eddie helps you through the worst migraine you've ever had

part two of my mini migraine series!

cw: migraines (duh), crying, hospital mention

author's note: this is a retelling of the worst migraine I ever had. I'm thankful that I wrote it all down for my neurologist because those notes really helped me. And again, thank you @munson-blurbs and @corroded-hellfire for reading this through and telling me how it looked.

For all things considered, your day had started off pretty good. 

It was the first real spring day so you both decided to take a walk around town and did some shopping. Eddie stopped at the local game shop and picked up some new miniatures for Hellfire and you grabbed a new pair of dice, a beautiful set with koi fish that caught your eye immediately. Yogi almost knocked over a display with his tail from how hard he was wagging it. After that you all got lunch and ate outside, enjoying the buzz of the downtown area. The weather was perfect, allowing you to finally go out without a sweatshirt and all the trees and flowers were blooming. 

On the way home, you stopped by the local dog park and let Yogi off his leash to really tire him out. You and Eddie sat down on a bench and watched him run around in circles and play with other dogs. There were multiple times where the dog would run over to you with a tennis ball in his mouth. You weren’t sure where he got it from but you still threw it for him. Other times he’d just come over and jump up on either one of you to get some love from you guys. Soon he would be too big to comfortably hold on your lap so it was important to cherish these little moments while you still could. Once Yogi jumped off and ran to chase another dog, Eddie leaned over to whisper, “He’s definitely your kid, he always needs attention” into your ear. You turn to him and scoff before punching him in the arm. 

“Shut up! He’s my kid? He’s got your energy levels and chaotic personality!” Your boyfriend leans back in with a chuckle to wrap an arm around you, rubbing one of your arms to stave off the chill that hit you both from the breeze. The wind was blowing Eddie’s hair around and the afternoon sun was starting to shine onto both of you, making his beautiful brown eyes almost glow. 

Eddie stops to think for a moment before responding, “Well, he snores like you.” 

You raise your eyebrows at the accusation but immediately hit back with, “Ok well he has your eyes and hair color. Can’t deny that, can we?” The metalhead sits there for a moment in contemplation, trying to come up with some witty response that could surely beat yours. His eyebrows are knitted and his mouth tightens into a thin line. 

The barking from all the dogs around fills the silence as Eddie spends a solid ten or fifteen seconds thinking before he replies, “Ok, you got me there… but he’s still your son! You’re the one who brought him home!”

A hand reaches up to scratch at his head after you roll your eyes and he just rests his head on your shoulder. You all spend a total of 45 minutes there, just enjoying each other's company like you always do and letting Yogi exhaust himself. He sends a video of Yogi play-fighting with a much larger German Shepherd to Uncle Wayne with the caption ‘your grand-nephew’, earning a laugh from both of you when he promptly replies ‘that child is 100% yours’.

The walk home wasn’t too difficult apart from a faint throbbing on the right side of your head - it’s not entirely unusual but it’s still uncomfortable.. You attribute the pain to the sun that was shining in your face for the better part of an hour and possible dehydration so Eddie graciously lends you his sunglasses, seeing as you left yours at home and, in his words, “They look much better on you anyway.” He takes note of your change in behavior, initially seeming very upbeat and talkative, but you get more quiet as the walk goes on. Fifteen minutes and two Excedrin later, you two finally arrive home and Yogi jumps onto the couch for his much-needed afternoon nap. Eddie is hanging up the dog’s leash after opening some of the windows to let in some fresh air. While he’s doing that, you shuffle past him and go into your bedroom and into the top drawer of your bedside table. He hears you moving bottles around until you pull out the large bottle of Advil to pop two blue pills into your mouth followed by a gulp of water. The pain has intensified and spread from beyond the side of your head and down to your forehead. It’s also making you feel lightheaded so you decide it’s best to just lay down for a bit before it gets any worse. You silently approach him from behind, the sound of your slippered feet the only sign of your approach and as you place a light kiss on his cheek. He instinctively turns around to look at you, smiling at first until he gets a good look at your face. He sees one of your eyes has begun to droop and you seem less lively than before, only giving him a forced smile that he has learned to see right through. His hands cradle your face, his own now marred with concern. You break the silence with a strained, “I’m going to go lay down for a while, I’m not feeling good.” Eddie nods in understanding and follows you to the bedroom where you’ve already drawn the blackout curtains shut. 

The first thing you do is change out of your clothes and once you’ve climbed back into bed you take another pill, something much stronger that you tend to reserve for your more intense episodes. Eddie is standing there at the foot of the bed and asks, “Do you want to be alone or do you want me to stay with you?” If this were earlier on in your relationship, Eddie might assume you wanted him there with him because you’d asked him previously, but he learned that sometimes you’d rather be alone while you wait for the attack to subside. It was nothing against him, it was just that you weren’t feeling good and didn’t want him to see you in that state all the time. This time you shake your head no and put your head down on the pillow. You’re suddenly hit with the scent of Eddie, a mix of his sandalwood scented shampoo, his cologne, and even a little bit of his aftershave. It’s the perfect combination of scents that always put you at ease so you scoot closer to his side of the bed to take it all in.

Thirty minutes pass and you aren’t feeling any better. In fact, you’re starting to feel worse. The pain has increased to the point that you’re now hyperventilating and whimpering. The pain is less throbbing and more of a sharp, stabbing sensation. You remember a headache that made you shoot out of bed and almost scream, feeling like someone just took an icepick and shoved it into the front of your head. It lasted maybe 15 seconds but you had never felt pain like that before. Your doctor said you should have gone to the hospital for that, claiming it could have been a possible aneurysm. Well, this migraine was somehow worse than that. Your whimpering soon turned to crying. It’s quiet at first, inaudible to Eddie reading over in the living room with Yogi’s head on his lap. You’re about an hour and a half into the attack where you can no longer take the pain alone and call out, “Eddie?”, but the closed door prevents him from hearing it. You try again, this time louder and trembling, “EDDIE PLEASE I NEED YOU”.

Eddie jumps up out of his place on the couch, accidentally waking the slumbering dog up in the process. His book is abandoned as he rushes into the bedroom and over to your trembling form. Your eyes are wide open with tears. You’re laying on your side in the fetal position, clutching at the bedsheets. Your boyfriend crawls onto the bed so he’s hovering over you. You don’t move your head but at least you make eye contact with him, your voice still quivering and still increasing in volume as you beg him to make the pain stop. Eddie is shushing you and attempting to get you to control your breathing and eventually calm down, but that only turns into you hyperventilating more. The hyperventilating only makes the pain worse which in turn makes you cry again which makes your head throb even more. It’s an endless cycle which neither of you know how to stop. The bed creaks as Eddie moves to partially lay beside you so your eyes meet. He takes one of your hands and squeezes it, cooing, “Sweetpea, you need to calm down. Crying is only going to make it worse.” 

