I’m listening to Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You by Big Thief while I’m studying, and I just had a really random thought while listening that I wanted to share/write down real quick.
So not that long ago I saw Fried Green Tomatoes right, and that movie has the least subtle subtextual lesbian romance ever, right. If you’ve seen it you know. Anyways, I got to “Simulation Swarm” in my album listening, and for some reason it struck me that that song is pretty reminiscent of Idgie and Ruth. I wasn’t thinking too deep about it so I might be just talking out of my ass but yeah I dunno. That song is connected with them now I guess so that’s fun!!
The song in case no one knows what I’m talking about ^^

studynotes #9
sunday - 06.09.20 - 00:23
So i’m studying for my exam on swarm intelligence and boi. i wonder how long it will take for my brain to be un-ruined from thinking about ant colony optimization so much. Like everytime ants are mentioned - you know, those funky little insects? - my brain just goes “Oh - backward, forward or random ants?” and i would like for it to stop so i can enjoy nature documenteries again.
Anyways, this is the third time i am preparing for this exam (first time i failed, second time i got sick) and it’s just such a great illustration of how even the most interesting topic can not only go stale but get so fucking annoying frustrating that its not fun anymore. Like look. I love Optimization problems. And celluar automata (and maybe even simulation theory) but somebody please save me from it all. I am very afraid to fail this exam again (i mean i will be able to retake it with no problem thankfully cause my uni actually did listen to our concerns about the virus and all) but will i really have the strength to sit down and study it all over again? I am just praying to whoever is the patron saint of students at this point.
On a a more positive note tho, I did pass both my data base exams on the first try (this didn’t happen to me in so long it still feels unreal) so i got that going for me i guess.
My thesis is moving forward very slowly (and its not even my fault, natural language processing is just like that) and while that is a source of mild distress and heavy annoyance, its a problem for kat, who will have had her swarm intelligence exam. At least, with the thesis I know what my next steps will be, so its fine. I just wish things were a bit faster, so i could at least get done before christmas. and before more exams 0^0′
So Yeah, sorry this is just me venting my frustrations. If anything, I wish all of you the strength to press on through annoying projects and frustrating topics and whatever else you may struggle with.
TL;DR: just me whining during a brief summery of what i’ve been up to uni-wise

A TEASE A DAY BRINGS YOU CLOSER TO YOUR DEATH  006
BROUGHT TO YOU BY IZUKU WITH A SHOUJO HEART " a-ah, y-y-y/n-kun! yamete kudasai~ "
Y/N's body quakes and quakes as the bus drives along the uneven road to their destination but he just stays still, sight trained to a certain direction.
"What are you looking at?" Denki slants his head as he swats his hand in front of Y/N's face, pupils broadened with interest in Y/N's thoughts.
"You," Y/N jests, his head snaps to Denki's direction, looking at him with an impish allure tiptoeing across his lips. The mustard boy benumbs at the sudden limpness paralysed his heart with that smile.
Bursting out in a guffaw at Denki's sudden freeze screen, Y/N swipes a hand dismissively, he tells him, "Nah, just wondering why my heart is going doki doki right now." He vibrates his torso to motion his heart movement.
"Is it because of me?" Denki nudges Y/N's side with his elbow, pitching him a smooth ass wink, he rests an arm on one of Y/N's shoulder as he squirms his eyebrows at him playfully.
"Oh my god, how did you know!" Y/N marvels at him in an exaggerated tone, hand violating Denki's poor thigh violently with loud slaps, the toothy and vibrant grin on his profile contrasting his actions.
"Ah, ah ahahah!-stop stop stop stop stop!" Denki pledges for mercy from Y/N, his digits grips onto Y/N's wrist and pins it to the cushioned bus seat to put an end to the painful beating on his milky white (now red) thighs.
Rubbing his already reddened skin to soothe the throb (he suspects that Y/N often spanks people with those hands), Denki proceeds to ask Y/N about the 'doki doki' sensation, "Anyways, Is it a weird feeling like something might go wrong?" He lets his head fall to the back of the seat as he speaks to the boy beside him.
"Dude, don't put up a flag," Y/N gasps and tucks his hand over his mouth, he soberly says to Denki, his hand grazing over Denki's shoulder, "You'll definitely jinx yourself, trust me."
"Well damn."
"You're damn right."
Swivelling back to face his front, Y/N rummages around his costume pockets for his earphones and phone, promptly ending the conversation.
