Review and compare of my arts
Little BG of my anime drawing history :
I started drawing anime when I was Junior 3 (Grade 9). That was after Assassination Classroom finished airing. It’s not my first anime I feel in love to watch, but it is the one to push me to learn how to draw anime. Also the origin of my name I.T.N (Itona). I’m not a long term fan, but I am very passionate if I do say so myself lol when I’m in it and I would keep drawing non-stop. With that being say, these are the one I drew in the first/ second year FanArt, except the last one where I drew on last week.
.
.
1) The Super Angles Boy 🔻🔻
Yep, you’re right. I named the title as Angle not Angel👼 . It’s pretty clear that very lines in here are too straight, no nature curves. This makes the character too sharp.
Also, the proportion of the face, especially the eyes 👁👁, it was unnatural. You can see the right eye is too small compared to the left one, they’re not on the same level too. The eyes can hv some more curves around the end, smaller, instead of going up. That goes the same for the forehead.
On the other hand, the neck, mouth, ears and nose can be bigger. The bang could go wider too, for now it all leading the same direction—down. Like a lifeless seaweed, especially when Itona’s hair are kinda like porcupine.
Koro-sensei got 100000/10 ✔️✔️✔️

2) The Cute BIG Eyes boy
The face shape has gone better now, but only on the left side on the cheek. The eyes shapes are also getting better and natural too. The pupils are round, so cute! However, they are way too big for this face proportion. Plus, the eyebrows could longer and thicker.
The nose has grown longer, which is good. The little dot seems like a bear nose though ><><. The mouth is small and cute, but too small 😣😣. Which is the same for the neck!
I started to draw upper body at that time. I can see the shoulders could hv more curves instead of a strange like. The shoulders shouldn’t be in a rectangle shape ❌ 🔲
The cloth in here is a symmetrical shape, this isn’t natural looking. It should be less cloth wrinkles on it as it hanging down on a body.
3) The BIG Head and small Body boy
It’s really common the make such mistake. But what’s got me gone crazy when I was looking back, it the really long and sharp face🤯😳. The face is out of proportion, the forehead is too long and large, which make the hair and bandanna like some extra parts instead part of him.
Bc the large head, the body in term look so small and thin.
4) The Naked Boy
I probably drew this 4 or 5 years ago, it was abt the time I moved to another fandom, so you may say it’s the last time I drew Itona years ago.
You can see I was starting to get a hand of the body and face proportion. It looks much better than the previous one, though the shoulders were still in a strange line, a bit too wide, and the chest too big too. Hey! At least I got the neck right ^^
However, the hair look like a pile of grass and the eyebrows are too high 🙄. The face is a bit round but cute no matter 😌
5) Final Review and all together
The most noticeable changes I hv made since the last one, is the facial features and detail though it’s not really so much detail lol, the hair look less messy and natural. The body has more curves too.
In all meaning, it’s look much natural than my old sketches, which it was an improvement. But tbh….I don’t feel there are any extreme changes between the last one and the recent one. Probably bc I don’t hv any color comparison only lineart hhh…
If you ask me do I feel disappointed? Yes, but only abt the small amount improvements. However, I am happy with my stage of skill, despite it isn’t much hhh😂
#itona horibe#assassination classroom#before vs after#sketch#fanart#improvment#review#some random stuff I type#probably no one seeing this lol#I wasn’t much different from years ago hhh#horibe itona

Progress made over past few months June - Sept 2020
I think it’s time I make an updated study plan I’m more likely to follow/that’s more in line with what I’m doing now. But first, I wanted to post some things I did manage to get done! I didn’t stick exactly to my original study plan, but I did make some progress! ovo)/
Goals met these past few months:
Chapters of chinese read: 45+. Chapters read since start of September: 30+ (Breakdown of novels: Tamen de Gushi, Hanshe - pingxie fanfic, 818 - pingxie fanfic, Modu - priest, some random short fanfics, and a lot of manhua strips which I ended up counting as just ‘1′ chapter combined. What is worth noting to me is I did much better with consistently reading when I jumped around reading whatever I wanted, instead of sticking to a specific story until finished. I did not end up reading any of the novels I had originally ‘planned’ to read. Also by the end it could’ve been closer to 40+ since September, in September I stopped remembering to count)
Episodes watched in chinese (no english subs), since start of September: 19.5 (Breakdown of shows: Guardian rewatch, Bureau of Transformers rewatch, Love and Redemption, The Lost Tomb Reboot, The Lost Tomb 2. Again, worth noting that I do better just randomly watching something I want in chinese instead of trying to dedicatedly stick to doing this for certain shows etc.)
Got through 1000 cards in 2 months (0-1000 most common words, 6/14/2020)
Got through 1200 words (6/28/2020)
Got through HSK 4 flashcard words (1400 words, 6/3/2020)
Got through 1500 most common words (7/18/2020)
Got through 1750 most common words (7/23/2020)
Got through 2000 most common words (7/26/2020)
(You may notice a pattern, I motivated more when I counted by smaller intervals, seeing DONE in my progress notes really motivated me and kept me studying)
Get through 250 Heisig characters
get through 500 Heisig
get through 750 heisig
Get through 1000 heisig (8/30 - also FYI I do think it’s helped my reading speed/comfort noticeably)
Read through Mandarin Companion Sherlock (this was an interesting experience, the only thing I read that was on my original list - when I started it the reading was a bit difficult, but I’d already read 14 chapters of tamen de gushi. Once I was done with this it was easy, and i went back to tamen de gushi and THAT was noticeably easier too. This showed me extensive reading does help improve my skills, and also doing something hard makes other things easier later).