You immediately yell back, “I KNOW!” before groaning and rolling onto your back with your face in your hands. Eddie is dumbfounded. He has never seen you like this before. Hell, in all the time he’s been with you while you had migraines he barely even saw you cry let alone become hysterical.

His thoughts are interrupted by your wavering voice again. “Eddie I can’t feel my leg, why can’t I feel my leg.” His face turns from worried to scared, shooting up right away. He wasn’t a doctor, but that did not sound normal. This was a completely new symptom. Seconds later, you cry out, “Eddie I can’t feel my arm either please help me.” He doesn’t say anything, instead getting up off the bed and rushing to your drawer to grab another pill. He grabs your water and manages to help you take the pill and drink it in hopes that maybe a second pill will do the trick. Eddie watches you and goes over his options in his head. Does he call your mom? She gets migraines too, so maybe she knows what to do. Maybe your neurologist? No, he doubts they’ll be able to do anything. He realizes there’s only one real option, one you’ve turned down every time your migraines get really bad.

“Honey, do you want to go to the hospital?”

You shake your head in between sobs and Eddie immediately takes action. He gets you your sandals, the easiest shoes for him to  get on your feet, and helps you up. You’re wobbling with tears running down your face. As you’re about to leave the bedroom, he briefly lets go of you to rush over to the table next to the front door and grab his sunglasses from before. He places them on you and you thank him with a sniffle. Once you two are steps away from the front door, you hesitate. Eddie looks at you with worry and you say, “I… I don’t have a bra on.” Eddie has to remind you that the doctors don’t care and goes back to helping you move. The two of you make your way out the door as fast as you can go, which isn’t much considering your condition. In a moment of panic, Eddie picks you up in his arms and rushes through the halls of the apartment complex and out to the nearest exit. He’s thanking every god there is that you two managed to snag parking spots so close to the entrance. He yanks the passenger side door open and puts you in and buckles you up. He’s in the driver's seat seconds later and begins haphazardly pulling out of the parking spot and towards the exit. Eddie’s mind is filled with potential scenarios on what's going on. Was this a seizure? Your neurologist had you tested for that last year and nothing came up. What if it’s a stroke? A brain bleed? He’s so distracted by his anxieties and getting to the hospital that he doesn’t notice your breathing start to even out and your posture fix itself. You aren’t crying or hyperventilating at all. About thirty seconds into the drive with the exit in sight, you look up and calmly tell him, “It’s over.”

Eddie slams his foot on the break and goes, “WHAT?” and looks at you with bewilderment. He looks past the sunglasses you’re wearing and sees how you seem to have made a completely full recovery. All the medication you took seems to have kicked in all at once. Your mind is clear and it’s like the attack never even happened. “Wait, so do you still need to go to the hospital?” All you do is shake your head and he lets out a giant sigh of relief, no longer clutching the steering wheel and hangs his head now as he begins to calm down and let himself catch his breath. You both sit there and process everything that just happened. Without a word, Eddie turns the car around and drives back to the parking spot. This time you’re able to get out on your own and meet Eddie at the front of the car. He pulls you in for a tight hug. Muffled by your shirt, he says,

“Never do that again, please. I thought you were dying.”

Your face is buried in his chest, and he only hears ‘mm-hmm’ before you let go of him and take off the sunglasses to look up at him. He’s inspecting your face again. You still don’t look the way you did before the attack but you’ve got more life in your eyes. Your eyelids are still drooping but now you just look tired. 

You rub at your eyes and mumble, “Can we go back inside?”

Eddie nods and wraps his arm around you, letting you lean on him as you two walk back into the building. He clocks how drowsy you’re getting - this is normal, something he sees every time you get a migraine. The two of you return to your apartment without speaking with you, taking the lead upon entry and going back to bed. Eddie follows close behind and this time joins you, holding you close and pressing a kiss to your forehead. He was exhausted by the whole event and fell asleep shortly after you did. The only noise that echoed through the apartment was the sound of his snoring and the snoring coming from Yogi the next room over.

Billy Kid x Reader Headcanons ☆

CW: nothing, maybe a few suggestive jokes but everything is generally SFW :3 i’m super sleepy and writing this at 1am so bare with me when it comes to spelling and grammar :’)

Billy takes a lot of selfies, especially when on missions, and sends them to you. You don’t know what made him start doing this, but you save each and every one of them and you make sure to drop whatever you’re doing to ask him about it.

Billy is on the spectrum. Don’t ask me the logistics of it, yes he’s sophisticated AI, but hear me out! Though you like to indulge in some childhood nostalgia, you aren’t particularly fixated on watching just one media from your childhood. However, one of the medias you watched back in the day is called Starlight Knight. As soon as you told him you enjoyed that show, he would come to you to talk about it. It wasn’t all the time, of course, but whenever conservation went dry (in person or via DMs), he’d make it a thing to talk to you about it for hours. It didn’t annoy you, not in the slightest. It made you happy to see him so happy about the children’s show, and so you entertained it as much as you could.

When Billy texts, he uses old fashioned emoticons as punctuation. Think ‘ :3 , ^_^ , o_O ’ and then replace it everywhere a period, an exclamation point, or a question mark would be. So many emoticons…

Billy loves to play video games, especially at the arcade. He invites you, and usually you tag along. When you can’t, he sends a selfie of him making a sad face. He’d probably captions it something like ‘Missing my pookie.. 💔💔’

On that same note, Billy will pick up on vocabulary you use and steal it. So if you have a habit of saying ‘pookie’ ? That’s his now. He’s using it all the time.

Billy panics easy when it comes to you. not only when it comes to safety, but also when it comes to romantic scenarios. During times you hang out with Anby and Nicole, they spill all the details of how Billy went on a rampage to find the perfect flowers, or how Billy sat in a corner all morning whining about how he didn’t find the right color outfit for you. Things along those lines!

Sortve related, but Billy gets flustered easily. Especially when you make dirty jokes, most of which aren’t really directed at him. He doesn’t get the jokes at first, but when he does understand them, he reacts in such an over the top and dramatic manner. Flailing around, gasping really loud, whining, yknow the works! One time you made a joke about ‘whimpering audios’ and he didn’t understand it. For a while too! Once he asked enough people (Anby explained it to him), he went silent and locked himself in his room for a considerable amount of time. He wasn’t sad or anything, just… shocked.

Billy isn’t human, so he doesn’t necessarily get injured in the traditional sense. One time he came back from a commission with his arm all battered up. You never seen him so down in spirits! You were able to help him, luckily, because it was only one part on his arm that was damaged that really messed up the rest of it. You kissed his hand, and immediately after inspecting your handiwork, he stuck his hand out again. “I dunno.. my arm still feels wonky. How about another kiss for good measure?”

