funniest thing about matt deathnote is that without reading the manga and without interacting with the fandom the amount of intellectual real estate he takes up in your experience of death note is infinitesimal. right up there with rester and gevanni and like, light's sister. nothing like the whiplash of watching death note for the first time in 2023 and having to figure out why unnamed 60 second anime boy is a disproportionately beloved collectively hallucinated fandom oc. truly the goncharov of yaoi

Widofjord Highlight Masterlist
While Lucien is asking what everyones goals are
Lucien: What about you?
Caleb: I’m not there, but only Lucien hears in his ear-
Travis, looking worried: Only Lucien?
Caleb: Yeah through the wire
Travis: Oh, ok, good good...
When the Nein return to the dome after talking with Lucien
Fjord: Y’know the last time we shared something we shared a vial of our blood and that did NO favors for us
Caleb: You know you don’t have to stand outside of the dome you can come inside of the dome
Fjord: Oh yeah, it’s uh, white colored...
Jester: Hey Caleb. Here’s your cat.
Caduceus: Here’s your ... shit
Caleb: *takes the mug* what.. is this?
Jester: Chewy shit!
Fjord: *haltingly* So... so good...
Sam: *pulls out his flask with a picture of Matt lookin evil on a carousel combined with travis to create travis’ mustachioed character from a project?*
The table: *various reactions of delight and confusion*
Liam: That’s just MATH!
Travis: mm.. Mmmhmm.
Right before the Nein go to bed
Beau: It’s easier to hate someone the less you know about them
Fjord: Facts
Caleb: You want to fax somebody?
Fjord: Yes *pretends to think really hard*
After Lucien shows Caleb and Beau the book for a few minutes
Matt: For the first time Caleb, even with your keen mind, you are having a hard time remembering what you just read
Fjord/Travis: *exasperated/horrified movement as he removes his hat and rubs his eyes in worry*
A little bit after that
Lucien: I’ve shown you something precious to me... now at least show me you still have it
Jester: Caleb, show him your wang
Caleb, without batting an eye: Fjord, show him my wang
Fjord, also without batting an eye: Yeah alright... I reach and pull out... from the bag of holding the amber
Lucien: *holds his hand out for it*
Fjord: *looks to Caleb for confirmation*
Caleb: *nods assent*
Fjord: *hands over the amber*
Lucien: Now why shouldn’t I just take this right now?
Caleb: If you hold onto it you won’t be able to stay in my tower tonight
Fjord: It is so warm in there :)
Jester: Lots of good food...
After Lucien gets them lost and they lose a day
Lucien: Alright we camp out for the night!
Jester: Do you want a tower?
Lucien, pointing at Caleb: If you don’t mind...
Caleb: Ja that is why we are friends
Fjord: *just grins cheekily at Caleb*
When they enter the tower
Fjord: Ahhh I prefer this so much mo- UP!!!
After leaving the Tomb Takers in their rooms, Caleb takes the Nein to the 8th floor
Caleb: You don’t have to say up, you can just...
Fjord: Don’t we? *smarmy look at Caleb*
Caleb: Well you have to
Fjord: UP!
Liam: Caleb makes a mental note that central chamber DOES NOT work for Fjord unless he says UP
Travis: *laughs hysterically* That’ll never be a problem
Liam: Everyone else is fine!
Caleb: As we float up to the 8th floor we come into a central nine sided chamber and there are nine doors. Numbered. Pick three.
Jester: How much do you think it’s weirding Lucien out that everything is 9  9 9 9 9
Caleb: A whole lot
Veth: Pick three?
Caleb: Yeah
Fjord: Three doors?
Veth: I’m going to pick door four
Beau: *quickly after Veth* Door nine.
Fjord: *also quickly trying to get his choice in* One.
Caleb shows them Astrids room behind door 4, then takes them to door 9 and describes the Nestled Nook
Fjord: *narrowed eyes as he realizes what might be behind door 1*
Caleb: Yeah so it’s almost dinner, and you said you wanted to see door number one...
Fjord: *stays silent*
Caleb: *pushes open door one*
Caduceus: Oh...
Caleb: *stands outside the door for a long moment*
Jester: *apprehensive* What is it...?
Caduceus: Home
Beau: Is it your childhood home?
Jester: Why did you put all of this at the top of your tower?
Caleb: Wherever I go.... they are with me
Jester: They are
Fjord: *soft voice* It’s so funny, they say you can never go home, but you’ve created an ingenious way to do just that.
Beau: But this is your first time being in this room
Jester: This would still be here, even if you didn’t make the rooms
Caleb: *uncomfortable* It’s just my way.... It’s just my way
Fjord: Was your room upstairs?
Caleb: *turns to give Fjord a tight smile and nod*
Fjord: Would you mind if I... *points up
Caleb: *smiles at Fjord again* Sure
Liam: Caleb goes to the steps, pauses, skips to the second step which creaks. Smiles a little bit. Then goes up.
Fjord/Travis: *short little amused laugh*
Liam: The loft is just a window, a small bed that would fit a teenager, and a little circle of rags
Fjord: All to yourself?
Caleb: Almost. *bamfs Frumpkin into the circle of rags*
Fjord: *smiles, then sees that Caleb is struggling with something and frowns*
Caleb: I’ve thought about it so much... I’ve thought about it so much. It probably isn’t a good idea to have this, but it’s just my way. I don’t think I’m allowed to forget it.
Caduceus: I don’t think you do, I don’t think this room will change that. I don’t want to speak to how smart you are but, it’s not that you’re doing it wrong you’re just not using it the right way.
