Hello! I'm new to tumblr and i saw some uni bloggers that inspired me to also create a lil blog. I'm hoping this way i can stay focused during my summer break!
About me:
I'm 16 years old, bisexual, portuguese, still in high school and my last name can be directly translated to milk.
I have recently adopted two male black kittens (siblings) from a vet. There's Mero (red collar) and Miro (dark blue collar), the chaotic creatures that explore everything, confusing human legs for couch legs and jumping on people mid litter scoop.
I like videogames such as Stardew Valley, the sims, Hollow Knight, Watch dogs, Assassin's Creed, Minecraft, Tomodachi life, PlateUp, etc. I play mostly on ps4 but i also play pirated games on pc.
My dream job would be of a programmer and i'm planning on going to uni for computer science. So far i've studied some functions on python but haven't programmed anything. Also know a thing or two about html.
I'm currently in a theather group on my local area. It's a pretty cool free hobby and i've made a couple friends there.
I love reading, especially fantasy, horror, thrillers and mystery. Usually read on my phone but i do have a small collection of physical books. My favorite tropes are found family. Don't like reading books focused only around romance or that have smut but don't mind having those as a side dish.
I also love writing, mostly in the fantasy/sci-fi genre. Have i finished any WIP? No, but does it matter? Also no. Would like to finish one some day though, and publish at least one book.
I'm also learning to play the classic guitar. I don't like to freestyle and my favorite song to play is Greensleeves. Am still a noob.
I'm currently trying to fight depression.

 Six College/University!AU
Profiles and aesthetics✨
Tumblr media
Age 22, only child
She has a Bachelor’s degree in Business and Management, and she’s finishing her postgraduate Master’s in Finance
The Castile-Aragon family is old money rich. Her parents own a big company that she’s meant to inherit
Didn’t come out to her family yet. She’s.. not scared, per se, she knows her parents will love her no matter what, but still she feels like she’s disappointing them
(Aragon: I will tell them... eventually. It’s not like I have a serious girlfriend or anything)
Hasn’t gotten used to British weather even though she has been living in England since she was 15. Starts to use winter wear in September ‘cause she’s always cold
Aesthetic: ankle length boots. Has tons of blazers, wears them under a Burberry coat. Turtleneck sweaters and bottom-down shirts. Jeans or wide leg-pants. Likes to wear layered jewelry, has one gold cross chain necklace she never takes off
Tumblr media
Age 22, youngest child. She has two older brothers: Edward(the family disappointment) and Thomas(the golden boy)
Their parents kind of pinned them against each other when they were young, so they’re all super competitive. And dramatic. Jane has mosty outgrown this
(Thomas: I get it, you’re jealous. I’d be jealous too if someone was better than me at everything their whole life
Jane: not everything! I’m a better dancer than you *starts dancing horribly*
Parr: hon, you have badly misjudged your own abilities
Thomas: you think you’re better than me?! *also starts dancing terribly*
Parr: nevermind, you got a shot)
Just finished her Bachelor's in Social Work. Used to work part-time at the university’s library, that’s where she met Cathy
They have been dating for about a year and a half. They talked about moving in together, and when Jane scored her internship(full-time counseling job at a public school) they decided to speed things up, since Cathy’s apartment is way closer to it
Proud mama bear of her friend group
Aesthetic: ballet flats. Loves cozy cardigans. And scarves, she likes knitting them. Wears a lot of blouse and skirt convos, and dresses over long sleeve t-shirts. Likes flower patterns and clothing with ruffles. Wears soft, natural looking make-up
Tumblr media
Age 21, has an older sister(Mary) and a twin brother(George)
Her father is a politician, and used to be an ambassador in France. Her family is upper-middle class
She has a Bachelor's degree in Music Composition, and she’s currently doing a foundation degree in Music Performance. She plays the guitar
Sort of disowned. Parents do not agree with her carreer choice, and her father keeps pressuring her to “leave her hobby to do a real carreer, like Law or Politics”. They just now stopped paying for her tuition and most of her expenses, so she’s not exactly broke(..yet)
Aesthetic: heelys
(Parr: Anne, no, we live in the thrid floor and there isn’t an elevetor in our building
Boleyn: ugh fine.. whatever mom
Parr: I’m younger than you!)
black converse. Wears fishnet stockings with e v e r y t h i n g, ripped jeans, shorts, leather skirts. Band T-shirts and plaid fannel shirts. Leather jacket. Ear cuff earrings. Does not own a coat or any proper winter clothes, except this one knitted hat with a pompom
Tumblr media
Age 20. No siblings. Her mom raised her alone and she is Cathy’s hero
Just graduated top of her class in record time, girl was tired™. Got a Joint Honours(it’s like a double major) degree in Journalism and English
...who are we kidding, she still tired™. Wouldn’t sleep at all if Jane didn’t drag her to bed
(Boleyn: don’t make me put sleeping pills in your coffee again
Seymour: ..again?)
Both excited and very stressed about having finished her university studies and finding a job
Reluctant mother of the children she has befriended(Anne and Kat)
Aesthetic: oxford shoes. Has reading glasses. Very practical dresser, her clothes always have tons of pockets. Wears overalls a lot. Likes double demin. And stripes! T-shirts with slogans fill her wardrobe, nerdy, sarcastic, funny, she has them all. Has a blue parka with a fur collar
Tumblr media
Age 20, has a younger sister, they get along well. Both of them claim the other is their dads’ favourite child(which, true, but they both get to be one’s favorite)
She’s a RA at Richmond Hall, and she’s doing her fourth year of Veterinary Science. Loves dogs so much
Her family is new money rich. Sister does modelling, and is now the face of the famous Holbein magazine. Anna and her kinda look alike and people tend to think Anna’s famous
Has a motorcycle
She and Catalina play football/soccer together on the university’s team
Aesthetic: combat boots, or running shoes. Faux fur, and faux fur only, will scream at you about animal cruety for asuming otherwise.
(Cleves: and I’m going to be a vet for god’s sake)
Black jeans. Cargo pants. Will wear sports clothes whenever she can manege. Basic top and basketball shorts. Tracksuits. Decided to straighten her hair because it took too much time styling her curls everyday. Has a nose ring. Always paints her nails, mostly metalic colors and reflective nail polish. Huge coats
Tumblr media
Age 18, middle child that doesn’t get enough attention. Her parents divorced when she was 10. She lived at her dad’s and occasionally crashed at her grandmother’s or her aunt(Anne’s mom)’s when he travelled
Just started her first year at the university, studies Sociology oriented to Human Rights
She’s very exited to be there because she thought she wouldn’t be able to aford going
Got a cheerleading scholarship. People often underestimate her or call her an airhead, which pisses her off
(Some asshole: wait you have an A level GCE?
Howard: what, like, it’s hard?)
now living at the dorms
Aesthetic: sneakers. Likes to be cute and confortable. Wears leggins a lot(with prints!!), and a crop top or an oversize hoodie. Weakness for sparkles, in everything, definitly loves glitter make-up. Has holographic raincoat. Unlike Anne, she knows how to layer her clothes, everything is winter-wear if you put enough things under it
Yes I know, y’all wanted a fic(..and myself included) and this are random headcanons no one but me cares about BUT—
More drabbles are coming! (I can't lie to you guys, I don’t know if I’ll ever write a multi-chapter fic with the original idea but continue writing little piecces of this AU, it’s tons of fun)

Hello!
While being locked up at home, I've been working on this Brindleton Bay “override” save. This is a save in which I rebuilt/renovated all of the lots in Brindleton Bay. Whilst thinking of how to approach this, I knew that this world was New England inspired (Maine, coasts/beaches of New Hampshire and Massachusetts). While using pictures I’ve taken as a reference, the houses/lots exteriors fit the Cape Cod, homey, and overall what you would probably see in New England.
There are a total of 16 Lots (8 residential, 8 venues) and 10 New Townies (3 are Currently Not Living in the Sims World)
Tumblr media
1) Adilynn Gillian-Regans
Adilynn moved out from her best friend's house to Brindleton Bay after the death of her mothers years ago. Her mother Demi was assassinated when she was a young child by an unknown killer. Struggling to cope the lost of her lover, Adilynn's sole surviving parent disappeared and hasn't been seen since. With being a substitute teacher and dealing with some strange entity occurring in her body, will the memories of her mothers resurface?
2) Doty
Dianna Doty is a famous at-home gardener. She grows her own vegetables and sells them along with using them to whip up some tasty dishes.
3) Connor-Braxton
The Connor-Braxtons are your atypical family. Elise was pregnant with Mason as an early young adult while she lived in the city. She met Kirk online and since then the two have been talking and got close. Paisley and Mason get along well even though their polar opposites. Mason loves blue and pink and Paisley is just like Elise. Before getting married, the couple brought Emilia into the world. Years later, Emilia got herself into a sticky situation. How long will she be able to hide her secret?
4) Berkshire
The Berkshire name have been around for centuries. Emilio and Marion moved to Brindleton Bay when their daughter Phoenix was a toddler. Through the years, Phoenix and her parents have clashed. With the addition of Emilio's parents, will the family be able to continue their legacy and keep their secret covered?
5) Hanson
Recently married, the Hansons have not only just adopted two girls but also moved into a new house! Not knowing anyone in town, the Hansons will have to try and juggle taking care of a newborn as well as their three other kids plus adjusting to their new dream jobs. Will Spyro's albinism keep him from spending quality time outside with his children? Will Bria and Spyro be able to pay the rent on time?
6) Tanager Siblings
Winston and Cassandra moved out from their humble home in Windenburg to the coasts of Brindleton Bay. Having grown up in a large family, the two feel a sense of relief and serenity as they embark into young adult. Winston is the oldest and the genius out of his five siblings; Cassandra was the rebellious and irresponsible one. After Cassandra moved into Winston's home, will the two opposites be able to remain civil like before?
7) Barroso-Newell-Sansalone
Alex Barroso's life fell apart when she ended up pregnant with Miwa as a teen. Two men and four children later, Alex has been juggling multiple jobs and moving from house to house for many years. One day she was offered a job as a teaching assistant at Brindleton Bay's local school. Alex accepted, hoping that her dreams of becoming a music teacher are finally going to come through! But will having no college degree and raising four kids get in the way of achieving her dreams?
8) Residential Lot (20x20)
Bedlington Boathouse
§19,848
1 bed, 1 bath
9) Sporting Space (30x20)