When you’re bored, you love to dress up as Billy. Well, you’re not really dressing like him, you’re just wearing his jacket. You also like to wear the jacket with certain outfits you think it would look best with. Since your boyfriend is so tall and broad in the arms, you mostly wore it as a shoulder drape in an odd anime fashion statement. Regardless, Billy loved to see you wear it.

Earlier I mentioned Billy loves to take selfies, but I forgot to mention how most of them include you, and despite having all of those selfies of himself, half of his camera roll is you. He likes to sneak pictures of you sometimes! It’s one of his more odder behaviors, but he takes such cinematic pictures of you, even when you’re wearing the worst outfits. You didn’t know how he did it, but it’s one of the things that made the random picture taking somewhat okay.

Billy loves hugs. Don’t ask me how it works in terms of comfort. I would assume it’s the equivalent of sleeping in a car. However, Billy does have plenty of plushies thanks to you, and you use those to your advantage… so it’s not all bad :)

You asked Billy to teach you how to sling guns, and the entire tutorial sesh was just him feeling every inch of your body, memorizing and admiring how you looked. He loved you. All of you! He thought he was being sneaky, but you knew (and secretly loved it too).

Billy loves to carry you on his back and walk around. All I’m saying is, he’s got handlebars on that jacket for a reason… this has to be one of them……

Billy loves stickers. Self Explanatory!

Billy loves giving you gifts. He puts your needs over his more than he should, but luckily you’re not in this relationship to take advantage of his immaturity and inexperience. You give back as much as you can.

Billy is clingy. Needed to type it out despite it being loud as hell in this list.

Billy cant cook. Not like he needs to anyways, but he wants to learn for you! So when you’re cooking, he watches close behind you and asks you every question he can think of.

Billy likes to ask why… a lot. It gets frustrating sometimes, but he genuinely wants to learn.

He has some pokemon merch of his own- Not only is he wearing a baseball cap with an embroidered pikachu design on it, but he goes "And wait til you see this-" before lifting up the pant leg of his jeans to show you his pokeball themed socks- This man is just too damn silly..!!

He is just as if not more excited to go than you, and he doesn't wanna be late!

You both get pikachu burgers and share a float topped with whipped cream and a cookie shaped like your favorite pokemon!

(Don't imagine him taking a drink and getting whipped cream on his nose. Don't imagine it because it's too cute and you'll die)

Later, you two get separated at the shop and you sneakily buy him a pikachu plushie keychain. You go to surprise him with it when he reveals that he's bought you the exact same one as a surprise too!!

Anya

... takes you to sailor moon cafe..!

You help Anya get dressed for the cafe! You initially picked out little skirts paired with white sweaters and a colored neck scarf to mimic the look of the sailor uniforms. She loves what you picked, but she decides you should both wear leggings underneath the skirts you picked out... the skirts were very short, oops!

You two decide to share a cheesecake, cookie, and milkshake between you both! (She’s a little worried about your sugar intake, starlight..!)

Anya is more than happy to take pictures of you in front of any cool decoration or with other cosplayers you see!

In fact, she's fangirling quite a bit herself!! I think Anya would love shoujo manga, and probably grew up watching sailor moon!

She would make sure to tell you afterward what a fun day you two had together, and how much she appreciates how much you both have in common!

Daisuke

...takes you to kirby cafe!

He has a surprise- he bought you both matching outfits. So now ur dressed like twins. To go to kirby cafe. You each have a pink shirt with your favorite character on it as well as shoes, shorts, and a kirby themed hat that he bought especially for this occasion.

When you arrive, he assures you you can get anything and everything you want off the menu, he has it covered!! Ok rich boy

He takes lots of photos of you both, taking selfies of you both in front of all the themed decor ~ Like, so many selfies (and tiktoks, he has brainrot)

Buys you more kirby merch than you know what to do with...

He likes teasing you and making you laugh with cute messages, so he sends you memes later of the kirby with a big mouth eating everything in sight and captions it "this is how u look eating that cake today"

Jimmy

...is dragged along to Pompom Purin Cafe!

Look, this is not really his idea of a date... you're lucky you're cute.. and really annoying when you beg

Still, he has an outfit picked out for you- you think it's cute how he lays your outfits out for you before you wake up, ready for you to put on in the morning. Secretly, he likes dressing you up like you're his little doll ♡ This time, he chose something on theme- a yellow dress ! You accessorize with a brown beret.

You two get desserts and drinks at the cafe- a pudding of course and a cake. Jimmy gives you whichever dessert you like more ♡ And you both get drinks with a cute character on them ♡

You explain to him who all the little characters are. He doesn't really get it, but he thinks it's really cute how you're taking photos of everything, you're so excited..!

Well, it's cute until you start taking photos of him (Tbh he doesn't really want evidence that he was there!!) He flat out tells you to delete a pic you took of him with a bit of frosting on his face ♡ (Sorry but that one is a keeper..!!)

I’ve liked Matt for as long as I can remember. And the only person who knows that is Nick. Partially because I told him and partially because he could tell. I mean everyone could tell, right? There were edits of us all over social media shipping us… he had to have known… right?

Wrong.

Matt was the most oblivious person I have ever met in my entire life. You could outright tell him you love him and he still wouldn’t pick up that you have a crush on him.

Matt was my best friend and we told each other everything. Well maybe not everything since I still hadn’t told him about my crush on him.

It was a chilly Friday night in October and I was scrolling through my Instagram feed. I come across a post from a super gorgeous girl that Matt follows with the caption: “The after party”

I didn’t think too much about it, it was just a normal Instagram post. That is, until I came across Matt’s recent post with the caption: “Was on Wilson and 73rd”

The Color Violet by Tory Lanez. One of my favorite songs. Why was he matching captions with this gorgeous girl on Instagram?? Why didn’t he tell me he was talking to someone?? My heart sank into the floor.

“Nick-” I called him, tears slipping out of my eyes on the other side of the phone.

“Hey y/n- what’s wrong??” He could tell by my voice that I was upset.

“Can you just come over?” I replied quickly.

“Let me ask Matt if he can take me. I’ll text you babe.” He ended the call.

I winced a little when Matt’s name left his mouth. Why was I hurting this much? Was this just a crush or something more?

(NICK’s POV):

“Matt! Can you take me to y/n’s house right now? She seems upset and wants me to come over.” I asked Matt.

“Is she okay?? What’s wrong?? What’s going on??” Matt threw way too many questions on me all at once.

“Why the fuck are you questioning so much? With the amount of care you have for her you’d think you were like in love with her or some shit.” I joked.

“Shut the fuck up Nick.” He snapped.

