pickings are honestly pretty slim for actual dating sims available in english, so not all of these are going to be "personal recommendations" compared to just "these are some of the famous ones you can play without knowing japanese"
what IS a personal recommendation is tokimeki memorial, if you're trying to get into dating sims you can't go wrong with starting with THE dating sim (and it really speaks to how weird western otaku culture is around this genre that the page for the fan translation for it calls it "more than just a dating sim" when it is the most "just a dating sim" a game could possibly be, but anyway.) if you turn out to like the gameplay style and/or you just prefer male love interests in the first place, the first three tokimeki memorial girl's side games (the otome versions of tokimemo, so female protag + male dating options instead of vice versa) also have fan translations.
hatoful boyfriend is also just an unironically good dating sim, and while i think familiarity with otome games would make it land better as a parody, you can absolutely play it as your first otome game and still have a good time with it if you can suspend your disbelief with the concept of all the love interests being sapient birds. (the sequel, holiday star, is just a visual novel, not a dating sim.)
doukyuusei is another very early classic dating sim that had a recent remake that's available in english on steam (with an optional patch to restore 18+ content.) white album also recently had an english translation of its remake published on steam! (it's mainly of the "schedule management" type of dating sim rather than more complex sim gameplay like something like tokimemo, so it might be a good entry point as something closer to a regular visual novel.) amagami is another "schedule management" type that does have an english patch, although it's still (from what i've heard) a bit buggy and unpolished. love plus... exists.
on the OELVN side, actual dating sims are also not super common and i can't speak for the actual quality of any of these, but sunrider academy, RE: alistair, and backstage pass are a few i know of and have seen recommended in the past.
also, in line with persona 3-5 being rpgs with dating sim elements, another game series that's (other game type) with dating sim elements added in that's worth checking out (and is underrated tbh) is sakura wars! only the first game has a fan translation but the 2019 reboot did get released on playstation in english.
what is your favourite dating sim/do you have any dating sim recommendations
I'm actually not much of a dating sim fan... it speaks a lot to my need for jangling keys that the closest thing I have to an answer is persona 3 (because the social links are explicitly a porting of dating sim mechanics into an rpg)
I'll invite people more into the genre to offer recommendations in the notes though!

Mystic Messenger - Round (Day?) Two, er . . . kind of
So . . . here we are again . . . kind of.
So essentially, the deal is this:
I played a lot of Mystic Messenger yesterday, and ended up going to about Day 5 in the casual route. This was after I had to re-do Day One due to losing my progress somehow (thank god you can fast forward the chats, and I remembered my answers), but nonetheless, I played a lot, took a lot of screenshots, et cetera. Then I learned that you can’t romance Seven in the Casual Route and instead can only romance him in the Deep Story, and I mean, if I can’t romance Seven, then what am I even doing here?? So, since I was a peasant and purchased 300 Hourglasses from the store (hey, I can admit when I’m being a peasant, all right), I started over yet again so I could play the Deep Story this time. That’s what I spent a good portion of today doing.
Nonetheless, I’m still going to share the screenshots I took from before I started over, since I kind of have the game on pause right now. So this will be another long post and might jump around some, but I hope it’s enjoyable anyway. If you missed the first liveblog post of this, you can find that here. And for now . . .
We open with this. Considering that (as you can see in the first post linked above) Jumin had once said that his employees should be crying tears of joy to be his slaves, this is a surprising statement from Jumin Han. Like, it’s the bare minimum of decency, but it’s still a surprising statement. He might actually have some decency / humanity in him after all. That said . . .
Okay, I laughed, but at the same time Jumin shouldn’t take that as an insult given that Seven is wonderful. I still laughed at how he bolded that and made his text bigger, though. Also, I have to say that I kind of ship them, although I also kind of ship Jaehee with Zen despite the fact that she could do so much better . . . more on that later.
Here’s Yoosung, being Captain Buzzkill.
This seems to be news to Seven. Don’t drag my bf and try to make him look bad just because you’re insecure about the fact that I want to date you (as you should be, because I don’t want to date you).
Poor bby. :( It’s okay, Seven, I don’t blame you.
Same, Yoosung. Same. Between this, using gaming to escape reality, and the lack of will to exercise, Yoosung is #relatable. (Like, we’re vastly different in other ways and so I don’t really relate to him, but in these three areas? Yeah. I understand his feelings.)
TOO REAL.
SAME, SEVEN, SAME. I FEEL YOU, BOO.
