Chapter 3: Popular Channel
Narrated by Angel.
Angel: Hello, everyone! It's Episode 611 of the Drinking Guide with Boba, and today's topic is...
Narrator: In front of the milk tea shop, I modeled my new milk tea design, waving at the camera and smiling sweet smiles.
Narrator: Now the Boba has more than 10,000 fans!
Choose either "That fast?" or "How come?"
If "fast," ...
You: You hit 10,000 fans just like that, Angel?
Narrator: Not only that, my live stream gets over 100,000 people! I owe it all to Nikki.
If "how," ...
You: How did it grow so fast?
Narrator: Because I followed Nikki's suggestion, of course! Aren't I much different now?
--
Narrator: Ever since I wore my designs on the live stream, my fan counter started going through the roof.
Narrator: Every time I reviewed a milk tea live, I'd wear something appropriate for the product.
Narrator: And they always featured eye-catching elements relevant to milk tea. That is my unique Boba style.
Narrator: That set me apart from the countless other live streamers.
Narrator: Plus, I'm a true pro with mad skills. Then you throw in the distinctive fashion style and it's a given.
Narrator: See, the fans love me now!
Narrator: Several comments popped up on the screen...
Netizen A: I love the outfit! Want! Where can I get it?
Netizen B: I wish I had Boba's milk tea handbag! So cool!
Netizen C: Talented Boba! Not only a great job on milk tea shops, but tres-cool threads! And the ponytails complement the hat perfectly!
Narrator: I winked at the camera.
Angel: I designed all my outfits. They're not available anywhere.
Angel: However, interested parties can contact me for partnership, so we can get everyone the milk tea handbag they wanted!
Narrator: A wave of cheers flashed across the comment section.
Narrator: With a hyped audience, I turned the camera on Nikki and Momo.
Angel: Let me introduce to you two of my best friends, Nikki and Momo!
Momo: Hi all, this is Momo, the favorite of all you humans!
Narrator: At Momo's fervent request, I put up a crawler that read, "Special Guest from Moments: Master of Barbecue."
Narrator: While it baffled the audience, Momo remained undeterred.
Momo: Milk tea goes swimmingly with barbecue!
Angel: Come on, Momo and Nikki, let's get in line!
Momo: Oh god, there must be hundreds of people before us! This is too much... Not everyone can be a blogger.
Nikki: That's what makes Boba great!
Angel: You're gonna send me to cloud nine if you keep this up! But it won't seem long with us doing live stream.
Narrator: The fans loved to see us three banter, too. And people were coming up to me to say hi, so the wait wasn't boring at all.
Momo: So many viewers! Has my reputation as the Master of Barbecue far proceeded me?
Narrator: As Momo relished in his newfound "popularity," a fan ran up to me.
Fan A: I'm a fan, Boba! Can I be on camera?
Angel: Sure!
Narrator: I pulled the fan over to say hi to my viewers.
Angel: Feel free to approach me if you see me in a line!
Angel: I can tell you whatever you want to know about milk tea!
Narrator: With Nikki on my left, a fan on my right, my favorite shop before me, and me wearing the special Angel milk tea fashion...
Narrator: It was just perfect to combine everything I loved all at once. I felt fulfilled and energetic!
Narrator: Until...
Narrator: The man in front slowly pulled out a virtually endless list.
Narrator: The familiar cap, sandals...
Narrator: You again?!

It’s Been 32 Years Since My Last Confession.
From my personal experience, dating in my 30s has been a stark contrast to dating when I was younger. Back then, I wore my heart on my sleeve and proudly let my emotions rule my existence. I had felt that finding “true love” was life’s ultimate goal. Don’t get me wrong, I was never really the girl that fantasized about my wedding day or having children. Although I’d like to get married at some point (picture an elopement), there’s just been no actual yearning for that “dream wedding”. Furthermore, regardless of the fact that I do love kids, I have absolutely no desire to physically have any myself. BUT I was IN LOVE with love.
This affair was passionate, it ran deep in my veins pumping through my body like the blood I needed to live. A hopeless romantic, I was fueled by it. I spent most of my teens to early 20s transitioning out of one long term relationship to the next, casually dating for a while in college, before abruptly falling harder than I’d fallen thus far... or so I believed. I was certainly willing to put myself through more than I’d ever previously allowed but no two loves are the same. It was the start of the on again/off again relationship that would eventually carry me to 30 years of age. I remember back to one of those longer off periods, if I did spend time with anyone else, I never took the connection too seriously. Without meaning to, I was just passing time subconsciously enjoying myself until the “inevitable” would roll back around. But years later when it ended for good, I was finally ready to REALLY start over and venture back out into this world for the first time.
As we get older, the things we want in long term partners may shift along with our interests and priorities. On my end, I truly believe that this reposition was what ultimately led to the end of my own emotional investment in past relationships. The nitty gritty details really don’t matter in retrospect, we simply did not “fit” anymore and that was no one’s fault.
I now feel that there are people that are meant for different seasons of your life. They’re perfect for that time period, there to grow and learn with you while you become whoever it is you’re meant to be as a person...and then you both move on. I have walked away carrying the "positives" from each person I've loved in a carefully stitched handbag, while leaving the rest of it in a pile of ash on the floor. Why pack something up you wouldn't want to have to unpack later? Let it go; take the good. There's no need to bring the bullshit along with you on your trip. When you're done with your travels? The right person will be there and you'll be ready for them.