"What game is that?" Uraraka to his right juts her head out and questions him, her toffee doe pupils embedded to the phone screen, glaring in inquisitiveness.
"PUBG, Japanese server," Y/N answers her in a flat tone, view not once abandoning the screen one bit whilst he controls the player in the game to snipe another person quite some distance away from crouching between the tall grass.
"Can I try after this round?" Uraraka asks, her doll-like eyes glinting with purity and stars, making it hard for people to reject her demands - but Y/N isn't looking at her, so that is no use.
Nevertheless, Y/N accepts, "Sure."
Y/N lends Uraraka the phone in his hand after he gets killed in the previous round, "Here, you know how to play right?"
"Yep!"
Uraraka struggles a little at first but soon gets the hang of the controls of the game and completely dominates the battlefield. By the end of five matches, Y/N jowl slacks gapingly as his hand loafs against his forehead, the other hand cleaving onto his phone, somewhat wavering.
"Wha-how?" Y/N's eyes bulge at the fourth top one interface, the corner of his lips twitching when he twists to Uraraka all of a sudden, "Uraraka-chan, please add me!" enveloping Uraraka's remarkable digits in one enraptured motion, implores Y/N eagerly.
"Ahhahahah, I'm actually not that good ..." Uraraka scratches her neck, she laughs in a coy fashion as she nibbles on the inside of her cheeks, "But I'll add you when I download the game," she appends, stringing a hand up to keep Y/N from getting upset, her lips wrest upsloping in an ear-to-ear smile.
、、、
The pro hero Thirteen speaks to the class with his prepared speech, prating on about how any quirk can kill and that they should learn to use their quirks not to hurt but to save other people, their powers are absolutely not to be used with the intent to hurt the innocent. Y/N indulges in his blank trance through all that, too bored out to listen.
"What's that?" Izuku murmurs to himself, glancing in the direction where a purple swirl hole just emerged from, his brows knitted conjointly and a frown warping his features.
"Probably the nether portal," Y/N overhears the boy's shushed mumbles and responds with a joke, which Izuku tilts his head at in perplexion.
"?????"
"The simulation perhaps?" suggesting a proper answer, Y/N studies the violet void elaborately, the jesting grin by his lips gradually dying down.
"Are you sure ...?" Izuku questions hesitatingly as he eyes the ominous colour and swirls with wary. The vision seems to compel a churning sensation in his stomach, the feeling isn't like anxiety, it spreads more towards something like ... dread.
"Nah, I think it may be ..." Y/N's hoarse voice tapers off whilst even more of those swirl holes take shape beside the first one, like some gateway for the dead.
"It may be ...?" a whisper courses out of Izuku lips as his droopy eyes amplifying at the people that scaled out of the voids, and his jowl slackens at the dreadful sight.
"Don't move, these are real villains!" Aizawa hollers as he realises what the thing is, activating his defence and quirk into the drive, he backs off the students and himself.
"Yep, that."
A villain steps out from tens and hundreds of others that are still swarming out of the portals, he conducts a speech towards the heroes on how All Might has been distracted by the other villains and that he can't save them now blah blah blah.
Pfft, doesn't he know the golden rule of not talking too much if you're a villain? Y/N mocks the villain internally, an amused hue cast over his irises as he focuses at the villain with the crook of his lips twisted upwards.
"Shit," Y/N damns under his breath as he props up his hands against the jagged ground, standing upright on his feet, he examines his surroundings with tapered eyes, "well at least I'm at a high place."
Hunkering down to a lower slope, he delves out several mini knives. As he shuts a single eye to aim, he draws back the hand gripping onto a knife and darts it directly towards the head of a female villain in close proximity of the bottom of the hill. Straight after one shot, he propels forth another few knives at the other villains nearby, most hits striking the headshot.
He relocates himself downwards to the hillfoot and more to the left, lugging out a dagger for defence. There seems to be only one villain in the area, as Y/N ventures around searching for his classmates in heed of any sudden attacks, his vision stretched across the terrain sees no other villain until ten minutes later when he finally spots a figure of a somewhat villain-looking guy.
Y/N prances towards the villain's back that is facing him and hooks an arm around their neck. Reinforcing his latch on the villain's neck, he continues to do so until the body in his arms falters unconscious.
As he discerns another villain from afar coming at him, Y/N readies himself with his needles and projects all at the villain one by one, levelling at the villain's arteries and veins at his limbs to render him out of action.
Albeit the villain in front of the boy is down, he doesn't see the one coming from behind. Y/N's ear apprehends the stout stomps of footsteps behind him but by the time he reacts, a ripping spasm surges through his left shoulder.