11) Club Calico (40x30)

╰☆╮MUSE 46 — wait, is that cerise “reese” du pont? is it just me or does the twenty-one year-old look exactly like abigail cowen? last i heard, they still weren’t over being exposed by the sentinel. according to the app, they can be credulous & turbulent, but i’ve also heard they're intrepid & audacious. can’t be too sure, people have a way of surprising you. all i know is that they remind me of vape scented smoke appearing in the middle of lecture , filming viral tik tok’s in public , the brushing down of a horse , forgetting a pencil but remembering to bring the juul to class & drinking homemade moonshine for barbie movie drinking games. honestly, the broadcast communications major should try to keep their head down. after the events of last semester, i wouldn’t want to be in their shoes. ╰☆╮
wow hey hi hello!! i’m kaya and this is my lil crackhead, reese!! this got really long because i never know when to shut up but if you want to plot pls hit me up here on tumblr or on discord at medieval 4loko gang#5402
P A R A L L E L S
gigi ( booksmart ) , keanu reeves ( always be my maybe ) , serena van der woodsen ( gossip girl ) , kirby anders ( dynasty )
T R O P E S
hard-drinking party girl , cloudcuckoolander , the trickster , upper-class equestrian , fleeting passionate hobbies , naive animal lover , fearless fool , playing with fire , parental neglect , fantasy-forbidding father
S U M M A R Y
born and raised in wilmington, delaware on the du pont family ranch, reese learned how to ride and compete on her family’s thoroughbreds. she’s a seasoned equestrian who typically competed in eventing and throughout the years had accumulated a series of ribbons and trophies between dressage, cross-country, and show jumping. definitely was a horse girl growing up and tbh still is???? definitely not the type to eat grass anymore BUT if given the chance she will not shut up about them.
a veterinarian before marrying into the du pont family, reese’s mother had their ranch doubling as both a home and veterinary clinic where the kids would help with the animals and keep them company. this caused reese to develop a soft spot for them, one that contributed to her going vegetarian at the age of 12 and eventually vegan at 15. it was also this love of animals that led her to wanting to help the environment they lived in and so her parents put her in girl scouts and eventually her love for the outdoors would cause her to join steinhardt’s outing club.
while her mother, eleanor, also helps out with the du pont family business of breeding thoroughbreds as well as run her clinic, her father, pierre, is a chairman of dupont, a conglomerate who got its start in the black powder market before expanding into chemicals for agriculture, materials science, and specialty products.
he was the type to have HIGH expectations for his family, expectations that reese never met. not that she cared to. definitely not a daddy’s girl, she’ll be the first one to call her father out for being a pompous douche straight to his face. probably quoted this to her father during a thanksgiving toast of “what are we thankful for this year”.
the black sheep of her family, even at a young age she could be found stirring up some trouble and almost always dragging one of her siblings or cousins along with her. a rebellious child who didn’t like being put into a box, she lived in a fantasy world of whimsy, often playing make-believe much to her father’s chagrin. she believed in all things fantastical from fairies to mermaids and while pierre tried to stifle those thoughts, they stubbornly remained.
even through her teenage years she’s held onto the firm belief that barbie lore is real. no one knows if she actually believes that or if it’s all of the drugs and her love for the movies getting to her head, but when confronted about it she will always be adamant that it’s a legitimate form of history.
speaking of history, her concept of it is slightly skewed?? def has weird beliefs of what communists are?? like you’re an android user??? suddenly she thinks you’re a communist????
tbh you could probably tell her something about anything and she’ll believe you without a hint of doubt. research?? she dunno her!! you could say the moon is a government con-job and she’d think it’s a fact??? super gullible and it’s a mess
i guess now would be a good time to preface that she’s dumb. stupid. an idiot. the list goes on but when i say she’s lacking brain cells… i mean it. the definition of head empty, she probably has a bunch of rocks where her brain should be sdfgh. but really, she can be innovative when she wants to be but academically she just doesn’t care to do well. in high school she ditched classes more often than not and was probably the kid smoking under the bleachers.
but where she lacks in intelligence she makes up for in brawn??? def the brawn over brains type who was a jock in high school. competed for her school’s equestrian team but also was on the fencing and archery teams. she once begged to be put into archery lessons after seeing the princess diaries 2 and fencing just came along not too soon after. she also used to run track and play soccer but those two sports ended after her senior year of high school although she probably still plays for the steinhardt’s intermurral league as well as any athletic competitions her sorority, tri-zeta ( zeta zeta zeta ) enters.
definitely the jack of all trades type except she’s passable at a whole bunch of things but good at none of them. probably can change a tire but it’ll need to be changed again soon. can bake a cake but it’ll be a little dry. the list goes on. she’s just very curious and picks up a lot of things but gets bored of them easily so she changes to the next thing.
okay i know i said she could bake a cake but she really…can’t. like with supervision she probably could but she’s impulsive and following directions for that many ingredients??? impossible. she just gets tempted to toss everything into a bowl and wing it and she does that every time. she can however make rice krispy treats. especially if they’re suppose to be edibles dfghj. but ya, don’t ask her to cook bc she can. not.
a stoner and overall drug connoisseur, she’s probably most known for being that kid who forgets to bring their backpack to class but don’t worry!! she remembered her juul!! has a collection of juuls on her person at all times. definitely that party girl who shows up hungover to class whenever she did bother to show up.
calls herself an entrepreneur because she used to sell edibles and other drug-related things and definitely was that tweet where she would give discounts if you signed an environmental petition or went to a protest.
has never said no to a dare EVER. you name it and she’ll do it. and if you dare her to drink cow titty milk or eat a piece of meat she’ll do it but it just makes you a dick dfghj
gets bored easily and tends to lash out and do something chaotic because of it?? the type to spontaneously light a couch on fire because she felt like it. a mild pyromaniac who once learned how to make a molotov cocktail. she can’t do it well. at all. but the one time she did try was also the same day she realized what a dumpster fire looked like.
i’m also not saying she’s out here to ruin your life for her own whims but like home girl has ZERO boundaries for anything. if you want to say she was a homewrecker in a past relationship??? honestly full send because it probably was her. morally she’s chaotic neutral and doesn’t care to be good or evil, she just wants to live her life of chaos and whatever happens happens. it should also be noted that she’s selfish. she puts herself first and others second always.
god someone pls try to start a fight with her. she’d either pat you on the head and ignore you OR go feral and just…foam at the mouth and bite you. probably claims to have gingervitis which is where she like…sprays vegan whip cream into her mouth and just… attacks you. for fun.
WOW ALMOST FORGOT but she’s a big larper!!! loves to go to the ones that are historical-esque where she can be an elf ( because she has a collection of elf ear tips dfghjk ) and acts as a knight/ranger by using her ACTUAL fencing, archery, and equestrian skills. she learned sindarin ( elvish ) for this but also she’s a big lord of the rings fan in general so it just worked out. her character’s storyline is her acting as her cousin, taay’s, protector but she has been known to enroll in a few competitions regarding any of her three skills.
currently selling moonshine alongside her roommates of trap zeta ( also known as the residents of the moonshine & roses subplot ) and so if you saw her running around with stolen pressure cookers, that is why !! making your own alcohol is illegal, but selling it??? even worse so they only sell it to trusted customers and anyone vetted by their usual customers. they probably have secret passwords and shit just like the prohibition period.
speaking of trap zeta, with the exception of fraternities on greek row, they throw the biggest parties. their jungle juice??? fire AND strong but also, they keep it in like....these dispensing chugs with a key so the only ones with access to fill them up or trap zeta themselves. they also have a stripper pole ( or two ) around their living room so like...ya get lit, get twisted, go off ig.
let it be known that their sorority, tri-zeta, is actually known for their stellar amount of community service but after the residents of trap zeta moved in together their sophomore year, the rep for partying started to increase and that’s why the home of muse 46-50 is nicknamed trap zeta. reese has probably been sent to standards way too many times and only got in and is still in bc her mother is a very generous alumni of steinhardt’s chapter of tri-zeta.
a broadcast communications major, she’s a social media intern for steinhardt’s barstool page but most importantly has a whole tik tok account alongside her roommates dedicated to their college antics. think the hype house except it’s not pg-13 dancing and rly just their crackhead, drunk antics. might eventually make a playlist of tik tok’s that are probably posted on their account, we’ll see.
okay so you know the whole exposing of secrets from last semester??? reese doesn’t usually get mad but rn she Big Mad. like not only are they be scrutinized by the dean but their sorority is too and suddenly tensions are high between tri-zeta bc if trap zeta gets caught they all suffer and their chapter will be shut down and it’ll be a whole ass mess. atm she suspects their customers and even their somewhat rivals, the drug dealers of the ludes plot, but does she suspect anyone from the house??? no not rly
you can find her  stats page here and a wc page here
you can also find her pinterest board here
i also have a reese playlist here and a trap zeta playlist here