Anyway...so there I was, “getting back out there”, with a whole new list of characteristics I now knew I needed in a future partner. I spent a good year relishing in the fresh excitement of dating and meeting new people, all while hiding safely behind the giant wall I’d built up to protect my heart. I still keep it locked up in a safe that I alone have the key to. I refuse to give out copies to anyone that may spark even a sliver of doubt in my mind.
I was living alone for the first time in my life and this newfound freedom was exhilarating. I did not want the added pressure of having to put in the work I knew was required for anything serious to function properly. This was MY time for ME. If it caused me more stress than it did joy? Off it went. Rules of baseball, 3 strikes and you're out. My mindset continues to be the same in that aspect.
I was a modern day Victor Frankenstein, collecting pieces from each new experience, building the perfect, little monster to occupy my spare time. There was beauty in that. If something felt like it had the possibility of driving me back down Relationship Boulevard, I pulled the E-brake in that vehicle faster than I could utter the word "sabotage".
I recall something I had told a great guy who I could have genuinely developed feelings for had I pulled myself together and allowed it. In my then current state of bluntness, I’d reached out and let him know that I was afraid I might wind up actually liking him and that I just didn’t want to. Plain and simple, I would ruin things whether it be with my words, my actions, or both and attempt to shrug it right off. I was honestly nowhere near ready for something “real” and I definitely didn't want to hurt anyone. People deserve someone to care for them in the way they are looking to be cared for and at that point, I was not willing to do that. I don't believe in the modern day method of “ghosting" another person so I've always aimed for some type of closure. In my mind, at least I was being honest about where I stood emotionally. With that honesty, things were usually able to progress forward on friendly terms.
Fast forward to the start of 2021, I had unexpectedly reconnected with an old friend of the past and felt like I'd been bitten by the romance bug. We both had. The difference being, this time I was attempting to let it buzz about without swatting it away. I'd always been fond of him. Unfortunately, the timing and circumstances surrounding us were not favorable. Without giving too much detail, long distance was the lesser of the obstacles blocking that path and months of daily calls, texts, and Facetime were no match. It was complicated to say the least. I never booked the flight I'd planned to and romantically things came to a halt on both sides. I went into self preservation mode knowing my feelings were closing in on "big" enough to have gotten me hurt had I let them. I do believe that most things happen for a reason, so the takeaway there? I needed a reminder of who I was when I’d first met him and he gave me that.
Not too long after, I put myself in a "timeout" so to speak. Going back to dating with no purpose, no longer felt fun or exciting. I was tired and wanted to fully focus on myself and work. Of course things got a little lonely...so I got a dog. I began to take the necessary steps needed in order to save up for a down payment on a house. I knew I did not want to throw my money away on rent for the rest of my life and saw no point in waiting for someone to come along and take the leap with me.
More recently, after about 5 or 6 months of truly being alone, I caved and began seeing someone a friend had been trying to set me up with. Still, I had no desire or realistically the time to start a new relationship. I did enjoy his company for the most part but realized pretty early on that this person was not right for me and I was not right for him. Our differences could be exhausting at times. But quickly enough, I had grown accustomed to the companionship. I think he did as well. Nevertheless, things between us were consistently rocky.
I put my blinders on and pushed forward, beginning to try and envision a possible future because I thought that was what he wanted. I very briefly, let myself get wrapped up in the emotion of it all because a piece of me did care for him. As expected, things eventually imploded and we finally called it quits for good. It wasn't until I'd gone a couple of weeks without speaking to him, that I’d had time to clear my head and refocus. Having done so, I realized just how uninvested I really was in trying to make that relationship work. I had convinced myself I was more interested than I actually was, which definitely wasn't fair to either one of us. So with that, the lesson was an old lesson I’d been taught years ago. Trust your gut, not the recipe. Don't force anything just because it feels nice for both parties involved to have someone there.
Over the years, what I've really learned is that love is not the entire dessert, it’s the cherry on top of the cake you’ve already baked; the seasoning to the meal you’ve already cooked. It does not require you to sacrifice your own ingredients to be replaced with someone else's. They should simply compliment one another creating a wonderful new taste of their own when combined. Until something feels “delicious” again? I'll happily continue dating myself.
—Amber Lyn. March 2022.

Hello, again.
I never know what to say with these things... First blog posts are hard.
I've basically set up this blog as a, sort of, second volume. My life has taken some strange, wonderful, and at points scary turns in the last 18 months and I feel like a change of pace, and style is needed. Also, I miss blogging.
In the last two years I've been less active online because life has gotten so hectic - I changed jobs, did a lot of dating, met a wonderful man, binged on so many shows, started a development class for psychic and mediumship development, started college again (hello Psychology!) and decided to be less "connected". I find myself leaving my phone in my handbag when I get home, for a few hours at least because every day I work at a desk, in front of a screen, at the beck and call of a phone, and dealing with members of the public. I essentially run out of social energy by the time I get home, on top of having an accumulative store of rage from suppressing frustration and annoyance all day while smiling - so, i just turn off.
This frustration and annoyance is what led me to return to college. I made the decision that I was not going to spend the rest of my life sitting at a desk, chained to accounts, administration and making other people more money while I have little to no chance of progression, and absolutely no wish to progress in this business. The term "soul-destroying" has never made so much sense to me.