Watched 3 tprs chinese videos on youtube (i like tprs videos, i have zero ability to focus on youtube though and just procrastinate)
It wasn’t a goal, just an experiment, but I ended up doing some Listening Reading Method in September. Silent Reading: 5 Chapters, Daomubiji: 1 Chapter, SVSSS: 2 Chapters. So a total of 8 chapters studied with l-r method. This is only counting chapters I’ve done Step 3 Listening in Target Language, Reading in English. It does not count time spent on Step 1 or 2, or any repeated steps I did. I am aiming to do more in October, as I plan to switch my study method up a lot. In addition, with several of my chinese-novel chapters, I’ve been reading them intensively, then going back and listening to the audio, to work on both reading and listening more.
Personal goals met these past few months:
Finished writing WMMSD - which amounted to writing 60k words this September! And finishing my first ever long piece of writing at 266k words! I’m really proud of myself, and now I know I can finish long projects! The key is an outline of major events in each chapters/arc, apparently. And playing kingdom hearts ost instrumental music, and just getting in the right focus to write. I did about 1 chapter every 2 days (so 20 pages every 2 days). Also toward the end I started learning to be a bit more concise at 10 pages a chapter, which I was happy about.
Completed Chloe Ting 2 Week Workout Shred, doing 2-4 exercises a day but not always the extra ones. I lost no weight but noticed significant improvements in my stomach and arm muscles, which was nice since my surgery/health had made my stomach muscles very weak. So its good its more up to what it used to be now.
Things I noticed:
Not a surprise, I don’t stick to flashcards long. I am going to stop kidding myself - and probably will not go back to them except to cram through some section on an as-needed basis. For example, if I need to pick up X more words concretely, or if I need to study more hanzi concretely. This past September I totally dropped flashcards, despite doing them through the summer. That said - my summer flashcard study proved to me my brain is good at retaining the crammed info (or remembering it quickly) so I am not too sad over missing reviews. I’ll make it up later, if I need it and go back to cards.
I really want to work on listening skills more. These past few months, my focus went into dongchinese’s tone trainer and pinyin/tones guide (which I’ve found very helpful and am still going through meticulously), into the Spoonfed Chinese Audio files I have (which seem to be helping me much more than the actual flashcards - I focus more on listening, and analysing what I hear - and this is good since the cards are more for reading which I practice by actually reading a lot already). I have also been adding just random listening to audiobook chapters, shows without subtitles, and Listening-Reading method in attempts to improve listening skills more. I very much want to drag up listening comprehension closer to my reading skills. L-R Method I have been seeing potential in... I already notice it improving my listening comprehension a bit, and if I do Step 2 with word lookup (or after Step 3 with knowledge of the meanings fresh in my head), or do an alternative extra-step 3 which is english audio with chinese text (like with DMBJ on MTLnovels with siri voice), then I can use L-R to work on reading skill as well.
I’ve been very motivated by reading lately as well. So I’ve been reading a lot. I’ve been switching between extensive reading and intensive. I plan to keep doing this generally, and see if it helps. With Hanshe (the pingxie fanfic), the first 4-5 chapters were brutally hard and I intensively read them. Then I went back and extensively read them and just looked up problem words I still couldn’t remember - while listening to the audio and trying to follow along. So the first time I’m intensively reading, then the second time I either practice extensive reading and/or practice listening. After the first 4-5 chapters I noticed myself picking up some new story-specific words, and getting better at reading some parts extensively. So I do think overall this experience is helping me. With the audio-addition I don’t think its helping my listening skills much, but it is helping me attach sound to new words/characters. I am picking up new characters but more slowly (compared to new words spelled with hanzi i already know).
In general, I’ve noticed improvements from reading. So I’ll continue reading. I’d like to keep working both intensive/extensive practice in, and in listening to audio to help keep listening skills matched to new words.
In general, I plan to add more Listening-Reading Method and variations on the method. I think its helping me a lot with listening, and to some degree with reading just because in Step 2 (before or after Step 3) I often read the chinese and start noticing some words, especially when I look up a few problem words. Just in general though, the repetition of subject matter and words is helping me to pick up a lot. And I REALLY want to drag up my listening comprehension. I noticed with dmbj, which I did L-R steps 2-3 over and over a few times with, that I know nearly every word in chapter 1 now lol. So something about those steps, although I’m still not sure which order would be most effective, definitely improves listening and reading skills.
I need to continue to do some extensive reading. While I think I pick up less new words, it consolidates the things I’ve learned (which is why I’m trying to reread Hanshe chapters extensively after doing it intensively). And I think it makes me actually practice the problem solving of reading - like when i read MoDu physical copy.
I do still think mnemonics for characters will help me with new words, so I’d still like to read through Alan Hoenig’s Learn Chinese Characters book... as for my mnemonics flashcards, I may go back to them when i either feel i need to cram them to boost my abilities, or when i feel in the mood to focus on flashcards.
new ios Speech Screen feature is great. I can open up MTLnovel.com, can put on ‘show raws’ to see a parallel chinese/english text, then swipe 2 fingers down from the top of my screen for a screen reader. The chinese voice sounds almost as good as Pleco, and it ALSO READS the english. So I can look at chinese when hearing the english, look at english when hearing the chinese, or any combination of ‘listening-reading method’ approaches! I can also play it as background audio, to hear sentences compared in chinese then english. This is something I’ve wanted - english/chinese audio of novels, in the same format as my Chinese Spoonfed Audio files. I know that audio has been helping me - hearing the comparisons. So I think listening to these novels parallel text in the background is also good ‘comprehensible’ input to study from. I don’t even have to record it (although I could if I wanted to). I can just play it then listen. And I can also play it while reading. It’s very useful. I’ve been desperately wanting a tool to allow me to do this - make audio of both chinese and english read in sequence without the automated voice skipping half.