I mentioned yesterday that I’ve been far more savage to Zen as I play through than I was at first, and just in case anyone doubted me, here is a fraction of the evidence. I have receipts. I have receipts for how mean I’ve been to him. #noregrets.
OKAY, BUT I HAD SOME REGRETS FOR THIS ONE, ASDFJKSAFS. I picked the choice I did because I figured it would be like a sort of, “I’m too shy to say for sure” type of response, which seemed less mean or harsh than the others---but it was wrong, he had the broken heart reaction over it, and Zen liked it, like---!! That’s the opposite of what I wanted!! Thankfully, though, I did get to drag Zen again an answer choice later---
(Side note: I wear glasses irl. I AM PERFECT FOR SEVEN. DATE ME, SEVEN.)
It was fun teaming up with Seven like this to drag Zen, lololol. There was another part (and I’m not sure if I got screencaps of it or not) where Seven and I trolled Yoosung into making him think that he would faint and possibly die if he had even a little bit of coffee, which he had, and that was hysterical. It’s exactly the kind of messing around I like to do with my friends irl. Just more evidence that Seven’s path is definitely the path for me . . .
Anyway, this conversation right here continued on a bit and it got on the subject of Jumin, so of course---
“We’re both guys” I don’t see what that has to do with anything, Zen. Stop being so damn homophobic.
NO, JAEHEE. ZEN IS NOT ART. ZEN IS A DOUCHEBAG.
Ugh, so, here’s the thing . . .
Jaehee could do so, so much better than Zen. I like Jaehee a lot---she’s one of my favorite characters---and I think that she deserves someone than that pompous, homophobic douchewad. But at the same time, Jaehee is so ridiculously into Zen that I kind of ship them, because I want her to be happy and he clearly doesn’t have any aversion to her. (Actually, he defends her against Jumin, but at the same time I think that’s less because he likes her and more because he hates Jumin.) It’s not like I’m rooting for them to get together against Zen’s wishes; more like, I think that she would actually be a good girlfriend to him, and I think that he would make her happy even though she deserves so much better.
But at the same time, she does deserve better, and it’s like . . . I’d rather she realize that than get with him, asdjfksafs. I also kind of ship her with Jumin, because there are times when I feel like they could be a good match / could potentially like each other? Like there are certain conversations when I think that perhaps Jumin has feelings for her that he’s repressing / denying. He had a line once about how, before Jaehee became his assistant, he always had to leave Elizabeth the 3rd by herself because there was no one he could trust to take care of her. He clearly trusts and relies on Jaehee a lot. But then he’ll turn right around and say things like how he doesn’t like to hear her voice / see her in the chat because that reminds him of work, which is insulting and rude and makes it seem like he doesn’t like her, so ??? What is the truth, Jumin. What is the truth. There’s also the fact that Jaehee doesn’t like Elizabeth the 3rd’s fur (something she has in common with Zen, who has a cat allergy), which causes tension between them, and also that she feels like Jumin doesn’t respect her as a person. Those are the kinds of things that make me not want to ship them, and instead pushes me closer to Zen/Jaehee. (Meanwhile, this is a dating sim and so you would think I’d be more focused on getting all these guys for me, but joke’s on you, there’s only one I’m actually interested in, lololol.)
Anyway. More on this as it develops.
Okay, first of all, I happen to really, really like the name “Luciel”, and I think it’s great. Second, I really don’t believe this “cat abuser” nonsense. Like, I have a really, really hard time believing he abused Elizabeth the 3rd? It might be because I like him so much and so I don’t want to believe this (particularly since animal abuse is a HUGE trigger for me and so like---I could never like someone who abuses animals), but at the same time the descriptions of just hugging Elizabeth the 3rd, dancing with her, rubbing his face in her fur, et cetera---it sounds more to me like he just cuddled her a bit exuberantly and that’s what got Jumin’s jigglies puffled, idk. So I don’t think that’s fair and I refuse to believe it until there’s further evidence to support it.
THIS WAS THE GODDAMN WORST, TALK ABOUT A SADISTIC CHOICE. I don’t think Yoosung should be more like Zen, but at the same time I don’t want to date him either and couldn’t say that because it was a lie!! ASDFJAKFDSAFDAS In the end . . . in the end I was forced to say one of the worst things I’ve ever had to say in this game . . .