So, I started an introduction course to Psychology back in October and I am loving it. I'm still unsure what exactly I want to do with it but I know it involves cognition, language, and consciousness. I'm highly interested in parapsychology, Jung's theories and also the development and cognition of children.
What really brought be back to thinking of Psychology was my newfound interest in the esoteric, which lead me to spirit work, and trying to do automatic writing to get guidance from relatives in spirit because I felt as though I was losing it, going through a particularly stressful situation and not handling it very well. Which led me to seek out a reading from a medium, and then start to research and practice myself. Eventually I decided to seek out a class in order to get some guidance on what I was doing and validation that I was, in fact, doing the correct thing.
All of this, and many, many other things have happened in the past 2 years and I'm happy where I am today. Yes, I still don't quite love my present job, I could do with more money in the bank and I'm not quite where I thought I'd be at 25, but I'm not doing too bad either. I have a steady income, a great relationship and home environment, a fantastic family and amazing friends, and I'm only getting started...

This post was inspired by Ally’s series (which was inspired by Lia at Lost in a Story).
I’ve decided in 2020 that I’m going to do this twice a month and double the number of books that I’m going through (so, I’ll be doing 20 books for the rest of the year, twice a month). I have way too many books on my Goodreads TBR and I need to fix that!
I’m also thinking about completely redoing my Goodreads shelves – stay tuned!
It works like this
Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
Order on ascending date added.
Take the first 5 or 10 books (I’m doing 20 because I have way too many on my list)
Read the synopsis of the books
Decide: keep it or should it go?
Lost and Found (Emi Lost & Found #1) by Lori L. Otto
CLICK FOR SYNOPSIS
Independent and sensitive, idealistic and hopeful, Emi Hennigan lives her life with optimism and an open mind. Between sharing a tiny Manhattan apartment with her fun-loving roommate and spending most of her free time with her heart-breaker friend, Emi’s seen enough failed relationships to know what to avoid in her quest to find her true love. Not only that, but a single moment from her past lingers in her mind, setting high expectations for every man she dates.
Emi’s best friend, artist and hopeless romantic Nate Wilson, has been her closest companion all of their adult lives. After swearing off love with Emi in a silly high school pact, Nate has been seeing other women in hopes of finding one that evokes stronger feelings than the ones he’s been harboring for Emi since he was a teen. Over the span of a year, boundaries are crossed, feelings are confessed, and their unique friendship begins to blossom into something more.
Through Nate’s eyes, an atypical romance unfolds, disrupting the comfortable safe haven their friendship has provided. With a promising future ahead of them both, fate intervenes to bring two soul mates together.

Then Leah meets her hospital roommate, a young Amish girl named Rebekah, and her big family. Cynical sixteen-year-old Leah has never known people like this before. From Rebekah’s handsome brother, Ethan, who can barely look Leah in the eye, to her kind older sister, Charity, the Amish family captivates Leah with its simple, loving ways. Odd Thomas (Odd Thomas #1) by Dean Koontz
CLICK FOR SYNOPSIS
“The dead don’t talk. I don’t know why.” But they do try to communicate, with a short-order cook in a small desert town serving as their reluctant confidant. Odd Thomas thinks of himself as an ordinary guy, if possessed of a certain measure of talent at the Pico Mundo Grill and rapturously in love with the most beautiful girl in the world, Stormy Llewellyn.
Maybe he has a gift, maybe it’s a curse, Odd has never been sure, but he tries to do his best by the silent souls who seek him out. Sometimes they want justice, and Odd’s otherworldly tips to Pico Mundo’s sympathetic police chief, Wyatt Porter, can solve a crime. Occasionally they can prevent one. But this time it’s different.
A mysterious man comes to town with a voracious appetite, a filing cabinet stuffed with information on the world’s worst killers, and a pack of hyena-like shades following him wherever he goes. Who the man is and what he wants, not even Odd’s deceased informants can tell him. His most ominous clue is a page ripped from a day-by-day calendar for August 15.
Today is August 14.
In less than twenty-four hours, Pico Mundo will awaken to a day of catastrophe. As evil coils under the searing desert sun, Odd travels through the shifting prisms of his world, struggling to avert a looming cataclysm with the aid of his soul mate and an unlikely community of allies that includes the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. His account of two shattering days when past and present, fate and destiny converge is the stuff of our worst nightmares, and a testament by which to live: sanely if not safely, with courage, humor, and a full heart that even in the darkness must persevere.

The Pickup Project (Branching Game Screenplay)
Daria walks through a field outside the festival gates, through the drunken crowd wearing a promo t-shirt. She passes the security guard who mutters at her. She ignores him and walks to the ticket booth, opens the back door, shyly greets the other workers coming and going for their shifts. She’s a wallflower. She doesn’t mix with the other girls or consider the idea that something special could happen today.
Cooper (the player) driving his dad’s late model BMW wagon, his friends are rowdy and already drinking. They play loud house music from his after-market speakers that shakes the windows.
Jesse: “What?” [shallow surprise]
Cooper: “You can’t be serious.”
Matt: “I can!”
Cooper: [talking to Matt] “You can take the bus next time. She’s my dad’s age.”
Jesse: “She wants you. I know these things.” [Jesse is gay]
Matt: [snarky] “She wants your dad, just younger.”
Cooper cranks the stereo and Jesse moves his hand in the wind to the melody through the passenger window. Matt nods his head to the pounding beat. Cooper puts his hand to his mouth and rests his elbow on the window sill.