“Woah- Mattitude. You don’t have to get mad, it’s not like you like her or anything.” I stepped back before he could shove me.

“I-” Matt started, but everything clicked in my head.

“WOAHHH WAITTTT DO YOU LIKE HER?” I excitedly raised my voice.

“NICK SHUT UP BRO HOLY FUCK” Matt screamed at me.

“You should tell her.” I giggled.

“Tell her what?” Matt questioned.

“That you like her? What else dumb fuck?” I started grabbing my things.

“Nick it’s not like that- okay maybe it is a little bit but I’m not telling her. Go get in the car.” Matt replied.

I grabbed my stuff and headed towards the car before me and Matt got in and drove to y/n’s.

(Y/N’s POV):

I heard a car pull up and immediately knew it was Nick.

“The front door’s unlocked.” I text him.

After seeing Matt pull off, I hear Nick make his way up the stairs and down the hall to my room.

“What’s wrong? You good?” Nick questioned upon entering my room.

“Dude I literally just saw Matt have a matching Instagram caption with this really really pretty girl and I’m having an anxiety attack which I don’t even know why because it’s not like he even would like me back anyway-” Nick cut me off before I could continue.

“Ok first, breathe exercise, remember? Second, what?” Nick asked, obviously concerned.

I showed him the posts.

“Y/n, babe, her post was an entire day after his was posted. He doesn’t even know her in real life. She probably just copied his caption to make it look like that.” He laughed.

The weight on my chest instantly lifted.

“There is no way I got that worked up over a misunderstanding.” I laughed along with him.

“Also, what makes you think Matt doesn’t like you?” He started interrogating me.

“Girl be for real.” I ran my hands through my hair.

“I am being for real.” He stated.

“He just wouldn’t, I know.” I laughed.

The conversation soon drifted to what our Halloween plans were and what we should do for a Thanksgiving video, ending with Nick leaving my apartment when Laura came to pick him up for a meeting.

That conversation with Nick honestly made me feel relieved, even though it didn’t get rid of my crush on Matt, which I wish would’ve happened.

I had just finished dinner, turned the LED lights in my apartment to a violet color, and pressed play on a Halloween movie when I heard a knock at my door.

“Hey” Matt said breathlessly as I opened the door.

“Matt?” I was so confused.

“Can I come in?” He asked.

“Yeah, of course. It’s chilly out there.” I giggled.

We sat down on the couch before continuing the conversation.

“Y/n I’m gonna get straight to the point. I love you. It’s you. It’s always been you. It always will be. And I know you don’t feel the same but-” I didn’t even let him finished before I spoke.

“Can I kiss you?” The words fell out of my mouth and I was almost embarrassed.

“Please.” Matt responded with a deep breath.

The kiss was passionate and hungry, like we had been parted for years.

His hands made their way to my waist, guiding me closer to him, while my hands roamed his hair.

Breaking away from the kiss, I responded: “I love you too” before tilting my head and deepening it.

After a few minutes, we pulled away and leaned back on the couch.

“Please be my girlfriend.” He begged.

“I thought you’d never ask.” I responded, smiling.

“Wow these purple lights are a really good touch in your apartment.” He laughed.

“Bro I know they’re so cool.” I giggled along with him.

I think I’m gonna keep my LED lights on violet more often.

Asmodeus wiped off the orangey-pink lip gloss. He picked up another lipstick and huffed, "Not one of these is kiss-proof! What false marketing! " He pouted and opened the next color, which was supposed to be a soft pink glitter gloss.

These lipsticks had never been advertised as kiss-proof. Deep down, both of you were aware of that fact. Yet, as his slender fingers gently cradled your face, you could feel the warmth radiating from him. His slim legs draped over your lap, creating an intoxicating closeness that heightened the tension in the air.

He leaned closer, allowing the warmth of his skin to envelop you while the faint scent of his signature fragrance wrapped around the two of you. You could feel the steady rhythm of his heartbeat.

“Then I suppose I’ll keep this one to the side them,” he said playfully, his lips curling into a mischievous grin. The tension danced in the air as your breathing synchronized. Asmos's hand glided down your chest lifting the bottom of your uniform shirt to admire the pact mark.

Asmodeus couldn't help but giggle at the coincidence of your mark manifesting just above your pelvis. To him, it seemed ironic. However, you weren’t laughing at all. Because I have asks in my inbox about the color coding in Pit Babe even though I don't want to watch it, I'm challenging myself with this show and seeing how good my color skills really are. I'm doing my normal thing of watching it double-speed on mute, but now, I'm going to take off the captions.

It's too late to turn them on now, and I refuse to go back and watch these episodes with subs since I'm so mad at Charles, Jeffrey, and Waymond who is doing some strange stuff to Barbara.

"Touring Thavnair"

Happy Art Monday!

I started working on this piece 4 months ago, with the first sketches drawn on May 18th. After letting it sit for 3 months while juggling other projects, I finally picked it back up. The rough sketch was completed on July 22nd, and I work on the linework the next day.

Melody was the first to be inked and colored—it took some time, but I’m proud of how she turned out. Raha came next, and the process was much faster. The background ended up being more work than I anticipated (surprise, surprise! 😅), but I managed to finish it just in time today, with the final touches added minutes ago. I've shared regular updates along the way to give you all a glimpse into my process.

I thoroughly enjoyed creating this piece, even if it deviated slightly from my original vision. Overall, I'm happy with the result. The white traces on the rose dome had me uncertain, but they turned out okay. I know I’ll probably notice imperfections later, but that’s what makes it my art.

I've reflected on how I used to say, “I hope you like it,” in my captions sixteen years ago. But as you may know, I’m not doing that anymore. This is my art—I like it as it is, flaws and all. I enjoyed creating it, and I enjoy sharing it, no matter its imperfections because I can see my growth as an artist in each new piece. So unless you’re a commissioner, I’m not going to ask if you like it. But if you do, and you feel like sharing your thoughts, it would definitely make my day!

Build Up Ep 1, Part 2

Hello! When we left off in my Build Up Recap adventure, we had just finished the first part of episode 1. In this post, we'll get through more of episode 1, and we'll learn why this man is making this face!

Let's do it!

A reminder on the color coding: blue is soul, orange is allround, green is unique, and purple is power.

We just saw Seongjeong the leaping lizard do his amazing intro.

Then of course it’s time for everyone to talk about who looks like who, as seems to happen at the beginning of every variety show like this, and as usual I don’t see most of them.

They say that Choi Suhwan looks like Onestar, and for this one, I guess maybe. (You may remember Onestar from his time as a vocal trainer on various Produce seasons.)

No one talks about how Hyukjin looks like Lee Yedam from Boys Planet/Onepact. (Or is it just me?)