My goals for October will likely be: listening to comprehensible audio in down time like Chinese Spoonfed Audiofiles/MTL parallel texts with Speech Screen (so in the bg walking, at work, etc), Reading (intensively mostly, but also extensively rereading chapters sometimes or as desired with random stuff), some manhua reading extensively if desired, Listening-Reading Method (try to do it earnestly for a while since I’ve got several stories to do it with), and maybe read some of Alan Hoenig’s book (just reading through - don’t be a perfectionist!). Knowing me... I’ll probably be able to do at least some of these, I doubt I’ll read the Alan Hoenig book because reference books are hell to me but we’ll see... I do think it’ll help. Regardless, I think as long as I do some of this I should at least maintain progress and improve a bit. A lot of this is what I’m mostly doing currently. I plan to track chapters read, and listening-reading chapters done. I won’t track audio files - but ideally I’d like to go through something (With Chinese Spoonfed audio I think I should listen to 1 new, and 1 older as ‘spaced review’ as I progress. With mtlnovel I think I should just progress through a novel since words often repeat).

Animated Matryoshka Dolls in CSS
Here’s a fun one. How might we create a set of those cool Matryoshka dolls where they nest inside one another... but in CSS?
I toyed with this idea in my head for a little while. Then, I saw a tweet from CSS-Tricks and the article image had the dolls. I took that as a sign! It was time to put fingers to the keyboard.
Our goal here is to make these fun and interactive, where we can click on a doll to open it up and reveal another, smaller doll. Oh, and stick with just CSS for the functionality. And while we’re at it, let’s replace the dolls with our own character, say a CodePen bear. Something like this:
We won't dwell on making things pretty to start. Let's get some markup on the page and thrash out the mechanics first.
We can’t have an infinite amount of dolls. When we reach the innermost doll, it'd be nice to be able to reset the dolls without having to do a page refresh. A neat trick for this is to wrap our scene in an HTML form. That way we can use an input and set the type attribute to reset to avoid using any JavaScript.
<form> <input type="reset" id="reset"/> <label for="reset" title="Reset">Reset</label> </form>
Next, we need some dolls. Or bears. Or something to start with. The key here will be to use the classic checkbox hack and any associated form labels. As a note, I’m going to use Pug to handle the markup because it supports loops, making things a little easier. But, you can certainly write the HTML by hand. Here’s the start with form fields and labels that set up the checkbox hack.
CodePen Embed Fallback
Try clicking some of the inputs and hitting the Reset input. They all become unchecked. Nice, we’ll use that.
We have some interactivity but nothing is really happening yet. Here’s the plan:
We’ll only show one checkbox at a time
Checking a checkbox should reveal the label for the next checkbox.
When we get to the last checkbox, there our only option should be to reset the form.
The trick will be to make use of the CSS adjacent sibling combinator (+).
input:checked + label + input + label { display: block; }
When a checkbox is checked, we need to show the label for the next doll, which will be three siblings along in the DOM. How do we make the first label visible? Give it an explicit display: block via inline styles in our markup. Putting this together, we have something along these lines:
CodePen Embed Fallback
Clicking each label reveals the next. Hold on, the last label isn’t shown! That’s correct. And that’s because the last label doesn’t have a checkbox. We need to add a rule that caters to that last label.
input:checked + label + input + label, input:checked + label + label { display: block; }
CodePen Embed Fallback
Cool. We're getting somewhere. That's the basic mechanics. Now things are going to get a little trickier.
Basic styling
So, you might be thinking, “Why aren’t we hiding the checked label?” Good question! But, if we hide it straight away, we won’t have any transition between the current doll and the next. Before we start animating our dolls, let’s create basic boxes that will represent a doll. We can style them up so they mimic the doll outline without the detail.
.doll { color: #fff; cursor: pointer; height: 200px; font-size: 2rem; left: 50%; position: absolute; text-align: center; top: 50%; transform: translate(-50%, -50%); width: 100px; } .doll:nth-of-type(even) { background: #00f; } .doll:nth-of-type(odd) { background: #f00; }
CodePen Embed Fallback
Clicking one doll instantly reveals the next one and, when we’ve reached the last doll, we can reset the form to start again. That’s what we want here.
The mechanics
We are going to animate the dolls based on a center point. Our animation will consist of many steps:
Slide the current doll out to the left.
Open the doll to reveal the next one.
Move the next doll where the current one started.
Make the current doll fade out.
Assign the next doll as the current doll.
Let’s start by sliding the current doll out to the left. We apply an animation when we click a label. Using the :checked pseudo-selector we can target the current doll. At this point, it’s worth noting that we are going to use CSS variables to control animation speed and behavior. This will make it easier to chain animations on the labels.
:root { --speed: 0.25; --base-slide: 100; --slide-distance: 60; } input:checked + label { animation: slideLeft calc(var(--speed) * 1s) forwards; } @keyframes slideLeft { to { transform: translate(calc((var(--base-slide) * -1px) + var(--slide-distance) * -1%), 0); } }
That looks great. But there’s an issue. As soon as we click a label, we could click it again and reset the animation. We don't want that to happen.
How can we get around this? We can remove pointer events from a label once it’s been clicked.
input:checked + label { animation: slideLeft calc(var(--speed) * 1s) forwards; pointer-events: none; }
Great! Now once we have started, we can’t stop the animation chain from happening.
CodePen Embed Fallback
Next up, we need to crack open the doll to reveal the next one. This is where things get tricky because we are going to need some extra elements, not only to create the effect that the doll is opening up, but also to reveal the next doll inside of it. That's right: we need to duplicate the inner doll. The trick here is to reveal a "fake" doll that we swap for the real one once we've animated it. This also means delaying the reveal of the next label.
Now our markup updates labels so that they contains span elements.