The car takes turns swiftly, the camera following closely beside its wheels, over pastoral hills away from the city.
They arrive outside the festival. Cooper parks on a hill overlooking the crowd swarming below. Jesse gets their drinks out of the hatch. The wagon’s pipe is still fuming and Matt coughs. Cooper drinks less than the others. Matt has his reasons for binging, after studying hard and acing his exams, keeping himself on track for an internship at an international law firm. Jesse hates school and wants to escape to be a rugby star. Cooper drinks because it’s normal and so is he.
Jesse: Nightside’s going to kill it. [referring to the DJ they came to see at the festival]
Matt: Only if I’m drunk enough. [finishes a beer]
He opens another as they lock the car and walk down the hill.
They move through the lot, past the throngs of partiers doing the same, drinking grocery store volume because inside the prices go up, through clouds of smoke from barbecues and cigarettes. A crowd of younger party girls accosts Jesse, the tallest, most attractive of the three, with blonde hair and blue eyes, large shoulders and a tight striped shirt, and a boyishly approachable face.
Short Girl: Hey sailor… [in a low sultry voice]
Ashley: Are you guys heading inside already? [at Cooper]
Girl in Red: We’ve got plenty to share. [stares at Jesse]
Matt: [putting his hands onto Jesse’s stable shoulders] My friend here’s quite a catch.
[Jesse digs into Matt’s ribs]
Matt: Any of you studying to be a teacher? He’s a quick learner, but he doesn’t know anything about women.
Girl in Red: [approaching and touching Jesse’s collar] I’ll give him lessons.
Short Girl: We both can.
Matt: [sees Cooper walk off to the ticket booth] We’ll have to drink with you guys another time. Let’s meet up inside.
[runs over to Cooper] Hey I thought Jesse was the gay star athlete.
Cooper: I’m not interested in hanging out with drunk high-school girls.
Matt: [casually] You never noticed the one in red sitting in our Business Cal lecture?
Cooper: Nope.
Jesse struggles free from the girls and jogs to catch up.
Jesse: Fuck…
Matt: You like it.
Jesse: The short one smashed her lips on my sleeve. [looks down at the pink smear] I hope my mom can wash it out. This is my favorite shirt.
They get in line at the ticket booth, not slurring words, just clearly intoxicated and loose. Cooper keeps his composure well. As they approach, Daria looks unremarkable in her festival shirt and hat.
Daria: Three together?
Matt: Make it four. [attempting to pull any female human into his gravity]
Daria: … [looks to Cooper, meets his eyes but there’s nothing there in this moment]
Cooper: Three together, thanks.
Matt and Jesse hand Cooper their cash and turn away, while he pulls out his wallet. The crowd of girls wander close by on their way in, calling to Jesse.
Short Girl: Hey blondie!
She shakes her chest. Matt chases, pulling the begrudging Jesse with him. Cooper struggles in his pockets, but can’t find the 2 euro coin he needs.
Cooper: You take credit cards?
Daria: Sorry, just cash.
Cooper: … [looking again through his pockets]
Daria hands him the tickets.
Daria: No worries. Just catch your friends before they reach security.
Player choice:
LOVER - What’s your name? I’ll stop back by later. [wins a bit of notoriety with Daria, she says ‘it’s Daria.’]
NEUTR - Forget it. [leaves the tickets to chase down Matt and ask for more money, losing his connection with Daria and talking to a boring guy the next time at the ticket booth.]
AGGRO - I’ve got money… [continues digging in pockets, enraging the queue, gets in argument with someone behind, pisses off Daria by being arrogantly stubborn]
Cooper: [if player accepts the tickets] Thanks.
He jogs to catch the boys before the gate checker stops them. He hands each a ticket amidst the chatty girl mob.
Matt: What took you so long? [basking in the Short Girl’s glomming attention now turned toward him, while her friend in red focus attacks Jesse]
Cooper: Forget about it, let’s get to the stage before Jesse loses his virginity.
Jesse fights off the advances of the Girl in Red and they move quickly through the crowd to the stage where Nightside is about to start. Matt doesn’t let go of the Short Girl as the six of them pass the alcohol vendors.
Jesse: [to Matt] You owe me.
Matt: Everything’s on me. [hands Cooper some money]
Cooper: Requests?
Matt: Something classy.
Jesse: Get me wasted.
Cooper walks off to the beer counter and stands in line with his newfound friend Ashley chatting about her job at a trendy shop downtown. He silently counts cash in the open as they step slowly with the queue.
The gates are closed now and Daria has left her station at the booth. She’s new to the city, having just started university and landed this job through a promotion company, hoping to make use of it later with a marketing degree. She wants to see Nightside, try and have some fun tonight, but she hasn’t made any friends yet. She brought her biggest handbag with a change of clothes and make-up for the night, hoping to feel good and enjoy the festival after work. She ducks behind a wall and takes off her top, showing her bra before putting on a blouse with a deep neckline, and putting a shiny belt with a large buckle through the loops in her leggings. She keeps her All-Stars, deciding the mud is a bit too much for high heels. In a window she dabs her face and runs bright lipstick around her lips. She puts her hair up in a messy bun and walks around the corner into the crowd.
Cooper returns with the beer, a specialty brand for Matt and a growler for Jesse, with Ashley in tow. The Girl in Red looks astonished at the size of it, stealing a sip and getting foam around her mouth. Jesse ignores her cuteness. Cooper hands it off and pulls his bottle from his jacket pocket. Matt sips the expensive import, while the girls share a massive margarita Cooper used their money to buy since they’re underage.