Y/N yelps out in torment, blindly stabbing his dagger backwards, he twists the blade that has penetrated the villain's body. And he swivels to his back in one swift motion, a side of his shoulder slumping from the keen claws of the villains that did a surprise attack on him. He grunts in agony, clamping his teeth as he lets go of his dagger and charges it at the single wrist of the villain rapidly.
Taloned wrist now immobilised, the villain attempts to use brute force and launches himself at Y/N. The latter laps at his dry lips as he compresses the wound on his shoulder with one hand, hissing at the sting when he does. And he leaps into the air to only land on the reckless villain's head with a harsh kick.
The villain lurches a bit from the strong kick but manages to seize Y/N's ankle with his left hand, he wrenches his ankle to the side by force, earning a swathed groan and vigorous struggles from the teen.
The villain then swings him to the side with strength, about to release his clasp on Y/N's twisted ankle when Y/N, in turn, clutches onto his right shoulder in one swift movement and chops the back of his nape.
The villain remains standing for a moment, worrying Y/N but then he plummets to the floor with a heavy thump, hand around Y/N sprained ankle limping. Y/N boots the villain's sides several more times to make sure they've passed out, he tears a patch of the villain's costume off to wrap it around his injured shoulder after inspecting that there are no villains close to him, ceasing the slight blood flow.
He flops onto the ground, one leg extended out in front and the other bent. Whilst Y/N hoists a hand up to swab at the sweat on his forehead, he pants with his lips apart heavily, his sight seeming to sway for some reason.
After what appears to be some while later, Y/N finally rises to his feet from the dusty earth, he lurches his way towards the central plaza where they first were with his aching shoulder constantly acting on him.
As Y/N approaches the centre, he conceals himself behind a pile of bushes to study the situation before raiding out. His breath hitches when he snatches a glimpse of a familiar pot of turquoise hair, Y/N hunches his head down swiftly as the madman's crimson iris skims over the region where he is.
Fuck, that was close, he lays a hand on his beating chest that halted for a moment just before. The ground seems to lurch under him as he slightly bends atop the bush, lacking the strength to keep his eyes ajar.
Time flows along without Y/N's realisation whilst he watches the two sides battle it out in the central plaza, by the time the villains retreated and the class begin gathering together, Momo finds Y/N lounging his back on the shrubs just some distance from the centre.
"L/N-san, L/N-san," calls Momo as she angles down and taps Y/N's shoulder twice in a gentler manner.
"Huh?-Oh hey, Momo," Y/N peeks a crack on one eye sluggardly and wafts a hand at Momo's approximate direction to greet her, ascending up to his feet rather leisurely. "Are we going back to the bus now?" he asks whilst he sweeps the dirt off his rear. A nod is given as a response from Momo.
、、、
"Aye, Izuku!" Y/N screeches across the sidewalk with his chin tilted upwards, he sprints over to Izuku in haste and springs up then drapes a hefty arm on the broccoli's back (in which Izuku kind of stammers at and almost trips).
"Ah, hi Y/N," stabilising himself for a bit, Izuku turns his head towards Y/N and hails to me, an inelastic smile on his features.
"So you know what happened today? I ...[leaving out three thousand +++ words]"
Y/N lays his arm on Izuku's shoulder reliantly, he rambles on about the happenings of the day with a languid mood, accidentally bumping his head with Izuku from time to time.
The latter would occasionally give out a comment or two and retell his experience during the invasion when Y/N comes out with a question to him all of a sudden.
They walk through rows of stores, structures, facilities while they communicate about their experiences during the day, and before they know it, they arrive under where Izuku's apartment lies.
"Oh, is this where your apartment is?" scanning the stairwell to Izuku's apartment, Y/N questions out of nowhere.
The apartments conveniently loll on top a row of stores and restaurants, the windows of the rooms on the floors above the shops lit up, most likely Izuku's neighbours.
"Ahah ... yeah."
"I better memorise the address so I can come sleepover or hang out sometime," Y/N convulses into light laughter as he banters with Izuku, smacking the broccoli head's shoulder.
"U-Uh, Y/N?"
Y/N hums in a questioning tone, his face turns to Izuku whilst the latter sheepishly scratches the back of his neck and asks, "Don't you have to go to your part-time?"
"Oh yeah," Y/N fishes out his phone from his pocket, his slim finger presses on the power button as he takes a look at the time. "It's at five thirty but how do you know?" his eyes avert back to Izuku, a rare unfocused look on his face that softens his features and takes Izuku by whim.