THE RUN DOWN.
CHILDHOOD;
Cooper was born August Levi Cooper to Elizabeth and Maxwell Cooper on April 2nd twenty-three years ago in Salinas, CA.
His siblings like to refer to him as the family’s April fools surprise.
One reason being is he was very much an accident. The plan was always 3 biological and 3 adopted children. A large loving family blended with those born from blood and those from the heart.
While Cooper was unexpected, he never felt it growing up. A family consisting of nine different personalities is bound to have disputes and there have been a lot over the years, but they’ve always loved each other deeply. Family was important, a top priority always, and Coop grew up surrounded by love.
As a kid, he was always going a mile a minute. Always jabbering on, always into something. His mother, Elizabeth, never seemed to mind. If anything she embraced it using a somewhat free range approach to raising her children. She let them do as they pleased as long as they practiced reflection and responsibility after. The consequences were theirs whatever decisions were made.
So if he wanted to take apart the toaster, fine. He had to put it back together. If not? He would be working to pay for a new one. Want to stay up all night watching anime? Fine. If he fell asleep and failed his quiz the next day? The tv was gone.
It was a process for Cooper, who multiple teachers recommended that he take some form of medication for his outbursts and inability to follow directions without being distracted or derailing the entire class. His mother refused, but she did begin to focus on helping him regulate and make better choices.
Did it work? Eh. But he managed to scrape by.
But where he lacked impulse control, Cooper made up in kindness. He always the first to volunteer to help, whether it involved the teacher or another student. He’d give away  his lunch money to someone he thought needed it or sit with the kids that seemed alone, talking their heads off about the latest thing he saw on late night tv.
He was the kind of kid you dreaded and loved all at once and if you ask him, he’ll tell you his childhood was a wonderful thing.
Some highlights include, starting Karate at age 5. Martial arts was one, if not the only way, to really get Cooper to slow down and focus. It was and still is a passion for him. He earned his black belt by age 9, his second degree by 11, and his 3rd by 14, making him one of the youngest in the county to have a 3rd degree blackbelt.
Began learning Japanese at age seven. It started as self teaching, but eventually his parents brought in a tutor.
ADOLESCENCE;
As he hit his preteen years, Cooper began to play sports. Soccer was his poison of choice and he was good...but some of the other kids found him to be odd. He was the youngest of seven, so there were always jokes made about the rag tag crew or about how he spent more time talking about japanese cartoons, comics and superheroes than he did the sport or the usual topics. Small, he was picked at, but Cooper? He never really noticed.
He was the butt end of jokes, but always the first to laugh. He was confident, even then, that the things his ‘friends’ did were often in good fun and never to take advantage of him or be malicious. Even when his trips to the principal's office became more frequent and his detentions began to pile up, he insisted things were fine. He was loyal and they just had different ways of showing their friendship to him.
He was sixteen when a new kid moved to town and his friends turned their attention to him. Coop thought they were looking to welcome him into the fold, he was a bit quiet, always reading, kinda awkward, but the more time they spent with him, the more Cooper started to notice the shit way they were treating him. The jokes they had used on Cooper, they were funny to him, but this kid? Not so much. It didn’t take long before he began to see their relationship with this kid and their relationship with him? They weren’t harmless and in one very explosive day, Cooper not only stood up for the kid, but may have broken his best friend’s jaw.
He was ousted from the soccer team. Fine. He needed new friends. Fine. He had one and that was fine with him. He took it all in stride. Stayed confident and though he had a nasty mark on his record, his parents were proud he finally stood up for himself and someone else. In the end, his dad able to make it go away, but still.
That summer, on a mission to be his own man and less of a sheep, he began frequenting the local game shop. He’d play in the pokemon league, try out various boardgames and chill. It became a home away from home and where he met Callum ‘Goodie’ Goodrich, the closest person to a little brother he’s ever had.
They started as rivals, which some might consider odd considering the age difference, but Coop respected the kid and his skill. It was never an angry or aggressive thing. Goodie had a sense of humor and Coop was too easy going and before long they were exchanging tips and just hanging out for the sake of hanging out.
When things began to get rough for Goodie, Cooper didn’t ask. It wasn’t his business, but he began to notice a change...so he began inviting Goodie home for dinners, hang out sessions, etc. His family didn’t mind, if anything they enjoyed having him around and soon Goodie became an honorary Cooper.
In the three years that followed, Cooper juggled a lot of different things. He began helping at his dojo as well as the local animal shelter and his partying streak started up.
At eighteen, he was granted access to the ‘family ranch’, his parents attempting to let their children get whatever they needed out of their system. Rather than sneak around and drink or smoke or fuck, the ranch was available. It was a risk, especially for his father, a judge, but as loving and great as his family was? Their moral code wasn’t quite in line with the rest of society. His father had no qualms as long as they had some common sense. Were there hiccups? Yes. But they managed. There were six before him, so by the time Cooper came around, they knew what guidelines to lay down.
It was wild year, definitely one of the most fun he’d ever had. His grades though? They suffered. School wasn’t exactly top priority and to him, that was fine. Why did a bunch of numbers have to dictate his life?
It wasn’t until he decided he wanted to help animals for a living did he realize good grades were probably a good thing. But by then it was too late to get in anywhere prestigious. Which was fine. He made his bed and he was quick to figure something else out.
He decided on taking a gap year so he doubled down on volunteering and started learning aikido while continuing his partying and hanging with Goodie.
Or at least until he disappeared. One day he just...stopped coming in. Cooper figured he was sick or just rough off, but when he couldn’t get in touch with him, he genuinely began to worry. He even went as far to check the news...and saw the headline. It hit him hard and his dad, despite being in the court system, had no info. That whole summer, he had to just, keep checking out the shop and hope he’d run into him. But as the days went on, it became clear his friend was gone… hopefully to some situation that was much better.
Cooper finished up the summer and went off to school the next August.
TWENTIES;
Not that he went far. He spent four years at a college between his home town and Dayton, CA. Phaedra, his grandmother, and his grandfather helped him pay for his schooling so he began visiting Dayton during the summer. He spent most of it in Salinas but he’d spend a few weeks in Dayton.
His time in Dayton was mostly spent helping Phaedra or working at the local shelter. But by the time he hit 21, partying was added to that roster.
One bachelor’s degree and a certificate later and here he is. Vet school is something he’s thought about but his grandfather passed away last year and Phaedra needed some assistance with the house.
So while she’s off jet setting to ease the pain, Cooper’s taking responsibility for the upkeep of her Dayton home. He has no clue about home repair, but he’s more than happy to squat, make sure she’s not robbed and start work in a town that’s always kept him hype.