Jesse: That’ll work. [chugging half before the Girl in Red can take anymore from the cup]
Short Girl: Hey, isn’t this the greatest?!
Jesse: Greater than great… [eyeing her angrily out of the corner of his eye]
Matt grabs her waist and ushers her away from his dangerous blonde friend. The Girl in Red moves in closer to Jesse. Cooper is finishing his bottle quickly. The player can choose to push the communication with his companion, whose name is now known to be Ashley because she offered it, or he can distance himself and make her angry. Regardless, Ashley will follow him a second time to the beer counter, after the DJ finishes his set. They’ll run into Daria in line.
Cooper: I’m going for more. [walks away]
He walks to the beer line, with Ashley slightly behind. He sees the girl from the ticket booth as he approaches, but she looks different, dramatic, and he heads in her direction.
Player Choice:
LOVER - Hey you… [Grabs her waist casually, her eyes grow huge, kisses her, Ashley walks away sad but understanding she’s beaten]
NEUTR - Daria, this is Amber… Amber, Daria. [Ashley gets pissed and leaves]
AGGRO - What the fuck Daria?! [excitedly happy] I thought you were dead! [completely ignores Ashley who butts in angrily]
If Player chose AGGRO then he has to deal with Ashley’s anger:
Ashley stomps in.
Daria: Oh… hi, I don’t know either of you, so this is new…
Cooper: I’m Cooper. Nice to meet you again.
Ashley: So who am I? I thought we were together tonight?!
Player choice:
LOVER - I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to be cruel. I’m just not into you. [Ashley says goodbye and attaches to Matt and the Short Girl, which is better for Cooper because it makes everyone happy]
NEUTR - I’m too romantic for you. [Ashley slaps him and leaves. Daria leaves too. Cooper can find a new match in the beer line]
AGGRO - You’re boring. Go away. [Ashley punches him. Hard. Daria leaves. Cooper can find a new match in the beer line]
If Ashley leaves peacefully, Cooper explains himself.
Cooper: Hey, hope that wasn’t too far.
Daria’s response dependent upon choice in line:
LOVER - [she kisses him again]
NEUTR - No problem. Now you owe me 2 euros and a drink.
AGGRO - It’s ok I guess. Did your friends put you up to it? [still suspicious]
Cooper: Just some teamwork. I probably just ruined their night. Thanks for the help. So did you come to see Nightside?
Daria: Yeah, I love him.
Player choice:
LOVER - Well we better get you to the ball. [takes her hand and fights through the crowd toward the main stage]
NEUTR - Anyone but Skrillex… [leads the way through the crowd]
AGGRO - He’ll wanna see tits. [tries to put her on his shoulders but she slaps him and leaves]
SUB-PLOT if player chose AGGRO:
Player must talk her into coming back to the stage. Daria runs away past the beer counter. Cooper chases. He gets in front of her. She’s fuming.
Player choice:
LOVER - Whoa, whoa… I didn’t think you’d take it so seriously. [Daria returns to the show]
NEUTR - Guys like to see tits… [Daria ignores him and goes home. Player only has Ashley as a possibile scenario now]
AGGRO - Hey, you’ll get onstage! [Glances at her chest. Daria slaps him again, disappears. Ashley scenario reopens]
If Player gets Daria to return to the show with him, the next challenge is to get her to dance close to him. They start to bounce to the rhythm next to eachother, in a mass of people in the middle of the outdoor arena. The music pumps, the speakers rattle their internal organs. They have to shout to communicate. There’s a rhythm mini-game after Cooper realizes she can’t hear anything he says:
Cooper: You look great!
Daria: Thanks! So do you!
Cooper: I almost didn’t reckognize you!
Daria: WHAT?!
Cooper: … [shakes his head casually and turns to the stage, notices her start to move to the beat]
Player choices:
LOVER - [moves in closer, which starts the average difficulty rhythm game, feeling eachother’s proximity]
NEUTR - [keeps his distance, which triggers an easier rhythm game, but harder conversations later]
AGGRO - [moves in and uses his hands, which starts the highest difficulty rhythm game, but gives him faster conversations later if he succeeds]
She can only feel him, no words. If the player can match the rhythm it results in a faster, stronger bond.
{There’s an inherent shallowness to the Ashley scenario. Daria’s pickup is more fulfilling, and clearly long term. The player can pickup Ashley to help Matt stay with the Short Girl, so the payoff for the player is to increase his friendship bond with Matt. This enables him to pickup other casual girls in other scenarios using Matt as a wingman. If the Player follows Daria instead, his pickup skills are increased overall, and the story jumps to after their break-up, when Jesse becomes his wingman because Matt is pissed off.}

Sanele Junior Xaba: ‘I take pride in my albinism’ | Fashion
Sanele Junior Xaba makes photographers and stylists get a little carried away. This year alone the South African model has posed naked save for a swarm of butterflies on the cover of Polish design magazine Label and worn feathered angel wings and a loincloth for Dutch art photographer Gemmy Woud-Binnendijk in a depiction of the myth of Cupid and Psyche. Viewed more than 25m times on YouTube alone, the jawdropping pièce de résistance in Sanele’s portfolio is the ad for sportswear brand Adidas Originals in which shirtless Sanele stands in for the wind god Zephyr in a dystopian reworking of Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus. Here, he writhes on a set strewn with broken computers to a cover of Sinatra’s My Way as Venus takes a selfie inside a giant satellite dish.