Fjord: *confused*
Jester: It feels less like a memory and more like a punishment for yourself Caleb
Caleb: *distraught* If it exists here, it exists. It exists somewhere.
Caduceus: Even without here it would exist somewhere. What you’ve done here is beautiful, I hope you know that.
Fjord: *nods along in agreement*
Caleb: It is, it is, I have those memories, I have them, and I’ve struggled with it for a very long time. My feelings, about these things. There are good memories.
Caduceus: It only takes one bad one.
Caleb: I can’t help... *looks around at the others but lands on Fjord and stays there* ...wanting more.
Fjord: *nods gently*
Veth: Do you still wish to go back... and undo it?
Caleb: Of course.
Caduceus: Do you think Lucien has one of these rooms? Is that what’s happening? ... I don’t know. Maybe.
Caleb: Well... I understand that you all care for me very much. And I am very grateful for it. There is a part of me that will not- *cuts himself off*
Beau: Will not?
Caleb: So the tour is almost over, you wanted to see the ninth floor as well? Come along.
Veth: If that’s alright with you?
Caleb: Ja ja, it’s beautiful.
Beau: *stays behind and holds eye contact with Fjord for a long moment after the others leave*
Caleb calls for desert to be brought in
Caleb: One of the cats has a tray of cut fruit, and the other has a basin and a fountain of chocolate
Fjord: Holyyyyyy shit
After reminiscing about the cults they’ve dismantled
Fjord: Are we... relatively alone? Should we go somewhere else- another level, to avoid prying ears?
Caleb: We can distance ourselves but I’m assuming at any given moment we are more likely than not, he’s overhearing us
Fjord: I was going to ask if your tower offered any protection from prying ears, but also we should contact Essek and see where he’s stationed since it seems like we are closing in on Aeor
They discuss using the cats to hide what they are saying
Veth: To the Salon!
Fjord: UP
Caleb: It’s actually a floor down, so...
Fjord: Shit- DOWN!
Fjord: Ok so is this place battle ready? Can we trap them, or can it be damaged and they escape?
Caleb: Don’t worry about destroying anything, it will be reset to my liking.
Fjord: I meant more like can we trap them on a floor, keep them from leaving, restricting an entrance in and out of a room?
Jester: Anything that happens I mean he can cancel this tower...
Caleb: Right now there is not, but tomorrow there will be... if we imagine it
Fjord: *nods along: That’s what I meant... just a thought
Fjord uses his sword and notices they are being scried on
Fjord: Admittedly they have been kind of... nice? I figured they would have tried something by now but perhaps all of our... *casts around for the word and talks at Caleb* judgements were misplace?
Caleb: *eye contact with Fjord*
Veth: You view them as allies now, do you Fjord?
Fjord: I don’t know about that, but they seem to be at least participating in their half of the deal
Caleb: Well, they’ve been listening to us shit-talk them quite a bit on multiple nights, so... I don’t think there’s a lot of illusions here. *still talking to Fjord* It’s an uncomfortable alliance at best. But we are curious *now to the scrying eye* to see the end of the road. *to the cats* You can cut it. Cut it.
Travis: One prima donna cat is just *mimes singing dramatically*
They figure out the orb is following Yasha, then appears over Fjord
Caleb: I walk over to Fjord, and look up at where the scrying eye is, and kind of stand in front of [Fjord] so I can get in it’s view, and say what are we going to do here? We’re working together, you don’t really trust us, we don’t really trust you. You have some idea what you want to do to us. Are you having fun at least?
Matt: The orb disappears
Fjord: You’re actually looking a little off, but, it’s fine
Caleb: I was messing with it
Discussing how to fold Essek into the plan
Caleb: He’s told us to our face he bears more allegiance to us than any nation- whether that’s true or not...
Fjord: *sassy mmHMMM sound like he doesn’t believe it*
Caduceus trances to ask the wildmother questions and finds out Lucien doesn’t need them all alive
Fjord: Not ALL of us... angel-blood
Caleb: We’ve seen angel blood before *mimes tear tracks in reference to when they found the creepy ass weeping angel statues*
Fjord: *brain explosion as he realizes what Caleb means*
Back to discussing strategy which was like.... most of this episode. Waffling on decisions
Fjord: I’m a big fan of the home-field advantage, that’s the only reason I’m pushing to kick it off
Caleb: For those of us interested in getting our friend back- we don’t have a method. Our hope is to get to Aeor and find something there
Fjord: Ah
Caleb: Seems pretty thin
Fjord: *shakes head*
Matt: At this point Fjord notices the orb appear again
Fjord: *pretends to have an allergic reaction to alert the others*
Caleb: Several cats do now approach you at my telepathic bidding
Fjord: no no NO. NO!. No.
After Jester leaves to have cat adventures with Lucien
Caleb: Are we done for the night? Ja? Ok, I tell frumpkin telepathically to clog the arteries on five. Fjord, cover your eyes.
Fjord: *covers his eyes*
Caleb: Cat after cat after cat start vomiting up from the bottom-
Fjord/Travis: *plugs his ears as well*
Caleb: not in the room we are in! *holds out hand to Fjord* not in our room! in the central chamber it starts to fill with spectral cats
Caleb and Beau share a nightmare and shoot upright awake at the same time
Fjord: *points at the two, looking concerned* That’s... rare.
Beau: *grabs her notebook and starts scribbling*
Fjord: *stops pointing at her but keeps his hand up at Caleb, who rubs his eyes* What, what are you doing?
Beau: Shut-- just shut up, shh.. shhh sh sh
Caleb: *looks at Beau*
Beau: That’s not good.