Survey #477
“hell doesn’t want them  /  hell doesn’t need them  /  hell doesn’t love them”
Which breed of dog do you find most scary? I'm not scared of them personally, but the sheer potential of the Tibetan mastiff is terrifying. I mean the thing hunts bears. What’s the secret to your success? What success? Do you keep any photos in your wallet? Yes, of some of my nieces and nephews. I need to organize my wallet and get all of them... Would you ever wear a white tuxedo? Eek, I think white wouldn't look good on me. I'd wear a black one, though. Do you prefer brown or white bread? Brown/wheat. Have you ever spent an entire day in bed? Ohhhh yes. I did that for years, literally until yesterday. I used to do everything in my bed. Now I've finally moved into the spare room when I'm on my laptop. Don’t you just find it annoying when people get too much plastic surgery? No? Do what you want with your body, boo. Whose birthday is next, out of all the people you know? My boyfriend's. Do you have embarrassing parents? Dad can be embarrassing. What’s something that really matters to you? My mental health. Tell me something interesting about one of your close relatives: Uhhh. I'm blanking. I'm not really close to my extended family. Do you like the smell of freshly-mown grass? NO NO NO I HATE IT. If given the opportunity, would you employ a monkey-servant? Absofuckinglutely not. That's horrible animal abuse. Do you get a lot of earwax (don’t be shy)? Yes. It's partially why I got wax adhered to my eardrums: I was pushing too much back with using q-tips too much. Do you find green eyes attractive? Very. Who depends on you the most? My pets. Would you ever donate a kidney to anyone, and who? My mother comes to mind absolutely instantly, given she only has one kidney. Can you really be racist to a white person? It's possible to be racist towards any race... I've never understood this question. What was the first website you made an account on? I want to say Neopets. Do you listen to any podcasts? No. I'd love to listen to Mark, Bob, and Wade's, I'm just so bad with keeping up with podcasts. I've tried. Do you prefer long or short surveys? Long ones, if you couldn't tell. I combine surveys for a reason: I'd be spamming the FUCK out this place otherwise. Do you enjoy making YouTube videos or just watching? Watching. I miss making them honestly, but I just don't have the motivation to dedicate to even a short project. When I edited videos, I was VERY slow at it, and I just don't wanna invest the time anymore. Do you think vlogging in public is scary? I would be MORTIIFED. I don't know how some people can do it so confidently. Would you want to be in a collab channel on YouTube? I could see myself having a gaming channel where I was either with a friend or s/o. It'd be fun, like chilling on the couch and just chatting while playing. Not trying to be funny or anything, just... chillin'. Some people (myself included) enjoy that content. Have you been to an escape room? Was it a success? I haven't, but it'd be cool. Have you ever recorded a cover of a song? No. Do you prefer hoodies or sweaters more during the autumn? Hoodies. What's the best Halloween costume you had as a kid? I don't remember. Does family come to your home for the holidays, or do you go to theirs? We go to my older sister's place. Have you been diagnosed with CoVid-19 since the pandemic began? Not yet, but I'm getting tested Friday. How often do your pets have to visit the vet? Venus, essentially never unless she has a serious issue. Reptile doctors aren't very available here. Roman has only been to the vet once to get neutered. And I think his shots? How many times have you been in the hospital in your lifetime thus far? A good number of times. Cheese-Itz. Cheese Balls, Goldfish, or Cheetos? Ohhh, I think I have to go with Goldfish, but I like them all, save or Cheese Balls. Have you ever made your own trail mix before? What did you put in it? No. What is your favorite thing to eat alongside peanut butter? Chocolate. Do your pets sleep on the furniture or in their own pet beds? Venus is obviously in her terrarium, usually sleeping behind her water bowl. Roman always sleeps in my bed snuggling me. :') If you have dogs, how often do you take them for walks? We don't have a dog. Does anything on your body cause you chronic pain? Any chronic illnesses? Yes, my legs. I have chronic mental illnesses for sure. What is your favorite Thanksgiving food? Just rolls, ha ha. I'm not a fan of Thanksgiving food in general. Would you prefer cake or pie as a birthday treat? Cake; I don't like pie. What is something annoying about the person you like/love? Nothing he does really annoys me. What is something that makes you feel old? My knees and energy level in general, ha ha. And how early I can go to sleep nowadays. When's the last time you experienced a panic attack? Over what? Hm... I don't like to abuse the term panic attack, so I'm not entirely sure. I'm definitely familiar with them, but shit's gotta be pretty extreme for me to consider it a genuine panic attack and not an anxiety attack. Which professions do you feel deserve the highest amount of pay? Probably surgeons. Do you donate to a specific charity or cause on an annual basis? No, but I desperately wish I could. :/ What's the highest amount of money you received in a card? I want to say $300? My paternal grandpa was way, WAY too generous. Like seriously, I think the dude met my sisters and me ONCE. I really do wish I'd taken up Dad's offers to go to Michigan with him before he passed away. I only turned it down because he didn't have WiFi, which is a horrible, selfish excuse. I wanted to know him better. Did you get any scholarships or grants towards your education? I think? Have you ever wondered what your pets are saying to you? Roman? ALL the time, especially because when I talk to him, he usually answers in his own kind of meow. It's adorable. Have you ever had to turn someone in before? For what? No. Describe a time where one of your parents embarrassed you. Oh my goddddd. When Dad was helping me take care of my laptop when it was broken, he was consistently SO rude to the employees, convinced they were trying to scam him into paying more money. Which they certainly weren't. I wanted to DIE when we were in that store. Do you prefer grapes, raisins, or prunes? Grapes. The other two are gross. Have you ever had a party when your parents weren't home? No. What is something that irks you about your sibling(s)? Nothing. They're wonderful women. If you get married, will you take your spouse's last name? Yes, please get rid of my last name. Do you still eat Lunchables as an adult? Hell yeah, man. What's your favorite comfort food? Ice cream. If you had to work in a store, which would you choose, and why? An actually good pet store. Not a chain one that gets their pets from breeding farms and doesn't know jack shit about the animals. You won't ever see me adopt a pet, especially a reptile, from places like PetSmart and Petco. They are so goddamn ignorant. Hell, I'd probably be willing to work with people if I was an employee in a proper pet store, because I'd be so excited about the animals and helping them get adopted into homes that will suit and treat them well. If you were a teacher, which subject would you teach? English or science. Do you spend a lot of time outdoors in the summer? Hell no, I HATE summer. Do you have a desk in your room? Not my bedroom, no, but in the spare room/my "office," I do. I've finally moved into there to get out of my bed except for sleeping. I'll tell you, my back sure hurts, though. What did your favorite backpack in high school look like? Yo, I had the COOLEST Ouija board backpack. The zipper was even a planchette. Do you wear band tees? Of course. Frosting: chocolate or vanilla? Chocolateeeee. Ice cream: chocolate or vanilla? Depends on my mood. Do you drink protein shakes? No, I can't stand the taste. What is the highest name-brand thing you own? Nothing unrealistically expensive. What color GameBoy did you have as a kid? Red. What was your favorite GameBoy game? Man, I can't pick! My sisters and I had a whole lot. Do you have a PayPal account? No. Would you be interested in building a water feature for a garden? If *I* wasn't the one building it, sure, ha ha. A koi pond would be amazing. Do you consider the letter "Y" a consonant or a vowel? I see it as a consonant, but I know it can be a vowel. Pick a side, Y. Would you rather wear a tie or a bowtie? Hm, idk. Which birds are most common around your neighbourhood? Sparrows or robins? Idk. Are you the kind of person to look at accident sites, when passing them by? Admittedly, yes. Morbid curiosity is real. Have you ever seen a polydactyl cat? Only online. Are there any languages you could try to work out what some words mean? A good deal of German, probably. What is your dearest stuffed animal that you own? Why is that? My stuffed moose Brownie, which I got from Cabela's in Ohio. I cuddled him every night as a kid for MANY years. He's on my shelf now. <3 Have you ever had to try to pronounce words that have letters with umlauts? That's common in German, so. Are you more an Eeyore, a Piglet, or a Tigger? I'm Eeyore and Piglet's child. Name something awesome from another culture that is not part of yours: I'm not educated enough on other cultures to answer this, sadly. What are you grateful for NOT having? Various health conditions. What do you think is the most interesting sea creature? Man-o-wars. I mean c'mon, they have no brain. Do you currently own any teddy bears? Yeah, stored away. Have you ever caught fireflies? All the time as a little kid! My sisters and I loved that. Do you know anyone who has changed their first name? Not legally (to my knowledge), but I have a number of trans friends who have. Do you know anyone who has been on life support, and survived? No. At least, I don't think so. Do your parents have a strong relationship together? Holy fuck no. What was the last necklace you wore? It was my bottlecap one with the Halo of the Sun from Silent Hill 3 as the center. If there was such a thing as a mental health first aid kit, what would you want to be in it? Can it only be physical items? If that's the case, gimme a bit of candy, some money for a tattoo, a Mountain Dew, a new meerkat plushie to cuddle, a weighted blanket... Stuff like that.