GROSS, DISGUSTING, ABHORRENT. At least I was able to walk it back and drag him a moment later---
I’m pretty sure I got the broken heart reaction for this one. #noregrets
I literally meant that as an insult. And speaking of insulting / being savage to Zen---
#noregrets
I can’t remember what prompted this (I know it was something I said, but I can’t remember what), but I’m including it because I love him.
I can’t tell what Paparazzi Pizza and Master Pizza are supposed to be, but Pizza Hat is clearly Pizza Hut and Don’t Me Know Pizza is clearly Domino’s Pizza, and I’m cackling.
SAME, SEVEN. LITERALLY SAME, ALWAYS.
Honestly, Seven is probably the most #relatable character in that he’s the most like me, I think. Does that make me a narcissist for wanting to date him so much? I mean, it’s not bad to want to date someone who has a lot in common with you, right? That just means we’ll get along!! (Smh @ me for thinking of this in relation to a goddamn dating sim / visual novel . . .)
Jumin is a fucking furry confirmed, part II.
I’M SORRY, YOOSUNG, BUT AS SOMEONE WHO HAD TO LEARN THIS THE HARD WAY, I FELT IT IMPERATIVE THAT YOU KNOW NOW. Also, I looove that Jaehee seconded my tsk tsk, because honestly, she knows. She feels my pain. WE ARE ONE IN THIS SUFFERING.
Like, for real. Seven gets it. (Jaehee was going on about how he has no choice because he is so attractive, but honestly . . . Jaehee pls . . . don’t defend Zen like this.)
I love how Seven points out that getting a gf will make Zen happy and Jaehee’s jealousy is still making it so that she’s passionately against this idea (because she feels she can’t date him herself, I think partially because her self-esteem is too low for her to actively pursue him). Like, it’s cute how she’s so into denying her feelings for hi---
TF, what did I ever do to you to make you drag me like this, Jaehee?! I thought we were friends! I thought we had some solid camaraderie! I can’t believe you would---no, you know what?
There. That is my reaction. WHAT AN INSULT.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t actually allowed to respond like that. Here were my choices:
I went with asking her if she was jealous because the tilde on “nothing like that” makes it sound flirty rather than a hard “no” like it needed to be. Thankfully, this worked out in my favor, and didn’t make it seem like I have feelings for Zen, which I absolutely do not.
Totally on board with Seven accusing Jaehee of sounding like the dean of a private school, because she does, haha. Like, I know why it is---it’s because she is jealous over Zen---but still, she can’t put up a “members can’t date each other rule” because that would block me from wooing Seven, and that’s no good. Fortunately, though . . .
YES, SEVEN, YES WE ARE MEANT TO BE, AND JAEHEE EVEN SHIPS IT, EVEN IF IT’S ONLY KEEP AWAY SHIPPING TO KEEP ME AWAY FROM ZEN, LOLOLOL. (Which is really unnecessary since I don’t even like Zen as a friend, much less a boyfriend, but . . .)
The guests can deal with it, tbh, because CLEARLY THIS IS THE ROMANCE OF THE CENTURY. ♥
Okay, so that’s the last of the screenshots from when I was still doing the casual route (and seriously, look at that---can you blame me for thinking that romancing Seven in the casual route was a legitimate possibility??). After that I restarted the game on the Deep Story, and so from here on out, the screenshots are from that.
And as you can see, this time I am not dicking around, I have come here to acquire one (1) boy and I am not wasting time. Fortunately, this one worked out in my favor as well . . .
I love him.
Okay, so this whole bit was so good and I’m so glad I picked the choice I did because I am wooing this boy like none other, but every binary translator I’ve used has that binary translate to gibberish, so?? Maybe it’s because this game was originally in Korean and the translators didn’t bother finding binary that actually translated to something in English, but what I actually said to him is lost to me, oh dear.
♥
Yes you are, Seven, and Yoosung, trust me . . . I could never get freaked out by him.
This was in response to Seven saying that he loves Elizabeth the 3rd, and Yoosung calling that love “twisted”, and then . . . look, I have to woo the boy, okay? Also, this is just funny, lmao. Look at him. I love him.
SAME, SEVEN. Seriously, Yoosung, wtf. Are you okay? Like, legitimately wondering here, because that’s just . . . a little awkward . . .
MEANWHILE, ON A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT NOTE . . . I am kind of sad that answering this way made it so that I can no longer invite the cat rescue people, as I would legitimately like to have them---but I finally had a choice that let me reveal my status as a dog lover to Jumin, so I had to take it. PUPPIES ARE IMPORTANT, TOO. I’M TIRED OF THIS CAT BIAS IN ANIME-STYLED MEDIA.
