartedly worked to become a part of it. One of my favorite scenes in season 1 is when Daisy talks to Hannah. She has nothing in common with this lady. She doesn’t have the same beliefs, yet she forges a bond with her, finds a way to use her painful history to connect, and help comfort her.
Kara is unwilling to kill anyone, even the worst people imaginable.(inconsistency issues with the Martians and Non aside) She always, always tries to get through to the person before fighting them. She connects to them, tries to see the best in them. I will always love the scene in season 1 where she has no powers, but she still stops that robbery through her bravery and kindness. She sees each person in the city as a light, and whenever she helps someone, a little of that light becomes a part of her. She remembers the face of every single person she has saved; her super-heroism has absolutely nothing to do with pride, arrogance, or thinking that humans need saving, its just pure love.
Then there’s their overwhelming love for those clostest to them. They created their own families when they had no one to turn too, and they devoted themselves to them. Kara would do anything for any of the superfam. She gave up her powers entirely, for years to protect Alex. She gave up the one thing that she thought would make her feel more normal, and only changed that in order to save Alex. Daisy barely knew the team before she was willing to do anything for them, she gave up opportunities to fulfill her lifelong goal of finding her family. They both risk their life time and time again to protect them.
They are both so self-sacrificing and honestly self-depricating. Daisy gets told time and time again that death follows her. This idea haunts her so much. When HIVE happened, she wouldn’t allow herself to be comforted, the very idea of having hurt, and attempted to kill her family destroyed her, and she wouldn’t accept that it wasn’t her fault. She left the team, when she could have used the most help, because she wanted to protect them. She allows all the blame to fall on herself for so many things that are out of her control, and rarely places it on someone else. She was willing to sacrifice it all when she believed that she was the destroyer of worlds, to stay in a decimated future, to give up her powers she worked so hard to accept and control, to give up her life for everyone else. She doesn’t want to be the leader, even though she makes a brilliant one because sometimes she struggles to see and accept other peoples love and care for her. She denies the possibility of their trust because she doesn’t trust herself.
Kara suffers from survivers guilt. She feels the weight of millions of lives on her shoulders. She failed in her purpose of protecting and teaching Kal-El, and she feels that blame, even if not of that is her fault. She fell under the effects of Red-Kryptonite, and similar to Daisy, she hurt those she loved and tried to kill her sister. It didn’t matter that she wasn’t really the one to blame. She feels the blame for every injury or death around her. Kara puts so much pressure on herself to be perfect and feels like she’s weak if she isn’t. She couldn’t handle the idea of still suffering from her childhood trauma in “Triggers”, having claustrophobia was a sign that she had failed somewhere.
Their coping mechanisms are similar as well. Daisy hides behind humour, when she’s scared or unsure, she turns to sarcasm, to jokes. She holds her feelings in, bottles them up, and doesn’t allow others to really see how she’s truly feeling. This is both to protect herself and to protect the other person. She doesn’t want to become a burden, so she avoids her feelings and issues. Kara has an entire persona to hide behind. Kara Danvers is a happy, innocent girl. Kara hides behind that idea, even when she isn’t pretending to be a normal human, even when in the presence of family. She can laugh and smile even when she’s dying inside. She pushes the idea of weakness away, ultimately forcing herself into denial. Sometimes she is so good at pretending that everything is a-ok that she fools even those closest to her, sometimes they almost forget she’s an alien from a fallen world.
Not everything about them is so heavy. Daisy is always ready to be geeky with Fitzsimmons, watching Paranormal movies, or Doctor Who. She’s the biggest shipper of all the romances. She’s so amazingly clever, but I don’t think she always recognizes that, especially with the high school dropout thing always weighing on it. She may or may not be book smart, but she is definitely street smart, she picks apart and recognizes patterns really well. She has few possessions that she has kept through the years, but one thing that has always stayed with her is a hula girl. Daisy always falls for the broken guy, the one with issues that she can help, because she never stops being a hero, even in her romance. She lived in a van in an alley way for years, by choice. She loves Phil Coulson and Melinda May like parents, but she still loved her parents despite their many issues and flaws and wanted what was best for them. She has learned to accept her differences, because sometimes being different can mean making a difference.
Kara is an artist, she probably uses it in a therapeutic way and to capture her memories to preserve them, since she has no photographs. She adores food, and gorges herself on pizza and pot-stickers. Chocolate Pecan Pie is apparently the best in the galaxy according to her. N'sync is her favorite band and she uses phrases like golly gee adorably. She’s good a Settlers of Catan and connects with kids really well. She initiates game nights and gets really competitive. She’s a genius on Kryptonian levels who learned calculus at age four, but had to leave it behind when she came to earth. She doesn’t understand or like Earth history. She’s horrible at spelling in English, but writes for a living. She’s not genuinely clumsy and will never feel normal, except when she’s with her sister, because the Danvers sisters? They should come with a warning.