"O-h, I've uhm overheard you speaking to someone else about having part-time jobs almost every day after school," Izuku truthfully spills to Y/N, his digits fidgeting with the hem of his shirt and his bottom lips chewed between his teeth, his head dangles down almost automatically. When he sees Y/N's expression contort in the corner of his eyes, he adds, "Sorry ... if you think it's invading your privacy ..."
"It's okay," Y/N flicks his hands to gesture it's fine and adds jokingly with a short giggle, "didn't know you cared that much about me."
"Haha, hah ..."
"Anyways, I'll be going to not be late to my shift," Y/N grips onto his slumping bag strap with one hand and pivots to the direction of the traffic light on his heel, he gazes at Izuku with his face sided.
Nodding his head, Izuku straightens his back up and he holds a hand up to wave farewell at the h/c boy, "Oh okay, bye Y-" He's interjected by Y/N who comes to a standstill under a lamp post in front of a closing store, Y/N glances back at Izuku with a grin that doesn't say anything good.
"Wait come over here a bit."
Y/N flicks his finger to gesture for Izuku to stride closer, the guise on his face befogged to the dull bronze glow from the lamp post aside illuminating only a part of his chiselled jaw.
"??"
Izuku blinks with a puzzled sheen glossing his eyes but still does as Y/N says and shifts towards the latter, cautiously remaining a respectful distance from him.
"Closer." Y/N's smile pitches, an impartial look carves over his face.
Five inches, Izuku's throat rolls in what he can't tell is embarrassment or anticipation as their distance closes in.
"And closer."
Three inches, he counts.
Izuku can't help but flush up at the proximity between them, the tip of his ears glowing a vibrant tint of red. He averts his eyes to the two mingled silhouettes distended along the sidewalk and overlay the lavender bushes beside, vaguely dubious.
Izuku hastily turns his vision away again, his already bloodied features louring into a more vivid shade at the thought that just arose.
"Uh-Uh, I think this might be too-" Izuku interjects his own sentence whilst Y/N's face latches in on him, his eyes widen in stupefaction.
"MUA! "
A clink resounds from Y/N as he briefly plants his lips on the tip of Izuku's nose before pacing back to admire the view of Izuku's bright red cheeks, brazen and cheeky grin varnishing over his features whilst he lets out faint snickers.
"Y-Y-Y-Y-Y/N??" by the time Izuku lets out a sound and calls for Y/N, he can only see the back of Y/N who's hastening along the sidewalk, some gap away already.
Hearing Izuku's stammering voice, Y/N slows down his footsteps, he holds a waving hand up and yells, "I'll see you tomorrow, bye~"
After Y/N left, Izuku makes his way up the stairway to his apartment, his footsteps dense and heavy, his mind running blank the entire time. He doesn't go in when he reaches his apartment door, he stands still outside, taking deep breaths to lulls his heartbeat down as he binds a hand through his locks.
The apartment door creaks open, a head peeks out from the crack, "Izuku?"
"Y-eah, mom?"
"Come in, what are you doing outside still?"
"Ahahah ... the wind felt ... nice and I wanted to feel it more hahaha ..." Flapping his hand to pretend to fan himself, Izuku rigidly laughs whilst maintaining awkward eye contact with his mother, which earns him a queer glance from her.
"Okay ...?" as his mother steps aside to let Izuku in the house, she trails off in a questioning tone. "Was your friend downstairs, I saw a boy in Yuuei uniform too? He looks like a nice person," Izuku's mother sends a casual question at him as she locks the front door before trotting over to the kitchen to begin preparing dinner for the day.
"Ahahah ... yeah, he's a pretty outgoing a nice person to almost everyone ..." Izuku mutters in a low tone timorously to his mother, slender fingers unbinding his knotted laces and hauling off his sneakers.
Izuku prances to his bedroom as soon as his shoes were placed on the shoe rack properly and seal the door locked to avoid someone walking in on him. He dives straight onto his bed and harrows his head into a pillow, muffling his uncharacteristic screech from being heard by his mother.
"MMMMMPFHHHFHF."
Till now Izuku can still sense the touch of warmth on his nose tip as if the boy's lips are still there.
Flipping over to his back, his chest heaves up and down laboriously from the robust thrashing of his heart against his rib. Bashful pupils gazing at the splits and cracks of the chalky ceiling above, he cradles his sultry cheeks between his hands, "Too much, hah ... hah ..."