  Welcome to “8 Questions with…..”
Today is a little bittersweet for me. With this interview of the very talented Christina Johnson,my series of “Women In Horror Month” ends. I got to chat with six amazing actresses who really impressed us with their love of horror and being fearless in doing some seriously fun and creepy things just to scare the fur off of your head!! Now how can you go wrong with such nice people willing to go the extra mile just for that one scare?? Take our next guest, the lovely Christina Johnson. Christina hasn’t made a couple of horror films, she is a bonafide horror veteran with 11 movies under her belt. That is true dedication to a most worthy genre,am I right? Christina is one of the most interesting people I have talked with as of late and she wasn’t shy about talking about her craft, her family and her love for all things Disney. She also loves to cosplay and while I was kicking myself about not asking Christina about that,it also occured to me that its something I can ask her when we chat again. (Pretty smooth how I did that, right?) But for now let me step aside and let Christina have her say as she answers her 8 Questions…..
Please introduce yourself and tell us about your current project.
I’m Christina and I’m an actress. I’m from a small town in Northern California and I’ve been living in LA for about 7 years now. I’ve been acting for over a decade and really excited about this year and what’s to come. Currently I just booked a supporting role in a horror film. This will be my 11th horror film and very different from ones I’ve done in the past. It’s the same production company, Poche Pictures, that I’ve been working with on and off for a decade. They have become great friends and the most amazing supporters. I’m very excited to collaborate with them once more. I also just booked a role in the Renaissance Faire. I’m apart of their Pub Crawl Cast and very excited. I’ve always wanted to be apart of this faire and now I get to!
What was life in your house like growing up? What are three of your favorite memories growing up?
My childhood was amazing. My family are the greatest people on Earth and I wouldn’t be where I am without their love and support. I have great parents that have been together for over 35 years, and wonderful younger siblings that never made my childhood dull. There are so many great memories to choose from but if I have to be limited to just three then my first one is when we picked out our first family dog. I was the one who found the “puppies for sale” in the newspaper (yes the newspaper. We didn’t have internet at the house just yet) and it was love at first sight. He was a beautiful beagle that become family in an instant. He has since passed away but he started the trend to always having dogs in the house. There are now 2 small mutts that live with my parents today and I love them to death.
My second memory would be our Bucket List Trip to Hawaii. I was blessed with many family vacations and trips and it’s hard to just pick one but this trip was amazing. We got to experience things that we never could dream of. I went zip lining for the first time, we rode mules to the Kalaupapa Leper Colony on Molokai and lots more. That’s the last big family trip we’ve taken and it was over 5 years, which is crazy to think about. I miss those family trips.
My last memory is opening night of my high school play that I was in when I was a senior. I got the lead role and this would be the first time that my family had ever seen me act. The feeling of having everyone there that I loved so dearly see me act was unimaginable. That was when I knew that this is what I wanted to do and my family has supported me 100% ever since.
How did you end up at UC Irvine? What was your experience like there?
For one, I didn’t have to audition to get into the drama program. I don’t know if they’ve changed that, but 10 years ago you didn’t need to audition. You just got in. Secondly, it was 15 minutes away from Disneyland and I’m a Disney freak. I’ve been going to the parks since I was one years old and I really wanted to work there as a face character. Unfortunately, my school work and part-time job didn’t give me the time to even audition.
My experience was pretty positive. I did transfer as a Junior from my local Junior College so many people had a leg up on me. Many of my teachers were fabulous and I made friendships that have lasted 10 years. I will say that their Graduate Student Program is more immersive and would highly recommend it. When you go see one of their plays or musicals, most of the time, the same graduate students will be cast as the leads again and again. It’s a little hard for a transfer to be cast in their shows but the shows are pretty amazing. I was the light technician for their production of The Book of Tink. It’s a crazy and different version of Peter Pan that I will never forget and hopefully get to be in one day.
What led you to becoming a actress? What was the reaction of your friends and family?
I have always loved creating stories and being characters. I would create story upon story with my Barbie dolls when I was a kid, and whenever I went to the movies I would take on my favorite character when I got home. I love being different people and telling their stories to others. As I started to grow up, I actually wanted to become a Veterinarian because I loved animals. However, the thought of putting a dog down or losing one on the operating table along with having to do science classes for years, I decided not to be a Vet my sophomore year of High School. One of my friends, convinced me to take the acting class and after the first day I was hooked. I knew that this is what I wanted to do.
My family were a little shocked when I told them because I was a very shy teen. I think they were also afraid that I wanted to enter an industry that will eat you up and spit you out and has no real sense of security. However, after they saw me get the lead role in my first play ever they thought a wee bit differently. They helped me get my B.A. in Drama from UC Irvine and have been my biggest supporters.
Have you encountered any scammers while Hollywood? Promises of big things but they never become reality? How can a young artist protect themselves?
I have encountered quite a bit of scammers in Hollywood. It’s worse, I believe, for young actresses trying to make it because the men will promise you a lot in exchange for sexual favors. About 5 years ago, I was a cast member in LA’s Haunted Hayride and there was an older male cast member that become infatuated with me. I wasn’t interested in him romantically at all, I only wanted his friendship. He insisted that he could get me this role and that role and the lead in a TV series if only I would be his girlfriend. Long story short, I said no and haven’t spoken to him or seen him in years.
I think young artists, especially females, have to be careful. You really have to trust your gut and if someone doesn’t seem trustworthy or they only want something sexual from you, then say no and move on. I know it’s hard when all we want is a chance and this person comes along and you think all your dreams will come true. I’ve been there a few times and each time ended with me walking away. Just trust your gut and if something seems off, then it usually is. Also ask around about people. Word of mouth is gold in this town and usually someone will have worked with whomever you have doubts about.
How important is a good manager to a actor? How did you meet yours and how has it benefitted you?
A good manager is someone you believes in you, supports you and wants you to succeed and is very important to an actor. Too many managers and agents will convince you to sign with them and then won’t do anything for you or your career. It’s hard to judge sometimes and just having an agent or manager on your resume sounds amazing, but you can’t just sign with anybody. They are working for you and you have to choose someone that will have your best interests at heart and someone who will work with you. I love my manager. I’ve only been with her since November but we have a great relationship and she got me my first big pilot audition in January. She also is helping me expand myself and my brand in order to advance my career. I was blessed enough that my acting teacher recommended me to her. I just sent her an email saying so-an-so recommended me to you, here is my packet and then we had a meeting and I was signed. Amazingly that’s how it usually happens.
Tell us about your award winning film “The Sandman”. How did you get involved and what was your experience like in shooting it?
The Sandman was an amazing project to be apart of. I have known the director for a decade and he brought me onto the project. It’s the same production company of the horror film I just booked, Poche Pictures. I love working with this company and feel blessed to still be apart of their projects. The Sandman was a different kind of role for me because I’ve never played a nun before especially one that harbors a dark side within her. I’m not going to spoil the twist, so you’ll just have to go watch it. As for the award, I didn’t even know that Richard Poche submitted the film for the American Golden Picture International Film Festival. I randomly saw that I won Best Supporting Actress when he posted it on Facebook. I was shocked to say the least but was extremely grateful. The only other award that I’ve gotten for acting was from my High School which was pretty cool. I didn’t know I was submitted for that either! It’s funny how the world works. All in all, I had a fabulous time on set and look forward to future projects with Poche Pictures, and hopefully another award.
What three things about horror films appeals to you?
One thing is all the supernatural elements that can happen. I’ve dealt with ghosts, zombies, more zombies and vampires and it’s fun to battle these creatures. When I started doing horror films, I was a victim most of the time. I rarely survived which made dying become an art form for me. I’ve died by ghost possession, eaten by a zombie, bitten by a vampire and risen as one and then shot with silver bullets, and much more. I can say that I play dead easily because I’ve done it so often. Another thing is lately I’ve played the villain which I have a blast with. I love having that power and control in a character. It’s nice to play the bad guy after playing the victim for so long.
What scares you?
I think the big thing is failure. Being apart of this business, you get rejected a lot and you have to come to terms with that. I’m afraid that I won’t make it in this career and have to settle for something that drains my soul. I know that sounds dark, but so many of us can’t fathom doing anything but act or sing or dance or write. I’ve had to take 9-to-5 jobs because of finances and, though I make money and I’m good at it, it’s not what I want to do. This, acting, is my dream and the thought that I might not make it breaks my heart. That’s what scares me the most.
How did you get your SAG-AFTRA card?
I got my SAG-AFTRA card pretty easily. I was taft hartleyed into a AFTRA industrial about 9 years ago and I joined AFTRA shortly after. All you had to do to join AFTRA was pay the fee to join and then quarterly membership fees. You didn’t have to get 3 vouchers for AFTRA. This was a year before the companies merged. When they did, everyone who was AFTRA just become SAG. We thankfully didn’t have to pay an extra joining fee or get vouchers, we just were merged with SAG. I feel very blessed to not have had to go through the stress of getting vouchers and paying the $3,000 fee to join.
Do you feel now that Harvey Weinstein has been convicted of sex crimes, will Hollywood become a safer place to work or will it become business as usual?
I think Hollywood is changing because of the Me Too movement and Harvey Weinstein. It’s been long over due and I’m glad that these crimes are coming to light finally. I do think that some people are using it to just destroy reputations and make money, and unfortunately that takes away the power of the true victims and what they’ve gone through. I am glad though that woman and diversity are coming into play but it still is taking too long to truly change the system. It’s coming along just not at the pace I think we all want.
What do you like to do for fun when you’re not on location?
I love being with family and taking the time to recharge and relax. I love to read, watch films (I go to the movies a lot), play with my 2 beautiful fur babies, explore LA, hang out with friends, go hiking, collaborate with fellow actors and filmmakers to create projects that are close to our hearts, and just do the things I want to do. I’m a homebody and a bit of an introvert so staying at home is wonderful to me. One of my favorite past times it tarot card reading. I’ve always had a fascination with Wicca and witchcraft and find enjoyment doing tarot cards. I actually have an Etsy store, Magick Vale, where I sell readings and help people to the best of my abilities.
Old Zoo Picnic Area in Griffith Park
The cheetah and I are flying over to watch your latest film but we are a day early and now you are playing tour guide, what are we doing?
Since we are in the City of Angels, there are plenty of things to do. Universal Studios and Disneyland are my go to amusement parks, especially Disneyland. I used to have annual passes for both which I miss greatly. If we wanted to see nature, Griffith Park is a great place to hike and going to the Old Zoo is always creepy and fascinating. I live in the Valley and there are some great places to eat like Craving Board, Ike’s Sandwiches, Gus’s Fried Chicken, Tipsy Cow, The Woodman, The One-up and Dojo Sushi. There are so many things to do in LA that it’s kinda hard to condense into one paragraph. Needless to say we wouldn’t have a boring day and I would show you have awesome the Valley truly is.

I like to thank Christina for taking the time to chat with me. I’m looking forward to watching her films in the near future. She is a another example of what hard work and a good get it done set of ethics can do. I believe Christina and all the actresses who did our “Women In Horror” series bring a lot to a project and we’ll be seeing their faces more and more.
But if you can’t wait and want to see what Christina is up too,you can follow her through her personal website. Inside her site you’ll find links to her other social media pages as well as her IMDb page.
I had a real blast interviewing the actresses in my “Women In Horror Month” series and am looking forward to doing it again next year. What I’m really happy about is I was able to interview everyone who responded (and had films released). Thank you all so much for supporting Christina and her peers by reading these interviews.

