You're right that if you did just find the sum of all the little dx bits you would just get x, but if you imagine a graph y=f(x), and you want to find the area underneath that line, you split it into lots of little rectangles of width dx then add them together. She was stretched out on the long couch, her legs bent upward at the knee, bare feet waving idly as she read. “In order to calculate y, you must use the information given to determine the rest of the equation mx+b,” she murmured aloud, blonde eyebrows drawn down in a frown of concentration. “Slope is indicated by —“

“Math was a lot easier before they started introducing the alphabet into it, wasn’t it?”

She jumped, bolting into a sitting position even as her head whipped around toward the door. The teenage boy standing there leaned casually against the frame, hands in his pockets and dark eyes regarding her with interest.

“I —“ Her gaze went guiltily to the book, and back to him. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to start riffling through your books. I just — I’d never heard of this kind of mathematics before, and I thought it was… interesting.”

Roy’s eyebrows lifted in surprise. “You understood all that?”

“Not a word.”

“Good, that makes two of us.” He stood straight and entered the room. “I mean, I can get the right answers, but I don’t always know how I’ve done it. Unfortunately, there’s a good amount of mathematics involved in alchemy.”

Closing the book, Riza held it out to him with a small smile. “Probably best you hold on to this, then. I think you’ll need it a lot more than I will. I’ll take literature over the sciences any day.”

He looked at her curiously as she stood. “Any science at all?” A nod. “Not even alchemy? With your dad to teach you, I bet —“

Those brown eyes turned hard and cold in the space of an instant, causing the rest of his sentence to stick in his throat. Riza brushed past him in the icy silence, shoving the book into his arms as she passed. “Especially alchemy,” she said quietly, halfway to the door. “Not from him, not from anyone. Not ever.”

When he knocked on her bedroom door that night, it was a quiet sound, meant to be entirely deferential. “Riza? Are you busy?” He waited for an answer, but none came. Steeling himself, he opened the door anyway.

She was sitting on the bed, a book open on her drawn up knees. Her eyes weren’t on the pages; they were glaring hotly at him. Her voice, when she spoke, was dangerously soft. “I don’t believe I gave you permission to enter, Mr. Mustang.”

Roy swallowed hard, but closed the door behind himself. “No, you didn’t. But I wanted to apologize for whatever I did to offend you earlier, and I can’t do that if you keep avoiding me and hiding behind closed doors.” He shrugged uneasily, even though the fire was starting to fade from her glare. “I don’t know what I did, but… I’m sorry.”

Riza hesitated visibly, before closing her book and setting it aside. "I'm sorry, too. I shouldn't have snapped at you like that. It wasn't fair of me."

Both were quiet, not sure what came next, until Roy pointed toward the chair at her desk. "May I?"

"Sure."

As he sat, he pulled a folded square of paper from his pocket. "If there's one thing I think understand from earlier," he said carefully, "it's why you don't want to learn alchemy from your father." He looked up. "I get it. He's kind of... kind of nuts on the subject, you know?"

She was watching him warily, but she wasn't angry. Not yet, anyway. "I think the word you're looking for is 'obsessed,' but go on."

"Right. And I can see how, if you got started with alchemy, learning from him, and decided it wasn't your thing.... Well, he probably wouldn't let you quit very easily." He cracked a smile. "And you don't strike me as the sort of person who reacts very well to being forced into something."

Her expression hadn't changed. "Is there a point to all of this? I've already told you, I don't have any interest in -"

"I just don't understand why you wouldn't want to learn at all. Aren't you just the least bit curious?"

For a long moment, all she did was stare. Roy waited, trying not to show in his expression the nervousness rolling around in the pit of his stomach. If he crossed another invisible line like earlier, Riza would be weeks in forgiving him, instead of hours. Brown eyes darted once toward the door - either checking for fear of her father, or perhaps contemplating escape.

"I -" She seemed to regain control of herself from her surprise, gaze coming back to him. "Curiosity and a willingness to dabble in alchemy are two very different things. Just because I have one, doesn't mean I have the other."

"And why don't you?"

Her only answer for a moment was another long stare... and this time, she wasn't quite so good at hiding her expression. For one brief second, before she locked it down, Roy saw the fear.

"Riza... what are you afraid of?"