<label class="doll" for="doll--1"> <span class="doll doll--dummy"></span> <span class="doll__half doll__half--top">Top</span> <span class="doll__half doll__half--bottom">Bottom</span> </label>
These will act as the “dummy” doll as well as the lid and base for the current doll.
.doll { color: #fff; cursor: pointer; height: 200px; font-size: 2rem; position: absolute; text-align: center; width: 100px; } .doll:nth-of-type(even) { --bg: #00f; --dummy-bg: #f00; } .doll:nth-of-type(odd) { --bg: #f00; --dummy-bg: #00f; } .doll__half { background: var(--bg); position: absolute; width: 100%; height: 50%; left: 0; } .doll__half--top { top: 0; } .doll__half--bottom { bottom: 0; } .doll__dummy { background: var(--dummy-bg); height: 100%; width: 100%; position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; }
The lid requires three translations to create the opening effect: one to pop it up, one to move it left and then one to pop it down.
@keyframes open { 0% { transform: translate(0, 0); } 33.333333333333336% { transform: translate(0, -100%); } 66.66666666666667% { transform: translate(-100%, -100%); } 100% { transform: translate(-100%, 100%); } }
Next is where we can use CSS custom properties to handle changing values. Once the doll has slid over to the left, we can open it. But how do we know how long to delay it from opening until that happens? We can use the --speed custom property we defined earlier to calculate the correct delay.
It looks a little quick if we use the --speed value as it is, so let’s multiply it by two seconds:
input:checked + .doll { animation: slideLeft calc(var(--speed) * 1s) forwards; pointer-events: none; } input:checked + .doll .doll__half--top { animation: open calc(var(--speed) * 2s) calc(var(--speed) * 1s) forwards; // highlight }
Much better:
CodePen Embed Fallback
Now we need to move the inner “dummy” doll to the new position. This animation is like the open animation in that it consists of three stages. Again, that’s one to move up, one to move right, and one to set down. It's like the slide animation, too. We are going to use CSS custom properties to determine the distance that the doll moves.
:root { // Introduce a new variable that defines how high the dummy doll should pop out. --pop-height: 60; } @keyframes move { 0% { transform: translate(0, 0) translate(0, 0); } 33.333333333333336% { transform: translate(0, calc(var(--pop-height) * -1%)) translate(0, 0); } 66.66666666666667% { transform: translate(0, calc(var(--pop-height) * -1%)) translate(calc((var(--base-slide) * 1px) + var(--slide-distance) * 1%), 0); } 100% { transform: translate(0, calc(var(--pop-height) * -1%)) translate(calc((var(--base-slide) * 1px) + var(--slide-distance) * 1%), calc(var(--pop-height) * 1%)); } }
Almost there!
CodePen Embed Fallback
The only thing is that the next doll is available as soon as we click a doll. that means we can spam click our way through the set.
Technically, the next doll shouldn’t show until the “fake” one has moved into place. It’s only once the “fake” doll is in place that we can hide it and reveal the real one. That means we going to use zero-second scale animations! That's right. We can play pretend by delaying two zero-second animations and using animation-fill-mode.
@keyframes appear { from { transform: scale(0); } }
We actually only need one set of @keyframes. because we can re-use what we have to create the opposite movement with animation-direction: reverse. With that in mind, all our animations get applied something like this:
// The next doll input:checked + .doll + input + .doll, // The last doll (doesn't have an input) input:checked + .doll + .doll { animation: appear 0s calc(var(--speed) * 5s) both; display: block; } // The current doll input:checked + .doll, // The current doll that isn't the first. Specificity prevails input:checked + .doll + input:checked + .doll { animation: slideLeft calc(var(--speed) * 1s) forwards; pointer-events: none; } input:checked + .doll .doll__half--top, input:checked + .doll + input:checked + .doll .doll__half--top { animation: open calc(var(--speed) * 2s) calc(var(--speed) * 1s) forwards; } input:checked + .doll .doll__dummy, input:checked + .doll + input:checked + .doll .doll__dummy { animation: move calc(var(--speed) * 2s) calc(var(--speed) * 3s) forwards, appear 0s calc(var(--speed) * 5s) reverse forwards; }
Note how important the variables are, especially where we are chaining animations. That gets us almost where we need to be.
CodePen Embed Fallback
I can hear it now: "They're all the same size!" Yep. That's the missing piece. They need to scale down. The trick here is to adjust the markup again and make use of CSS custom properties yet again.
<input id="doll--0" type="checkbox"/> <label class="doll" for="doll--0" style="display: block; --doll-index: 0;"> <span class="doll__dummy-container"> <span class="doll__dummy"></span> </span> //highlight <span class="doll__container"> <span class="doll__half doll__half--top"></span> <span class="doll__half doll__half--bottom"></span> </span> </label>
We just introduced a CSS custom property inline that tells us the index of the doll. We can use this to generate a scale of each half as well as the fake inner doll. The halves will have to scale to match the actual doll size, but the fake inner doll scale will need to match that of the next doll. Tricky!
We can apply these scales inside the containers so that our animations are not affected.
:root { --scale-step: 0.05; } .doll__container, .doll__dummy-container { height: 100%; left: 0; position: absolute; top: 0; width: 100%; } .doll__container { transform: scale(calc(1 - ((var(--doll-index)) * var(--scale-step)))); transform-origin: bottom; } .doll__dummy { height: 100%; left: 0; position: absolute; top: 0; transform: scale(calc(1 - ((var(--doll-index) + 1) * var(--scale-step)))); transform-origin: bottom center; width: 100%; }
Note how the .doll__dummy class uses var(--doll-index) + 1) to calculate the scale so that it matches the next doll. 👍
Lastly, we re-assign the animation to the .doll__dummy-container class instead of the .doll__dummy class.
input:checked + .doll .doll__dummy-container, input:checked + .doll + input:checked + .doll .doll__dummy-container { animation: move calc(var(--speed) * 2s) calc(var(--speed) * 3s) forwards, appear 0s calc(var(--speed) * 5s) reverse forwards; }
Here's a demo where the containers have been given a background color to see what’s happening.
