14. Aesthetic: An ancient mansion high on a lonely heath that you found after travelling through a deep, twisting, peaceful forest. Candles are lit in the ancient windows. The doors are open, warm light spilling forth. You see eyes watching you from the bushes, but you do not feel afraid; only curious.

Also known as the Lord of the Rings meets plaguecore meets couture fashion meets Tim Burton. It's a hard thing to describe lmao (which is why I curate an aesthetic blog)

15. Favorite animal noise: I have very distinct memories of being in a monastery outside of Galway and hearing a unique combination of lovely birdcalls and the absolutely riotous screaming of sheep. That's my fave.

What is the appeal of having custom furbies? Are they just fun to make/look at? I’m asking bc I wanna make a long furby and I wanna know what other ppl do with their furbies once they have them

i enjoy painting things in my life, and furbies weren’t an exception. i love using customizing time as another form of bonding. picking out a personality for the furby and painting them accordingly. i also like having my furbies recognizable, to lower the chance of my images being stolen or lost without credit, there’s more of a chance someone will recognize them and be like “hey, i know who that furb belongs too” but i guess that’s more of a bonus than a reasoning.

regarding the personality thing i mentioned, an example would be that pretzel is a soft girl who loves flowers and sunshine so i painted sunflowers on her to match that personality. yellow is my favourite colour because it calms me down and makes me feel happy so i dyed some parts of her yellow.

for other modifications, like plushifying her, it’s just my personal preference to make it easier to take her to school, therapy or with me when i travel (i travel quite a bit)

overall, custom furbies just make me happy and it’s just super fun and rewarding for me.

Hey, sorry to ask but, I want to 'like'/own a furby, can't cant because of past experiences. (spooky stories as a child, intense spooking from family members) And i know it's all fake, but theres always 1 part of my mind thats like "but what if it is" And i really want to stop that. any tips?

hey it’s okay! if ur gonna get advice anywhere it makes complete sense to talk to ppl in the furby fandom. i’m sorry your family went so hard on convincing you furbys were scary. since i was a kid i’ve had really strong feelings about adults or older kids that do this to little ones, and i think it’s very mean and unfair. you and so many others share this experience, so it’s clear what you say to young people matters and you’re setting them up for unnecessary stress by giving them irrational fears. i hope one day you will finally feel at ease around furbs, but until then it is totally okay to take your time and work through your own process.i don’t have much, but i have two approaches. i hope one of them (or even a combination) might help you over time.

1.) The Realistic Approach: This is all about continuing what you’ve already been doing. Sometimes ppl have this idea that one can “snap out of” an intense fear or a phobia, but that is by and large untrue. Fear is complicated, and rooted deep. Ppl can be deathly terrified of something and not even have an explanation why, making it harder to identify the root and cope with the fear. In your case, you have the advantage of knowing exactly why you have these feelings about furbys, and in addition, you know it’s not your fault or own doing. Remind yourself that your family members were having “fun” at your own expense. They don’t deserve the satisfaction of your fear. What you deserve is to be able to like things and experience things on your own accord. Furbys are toys, and they are electronic ones. All of their glitches and quirks can easily (and most have!) been explained away. I’m not sure what your family told you specifically to instill this fear in you, but one of the most common complaints I’ve come across is the “they come alive in the middle of the night with no batteries” thing. It makes sense that this would startle ppl, esp small kids. But instead of stoking the scary fires, these kids should have been given an explanation and a small robotics lesson. If anything these are missed opportunities to encourage a child who could take a strong interest in tech and design and dumping an irrational fear on them. Electronics in general can store small bits of energy, and through either a trigger such as sudden movement or the passage of enough time can allow for that stored energy to travel through the electronic and “turn it on” for a brief moment. If you ever work your way up to getting a furby and in the rare event that this occurs, try to remind yourself of that. The same goes for more common glitches like funky garbled audio- the furb has sustained damage or wasn’t put together properly.