Everyone says that Bitsaeon from M.O.N.T. looks exactly like Code Kunst. He doesn’t really, except that both of them have ears that stick out. Everyone seems to be talking about that, so he introduces himself as someone who wants to be as famous as Code Kunst. 

Just then (at least in the edit), V36 starts to play -- it’s Rose Blossom by H1-Key, as performed by Bitsaeon. (I’d have to assume that the song played first, then he introduced himself by name afterward…?) 

Seunghun from CIX starts dancing along as his new friend Hwanhee tries to place the song.

Everyone seems to like the performance, including me! He sounds great, and Sunghun from CIX interviews that their voices would harmonize well. Jay says, “aju nice!” when it’s done -- I wonder if he recognized it as Bitseon, since they probably know each other.  

Bitseon gets 21 votes, and says he’ll prove himself to those who didn’t pick him. 

Seongjeong the leaping musical actor says to his neighbor Joohee that there are a lot of idols here. That leads into a montage of performances from idol singers, all of whom are wondering, will anyone like my voice? (At least, the caption says they are.)

Donghun interviews that he’s here as a main vocal, and he’s expecting to see many other main vocalists. 

Every time I see Donghun in this episode, between his loosened tie and ill-fitting blazer and tired demeanor, all I can see is a beat cop in a police procedural who's ready to interrogate a subject.

Is it just me?

So, in honor of that, I'm going to call him "Detective Donghun" to remember him. As with all my nicknames, they're done to help us remember who is who and they're laced with love.

Kim Seoyhung says that he can’t sing stylish trendy songs, like the way idols sing. Yoon Inhwan interviews that all the idols sound the same, which is I think is unfair. Hwanhee, in particular, doesn’t sound like the others at all. Inhwan is mostly worried that their voices wouldn’t mix well, and I could say something like “I wonder if anyone’s voice would mix with yours, after you drank that gallon of milk before you sang?” But that would be mean. I try not to be mean, you guys. 

All the idol main vocalists get relatively low scores.

Hwanhee gets 14, Seokhwa gets 15, Donghun gets 18, and Geonu gets 11. I wonder if Hwanhee’s low vote tally is as much to do with his sort of sharp vocal color? I love the way it comes through in Up10tion songs but I could imagine people worrying about his harmonizing. Or maybe they didn’t think he showed enough in his teaser, since he sang a pop song and had backup vocals. 

Meanwhile, Seunghun from CIX is super nervous. 

It seems like he and Hwanhee have struck up a bit of a friendship. Hwanhee asks him if he often gets nervous, and Seunghun is like, I really, really do. Even at the pre-tape meeting, he was shaking. Hwanhee is like, there’s nothing to be nervous about -- you already recorded your teaser, so you can relax, right? (“Plus, we don’t have to dance!” -- Hwanhee, probably) But Seunghun is just a bag of anxiety wearing a brown jacket. 

When the voice says V1 will play, he reacts so strongly that it must be obvious that he is V1. As I said in my intro posts, I don’t think he was super successful in this performance, so I can understand why he’d be nervous. Like, you know you screwed up, and now everyone else is going to know, too. Aww, poor guy. When the song finishes playing, everyone applauds, but few had voted for him -- only 7. At the reveal of this low number, a bunch of the guys cover their mouth in shock.

Park Jeup, he of the powerful pussy bow, said he didn’t understand the low result -- in his opinion, this is a voice that would match with anyone’s. But Hong Seongjun from BDC, he of the white jacket with the mandarin collar, said it was “lacking.” Jay interviews that he didn’t vote for it or even really listen because it was in the ballad style, which wouldn’t match with his style.

Seunghun says, “I haven’t shown 20% of my voice. I will be the vocalist that could match anyone’s voice.” Everyone applauds. Fighting! Taehwan from Vanner says to Bitseon, “It’s a voice that could match with anything,” and Bitseon agrees. That’s sweet. 

Kindly hyung Hwanhee reaches out to touch Seunghun’s shoulder. “Do you feel better now that it’s over?” Seunghun says, “I feel better, but it’s a bummer.” He says he knew that the competition would be tough, but he’s still ashamed of the result. I think he might be fighting back tears. Oh no! Poor guy. I think we’ve all been there -- it’s too late to fix it so you just have to ride it out.

After that, we jump straight to V07.

If you’re just reading the recaps and didn’t necessarily listen to all the teasers, be sure to check this one out. Just try to picture someone who’d be singing it. 

The guys all react the moment it begins to play. 

Inhwan likes it. I think. I guess? Not sure. 

Seunghun likes it. I think. I guess? Not sure. 

Ma Jaekyung (former Romeo) says, “oh, what a nice voice.” Bitsaeon (M.O.N.T.) says, “Wow, this is truly unique.” The vote tally immediately begins to climb. Basically, everyone loves it, even Dahee. Kim Seongjeong, our leaping lizard, says that this person has a monster talent.  Jay says, “He was the one I wanted to work with the most out of all 40 people.” Sunyoul from Up10tion is like, just tell us who it is already!! 

Park Jeup (former IMFACT), with his puissant pussy bow, leans over the red-suited Hyukjin (100%/Fave1) to point out Neon, wearing green. They think it’s him singing. 

Side note: Google translate swears up and down that Park Jeup’s name is “Taxidermy”. Taxidermy is apparently 박제술, andJeup’s name is  박제업. So the first two syllables are the same. That’s unfortunate! 

So, who could it be? Who could be the owner of this interesting voice that won 27 votes, taking over first place…? They expected someone with that voice to be kind of old, but it’s youthful, soft-voiced (when speaking) Kang Hayoon.

He introduces himself with an anacrotic poem with the syllables of his name. “I’ll appeal strongly/ dear god, for me to debut/ please allow me.” Everyone says, “cyooo!” 

Up next is V33, sung by Neon (the one wearing green). It’s Rush Hour. Did he get permission from Jay to sing this? And did he get permission to do what he does next, which is get out of his chair and say things like “make some fucking noise!” making it really clear that he’s the one singing...? It seems at least against the spirit of the rules, if not actually against the letter, but no one is stopping him, so he’s just going to do that.  

A bunch of them get up to dance, including Woong and Sunyoul, both of whom seem ready to have fun here. I enjoy a joiner. 

Choi Haram, in his houndstooth gray and white blazer thing, interviews, “I’m a big introvert, He looked so cool. I was jealous.” I’ll call him introverted Haram. 

Neon introduces himself as an R&B/Soul singer-songwriter. He says he ran around to give them all energy. The running around thing was maybe a mistake, because a few of them say, “oh no, I was too busy dancing to vote!” He only gets 13 votes.  Donghun from ACE would have voted for him, and I think Seokhwa would have too. Neon interviews, “Considering those who forgot to vote out of surprise, I guess I did ok.” 

