That resonates with a lot of transmasculine experiences, where one parent, here, a mother, who wants a second chance at a more successful life, living through her kin, is "stuck in the past" and in their denial-induced idea of what their child should be due to assignated gender at birth, ignoring their (in hiromi shiota's case) son's coming out and self-advocacy of being a guy.