CodePen Embed Fallback
We can see that, although the content size changes, they remain the same size. This makes for consistent animation behavior and makes the code easier to maintain.
Finishing touches
Wow, things are looking pretty slick! All we need are some finishing touches and we are done!
The scene starts to look cluttered because we’re stacking the “old” dolls off to the side when a new one is introduced. So let's slide a doll out of view when the next one is revealed to clean that mess up.
@keyframes slideOut { from { transform: translate(calc((var(--base-slide) * -1px) + var(--slide-distance) * -1%), 0); } to { opacity: 0; transform: translate(calc((var(--base-slide) * -1px) + var(--slide-distance) * -2%), 0); } } input:checked + .doll, input:checked + .doll + input:checked + .doll { animation: slideLeft calc(var(--speed) * 1s) forwards, slideOut calc(var(--speed) * 1s) calc(var(--speed) * 6s) forwards; pointer-events: none; }
The new slideOut animation fades the doll out while it translates to the left. Perfect. 👍
That’s it for the CSS trickery we need to make this effect work. All that’s left style the dolls and the scene.
We have many options to style the dolls. We could use a background image, CSS illustration, SVG, or what have you. We could even throw together some emoji dolls that use random inline hues!
CodePen Embed Fallback
Let’s go with inline SVG.
I’m basically using the same underlying mechanics we’ve already covered. The difference is that I’m also generating inline variables for hue and lightness so the bears sport different shirt colors.
CodePen Embed Fallback
There we have it! Stacking dolls — err, bears — with nothing but HTML and CSS! All the code for all the steps is available in this CodePen collection. Questions or suggestions? Feel free to reach out to me here in the comments.

11 questions. @crocordile tagged me!
1. What was the last picture you took with your phone/camera that you liked? Can you post it?
With my actual camera was this photo of Brighton Beach, and I did post it! On my phone, a picture of Central park at lunch for my instagram story, and, uh, it wasn’t that good. I have better photos of the park honestly. My phone camera blows.
2. What’s the last meme you enjoyed, and a meme you can’t stand?
I’m going to answer the second question first because I fucking hate the distracted boyfriend meme. holy shit I haven’t hated a meme this much in so long. I was annoyed by the recent spongebob one but not nearly as much as this one. I can’t even explain why, it just...ugh I can’t.
Last one I enjoyed, I dunno. I liked Babadook the LGBT Icon. That one was fun. But I forget these things so quickly and most of them irritate me at least a little, so, I don’t have very many positive answers here whoooooops.
3. Give me a song and what it makes you think of, or what you like about it
I have a whole tag/post series about this! If there’s one that catches your eye (this goes for anyone) I would be happy to tell the story behind why a specific song makes me viscerally remember a place or time. But! I will part the curtain and tell you a post/story that’s germinating in my head, and another story that’s just very sweet.
1: The Beatles - Let It Be is a song I found later in life, and adored right away. I can’t listen to it and be stressed--can anyone? I love to listen to it musically, the chord progression and vocals are so simple and beautiful. But once, while listening, I laid down on my bed and closed my eyes and as I listened, I thought about all of the beautiful places I’ve been, things I’ve seen, times when I felt at peace. Next to a stream in the woods, looking at the stars, walking through a campground in the pouring rain. I love doing that to this day and I would love to do a Let It Be + everywhere post with some of my photos, but I’m not sure it would get across the mood as intensely as I want it to--so I’m still working on the idea.
2: Jerry Garcia (/the Grateful Dead) - Bird Song is really lovely in a lot of ways, but it’s an extra-special and very sweet memory for me. I listened to the Dead a lot growing up, because of my dad. They’ve been my favorite band for my entire life, and every single song that I love has significance in my life. My dad is not always the most emotionally demonstrative person (and honestly, neither am I, when it comes to being vulnerable and sincere) but when I was very small, he used to pick me up and dance with me to this song. I don’t think he ever did that for any other song, and as a rule he doesn’t dance. So it always makes me think of him and being a kid and feeling loved and safe.
4. The last time you were pleasantly surprised
Every time I get on the subway expecting a shitshow and it all goes fine! but more hilariously, the time my bosses called me into their office at the end of the day to ask me to google pictures of ducks in toupees. I am nothing if not immediately down for ridiculous shit for no reason.
5. A physical book you have and love as an item
These days, I mainly buy physical books because I love them as items, so I have quite a few! Standouts are an anniversary edition (one of ‘em) of Calvin and Hobbes, and a beautifully old-fashioned bound copy of Much Ado About Nothing. I also have two of the illustrated Harry Potter books. I mainly read ebooks nowadays but those are some examples of books that just can’t be replicated properly on a screen, and I love them all the more for it.
6. Your phone’s bg and/or lockscreen?
Both are the same: the top photo in this post. I took it at the New York Botanical Garden, in the rose garden. It’s good because having icons over it doesn’t make my screen too busy, and it scrolls when I switch screens so it’s like I’m scrolling through a rose garden.
7. I know I always ask this one, but is there a gif or reaction image you like but that you haven’t been able to use yet? If not, just give me your current favorite gif.
there are so many but this is probably the one that makes me laugh the hardest even though I have the least use for it
8. One thing you would change in your favorite media thing (book, movie, show, video game, etc)
I mean, okay, I don’t have a favorite media, but it’s the same answer for all of them, I just want better representation. and I’m at the point where I’m done yelling at the ones who do it wrong and want to look for the ones that do it right.