The Expanse - Naomi on the sidelines
I’m hoping that anyone and everyone is watching this awesome show. Maybe it’s because I love me a good scifi show (cue Battlestar Gallactica and Star Trek theme songs...). My only issue with the show is that I can’t watch this in one go like my other faves on Netflix.
I’m sure everyone that loves the show have probably gone back and rewatched the episodes before season 3 started (amirite? Or is it only me?). This second time around gave me a lot to chew on when thinking about how the crew - mainly Holden - is treating Naomi.
Now, I haven’t read the books and am actually planning to, so I don't know what’s to come in the series (if they stick mainly to the book plot) apart from they supposedly are still together 6 books in? But for right now, Naomi is getting a rough handling by her family.
Yes, yes... we all know that she gave a sample of the protomolecule to Fred Johnson. Was she right? I’m not sure if she should have given it to him (better him than Dawes?) but we do know that he was manipulated in to killing those people on the Anderson Station and we saw that he had guilt and regret over it, so he may not be the biggest worst monster out there? Will he do the right thing with the protomolecule or will he really live up to his reputation as the Butcher of Anderson Station?
Anyways, back to Naomi... so one of the last sweet scenes we see between her and Holden is where he promised her “he’d love her through it all” but when she confesses what she’s done - he, along with one of the other most important persons in her life - Amos, turn on her vehemently. In the last episode, we see Holden basically telling her to leave. That certainly isn’t loving someone through it all.
What grinds my gears is that Holden, in his well placed mistrust of Fred Johnson, could not or would not see Naomi’s point of view or at least understand that her fears for the Belt and the Belters is warranted. Neither he nor Amos (who are both Earthers) nor Alex who is a Martian seemed to even bother to see the Belters as worthy as needing protection - preferring to lean towards a more wholistic approach to dealing with the war. All this even though Mars has a big hand in the events that have unfolded - even going as far as unleashing a hybrid on their own Martian Marines.
And another thing - yes, Fred Johnson using the protomolecule as a weapon against Earth and Mars would lead to more death something that everyone on the ship now including Chrisjen are furious about - but were they equally furious at the possibility of even more Belters being killed with it by Earth and Mars’ hands? Weren’t the Belters experimented on first?
Right, so having said all of that, and understanding that Holden does feel betrayed by Naomi for misleading him all this time AND bearing in mind that the sample that was supposed to be hurtled in to the sun was thought to be the last bit of it at the time (but subsequently finding out that it was indeed was NOT), can we truly say she has done the worst of the worst among this group of deeply flawed individuals? I say not. Case in point - some of the things these guys have done:
Holden - responds to the distress beacon against orders which in turn gets the whole thing rolling ever so much faster. He got everyone left on the Cant killed and Naomi covered for him until he was ready to reveal it to Amos, Alex and the guy who died fairly early on (forget his name!). I do wonder though, would Holden have covered for Naomi when Chrisjen was ripping in to them for allowing Fred Johnson to get his hands on the sample? At least Naomi gets a few reasons out for her actions without anyone shutting her up... again.
Miller - when presented with the opportunity to learn from one of the crazy scientists who was responsible for the protomolecule experiments, what does he do? He shoots him clean in the head - no real compelling reason apart from he was one of the dudes who killed Julie - a woman he’d never met while she was alive. The doctor could have helped - he made sure that didn’t happen. And wasn’t he considered to be a traitor to the Belters? Did Naomi care about that?
Prax - when presented with a room full of unarmed doctors who might have been able to lead them to his daughter and the location of more of the protomolecule, what does he do? He opens fire on them leading to yet another sh*t show. Uh, how do dead doctors help you find your daughter Prax? Yeah, thought so.
Amos - he doesn’t really do anything that I can remember that sets them back significantly but he’s guilty of not trying to see Naomi’s side and easily ignores and dismisses her. He who seems to be barely holding on to his sanity most episodes and he does this knowing Naomi’s got his back. No loyalty.
Alex - he also hasn’t done anything with regards to the mission that sets them back, but he is a lousy father and husband and has failed them on a deep level but Naomi doesn’t seem to judge him for it (luckily, he redeems himself by being anxious when he sees her looking at the path to Tycho while on the Razor Back and then reaching out to her through food - yay Alex!)
So these guys really aren’t blameless. Even Chrisjen is a manipulative person and sometimes you can hardly tell what her real agenda is - she has so many subplots going she’s always ten steps ahead. But Naomi sees clean through her though.
Bobbie is a defector - yes, she did what she did for what she thought were the right reasons. I didn’t get the impression she was going to be killed back on Mars, rather stripped from her rank as a Marine. Her people consider her a traitor but she’s being cheered for doing the right thing.