"This is ... hhhh ... too ... bad for my heart."
TO NOTE
tbh when i read through izuku's dialogue, my yellow mind was like 'ohoho' sounds like something from an izuku bottom fic hahahah
and about the ending of this book, i think i'm gonna definitely make an ending where it's basically a poly relationship, and maybe an ending for each of the characters.
buuuuut feel free to recommend some characters to involve in the harem or comment on what ending you'd like, etc.

Chuvash Saga [IC]
Letter to Grand Duchess Yuliya Kardasheva from Princess Elmira Kardasheva
08.03.2258 [2258 After creation of the Chuvash People’s Republic in Novi Cheboksary]
Her Most Holy Grand Duchess, Voice of Lady Inanna, Mother and Savior of the Chuvash People, wise leader of the Chuvash People’s Republic.  I plead that you listen to you most humble daughters request, and consider my reasoning for asking you, most wise of rulers, to take the following step.
For centuries, we have embraced a policy of peace.  It is not just in our nature, but the wish of the most beautiful of goddesses, Lady Inanna, that we do so.  However, we must not let our desire for peace blind us to the horrors that surround us.
Over the last 260 years, we have been able to leave the confines of our ring world and once again become a space-faring civilization.  Our numbers have grown to unimaginable levels. We have a relatively small, but very congested interstellar empire.  Most importantly, we have avoided the evils of war to achieve this.
On the technological level, we are the most advanced of the young empires.  Our technological edge has made our rising nation the envy of the galaxy.
In the Peskova System, we have finished the construction of a Matrioshka Brain.  That technological marble is capable of hosting six virtual worlds, where up to 200 billion of our citizens can upload their minds into vast and idealized simulated worlds.  The only limit once there, is their imagination!
We have built a massive stellar Industrial Complex in the Ksenia Aleksandrova System.  It alone produces more energy, food, and minerals than many of the interstellar empires.  It is worked entirely by artificial intelligence, and though impressive, it is but a very small part of our massive economy.
The SSR Galina Rakhimova is a Dzyuba-class Avatar Ship.  If you were to decree it, it could use it’s massive laser sphere to destroy entire planets. It is also equipped with an Arc-en-Ciel Cannon, a machine that seals its target in a pocket dimension and then forces it to undergo a big crunch, erasing any trace that the target ever existed. It is also armed with a massive Arc Cannon, which is a lighting weapon that can penetrate any armor or shield with easy.
Our population has worked tirelessly to build 4 ring worlds.  The one in the Polyachihina System stands as our greatest achievement. It is made up of 4 rings that contain 32 habitable segments.  800 billion of our citizens call this single system home.
The Nikitchuk System is made up of 3 rings, made up of 18 habitable segments, and housing 450 billion citizens, over 200 billion of whom are Bashkir immigrants and their descendants. Next comes the Evtushenko System, which consists of 2 rings, 10 habitable segments, and houses 250 billion citizens. Finally, we recently finished construction of a 4-segment ring world in the Gerasimov System, but we have yet to settle there.
Dear Mother, we have an unmatched economy, a population many times larger than the rest of the galaxy combined, technological levels that would allow us to use the entire energy output of the galaxy, and are in a federation with the strongest military power of the young nations—the Khanate of Bashkortostan.
So why my letter?  I plead you don’t immediately disregard my request when you read it, and actually think over my arguments.
Mother, I have come to the conclusion that we must invest in creating the largest, most powerful fleet in the galaxy.  Not for conquest, or for imposing our will on other empires.  We must maintain a commitment to peace.  But we cannot ignore threats to us, to decency, to life in the galaxy.
The Canthari Empire are slaving despots.  The 94 billion Canthari have used their military might to capture and enslave primitive peoples incapable of actually defending themselves.  Currently, more than 4 billion Dabulan and 2 billion Qiramulan are slaves to the Canthari.  These were two civilizations who had just gained the ability to build nuclear weapons, and were taking the first steps to venturing out into space.  Their whole existence changed when their planets were invaded by the Canthari and their people enslaved.
An even bigger threat to peace and security of the galaxy are the Qvefoz Horde.  These creatures are a devouring swarm, whose sole reason for existing is to conquer other peoples so they can eat them.  They care little if those they consume as food are sentient or not.  Unlike the Canthari, who enslave their enemies, the Qvefoz eat them.  They have wiped out at least three pre-ftl species, having eaten billions of them.  They control 9 planets and keep expanding.