Matt: Caleb, perception check
Caleb: I was also asking if anything I saw made any more sense... 18
Matt: As she’s sketching, you see on the back of her hand... a single red eye
The table: *loses their shit to varying degrees*
Travis: OH! OH! *looks angry and upset*
Beau: *unaware, continues sketching*
Caleb: St... Stop
Beau: What?
Caleb: *takes her hand and twists so its on top of his to show her*
Caleb: *checks the back of her neck but finds no other eyes*
Beau: *checks the back of his neck, nothing*
Beau: His arms- he had one on his arm
Liam: *to Travis* Check the gooch?
Travis: *breaks severity to laugh at Liam*
Liam: That’s the last place we’ll look
Caleb: *pulls off his shirt so he’s bare chest and arms to see if he has any eyes*
Fjord: *Nodding along and inspecting*
Matt: On his right shoulder you see an eye
Fjord/Travis: *leans back in exasperation and fear*

Things I Fucking LOVE About VLD S8
Katie watching freaking Defender of the Universe and marveling at how Pidge’s voice actor sounds.
Katie Holt looking adorable wearing ponytails.
Mrs. Holt totally momming Katie.
GIRL’S SHOPPING DAY GIRL’S SHOPPING DAY GIRL’S SHOPPING DAY!!! Getting together Nadia, Ina, Allura, Pidge, and Romelle?!!
Pidge and Nadia being such gaming nerds.
Pidge exploiting her fame as Pidge and dressing up as freaking Darrell Stoker / Retro Pidge. Like you have no idea how much I wanted to scream in happy seeing her with the old outfit and hairstyle, this is such a blessing. SUCH a blessing holy crow.
Tumblr media
Allura wearing one of her old outfits from the 1980s too! So many DOTU references this season!
Coran is having way too much fun with Lance.
Lance and Keith chilling out together on top of the lion watching the sunset and having a good convo. Look how far these two’s relationship has come. Look at them. It’s so good.
Dinner with Lance’s family is so pure.
The visuals with Allura and the tree are so beautiful.
Cute photograph moment!
There’s an entire episode dedicated to Honerva’s past, showing her struggling emotions now that she’s remembering everything that’s been, showing her internal conflict and struggle, giving us a clear and deep understanding of her hurt and hate.
Baby Lotor is fucking adorable. Like look at that kid. Look at those big eyes. Oh my gosh he’s adorable.
Lotor’s past is painful and it’s exactly the sort of crap I expected. Received no affection from his father. Was pushed into a Galra empire that didn’t value mercy. Watched the place he cultivated destroyed. Exactly the sort of thing I was expecting from his past to lead to his current state of mind as we meet him in S3. It shows how he’s someone who wants to revolutionize the empire, but is someone whose mind and ideas have been clearly influenced by his culture and upbringing.
I like how the robeasts have been developed throughout the series. How they clearly evoke the past ideas from DOTU/BKG of turning biological creatures into mechanized weapons. How the first season starts with Voltron doing lots of single episodes one-on-one fighting the robeasts, akin to the 1980s show. How the robeasts grow into an increasingly great problem by S8, and are now piloted by brainwashed Alteans. It’s a legitimately cool progression and makes the robeasts feel like a threat even while not repeating the same episode format over and over.
So many Altean warrior ladies on the forefront of Honerva’s forces.
“The Prisoner’s Dilemma” is a fan-fucking-tastic episode all around. One of my favorites for this season for sure.
It starts with Voltron, the ATLAS, the rebels, and the MFEs working together to take down a base. This is an amazing fight moment. It’s showing how far everyone has come since the start, how much they’ve grown, and it sings. And it’s showing REALLY cool team coordination. This is like. All around epically cool I fucking love it.
Matt Holt and his ponytail <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
I love how this episode focuses on trying to end the Galra Empire’s remaining power but also trying to show mercy to the Galra. I love how it shows a Galra leader who’s had help from Voltron before still being doubtful - and how more acts from Voltron bring him around. It takes time to convince someone who’s been part of the Galra Empire that Voltron is okay to ally with - and it shows how the Voltron Coalition is gaining ground.
There is some serious nice creepy tension in this episode.
KEITH BLASTING THROUGH THE DOOR WITH EPIC BIG GUN!
Tumblr media
I love how Lance’s characterization feels like they took him and turned him more into his DOTU self over the course of the series. Honestly, as with all of them! The characters grow into those positions and selves.
“Battle Scars” is probably the episode that got me the most emotional. Olkarion is a planet and culture I loved, too. Watching it fall - watching that beautiful planet actually get destroyed along with many of its citizens - was painful. This is a good way to show Honerva’s power and the high-stakes dangers of her actions.
The idea of Pidge watching the past to learn what happened was a cool narrative effect, and also had good long-term story arc development since she learned how to track the robeasts, too.
Also amazingly good lesson / theme for that episode.
“The Grudge” is another cool episode that’s got the unique twist of the Paladins relying not on their typical weapons, but on having to be resourceful with the minimum. Another good, original premise.
Acxa and Veronica. Acxa and Veronica. Oh my gosh Acxa and Veronica. Acxa and the rest of the MFEs. Acxa and the humans. It’s so great. Acxa saying everything and it’s coming out SUPER edge-lord and everyone’s trying to figure out how to handle it.
Tumblr media
I fucking love Ina Leifsdottir. I love her personality so much. And I’m 99% sure the writers intended her as autistic representation and I think they did a good job with her.
