five roll and writers
okay so i've been doing a game design course to sharpen my skills and also just see how others teach and this assignment i have to come up with five different roll and write ideas for five themes i wrote up earlier. i'm going to try to brute force stream of consciousness it to sharpen that skill too. right here, live on socials. i guess if anyone wants to work on these with me let me know?
Kaiju attack - this one really leapt out at me and it's basically a solo tetris type game where the building up of the blocks represents godzilla slowly getting closer to tokyo and you have to try to invoke mothra enough times before your tetris rows reach the kaiju. this is a solo game i think although you could have everyone use the same rolls. it basically uses dice to generate where and what kind of blocks you have to draw in, so you're trying to not fill in the centre.
the next one is homing dogs from the pound. i think this is probably coop, and you roll as many dice as players and everyone has to take a dog, and the number on the die is how hard the dog is to house. so like a 1 is a tiny calm dog and a 6 is troubled amstaff. i think when you take a dice you also have to take something else maybe, like they're in pairs? and you can't discuss it after they've been rolled. then you assign your dice to cages and there's like a yhatzee system...
not the rerolls of yhatzee i mean like you have things you can put the dogs into like oh this person wants three dogs in a sequence, this person wants dogs that add up to seven, this person will take any dog below 4, and there's a way you can call the other shelters and say 'can you take this dog, then i can do this other combo' to house these two and they'll send you over their problems.
the next one is an idea i've had before so I'm going to quickly think of a new theme. I like puns so okay this is called Victory Roll and Write and it's about hairdos. I think in this one the dice are customers? And they want different kinds of haircuts. so I'll google 1940s haircuts. I'm thinking what you want here is maybe long sequences of numbers so you can make long curls. I'm imagining maybe a grid showing a head and you're trying to make long sequences that loop back around - the longer you go before you repeat a number the bigger the loop. and you end up with a crazy hilarious hairstyle. In this case I think everyone rolls the same dice and works simultaneously but they must work adjacent so once you start down a line you're off doing something else that other players aren't. so mostly solitaire. maybe first player passes so you can grab the bigger numbers.
next one i had was a similar idea where you're drawing something like a costumer ontop of someone. I think maybe the idea is your fashion designers and you want to make an outfit without wasting cloth? So here you want to fill in areas and not put clashing colours together. Probably also a thing where you have to take all of one colour that is rolled, say, so yes you get the colour you want but you'll have excess going outside the lines or touching colours its not supposed to touch. So probably a draft here, you draw then the others draw so you might take a ton of purple to stop someone else getting it? Maybe this uses cards and you have to deal things out until a certain point and all the cloth has to be used up or you all lose your jobs so the interaction is trying to force other cutters to take excess, but of course the first person to complete their outfit wins. i need to find some RWs like this to see how this works.
The last theme I wrote down was DUNGEON MAKER and I think this is maybe a bit like railroad ink but I would love to do this with a shared board and you're actually trying to have the coolest dungeon but you also have to meet in the middle? Or maybe you all start from the centre and you're trying to lure adventurers down into your corridor with treasures etc. So far I haven't used active player chooses, so yeah okay you roll a few dice and the active player chooses and some are just better than others (heroes always want treasure and monsters) and the other players must draw the remaining. This is simulating that once you hire the guy who builds say, otyugh pits, he can't work for anyone else that week, so the other dungeons get lower quality stuff. after each round the adventurers go into the dungeon and there's a thing that tracks how far they move as well as what they find, so you need to stack everything close together somehow or the adventurers will get tired. A bit like how in Clinic you lose points based on how long it takes doctors and patients to walk around. BUT you also want to expand so you draw over spaces that reveal diamonds or monster lairs (its way easier to just use the treasure and monsters already in place). so it's path-drawing. maybe there's funny things where you roll to see which way adventurers turn so like they can accidentally keep wandering into the boring old guardpost over and over. Okay, those are all different mechanics! Cool. I like the kaiju, the dogs and the dungeons best.