Her gaze went to the door again, and stayed there. "I don't... I don't want to end up like him. Obsessed with something to the point where I forget where I am or what I'm doing, where I forget to look after myself or those around me...." She shuddered. "I don't want it to be that way for anything."

"...You're afraid to lose yourself?" When she nodded, her eyes on the floor, he got to his feet. "Here...."

He pulled her to her feet, wrapping his arms around her shoulders. "Riza, that alone tells me that it would never happen to you. I've seen you lose track of time before, but nothing like what happens to your father." He turned his head, pressing his cheek against her hair. "You're far too in control of yourself to let something like that happen. You probably have the best self-control I've ever seen."

She pushed gently against his chest, pulling away just far enough to look up at him. "You're sure?"

Roy grinned. "Absolutely. And besides, if you ever started to fall a little too deeply into something like that, you know I'd pull you out."

The smile she returned only lasted a moment, before she seemed to realize she was alone in her room with his arms around her, and eased away. One hand tucked a strand of hair self-consciously behind her ear as she looked to the folded square of paper still in his hand. "So what's that for?"

"Oh." Opening it up, he showed her the transmutation circle drawn there. "I was hoping, if I could talk you into being less afraid if it, maybe I could get you to actually try transmuting something."

Riza simply smiled. "Curiosity and a willingness to dabble are two different things," she reminded him. "Ask me another time."

The whole thing about Knetz and wonho's "scandalous" past reminded me of something. As a PSA to those people who are so insistent and pushy that idols aren't allowed to have sex/date/be anything but straight: Fuck all of you. I feel like a failure. I feel like I’ve invested all this time and money into an education, only to screw up so badly; I run the risk of being expelled, or at the very least winding up on academic probation. The normal part of my brain tells me that they don’t assess whether not you’re on academic probation until the end of the semester, but I don’t feel like things are going to look good by then. It’s giving me a knot in my stomach that just won’t go away. Actually, scratch that. I feel like my stomach acid hardened into something like a giant kidney stone, but the size of my stomach.

Why? Well, the Friday of the reading week, I got the grade on my capacitors lab back. I didn’t do well on it at all. In fact, I failed it. I got a 2%.

Here's what we had to do: we had to measure the permittivity of a vacuum by making a capacitor and spacing the plates closer together. In case you don’t know, the permittivity of a vacuum arises from the ratio of change in an electric charge to the change in its potential encountered as you form an electric field in a vacuum. We measure permittivity in picofarads per metre, and we accept a value of 8.85 picofarads per metre for the permittivity of a vacuum.

I don’t believe it. I got a 2% on a lab writeup. I usually bring home grades in the 70s to high 80s. If things really had a rough patch, the worst thing I usually bring home is a 60. But this? 2%? Unthinkable! Two percent is for milk, not labs!

Good, my friend Mark is here. “How’d you do on the lab?” he asks me.

“Well,” I began, “I thought I did well, but I wound up getting 2%.”

Mark laughed. “You did better than me.” he said, “I'd, uh…rather not say how I did”

I snickered to myself. Wow, I thought, I guess my mom was right. If I screwed up badly, everyone else did do worse.

"What sucks is that things seemed to be going great." I continued, "the equipment didn’t act weird on us, the computer didn’t crash, and everyone knew what we were supposed to do." It shouldn’t have been so bloody frustrating. It shouldn't have made me cry after writing up the discussion. "Everything basically went to hell after I started going over the data."

"What was the problem?" Mark asked me.

"When I made the graph to show the relationship between capacitance and distance, stuff went wrong." Saying "stuff went wrong" was an understatement, The data didn’t follow the relationship outlined in the equation. The capacitance is inversely proportional to the distance between the plates, so the curve should look like a hook. It didn’t.

It got worse after I converted the data so that it followed a Y=mX+b relationship. Since the capacitance increases as distance decreases, Y represents the capacitance and X represents the inverse of the distance. The slope of the line contains the surface area of the capacitor plates times the permittivity of the air. The dielectric constant of the air is close enough to 1 that the permittivity of air is about the same as the vacuum. Funny how that works, isn’t it?

Anway, that’s not the frustrating part. I get the theory. The frustrating part is this: after getting the slope and dividing out the surface area of the capacitor plates, the answer I got was not that magic number of 8.85 picofarads per metre. It was 6.59 picofarads per metre. Not even close to the real value. Not even close.