That’s the big stuff. I have smaller quibbles with different things (Sam leaving Frodo in the RotK movie was fucking bullshit) (why the fuck did Remus and Tonks have to die, FUCK you) (*rolls out a giant parchment of “gay ships that should’ve been canon”*) (okay that last one is a big quibble) but I’d have to take them one at a time and currently I’m Tired so, onward to better things I guess.
9. A non-American movie you like
I haven’t seen many--I don’t typically know where to start? But I adored Mystère à la Tour Eiffel, I am here all DAY for adorable interracial Victorian lesbians.
The only other one I can think of is Spirited Away, which of course was lovely. And I need to watch more Studio Ghibli films, I know this, I’ll get to it eventually!!
10. You’re transported to the setting of the last fic you read. How screwed are you?
Uhh not very? I’ve been reading just...Yuri on Ice fic. Set in canon. So most likely I’d be in Japan or Russia, except the rose-glasses non-homophobic YOI versions, and I’d be so completely fine with that. Unless I had to compete at the Grand Prix or something, which would, granted, be a problem.
(Ask me in a week or two when I’ve gone down a hole of TAZ fic, it’s gonna happen and it’s gonna be bad.)
11. stealing this from VV but it’s a great question: what’s the nearest art thing to you rn?
It’s an an ink painting/drawing of a very disturbing looking anglerfish, and I honestly think it’s better if you just try to imagine it. Also on that wall, from right to left:
right under the anglerfish, a silhouette of Aaron Burr with the words life doesn’t discriminate between the sinners and the saints
a garland of multicolored stars
a knitted jellyfish
a lamp with a colorful striped shade and a dinosaur at the base
a Ravenclaw banner
a framed collage of pictures of me and my best friends
(bonus question: what’s a fandom I have that you hate/blacklist/don’t get?)
I blacklist “Game of Thrones” and a bunch of character names from it (and desperately wish everyone would stop using “got” as a tag because that’s an actual word that I’m nervous to blacklist even as “#got”) but not really because I don’t like it, I just haven’t gotten into it and am trying not to learn too much about it in case I do pick it up someday, I don’t want to know too much. Also Dragon Age because I don’t play it and probably never will and I always start reading posts about it thinking I know what’s happening and getting wildly confused. But there’s nothing I hate! If there was I wouldn’t stick around lol.

through the strait gates(guomen) intro+01//by priest
disclaimer: not my work (except for the translating), all credits go to priest
intro(written by me, as there’s no summary in the original work except for the Bible passage):

Through the Strait Gates//Guomen
"Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it." -Matthew 7:14
Guomen, 過門/过门, meaning marriage in Chinese. If explained literally, it means going past the gates/door––a reference to the Bible(see above).
"Through the Strait Gates": to me, it's the best way to explain it.
The gate's narrow, the road small for them.
Their past and future interwoven into a tangled, messed up web.
Thirteen years of sour and bittersweet memories. And a decade in between that washed out everything they had like water, leaving only stark, plain dullness.
From pt. scallions to pt. onions to pt. sliced green onions, tears and more tears and tears sprinkled on top.
01
It was snowing lightly outside, the year at its end. The masses, in a rush to get home, were stuck halfway through their way home. A rickety folk song was played on repeat, and none of the two in the car spoke a single word, awkward silence between them. Xu Xilin had a hand on the steering wheel. He looked up through the windshield, watching rows and rows of cars extend all the way to the horizon. Brake lights flashed on and off around them—it was going to be a long time before he could drive through the traffic. Xu turned his gaze to the left, and saw Mr. Do Xun prop up the side of his face by one hand, spacing out. Though it had been many years since they last met, Do Xun was aiming for ignoring Xu Xilin's presence for the whole ride. Xu Xilin sighed to himself. Then he suddenly decided to swerve the car round in the tiny gap they were in, showing off his driving skills along the way, and successfully wove out of the traffic jam, snaking into a tiny alley. Do Xun finally paid attention to him, swiveling his gaze to glance at him. Xu Xilin immediately reacted to it—he had been extra alert to Do Xun's presence since the start of the ride. "I think that taking a smaller road will be faster—"Xu Xilin said. "So that you can get rid of me sooner?" Do Xun laughed scathingly. "—and I can also get a few flowers along the way."They both opened their mouths to say something, and then went quiet simultaneously. Xu Xilin frowned, looking like he was going to go on a rant, but then decided to put up with Do Xun. "What are you getting pissed off about? You know that he's been like this since forever." Xu Xilin thought, and turned his attention back to weaving through the tiny lanes. The northwest winds weaved into a discordant harmony with the barking of dogs, and the folk singer's voice became wispier and wispier, close to breaking. Xu Xilin stopped the car in front of a store that called itself "*Lao Ye". He dug his phone out of his pocket and called a contact. "Hey, it's me. I'm in front of your flower shop. Bring me a few orchids or kumkrats or something like that—I need them for New Year gifts." "So you're bothering to buy flowers, *'Lin-zi? I watched the stars tonight, and did a telling for ya—they say you're gonna encounter some misfortune soon!"A swaggering voice shouted from the other side of the phone. Xu Xilin: "......" The flower shop's window on the side of the street flew open, and a non-mainstream-styled young man with a tiny moustache poked out of it. The apparent dumbass set down his phone, concentrated his energy in his belly, and yelled out with an even louder voice, "Did you hear that Do Xun's back?" Xu Xilin wished that his arm were two meters longer so that he could slap that dumbass right onto the window frame. The window on the shotgun's side rolled down slowly, revealing Do Xun's face. "Yeah, I've heard." The store owner's expression twisted into a strangled wild chicken's. Then the muted store owner and a stony-faced Do Xun helped Xu Xilin carry the plants into the back of the car together. Before the two left, the shop owner scratched his head for quite a while, and then finally decide to pull Xu Xilin back, asking, "So, uh, there's a class reunion next week, are you going to attend it?" Xu Xilin wanted to get rid of the awkward people as soon as he could. He answered