Okay but this season really has a lot of fun with the MFEs. They don’t steal the show and take too much time, but we get a GREAT sense of personality from them. Rizavi and Kincade together is a delightful combo. I love her energy and love of action. I love his nerdy passions. They’re so fun.
Let’s be real: one thing Voltron does consistently well is that, no matter how much screen time we have with a character, we get a GREAT sense of their personality, and we love them. There are so many different, lovable, often quirky personalities in Voltron. It’s so rich with its character personalities. I love how there’s a broad cast of characters and yet I can still connect to them all.
I appreciate how S8 wrapped up the story of Lotor’s generals. It would have been easy to have them die, just be casualties, and not have them or their narrative go anywhere. Instead, we get a wrap-up. They’ve been through a lot of twists, turns, and confusing life choices. Now they finally find a place. I like that Lotor’s team (who followed a man who was extremely misguided but wanted some good things) ended up being able to find a productive cause in the end.
SPACE GALRA LESBIANS RETURN!
I honestly love the dynamic of ATLAS + Voltron. The Castle of Lions is really cool and I felt extremely sad and nostalgic when they lost it. But ATLAS + Voltron has a legitimately awesome sci-fi, mission-oriented dynamic. The Castle of Lions felt like there was always a home, whereas ATLAS gives the sense of being in space on a journey and mission. It gives me Vehicle Force Voltron vibes, ESPECIALLY with the inclusion of the MFEs.
Speaking of the 80s show and retro Voltron references, we got Merla!
This season focuses a bloody fuckton on Allura, but it shows a lot of depth and conflicted thoughts with her. It shows her as a woman of power. It shows her as someone tempted with problematic solutions or darker powers. It shows her loving, being loved, finding family, and marching ever-steady onward with her purpose. There’s a lot of complex psychology with how Allura’s handling these latest events and it’s written in a way we can understand exactly why she’s making the choices she does, good and bad.
“One... two... three... ALUMINUM!”
I love how Sam Holt overall gives Slav good respect for his more “superstitious”-esque approaches to things, and also valuing Slav for his powerful mind and abilities.
Lots of things from earlier seasons get remembered - Olkarion, Slav, Matt Holt, Shay, the Balmera, and more - and continue to play out in the final conflicts.
I legitimately love seeing Voltron team up with ATLAS in its transformed form. Shiro and Keith working completely equally. Keith’s become a fully-fledged leader. Shiro’s got hoards of respect and leadership power. Together everyone coordinates and kicks butt.
HOW have I not mentioned the visuals yet in this season? This was the most colorful and visually appealing season in Voltron YET - and we’ve been given season after season of really beautiful images. I love how, even though Voltron is set in SPACE, which is so full of voidness, we get so much color and light and appealing color pallets. Voltron is a visual delight.
“Day Forty-Seven” has got to be one of my favorite episodes of this season, if not a stand-out for the entire series to me. Some people might feel differently about this episode than me, but I honestly find it so unique and fun. It’s legitimately hard to try to write an episode following one camera for twenty minutes, while also telling a coherent story. And yet it DOES. We get a good narrative - while at the same time it feels so REAL. “Day Forty-Seven” gives us the ability to watch the entire ATLAS crew work, and allows us to watch Voltron from an outsider’s perspective as they go on dangerous missions - without the music, fanfare, camera angles, etc. And it’s so amusing getting everything from a dog carrying a camera around to Rizavi being upset that yeast is part of the documentary. And it shows so many characters and character dynamics and a sense of a full crew where everyone knows each other. And Rizavi and Kincade together are such a DELIGHT. And oh my goodness I could gush incoherently about this episode for a long time. It’s so much fun.
Tumblr media
Keith and Hunk stuck on a musical ride. Love it.
The bargaining Pidge and her mom do!!! The Holt family photograph!
Epic arm wrestling competition is epic. And I love how it all started because Shiro felt abashed being called “old.” Poor guy’s still in his 20s! And I love how it turned into all of Team Voltron CELEBRATING THE FUCK out of Shiro winning. Like, these guys have fought countless dangerous foes across the universe. And these dorks get over-the-top excited at Shiro’s accomplishment of winning an arm wrestling competition at a fair.
I laughed so hard at the Warden talking about how he found a purpose in arm wrestling.
The Voltron team joining up with the original Voltron team was pretty cool. I also love how it was animated where we would see the original Team branching off like apparitions out of Voltron, or how we’d see the pilots in the cockpit fading from one to the other.
Allura and Alfor reunion!!! I think this was done right. I am not a fan of stories where a character seems to lose someone, only for that person to magically be brought back. In this case, given the location of where Allura and Alfor unite, we know they’re not going to be able to resume a life of father and daughter. It’s a temporary reunion, and it happens a VERY LONG time after we’ve suffered through all of Allura’s pain in VLD about leaving Alfor behind. It doesn’t compromise the integrity of all the seasons that have come before it about their loss of Alfor and the Alteans, but it also gives us a touching moment of Allura seeing someone she’d never thought she’d see again.
VLD S8 shows that people aren’t cut-and-dry “always evil.” It shows how it’s a complex combination of your environment and your choice. Zarkon isn’t someone who is innately evil pure and simple, nor is Honerva, nor is Lotor. It also makes sure to remind us of the power of choice. Zarkon and Honerva also aren’t JUST victims of the entity - S8 reminds us that they pursued quintessence and poor choices that led to further bad consequences, too. And just because someone might not have been a villain with alternate choices, and just because someone DID become a villain... S8 reminds us that they still took this particular path. It doesn’t erase that Lotor might have wanted to make some positive differences, but turned into a villain. It looks at the complexity of people, how they have both goodness and badness within their potentials. And... it lets it be shown that just because you make a bunch of bad decisions doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to leave those choices and turn around. People aren’t “just evil.”
