deng is watching her, as if he’s been waiting — say hello to him?

she exits her grandmother’s home, her smile faltering as her eyes meet deng’s. but the smile remains as the curve of her lips falls back into place, and chiyo tilts her head at him. she’s careful around him now, doesn’t want to antagonize the predator when she is naught but a rabbit in comparison. not the rabbit, but a rabbit all the same.

still, there is a twinge of anger in her chest — her grandmother’s house feels untouchable. felt. she doesn’t like that deng is here, having waited for her to come out. she doesn’t like that her grandmother could see him, meet him. she doesn’t like it at all.

“ how did you know i’d be here? ” she asks as if greeting an old friend. chiyo doesn't expect a straight answer, already making her own assumptions. “ this is pretty far from home. ” her home. far enough that this was a weekend trip, a little vacation from the hustle and bustle of the city. her skin crawls, but chiyo's smile grows into a teasing grin as she moves toward deng and away from her grandmother's front door.