detachedly, "I'll think about it for a while." "Just go. You haven't showed up even once in many years," The shop owner retorted. Not even wanting to look at the flower shop owner's face, Xu Xilin didn't reply. He merely waved, and drove away. Half an hour later, they finally arrived at the hotel Do Xun was staying at. Do Xun got off the car without speaking a single word, and stood outside of it, staring at Xu Xilin silently. Xu Xilin let out an inaudible relaxing sigh. "That'll be it. Get some rest—I'll have to leave now." Do Xun nodded, and then dug inside the pocket of his coat, realizing the cigarette box inside was empty. He instinctively asked, "Hey..." Xu Xilin stopped the car half a meter away. "Hmm?" Do Xun stopped himself from asking, You got a cigarette?: he remembered that Xu Xilin didn't smoke. Xu Xilin never smoked, and even never drank any alcohol if he didn't have to. When he was young, he was always careful in fights—he was that type of person that didn't look responsible on the outside, but actually was inside. "You need anything else?" Xu Xilin asked. "Was it because you didn't want to see me that you never went to any of the reunions?" "......" Do Xun probably could never leave any mental personal space for anyone, being the *wooden club he was. "I've simply been busy for the past few years." Xu Xilin said stiffly. "So you're not busy this year, right? I'm going. Are you?" Do Xun locks his burning gaze on him. Whenever Do Xun spoke, it brought up a thin layer of white steam. He stood in the stern winter like a sharp sketch, lacking red and green colors. He did look good, Xu Xilin had to admit—but his gaze had daggers hidden in them, and a knife concealed in the tip of his tongue. An exquisite and clean human arsenal. Xu Xilin's eyes were close to being pierced through by how sharp he was. He could only give him a skimpy and perfunctory answer. "If I'm free on that day, maybe. I'm not sure." Xu Xilin said. Do Xun had nothing else to say. He stood in stiff silence, and watched Xu Xilin leave, perfect manners and perfect politeness and perfect small talk and all. "Can you please turn back and give a me a single glance?"Do Xun thought desperately. I'll jump down from a rooftop for you to turn back and look at me. Unfortunately, Xu Xilin couldn't read his mind and drove away cleanly, not leaving a even a single trace. Do Xun lost his chance to jump off a building. The horrible folk song was still on repeat in the car, and Xu Xilin drove, the dusk surrounding him, closing into him from all directions. His vision was blurry—perhaps a fog? It was the thirteenth year since he and Do Xun had known each other. They've been together, broke it off with each other, wanted to be together forever, and also wanted to never see each other again. A notification popped up on his phone, and it let out a small "ding!". Xu Xilin glanced at it—Do Xun had even bothered to give him a full-star rating. The sky was still clear, the ground was still heavy, the traffic jam was still there, the Earth still hadn't destroyed itself yet, and the rest of the years he had was still rich and plentiful. But the school buildings and papers and pens of the past were left bygone. —and the only one that became anew was the person from the past. Author's Note: The only novels I've written of the same genre/topic is Their Lives(BL) and Flowing Fifteen Years(BG). They're both terrible, so from the past data, this is probably going to be terrible too. Translator's Note #1: 1)Lao Ye: Chinese speaking language for maternal grandfather. 2)Lin-zi: Xiao-Lin-Zi in the original text. Xiao meaning little, Lin as in the last character of Xu Xilin's name, Zi just to accentuate the "young(er), little" meaning and add some verbal stuff—kind of like chan in Japanese but doesn't have the same complete meaning-ish effect. 3)Wooden club: Bangchui in Chinese. Basically means someone who is dumb when it comes to Chinese social interaction and its messy properness. (Me!) thx for reading;)
updates won’t be frequent lol

[Unpaid] "Wayward" animated pilot project (closed)
I'm going to put this note first to be clear: I would prefer POC voice actors for POC roles if possible. I am not a POC myself, but I think having a diverse cast of characters is one thing, but a diverse voice cast as well is even better. Thanks! Hello, all, I’m Mack, a professional animator (toon boom and flash), and I’m trying to create a new webseries called Wayward, that has been in minor development for about a year now. I have written a pilot script and am looking for voice actors to fill the main roles. Wayward is a show heavily inspired by RPGSs and adventure games, especially whimsical ones like the Mother series. It’s a story about a group of kids who are all potential Questers in this world, recruited by the YHA (The Young Hero’s Association) to join their cause and go out on hero’s journeys specific to their own interests. But not every kid can be a hero, some people’s hearts just aren’t in it, no matter how badly they may want it, and this will cause conflict in the story. That’s not the case for Milo, however, a good natured but free-willed individual whose ambition sets them on a tunnel-vision path towards their goal, ignoring danger, the odds, and difficulty level. They’re obsessed with space exploration, and they’ve wanted to get up there since they were little. When they hear about a mysterious person known as the Questmaster visiting their town they’re ecstatic. The space-quest page on his website peaked their star-bound interest, and this quest opportunity is also a great way for Milo to spend time with their dad, who is a rather famous doctor in the area and often away. However, while he’s on board to spend time with his kid, this whole quest show has him suspicious there’s more going on. The pilot episode centres around both setting the story in motion and having the father and child overcome adversity strengthening their bond. This casting call is for the pilot episode. I would love to be able to carry over voice actors to the next planned episodes if the pilot is successful. I do, however, plan on animating a few shorts with the characters who do not show up in episode one, I have labelled them accordingly. The list of characters goes by highest priority to lowest priority. The episode itself is about half an hour in run time but that may change as the production goes on (if need be I may separate it into two 11 minute halves). As of right now I’m only asking for volunteer work. This is because Wayward is being funded directly out of my pocket, and made with help from friends. If the pilot is successful I will open a patreon to crowdfund the production of the rest of the planned episodes. I am committed to making this any way I can, regardless