as the sports nerd to end all sports nerds, ive aways found it fascinating what “home” is to each sport. in football, its the stadium; old trafford, camp nou, anfield. home is your field where they chant your name and sing songs daily. where you have laughed and wept and won and lost. but its not that for hockey. for hockey, and basketball and the nfl, its the city they play in; chicago, montreal, cleveland, pittsburgh. its about bringing glory back to the very city itself. and for f1, your home is your team. your engineers, designers, mechanics. tp, teammate, race engineer. think of how leclerc bleeds for ferrari, how hamilton built mercedes with his own two hands, how norris will always run papaya and max will always be redbull’s demon.

I think when you’re in a fandom like that of the national basketball association, it’s very important to be cognizant of unconscious/underlying racism in your ship dynamics. I’m glad people on here have been talking about it and calling it out bc frankly it’s always bugged me

I’ve noticed this working in basketball media too, like there have been so many times where someone I edit (white) has referred to a Black player as aggressive/dominant in a way they don’t talk about white players or even talked about people being scared of a Black player, usually a big man like Draymond or Joel Embiid.

It ABSOLUTELY has to do with the top/bottom stuff @jrueships has been talking about (those are two separate links btw and I implore you to read both) and I’m glad we’re talking about it! I’m so tired of seeing “big aggressive Black man tops small gentle white or lightskin man” bc not only is it #weird it’s played out. And like… you can’t tell me Joel Embiid is a top. In 99% of scenarios that boy is a BOTTOM. Anyway back to the matter at hand

I’m white so you shouldn’t be listening to me above Black nbaposters! but like for other white/non-Black friends on here you have to put in the work and realize where you stand in certain discourse/discussion. it’s just a good thing to do both for fandom reasons and for real life reasons

And I’m not saying you can’t have Ant topping Luka or whatever but you have to think about harmful stereotypes you might be perpetuating if you do. It’s something I’ve had to think about in my own work too, even though my work is mostly sfw and any nsfw is implied — like is it harmful to write a hurt/comfort story where a Black character is in the caretaker role for a white character? What can I do to flesh out my characters beyond these roles/tropes to avoid stereotyping? It goes beyond just sex stuff and even if you don’t change anything about your dynamics (because do what you want; this is the internet after all) it’s just good to be aware of and you can make that choice for yourself. It’s always better to hurt fewer people I think.

Like it’s not that hard, it’s not policing, and it makes you a better fan, ESPECIALLY in rpf where these are actual people were writing about and any fan-perception can so easily be carried into the real world (believe me, I know from my old fandom that shit can stick)
