Me when they canceled life by you:

I just KNEW there was something fishy. I was happy for the delays cause the game just looked undercooked and so the cancellation…was a surprise, I’m not gonna lie lol. But once the initial shock wore off, I just shook my head. It’s giving they didn’t want to suffer through another launch like Cities Skylines 2.

I’ve said from the beginning that Life By You did not look good. It did not have any practical features that I could see that would make gameplay enjoyable. No family play, empty world, and whenever a “human” went to work at apparently the only place hiring in town, the grocery store, it was like 2 other “humans” there. I mean those gameplay videos they were doing just got hard to watch. The game just seemed like it would be dead on arrival. And then on top of all that, a company like Paradox is releasing early access. Red flags all around. I wrote a dissertation I’m sure no one read, but there were too many things that I could see Paralives doing right that Life By You was doing wrong. Something as simple as being creative enough to come up with a name for these digital people. We have Zoi’s, we have Paras, we have Sims, and Life by You had…humans? How lazy is that? I get that it’s a life simulation game but there should still be some form of lore. Something that the world is grounded in. Something unique and immediately recognizable that makes the game stand out. And Life by You never had that. Their whole gimmick was “mod the game” how you like. But like I said before it was more about being able to deeply customize your game, not mod it. At least from what we were seeing. They made such a big deal about custom dialogue, story creator, color wheels, tailoring your characters personality to the most minute detail, etc. But they forgot to develop the rest of the game. At least that’s what it sounds like to me.

Devs are saying they were blindsided, which they probably were. I don’t think the game should have been canceled out right, but I think paradox’s impatience (since apparently it would “take too long” for the game to be done) probably stems from their desperate need for a win. And they knew Life by You wasn’t going to give them that. They did a great job of hyping up the community, enlisting every popular sim tuber they could, and I’m sure they would have made some sales. But I’m also sure the backlash for the state of the game would have been bigger. I mean seriously, look at older videos of Paralives and where they are now. And then look at Life by You.

Still sad that they shut down the whole studio and all those hard working folks lost their jobs. That part sucks. They should at least have been given the chance to make the game better. Smh.

I hope we’re able to see the other two projects to completion. Cause at the end of the day, the goal is to make sure EA no longer has a monopoly on this genre. The goal is NOT paying over $1200 in DLC for a $40, oh excuse me, now free to play game. Also can we stop charging for a game only to offer it for free later? Cause they sure ain’t giving refunds when that shit happens. 😭😤

Anyway, I’m rooting for everyone who’s not EA to be successful in their endeavors.

My internet is half cut off, which means it’s just super duper slow. We’ll probably be able to pay it next week but now I gotta walk to BK and use their Wi-Fi to download a little entertainment to get me through the week lol.

My car is messing up, there’s something wrong with the antifreeze or something, and we literally just paid rent and car insurance so I have just enough to pay the $50 to get my car looked at so we can see exactly what’s wrong (not that we have any money to fix it but we have to at least see if it’s still safe to drive bc it is our only means of transportation). Unfortunately doing this means I had to skip paying my internet bill. I’ve also been skipping grocery shopping since May 😅 We’re okay, food wise, living off ramen and rice for a few weeks is nothing to us. When we first moved here we literally would go 3-5 days just eating 1 pack of noodles. I do not recommend at all, but just some context on the “I’ve had it much worse” attitude lol. 

My PayPal is also currently negative $109 because someone requested a refund from my shop since I didn’t get their package out in time. All my fault, it was the week that my window got smashed in and my bathroom ceiling started leaking again. I’m 1000% to blame for the lack of time management on my part. Still sucks and I have until the 16th to handle it or… idk what will happen actually. PayPal just emailed me and said I had until the 16th to put the money in my account.

It’s like all the bad shit is happening all at once. My window, the ceiling is leaking… again, my car isn’t working, all my bills are due, my accounts are in negatives, no groceries, and now my internet is getting cut off (and I don’t have a phone anymore) — it’s my only connection to the outside world.

And on top of all this we are basically being forced out of our apartment bc our PM refuses to do her job.

I know that at some point things have to turn around but it’s been 4 years of this… when is the pendulum gonna swing the other way?? Or at least balance itself out? 😭🥲

No pressure, we are all struggling right now and I honestly am not expecting any help at all lol. My boyfriend’s step dad literally dropped him back off at our car the other day, where it originally broke down at, and then drove off… 😳😳😳 like, didn’t even wait to see if it would start. This is wonderful, you guys, thank you so much. At this point, IF we get the insurance refund for yesterday’s appointment by the end of the week, we’ll have the full cost of Monday’s appointment covered.

(Again, for the record — the total available funds are less than the amount raised because we withdrew 230 CAD for yesterday’s appointment. The 611 available right now is less than the total amount of 740 that we’ll need on Monday.)

I’m not sure how likely it is that we’ll get the refund in that time. I’m gonna do some calling around today and see. We may still need to come up with an additional 130 CAD.

Most of this we will hopefully get back from our insurance provider. However, their annual contributions max out at 750 CAD, meaning that past that point, we’re basically paying for everything with no reimbursement, and beyond the three fillings I’m getting on Monday there’s an extraction and more fillings to do. I’m hoping we’ll be able to manage it with minimal-to-none begging on the internet beyond this, and your generosity has been really just more than I ever could have hoped for, but I am gonna keep the pool open till the deadline because any additional funds will literally only help. Thank you all so, so much.

Okay, here goes. I’m sorry for the clumsiness of this – when we set up the PayPal pool initially, we had consulted with the previous dentist, but since then I’ve found a different dentist who is able to do sedation, which I need for dental work due to PTSD symptoms, blah blah. 

The good news is, I had a cleaning today and it went really well. I also only need one extraction (a wisdom tooth that is decayed and crowding my upper left molars). The bad news is I need more fillings than anticipated. My next appointment is set for Monday, February 25th, to get the three most urgent fillings done. The up-front cost for this (three fillings in upper-right molars, with conscious sedation) will be 740 dollars.

Of the 588 dollars initially donated, we withdrew 230 to pay for today’s appointment (including transport there and back), leaving 358 in the pool (The counter lists the total amount donated, not the current amount in the pool; I’m not sure how to adjust this without making an entirely new pool, which I’d rather not do at this point). I have adjusted the amount down to 740, the amount for Monday’s appointment, and set an end date of the 24th. We’re hoping to get a chunk of the money spent on today’s appointment back from our insurance, and possibly some help from family, but that still leaves us with cash to raise on pretty short notice. If we can raise 200 dollars by Saturday, we should be good to go for Monday. I will update this post to more accurately reflect progress over the next few days.

I REALLY apologize about the weird discrepancy with the pool counter and the amount needed; we made the pool initially thinking I’d be doing all my needed dental work in one appointment so all the funds would be withdrawn at once, which turned out not to be the case. After the appointment on Monday I’ll have a few weeks before the next one; we’re going to see what we get back from insurance and put that back towards future dental work, grind on freelance projects, and hopefully not have to internet panhandle for this again, at least for a while.