It’s all gorgeous, captivating work, and Sanele isn’t complaining one bit, but I wonder whether he might sometimes like to be asked just to stand next to an attractive young woman at a bus stop, or mope handsomely on a staircase. You know, standard male model gigs like those performed by his contemporaries at Boss Models in Cape Town. Jobs where you turn up and pull on a beanie and some jeans, rather than don a ceremonial wreath and pour a carton of milk down your front.
“People have said things to me like: ‘Oh, but you don’t look like the Heineken- drinking guy,’” he says. Today he’s dressed in his favourite black fedora (“I love a hat”), black skinny jeans and black Dr Martens. “But I do drink Heineken,” he continues, “so maybe they need to get out there and look at who’s actually drinking that stuff.”

I can’t fault his logic. But if we’re honest, the reason image-makers seem to go a bit high concept at the prospect of Sanele is because, apart from all the standard-issue stuff – runway-ready 6ft stature, muscular torso, exquisite face furniture – he has what several photographers I speak to refer to obliquely as “a very special aesthetic”. In other words, Sanele has albinism, a genetic condition that results in the absence of pigment in his eyes, hair and skin. This does not make him “albino” or “an albino”, a term that’s unhelpful because, as Sanele puts it: “It implies that we’re a species, or a race apart.” In fact, people of all races can be affected by albinism. Still, the condition seems to be most prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa, where the UN Human Rights Council is implementing a five-year regional action plan to counter the astonishing discrimination and persecution that continues to exist.
I realise that it sounds a bit Zoolander, but I want to play my part to promote diversity in the fashion the industry
In his professional life, Sanele has encountered tokenism from image-makers of all stripes. “I’ve had situations where casting directors have said: ‘No thanks, we’ve worked with Shaun Ross already” – Shaun Ross being an American model with albinism, who has appeared in music videos for Lana Del Rey and Beyoncé. Does that make him angry, I ask? “Well, it makes me want to say, ‘How many white models have you used this week?’ They’re not all considered to be the same person.” Still, he’s known for being patient and polite: “I realise it sounds a bit Zoolander, but I want to play my part to promote diversity in the industry. The commercial end of fashion is crucial as it dictates what’s cool, and the idea of cool is changing drastically. It feels more inclusive, but it can still do a whole lot better.”
Sanele was due to spend this summer at the most commercial of all the fashion capitals, New York. Several agencies there had expressed interest in representing him and ordinarily – because of his proven track record in modelling – a visa would have been granted in a jiffy. Instead, Sanele’s application was declined twice in the midst of Donald Trump’s chaotic visa shake-up. “The authorities weren’t sure about my intended reasons for coming to the States,” Sanele says, neutrally. I make an unfavourable reference to the example of Slovenian-born First Lady Melania Trump, who was apparently paid for 10 modelling jobs before she received legal authorisation to work in the United States, but Sanele will not be drawn. “It’s fine, it’s OK,” he says. “I’m the kind of person who believes everything happens for a reason.”
Instead of New York, Sanele decided to go to the Netherlands, where he has family, including a great aunt who moved to Dordrecht during apartheid. Nowadays she’s what Sanele calls “a hardcore Dutchie” and she was proud to see him walk in Amsterdam Fashion Week, one of several engagements arranged at short notice by Elite Model Management Amsterdam, the agency that supported Sanele’s straightforward visa application.

While appearing on a popular late-night TV talk show, Sanele met Nicky Libert, a Dutch local and fellow Elite charge who worked on a building site but shot to Instafame after being snapped by a British tourist. The two unconventional clotheshorses hit it off and a bromance began. “He’s Tweedledee and I’m Tweedledum,” says Sanele. Libert invited Sanele to come and live with his family in Almere, just outside Amsterdam, and has been introducing him to Dutch culture, one Turkish and Surinamese takeaway at a time.
I used spray tans and very dark foundation. It looked really bad, especially because I had braces and terrible acne
“There’s so much variety and diversity,” says Sanele. “It’s rich with culture from all over the world – and I thought that South Africa had a lot going on!”
Sanele was born in a township outside Durban in 1994, the year South Africa transitioned from apartheid into democracy – making him a first-edition “born free”. When he was little, strangers would assume he was a white child in the care of a black nanny. In fact, his Zulu mother, Sithembisile, is a medical technologist who took Sanele’s albinism in her stride, but left the township after an incident in which another child shouted “umhlope” (Zulu for “white man”) and threw a rock at his head. There was considerable bleeding and he still has the peanut-sized scar on his forehead. “That was when my mum decided to move to the city,” says Sanele. His father, he says, was never in the picture – “a rolling stone” with an undisclosed number of kids.
Unusually, given that racial integration was in its infancy, Sithembisile enrolled Sanele at the fee-paying, majority-white Open Air School in Durban (motto: “I can and I will”) where he was, he jokes, “an undercover black”. Although he was acutely aware of the stares that his alabaster skin and naturally ginger hair attracted when he was out in public, he says his mother’s insistence that “I shouldn’t look on my albinism as any sort of disadvantage” bolstered his self-esteem. But with puberty, it collapsed entirely. “When you hit 13 or so, you become self-conscious and you start to want to impress people,” he says. Other pupils began to taunt him about his appearance. “I could give you a whole list of names: Casper the Friendly Ghost, white pudding, milk of magnesia, Tipp-Ex, snow globe…” Sanele’s actual name means “enough” in Zulu. He is an only child.