We find out that Woong from AB6IX has forgotten to vote more than once -- including during Pixar character Jo Hwanji’s audition with Swing My Baby. We see a bit of Woong’s pre-show taping interview, where he is wearing a denim jacket on top of another denim jacket on top of a hoodie. Do they not heat these studios at all or what?

He says, “It’s really hard to be the son of MNET. Right now, I’m the son of Rhymer from Brand New Music.” (AB6IX is under Brand New Music, and Rhymer is the founder.)  “But I’m open to anything. I love you, boss MNET!” 

So, how did Woong do with his singing? Let’s find out! 

He’s V11. The on screen caption says “Unique and captivating voice,” and as you know if you read my episode 0 guides, I like his singing, though I’m not quite sure how trained he is. It just sounds good. Bitsaeon points out that V11 (Woong) does well with the rhythm, and that’s true, he definitely does. As Woong dances along to his own singing, everyone is voting for him. Lee Gwangseok says, “That was outstanding.” And getting a bit of Woong’s personality along with the voice definitely makes the performance… well… sing.

Even though everyone seemed to enjoy the performance, Woong only gets 14 votes, but he stays cheerful. Woong says, “the result is different form the response. I’m still happy with the result. I’ll seize my chance and become the son of MNET. Fighting!”

Most of the guys laugh and clap for Woong’s enthusiasm, but Hong Seungjun is a bit more serious. 

His group, BDC, was also from Brand New Music, but basically disbanded in August of 2023. BDC even went on Peak Time to try to stir up some interest first, but the group was eliminated in the first round. Basically, Seungjun has had a tough road and it makes sense that he might be a little, I don’t know... maybe "bitter" is too harsh a word, but I think you know what I mean. Like, he’s been through it. And it must be extra galling that AB6IX is doing comparatively well, being from the same agency and all that. 

Seungjun voiceovers, “I thought it was odd. They’re still performing and doing pretty well. I’m wondering, what are they doing here? Especially Yeo One-sunbaenim from Pentagon.”

As if in response, Yeo One interviews, “I’ve been in this filed for a long time. I got 10 seconds, max 20 seconds in each song. I always had the third to sing for 10 years that can never be quenched. I’m here because I want to sing. I’m here to sing. I want people to watch me singing. That’s all I want.”

Then V40 plays -- it’s Yeo One. People seem to be enjoying it, and the vote tally creeps up. They like his expressiveness, which I can understand. Bitsaeon from MONT says, “I want to listen to that before I go to bed.” Personally, I put on a Jenny Nicholson video. Is that weird? Probably. Anyway, Yeo One gets 22 votes, which is pretty good. “I’m happy that people listened to me singing,” he interviews. Ok, Yeo One, we get it, sweetie. 

Little Kang Hayoon is still in first place, and Seunghun from CIX is in last. Dahee asks Hayoon if he thinks he’ll stay in first place, and Hayoon is like, “Didn’t even cross my mind.” 

But now it’s time for… V19. Will Hayoon be deposed? A rough, sweet, textured voice fills the studio. Everyone interviews things like “How can anyone even sing that well?” “It was such a deep voice. I was so surprised by it.” The vote tally is over the top -- it’s 32, leaving Hayoon in the dust. “It kind of poked my heart,” Hayoon says, of falling to second place. And whose voice is it? It’s Lee Gwangseok, the guy in the leather jacket. 

It seems unfair to everyone that such a tall, good looking guy (his normal job is to be a model!) with no training at all can just sing like that.Well, that’s how it be, sometimes, I guess! Sunyoul from Up10tion interviews, “The world is messed up!” and laughs. 

“I never majored in singing or learned it before,” Gwangseok says. I just was hoping I’d get more than 5 votes. I’m grateful they liked my voice. As someone who dreamed of becoming a singer, I’m glad.” 

No one wants to follow that, but Jeup feels like it’s going to be him. We hear from a few of the contestants, including Hwanhee from Up10tion, that the “guy in red” (Hyukjin) and “the guy in the ribbon” (Jeup) are ones to watch. Sunyoul says that Jeup is a “monstrous vocalist”, that he’s so good that it’s like he’s cheating.

We get to hear some of V34, ie, Jeup. It is some serious technique on display. Everyone seems to respect what they heard, saying that it deserves a standing ovation and stuff like that. But the vote tally doesn’t quite reflect that. He gets only 28 votes, putting him in second place. Some of them find if very strange, including Jay and Hwang Inhyuk. 

Geonu from Just B and Sunyoul from Up10tion both interview that they’re hesitant to team up with someone so good. “Because he’s so good, I want to work with him,” Sunyoul says, laughing, “but at the same time, because he’s so good, I don’t want to work with him.”

I can’t understand how on earth Kim Minseo was rated so low. I also think that Lee Minwook and Bain were much lower than they should have been. The fact that Yoon Inhwan ranked as high as he did is surprising to me -- for me, it was one of the worst performances of the teasers. I guess the guys and I have different taste in singers. 

After the reveal of the rankings, we hear from a few of the guys about how they felt. We hear from Lim Junhyuk and Seunghun about how they feel about being ranked so low, but we don't hear from Intae, despite him coming in last. Ah, MNET. I didn't even have time to miss you.

Dahee announces the next mission: The “Prefour” mission. Bain says, in English, “What’s that?” (He’s sitting next to Jay and using it as an opportunity to practice his English.) It’s where they make groups of four and perform one of these songs.

And you’re sitting there saying to yourself “TOMBOY AGAIN?!” but no, it’s a different Tomboy.

It’s is a good reminder that for Koreans living in Korea, kpop is just part of their musical sphere of influence, along with ballads, trot, and other genres. Often enough on Korean top 40s you’ll see very popular ballads, mixed in with the kpop. I think some Western listeners also like some ballads, but I think most of us aren't as interested in them, so we can easily forget how important they are in Korea.

To be clear, I differentiate between a song that is slow and an actual k-ballad. I just don't like 99% of k-ballads. The arrangements are usually straightforward and they’re played on vibraphones with cheesy percussion. Also, the style of singing is just not my favorite. and are always delivered in the most overwrought singing style ever, with way too much vibrato. It can border on operettic but a lot more nasal. I am not saying, for example, that the singing in the original of “Shall I Love You Again?” linked above is bad. I just saying that it’s really not to my taste. But meanwhile, if you watch the clip, the audience is so into it. They’re like, in tears. So who am I to say that it's bad?  This is a genre of music that just isn't for me. I will have to do my best going through this show.

Anyway, everyone’s a bit intimidated by the songs, many of which seme to be well respected classics. Detective Donghun from A.C.E. wonders out loud who would be able to sing Ditto because it has so much English in it. That must be a real issue for idols these days. Ditto is at least 50%, maybe 60%, English.