Mother, I understand that war is evil, that it should be a last resource.  However, how can we sit idly by while these two monstrous civilizations run amok in the galaxy?  If we have the capacity and means to stop them, and we chose not to, are we not as evil as they are?  The deaths of their victims are in our hands!  Those whom they have murdered, enslaved, and consumed could have been saved by us, but instead we chose inaction.  Their tragic end rests in our conscience.  I do not know how you can sleep knowing we could have saved them, how we still can save those 6 billion enslaved by the Canthari, yet we chose not to help them.
I plead not as a politician, but as a daughter.  I love and respect you, dear mother, but how can I maintain such feelings if you chose to remain passive while tragedies are brought upon untold billions?  How can I pray to Lady Inanna, Goddess of Love and Beauty, when we sit in our ivory towers while evil runs amok, spilling the blood of innocents and defenseless?
On 07.04.2246, more than two decades ago, our ships encountered a star system very similar to that from where we hail.  Not Novi Cheboksary, but the sun.  The third planet in that system we discovered was a continental world, inhabited by humanoids not unlike us, but at a much lower level of development.  These humanoids numbered around 7 billion and were merely entering an industrial age, where most of their factories ran on coal. Like our original planet, Earth, the humanoids in this planet were divided into many different nations, often at war with each other.  Since it was so similar to our home system, we named that system Sol, and the planet Sol III.  We called the humanoids there humans, as they resemble at an earlier stage of our evolution.
At the time you ordered the construction of an observation satellite over their world, to keep tabs on them.  We also adopted a policy of intense study of these creatures, often capturing a few specimens to test their biology, brain capacity, and development.  Like us, they were quick learners.  By 2251 they had managed to advance enough to split the atom, giving them the capacity to self-destruct if not closely monitored.
These ‘humans’ are a fascinating species.  They are like us more than 300,000 years ago.  It is almost like looking at our past, before we evolved into the Chuvash of today.  There is so much we can learn and I hope we can continue to study them.
I bring them up because in the grand scheme of things, they are defenseless.  Their system borders the Canthari Empire, and the only thing standing between them and complete destruction is the starbase we built on their system.  If the Canthari were to ever attack, we’d be forced to defend ourselves, but that system is so far out, their entire civilization would be destroyed before we could lend aid.
Mother, sometimes to maintain peace, it is necessary to show strength.  Sometimes, action must be taken against evil so that it does not dare spread its wings.  If we chose to remain passive, then the blood of the innocents is on our hands.  The Canthari and the Qvefoz have demonstrated they only understand one thing: force.
As such, I as that you authorize the use of the Avatar planet destroyer ray, so that the galaxy will know what awaits those who threaten sentient life.  I also ask that you expand our fleet into several fleets that can fight on multiple fronts.  We must let those who seek to bring pain and destruction upon others, that they will be repaid in kind if they dare.

In the hunt for aliens, satellites may light the way

In the hunt for aliens, satellites may light the way
The Earth is expanding, satellite by satellite, every rocket launch carrying a piece of the planet’s crust into orbit. Should this incidental geoengineering venture continue, it will reshape our planet’s profile as seen across even interstellar distances—giving our smooth sphere a noticeable bulge.
If we’re puffing up our planet, other civilizations could be doing the same to theirs, producing a ring of satellites that we might be able to spot with telescopes we have today. That’s according to Hector Socas-Navarro, an astrophysicist at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias in Spain, who gave a talk on the topic at NASA’s Technosignatures Workshop in Houston last week. Scientists have long speculated that fantastical sun-sized structures might betray the presence of technological aliens, but while a mega-solar panel blocking a distant star is theoretically easy to spot, such notions remain squarely in the realm of science fiction. Thought experiments like Socas-Navarro’s, however, show that now, equipped with better telescopes than their predecessors, researchers are taking searches for planet-level changes more seriously.
Socas-Navarro realized that one planet-scale project in particular should have a specific and visible effect. Imagine a world something like Earth but a few hundred years ahead, technologically speaking. In this world, the alien military has launched GPS satellites to help with navigation. Alien NASA and alien Google have also launched countless weather and mapping satellites to deliver real-time feeds of the entire planet. Many of these satellites sit in special spots, geosynchronous and geostationary orbits, where they move in lockstep with their planet, letting them monitor the same area all the time. Fill in those special orbits and you get a thin cylinder ringing the planet, one that, when it passes between its star and an observer (like us), casts a slightly different shadow out into space than the naked planet would alone. When that shadow sweeps by the Earth, planet-hunting satellites like the aging Kepler and newly functional TESS could witness the alien star dimming in a specific way.