“I went through a stage of depression during which I did lots of desperate online research on how to get melanin,” says Sanele. Predictably, his attempts to boost the pigment-creating substance came to naught, so he resorted to the cosmetics counter. “I was experimenting with spray tans and very dark foundation,” he recalls, “and it kinda looked really bad, especially because I had braces and terrible acne.” He was already taking Roaccutane, the controversial retinoid drug, to try to get his spots under control. “For four months I had this circumference of heat around my face and it was bright red, like a tomato.”
Now I’ve realised I can use my looks to raise awareness, I’ve started to take a lot more pride in my own albinism
To make matters worse, it was around this time that Sanele’s father – a perfect stranger – came back on the scene, only to tell Sanele that he was dying. “He apologised to me for everything before he passed,” recalls Sanele, before starting to giggle reflexively. When I listen to the recording later, the peals sound like nervousness bordering on panic. “I’m sure it seemed like I was heartless at the time, but I just couldn’t get emotional about it because I didn’t really know who had died and I was just too confused,” he says.
Back at school, he resolved to toughen up and confront the bullies. “I knew of another kid – not someone with albinism – who had hanged himself at the age of 10 and I just thought: ‘That’s not going to happen to me. I’m not going to let my entire student career go like this.’ I decided to beat the hell out of the next person who called me names.”
The strategy worked (“People learned not to mess with Sanele or he’s going to beat you up. That’s not the kind of person I am, but I had to grow a pair,” he says). In due course, so did the acne treatment. Sanele refers to what came next as his “blow-up season”. Buoyed by the confidence of clear skin, a promotion in the playground pecking order and his newfound athletic prowess as a championship swimmer with the body to boot, he began to socialise with a vengeance.

It was at the age of 15, while attending the Durban July horse racing, that he was approached by a model scout. “I took the card and then I thought: ‘Nah, I’m not going to do that shit,’” he recalls. The scout persisted, tracking Sanele down via Facebook and persuading him that there was money to be made. “As a teenager, scoring a buck is a big thing,” Sanele smiles. So he walked in Durban fashion week and appeared in campaigns for local designers before transferring to a more prestigious model agency in Johannesburg. “They got me catalogue work for Adidas, I did GQ magazine, and that’s when I realised that this industry could use a whole lot more diversity.”
Increasingly, he now sees his Instagram account as a means of owning the conversation, and photos are frequently accompanied by lengthy and heartfelt “believe in yourself” captions.
“At the end of the day, I know there’s an expiry date to what I do and my dream is to make my presence last a bit longer, to leave a footprint in the industry.” Among his 21,000-plus followers are teens struggling to come to terms with their own albinism. “I get messages from people saying: ‘Oh you are so brave for what you’re doing, I’m ashamed to even go outside,” he says.
Things are much worse, he notes, in the parts of Africa that GQ doesn’t typically reach. In some regions of Tanzania, for example, people with albinism live in fear of mutilation and murder because potions made from their body parts can command large sums on the black market. “There’s a whole industry run by so-called spiritual leaders,” says Sanele.
In some regions, people with albinism live in fear of mutilation and murder as potions are made from their body parts
Since he has been in Holland, he has connected with Inside The Same, a charity that campaigns for the rights of individuals with albinism. With them, he’s planning a visit to an orphanage in Tanzania for children who’ve been abandoned as the result of stigma and ignorance. In some communities, children with albinism are believed to be reincarnated ghosts of slave masters, as opposed to what they are: innocents with a genetic idiosyncrasy.
“The charity provides the kids with sunscreen and medical treatment because a lot of them have skin cancer,” says Sanele. “Now that I’ve realised I can use my looks to raise awareness and to challenge the perceptions and stereotypes about the condition, I’ve started to take a lot more pride in my own albinism.”
As I pack up my things and we say our goodbyes, Sanele tells me he would hate for his nascent activism to somehow overshadow the meticulous work done by others: “I’m glad to assist and I really want to learn,” he says. He’s flying back to Cape Town tomorrow for a wedding – a cousin from his dad’s side of the family – so I ask what he’s most missed about South Africa during his summer away. His response is a little more starry than before: “I miss the nightclubs where they give me a private table because I’m a model, and I can take my friends and drink champagne all night without having to open my wallet. It’s fun, now and again, to celebrate your youth.” Good on him, I think. But so much for Heineken.

BLOGGERS WE LOVE// Kristin of Modishandmain
For this months Bloggers We Love , were featuring the lovely Kristin Mansky of Modishandmain. We’re always on the lookout for talented bloggers and creatives as we build our own little tribe and Kristin is one on top of our list. She shares such deep wisdom and passion for travel and photography – just as we do, its hard not to be inspired by her. Read on and learn more about Kristin below.
“I like my pictures to tell MY story.” – Kristin M.
Q. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do? Perhaps share a quirk or two as well while your at it!
I’m Kristin, the creative persona behind the lifestyle blog Modish & Main. The blog was created 3 years ago as a way to share my love for home decor, DIY projects, healthy living, new adventures and of course, cameos of my dog. It stems from a passion of wanting to capture all things towards living a stylized life. When I’m not blogging, I’m working on the launch of my creative marketing business for small brands. It’s a lot to juggle at times, but the desire to be a solo entrepreneur is what makes it worth it day in and day out.