of finances, and I’d like to have something to show for our efforts first. I would like you to have your own equipment. I understand asking for volunteers is a big request already so don’t go out of your way. So long as it’s clean and clear, it’ll do just fine (Snowball and Blue microphones are pretty good for an inexpensive choice). Below is a list of main characters and bg characters I need for this episode. I should note Milo themself doesn’t talk. Think of them as your silent protagonist, though they aren’t mute. They’re deaf, so they do still have a voice, but I’m putting them at low priority since they technically have no lines. A lot of the characters are POC, so if you’re a person of colour yourself, please try out! I'm not myself so even if you end up not doing that I would value your input if something seems wrong or if you notice room for improvement. Info on characters below: Milo’s Dad Age: 36, M, Doctor He’s married and loves his kid and his wife more than anything, but he worries for them considering how headlong they both run into the fray. Though he’s away often due to his job, he takes every opportunity he can to spend time with Milo. He’s a sturdy guy, but calm and thoughtful, not strict. He isn’t afraid of his emotions, but he tries to keep himself collected. He’d have a clear voice, not harsh, and with a humble air about him. While this world isn't Earth exactly, I did design him with Cree in mind. A more in-depth description of him can be found in the doc provided. He has the most lines of anyone in the episode and appears throughout the entire script. A link to his auditions doc The QuestMaster Age: 28 - 34, M, Occupation in name I have him listed as male but that isn’t a strict requirement because he is a very androgynous character. He’s a recruiter for the YHA. He’s a boisterous, showy, bold person who loves talking and loves his job. He probably has stashes full of glitter stored away for emergency use. He’d have an announcer-type voice, the kind of person who sounds like at any moment he might like to break into song. A more in-depth description of him can be found in the doc provided. He has probably the second most lines in the episode, and the most monologues. He appears in a large chunk of act 1 and a smaller bit in act 3. A link to his auditions doc The QuestMaster’s Assistant Age 24 -27, NB (non-binary), Occupation in name In a word? Tired. They would always rather be sleeping. Not that they hate their job or are bored by it, but because they’re exhausted all the time and just want to go back to bed as soon as they can. They assist the Questmaster with forms and dealing with parents. I don’t have too much in mind specifically for their voice, so play with it a little. Whatever ‘tired but trying’ sounds like to you. They're genderless so anything goes in terms of voice type. They appear in the Questmaster's segments though they have much fewer lines. They're a very blunt person, being so tired all the time. A link to their auditions doc Milo Age 12 going on 13, NB (non-binary), space-enthusiast Milo is deaf and doesn’t speak, so all their lines are mostly just reaction noises, laughing, gasps, etc. They love space more than anything. Their ambition is their driving factor and they’re a big daydreamer. They face their goals head-on, but not without a little thought and observation.They can get blindsided by their own ambition, however, and they never walk around–always through. Milo appears through the entire script. Milo is a little different to handle. I don't have a specific doc for them as they have no spoken lines. Instead I will list a few action noises here. Milo is a very vibrant person, they should be as expressive as possible without saying a word. Think Toon Link from the legend of zelda for a more expressive silent protagonist, then double it. Line one: Giggling, laughing, then burst of laughter Line two: Growling with frustration Line three: Getting hit by something (you decide what), recovering and throwing an attack of their own. Line four: Battle cry Leora Age 13, F, aspiring writer She may not have a speaking role in episode one, but she is IN it briefly and an important character to the series so if I can find a voice for her, she’ll probably get a few introduction lines in her scene, and a short. animation to introduce her properly. She’s prominent in episode 2 onward, however. She’s a few months older than Milo, a writer, and a perfectionist. Her mother owns the town’s cat cafe and her older sisters work there. She spends a lot of time in the back room, writing. I don’t have too many specifics in mind for her voice, just that she isn’t too excitable but she shouldn’t come off as shy either, just a bit of an introvert (who talks to herself quite often) with a quirk for giving just about everything a backstory. Street cats, passers by, she just can't help it. More info on her can be found in the doc. A link to her auditions doc Alby Age 12, NB, Lover of all things avian They’re not in the first episode at all, but they’re also an important character who shows up in episode 2, and some shorts I’m thinking about, so I’m placing them here for that reason. Alby is two months younger than Milo. They’re a rough and tumble type, love running headlong into things and they never plan anything ahead, it’s always in the moment and acting on impulse. Their goals are less clear than Milo’s but they’d follow their friend anywhere. They definitely would sound excitable, enthusiastic and occasionally, their brain gets ahead of their words and they skip sentences and backtrack to explain things. It can be confusing, especially to those who rely on lip-reading. They mean well, though. More info on them is in the doc. Alby was intended as Metis. A link to their auditions doc Episode two would also debut Leora’s two 17 year old twin sisters, Mallou and Millie, as well as her mother Lilly and little brother Luca, but they are low priority right now and not in episode one. I have a few kids, parents, cafe workers, etc available, but none are priority and if I need extra voices, I will list another casting call. I am planning on doing some short animations involving the characters to introduce them as well, so those with few lines in the beginning can have focus in a 2-3 minute short animation. If you are interested in this project or would like to send an audition you can reach me at [email protected] Deadline is November 1st Thank you! -Mack http://dlvr.it/Pz9f86 www.voiceacting.space

[Unpaid] "Wayward" animated pilot project
I'm going to put this note first to be clear: I would prefer POC voice actors for POC roles if possible. Even if you end up not doing that I would value your input if something seems wrong or if you notice room for improvement.