Analysis: Is Higher Ed Ready for the Tech Expectations of the Teens of 2022?
One overused catchphrase in education is that learning should be “student-centered.” But what if we took that to its logical conclusion and also made it the goal of our education technology predictions?
We’d need to consider not just what technology products students are exposed to in the classroom, but also across the rest of their lives. Especially if those students are teens, within sight of leaving K-12 and moving into higher education.
Yes, teens. Messy, motivated, tech-drenched 15 year-olds, the high school sophomores of today who will be entering college or the workforce in 2022, a mere three years from now. Not quite enough time for our robot overlords to overtake us, but both distant and soon enough to make us wonder.
What will these teens expect of tech based on their current experiences? You can extrapolate by drawing converging lines from K-12 education technology and home consumer technology to see how they might overlap and intersect. Those interactions look a lot different than just evaluating consumer or edtech trends in isolation.
The Cloudscape: Floating in a Sea of 1s and 0s
For background, just consider the previous decade of their lives. They went into first grade when Apple was rolling out the first iPad, in 2010. A year later, in their second grade, Google launched the first Chromebooks. This means they know a K-12 where the promise of mobile 1:1 school computing is becoming a reality.
More important, these kids are way beyond the tired term “digital natives.” If you want to be picky about it, there’s no one under the age of 30 who has not grown up with the internet. After all, the first web browser—Netscape Navigator—was introduced in 1993, when today’s three-decade-old adult was in preschool.
The 15-year-old today is more a sibling of cloud computing, of apps that are available from any screen, of mobile devices in many sizes and form factors that go beyond last century’s laptops. Being connected, as is required to get iPads and Chromebooks up and running, is assumed.
Two other external factors also are at play in this teen-centric cloudscape.
First is the evolving nature of education technology. It’s hard to make a case that there is still a separate edtech industry. Nearly every education “product” that a teen or teen’s teacher touches today has either a digital component or alternative. It’s not like 40 years ago in the late 1970s when a single Apple II in the back of the classroom had explorers endlessly dying of dysentery on the Oregon Trail.
Second is the reality of what I call tech compression. There used to be a much greater separation between the worlds of consumer technology and education technology. It was, in essence, a time lag: a consumer tech product would be introduced and, if worthy, it would be about a decade before that product would start showing up in classrooms in any numbers.
There was a very obvious downside. Any student or educator walking into a tech-lagged classroom effectively stepped back in time when they entered. But the less-appreciated upside was that this slowness of centralized school evaluation and procurement could help prevent mis-purchases, of buying into a fad. The consumer market got to do the vetting before a shipment ever arrived at a district loading dock.
However, this lag began to erode when the rise of cloud computing made it possible for edtech startups to flood the market with educational applications, the expansion of broadband internet gave those apps an easy distribution channel into campuses, and an increasing number and variety of mobile devices provided them an in-school abode. Not just that, but outside of schools tech was increasingly pervasive and familiar. Add to that multiple avenues of adoption—that is, teachers bringing in tech, not just the central district office—and the tech lag compressed.
What had once been a decade from consumer introduction to classroom adoption shrank to two-to-three years. If that.
The protective effect of the earlier delay in preventing fad purchases may now be largely gone. But at the same time, teachers and teens can now walk into many schools seamlessly, with their powerful consumer tech intact. This isn’t true in all schools, especially in hard-to-cheaply-connect rural areas, despite loudly touted progress. Though EducationSuperhighway estimated last October that 40.7 million new students have been connected to high-speed access since 2013, and 98 percent of school districts now meet the Federal Communications Commission’s 100 kpbs/student goal for internet access, there remain 2.3 million more students left to connect.
In October 2018, 40.7 million more students have access to high-speed internet than did in 2013, for a total of 44.7 million students. Source: EducationSuperHighway
So today’s 15-year-olds are floating in a cloud of digital support infrastructure, suspended a bit more firmly outside of school but not necessarily flat on their faces on campus anymore, either.
What edtech and consumer trends will be significant for when a teen leaves high school?
A trend, in this case, is a series of crossover developments that have staying power. It doesn’t have to be dominant today, but it needs to show the ability to persist, grow and not be a transient fad. It should also be supported by data and demonstrable behaviors.
Let’s pick three. Not the only three, but a significant three, for three years from now.
Source: Futuresource Consulting
1. Chromebooks, Windows 10, and Apple (uh oh)
The rise of Chromebooks will come as no surprise to anyone who has followed the intense increase in popularity of the inexpensive notebooks in classrooms. In 2017—the last full year for which it publicly released numbers—Futuresource Consulting estimated that Chromebooks had 58.3 percent of new mobile computing device shipments in U.S. K-12 education, a number that’s been rising since 2013 and has been above 50 percent every year since 2015. Reported percentages for quarters in 2018 appear to be similar.
District officials I’ve spoken with love the centralized cloud management and the low price points (usually $200-300) that allows them to afford, as one put it, “spares.”
This Chrome OS share, of course, has made Microsoft angry. And determined. Outside of the U.S., Futuresource stats show Windows had 62.6 percent of the K-12 mobile computing shipment market in 2017, a percentage that’s been relatively stable for several years. But in the U.S., it was only 21.6 percent in 2017, and has been just north of 20 percent every year since 2015. Microsoft has countered by working with partners over the past two years to introduce sub-$300 Windows 10 devices into the U.S., and its own Surface Go device specifically aimed at the K-8 student market.
The big loser in this battle? Apple. The early rise of the iPad peaked in 2012-13 at about 40 percent of shipments. By the end of 2017, iOS was below 15 percent. Admittedly, this is new shipments only, not installed base. But with more high school students being exposed to an increasing number of Chromebooks first, and Windows 10 devices second, this presents a challenge to Apple.
Our 15-year-olds may have less affinity for pricey Apple computing hardware by the time they get to college.
One exception: upscale wearables and headphones. Moving to today’s consumer market, tech buyers are shifting to more functional and expensive fitness devices, and it’s here where Apple shines. A different Futuresource report notes Apple is the largest connected watch vendor with 20 million units shipped in 2018, followed by Fitbit and Fossil. Apple also does well in headphones. Futuresource reported that at the end of Q4 2018, Apple AirPods dominated the “true wireless” headphone category and average selling prices for headphones overall continued to climb faster than shipments as consumers looked for more features, like wireless and noise-cancelling models.
So Apple may wind up owning teen allegiance to wearable digital accessories, even as it loses hands-on loyalty in traditional laptops and tablets.

2. Extended reality is better together
If there’s a single tech category in education where the hype is on overdrive, it’s extended reality (XR). XR is really a reality continuum: at one end is “real” reality. That’s followed by augmented reality, or digital overlays on real environments. Then there’s mixed reality, commonly (but not always) thought of as virtual objects that can be manipulated on a real background. And at the other end is virtual reality, where both the objects and environment are digital.
Despite a lot of progress at every point along this spectrum, XR is a slow-moving edtech trend. The problem is that really good, realistic XR equipment is expensive, and there is a paucity of cohesive classroom curriculum that makes use of the technology.
There are attempts to jumpstart it. ZSpace, which has played in the AR/MR part of the spectrum for several years, launched its first Windows 10 laptops integrating its technology in 2018, supporting educational activities in which students wear special untethered glasses and use a stylus to manipulate 3D objects. Microsoft, perhaps best known for its several-thousand-dollar HoloLens headset, recently made a pledge that buyers of much lower-priced Windows Mixed Reality headsets would get 25 hours of free STEM curricula. Google, Acer, Lenovo, ClassVR and many others are trying to improve the in-school experience, with Futuresource estimating there were about 20 companies at London’s Bett edtech show in January showcasing AR/VR software or hardware.
Still, the reality is extending reality costs. Today’s 15-year-olds are most likely to only have computer lab-like experiences with XR by the time they graduate. Futuresource estimates more than 15 percent of U.S. schools will have a VR “class kit” by 2021.
But what about outside of school? Some of the same hardware challenges persist. There is still a need for cheap, high-resolution, fast-refreshing, fully wireless headsets—with a wide variety of great content. Yes, hard-core gamers will buy wired or expensive headsets, as will corporate training departments (Walmart has). But as a result of the affordability-quality conundrum, many consumers are getting their first high-end experience with virtual reality in VR arcades, reflecting a trend toward location-based social VR experiences that conceptually look an awful lot like … a school computer lab.
Barring some amazing, abrupt price cuts and technology improvements, the typical XR experience of the teen entering 2022 will be less Ready Player One and more group social outing.
3. Smart speakers are an AI gateway
Source: Consumer Intelligence Research Partners
Perhaps the biggest consumer tech trend that’s virtually invisible inside the K-12 classroom today is smart speakers. But you can anticipate it will have a major impact on teen tech expectations as our very verbal artificial intelligences overwhelm homes and hotels over the next three years—and become a gateway to an entirely new tech product category.
Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) tallied the U.S. installed base of smart speakers by the end of 2018 at 66 million units, up from 36 million at the end of 2017. Of the speakers people own, Amazon Echo and its offspring are 70 percent of the installed base, Google Home is 24 percent, and Apple HomePod has 6 percent. Several market research firms track smart speakers and generally align on these proportions and the remarkable rate of growth.
In case it’s not obvious, Apple’s sole expensive HomePod isn’t doing as well as the full smart speaker families that Amazon and Google offer. Globally, according to other firms like Canalys, Apple is essentially a rounding error. Yet the number of people overall with more than one speaker has boomed: CIRP pegs it at 35 percent of owners, up from 18 percent a year ago.
While Futuresource earlier found that, as purchases of smart speakers have moved from early adopters to the mainstream, the most popular uses clustered more toward music and information. But increasingly, these speakers’ reach has also extended in a variety of ways.
Parents, for example, are being pitched the Echo Dot Kids Edition. Amazon’s Alexa Fund has invested in startups that target kids at home. One, Bamboo Learning, interactively teaches music theory and math. A second, Novel Effect, provides sound effects and background music for parents who read certain books out loud to their children at home. So even though understandable privacy concerns may keep smart speakers out of classrooms, kids at home are hearing voices for education.
Hotels and dorm rooms also are installing smart speakers as standard equipment. Amazon’s Alexa for Hospitality initiative is putting Echo Dots in several Marriott hotel brands, including Aloft, Westin, Autograph and St. Regis, complete with a list of commands they’re pre-programmed to handle. For college housing, St. Louis University is tucking Dots into every student residence after Arizona State University already did so for an engineering student residence.