Speaking of English, my love Bain is speaking it still. When the guys find out that they get to pick the songs they want to do based on the ranking they got in the first round,  Bain says, in English: “I wanna go home!”.

Dahee explains that though the song is a group challenge, they’ll be evaluated individually. A “top tier” contestant will be chosen from each group and will get a benefit. The lower ranked trainees are spurred to promise to try even harder. 

We see a super brief clip of the guys running in all directions to choose the song they want -- I’m assuming we’ll see more of this later -- before we jump to… some time later.

Drinky drinks of the week!

I loved drinks and I wanted to try and build on the previous style from the soda pop girl. I really liked how the drink came out there too thus a further exploration.

References were used for each drink, most of them my own photos. To help me exaggerate and to make the drinks more vibrant when I start to color I would saturate the photo so that those colors then become my base. No color-picking was done in order to practice colors better. The colors in the illustration are still pushed a bit more so that it has more contrast within itself.

e.g.

The frame design was added to make the background less boring but I had no aim in really making them detailed. Despite being low effort, it is something I am interested in trying out again but with more purpose. I wonder if drawing intricate frame embellishments has been around for a long time. I wonder who or what are some possible inspirations for this.

Overall, I like how they look however I can't quite imagine where these could be applied easily. Is it for editorial, is it for merch, or is it for entertainment? Is there a story, a use, or a form of entertainment in the illustration itself? I'm not sure but I might have relied on the caption for their stories too much.

I'm still glad to have gone through this process because how else can you learn? Also, just proud of myself for completing some sort of consistency for a bit. Hehe

2025 reading journal set-up ✨

i've decided to keep a digital reading journal for next year because i've watched a ton of videos of booktubers keeping pretty journals with lovely spreads and trackers and i wanted to do it myself! i'm keeping it digital because i have terrible handwriting and because i'm very nitpicky about how things are decorated so a digital medium gives me as much freedom to tweak things as i want. i thought i'd walk through all of the set-up spreads i've made so far because i'm just really proud of them!

first up is my cover page, which i guess i don't really need since this is a digital journal, but i wanted to make one anyway just for aesthetics!! i put in a little quote for deco and added in my rating system just for posterity. i really love this spread, it might be my favorite of the whole lot!

here's my series tracker! kept this one simple so i could have room to add more i might want to include as the year goes on, and i limited myself to series i know for SURE i'm going to finish, not ones i'm only considering finishing. i only left off one series because it's long and the reading order is a bit confusing (the Nine Worlds by Victoria Goddard) but this is what i'm working with!

my anticipated releases spread! not too many books here and they're almost all parts of the series listed in my tracker because i don't normally fully anticipate books i don't know if i'll like. the only exception is Sunrise on the Reaping because OBVIOUSLY i'm reading that lol. i left some stickers at the bottom that i can easily delete if i want to add new ones as the year goes on and more books get announced.

monthly favorites spread! this one is definitely my most simple and yet somehow my most elegant design? i just really like what i did with this one. the colors, the borders, the font, i really like it all! i'm just planning on putting pics of book covers here, maybe captions if the title is hard to make out in the pic.

tried to keep my Books Read spread as compact as possible to leave as much room as i could, because i'm for sure going to have to make at least another page after this one to be able to list all the books i read, maybe even more after that. truly depends on length of the titles i pick up. again, not much deco so i can have as much room as possible.

purely an aesthetic spread to demarcate my tracker/stats spreads and my individual book spreads, which i obviously don't have any to put in yet. i just thought it'd be a cool little marker to separate sections! i might make another one at the end of the year to bookend the section before my last two stats pages.

someone else did this spread and i just HAD to make one of my own. i saw the words 'DNF Graveyard' and knew it was a wonderful opportunity to make a little halloween/spooky-themed spread. kept it simple and left a lot of room because, while i don't DNF too often (because i try not to read books i don't think i'll have a strong chance of liking at least enough to finish), i'm planning to just put in pics of book covers here.

and my end-of-year stats spread! this one's pretty customizable since i've seen plenty of people do it but i only included the stats i, myself, would personally be interested in. storygraph generates all this info for you so i'm planning to just plug it in at the end of the year!

and that's a wrap for that! i plan on making individual spreads for each book i read if i can (i already made a test one with my last read and it was super fun so i hope i can do many more) and i'll probably post them here when i finish them! for anyone interested, i'm making this on canva using presentation mode! you could probably make it on any of the other modes, i just like the wide space a presentation gave and how easy it is to flip through the pages. can't wait to start using this for real next year!

Making a Home 🌻

I’ve been thinking about this ever since I put this caption together, so why not! Omori queer analysis time.

Now, most analysis of Omori subtext comes from the Headspace sections, and understandably so! Since it takes place in Sunny’s mind, nearly anything can be read into, because everything must serve some function within the world. Within Faraway Town — not so much! Sunny doesn’t seem to have much agency.

Except… That’s not exactly true, is it? There are over twenty sidequests, and therefore at least twenty ways Sunny makes a difference in Faraway Town before moving away, to lesser or greater extents. This can be seen most readily in Universally Loved runs, when he wakes up in his hospital room brimming with flowers from those he’s helped along the way:

Today I want to talk about the Picking Paint and Cooking sidequests. The detail that first brought this to my attention was the wallpaper selection.

It begins on 3 Days Left in Fix-It, where a newly-wed couple is struggling to choose a paint color for their new house, insisting the other one choose. It’s very cutesy and over-the-top, with custom animations showing them blowing kisses to each other.

Eventually, Sean & Karen ask Sunny to choose a paint swatch randomly, and he does so with his eyes closed, but ends up accidentally choosing a floral wallpaper sample instead.

When you visit them later, they actually have the wallpaper up throughout the entirety of the house, which is in the pink swatch, one of two on showcase in Fix-it. The other is… you guessed it! The wallpaper from Basil’s house.

If you go outside into the garden area directly after this, you’ll also be able to see Basil as a memory vision, as well as the flower Sean & Karen gift to Sunny should we finish this sidequest.

(Note: Despite my best efforts, I couldn't determine exactly what kind of flower this was meant to depict, if anything specific).

As you may guess, my proposal here is that even with his eyes closed, Sunny has an instinctual draw to Basil, and things Basil likes. I don’t mean this in a literal psychic sense, but in more of a symbolic way — perhaps even implying that Sunny understands his feelings better on a subconscious level, when he’s not actively looking at them.

Now this is somewhat shoddy evidence on its own, so let’s keep digging.

The reason this stuck out to me is because flowers are usually mentioned in Omori in tandem with Basil. So much so Basil & Flowers might as well be synonymous (and according to the names of the beta characters, once were!)