2.) The Fantastical Approach: This is all about using your imagination to free you from the constraints of your fear. There are far more possibilities than what I’ll be mentioning here, so please feel free to come up with your own tactics if none of these jive for ya. Personally, as a child, my family did very extreme and mean things to scare me. One of these things was the classic ~there’s somehow a monster that’s terrifying and cruel but it will only come for children ooo~ (if this doesn’t sound too bad, know that i am omitting a lot of very gross and borderline abusive details bc this blog is meant to be a safer space). However… it didn’t really work on me. I would hope and wish and pray for a monster to take me away. I felt that a monster would understand me far more than my own family. Or, how cool would it be to have a friend that only you can see? The way I rationalized it, monsters are incredibly powerful- they can do almost anything they want (except walk around in the sunshine i guess lol). So a monster is a magical, mythical thing. If a monster approaches you, it means you’re special and interesting. This magical creature that generally holds humans in disdain- or at least, at a distance- wants to get to know and befriend you! The way I saw it as a kid and still do, is, how is the boogeyman that much different from a unicorn. And because of my experiences and inclinations, the answer for me is that they’re not different at all. Magic is magic, it just comes in different flavors. How could you spin this for yourself personally? Well, maybe furbys never “chose” your relatives. Perhaps they had some around the house, but how well did they treat their furbs? You might have been a tender child, an “easy target”. You might have been a caring, considerate, meticulous child. If these qualities were/are true of you, furbys would take very kindly to you. In fact, I know any furby in the world would be so proud of you for wanting to work through this, and I know they would understand the fear isn’t your fault. I bet a furby would choose you, because you seem like a sweet and patient and thoughtful person. Maybe your family was jealous, their furbys would turn on as they are meant to do but no special connection could be formed. If you were to have been able to get close to a furby, your relationship may have been very special. In a way, you could think of working through this as getting back to something you’ve always deserved, even if it is just a bit of fun and comfort!

At the end of the day, if this is something you can’t shake, that’s okay. It’s okay to be afraid of things, and as eager to jump to chastising as some ppl can be about this, it is okay to have irrational fears. Irrational doesn’t mean invalid, because having ppl pound an idea into your head when you are very young is plunging that fear into a mind at its most open state, when you are learning so much about existing in the world, right and wrong, caution and risk, payoff and reward. Your fear of furbys won’t get in your way in general, and you can obviously have a completely happy life without ever ridding yourself of this fear. I can only hope this offers you something, at the very least I hope I gave you a safe and wide space to air out your feelings. Thank you for trusting us with this, and I’m genuinely so proud of you for trying to work through it all!

If you do attain your goal, however, know that there is a furby out there who can’t wait to finally meet you. They’ve been so patient, rooting you on from wherever they are, believing in you and knowing you’re a worthwhile person to know and love.

Time Period Quick Reference:

Courtesy the lovely Erin (@incre-et-painture) we now have a handy-dandy little reference to help us all “flow with the times” without having to struggle between either spending precious time researching or winging it and hoping for the best! She actually lived in England during the period in which our game is set, so if you have additional questions about the setting she’ll be happy to help you out--

Although keep in mind that this is an alternate universe. As such, specific individual facts and historical events may be different. So don’t worry about getting bogged-down in the details; after all, this is a world in which The Cold War was replaced by The Worldwide Witchunt Wars. There probably was no Cuban Missile Crisis; there may not have even been a Space Race! We’ve left particular historical details vague enough that we can tailor them to suit whatever plot-points we all decide to develop.

So just as with the timeline, view the following as a reference guideline, not a checklist to obey!

Technology:

This is probably the most important one for us, as unlike most Potterverse games we’re actually playing in a world where your character very well might have access to the sort of technology that we take for granted in our current lives -- albeit several generations older than what we’ve got on hand now!

Most computers operate using ethernet cords to connect to the internet, laptops weigh an extremely portable 52 pounds, basically, and camera phones are cutting edge technology. The pictures taken with them are notoriously grainy at this stage and definitely not the crystal clear video we’re used to.

Most mobile phones operate on a “top up” method where you pay for minutes. They’re called track phones in the U.K. Also, most people are paying per text message sent, but it’s still a popular method of communication. You can top up your minutes in most convenience stores and by calling into your provider’s number. There aren’t any smartphones, apps, and other things like that. Public payphones still exist, although they are fading out by this point.

Travel is done by taxi, bus, and tube. Lyft and Uber do not exist. Londoners love the Tube and definitely travel that way frequently. For frequent travelers, Oyster cards are refillable cards that are similar to the Metro cards we use in the US. In fact, 2004 was the first year that Oyster cards existed. They can also be used on the bus and train, but not on taxis.

Please also remember that trains are a popular method of travel for Europeans. They’re also very reliable and a great way to get around. (As for whether people would be comfortable sharing a carriage with someone who’s got stars by their eyes, well...)

Pop Culture: Sport

As much as it breaks my heart, Manchester United won the FA cup in 2004. (Mod Note: her Erin, maybe in this messed-up world West Ham isn’t a total lost cause? I mean, sport doesn’t have to have happened the same as it did in reality, and we’ve got so many crazy things going on here already -- wealthy Weasleys, werewolf-friendly Blacks, a living Regulus...stranger things could happen, right?)