I’m trying to be patient with this. Really, I am. But I have no idea what the hell happened with this lab. I understand that electromagnetics labs get screwed up a lot because of all the interference from the computers and other electronics in the lab. But this was really bad. It was so bad that I couldn’t tell whether it was from interference or whether I screwed something up while doing the experiment.

As I read about the sources of error for this kind of experiment, I’m starting to feel better about it. It doesn’t look like I’m the only one who had a problem with it. Some other guy designed a different experiment to measure the permittivity of a vacuum. That experiment; however, used Coulomb’s law instead of a capacitor. He ended up with a value of 12 picofarads per metre. I feel kind of relieved knowing that it’s not just me. The permittivity of free space is hard to measure

Class let in. We sat down. Jorielle, our TA, said to us “OK guys, hands up if you’ve heard of the CS Help Center shutting down”

My hand went up quickly. I never took any proper CS courses, but I’ve gone down there once or twice for some general coding/debugging help. I’m not at all surprised that the university shut it down. The CS department only runs Help Center the weeks we have an assignment due, and even then, they were only in the office from 2-5 in the afternoon.

Only about four or so TA's worked there at it given time, so that meant people would wait in lines that stretched out the door. They also institute a five minute time limit for each student. That means that out of about 150 or so people there, only 40 to 75 of them would get help.

On top of that, the TA's would only help the boys. They totally ignored everyone else on the sign up sheet for help. As a result, I'd always try to do as much of the assignment on my own.

“I know a fair amount of you encountered many frustrating bugs during the coding portion of the assignment, and felt like it got to be too much,” she continued, “so you went to the CS Help Center, only to find it closed.”

By this point, about half the class pricked up their ears. They leaned further forward in their seats. “The university closed the CS Help Center because they had to fire all the TA's.”

A handful of people gasped. The rest of us widened our eyes. Serves them right, I figured.

Then, Jorielle dropped a bomb. “As for those of you who asked me when CS Help Center would reopen, it won’t.” she said, “It won’t come back on line until next semester”

My classmates sat there in shock. I heard them whisper “What?”, “Are you kidding me?’, and “This is horseshit!”

“Now,” Jorielle said, clapping for emphasis, “hands up if you got your code working all on your own?”

Once again, my hand went up. Only three other people raised their hands.

“Chang, Amir, Lucy, and Eddie; congratulations.” Jorielle said with a smile, “the four of you automatically get 100% on the lab.”

We have been insuring our Audi with the Co-op, who I've generally found to be reasonable. However, now we have a problem. A couple of months ago we bought a van with the intention of replacing the Audi with the van. But the van needed some work doing on it, so we took out a second insurance on the van with the Co-op, so we could still drive the Audi. At the time, I was disappointed to be told that we could not have a No Claims Bonus on the van, as they said it could only be applied to one policy at a time. But they gave the clear impression that when we cancel the Audi insurance, we could then transfer the NCB to the van. The Audi has now broken down, so we want to cancel its insurance. However, yesterday when I called them, they now said they cannot transfer the NCB to the van as it would be being transferred 'mid-season' to a different car policy. They said they could only have applied it to the van if we had changed the original Audi's policy to cover the van, instead of taking out a different insurance policy for the van. This seems ridiculous. Surely, we are entitled to our NCB?! Why should it matter that it is mid-season or not? I explained that if I cancelled our insurances with them and went to another company, I would be given a NCB on the van so why won't they give it to me. They agreed! I really don't want to change, as I don't trust other companies and the Co-op seem more ethical than others. But this seems so stupid. To get round this silly rule without changing company, I'm thinking of cancelling the van insurance and changing the Audi insurance to the van, ie. do what they said I should have done in the beginning. I was told that since I am registered under my parents insurance, the other party can see that they have a lot of assets they can sue for from my parents. I've done research, and I know Florida is a no-fault state, meaning drivers cannot sue each other unless serious injury occurred, such as loss of life, limb, permanent injury, etc. In both accidents, I did not get ticketed, and I believe no police report was written, only exchanges of information.(Police were called, however. So I'm looking for some advice on a good, but cheap, car (Either New or Used, if used I would like to know the general life expectancy from new in order to work out how long it will resonantly last) that will last me for at least 4 years and get me through my first Degree, I also would like it to have a fairly low insurance for a beginner driver as I am a college student, currently, and plan on doing my Masters (Starting next year) then my PHD, so I won't have a massive pot of funds.