OKAY, SO LIKE . . . I think my game glitched a bit, because the text preview was something like “has your heart ever raced when you see someone” but then that message didn’t appear in the actual text message screen. Instead, there was just the one you see above, where Zen talks about people shrieking when he went outside. That said, the answer choices were still either about wanting to see Jumin, or my heart racing when I saw Seven . . . which of course I picked because I love Seven and want him to be my bf. It’s still funny, though, because it seems like I’m jut talking about my heart racing when I see Seven completely out of the blue, which . . . lololol. (And of course Zen thinks that Seven hacked my phone. No, Zen. I just really, really prefer him over you.)
SPEAKING OF JUMIN, THOUGH, I HAD A STRAIGHT UP “NOOOOO” WHEN THIS HAPPENED BECAUSE ASFDJSAFDASFDSA I DIDN’T MEAN TO HURT HIS FEELINGS!! The other answer choice was “I think he wants to be friends” which is wrong---Zen doesn’t want to be friends with Jumin, Zen is a jelly, homophobic asshole. So I figured I’d be honest and be like, “he’s trying to pick a fight because he doesn’t like you,” but somehow Jumin took that the wrong way and interpreted it as me agreeing with Zen and adsfkdsafds. I got the broken heart reaction over this and everything, damn. I called Jumin after this in an attempt at an apology. I felt so bad.
I’m also still in the process of walking Yoosung back since it’s way too easy to get his affection up. So therefore, I had to diss him a bit. That said, Yoosung, we are not inviting a bunch of outdated memes to The Party™, so drop that delusion right now.
We have the same favorite soda. It is Destiny™. (Well, truthfully I do prefer Pibb Xtra to Dr Pepper by a tad, but it’s basically the same soda.) Also, I do like how in other areas of the game it’s called PhD Pepper, lolol. Clever, clever.
And that’s all I’ve got for now! I should add that, in Day Two of the Deep Story, there was this “visual novel” bit in which this strange person talked about RFA being fake, and---well, here, here’s the dialogue (I’m not gonna grab screencaps because that’s too much effort, tbh):
“RFA’s party is fake. All that man V plans is just hypocritical trickery. My savior said to be especially careful. I must invite you all to the real party, and get rid of those traitors. That’s how my savior predicted the future, and I am only the messenger. Have fun . . . preparing for RFA’s last party. Their party may end up as the invitation to our party of paradise.”
Ominous™.
I’ve got quite a few suspicions that this person could, somehow, be Rika. Their face was covered, and though they were flat chested, that doesn’t mean a whole lot. They were dressed like they just got done walking out of Hot Topic, but that doesn’t mean a lot, either. What does mean a lot is the fact that we have yet to see a photo of Rika (Seven just keeps showing pictures of himself crossdressing---although, now that I think on it, maybe Zen showed a photo of Rika once? Can’t remember), and the question has been raised that maybe she’s not actually dead. It would make sense if she was the one who sent me to the apartment, given that Weirdo knew both the location and the security code, which not even V knew despite the fact that the apartment is in his name. This person talked about a “savior” (which would make sense if Rika was going to die, yet was then saved by someone), and also called the members of the RFA “traitors”, which could also make sense if Rika is mentally ill to a degree and sees the fact that the members of the RFA accepted me as a form of betrayal to her even though she’s the one who sent me there. So the idea that this person could be Rika really does make sense in every way . . .
. . . eeeexcept for the fact that the voice reading the dialogue sounded male. :/ That does throw a wrench in that idea.
As a side note, there is something else: So far, religion has been mentioned twice. Weirdo mentioned being a devout follower of a religion that demanded they do good by returning the phone personally, which is how I got sent to the apartment of the first place. Seven also mentions being a member of a religion multiple times (and Luciel is apparently his baptismal name---we don’t know what his name was before that). He also did find that the hacker who led me to the apartment (a.k.a. Weirdo) has ties to a religious organization as well. I had to admit it, but that does make me suspicious of Seven, even though I think the voice for the person in the VN bit sounded different from Seven’s, and their hair color was different, et cetera.
WELL! We’ll see. It’s interesting for sure. I have a lot less potential party guests this time than I did in the Casual Story, but I’m sure that can be fixed in Day Three. Hopefully, anyway. I’ve heard that ten are needed to get something other than the Bad End? Oh man . . .
Well, we’ll see how it goes from here. :)