Q. How and when did you fall in love with photography?
My passion for taking photographs really changed for me once I started my blog. At that time I only had access to a point-and-shoot camera, therefore I borrowed my parents DSLR camera and just started taking photographs. I can tell you this, they were not good. I was so determined to post high quality images on my blog, that I started reading anything and everything I could on photography and what it always kept coming back to was getting out there and taking the photos. It felt like each month was so much better from the last, but with the willingness to learn I just kept at it and it ended up manifesting itself into a newfound passion.
Q. Do you have a favourite photographer? How does their work inspire you as a photographer?
That’s a great question and one that is not always so easy to answer! Being that my life touches so many different avenues, I’m drawn to different photographers in how they capture a scene from their own point-of-view. I particularly love the photographs taken by John Hillin, Jana Williams Garrett King and David Yarrow. John and Jana both have a focus on capturing lifestyle shots whether it be for a blogger or a wedding. They each have a keen eye for their particular style and their images are always so beautiful and full of emotion. Garrett King takes the most insanely gorgeous outdoor, active photos that make me want to jump into the scene. As for David Yarrow, his works simply speaks for itself. As an avid animal lover, he captures natures beasts in the most beautiful, raw way that I have ever seen.
Q. What was your career path like? How did you go from an aspiring photographer to a professional photographer and making a living out of your passion?
My career path into photography was simply born out of passion. I was working corporate marketing positions and once I launched my lifestyle blog things started to have a natural, organic growth to them. Once I got my hands on an entry-level DSLR camera, I couldn’t put it down. I was constantly upgrading my lenses and finally decided to put myself on the line and invest full-heartedly and monetarily into a professional DSLR camera. Once that happened, there was no turning back for me and my desire to take beautiful photographs was the driving force behind me taking it to a professional level. I started getting compliments on my work, people asking about my portfolio and it just grew from there to where it is now in just 3 years. I am at my most happiest when I’m behind the lens of a camera.
Q. What does a day in a life of a photographer look like?
Never the same! Some days I am shooting content around my home for the blog, creating and styling a food recipe for a collaboration, taking lifestyle portrait shots for a brand or I’m out exploring & capturing the beauty that is around me. It’s really rare for me not to have a camera around. I think it’s FOMO (fear of missing out) on the perfect shot. If I’m not out photographing, then I’m in front of my computer editing shots in Lightroom. I love each and every aspect of my job.
Q. What camera do you normally shoot with? Whats your number one go-to lens of choice?
These days I am shooting with a Canon 5D Mark III and often have my 24-70mm f/2.8 lens attached. I often feel like I am cheating on my 50mm, but when you’re on the go or have a multitude of shots to take, the 24-70mm really can capture it all. With my recent travels to Italy, Lake Tahoe and soon, Greece, it allows me to just carry along one lens that will accomplish everything I need.
Q. What is the biggest challenge you have faced as a photographer and how have/are you overcoming it?
There is always the challenge of comparing yourself to other peoples work and never feeling like you’re at their level. Whether it be the lighting they chose, the angle they shoot at or the composition of the photograph, it will always be something. Rather than getting discouraged like I used to at the beginning, I no longer look at the images in terms of comparison, but rather for inspiration. I’m constantly saving images to a folder on my phone or computer and will reference them for future projects. It’s an amazing community to be a part of and embracing it is far more productive than challenging it.

Q. What do you usually carry inside your THEIT bag?
Most of the space in my THEIT Colt camera bag is taken up by my Canon 5D Mark III with 24-70mm lens. I also include my iPhone, wallet, lip balm, lipgloss, pen and additional memory card. I absolutely love the elastic straps on the inside cover of the bag. When it’s not holding my USB cords, they make for the perfect lip balm/gloss holder!
Q.What do you love most about your THEIT bag?
That it can hold my 5D Mark III with the lens attached and still be a stylish camera bag. I have really struggled in the past with finding a bag that can hold how substantial this camera is and still look like a handbag a woman would want to carry. The functionality is absolutely perfect, from the outside pocket that can hold your wallet or phone to the detailing on the cover of the bag and the little pocket in the back. It’s all been thought of with a woman on-the-go in mind.
Q. Inspiration can be found in so many forms. Where do you draw inspiration from?
I get inspiration from everything I touch. No longer am I just reading a magazine for it’s written word, I’m looking at the image accompanying the article and observing how it conveys the desired message. I love watching the light and how it can change a rather simple object into something beautiful. My inspiration really comes from living life without boundaries and being open to moments that surround us.
Q. Can you share with us your most favourite photography tip, tool or technique when shooting or processing?
I’ve already mentioned my love for playing around with the aperture, so my other tip would be on taking that shot that’s personal to you. Let’s say you are out traveling and everyone is gathered around the same spot, taking the same photo. Look around you and maybe by climbing up a few more rocks or bending around that tree branch you can snap a perspective that no one else is getting. That’s what will really make your photograph stand out.
Q. What advice would you give someone who is just starting photography or finding their way in the world of photography?
Just keep taking photographs. It is very easy to get caught up in all the technicalities and additional products available, but if you aren’t comfortable with your camera then it will show.
Q. Your favourite photography wisdom or quote.
“Travel. It leaves you speechless and then turns you into a storyteller.” – Ibn Battuta