Socas-Navarro published preliminary simulations in The Astrophysical Journal in March showing what that dimming would look like to modern telescopes if we were to watch such an Earthlike planet about ten light-years away. A satellite ring as thin as ours would be too sparse to see, he concluded, but Kepler could spot one about a billion times denser—a radical, but not impossible change that we could pull off in 200 years if launches continue to grow at current rates.
Plenty of people are already studying these stellar flickers, searching for something similar: a planet with natural rings. “It makes for a tricky transit, a tricky shadow,” says Masataka Aizawa, a graduate student at the University of Tokyo who found one possible Saturn cousin in 2017. He agrees that the dimming from a dense satellite belt should look unique. Natural rings spread out equatorially like a record while geosynchronous orbits form a north to south tin-can shape with vanishingly thin walls (ours currently measures just 450 feet thick), and the two geometries should cast two distinct shadows. But he still considers the paper’s suggestion, which he calls “science fictional,” a long shot. “I saw almost all of the [dimming] curves in the Kepler data, and there is no such evidence in my study,” he said.
Whether satellite-loving aliens are out there or not, running more detailed simulations of how the dimming patterns of moons differ from those of rings and satellite swarms helps all exoplanet researchers, Socas-Navarro points out. “We have to make sure we don’t misinterpret something as interesting as aliens, that we don’t mistake [them] with a natural ring or a natural moon,” he says. “If you look deeply they are different.”
While the technosignatures workshop focused on listening, not talking, Socas-Navarro’s ideas also suggest a sweeping conclusion about the nature of the first contact between two species. For decades our radio receivers and telescopes have restricted our potential pen pals to what he colorfully dubs “big brothers”—civilizations with unthinkably advanced technology. These species would be capable of engineering feats such as literally moving stars around, but recent surveys for traces of “astroengineering” have come up short.
As humanity’s capacity to observe advances, the type of civilization we can detect grows closer in nature to our own. Socas-Navarro’s satellite ring is the mark of a moderately advanced civilization just centuries ahead of us, rather than millennia. And he’s not the only one thinking along those lines. Others have proposed looking for orbital mirrors that could warm or cool a planet, something we humans have recently discussed as a potential solution to our own changing climate.
Any thought experiment about alien civilizations has to start with the only civilization we know, and compared with the technologists of the 1960s, climate change has burdened modern researchers with a more nuanced understanding of how technology can destabilize a civilization. “We are facing global problems that we didn’t have before, like global warming,” Socas-Navarro says, “so there is motivation to start global scale projects.” Based on our current experience, it’s not a big jump to wonder whether other civilizations, if they exist, have faced similar challenges—and found technological solutions.
Over the last seventy years, our machines have developed from being able to observe a civilization that controls stars to one that controls merely its own planet. And in the not too distant future, Socas-Navarro predicts, the synthesis of next-gen telescopes with the developing field of astrobiology will bring us to another tipping point. “We are not far from the transition,” he told an interdisciplinary audience of astronomers, archeologists, and anthropologists in Houston on Thursday. “In the next few decades we will be able to see ourselves at interstellar distances, and then we will become big brothers.”
Since little brothers can most easily detect big brothers, the hypothesis suggests that contact will tend to occur between species with a sizeable technology gap. Such contact between human civilizations has not turned out well for the little brother historically, but Socas-Navarro sees one potential reason for optimism.
Based on humanity’s experience with rapid development, researchers speculate that a “sustainability filter” may stop more violent species from reaching technological maturity. Expansionists that fail to check their aggressive impulses may quickly overrun their environment, triggering a technology-resetting crash, or even outright extinction.
Our current struggle to find a balance with our ecosystem suggests we could be facing just such a filter. Climate change threatens to render swaths of the planet uninhabitable by the end of the century, a blow that would derail economic and technological development. Clearing this hurdle, and finding a way for seven to ten billion people to live comfortably yet sustainably, will require that we take an active hand in managing the planet’s climate and resources. Should we reach that point, we’d be able to keep launching satellites and engage in other planet-shaping activities that could be seen from afar. By the same logic, other highly visible civilizations are also more likely to be active curators of their planets.
“They will implement changes to their planet just as a gardener will change his garden,” Socas-Navarro says.
In such a universe, most instances of first contact would be between mature gardeners and those grappling with their own unruly gardens. The likely outcome of such contact, one hopes, would be a gardening lesson.

