iva was born to a blacksmiths' daughter in BATERILLA, and a marine that had been visiting there with his crew. she had never met her father as he quickly departed before her mother even knew she was pregnant. her mother died during childbirth, leaving iva to her grandfather — WILLOW LLOYD — whom took up raising her himself.

he was no master blacksmith, and was one of three on the island, but he was still skilled and that mastery was quickly passed onto iva as she watched every movement he made, and replicated every technique with precision. she was relatively happy as a child, and learned from her grandfather as she grew up, until he died when she was 20.

upon his death, she was left a relic of her family that her grandfather had only addressed in passing : TENKO NO TAMASHII , a curved blade, resembling a SHINTO TACHI. its' wooden scabbard was decorated with prayer beads, wrapped tightly around it. iva was left with a note, telling her to never unleash this cursed blade, to which their family was tasked in protecting.

with no more things tying her to this quaint little island, she left it aboard a pirate ship she stowed away on. unfortunately, she would be caught only a day into the voyage, and confronted by the captain of this crew — THE OWL PIRATES' MUKUROU. it took only a single threat from him, and a lunge towards her for her to wield that cursed blade of hers.

she isn't really sure what happened next, only that she was awoken in a bed, bandages covering much of her torso and the right side of her face. come to find out, that blade of hers was cursed by the soul of a fox god that was once defeated by an ancestor of hers', and in order for her to wield such a sword, she had to give up something of hers — HER RIGHT EYE. the whole ship was found split in half, all of the crew dead, and she among the wreckage. the only reason she was saved was by a marine ship that witnessed the situation.

iva was questioned heavily by the vice - admiral aboard that ship, and her sword confiscated. with several failed attempts at finding her companion under her belt, she had to relent. she was given the option of being turned in as a pirate or join the marines under the command of that admiral. well ... she had no other place to go, and she didn't want to be taken in!

she joined the marines and her sword was given back to her.

she never really worked hard at her job, proving herself to be a lazy marine, though she was a skilled pirate hunter when she was given a head to find. she easily took the rank of commander, and came to work under one of the worst ( in her opinion ) bosses ever. but she had a place to sleep, and a purpose to live, so she was somewhat content.