How have I not yet mentioned I love the uniforms that the Paladins wear when they’re not in their Lions?
THE ATLAS-VOLTRON FUSION. THE ATLAS-VOLTRON FUSION. THE ATLAS-VOLTRON FUSION. THAT IS AWESOME AS FUCK!
Tumblr media
The S3 idea of alternate realities gets brought back in QUITE the way as Voltron chases Honerva through many realities.
I appreciate how Honerva spends so much time trying to find the perfect reality... and when she thinks she’s found it, it doesn’t do what she wants. It’s exactly what we would respect she’d reap. You can’t just tear across space and time to find happiness. At the same time, we can also feel her pain.
Okay but Honera? I love her armor in this season too. Man I just. Love lots of what people wear this season.
I love Allura’s send-off. I love that the stakes got so high in VLD that we had to lose a main character, but not in a way that felt like a painful death. I love that Voltron was willing to give us a concrete ending where there’s no “going back” to the way things were before. I love that they still give us a sense of hope and growth even with the hurt of losing a main character. I love how it takes Allura, who always had such a strong sense of responsibility, and act on that responsibility in the most responsible and selfless choice possible. I love that she got to embrace every Paladin and say how much they mean to her. I love that they cried. I love how this was done. That’s a proper send-off, one filled with heroicism and selflessness and responsibility and power and strength and emotional pain and also a sense of HOPE.
There are some fucking powerful quotes this season.
I love how we got Altean Lance? Like honestly, when I first heard fans theorizing about it, I thought it was wishful fantasy and the typical desire for AU characters. But the way this was incorporated into VLD actually in canon was really cool.
I love seeing Pidge create Chip. DOTU REFERENCE!!!!!
I love how the Galra Empire has been shown fracturing for seasons, and how it’s finally come to a point Keith can naturally talk about needing change - and it’s believable to think that the Galra would now be open to this change happening.
I love seeing the entire team together after everything’s ended.
I love how in S2 characters talked about defeating the Galra Empire would mean that Voltron was no longer needed. I love how the writers stick with that. I love how the Paladins choose to retire from being Paladins, but intentionally go forth to make the universe a brighter place - there’s still so much to do. I love how the lions themselves choose to fly away.
I love seeing their selfies. I love that they intentionally make sure Allura’s in their Paladin team reunion selfies. I love seeing how the characters age.
Tumblr media
I love how Keith’s hair just keeps growing.
I love that ENORMOUS fucking Vehicle Force Voltron reference with the Holts! Holy crap! I’m actually seeing characters like Cliff and Wolo in the background!!! And given the premise of Vehicle Force Voltron seeking out a new planet after humanity has contacted alien civilizations, it feels entirely fitting that this is how Vehicle Force Voltron gets incorporated into the VLD timeline.
I love how the Holts, such a POWERFULLY BRILLIANT family, are the people who keep exploring technology and build the next round of Legendary Defenders.
I love seeing how Hunk’s passion for cooking isn’t treated as trivial. It’s treated as a means of creating intergalactic peace and happiness. He uses it as a way to treat the Alteans with kindness when they’re prisoners on the ATLAS. He uses it to create a culinary revolution after Honerva’s defeated. Hunk is revolutionizing society and making an enormous positive difference because of his passion. That’s majorly epically awesome like fuck I LOVE it.
I love everyone’s endings, honestly. I love how Lance chooses a quieter ending. He wanted a lot of glory as a fighter pilot at the start of VLD S1. He grows into someone so much more mature. Now he’s someone who understands he’s impacted the universe. He’s willing to talk to Alteans at school and spread positive messages with the people in his life. But he’s also taking quiet time for himself. The homesick boy from the early seasons isn’t feeling that more - he has a concrete embedded home to return to, valuing family ever onward. And it’s all embedded in him surrounding himself in the memory of people like Allura he’s held dear. It’s bittersweet and one that happens when someone you love is gone, but it’s not a sad ending, and it’s one that will turn into a lot of happiness, peace, and meaning. This boy’s got a good ending.
I love that we even see where Krolia and Kolivan end up.
And dude. Keith continuing to work with the Blade of Marmora but turning it to humanitarian relief??? This guy’s amazing. So amazing.
I’m a Sheith shipper but I never expected a canon-concrete Sheith end game, so I’m totally happy seeing Shiro’s ending. They gave this guy the happiness he needed. This is someone who’s been trapped in war for so long. He’s had to work so hard without break because of the necessity of defending the universe. This is someone who can finally leave the battlefield and rest. Anyone who thinks for a second Shiro and Keith are any less close just because it’s not romantic is kidding themselves - their relationship shall be as pure and close and powerful and deep as always. And we get an on-screen gay kiss! An on-screen queer marriage!
This is a good ending in that it wraps up all the conflict... but it gives us a look at the hope of the future for everyone’s lives.
I’m here to spread positivity and excitement for the good Voltron Season 8 did. A show doesn’t have to be “perfect” (nothing’s perfect) to be awesome, meaningful, and enjoyable. This show has been SUCH a wonderful ride, start to finish, and I can’t be more grateful to have been an audience member for this story. It’s going to last as one of my favorite animated series of all time.

Weekly Voltron Fic Recs #42
Please be aware that I am no longer noting Season Three spoilers.