Now add a screen. And when you do, you’ve edged into the territory of true virtual assistants. One Google Home Hub application in use at hotels in Las Vegas, San Francisco and New York City applies “Interpreter Mode” to provide visual and verbal real-time translation, of 27 languages, between non-English speaking hotel guests and staff.
Futuresource estimates that home consumer electronics of all kinds with built-in voice assistants shipped 119 million units worldwide in 2018. That’s expected to reach 504 million units by 2022, a compound annual growth rate of 43 percent.
While smart speakers may not be in a high school classroom for various good reasons, voice assistants are in every other part of a teen’s world. By 2022, they’re likely to be as much of a background expectation, as fast and pervasive internet access is today.
Not a straight line to the future
Taken together, just these three trends paint a different picture of what 2022’s incoming college freshman is likely to expect in tech, than just by focusing on what’s happening at the institution level.
Of course, a lot can upend even a three-year forecast. All it might take for wearables would be a major, health data-related privacy breach. It’s also not possible to predict a truly dramatic technology leap that could knock everything sideways, either by itself or in combination with a second new development, such as how smartphones and broadband internet intersected a decade ago.
But it’s instructive to focus less on the technology and where it’s used, and more on the individual that’s using tech across environments. Over the next three years, that average 15-year-old may know extended reality as a primarily social or group activity, will have less classroom exposure to Apple products, and be ready to accept smart speakers with their voice assistants as a transitional step to full virtual assistants.
And if you’re still wondering about our robot overlords and where they fit in—well, what do you think the current K-12 boom in coding is for?

Oil and water: Studying pressing environmental dilemmas in the Middle East
On a black monitor in a dusty office in MIT’s Green Building, an iceberg the width of three football fields wallows in the shallow, briny waters of the Persian Gulf — also known as the Arabian Gulf — 6,000 miles from its home.
Facing the screen is Maryam Rashed Alshehhi, a visiting assistant professor and recent doctoral graduate from the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Using advanced climate models, Alshehhi is estimating how quickly an iceberg will melt in one of the warmest regions in the world, and how existing water and wildlife, long accustomed to a parched dessert climate, will react.
The mirage-like simulation is not entirely hypothetical. Engineering firms in the UAE have recently touted plans to tow chunks of ice wrapped in plastic from Antarctica to the coast of the gulf to be used as fresh drinking water. There is perhaps no one better to vet the plan’s plausibility than Alshehhi, who in 2016 became the first United Arab Emirates national to get a PhD in earth observation and ocean color remote sensing.
Since March, Alshehhi has been working in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences’ (EAPS) Marshall Group to create the first-ever climate models of the gulf, a small body of water in an arid region where water availability and environmental standards have historically taken a back seat to rapid urbanization and oil interests.
Alshehhi comes to Cambridge, Massachusetts, as a part of a collaboration between MIT and Masdar Institute, a research-focused graduate university located in Abu Dhabi. The program, called the MIT/MI Cooperative Program, started in 2007 with the aim of strengthening the country’s research capabilities to transform its oil-based economy. Over 93 joint research projects have resulted, many focusing on sustainability issues, such as Abu Dhabi’s urban heat island effect and the nation’s growing thirst for fresh water.
“There’s really been a surge of interest in sustainability solutions in my country,” says Alshehhi. “And fresh water is one of biggest problems that we face. It’s really become the motivation for my research.”
Alshehhi grew up on the heels of the oil boom in the UAE. The second youngest of seven siblings, she was raised in Ras Al-Khaimah, a coastal city of a 345,000 or so nestled in between Dubai and the country’s easternmost tip. The explosive rise of industry in the country paved the way for her and her siblings to be the first college-educated generation in her family.
As an undergrad, she followed in one of her older sister’s footsteps, studying chemical engineering at Khalifa Institute before switching to environmental engineering during graduate studies at Masdar Institute. Oceanography, she realized once in graduate school, proved to be a challenging field of research in the UAE.
For one, collecting data in the Persian/Arabian Gulf “is not easy at all,” she says. The extreme heat, which averages 41 degrees Celsius (106 degrees Fahrenheit) during the summer, makes for painstaking fieldwork. And on numerous occasions a research vessel that Alshehhi was aboard was ordered to turn around because it was approaching another coastal country’s waters.
But more often, Alshehhi recalls the excitement of being a part of the nascent field. She contributed to the first field campaign in the gulf region that followed NASA protocol, resulting in the first data on optical oceanography in the Arabian Sea.
“I love that research like this opens your eyes to new things,” she says. “And that you’re never doing the same routine day after day.”
Alshehhi’s graduate research focused on monitoring the gulf from above, using satellite imagery to track biological life. The work produced a clearer picture into the enormous economic and ecological cost of the country’s engineering infrastructure, such as its desalination plants.
Currently, to meet fresh water demands, the country relies on 31 water desalination plants to run around the clock, purifying the equivalent of 4 billion bottles of saltwater a day. The plants pump the waste, a salty sludge, back into the gulf, resulting in steadily rising salinity levels in the gulf, threatening local fauna and marine life and causing outbreaks of algae blooms.
“These blooms then come into the dissemination plants and plug the filters, and we get a shortage of water,” Alshehhi explains. “In 2008, some plants were closed for three months, and we had a lot of issues.”
Dust storms in the region make it difficult to use conventional satellite images to detect these harmful algal blooms. Alshehhi and collaborators developed algorithms to clear the noise from these images by looking at the spectrum of satellite signals and eliminating some of the radiance of the aerosols.
The results, which are published in Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, became Alshehhi’s PhD dissertation. In 2016, Alshehhi became the first UAE national to successfully defend a doctoral thesis in her field.
Today, at MIT, Alshehhi’s work on the gulf goes beyond looking at just its surface. Together with John Marshall, EAPS Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Oceanography and expert in global ocean circulation modeling, she is creating in-depth models of the gulf using numerical and theoretical frameworks supported by field and satellite data.
The project, which is in the first of its three-year stint, will be the first record of the area’s water columns, circulation, and climate dynamics. Later on, these physical models will be overlaid with biogeochemical models to see how effects like increasing pollution, changing saline levels, and rising temperatures are influencing biological beings in the gulf.
“I’m really enjoying working with Maryam,” says Marshall. “I am learning so much from her about the Arabian Gulf and its oceanography, but also something of the people and customs of the region, and the environmental challenges they face.”
Marshall says he’s looking forward to future planned visits to the UAE, where these models will help answer unsolved questions like where the salty sludge from the desalination plants ends up, the link between the dust storm deposits and biological life, and what kind of nutrients are settling into the water — and at what depth.
“There are a lot of things that we don’t know, things we have never seen before,” says Alshehhi.
The research also comes during a time when the UAE faces some urgent environmental dilemmas. Alshehhi is hopeful her science can provide better insight into such issues, such as the safety of the first nuclear power plant under construction in Abu Dhabi, the impact from pollution left behind from the more than 100 oil tankers passing through the gulf every day, and whether an iceberg can prevent a fresh water shortfall and meet future demand.
These problems may be close to home for Alshehhi, but she stresses the broad implications of her research.
“People may look at the project like, ‘That’s a small region,’” says Alshehhi. “But if you look at the bigger picture, there are a lot of research questions that we can take out on this project. Maybe there is a new thing that we have never observed about the gulf that can be applied to a similar region.”
Alshehhi’s appointment is for a year, which means that next March, she will shed her recently purchased winter coat and boots and return home to the UAE.
“I am looking forward to going home and taking this experience with me,” she says. “It’s so important to come here and learn from experts like John and others so we can improve education and research back home.”
The snow, she adds with a laugh, makes it a little easier to leave.

What can you tell me about health insurance?
"What can you tell me about health insurance?
We live in Oregon and if you read my question about my great grand daughter, we have a very special concern.  My grand daughter had a severe allergic reaction, only 14 months old.  It was the scariest thing I have ever seen.  I love that baby so much, I would give my life for her.   I got more answers in seniors than in allergies, so am going to hang in here for your support.  I need it for awhile, to help me through this.  I have no adrenal glands, so when stress happens I am no good.   Health insurance doesn't always come with jobs anymore.  I know I am just grandma, and going a little crazy here, but what does a person do about insurance?  I will pay it for her, but I don't know where to start.  I had two answers on allergies, and it was suggested to take her up to Oregon Health Sciences University....which we will try.  I was a research patient up there in 1971 when diagnosed with a pituitary tumor and had my adrenals removed.     Any advice you can give me will be helpful.  I need to calm down and relax, but can't right now.     I just can't say in words how much I love my family.  I just don't know where to start on the health insurance.  The kids don't want to accept my help, but I think they need to.  We have the great grand daughter taken care of for now, but this can happen again.