I’m going to close this dissertation by saying, I know that for the sake of the story and plot and in order not to turn the whole thing in to a space soap opera, there needs to be this conflict and some time taken to resolve it in order for it to stay true to what kind of show it primarily is. Doesn’t mean that it doesn’t suck though. Maybe we’ll see some steps closer to resolution in the next episode.

Empress of Mars
I knew I wouldn’t be able to watch last night’s episode, so I was ok with not catching up by then. Still managed to get spoiled...
Hey Brits... if American Doctor Who fans follow you... can you tag your stuff as “Doctor Who spoilers” for at least the first... 12 hours after airing? Because I got spoiled like 5 minutes after the most recent episode aired in England yesterday.
Doctor what are you doing? “Authorizing us to go anywhere we please.” WHICH IDIOT GAVE THE DOCTOR THAT? Or was it psychic paper and I’m just not paying attention. Rewinded. It looks like psychic paper, but we didn’t get a good enough look. The psychic paper isn’t as funny unless we can tell it’s the psychic paper. GOD SAVE THE QUEEN. WHAT THE HELL IS RIGHT. I mean yeah god save the Queen because Elizabeth II is the great but like... on Mars... I know the English colonized a lot of places but they definitely didn’t get to Mars. WOW NOT EVEN QUEEN ELIZABETH, QUEEN VICTORIA. “You’d like that one too! Everybody dies.” OH Bill. TARDIS. WHAT ARE YOU DOING. YOU NEVER LEAVE WITHOUT THE DOCTOR!? WHY?!?!?! ARE YOU SCARED OR SOMETHING?! BUT EVEN THEN YOU WOULDN’T LEAVE WITHOUT THE DOCTOR. But we haven’t had an episode where the Doctor is stranded without the TARDIS in a while so I’m ok with this considering some of my fave episodes are TARDIS-less ones (42, Impossible Planet/Satan Pit). Oh cool, we got old school Ice Warrior Martians. I say! I wasn’t expecting A VICTORIAN ERA DUDE ON MARS.
ARE YOU TELLING ME THAT ENGLAND COLONIZED MARS TOO!? I WAS JOKING EARLIER ABOUT COLONIZING MARS. BAD ENOUGH THE EMPIRE FELT ENTITLED TO OUR ENTIRE PLANET, YOU HAD TO GO TO ANOTHER ONE?!
Doctor. Your first thought should have been “Why is there a Victorian guy with a gun on Mars” instead of “Don’t let the Victorian guy shoot the Martian.” I mean yeah, that’s something important to think of, but that’s more of the immediate second thought after “why is he here?” Robinson Crusoe! I just finished taking a musical theatre intensive, one guy in my class had to sing a song called “Blue Room” and it became a running joke in our program. And Robinson Crusoe is mentioned in the song and I’ll always only think of this song now. Ok I guess that’s the only good thing so far, that they found nothing on Mars worth conquering it for. Oh. Plus you enslaved Friday. Come on. Oh poor baby Friday no please not the last of his kind! Ok but the Doctor’s “Is he now?” concerns me because it could either be the Doctor’s usual “Another last of their kind? I must adopt them” thing or it could be “I know there should be more Martians in the future so what’s happening right now?...” I bet you anything that the Gargantua is something that makes the ship go and that’s why they can’t leave. Oh the British colonial mindset. “They want to help us exploit their lands! ” What was that mindset called where they felt like they were the parent to the people they colonized? Or whatever it was they felt? I forget. IT WAS THE WHITE MAN’S BURDEN. This is literally the mindset of the White Man’s Burden. “Mars is part of the Empire now.” OH god. Oh my god we’re only 20 minutes in. So Jackdaw. You’re not only gonna disobey orders, you’re gonna steal treasures from Mars, and then leave everyone behind on Mars while you go back to Earth. Wow. Can’t get more selfish than that.
A COMMERCIAL FOR THAT MOVIE “LIFE” ABOUT LIFE ON MARS IS SO FITTING. GOOD MARKETING. CONGRATS “LIFE.” GIVE WHOEVER SAID “HEY, LET’S MAKE SURE THIS IS AIRED WITH A DOCTOR WHO EPISODE ABOUT MARTIANS ON DEMAND” A RAISE BECAUSE THEY DESERVE IT.
Aaaand this is why colonialism is bad. Ok he got compressed into a ball or something by that beam what the hell. “You think you can just go about slaughtering my men?” You think you can just go about trying to find treasures on a new land and take it over for your Empire? “What does the pink thing say” THAT’S A STAR TREK REFERENCE RIGHT?! Those tears, Capaldi. Yes. I’m gonna miss Capaldi so much. “I ask mercy for these primitives.” “Primitives!?” Not so nice when you’re the one being called primitive, huh? “We are both surrounded by noisy males.” YES GIRL. Do these idiots really not run unless their colonel says to? These guys are just standing in fear while the Doctor’s like “GET THESE MEN OUT OF HERE.” AND THEY DON’T EVEN RUN WHEN THE IDIOT WHO SHOT THE GUN GETS TURNED INTO A BALL. NOT UNTIL THE COLONEL SAID RETREAT. I GET THAT IT’S IMPORTANT TO FOLLOW ORDERS, BUT YOU CAN’T FOLLOW ORDERS DEAD.