Rules: You can find past weekly rec lists here, and non-list recs in my general fic rec tag. Also follow @maychorianrecs for individually tagged posts, the easier to search and reblog. This is stuff I like, and I have a huge bias toward Lance, hurt/comfort, and general fluff, in that order. Gen unless otherwise noted. Please comment on the fics if you read and enjoy them!
Unknown by BossToaster (ChaoticReactions) Words: 17,643 Author’s Summary: As Shiro enters his fourth year at Hogwarts, there’s a lot he doesn’t know about his future. As he tries to figure out what he wants and what he needs, Professor Coran comes to him to ask for a favor: to help tutor one of the first years in Transfiguration. Shiro agrees, and sets himself down a path he’d never expected for himself. A remix of Unafraid by Buttered_onions My Comments: Absolutely delightful Harry Potter AU in which young Shiro gradually gathers a small flock first years who adore him to tiny bits. I love how protective Shiro becomes almost the instant he meets each of these adorable kids. Matt and Allura are fantastic as his supportive and mischievous best friends, too.
The Blue Paladin by CalicoPudding Words: 2,680 Author’s Summary: He didn’t ask to go to space, not like this anyway. And sure, it was fun and exciting and new when they first arrived, but it’s clear now that they can’t just go back home. They’re Voltron, the defender of the universe. And they’re fighting a very real threat. A threat that could kill them if they aren’t careful. My Comments: Lance is not dealing with his homesickness, and then Blue’s rejection makes it a whole lot worse.Thank goodness for Pidge and Hunk chasing him down and refusing to leave him alone.
Day 5: Insomnia by GemmaRose Words: 1,806 Author’s Summary: Without a regulating light cycle, the average human circadian rhythm settles to a 22 hour cycle. Going under that is… difficult. My Comments: Poor Hunk has a rough time adjusting to space. Good thing his team notices and won’t let it continue.
Thrall Song by ElementKitsune Words: 1,709 Author’s Summary: The name is Takashi Shirogane. (that’s the first thing you’ll forget) OR Shiro gets captured by the fae. (It’s an experience) My Comments: Surreal, dreamlike fantasy AU where it’s the fae who capture and use Shiro instead of the Galra. Good thing the team is there to save him.
You do not Need to see our Identification by The Curator of The Sands (GrimRevolution) Words: 6,886 Author’s Summary: She was looking for information so she went alone. She didn’t come back that way. She almost didn’t come back at all. My Comments: Really fun way for Pidge to meet up with Matt, both in the middle of their own mission on a base. In the melee, Pidge gets injured and Matt gets her back to the team. Lots of actions, lots of feels.
A Long Rain by Bandity Words: 3,467 Author’s Summary: It’s a search and rescue mission and Lance is happy to be out in the rain, but he really doesn’t understand why Keith hates it so much. My Comments: Oof, this is quite the double whammy, with Lance getting physically sick and Keith struggling with PTSD in a major way. They both need to get out of the rain.
If I Can Live Through This by BossToaster (ChaoticReactions) Words: 6,804 Author’s Summary: There are some problems Shiro can’t go to the team for, for a variety of reasons. But for those times, there’s Sam and Matt. A direct sequel to Beast You’ve Made of Me My Comments: Great installment for a fantastic series. Love Sam and Matt being supportive of Shiro when it’s difficult, and especially when it’s difficult for him to ask.
The Opposite of a Furry Little Problem by Omnicat Words: 1,412 Author’s Summary: Shiro isn’t Shiro, he says. Shiro isn’t safe, he says. The space mice will decide that for themselves, thankyouverymuch. My Comments: Ahhhh, so adorable! The space mice decide that even if this isn’t quite Shiro, he still needs company and comfort. I want more fics like this.
Waiting for the Dam to Break by saababa Words: 14,702 (3/?) Author’s Summary: It took a whole month to track down the Galra ship that had captured Lance. A whole month of frustration, guilt and dead-end leads before the remaining paladins could launch their rescue. It only took a month for Lance to lose his mind. My Comments: Ooh, great aftermath fic. Intense so far, with wonderful characterization and a lot of emotion. I’m really looking forward to seeing where this one goes.
The Helpless Dark by Bandity Words: 2,149 Author’s Summary: Lance is trapped and awaiting rescue, but he’s not as alone as he thought he was. My Comments: Oh, golly. Lance with children is always a treat, and we get hurt Lance on top of it, trying to keep a tiny alien calm while they wait for help. Lovely comforting with Hunk later, too.
Can’t Touch This by SerenePhenix Words: 1,777 Author’s Summary: No one touches the mice. No one. Author’s Summary: That monster hurt the space mice, holy crap. D: I get kind of desensitized to human characters getting hurt in fiction, so somehow this is worse. No worries, though, there is vengeance, and lots of concern and love at the end.
Stick Like Glue by Arisprite Words: 6,895 Author’s Summary: An uninhabited alien forest calls to Lance for exploration, and who better to ask to come along than Keith? So, maybe everyone else said no first, but Keith and Lance are actually not having too bad a time. Add in some jewels, glue, and a giant monkey, and we’ll see how it goes. My Comments: Really fun adventure fic with Lance and Keith getting into and out of trouble and actually enjoying each other’s company. I love seeing their friendship develop, despite all the bumps along the way.
Don’t Worry About It by genericfanatic Words: 3,949 Author’s Summary: 5 times Hunk told Lance not to worry about it and one time he should have worried. My Comments: Warning for attempted suicide. Oh gosh, this was a rough read. If it hadn’t been for the second chapter I don’t think I could have taken it. But I loved protective Hunk doing his best to heal and support his emotionally wounded friend.