Hints
Easy Money
At the end of each year(around Dec. 25)pause the game and raise taxes to 22. Unpause game and after Jan. 1st repause game and lower taxes to normal level. The higher your population, the more money you make. This can be used to keep taxes at zero to make residents happy but still make money.
Aging Power Plants
When a power plant is aging, you have to bulldoze it. Do NOT leave it alone or it will explode. When you bulldoze it just make another one, because it is better than it blowing up.
Airports
This is how you should make airpots.
1. NOT near residential areas.2. Make them big.3. On a popular steet.4. It is OK to put them near Commercial and Industry areas.
(Same rules with seaport but with seaport make them near a big body of water.)
Museum Parks
If an area of your city has a low land value, simply build a museum park in the area, who’s land value you want to raise. A museum park is a museum that is surrounded by parks and ponds, (I feel Large Parks work the best.) This is garenteed to raise the land value of the area of your city, but keep a lot of space, museum parks take up a lot of area. Museum Parks work expecially well with zones that are also touching water!
Building Tunnels
To Bulid tunnels, Make a very big hill. Next, build a road up the hill 2 or 3 tiles up. Now do the same number of tiles on the other side and it will say do you want to contruct a tunnel. Click OK.
Richer Apartments
Put a big high residential near the water and put a road to get to it. Give it water and power. Don’t put your residentail area near HUGE comercial or don’t put near industrial at all. That means industry, or garbage centers sims will get mad. Now put it in life your residential area should grow into very nice rich apartments. (Don’t do this as soon as you start a new city.)
Planning A City
While embarking upon the construction of a new City be patient. Draw a rough sketch of a city you want: an ultra modern, medium sized or a small town. Select the terrain accordingly. Then the first thing to do is to build road network. Then provide zones for residential and Commercial adjacent to each other. Donot build an Industrial Zone near these two as it will generate pollution and pull down the land value. Then build suitable power plant(not near to Residential or Commercial Zones). Then Make sure that water system is adequate or your sims will run away. After that connect your city to any one neighbour through highway as this will ensure prosperity in your city. There should be a port (salt water with atleast 58 m deep) and an airport which should not be placed near any zone. Plant trees near airport and sea port and make sure that your city has hospitals, schools and colleges in the vincity of Residential areas. Now start up and be precise in your ordinaces.
All Buildings
Open and close the Power Plants menuOpen and close the Rewards & Opportunities menuOpen and close the Garbage Disposal menuOpen the Landmarks menuEFFECT: When you open the Landmarks menu, you'll find that ALL the buildings in SimCity 3000 Unlimited are now available to you!
Beginning
When you begin your city, make the police and fire budgets low (since they don’t have as much ground to look over).
Hills And Water
Residential and Commercial zones that are placed next to water or hills will have higher land value.
Business Deals
Whenever you go into the negative, someone might come up to you with a business deal. The Gigamall and the Maximum Security Prison will not provoke any riots from Sims. But the Casino and Toxic Waste Plant will cause a few sparks. Do whatever you choose depending on your financial problems. Toxic Waste Plant:$400 per month Casino:$350 per month Maximum Security Prison:$250 per month Gigamall:$300 per month Total Monthly Contribution:$1300 per month Total Yearly Contribution:$15,600
Ordinances
An ordinance is something you put out in your city that makes water pollution, air pollution, garbage capacity, etc., a little better. But some ordinances cost alot of money per month, and the bigger your city becomes, the more you pay for that ordinance. SO, if you make an ordinance don’t listen to the petitioners, listen to what your adivisors say; they know what they are doing and their opinion is 95% the time right.
Pollution
Bulid high polution buildings and zones (airports, spaceports, max. security prisons) on your borders as far away from the rest of your town as possible. This way the pollution won’t affect your town too much and the pollution will be shared with your neighbor!
Bridge Building
Fist, select a road, highway, or railroad and start on one side of the river. Then, click and drag until the “road shadow” reaches the other side. Continue to drag until it turns from red to blue, then you have a bridge.
Residential Areas
Do you want to live next to an industrial smoke factory? Neither do sims!
Mass Transit Praise
Start off your town’s transit system with bus stations and roads. After you establish your budget and get a steady flow of income, build in subways and trains.
High Land Value
The more parks you have, the higher your land value will become.
Get All Buildings
Open up the power box. Then close it. Next you go to the rewards box. Open and close it.Then go to the trash box. Open and close it. Finally go to the Landmarks box. You should have all the buildings.
