👀 who's Rosalind?
okay . after letting this stew for awhile i am finally getting to it
Rosalind Woodlane is one of the main characters in the Arthur WIP. She appears only in the After segments, but is there from literally the start of them (so, chapter 2). she lives in the town he unceremoniously washes up on the beaches of on the morning of his 21st birthday, directly after Alexei's death. her mother, Willow, is the owner of the Willowwood Tavern that he stays at for a few days in exchange for being a dishwasher. Rosalind takes immediate interest in Arthur, because frankly, he's the most interesting thing that's ever happened to her---when else has a quiet, scraggly, traumatized-looking man literally shown up on her doorstep covered in blood? never, that's when.
Rosalind is a fundamentally curious person. she's incredibly bored by the small-town life she's grown up facing. she's autistic and intersex, and while her family is kind and caring, she feels suffocated by their attempts to protect her and feels very clearly different from those around her. she's 23, and she desperately wants to be studying at any of the magical universities in the south, to be making historic strides in research, but instead... she's here, washing dishes every morning, helping with meals every night, and going slightly bonkers having read every single book on the esoteric and magical in her town at least 3 times.
because of her thirst for knowledge, she's essentially the perfect encyclopedia for Arthur, who's just exited a community where he knew... well, nothing about the Real World. she figures out that he's woefully unprepared, and says she'll give him any and all information he needs, in exchange for taking her on his journey with her and teaching her magic. she doesn't care that both things are dangerous--she feels like she'll wither away and die if nothing changes in her life.
generally, Rosalind leans into the fact she's different. she dresses eccentrically on purpose, and has forgone masking in favour of just saying and doing what comes to mind and letting people be weirded out on their own time. she tends to assume that every trait she exhibits is a flaw, and leans into the idea that anyone who likes her is humoring her. she's insanely stubborn, visibly awkward, and wicked smart, but she's also intensely kind and compassionate; she just doesn't really know it yet, because in her eyes, her weirdness is unkind to other people. throughout the course of the story, Arthur and Orion become incredibly important to her. Arthur, because he's the first person to ever openly and clearly be frustrated because she's smarter than him and because she purposely pisses him off, not just because she's "weird" (he very clearly doesn't give a shit about that part), Orion, because he's also experienced growing up Different (autistic) and he admires her ability to be herself even when it's scary (he's very very high masking and people pleasing), and both of them generally because they see her as a person with a variety of traits and wants, not just The Girl Who Is Strange. they see her curiosity, how genuinely hard it is for her to socially interact, her determination to do what's right, her stubbornness and spite, her love of bugs and fish and reptiles, her absolute admiration for magic as a concept, her ability to spot details and contradictions when no one else does, the pressure she feels to give back to her parents by eroding her own life, the way she thinks she's unlovable as she is. and they love her ! they both grow to love her, and she loves them.
she ends up in somewhere between a QPR and a romantic relationship with Orion (best friends who kiss?), and the door is very open for her and Arthur to have some sort of relationship as well. she is canonically polyamorous. both boys' response to this is, "i want her to experience as much love as she wants, and be given as much love as she can", + Arthur is also nebulously polyam, so they don't care.
post-canon i have a very clear vision of her thriving in the growing magical academic field, and it is canon that she establishes and names the specific study of necromancy and paranormal magic. (this is like. casually name dropped in other wips that take place in the same world, like GFS.)
tldr. she's blorbo :)