01001000 01100101 01101100 01110000 by The Curator of The Sands (GrimRevolution) Words: 1,226 Author’s Summary: It wasn’t even her voice, wasn’t hers and was wrong, it was wrong, it was wrong, wrong, wrong. One foot moved forward. No, no, she didn’t want to, she didn’t want to she didn't— Walk. She walked. My Comments: Really intense fic with Pidge being mind-controlled, then feeling a complete loss of control and autonomy afterward. Lance tries to help and does his best, but it’s a rough time for Pidge and nothing is really fixed by the end.
Ship to Wreck by Engineer104 Words: 3,544 Author’s Summary: It’s always the same. Katie Holt loses her family. Pidge Gunderson emerges to get them back. This time, she sets sail for the New World. My Comments: Really fun AU with Team Voltron in the Age of Sail. I loved all of the character choices and the richness of the descriptions. Just need more, that’s all.
The Cost of War by heroami Words: 1,257 Author’s Summary: And then it hit Lance just how young Pidge really was. Kids her age – our age, a voice which sounded a lot like Hunk, reminded him – should be worrying about school and their first kiss. Not whether or not their friends would survive the day. My Comments: Sweet, heartachey missing scene set after Return to the Balmera. Pidge is having trouble processing and she goes to Lance, even though they’re not quite friends yet. Fortunately, Lance welcomes her in with open arms. Love that platonic cuddling.
All the Stars Go Dark by nightwalker Words: 33,330 Author’s Summary: The Garrison was abandoned. Shiro didn’t know what he’d expected. He’d known when he started out that nowhere was safe anymore, and he’d had no reason to believe the Garrison would be any different. But he’d held onto that hope in the face of all evidence. My Comments: Hoo boy, this fic is a non-stop thrill ride. I knew I was going to enjoy it, and I REALLY did. Shiro coming back alone to the Garrison to search for survivors (and his brother) after a year of zombie apocalypse is already a tense scenario, but then once he actually MEETS those survivors, and then all the twists and turns, the things that are eventually revelead, and even the ending, oohhhh man, non-stop rollercoaster from start to finish. Definitely some horror, mostly because of what people do instead of zombies, but Shiro is going to take care of these kids he found surviving in the desert NO MATTER WHAT. I really, really enjoyed this fic.
the weight grew golden by uraa Words: 7,698 Author’s Summary: Through the window, Takashi saw a head of unruly black hair, golden skin and soft dark eyes. Oh, he thought. Even from a distance, he could tell. My Comments: What a gorgeous fic. This isn’t quite my childhood, but close enough for the nostalgia to be pretty overwhelming. I could really feel the weight of that summer heat, and the joy of a summer storm. Shiro’s instant adoption of new neighbor Keith was adorable, and it was also fun to see them both hanging out with the Holt siblings. What a lovely group of kids.
Fever Days by Bandity Words: 2,280 Author’s Summary: Keith was always good at being alone. A fever didn’t change that. My Comments: Poor Keith. Good to see the others taking care of him, especially after he starts hallucinating about Shiro. I especially loved Lance in this, supportive but willing to call Keith out when he’s doing something harmful to himself.
Snow Drop by Bandity Words: 3,420 Author’s Summary: A storm is raging and Pidge fights to get an injured Lance to safety. My Comments: Fantastic Pidge and Lance friendship. They both have to work together to get each other out of a very dangerous situation. The cuddling at the end was lovely.
Alsanum by Lobo_Loca Words: 11,841 Author’s Summary: [“Alsanum?” Lance asked. “What’s that?” “Our biggest festival, which celebrates the lights the goddess Alma bestowed upon the first Alteans. Five nights of lights, food, and games to remind us of the gifts we’ve been given,” explained Coran.] In need of a break from the war against the Galra, Coran suggests reviving a traditional Altean light festival. The Paladins team up with Coran to put on the festival, and decide to surprised Allura while they’re at it. My Comments: I adore all of the thought and creativity that went into the building of this fic. It’s lovely to see the team enjoying a holiday together and sharing their cultural heritage, and there’s the bonus focus on Coran’s grief for his lost family. Bittersweet and lovely.
And live inside each scene by Resamille Words: 1,292 Author’s Summary: “Well no,” says Lance over the comms. “Most people don’t intend to get shot.” My Comments: Ouch, poor Pidge. Good thing Lance and Keith are there.
Day 3: Blood Loss by GemmaRose Words: 1,496 Author’s Summary: In Which Zarkon Is Injured And Alfor Refuses To Give Up On His Friend. My Comments: Strong warrior friendship, holy crow, look at it. It feels so true to them now, and that’s the weirdest thing.

MT: WWE Monday Night RAW (5/1/17) Review!
What’s going to happen to the roster after WWE Payback? No, seriously, what is going on right now. Payback was weird. Either way, read on to find out in this edition of “Matt Talks!”
Coronation of new RAW Women's Champion
This was weird. I'm not even referring to the content itself, just because its happening. Angle isn't a heel GM, and is he going to do this for every title change? From the way Bliss' promo sounded, she probably just kept on hounding him for it until he gave in.
Every other part of this segment was great. Bliss completely tearing down everyone other than Nia Jax was gold, and it will make it that much sweeter when Bayley beats Bliss for the title in the future.
Bayley, Sasha Banks, Dana Brooke, & Mickie James vs Alexa Bliss, Nia Jax, Dark Emma, Alicia Fox
Man, there really aren't a lot of female faces/babyfaces on RAW. When you have Mickie James on your face team, there might be a problem. Other than that, it was a match that tried to give everyone some screen time, which I liked, and I think they actually did a good job of that. I was worried it was only going to be a five minute match, but they really tried when making this one.