For those of you interested in talking football, here are the league tables for that season. Please keep in mind that different teams are in different leagues so, if your character follows a team, make sure you know who they play. :)

Now again, we are living in an alternate reality here, so feel free to make up other songs and singers and groups -- both mundane and magical; maybe the Weird Sisters and Celestina Warbeck don’t exist here (and maybe they do) but there are surely still some magical musicians (maybe some taking advantage of the “dangerous” aura their magic grants them, while others might try and downplay it) so please, let your imaginations run wild! Random Stuff:

Since the standard closing time for a pub is 11 PM, that’s when “Needles” closes. There are after-hours nightclubs, and people probably go to them, but Needles does its last call at 10:45.

Prostitution is not illegal in Britain, but running a brothel is. Basically, a person can sell themselves, but you can’t sell other people. (I just feel like this is useful information.)

Gun Control Laws had banned both automatic and semi-automatic weapons. Rifles were still allowed for those with hunting permits.

Courtesy Millie @theinvisibleboi: 2004 is also the year Facebook launched (although at that point it would have still been restricted to school e-mail accounts) and the Olympics were held in Athens, in case anyone wanted to feel old! (Probably wix would not be allowed to compete...but if anyone wants to create some kind of controversial Olympics history or event for this world, or otherwise alter history to conform to to AU, please feel free!)

Alrighty, I’ve been very lazy on my weeks off, catching up on TV shows rather than writing anything, my bad (Poldark is wonderful, a must-watch of beautiful Cornwall). Anyway, let’s move right along! This will be a short entry, we didn’t get up to too much on this day, our main travelling day.

DAY FIFTEEN: Today is the day of driving. Approximately 12 hours in the coach, with a couple of stops along the way to reach our final destination, Tangier. Our first stop of the day was Casablanca for lunch. Don’t get too excited. We went to a McDonalds on the waterfront. There was wifi and junk food, so we were all pretty okay with this. There really wasn’t a whole lot to do here, so it was literally just a lunch stop.

After this, we were off to our next stop up the coast, Rabat, the political centre of Morocco. We hopped off the coach to explore the Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V. I honestly can’t get over the architecture of this country. The Mausoleum is a beautiful white structure with a green tiled roof (the colour of Islam). The inside is just stunning. They really know how to do a good Mausoleum in this country. I am completely enamoured with the ceiling. The photos really don’t do it justice.

Across from the Mausoleum was the Tower of Hassan. Unfortunately for us, it was having a bit of a re-furb, so we couldn’t really see a lot of it…okay, we couldn’t really see any of it. Just looks like a building block in the middle of tiny pillars. Some of the pillars are actually quite big!

Don’t ask us why but Christina and I decided you know what, they deserve a big old hug.

Meanwhile some of the guys decided it was a fun idea to scale them!

Can’t you feel the excitement.

Onwards and upwards yet again. We played a game on the coach on this part of the drive, its time for dress-ups! We were put into teams and had to dress up one of the team members with whatever we had on hand. We would then have a fashion parade up and down the coach with (I think anyway) Areti deciding on the victor. Adrian got stuck on the girls team so we decided he would be our model. I was ready and whipped off the bra (thank-you Logan for noticing it was the new one I bought on one of our shopping outings).

To say it was an interesting way to pass the time on a long drive day is an understatement. I honestly don’t remember who won – maybe the travel-pillow Geisha inspired outfit that Lionel wore? I dunno, but it was a whole lot of fun.

As we drove up the coast in the late afternoon, the shoreline to our left, we stopped at a beachfront for some fun in the setting sun and for some camel rides along the beach.

I opted out of the camel ride, preferring to play in the refreshingly freezing waves.

I remember seeing people riding 4 wheelers up the dunes and even though it looked like the most unsafe thing in the world, I REALLY wanted to do it. Who doesn’t love going fast and being reckless :P Unfortunately, we didn’t have the time (and I didn’t have the money for it this time. It was back to the coach and onto the city of Tangier.

I wish i had taken photos along the way, but I just watched them instead. Along the drive, families emerged with tables, chairs, tablecloths, food and drink, watching the sun set for the moment they could break their fast for Ramadan for another day. Kids were running around, adults were chilling out, chatting and relaxing after another scorcher of a day. It was such a peaceful, lovely scene. I could’ve watched them for hours. In a completely non-creeper way of course!

Tangier felt like a city barely waking up when we finally arrived. I do remember Logan and I going for a walk to check things out and really not finding very much before we headed back to the hotel. Dinner was in the hotel, I don’t remember what it was, but it was food. The evening is a blur. I’m assuming we had a good time!

It was our last evening in Morocco and we had to be up early the next day, bags to coach at 6.30am to catch our ferry back to Spain, via Gibraltar.

(I know this was a bit of a bore of an entry, apologies! The next one will be better :P)