Obviously, Basil is associated with his flower garden in Headspace, and particularly Stranger's line comparing Sunny to white tulips on the path to Basil's house is often interpreted as having romantic undertones. There's even other official art based off of this line, where if you look very closely at the base of the tulip, it reads: "143. I love you, I love you, I love you".

But even within the main cast's dialogue, flowers are mentioned about 50 times, with 65% of these mentions being spoken by or related to Basil in some way. Many of Mari’s are about the flower puzzle sidequest – which is arguably also related to Basil, as it is initiated by a character named Daisy, and the only Headspace sidequest you can activate while Basil is in your party (not my original observation: read more about that here!)

The majority of Hero’s mentions are about buying flowers for his mother in the main plot. Disregarding these exceptions, it brings the Basil-flower correlation up to 95%!

Sean & Karen then invite us to their housewarming party. They explain they have recently moved in together, but that both of them are from Faraway Town.

We know this to be true, because this pair actually has Headspace counterparts, implying Sunny would have known them from years before.

Enter: Shawn & Ren!

Similar to Daisy, you can find these two at the playground, and they’re some of the only Headspace NPCs you can interact with while Basil is still in your party.

Throughout the game, they are always found next to each other, and they are even some of the only characters in the game to have a shared dialogue box. It’s not just Shawn and Ren, it’s Shawn and Ren.

Clearly, these two have always been close enough in real life for Sunny to make this observation and consider them a matching pair, even though they’re only now moving in together nearly four years later. In my interpretation, I consider them childhood sweethearts.

Coincidentally, they also give Omori the Observe skill. This skill is granted after laying down to stargaze with them. Recently, an acquaintance of mine mentioned they thought these two had similarities to the legend of Tanabata, or Star Festival. The story of Tanabata is about a pair of star-crossed lovers — a Weaver Princess and a Cow Herder.

Ren doesn’t seem to have much in common physically with the Weaver Princess, other than wearing a Japanese-inspired outfit similar to Mari’s, but Shawn distinctly has horns and ears attached to the sides of his head. While the wiki lists these as goat features, I think they’re much more reminiscent of a cow, with horns that grow out in a crescent shape rather than curving straight up and back.

There’s not much else to go off of, but considering Omori notably uses other Japanese folklore as inspiration for Headspace characters, it’s also not an impossible stretch. We don’t know why Shawn and Ren might have been considered star-crossed (or perhaps that’s a romantic daydream Sunny came up with himself!), but there are very notable reasons Sunny & Basil might be, including being the same sex in a small town in the 1990’s, and the complexities of their history together.

Shawn & Ren can also be found in the lobby area of the Last Resort. They’re noticeably on screen during the sequence in which Aubrey and Kel create the Bad Drawing of Basil in an attempt to continue the search for him.

That’s the last of Shawn & Ren’s appearances in the final release of Omori, but it’s also worth noting that these characters existed even in the early concept art of Headspace:

This shows to me that they have significance beyond the "random NPC made to fill out Headspace". In the 2018 Demo, there also existed sprites of Shawn & Ren that didn’t make it into the final game:

Notably, they’re depicted holding a jump rope between them. Presumably, this was removed to censor certain allusions to The Truth too early, similar to the Noose Room being removed, or the first half of Basil’s VHS tape, etc. The jump rope here is purple, like all of the jump ropes in the final game, probably to not stick out against the Headspace landscape. However, the jump rope in early Omori art was bright red:

We know that Sunny & Basil are described as being “tied together by a string of fate”. Of course, the true “string”, or I should say “rope”, that ties them together is The Truth, as they are the only two who know, and are irreparably changed because of it.

The “red string of fate” comes from Chinese mythology and typically describes soulmates. I’m certainly not the first to make the connection between the jump rope and the red string of fate, as lots of popular fanart can attest to.

But wait — are they star-crossed lovers then, or are they soulmates? Aren’t these two concepts opposites? One describes a couple who is destined to be true to each other for eternity, and one describes a couple whose future together has been impeded by the stars themselves.

Well, I submit my theory: Sunny & Basil are star-crossed soulmates. They can’t exist without each other, because they’re the only two in the world who truly understand each other, but they can’t exist together, because of the traumatic and delicate nature of their history.

Finally, we come back to Faraway Town and the second sidequest involving Sean & Karen. We show up to their homecoming party a little earlier than invited on One Day Left, and now we have Hero and Aubrey tagging along. (I definitely recommend this sidequest if you haven’t done it yourself already, as it is very heartfelt!)

In the cooking portion, the four of them all divvy up tasks like they presumably used to when they were friends — except one of the group is missing. Well… two actually. And seeing them all back together like this, Basil’s absence is even more apparent:

Later in the evening, we return for the party, and Karen welcomes us in:

It’s a housewarming party, so her dialogue requesting we “make ourselves at home” only makes sense here… but there’s someone else who has said this to us before...

In fact, there's someone else who is repeatedly associated with the word “home” in Omori...

The last one even explicitly refers to Basil’s “flowers back at home”, bringing us full circle.

Sean & Karen bought a house together, but until they added the final, floral touch (with Sunny’s help!), it wasn’t a home.

Sunny’s home is wherever Basil is.

In conclusion: Sunny choosing floral wallpaper is an intentional thematic choice, and Sean & Karen’s relationship not only embodies the typical childhood sweethearts love story to contrast Sunny & Basil’s more complex relationship, but also represents the overwhelming affection for Basil that Sunny doesn’t know how to express or even acknowledge.

And also they definitely move in together post-canon.

Photographer Research: William Eggleston

William Eggleston's Guide by John Szarkowski, Museum of Modern Art (New York), 1976

The Book, William Eggleston's Guide by John Szarkowski is a photo book published by the Museum of Modern Art in New York and depicts the photographs of photographer William Eggleston. William Eggleston was born on July 27th, 1939 in Memphis Tennessee and is currently 84 years old. Eggleston first picked up a camera when he was in college. Though he did not end up finishing said degree, his interest in photography began to spark. Eggleston began first photographing in black and white, and later in color. His subjects tended to be mundane everyday things in his hometown, which would become what he is famous for today. Despite not having captions for the names of the photographs in the book, I absolutely adored the way it was arranged. Eggleston's pieces are incredibly aesthetically pleasing to view and the way they were arranged helped really bring the color of each photograph out. I especially chose the images above because I love to dabble a lot in color. Despite being more of an artist in the pen and paper sense instead of a photographer, the way he captures color and how it harmonizes in every photo he takes is incredibly admirable. For the first image, with the flowers covering the truck, I love how contrasting the colors are from the warm purples to the cooler blue of the truck which makes it pop out in the more warm background. His way of understanding color and being able to make it pop through photography is something I wish to do and apply to my own art. He knows his color theory incredibly well, and he knows where to seek it in his photographs.