Luke Gallows vs Enzo
The beatdown at the beginning was a good moment to make The Club look good after losing at Payback, but why do I want to see this match at all? I love both teams, but do something to make this different. I know that The Revival is on the shelf, but build up another tag team in the mean time. Make a new one out of two superstars. Maybe that's what they're planning with Crews and Titus. Do something so these two teams can take a bit of a break in fighting each other.
Neville is King and TJ Perkins is not
Neville mentions to TJ Perkins that he is King and Perkins is not.
What is next for Seth Rollins?
That is a good question, isn't it? Will it be the Intercontinental title, or the Universal one? When Finn showed up, I actually thought they were going to have the two fight to finish up their feud, but without the title. Thankfully, Miz and Ambrose came out to make a match that we will talking about for a long time.
Tony Neese, The Brian Kendrick & Noam Dar vs Jack Gallagher, Akira Tozawa & Rich Swann
I was actually a fan of the Cruiserweights being in six man tag matches when they first debuted, but now it seems tired. They haven't done it in a while, but it still feels problematic, because most of these stories haven't been developed on RAW. So if the fans in attendence haven't seen 205 Live, then they are completely lost, and this is boring to them. Sadly, it did seem like the crowd felt that way, because they generally seemed silent throughout the match, minus a few bursts of energy here and there.
Cesaro and Sheamus are mean now
I'll say that I don't think this was necessary, but it happened. So let's talk about the good and the bad. I think Cesaro can actually play a good heel, and Sheamus has always been a better heel than a face, but the crowd was clearly not into this heel turn. They have no problem booing Sheamus, but WWE isn't going to get the same reaction they would get 10-20 years ago, or even 5 years ago. People know what's going on, and they will express their displeasure with Cesaro's turn by just staying silent.
The Hardyz were rather lackluster during this appearance. Sure, they did the "DELETE" gesture, but they were lacking any other SPLENDIDLY BROKEN mannerisms, so it didn't really pack an oomph. I think this was the time for them to look a bit more BROKEN, unless there is another beatdown coming that can trigger something in them.
Miz & Maryse Interview
Miz arrogant, despite him not fighting Seth much in the past, and never fighting Balor before, proclaims his victory, even in the face of Dean Ambrose. AMBROSE SIGNS OFF END SCENE
Heath Slater vs Apollo Crews
I am a fan of the whole "opposites attract" tag team concept, but they have been doing it far too much recently, and there are too many in the RAW Tag Team division. Technically, Crews isn't teamed up with Titus yet, so hopefully they don't do that, and just keep Titus as Crews' "wacky manager", because we already have Slater & Rhyno, Golden Truth, and Cesaro and Sheamus as the "opposites attract" type of team. As for the match itself, it wasn't the best, it wasn't the worst, it was a match. The biggest issue is putting a face who is getting a mild reaction against another face who has an over chant, and expecting the crowd to actually like the first face. I think this has a lot of potential, but if WWE keeps on handling it this way, then this is going to crash and burn for Crews.
Kurt Angle is scared ft. Bray Wyatt
This was a nice way to reintroduce Bray Wyatt to a RAW crowd. As nice as it was, it wasn't new territory, and you start to wonder if the character itself is cursed, and he has to keep reliving his "Fear Me!" monologues as if this were a bearded version of "Groundhog Day"
Dean Ambrose Interviews Seth Rollins
Ambrose is a delight, and this is a smart way to reference the history between these two while still building Rollins as a face. There was a point in my life where I thought this could never happen, and that the fans would hate Rollins just by being next to Ambrose, but it turns out I was wrong.
Austin Aries vs TJ Perkins
This crowd was on fire for this match, which is a testiment to how entertaining Aries is and how good of a heel Perkins has been. Despite me not enjoying a babyface Aries, I will say that his charisma transcends his face/heel alignment. The match slowed down when it came back from commercial, and while the crowd was still vocal, it doesn't look like they were fans of Austin Aries doing the standard "babyface selling" and him trying to "overcome" said injuries. Either way, both the match and after match beatdown is a great way to make people hate Perkins even more than they did when he was a face.
Dean Ambrose Interviews Finn Balor w/donut
Finn Balor needs carbs, and Dean Ambrose is the one to provide. That's all the analysis I need for that one.
ELIAS SAMSON SIGHTING #5
"The Drifter" Elias Samson was spotted not playing Pearl Jam near Dean Ambrose. We will update you on more "Drifter" news when it becomes available to us.
Golden Truth pitches movie idea that will probably end up as a Netflix Original
In all seriousness, they talked to Angle and helped set up a #1 Contender's match for the RAW Tag Team Titles. This is what I've been waiting for. If you've been reading Matt Talk for the last few weeks, that's all I've been talking about. I'm excited.
Seth Rollins vs Finn Balor vs The Miz
This match was a hell of a lot of fun, and something the fans needed. While I am the first one to say that I don't want the matches looking too good on free TV, for fear of injury, fans needed a fresh matchup. The issues stemmed from some potential botches on Rollins end. Luckily, while Rollins hitting his head on the barricade and landing on his neck after the crossbody looked bad, there's no reports on any injuries. While I normally don't like shenanigans, we know that these three are going to fight a lot this upcoming year, so its good to give Miz the win via interference, set up Bray vs Balor, and continue Rollins vs Joe. Overall, it was a great finish, and the perfect way to set up Miz vs Ambrose.
We hope you liked this edition of “Matt Talk!” Tune in next time, when Matt Talks about WWE Smackdown LIVE!