Where can I find cheaper car insurance quotes?
I'm 17 in a few months, have a car, and have been checking insurance quotes. From my previous experience of quotes from Churchill, Quinn-Direct, Directline etc. it doesn't cost much, if at all, to insure on my provisional license with hopes of changing the policy to insure me on a full license in the future. I have got a 1997, 3 door, 5 seater, diesel peugeot 106 with a 1.6 litre engine and the best insurance quote I have recieved so far was from Quinn, but they have recently stopped insuring in the UK so I won't be able to use it when I am 17...They gave me a quote of around 800 whereas everyone else are offering me 1,500. A few questions about health insurance (recent college grad still on parent's insurance)?
I asked a similar question yesterday but realized I was a bit vague. So, here's my situation. I am a recent college grad working a job that does not offer me health insurance, and I receive excellent coverage under my parent's plan. I recently went to a job interview for a position that offers insurance, but I would have to pay a pretty large chunk of change for it monthly ($500+, which is a lot if you're working an entry-level position), and the coverage isn't nearly as good as my current plan. (For example, I currently pay $3 for a three month supply of my prescription. The new plan would charge me $30-90 for the same amount pills). I saw a clause in the Affordable Health Care Act that said I would only be able to do this after January 1st, 2014....I really wish this went into effect in 2013 instead! So, my questions are: Can I opt out of this insurance and remain on their plan? If I were to take this job and the insurance plan, would I be able to re-enroll under their plan if I stopped working at this place and worked at a place that didn't offer insurance? (I'm under 26, and my family's plan covers both my parents and another sibling)""

What can a car finance company do if you no longer have insurance?
I bought a 2004 vehicle (from CarMax) about 3 months ago. The finance company (Capital One Auto Finance) would only approve me if I started an insurance policy before I left the dealership. I did, but have since let that policy go, for different reasons. The finance company is now sending me letters to give them updated insurance info, or they may take appropriate action to protect its interest . What exactly does that mean??? All my payments have been on time, actually 2 weeks or more early. So, what can they do if I continue not to have insurance, since my payments on the vehicle are all in order? Since guessing or assuming won't help me, sources for your answers would be helpful. Thanks.""

TL;DR Cady is having many emotional breakdowns.
I’ve cried more in the last week than I have probably in the last 8 years. Why? Because my depression is rearing its ugly head and I’m reliving all the things I wish I could change. I was able to combat it throughout high school because I had colorguard. I marched two fantastic wonderful years with The Academy, but couldn’t continue. My ex basically gave me an ultimatum for 2015. Either I go and march, and he throws out all my stuff and I wouldn’t have a home to come back to, or I stay and he “does everything he can to get me my age-out in 2016″. So I don’t march, because I thought I loved him and I wanted my stuff and I wanted a home that wasn’t my parents. In reality he was manipulating me and I should have just moved out anyways. Fast forward to 2016. We moved to Illinois. I didn’t get my age-out. My boyfriend beat me, choked me, and slammed my head into my car instead. I got my own apartment, I brought my dog home to live with me. I couldn’t afford to fly out to Arizona for auditions and camps... And I cried, a lot. Because my boyfriend owned all the furniture, I was sleeping on my air mattress I had for drum corps. I didn’t have internet. I didn’t have a tv. I had my books though. And I could find ways to occupy myself with my phone. I, of course, took my dog for many walks. I tried hard to reconcile my relationship. Because I thought I loved him. I shouldn’t have bothered. [Enter sappy happy story about how I met my current boyfriend and our disastrous first date that ended with ex boyfriend going to jail for breaking and entering and a restraining order]
I eventually got back on my feet from the generosity of my current boyfriend. It’ll be a year on the 27th and I am happy. Because of him, I was able to afford the tickets to Indianapolis and see my Acadefamily make history in 2016 finals. And I cried a lot because I wanted so badly to be on that field making history with the other vets who dedicated themselves to getting to that moment. Hell, I cried like a baby when I saw Whitney. Because I know she’s gone through similar events in her personal life. She never shared it with us, just said that her former significant other was in prison. She was also one of the instructors I felt the closest to. She always had inspiring words to share with us.  And she picked me to be in her dance group for Center Stage in 2014. And I won’t forget that.
But my failures in being part of the Academy 2015-2016 color guard make me cry every time I think about it. Because I shouldn’t have let anything or anyone get in the way of doing what I love. I guess hindsight is 20/20.
And that always leads me into the feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness. Hopeless and worthless because I don’t feel like my life is significant. What have I done to contribute to society. Literally nothing. Am I educating people? Kind of? I work with a high school band program. But I struggled with it and suck at creative choreography. I’m a decent performer.... But I fail at creating work. And that last thing I want to do is steal choreography from someone I see on Instagram or Facebook.... I feel like an inadequate instructor. Am I creating and instilling value at my job and in my personal life? No, I’m a bean counter at a wholesale drug company.. Personal life? I don’t know. Ask Michael. All we really do is sit at home.. He plays LoL or Overwatch (lately Overwatch) and I’m left to dwell on these things or attempt to entertain myself. I’m not very good at that either. I just don’t feel like I have a purpose. So today I looked at taking online courses through ASU. Because they’re one of the only colleges I know of that offer 4 year courses 100% online. I don’t have time to go to college campuses to actually take courses. Michael came over to see what I was doing and all  he said was “why are you looking at that, it’s going to be expensive.” I was hoping to hear a “you’re looking at going back to school?” Something positive, or say something about being proud of me for wanting to do that. (all I really want out of life is for someone to tell me they are proud of me)... I don’t know the slightest thing about going to college.. My parents and siblings didn’t go and my high school preps you for college courses fairly well, but no one tells you what to do.. I’m sorry to say but I need someone to hold my hand through things like that. Because I’m clueless. I need help.
Since all this political stuff has been happening, I wanted to look into political science, you know, become a politician because I want to make a change. I want to help people and protect peoples rights. I want to move things forward in the US.. But then I read an article about how much money it costs to be a politician.... And I don’t have that kind of money. I don’t have a lot of money to go to school either. It’s just an endless cycle of “ you can’t. You’re poor.”
And someone could be reading this and saying I’m pathetic. But I literally do not know how to help myself. I used to say I was motivated and driven.. But I don’t know where that went. I can blame the depression, but really I think it’s just me. I think I’m destined to be stuck in this kind of life. I don’t think I was meant to go to college. I think I was meant to have a meaningless job in a small independent drug wholesaler. Or an office clerk at a small car dealership with little regard for their employees.
I want to be a mom. I want to get married and have a wonderful life. I want to live in a nice house with a nice yard and have nice things. I want the American Dream. But the more I look at my life, the more I know I wont ever have that. I would like to be a stay-at-home mom for the first 5 years of my kids life. I don’t want to have to pass them off to someone or have to pay for child care. But Michael brought me back down to earth. He wouldn’t be able to support all of my expenses plus the added expense of a child on his own. I would have to work... And that makes me sad. It makes me not want to bring a kid into this life if he/she would have to grow up going without all the things he/she wanted. I want to give them everything that I can.. And I know I would never be able to.
And that makes me cry. I’m just a big ball of tears. And the worst part? I have no idea how to talk to Michael about any of this.

Oil and water: Studying the Persian Gulf’s most pressing environmental dilemmas
On a black monitor in a dusty office in MIT’s Green Building, an iceberg the width of three football fields wallows in the shallow, briny waters of the Persian Gulf, 6,000 miles from its home.
Engineering firms in the UAE have recently touted plans to tow chunks of ice wrapped in plastic from Antarctica to the coast of the Persian Gulf to be used as fresh drinking water. There is perhaps no one better to vet the plan’s plausibility than Alshehhi, who in 2016 became the first United Arab Emirates national to get a PhD in earth observation and ocean color remote sensing.
Since March, Alshehhi has been working in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences’ (EAPS) Marshall Group to create the first-ever climate models of the Persian Gulf, a small body of water in an arid region where water availability and environmental standards have historically taken a back seat to rapid urbanization and oil interests.
Over 93 joint research projects have resulted, many focusing on sustainability issues, such as Abu Dhabi’s urban heat island effect and the Persian Gulf nation’s growing thirst for fresh water.
For one, collecting data in the Persian Gulf “is not easy at all,” she says.
Alshehhi’s graduate research focused on monitoring the Persian Gulf from above, using satellite imagery to track biological life.
The plants pump the waste, a salty sludge, back into the gulf, resulting in steadily rising salinity levels in the Persian Gulf, threatening local fauna and marine life and causing outbreaks of algae blooms.
Today, at MIT, Alshehhi’s work on the Persian Gulf goes beyond looking at just its surface. Together with John Marshall, EAPS Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Oceanography and expert in global ocean circulation modeling, she is creating in-depth models of the Persian Gulf using numerical and theoretical frameworks supported by field and satellite data.
The project, which is in the first of its three-year stint, will be the first record of the Persian Gulf’s water columns, circulation, and climate dynamics. Later on, these physical models will be overlaid with biogeochemical models to see how effects like increasing pollution, changing saline levels, and rising temperatures are influencing biological beings in the gulf.
“I’m really enjoying working with Maryam,” says Marshall. “I am learning so much from her about the [Persian] Gulf and its oceanography, but also something of the people and customs of the region, and the environmental challenges they face.”