I just wanna say I am LOVING this episode so far. Criticizing British colonialism? Yes please.
“That will hold them!” Will it though? Too bad this is Victorian times and the Doctor is both a knight and banished. Not a good time for him. “There’s no setting for wood, why is there still no setting for wood?” Why is there wood on Mars? Did they bring wood with the only purpose to make a door? Is he laughing because she’s a black police officer or because she’s a woman police officer or both... Ok... just because she’s a woman. At least he’s not racist. “I’m gonna excuse your Victorian attitude because... Well... because you’re actually Victorian.” I mean yeah. Oh great. Martians coming out of the ground. If Vincey dies I’m gonna kill someone. HEY. I DON’T SAY THIS OFTEN. BUT FUCK YOU DUDE WHO JUST PUSHED VINCEY IN FRONT OF YOU SO HE’D DIE INSTEAD OF YOU. I THINK IT WAS THE CAPTAIN. CATCHLOVE OR WHATEVER YOUR NAME WAS. I WASN’T PAYING ATTENTION BECAUSE LITERALLY IN THE HATS AND UNIFORMS AND FACIAL HAIR YOU ALMOST ALL LOOK THE SAME. BUT WHOEVER YOU ARE YOU SUCK. Aaaannnd my Internet sucks so it’s buffering right when Bill and the Queen are gonna have a talk woman to woman. Come on. I bet half the warriors are dead. “Like... like ‘Frozen.’” OF ALL THE MOVIES OF THE LAST COUPLE DECADES, THAT’S THE ONE YOU KNOW?!?!??!! And now the Captain’s trying to leave without everyone else. Great. YES COLONEL.
OK but now I’m like “I feel like British soldiers going to Mars would be in the history books” but then I remembered that this is Queen Victoria. She probably had Torchwood deal with it and keep it all a secret. I’m pretty sure this is after she formed Torchwood, but I’ll have to double check. But I think the werewolf thing was the 1870s so.
“Aways been my problem.” “What” “Thinking like a warrior.” Awwwww Doctor no. Alpha Centauri? Why is that ringing a bell? I should have written in this post earlier “I bet this is all full circle, they have to build the God Save the Queen thing to bring them there in order to build it so it brings them there.” because I had been thinking at some point in the midpoint, because I felt like not even the colonizers would write something like that in rocks on the surface, so it probably was the Doctor. But I didn’t put it in, and I should of. About time you got back here Narodole and Missy. I mean yeah that’s a good question, Doctor, are you alright?
I LOVED that episode. Oh my god. I loved it. I love this season so far so much. Oh my god. It’s great.

When they’re few and far between, inspired. 68: What's winter like where you live? So far, very mild. Lots of rain. We normally have a few big snowstorms though. 69: What are your favorite board games? Apples to Apples, Phase 10, and Uno. 70: Have you ever used a ouija board? Nope. 71: What's your favorite kind of tea? Lady Grey or Earl Grey. 72: Are you a person who needs to note everything down or else you'll forget it? Yes, absolutely. 73: What are some of your worst habits? I crack my knuckles. It drives my boss crazy. 74: Describe a good friend of yours without using their name or gendered pronouns. They are super caring, in tune with God, would give anything for those they’re close to. I admire them and their family so much for their resilience and strength. 75: Tell us about your pets! I have a cat. Her name is Bagheera - she is a black and brown striped tabby. And she’s a big meanie. Unfortunately /: Nice to me, not to other people. 76: Is there anything you should be doing right now but aren't? I should be taking a shower. 77: Pink or yellow lemonade? Classic yellow :) 78: Are you in the minion hateclub or fanclub? I like them. I’m not really passionate about loving or hating them. 79: What's one of the cutest things someone has ever done for you? The water of Magen’s Bay in St. Thomas. 82: Are/were you good in school? I was alright, more on the “good” side, I guess. 83: What's some of your favorite album art? The Chainsmokers’ singles lately have been on. point. 84: Are you planning on getting tattoos? Which ones? I can never commit to any, so I doubt I’ll ever get one. 85: Do you read comics? Why? Definitely 5 years into the past because I would have done things so much differently as a teacher. I would have been more open to ALL of my students and taken advantage of the time I had to get to know as many of them as possible instead of just a small few. The future should be unknown - I’m excited about that.
